Upper Floors It becomes more airy as you make your way to the upper floors of the castle. Here the tallest towers can be accessed and just maybe you will discover somewhere that, if you have to ask, you'll never know, but, if you know, you need only ask.

Default Battlements

High above overlooking the lake and a section of the grounds are the castle battlements. During the Battle of Hogwarts, the battlements where used to defend the school from Lord Voldemort and his allies. This is also where Sirius Black rode away on Buckbeak the hippogriff, but keep that hush hush. Though some damage remains, the battlements remain fairly intact and provide an opportune place to be when an enemy is approaching.

The battlements provide a nice view from a high vantage point. More often than not, the Giant Squid can be seen bathing himself in the sunlight; thestrals (if you can see them) fly above the trees at the edge of the lake; and if you look closely you'll be able to follow the road that leads to the Entrance Gates. If you're feeling up to climbing the tight spiral staircase to get there, know that it is worth the effort. There are wooden crates and barrels for you to sit on at the top should you need to catch your breath.

The battlements had easily become one of Jae's favorite places in the castle. Though, technically, it was outside of the castle.

It wasn't because of the history — though he supposed surviving a war did add a certain dramatic flair to the architecture — but because nobody really came up here unless they meant to. Too many stairs. Too much wind. Too little immediate entertainment for the average student and plenty of other distractions on the way to get here.

Which meant space. Space to think. Space to breathe. Space to move.

The late afternoon air curled cool against his skin as he balanced one foot atop an old wooden crate near the wall, head bowed slightly while he fiddled with the dial of a portable WWN radio resting beside him. Static crackled sharply through the speakers before dissolving into another station entirely — tinny wizarding adverts, some DJ from Dublin, more static.

"Non, non, non…" he muttered under his breath, brows knitting and lips puckering.

A quick flick of his wand followed, paired with a murmured adjustment charm he'd spent an embarrassing amount of time perfecting over the years specifically for this purpose. Another couple of minutes passed and, finally, the static gave way to a crisp beat layered beneath rapid Korean vocals.

"Ahh yeaaaaaaaah."

Jae stepped away from the crate, rolling one shoulder and then the other as the music settled into the open air around him. The warm-up started almost automatically by now — neck stretch, arms crossing over his chest, a slow bend at the waist before he sank into a loose crouch and bounced lightly back onto the balls of his feet. Even standing still, he rarely fully stood still.

The setting sunlight and scattered torchlight caught intermittently against the silver accents stitched into the oversized black hoodie, the fabric shifting with him as naturally as water. One foot slid back as his torso snapped forward into the rhythm, shoulders hitting the beat before the rest of him followed. A pivot. A glide. His hand cut cleanly through the air while his weight shifted seamlessly into the next sequence, the choreography carrying his favorite contradiction of precision wrapped inside something that looked effortless and the stones beneath him were just another stage.

A sharp turn whipped the hem of his hoodie outward as the choreography shifted into the chorus, shoulders hitting first, then the precise drag of his hand near his mouth in time with the lyric before he dropped low into the footwork. One palm skimmed briefly against the stone to steady the descent, only for him to drive straight back upward on the next beat, fluid and exact like the floor itself had bounced him back into motion.

To this adventurous first year Slytherin, it felt as if she had explored everywhere there was to explore at Hogwarts, but, as it turned out, she'd forgotten all about one particular place. The battlements. Others had told her not to bother with it - something about there being too many stairs and nothing to do, blah blah blah - but Mei now felt a pull to see it and decide for herself.

So, with nothing but the jumper on her back (and all her other clothes, obviously) and a blasé attitude, she set off on her adventure!

.......

A HUNDRED BILLION STAIRS LATER and she reached... half way, and was diiiiiiizzyyy.

Did the stairs really need to be so... twirly? Couldn't they have created some kind of charm or another where you just stand on a stair and that stair does ALL the moving and climbing for you? Was it really necessary to have a HUNDRED BILLION STAIRS? Maybe those other students weren’t wrong after all. But Mei was too stubborn and she had committed to this exploration.

She trudged her way up the remaining stairs, her usually endless supply of energy depleted. At least, whenever she finally did reach the top, she could say she had done it. That was something at le-

Then, somewhere around stair two hundred billion (probably), she heard... music? No, static? No, it was definitely music, and it seemed to be coming from somewhere above her, floating down the down the spiral staircase with a pleasant bounce.

With renewed curiosity and purpose, she made her way up the remaining stone steps, pausing just before she reached the top because there was someone there. (You mean the music did come from no where? Shock!) She could see now that the music was actually coming from a little radio that was balanced on a crate.

Mei watched, head cocked, as the older boy moved to the music, surprisingly fluid for someone so long-looking. She didn’t want him to scare him and him to, like, fall over the edge or something, so she decided she would wait until the song had finished to interrupt him. Which was very polite of her, if she did say so herself. Let's just hope her ragged breathing wasn't too much of a distraction. Heh.
