Wow... but the question is when did he start writing this story about harry's son. And not only that, But how many of the ff writers who tried to go beyond into harry's adult hood, write that his first son was named james... come on now.... is he looking to publish this?! (not counting the website...)

Um, if the story is being written and posted for free, where's the point in sueing? Is this not just the same as any other fanfiction? Sure, there's more media with music and whatnot, but it's not like he's making money out of this.

I agree. This whole situation worries me though. We've slowly been seeing action being taken against fan fiction writers across the net. If this trend continues then all fan fiction sites are probably gonna be asked to erase all their content. This makes me sad

If JK didn't want fanfiction on her stories, then she should have joined that group of authors that said, from the beginning, that they don't want fanfiction.

At least one of my favorite authors is on it, and people honor it.

Suing a fanfic writer? isn't that a bit bellow the belt? If they get this guy that puts all fanfic writer's in jepordy. This guy looks entirly innocent. Unless he's planning on publishing the story they have no right to sue him.

That story sounds like a lot of fun. If they can't prove that he is looking for ways to make money off of it, then they probably don't have grounds to sue. I suppose it also depends on how he's promoting it...it all leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Why this guy?

We probably need more information about this to see what's really going on. I doubt JK is suddenly going to be suing fanfiction writers.

I took a look at the site. And it's definitely misleading. The guy's site graphics are good. So, it sort of looks like a promotion for the next book in the harry potter book. If I didn't know it was a fanfiction site, I'd think it was something JK might have put up. Or the WB.

The guy just needs to put up a label saying it's a non-profit harry potter fanfiction site. Smack dab on his intro page so everyone knows.

The loser didn't do that. So, now he's getting threatened by JK. It's should have been the first thing that came to his mind when he created the site.

I think she's taking legal action because he's claiming it to be the 8th Harry Potter book and he hasn't said on the website that he's not JK and put a disclaimer which is what people do when they write fanfiction.

Actually, scroll down just below the intro (after it loads) and it states, very clearly, that "Harry Potter, James Potter and all associated logos and content are copyright J.K. Rowling, Warner Brothers and associated publishers."

He's not claiming the work as his own, he's not trying to make money off of it, he's just trying to get himself famous for writing a piece of fanfiction. That lines covers himself from such threats of legal action. The graphics are amazing but, again, covered. I will seriously lose respect for Rowling is she goes by the way of authors like Anne Rice and sics her lawyers on anyone even considering the thought of writing fanfiction of her work.

i signed up on that site that was posted by Jopotter and after you are given the first password it does have a disclaimer that all harry potter names and james potter names are the owned by jkrowling.

I, too, admit to feeling uncomfortable about the situation.
However, one thing the article does mention is this:
His intention is to release a chapter a day in December, for free.
The word free suggests to me that the guy actually intends to publish it and obtain money for it, which, in that case, is surely against copyright.
JK Rowling has always seemed supportive of FanFiction (remember her quote about them when she told everyone that Dumbledore was gay??) and I think perhaps there is more to this story than meets the eye...

Well, it is for free... So it's not like he's making any profit out of it. He should really have a disclaimer nice and big on every page though. Let everyone know that he's not JK Rowling and all...

I don't see what the problem is. It's just a fan fiction. There's tons of fan fiction out there. it would be different if the characters in that fan fiction weren't credited to J.K. Rowling though. But that could easily be edited in.

I agree. I think I might need more information on this. I just can't believe she's doing this. It makes me think twice about writing ff. I really don't see what the problem is. It's just a ff. He may have needed to change some of the things he did, but it's still just a ff. Right?

Yeah, I agree with Ali...it is just kinda like FFs, I don't really get why legal action should be taken...it's not like he's printing it and selling it and stuff! all this person has to do really is to credit JK Rowling saying the characters aren't his and done!
