"Very good."

Seren smiled briefly. "Well a drop is a drop unless you put extra force into it which would be more of a throw. But yes certainly, you don't want to over do it, but you don't want to under do it either. It also depends on the type of surface you're dropping it on."

Couldn't they just like...use a spell to break it or something?
"Very good!"

They reminded her of fireworks, something Kurumi loved and looked forward to every summer when she went back home to Japan. Every weekend there was a fireworks festival held somewhere, and it gave her an excuse to leave her home and go off on day trips with her brothers, wearing traditional yukata, and just enjoying themselves without their mother's watchful eye. Even Jonathan would be able to see the displays this summer when he came to visit, which made her look forward to the summer even more.

Could they start playing with puffapods now too? Please?

Kurumi snapped back into the present when she heard her classmates offering up answers to, erm, whatever it was that Professor Bentley had asked. Maybe Jonathan needed to poke her to stop day dreaming. Merlin, if SHE was day dreaming he was probably asleep. She nudged him with her elbow again just to be safe, pretending that she had simply raised her hand at slight angle.

But...wait a second. If the height was over five feet...then this little Gryffindor had a problem seeing as she was just barely 5 foot one now. Height was really just all about reaching a maximum velocity anyway, right? Or was she going to have to literally jump when she wanted to cause the chemical reaction? Merlin this was going to be awkward. Good thing Jonathan was tall.

Still, Professor Bentley had dropped her puffapod seed from not too high and hadn't really lifted her arms much, so Kurumi ventured her own guess. "Judging from your demonstration, I would guess somewhere around five feet," Kurumi answered despite her hand being up in the air for quite some time. "But...what if you are unable to, for whatever reason, drop it from that height? Could you still cause the seed to burst if you applied enough speed in your drop? It's more about the force of the impact than the height, right?" Like, if you dropped it from the top of the Owlery but gave the puffapod seed a little makeshift parachute nothing would happen sort of thing?
"Yes, five feet is correct."

Seren considered the Gryffindors question. "Well certainly there are always other options. If you are unable to reach the height physically you could always stand on a chair, or use the levitation charm to reach the height, however if you restricted in space then you could certainly attempt to adjust the force of the drop... or in that case it would be more or a throw. But I do not reccomend this because it will likely damage the seed if not done correctly."

Elise frowned. How high? Judging from Professor Bentley's height, she'd say somewhere around 5 feet. Dropped from head level. Raising her hand, she answered.

"Somewhere around 5 feet, Professor," she chirped, before she realized that she wasn't 5 feet tall. "Would it still be alright to drop it from a slightly lower height?"

The petite first year lowered her hand sheepishly and gave up on the pink. Now to tell between the oranges.

Could they start dropping puffapods now?! PLEASE?!
"Yes very good!"

Hhmm.. "Like I've told the others you could attempt it by adjusting the force t which the seed is dropped or thrown, but I wouldn't reccomend it as the seed would likely be damaged by the impact."

But could the height from which the seed is dropped be just one factor to consider? Should we also consider how much force was used to drop the seed plus the angle at which the seed was dropped from? For example if the seed was dropped from maybe four feet but the force at which it was thrown was super, super fast and strong, and the angle of impact was such that it hit at the most fragile part of the seed, could that also cause the seed to crack on impact?"Alyssa asked hoping that she was making sense because for some weird reason the beautiful colors of the seeds were so mesmerizing that she was having a tough time concentrating.
"All very good ideas, but you need to consider that with added force comes added risk. When we pruposefully add force angles deviate, and the risk of damaging the seed and not simply cracking the rim is increased." But if you wanted to try and ruin a perfectly good puffapod seed so be it... just not in HER greenhouse.

Sounded good. Tori would totes get to stand on table or chair. WOOO!
"Yes! very good, five feet is usually best."

Even the question... Jonathan thought of it. He has read of it but he simply must have skimmed it when he read. Uhmmm... Then suddenly Kurumi nudged him on the shoulder. He looked at her and whispered "what?" did something happen while he was spacing out and maybe thinking at the same time? He looked around. Everyone seemed to be okay and so is Professor Bentley.

Finally, he remembered. Yeah, how could he have forgotten "5 feet, i suppose" is it?

"Yes! Very good Jonathan."

She looked up, raising her hand. "I think it's between 3 - 5 feet..."
Seren offered Indiana a smile. The girl had been rather quiet this lesson.. perhaps the puffapods were just overwhelmingly exciting. She could hardly blame the girl.
"Five feet dear," she said nodding. "Three would be too little."

Seren smiled at the Slytherin.
"Well that would depend on whose head height you were dropping it from," she mused.
"Five feet is best."

Beatrice lend her ears to her classmates as they gave their answers.. Most of the class had said that an approximately 5 feet height is needed for the Puffapod seeds to bloom. But, if the fragility and the reaction of the seed to the air was important, then does it really matter from what height the seeds would need to be coming from in order to bloom? She raised her hand, giving it a try. "Professor, I believe that the recommended height from where a seed should be dropped from would be around three to five inches." That was a theory which she could not even explain. "But Professor, does it really matter? I mean, no matter from what height the seed is dropped from, it would just crack if it would be exposed to air and would have a great impact as it touches the ground, right?" Okay. So, maybe not. She did not know, that's why she was asking.
Inches? Oh Merlin no.
"I think you mean five feet dear."

"... It does matter, because if you drop it from a lower height it may not have the required impact and it may not hit the rim of the pod which could potentially result in a dmaged seed. The same if you drop it from too high up, the force might be greater but if it doesn't fall correctly then the seed will also be damaged. Five feet allows us to drop it with more control but with enough down force to crack the fragile perimeter."

So maybe about five feet? Ma'am, maybe around five feet? Perhaps a little taller."
Seren nodded, smiling at the young Gryffindor.
"Yes, very good.. about five feet is best. If you go higher than that then the efficiency decreases."

That was totally a wild guess. Erin hoped her explanations would make sense in a way. Maybe if it's 5 or so, above, it'lll be too high and create a great damage towards the fragile part of the puffapod and too low for 5 feet or below. There were standards? Really?

"Yes! thats correct."

Right... well that went reasonably well. Most of the students seemed to know a thing or two about puffapods. Textbooks were marvellous things.
"Yes! So five feet is the most efficient height to drop a puffapod. Now you can achieve the same results from a greater or lower height... but the efficiency decreases, and this could result in a damaged seed simply from the impact not being hard enough to crack the perimeter or simply because the force was too great but the angle wasn't and so the body of the seed gets damaged but it doesn't crack and therefore the puffapod does not bloom."

Seren stared at the students. It looked as though a number of them were about to leap out of their chairs and claim a seed. Mmm it was probably time to distribute them. But how? Should she go around and hand them out? let them select their own? Or simply place the box in the centre of the greenhouse and let them loose on the seeds. Perhaps a little pushing and shoving would be involved?... Because Seren certainly knew that when she was a student if there was a particular colour she wanted, then she would get it... no if's or but's about it.

Hhhmm.. yes, the students could fend for themselves.
"Alright everyone, come up and grab yourself a puffapod seed of your choice. DO NOT push and shove... too much.... and DO NOT under any circumstances burst your seed yet!"
She stood back from the box, letting it sit on the workspace at the front of the raised flower bed.

OOC: RP collecting your seed, you may pick either pink, purple or orange... and then return to your workstation (your position beside the long raised flower bed) The lesson will continue when I wake up XD
