Post David Yates talks Half-Blood Prince dark themes

Director David Yates was recently quoted by the Associated Press on the dark themes situated throughout Half-Blood Prince:

Quote:
Meantime, Harry struggles to get on with the usual teenage pressures of school, social activities and budding romance.

"We've got some really playful sequences and some material that obviously dips into the darker world of `Potter,'" director David Yates said. "As the series matures, it tonally does get darker overall. It's sort of inevitable as you follow the material. The kids are getting older, more mature and complex."
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will come to theatres July 17, 2009.

Roro Numero Uno Hogwarts Rules!

Hmmm it's sort of weird how they keep talking about it getting darker and darker when it's going to be rated PG...can't be that dark

I'm wondering if they intentionally rated it PG so that the audience would be pleasantly surprised and not so disappointed...who knows. Lower expectations!

Umm ... yeah. I can't really see how HBP is as dark as they say, especially with a PG rating. Then again, PoA was pretty dark-ish for a PG rated movie. I guess I'll make my final decision if HBP is as dark as they say or not when I actually get to see it.

Hm...not many of the PG movies I've seen were all that dark, but whatever. I'm pretty open minded, so I guess I'm fine with whatever.

I can't believe its rated pg....and usually the US is sooo picky about how they rate their movies!! usually so strict, so it can't be totally dark

Interesting repeated comments and, as usual, kind of lacking substance. I know they can't let out too much, but give us a bit more, mr Yates.

I'm just wondering, why did the film get a PG rating? A lot of people describe the film as "hormonal". Don't those kind of films get PG-13 ratings?

Frankkly, I'm getting tired of hearing all this "darker world of 'Potter'". Well, if they read the book more closely, it's supposed to be "darker". I'm a bit tired of hearing this adjective being used too often. I really don't care if it's a PG or a PG-13 either. We already know that we're all going to watch it in spite of the rating. Further, it would have been great if they got another/different director to do the last movie(s). Couldn't they get the director from the 3rd HP film - Coron? Now, he was really good.

I agree with Freya! I want something that is dark! i want it to be moving you know? I want to feel the pain when Dumbledore dies. I want to feel the anger and hatred towards Voldemort that the characters have. It was so powerful in the books.

Again yall- PG dont mean a whole lot these days-someone gave Chronicles of Narnia as an example-my niece said it was scary and was PG. Like somebody here just said, blowing the ratings for HBP way out of proportion. I dont agree w. movies rated PG-13 these days-some should be questionable and moved to NC-17 even. So dont go having negative thoughts about HBP-it will be coming soon and then yall can make the judgment call after seeing it 4-5 times each

Tired of the references to darkness....getting a bit old. It is PG and it follows the book, which to me, is PG-13 material....but let's face it, PG is for a much wider audience, hence more $$$ for Warner Bros.

I'm going to have to read the book again, because all I remember is the sillyness that is Dan falling in love with Ginny, Hermione upset with Ron cause of Lavendar and the Quidditch game. I'll keep my opinion open until I see the movie and decide if it's dark or not. lol

they keep on saying its getting darker..um..like, they say it every movie!! and now..try to compair, say, the basalisk sceen in CoS and the Voldermort coming back to life scene in GoF. Okay, i know its more seriouse having Voldy back, then a basalisk killed, but..violence, and darkness wise, its not MUCH darker!! and i mean, sure the Inferi scene is gonna be awsome and all! but..this book was mainly a romantic comidy, witch is nice, and it makes it better its set in a harry potter world, but like..yea! the darkness of potter!! hwere has it gone? we will deffently have it in movies 7 and 8 though!! YAY!!
