Post Discussion thread: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I

The penultimate film of the Harry Potter franchise, Deathly Hallows: Part I, is now officially in theatres - both conventional and IMAX - around the world. We've opened this thread as a discussion board for those who have seen the movie, and would like to discuss it with other members. Please remember to respect one another's opinions, follow the forum and site rules, and avoid getting into arguments/flamewars. For more discussions of the film, please visit Ollivander's Wand Shop where you'll see many more topics!

For those interested, SnitchSeeker's review of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I can be read here; the first official trailer, for those feeling a bit nostalgic, can be viewed below.

We will have box office numbers for this weekend's release - already rumoured to break records - by late Sunday. For now, have fun, cry and laugh over the movie, show a great deal of love for Rupert Grint being fabulous as Ron Weasley (we're not biased), and overall, do enjoy Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I. We certainly did. If you didn't like the movie, or parts of it, you can discuss that, too, please! It doesn't have to be all glowing reviews here; the greater the difference of opinions, the better.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be released November 19, 2010, and July 15, 2011. Click on the banner below to order tickets for Part I, out now, at Fandango. Tickets are also on sale now in the UK; head over to the Harry Potter official UK Facebook for more information.

Well, even Watson herself stated that it really isnt meant for young kids but for teenagers and adults. Its just a natural progression with the characters and story. And after seeing the film i can see where it might be too much for younger kids.

I was disappointed with the movie, everything seemed lacking... the emotion, the feeling that this was the penultimate movie, was absent... sure the younger actors seem to be giving their all in terms of acting (especially Rupert), they unfortunately pale in comparison to the brilliant older cast (even the "polyjuiced trio" in the ministry were amazing)

Bonnie gave an ok performance with what little screentime she was given, but the supposedly tender moment between ginny and harry was made sloppy by the awful camera angles

The editing of the movie was sloppy-- there was emphasis on weird moments in the movie, like when Hermione was about to obliviate the death eater in the diner, what was the dramatic camera panning and music for? he's inconsequential compared to dobby dying which was ruined by Luna's comment about closing dobby's eyes. what could have been an amazing visual of harry manually digging dobby's grave while voldemort is obtaining the elder wand from dumbledore's grave could have been made more dramatic--and ironic in the sense that harry is honoring dobby while voldemort is desicrating dumbledore's grave. the small ironies in the book are lost-- and while the movie essentially followed the narrative of the book, i'm still left with the feeling that they didn't give the book justice
saw this from other forums and I would have to agree. I'm sorry, since you're asking what we think about DH but i hope this kind of review is acceptable here, both sides of review. it's always like that and it's more of the cut of the scenes and the editing. i was always like, 'just like that?' they cut it just like that and move on? if I weren't a reader of this wonderful book, i wouldn't understand it give me a hanging question what did happen or what was that.
i wouldn't complain from ginny cos she's not really much on the book, but i hope they gave justice really for h/g with those small scenes because they focus more on hermione's lovelife and not harry which is supposed to be whole point of the title "harry potter" how he survived is because of love which dumbledore was talking about for the whole cannon thing.

But i think all of them did awesome job as far as acting, especially rupert. So, you're the man, Rupert!

Very nice movie. seen it on first day!!!
i am also an older (25) fan for HP and as pointed out by Lady Fabulous there are some missing ( what everyone should be expecting to be in the movie) things.

i also think that potterwatch and changing image of dumbledore in harry's mind after reading the rita's book.
the dance of harry and hermione was added n comes out to be very good in that situation.

also Harry was very good with kreature later n presents him the fake locket. that part also should have been there in place of what it is there now/!!

still overall it was very nice. and still i am going to watch it again.!!!

I thought POA was the best till yesterday when we got to see DH1. Just too bad this wasn't the standard for all the others but then again, fans always want so much more. Much better acting and sure hope that carries through to DH2. I got over wanting everything from the books in the movies a while back, but have to say they really did justice to the book in so many ways. It was 2 1/2 hours packed full and yet in some ways it seemed like it was, at most, half that time. No way I was going to the bathroom! Rupert has such a comedic bent to his work but really showed a lot more depth than I expected. Have to save up for another go round on this one for sure. No gripes this time!

finally i have got the honor of watching this great film. i year and almost 6 months. there couldnt have been better time to release the movie.
now coming to the review. well. at first i thought it was horribly high paced.. but later i got myself settled with that,

lets start from the beginning.

1-minister of magic's speech, intro of harry, ron and hermione; dursleys departing; and hermione manipulating her parent's memories. everything was brilliantly done. so we can say that the film starts with a BANG. it was hard to stop myself from screaming

2- then., there comes seven potters scene.. it was totally hilarious. very funny. the fight with death eaters and voldi was literally awesome. i was getting high goosebumps at that time.

3- then harry comes to burrow and we see first romantic shot between Ron and Hermione. "Always a tone of surprise", I was sure they were never gonna add this in movie, but that made my tone full of surprise

4- i think they should have been a bit more sad about moody's death. but anyway, never mind that . wedding scene was just fine. i can compromise with not showing R/Hr dance.. After kingsley's patronus, the journey of the trio starts...

5- cafe fight, trio at grimmuald place, kreacher's (very short) tale, R/Hr piano moment, mundungus arriving.. everything was superb . i loved that part

6- Ministry scene was very close to book and i enjoyed it the most. i think everyone knows what happened there. it was really great

7- then in forest the way Ron was shuddering it was a bit scary for his lovers like me . lets skip to ron and harry's fight. it was great and awesome. but i was sad for ron's departure.

8- i was quite surprised by the attitude of harry when ron left. i mean he seemed to be a bit happy with that.. this was strange.. then there comes dance between H/Hr, despite being a R/Hr shipper, i must say it was a pretty good scene. there was no chance of not enjoying it. i actually loved it

9- godric's hollow scene became very very scary to me when nagini attacked harry; and all the fight and escape was brilliant.

10- then there comes most anticipated scene by me. Ron's return. I can say that it was my favorite scene from the movie. by i was a lil disappointed when harry dint say anything about hermione as his sister, neither they hugged each other. i mean it was an emotional moment for both of them. but anyways.. i can compromise with that too

11- xenophilius lovegood was brilliant. whoever played him was outstanding. and the animation of the tale of three brothers was much more awesome that i had thought. it was really EPIC !!

12- chasing scene was cool. i liked that. i dun know why critics dun like it. they say they could have apparated from there too. but i think it wasnt possible at that time. as the snatchers were too close to them and if this is the case then in the book too they could have apparated despite hermione disguising harry. wat u say?

13- malfoy manor. great great great action and everything. hermione's screams were very thrilling; not that i liked her being tortured, but still it was great.

14- now, very honestly speaking, i dint cry at all when dobby died. i mean it was sad watching him die. but wasnt that sad that makes one cry

15- abrupt ending indeed. they should have added a couple of more scenes to make it look like concluded.

overall, brilliant film. absolutely amazing. there is no chance you can ignore it. 10/10 from me

Hey there, I've just signed up here because I couldn't bear it to not be able to take part in the discussion

I like how erveryone has already pointed out what was great and what was missing.
I definitely loved the movie, but when I left the cinema, I couldn't get rid of the feeling that something was missing. It was not a real feeling of disappointment, but I was sure that something important was missing and I didn't like this feeling.
And actually I had realized it while watching the movie: There is too little emotion on some really important parts. Especially when Ron returns. I didn't have the same feeling that the book gave me. His return was such a lovely, warm scene and I loved it when I read it. But in the film it is a bit flat and doesn't really show the close relationships the three (especially Dan and Rupert as best friends) have and have had for several years now.
I really missed this part... the same with the scene in the Malfoy manor, when Ron hears Hermione screaming and just loses it in despair.

Also... even though the film has already been split in two parts, it is still rushed. How long are they travelling? A few months. But here it didn't seem like a few months at all. Actually you couldn't really see how time was passing. Maybe through the scene where Harry gets his hair cut by Hermione, and also when someone (don't know who it was again) mentions that they have been searching for months... but that's it.
Maybe they could've added scenes that show that they are really travelling for a long time. You know, when the music is playing and you see them travelling around, maybe even how Ron's wound is healing slowly and so on...

So basically what I missed in this film is a feeling of time that is passing, and on some important parts the feeling of great emotion. And here I'm not criticizing the actors, who were absolutely brilliant, all of them (!), but the composition of the film.

Maybe this all sounds extremely negative, but I can't get around the feeling, that I'm not absolutely satisfied with the movie, which could have been possible if some details would have been done better. It could have been the PERFECT movie, yay! Now it's only the almost PERFECT movie "Almost" stands for the critique I've just written and some things that were left out, that some of you have already listed, but the "PERFECT" part is the major part here, as the movie was fantastic in a whole. Almost every scene form the book was included in a great way, and I must admit that the settings were beautiful and exactly how I imagined them in the book. The actor's performances were outstanding, not to mention the special effects.
This movie was totally different from the ones before and it takes place so far away from the usual places. It felt really distant and dramatic.
I'm definitely looking forward to July next year!

Seemed to me they used the ancient "Fade to Black" to indicate time passing. But then I'm old and remember B/W films where this was exceedingly common. Not sure "rushed" would be my description but it sure seemed short compared to the actual run time of 2.5 hours. Good points.

I have noticed that a alot of the reviews I've been reading in the trade magazines, even the ones that gave the film positive reviews, thought the ending was far too abrupt and rushed. I still think it should have been cut after the capture in the forest, it REALLY would have given us more to look forward to.

Well, I've just seen HP7p1 again (yay!), and I can honestly say that it's even better the second time!!! I highly recommend that everyone watches it twice A lot of the scenes where things were cut or added seemed to flow better to me than when I saw it the first time -- either because it was expected or because it wasn't as surprising, since the first time I was comparing it to the book. Overall, I was actually a lot more satisfied watching the movie for a second time.

I have just saw the movie, 2hrs ago. I adore it, the best one so far along line with the Books. Even the changes was good for me.

-Harry/Hermoine dance absolutely fantastic. I was against the book in that part, Harry (in the book) didn't do anything to comfort Mione no matter how he felt about doing do. so this additional was very much useful.
-Ron(Rupert) was very surprising for me. I didn't like Ron much before, but today i adored him. In the Minstery was Bloody Brillant, his speech to Mione and Harry. His reactions for the closeness between the other two. I loved him so much.
-The part about the three brothers was definitely good idea.
-The snake part was terrifying, i think the whole audience screamed.
-Dobby was so cute and brave. The audience during his words to Bellatrix clapped for him
- Hermione was perfect, Emma was very good at showing her emotions.
-Draco/ Lucius were so good to see where their choices led them.
-Voldy i Hate him. And since i once heard that as you hate someone in their acting so that's prove that the Actor was good. He was good acting and scared me.

I wished:
- To see Harry's reaction in Sirius 's room, the Photo part wasn't there .
-Luna's paint for her friends, would have been good to see this.

Nothing more, can't wait for the next one. I enjoyed myself pretty much

Wow, I agree with with you on, like, 99.9999% of this! The biggest difference is that I loved Ron long before this movie

I was especially wishing they would put the part about Luna's room in the movie.. I know it's not that important to the plot, but I just loved that part in the book so much! So cute. But I can see why they cut it from the movie.

I just got home from the cinema rite now, and I LOVED IT TO BITS, especially the scene between Ron and Hermionie at the piano, the whole wife thing at the ministry, shell cottage scene as well as the wedding. Fleur's dress waz so beautifull and the decor as well, i'm so excited for the final movie and cannot contain myself as i'm excited and at the same time really sad that its all coming to an end. But the characters will live in my heart forever, as they have been apart of my world for more than ten years and i simply cannot imagine life with out them. Xoxo love harry potter and friends for ever

I really loved the film! It was amazing! I especially liked how they added humour into it for comic relief. But they added just enough so that it wouldn't ruin the seriousness of the situation that they are in. Ron and Hermione were adorable! Dobby's death was heartbreaking, even though I already knew it was going to happen and I swear I heard people sniffling in the audience. I almost didn't want it to end. But it's nice to have something to look forward to the next year. I can not wait for part 2! It will be such a bittersweet moment.

I just got back home from watchin DH for the third time and I found out something !! maybe a goof or some kind of mistake in the movie, and I wish that u guys can confirm my doubts.
When harry, ron and Hermione were runnin through the forest because they were chased by snatchers. Hermione his Harry with a spell the made his face look funny and then she runs towards him, takes off his glasses and put them in her jacket's pocket to make him as unrecognisable as possible…
BUT how the heck Harry was wearin them afterwards, in the malfoy manor's cellar??
Did she give them to him somehow?? Or am mistaken?? Did miss sth??
PLEASE HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!
Have a day full of Harrines !!!!!!!!!
