It was one of those days, it was clearly the end of winter, but it wasn't quite warm enough to be considered spring or summer. On your way to Greenhouse Three you stomp and slush through muddy puddles where the grass has grown thin and the dirt is exposed. The sky overhead is cloudy but the chances of rain are slim. No.. what the sky does hold is hope for the warmer days to come.
Inside Greenhouse Three you find that the Busy Bee had been rather successful. Everything was neat and orderly, even if there were no plants in here as yet. So why would Bentley be holding a lesson in an empty Greenhouse? Hhhmmm I wonder.
The focus of the Greenhouse is on the long raised flowerbed that runs down the middle of the space. Empty plant hangers swing slightly from the ceiling as a chilly breeze drifts through.
Professor Bentley isn't here yet, but she won't be long.
OOC: The lesson has officially started, do NOT announce your late arrival unless you want to lose points. Just pretend as if you were there all along. If you haven't done so already then please read through the Herbology Rules and Expectations and the SS Site Rules. All SS Board Rules apply. IC rule breaking will result in IC punishment, OOC rule breaking will result in OOC punishment. Please behave appropriately and most importantly... have fun. If you have any questions don't hesitate to send me a PM.

She lowered her hand, still trying to tell the different shades of pink apart.
"Very good Elise," nodded Seren.

Oooooooooooh....preeeeeeeeeetty...
Kurumi found herself distracted by the orange flower to really hear what was being asked, but she did manage to catch the slight inflection that meant a question had been asked. What was being asked again? Something about dropping them...and...blooming...
Kurumi had fallen victim to the plant's defense mechanism. Puffapods were good...too good...
"I imagine that the reaction of pod to blossom has something to do with the contents of the seed being exposed to the air," she said after a few minutes as her brain put the pieces of the puzzle together. "The seed's shell has to break in order for the blossoms to form."
"Yes! Indeed the chemical reaction which occurs when the inside of the seed is exposed to oxygen which then results in the plant blooming. It's a defense mechanism of the seed, so this way it blooms rather than simple allowing itself to be damaged by the impact." Magical stuff really. Clever little babiesplants.

Anyway, back to the lesson. He watched the seed land, and the flower burst out. It was quite exciting, though wasn't quite sure why people would call it 'explosive'. It didn't quite have the big BANG one might quite like with an explosion. Regardless, he had some theories as to why it happened.
"Is it some sort of flower dispersal tactic?" Spike mused, his lips pursing thoughtfully. "If the pods fell and didn't open, then the pods would be liable to being eaten. And that'd be no use, as the seeds would sprout rapidly inside said predator as soon as the pod opened or just be digested. The equivalent of us eating runner beans... And then it couldn't survive and reproduce - the main aim of any organism."
He tapped his fingers on the table, momentarily distracted by the thought of having a flowering plant in his stomach and flowers trying to appear from his mouth. "By breaking open as they hit the ground and sprouting, the plants have the best chance of survival. Being in close proximity to the parent plant isn't a problem...releasing the seeds at the right time is. Unlike say fruit seeds, which need more light and nutrients and therefore wish to be dispersed further afield by being carried by birds and the like."
Maybe?
Spike's answer rather surprised her. The boy had marvellously outlandish theories that manages to bring a smile to her face. "Nice ideas Spike," she said encouragingly. "You're definitely right about it being a defensive mechanism, the seed will bloom when the shell is cracked so that way it protects the plant and certainly increases its chance for survival. If it were an ordinary seed, it would simply be danaged by the impact."

She looked at Professor Bentley for a while before her brain had actually absorbed the question. Blame it on the Puffapod. "Professor, I agree with Lilian and Elise, it is somewhat a sort of the plant's defense mechanism, or the seed in particular. For as you have mentioned earlier that the seed's rim was actually fragile, it seems that the blossoming of plant from inside it is a reaction to the seed's collision with the ground." Or something like that.
"Very good, it is a defensive mechanism, but the impact isn't the only thing which is responsible for its rapid growth. The chemical reaction which occurs when the inside of the seed comes into contact with oxygen is what allows it to bloom."

Mystifying moment.
Stretching her hands to answer Professor Bentley's question, Erin spoke, "It is fragile as you have mentioned earlier Professor, that's why when you dropped the seed into the ground, it definitely cracked but it cracked in a way that it revealed a very beautiful flower in orange," thinking of her next sentence, she paused for while then continued. "Puffapods bloom when dropped probably because of its impact to the ground and sort of the chemical reaction inside the pod, I guess? The air has an oxygen, most probably it reacts with that or any other elements in the air."
Seren nodded. Yes! "Absolutely this chemical reaction is actually a defensive mechanisn, so rather than the seed being spoiled on impact, it blooms giving the plant a greater chance of survival."

"This could also play with the plants organisms and when it's dropped it and the ridge is broken it creates a chemical reaction in which it responds to either the air or the particles in the air causing it to bloom instantaneously." He approaching this in a scientific way and with what kind of sounded logical, but he wasn't sure it he was all that correct. He didn't know the puffapod's anatomy or how its organism worked, after all.

She'd never actually seen an orange one, and at least this color was better than that awful pink.
She sat up straight again when a question was asked. "Maybe it's just the impact of the fall," she said, raising her hand. "Or it could be that the seed is made of some kind of substance that explodes on impact, so when you drop the seed and it cracks open, it triggers that substance. So what you end up with is an exploded seed that blooms once its opened." Made sense to her...
Naw, it was a shame Sierra's face didn't light up like the rest of them. Perhaps the young snake was accustomed to seeing the process?.. Oh poop! "You're on the right track Sierra. Did she look like a potions Professor? "Perhaps, though you'd probably want to discuss that with Professor Lafay. There is still much that we don't know about the Puffapod, but the primary function is simply for decoration."
Seren tilted her head in yes-no fashion. "Mmm sort of. See its more of a defensive mechanism triggered by the impact which cracks the seed, allowing the inside of it to have a chemical reaction with the oxygen it is exposed to.. which then results in the plant blossoming."

How did that happen? She had no idea. Everyone's answers were so different that she could not be sure if any of them were right. So she rose her hand and gave her own interpretation, "Well ma'am, I could be wrong so stop me if I am, perhaps it has something to do with velocity. I mean that seed drops at a very fast velocity and because it is moving so quickly the only way to break the fall in a healthy manner is to come to a complete stop, neuton's laws. So what if, and I may be wrong, the velocity of plant is so great that the plant inside needs to burst out or it would destroy itself and its purpose."
Oohhh now this was an interesting answer. Seren smiled and tilted her head in interest. "Mmm sort of, velocity certainly plays an important role in the process, but unfortunately its not the reason why the seed explodes. The impact of the seed on the ground when dropped from a suitable height will result in the seed cracking. This then results in a chemical reaction with the oxygen it's exposed to, and then the plant blooms. Though to go along with your train of thought, it is a defensive mechanism designed to give the plant a greater chance of survival."

Quite the opposite, he was listening to everyone's words carefully especially to the professor's. He was just...unable to focus his attention on a single spot for some reason.
And it was only when the woman started to show the stuff on the seed that the Gryffindor was able to stop and watch. Maybe he was not the best with plants but he knew he needed the information for his NEWTs and maybe even for life if he was going to carry on his life as a wizard after graduation. So, he eyed the orange seed carefully and...
...his eyes widened considerably when it was turned into a large orange flower in a few seconds after hitting the surface. ''Wow.'' Now that was something interesting and VERY useful.
''Professor...'' he stood up still eyeing the flower a bit before looking back at the woman. ''...i don't think i know what makes the seed bloom so quickly. Some of the things my classmates said sounded reasonable. I...have questions instead. I wonder if those seeds were bewitched to react like that...'' he looked at the flower again then back at the Herbology professor ''...if they are then...cannot it be done to the other kind of seeds. It'd have been very useful in farms. We could get lots of crops so easily and quickly.''
It was very unlikely, in his opinion, that it could work that way yet he still wanted to ask.
And one more thing.
''And, professor, does it react only when it hits to a surface? What if i force it open with my hands?''
Ahh and so the Lion speaks! Brilliant.
Seren smiled as Josh stood to ask his questions. Questions.. they were brilliant things. She nodded considering them. "No unofrtunately it's a natural property of the plant, so they're not bewitched. Though there are spells and potions we can use in order to achieve the same results... though the plants life expectancy is drastically shortened as a result of it." Which was a shame.. but having said that, the natural way of planting was much better, more fun, and definitely more rewarding.
"Ahhh good question Josh, I'm glad you asked! The impact is necessary for the process to occur, however it is the exposure to oxygen which results in the chemical reaction within the seed, thus making it bloom. You... could... attempt to crack the shell with your own hands, but I do not reccomend this. The seeds perimeter is fragile, but it is still quite tough, it requires a certain amount of force to crack it... and failed attempts will only damage the seed."
Yes... so nobody was to attempt to simply smash it with a hammer or their wand... NOBODY!
Right... she should recap, just so nobody missed anything. "So while the force of the impact is vital in cracking the seeds shell, it is the chemical reaction the inside of the seed has with the oxygen in the air which results in its ability to bloom. This is a defensive mechanism adopted by the seed, giving it a greater chance of survival. Without this mechanism, the seed would be damaged and spoiled by the impact."
"I do hope you've listened to your peers responses as well, they raised some particularly important points which I'm not going to repeat." She glanced at Josh briefly before scanning the rest of the class.
"Now, we know that the impact is an important part of the process, can anybody tell me what height the seed should be dropped from in order for it to crack on impact effectively?"
Err... The height. Right. This should be easy. They had dozens of puffapods at their garden back at the mansion. Aiden put up her hand to answer. "Five feet," she answered briefly.

Zhenya had a think about it, biting her tongue...
"Um, Professor I think maybe head height? So... for the average person, 5.5 feet or so?" she guessed.

Kennedy scribbled down what Professor Bentley said into his notebook and listened to the next question. He slowly raise his hand and said, "It should be at approximately five feet." Right?
He was also curious about something else. "Professor Bentley, does the amount of force a puffapod seed is dropped matter?" Like, what if he threw it really hard at two feet away from the ground, would that matter?

Alex looked down to the floor. If he dropped it from the top of his head it would probably hurt the seed. But if he dropped it from the bottom his chin...that seemed about the right height. "Erm, 5 feet...ish?" he guessed, raising his hand as he used his other one to try and estimate where the seed would be actually dropped from.
Couldn't they just like...use a spell to break it or something?

Kurumi was still kind of distracted by the pretty orange flowers that Professor Bentley had made appear after dropping the puffapod seed. They reminded her of fireworks, something Kurumi loved and looked forward to every summer when she went back home to Japan. Every weekend there was a fireworks festival held somewhere, and it gave her an excuse to leave her home and go off on day trips with her brothers, wearing traditional yukata, and just enjoying themselves without their mother's watchful eye. Even Jonathan would be able to see the displays this summer when he came to visit, which made her look forward to the summer even more.
Could they start playing with puffapods now too? Please?
Kurumi snapped back into the present when she heard her classmates offering up answers to, erm, whatever it was that Professor Bentley had asked. Maybe Jonathan needed to poke her to stop day dreaming. Merlin, if SHE was day dreaming he was probably asleep. She nudged him with her elbow again just to be safe, pretending that she had simply raised her hand at slight angle.
But...wait a second. If the height was over five feet...then this little Gryffindor had a problem seeing as she was just barely 5 foot one now. Height was really just all about reaching a maximum velocity anyway, right? Or was she going to have to literally jump when she wanted to cause the chemical reaction? Merlin this was going to be awkward. Good thing Jonathan was tall.
Still, Professor Bentley had dropped her puffapod seed from not too high and hadn't really lifted her arms much, so Kurumi ventured her own guess. "Judging from your demonstration, I would guess somewhere around five feet," Kurumi answered despite her hand being up in the air for quite some time. "But...what if you are unable to, for whatever reason, drop it from that height? Could you still cause the seed to burst if you applied enough speed in your drop? It's more about the force of the impact than the height, right?" Like, if you dropped it from the top of the Owlery but gave the puffapod seed a little makeshift parachute nothing would happen sort of thing?

Elise frowned. How high? Judging from Professor Bentley's height, she'd say somewhere around 5 feet. Dropped from head level. Raising her hand, she answered.
"Somewhere around 5 feet, Professor," she chirped, before she realized that she wasn't 5 feet tall. "Would it still be alright to drop it from a slightly lower height?"
The petite first year lowered her hand sheepishly and gave up on the pink. Now to tell between the oranges.

Alyssa thought for awhile, raised her hand and answered."Professor, I am guessing that the most effective height would be about 5 feet. But could the height from which the seed is dropped be just one factor to consider? Should we also consider how much force was used to drop the seed plus the angle at which the seed was dropped from? For example if the seed was dropped from maybe four feet but the force at which it was thrown was super, super fast and strong, and the angle of impact was such that it hit at the most fragile part of the seed, could that also cause the seed to crack on impact?"Alyssa asked hoping that she was making sense because for some weird reason the beautiful colors of the seeds were so mesmerizing that she was having a tough time concentrating.

Sounded good. Tori would totes get to stand on table or chair. WOOO!

"Yes indeed its a defensive mechanism which results from a chemical reaction when the inside of the seed is exposed to oxygen." Seren gave Harvey an encouraging smile. His other idea was interesting, even if it wasn't really correct.
Seren was a little shocked, but still highly amused by the Gryffindors answer. "Umm... sort of... though I wouldn't appreciate anybody dropping me in my head in order to wake me up." No... a glass of water would suffice-- at most!
OOC: Will be moving on in approximately 12 hours.
William raised his hand." I think the puffapod should be dropped about three to five feet from the ground" William told the professor.

Right now, Jonathan wasn't day dreaming but he has to admit that he was staring blankly into space while Professor Bentley was explaining stuffs about the puffapods. But as always, Jonathan is very much a good listener. So he still heard of everything.

Even the question... Jonathan thought of it. He has read of it but he simply must have skimmed it when he read. Uhmmm... Then suddenly Kurumi nudged him on the shoulder. He looked at her and whispered "what?" did something happen while he was spacing out and maybe thinking at the same time? He looked around. Everyone seemed to be okay and so is Professor Bentley.
Finally, he remembered. Yeah, how could he have forgotten "5 feet, i suppose" is it?

Hmm. How high were they supposed to drop it from? Indiana wasn't too sure, although she figured that it was probably going to be a bit higher than what she was right now. Because what was the point of dropping it from a height if it wasn't going to be a big one. Hmm. Indy looked down into her text book. That would give her the answer. Ooh. She looked up, raising her hand. "I think it's between 3 - 5 feet..."

There was so much she didn't know about Puffapods, it seemed. She had, however, seen the Professor drop the seed a moment ago. She held up a hand to the height it had been dropped from... "Erm... about head height..?" she asked, still with her hand measuring the height that the seed was dropped from.

Oh? So the chemical reaction between the oxygen and the inside of the seed counts too? She hadn't thought of that one. "I see." She muttered as she nodded.
Beatrice lend her ears to her classmates as they gave their answers.. Most of the class had said that an approximately 5 feet height is needed for the Puffapod seeds to bloom. But, if the fragility and the reaction of the seed to the air was important, then does it really matter from what height the seeds would need to be coming from in order to bloom? She raised her hand, giving it a try. "Professor, I believe that the recommended height from where a seed should be dropped from would be around three to five inches." That was a theory which she could not even explain. "But Professor, does it really matter? I mean, no matter from what height the seed is dropped from, it would just crack if it would be exposed to air and would have a great impact as it touches the ground, right?" Okay. So, maybe not. She did not know, that's why she was asking.
What height would they need to drop the seed from for insta-flower? She wasn't exactly sure to be honest. It was kind of one of those random facts that only Kurumi would know. But Selina could at least make a guess. Selina was five feet tall. Bentley was taller than her but she dropped it from about shoulder with on Bentley's body. She did not hold it over her head. So maybe about five feet? Ma'am, maybe around five feet? Perhaps a little taller."

Tiffany remembered that her brother had told her this. She had also read some book and research based on puffapods too. The height...
She raised her hand,"Professor, I guess it's about 5 feets tall, that's about the height of a person. I have read this from some books before."Smiling, she sat down and listened.
"Judging from your demonstration earlier, it's like about about my height, almost. Probably about 5 feet or so?"
That was totally a wild guess. Erin hoped her explanations would make sense in a way. Maybe if it's 5 or so, above, it'lll be too high and create a great damage towards the fragile part of the puffapod and too low for 5 feet or below. There were standards? Really?

"Very good."
Seren smiled briefly. "Well a drop is a drop unless you put extra force into it which would be more of a throw. But yes certainly, you don't want to over do it, but you don't want to under do it either. It also depends on the type of surface you're dropping it on."

"Yes, five feet is correct."
Seren considered the Gryffindors question. "Well certainly there are always other options. If you are unable to reach the height physically you could always stand on a chair, or use the levitation charm to reach the height, however if you restricted in space then you could certainly attempt to adjust the force of the drop... or in that case it would be more or a throw. But I do not reccomend this because it will likely damage the seed if not done correctly."

"Somewhere around 5 feet, Professor," she chirped, before she realized that she wasn't 5 feet tall. "Would it still be alright to drop it from a slightly lower height?"
The petite first year lowered her hand sheepishly and gave up on the pink. Now to tell between the oranges.

Hhmm.. "Like I've told the others you could attempt it by adjusting the force t which the seed is dropped or thrown, but I wouldn't reccomend it as the seed would likely be damaged by the impact."

"All very good ideas, but you need to consider that with added force comes added risk. When we pruposefully add force angles deviate, and the risk of damaging the seed and not simply cracking the rim is increased." But if you wanted to try and ruin a perfectly good puffapod seed so be it... just not in HER greenhouse.

The same if you drop it from too high up, the force might be greater but if it doesn't fall correctly then the seed will also be damaged. Five feet allows us to drop it with more control but with enough down force to crack the fragile perimeter."

"Yes! thats correct."
Right... well that went reasonably well. Most of the students seemed to know a thing or two about puffapods. Textbooks were marvellous things. "Yes! So five feet is the most efficient height to drop a puffapod. Now you can achieve the same results from a greater or lower height... but the efficiency decreases, and this could result in a damaged seed simply from the impact not being hard enough to crack the perimeter or simply because the force was too great but the angle wasn't and so the body of the seed gets damaged but it doesn't crack and therefore the puffapod does not bloom."
Seren stared at the students. It looked as though a number of them were about to leap out of their chairs and claim a seed. Mmm it was probably time to distribute them. But how? Should she go around and hand them out? let them select their own? Or simply place the box in the centre of the greenhouse and let them loose on the seeds. Perhaps a little pushing and shoving would be involved?... Because Seren certainly knew that when she was a student if there was a particular colour she wanted, then she would get it... no if's or but's about it.
Hhhmm.. yes, the students could fend for themselves. "Alright everyone, come up and grab yourself a puffapod seed of your choice. DO NOT push and shove... too much.... and DO NOT under any circumstances burst your seed yet!"
She stood back from the box, letting it sit on the workspace at the front of the raised flower bed.
OOC: RP collecting your seed, you may pick either pink, purple or orange... and then return to your workstation (your position beside the long raised flower bed) The lesson will continue when I wake up XD
Oh! So, they start now? Yay! Fantastic Herbology class. And they get to shove each other for the love of the colors they wanted.
Half-running, she didn't want others to notice her picking the pink puffapod. She knew it'll be quite in demand to the girly girls like her. Making her way towards the box of different colored puffapods, Erin almost tripped upon the pushing of other students. Watch out! She wanted to stick her tongue to that girl. Hmph!
"You're mine, Pinky!" she said raising it head high. After grabbing her seed, she moved towards her position at the side of the raised flowerbed.
Janice observed the seeds before collecting them. The pink gave her an inner flinch and the orange was just too bright. So she went up front and took the purple puffapod seed, hoping that it would grew into a violet-coloured-flower plant.
Egg kept on moving in her pockets. Janice considered of using the freezing charm on it. But Egg might got damaged, so she tried to ignore it.

"Err--yeah. I actually meant five feet Professor." She said, slowly and as low as she could. That was just a bit embarrassing ain't it? Oh well, the first year's brain doesn't seem to be working extra careful at the moment. As she listened to the Professor's answer to her follow up question, she kept her head bowed. She was absorbing all the facts that Professor Bentley was saying, but she was also thinking about that humiliating answer she had just given a while ago.
It's time to pick up? Alright then. With her still bowed and her eyes directed on her shoes, Beatrice walked to the workspace where the box was placed. So, I'm going to pick the purple one. Purple things are just so pretty. She thought as she took steps.
The students had already started piling up to also claim their seeds. Hopefully, there won't be a stampede or anything. When she got that chance to pick hers, she peeked inside the box and got herself a purple one. And with one quick move, she pivoted back to her own workstation and waited for further instructions.

Five...good to know. Kurumi could handle five feet, although Professor Bentley had just brought up a whole bunch of other ways to accomplish it even if some of them were vertically challenged. Good to know, very good to know. And good to know that throwing the seed probably wasn't a good idea. Something told Kurumi that attempting to do so would cause a student whiplash because they would find themselves in detention so fast.

Harvey listened intently as the professor explained about the seeds and the height and angle they should be dropped from to avoid being damaged. Soon the professor said that they could collect a seed from the box, and soon as she gave the go ahead he rushed up to the box and saw some purple ones. He quickly grabbed one of them before they were all gone. He then went back to his station, clasping the seed in his hand carefully so that it wouldnt get damaged on the way back to his station.
Once he was there, he carefully opened his hand and looked it over to make sure that it wasnt damaged. It wasnt, well it looked that way. He then laid the seed in the palm of his right hand and just let the seed lay there as he watched his classmates get theres, he would occasionally look to his palm just to make the seed was still there. It was!

Hhhmm.. yes, the students could fend for themselves.
Elise grinned. Stand on a chair, maybe. That'd work. She sighed. Why was she cursed with shortness?!
When Professor Bentley announced that they could pick their seeds, she beamed. Nearly jumping off her seat, she ran walked very fast to the cardboard box.
Scanning the colors she'd been studying earlier, she settled on a nicely sized purple one. A very adorable purple. Cause puffapods were cute.
Then, she walked back to her workstation, sitting herself down and examining the puffapod. So purple!
Kennedy nodded at professor Bentley. So, force, height and surface all mattered when dropping a puffapod seed. Interesting. He listened to explanation of things until she said that they would be choosing their own pods.
Cool, man.
He stood and and peered over the first people that got there. He didn't want a pink one; too girly. He didn't want a purple one either. So that left him with one other choice. He went up to the box and retrieved an orange puffapod seed.
