We will have box office numbers for this weekend's release - already rumoured to break records - by late Sunday. For now, have fun, cry and laugh over the movie, show a great deal of love for Rupert Grint being fabulous as Ron Weasley (we're not biased), and overall, do enjoy Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I. We certainly did. If you didn't like the movie, or parts of it, you can discuss that, too, please! It doesn't have to be all glowing reviews here; the greater the difference of opinions, the better.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be released November 19, 2010, and July 15, 2011. Click on the banner below to order tickets for Part I, out now, at Fandango. Tickets are also on sale now in the UK; head over to the Harry Potter official UK Facebook for more information.

Grr, I've got to wait about a week to post in there. I'm sure by then the discussion will be deeply involved. I hope the thread doesn't crash by next week 'cos I'm sure it will be people will be posting like crazy there.

Seeing it tomarrow morning :)

ronluvhermione 11-19-2010 06:34 AM

I saw the movie last monday. I won 2 free advanced screening tickets over the weekend through my newspaper company. I was beyond excited to see the movie. I am deaf myself and i need closed caption for the movie, but how often do you get to see a movie ahead of its schedule?? So i took a friend who is crazy about HP with me. We knew the book inside out so we could pretty much understand what was going on and what lines could have been said ( i kept reciting lines to my friend of what i think that really happened! ) The movie itself was OMG, amazing. VERY different from any of HP movies due to the fact that they are not in Hogwarts. Its very action packed! The Deathly Hallow story from when Hermione read it was pretty amazing, i was completely in awe with that one! When the movie opened, i had tears due to what was happening in the beginning and how much sacrafices everyone was making. The Voldemort Harry and Voldemort Hermione was very uhmm interesting... too strange for me i guess, but pretty good at the same time. I am going back again hopefully next week when it comes out in captions.

I am really glad i went for several reasons, one was to experience it before anyone could, another was a chance for me to really analize the screen, the things in the room, the characters expressions, the background of what was going on. I would not normally see all of that due to reading the captions and at the movie at the same time. i was able to capture more of the movie more deeply!

The funny thing about the theatre I went to, before the movie started, I was people watching and a lot of people ages varies from a kid to older people. BUT most of people had just Harry Potter t shirt on or scarfs on but thats it while there was two elderly ladies all decked out in costume with witch hats full with HP buttons on it. One lady had a electronic pumpkin with color light changing in it showing Harry Potter's face.. it was awesome!

the con about the movie is, i already spoiled myself by watching too many trailers which pretty much consisited of the whole movie... so i am pledging myself NOT to wach any videos about HP7 part two! I want it to be totallly suprised and really enjoy the movie being in awe of it!

I am so curious of your opinion, or see any pictures if you can post any of what other people or yourself dressed up as! :-) Have fun! ENJOY!

ShiningStar 11-19-2010 06:52 AM

Seeing it a little after noon tomorrow! I can't wait to come back here and see what everyone else is thinking about it.

Mell 11-19-2010 07:00 AM

You know what I loved about this movie? It kept in line with the book. I haven't seen that since HP 1 & 2.

There were slight changes but they were so minor it didn't really matter. Although I would have liked to see Voldermort in Godrics Hollow and OMG that snake scared the crap out of me lol.

And I had been a little worried because I took my 8 year old daughter along with me and I had already heard that it was too scary for younger kids. But my daughter seemed quite fine with it, I did however warn her that the bit with Nagini and Bathilda would be a little frightening so she covered her eyes in that part.

The relationship between the trio was utmost the forefront of this movie and I must say that I liked it. There were some very touching moments between Harry and Hermione but you could see that there was only friendship between the two.

The Ministry break in, I have to say was very amusing.

But the part that is going to have everyone raving and crying is the death of Dobby. If that doesn't melt even the hardest of hearts then there is something wrong with you. LOL. Just kidding.

Totally worth the hype and totally worth the wait. I can't wait for part 2.

Lady Fabulous 11-19-2010 07:19 AM

Some spoilers here... you have been warned

I saw the movie yesterday and as an older (27) Potter fan, I really enjoyed it. Some images in this movie are not for kids, however they do happen in the book. It is fairly accurate for a movie adaptation & the special effects and cinematography were brilliant. The movie has a darkness that the other movies lack, which is important as most of the original HP readers have grown up with Harry and are mostly young adults now. I don't think the movie works as a stand alone film although I suppose it's not meant to anyway. I saw it with a friend who hadn't read DH and she was a bit lost, mainly because so much back story is passed over extremely quickly (especially Harry's visions of Voldemorts actions). For me it was the best Potter film despite remaining incomplete, Part 2 has a lot to live up to.

Pros:
- Snape entering Malfoy Manor
- George Weasley & his toothbrush (got the biggest laugh)
- Kingsley's patronus
- Ron constantly playing with the deluminator
- Ron's alienation & moodiness
- Harry & Hermione dancing, I thought it gave some light to the dark emotional place they were in.
- the silver doe was nicely done
- the 3 brothers narration *loved it*

Con's

- the 7 Potters was over in like, a minute!
- the lack of attention to Rita Skeeter's book
- Godric's Hollow (no Potter memorial)
- lack of back story on the Deathly Hallows (wand, stone, cloak), this may come up in part 2
- Ron's explantion about what's happening at home, Hogwarts, family, taboo etc. was missed
- Where the hell was Potterwatch?!?!?
- Grindelwald was very under used. I don't even think people will remember him for part 2.

I'm sure there's loads more, but that's all I'll write for now.

Steelsheen 11-19-2010 08:19 AM

will have spoilers. you have been warned.

seen it twice now :xd:

it was a pretty good movie, certainly covered most of the highlights and major elements of the first half of the book. but then again for those who are looking for book accuracy, you're not gonna get it. think OOTP movie but with a bit more faithfulness (only a bit ;))

and my one consistent gripe since SS/ PS was the acting from the Trio. surprise!-- no acting gaffes. *shock* they got their game on in this movie :D, which really is more of a "Finally!!" than a "What a pleasant surprise" kind of reaction. i am just so glad that Rupert finally got to ACT again rather than looking totally bored and underused. and i'm not knockin Emma and Dan-- because they can act-- but its pretty obvious that Rupert is the one to watch out for. he's the one with the inborn talent. just sayin.

what is surprising about this movie is the amount of info it managed to convey to audiences--very important specially for non-book readers-- without it feeling like it was dragging. now as i've said above, this doesnt have the book details that some of us fans are looking for, but it covers the major points well enough that it is accurate and moves the story forward. it is Deathly Hallows, not the dreaded DHINO.

well given how much i liked the movie, it can be expected to say that i liked everything about it. so i'm gonna just list the stuff that i remember right now that i liked the most:

- Cinematography. i really like the way they used wide epic shots and the gritty hand-held camera work on this movie. if anything the hand-held camera scenes were more effective-- they were more grounded, you felt the intensity. may not sit so well for those who gets dizzy easily (but dont worry its not as bad as Blair Witch). but camera work is half of the telling of the tale in a film medium, and dang, they really worked it to its full capabilities for this movie.

- the 7 Potters scene was funnier than expected. A credit to Dan given that it was mostly him that pulled off everybody's role.

- Ron (as Reg Cattermole) telling his wife to get the kids and leave. that was one of the "movie fixes" i'm grateful for. in the book it was Harry (as Runcorn) that says that, but i always felt it would be more significant if it was Ron. it would speak a lot about his character, the character he's faking, and even his own future as a husband to Hermione. so yeah, this is one of those things where the movie was better than the book.

- speaking of Runcorn, the guy they hired for that, David O'Hara--fantastic actor! he does look so intimidating but when he was portraying Harry he was so funny, captures the teenage boy mode so well.

- destruction of the Slytherin locket. that was like WOW!factor x10! and nice touch with adding the spiders bit, i didnt think they would remember to add that. and the kiss thing with Horcux!Harry and Hermione-- very well done. it got the message across without it feeling gratuitous.

- the Dance with Harry and Hermione. i dont know what the fuss was about but i thought it was cute :). was it necessary? well the movie would still be great without it, but it was a nice addition to the story overall.

- Hermione obliviates her parent's memories and every trace of her presence in their lives. very moving. great, great addition to the movie. i just wish they stated why Hermione did it. us book fans knows why, but for the non-book readers some would fail to make the connection between that and the trip the Trio was about to make, specially this was shown right at the start of the movie.

- Hermione's torture. now they didnt show much-- just lots of Emma doing a really exemplary job at blood-curling scream. but it was a bit unnerving how Bellatrix seemed to have carved the word Mudblood with her teeth. yikes! enough to make anyone scream like that. but theres probably more torture that they didnt show anymore.

- Dobby's death. every bit as powerful as the book. ok so the sand color wasnt quite the same ;) but they pretty much nailed it book to screen. two thumbs way up!

- Nagini is terrifying. very effective how they used her at certain moments to jolt some energy into the movie (and i'm pretty sure, send a few audiences jolting in their seats as well ;))

- the entire movie. yeah i already said that didnt i? ;)

was there a part there that i didnt like? hmm.... hard to say, because i've long let go of the book-to-screen adaptation that this franchise clearly wasnt going to be. if there was anything i would've wished they done differently was to at least show the significance of Petunia Dursley to Harry and why he has lived under her roof despite her family's mistreatment of him. one of the most wonderful things about JKR's work is that details you thought were trivial arent trivial at all when the threads come together. Harry living with a nasty family wasnt a Cinderella-story-telling technique to feel pity for the main character-- there was a reason why he had to live with them, to keep coming back to them every summer until he reaches of age. so far the film manages to tie the little details together like the book does except that part with Petunia. The most is that they showed her in the car feeling remorseful? worried? or maybe just couldnt wait to get out of crazy town. its a missed storytelling detail that would've been poignant-- specially they had that new scene with Hermione and her parents. still think it could've been integrated somehow. they did mention about the trace and it wearing off when Harry comes of age.

oh and i did wish they showed Luna's drawings of her friends on the wall of her home, even if it wasnt her room, since they did bother to show the insides of the house they could've just plastered it somewhere in the background, instead of the generic psychedelic design that they used.

hmm... thats all i can think of right now. will just add onto this as i remember stuff

#1_harry_potter_fan_22 11-19-2010 08:21 AM

I just got back from seeing it, and I'll post up a review maybe tomorrow, but I just wanted to say that is BY FAR the best film in the series. And I'm going to have to copy Dan, my favorite scene was the added dancing scene between him and hermione, I love it! It was just too sweet!

Vargaroth 11-19-2010 08:24 AM

Too many threads but ill post my review here as well.

I guess im one of the early ones. Ok, um here goes.

Although im not a Potter fanatic like some others as i have not actually read the books. I have read up on the last two installments from the web with random quotes from the book. So with that said i have to say (im preparing to get flamed for this, lol) that if i had to give it a grade it would have to be about a C+ or B- but leaning more towards average.

My biggest issue is i dont think Yates got enough emotion out of Emma or Rupert this time out. Especially when dealing with their relationship and the turmoils that it causes. I think Emma gave more emotion in HBP after seeing the Lavender/Ron kissing scene. It just felt absent or almost non existent. The part of not only when Ron leaves but returns just didnt have the kind of impact that ive read from quoted material from the book so it felt very empty.

And furthering that problem to me is the dancing scene between Harry and Hermione in the tent. It didnt seem like a brother trying to cheer a sister up and came across more as flirtation and desire. I will say that the smokey scene with Harry and Hermione from the Horcrux was done beautifully and if Daniel and Emma dated in real life the chemistry looked solid and very believable. I can only hope the scene with Hermione and Ron is equally as convincing.

There were some great scenes despite my being letdown in the Ron/Hermione dept. The scenes involving Dobby were excellent and the lighter moments (although sometimes misplace in my opinion) with the trio were pretty funny. I got a real kick when early in the film when George sneaked up on Harry and Ginny kissing in the kitchen. Loved it! Also, Bellatrix and Lucius performed very well (forgive me forgetting their names at the moment). One thing that was interesting was i had initially read on here and elsewhere that at the wedding Hermione and Victor Krum were supposed to share a dance. Well, that scene didnt make the cut i guess which again was kind of disappointing to me.

All in all the film was ok, the action was good when it was there but felt a little forced too much and seemed to leave more out than it should have. I know they have limitations on how long the movie can be but even just a half hour more probably would of benefitted the film better. If there ever was a case for me to read the books this film would be the reason why. I just hope that Pt 2 rebounds and ends the film series nicely.

Abbie Lynne 11-19-2010 09:08 AM

It. Was. Amazing!!

Loved:
-When Harry and Hermione danced, it was cute and funny. They had some touching moments that were wonderful but strictly platonic.
-The Ron/Hermione! OMG! How they showed their hands close together, awww! And in the cafe, when Ron touches Hermione's cheek -- AWWW! And when Hermione was teaching Ron to play a bit of piano. I just loved them!
-The deathly hallows animation. Incredible, I stared transfixed at it. Unable to look away.
-The music. Awesome score!
-The part when they infiltrate the ministry.
- The fight was so sad! And when Ron asked Hermione if she was coming or not. Heartbreaking!
-Dobby! Enough said. He was great, even more heart breaking when he died.
-Great acting, especially Ron (I love Ron) *faints*
-They mentioned Hermione's perfumeeeeee!!!
-Seven Potters!
-A LOT of book quotes! The "Holey" joke part, and "Always The Tone of Surprise"
I just loved to everything so much!!!

I WISH:
-They had Ron freak out more during Hermione's torture, they needed to be a lot more frantic.
-Ron and Hermione should have danced at the wedding -- darn it. I was really hoping that they would dance but nooo! xD
-The Harry/Ginny, loved their kiss and stuff at the burrow!
-I wish I heard Bellatrix scream CRUCIO! Louder, the screaming should have been louder. Ah well.
-No Potterwatch. :(

I can't think of much now, I JUST got back and my mind is blown! I can't think straight! So this is my review so far. But All in all, it was incredible and beautiful, my favorite so far!!

Tommy'sGirl4ever 11-19-2010 09:19 AM

YEAH! Somebody mentions Potterwatch up there ^^

and that's weird, I was waiting for it because I heard an MP3 of the Potterwatch from the movie. It was actually from the movie. Maybe it was just cut out? or maybe it'll come up in the next movie? I have no idea.

but all in all- this movie was beautiful.
Plain and simple. I don't even care about what they left out or whatever, it was beautiful and by far my favorite.

masterofmystery 11-19-2010 09:34 AM

^ Actually, the Potterwatch audio clip recording by the Phelps twins was for the DH 1 video game, not movie.

lugen 11-19-2010 09:52 AM

i saw it last wednesday, and it was just so lovely

-the music was perfect, Alexandre Desplat !!

-some parts of it were done very literally to the book, when other r not so much

-some of it was a bit like .. i dunno, i mean i couldnt find the purpose of their dance, i mean its lovely and everything but i dunno :erm:

-the kiss between Harry and Hermione was a bit over-rated but i guess that's really Ron's nightmare or the thing that'd scare the hell out of him

-that perfume thing, and Greyback staring right at Hermione is really FREAKY

-when Ron leaves it was really sad

-AND BTW??? WHAT THE HECK?? when did they ever travelled walking??

-when Ron returns i expected Hermione to hit him more

-and the thing that happened to me, and i was VERY SHOCKED is that i genuinely wanted to CRY !!! i dunno, but i was really emotional and that doesnt happen alot

-the Minister's speech was great, he really is an auror

-here's a review >> Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 (2010) - Critics' Reviews - MSN Movies

-the obliviation scene, and Hermione's pictures was really sad but also lovely

-the animation for the tale of the three brothers was also lovely

- Harrty and Ginny's kiss was so cute, but when George cut it, it was like hysterical

-Hermione giving Harry a haircut ?? WTH??
i dunno what else i'd like to add, but i'll come back here :D

Luinevaug 11-19-2010 11:23 AM

I agree with what has been said so far about the pros. I was very impressed with just how close they actually stayed to the book this time. It had a much more somber mood than the rest of the movies so far but I did feel like it was needed, especially with the detail that they mostly managed. I was very impressed with the three brothers animation although disappointed that they didnt but the pictures in Luna's room on there. Also, I felt like the acting went a lot more smoothly in this one than in previous ones

I have some cons too, I agree with Lady Fabulous about some points:

I was definitely expecting more at Godric's Hollow, at least that statue, it really stood out to me when I read the book, and the part that was graffitied.
As well as Grindelwald, his story was extremely vital in the book and kind of underplayed a bit here.

But overall, I loved it! Definitely want to see it again, though with not so many people shouting and gasping and stuff. :P

farahq 11-19-2010 12:39 PM

I'VE SEEN THE FILM YESTERDAY WITH SOME FRIENDS. I KNEW I WAS GOING TO CRY WHEN DOBBY DIES,SO I WAS PREPAIRED. IT WAS SO AMAZING AND SO EPIC! I TOTALLY LOVE THE MOVIE AND WILL DEFINITELY SEE IT MANY MORE TIMES.

So what i really liked is the MUSIC. It is so perfect and makes all the scenes ''pop''. Follows the book closely, and then makes up a few additional scenes that are fantastic! The special effects were SO BRILLIANT!!!!!! The trio's acting is also one of the best thing in this film. And Helena (Bellatrix) is amazing!Creepy! There is the animated sequence detailing the "Tale of the Three Brothers", while Hermione is reading. It is a daring move from the filmmakers, one that will pleasantly surprise the audience. And of course the scene with Dobby. I really cried. Oh..*eyes filled with tears.*

Dark and thrilling. I absolutely love it. Brilliant. A true masterpiece! Unbelievable! And i will definitely see it again and again! HP RULES!♥

longlivetoni 11-19-2010 03:59 PM

my main issue was Dobby. the movies have never done him justice, and he has always come across as an annoying Jar Jar Binks type character in the movies. i think a lot of it has to do with the voice acting, which i GUESS they can't avoid because they felt tied to the same guy who did it in Chamber of Secrets. i have always wished they could have just gotten Jim Dale to do it. also the writing wasn't fantastic for Dobby in this movie. he had that long speech about freedom or whatever while bellatrix and the malfoys were staring at him before they apparated. that would not have happened in the book, i don't think bellatrix would have passively listened to that dumb speech. and then after they apparated, he had ANOTHER speech about how pretty the beach was and how much he liked his friends that i didn't like either. there's something about the suddenness of his death in the book that was awesome to me, how he was only able to say the words "harry potter" before passing is much more effective i think.

i had a few more tiny problems with the movie, but that was the biggest one i think. i loved the acting (for once), and the other action and emotional scenes were great. best movie of the series.
