Meet Hera!

Hello Newbies!... and others This month I will be one of the two SS staff members you can meet. First and foremost, welcome to SS! I hope you all have a funfilled and memorable time here.

Right so... introductions. I will be brief, so that way you can ask me questions and 'discover' me. My name is Emily, I live in Western Australia. I'm a High School teacher, my area of expertise is in social studies, history and english.

I have numerous hobbies (asside from SS), which include reading, writing (yes I was a Ravenclaw)... singing and dancing (though I'm not very good at either), I used to love horse riding and ice skating, I love listening to classical piano, I drink at least three cups of tea a day..... and I think I'm getting carried away.

In terms of SS, I became a member in September of 03, played two terms before I became inactive (too much travelling and family drama), then I returned in December of last year and rekindled my relationship with SS. Now I'm well and trully addicted (again) and will be here for quite a while. I played as a student last term and was looking forward to the next term when *drumroll*.......... I was asked to become a staff member, and so here I am in the flesh/text-flesh. This will be my first term as a staff member, so it will be a learning curve for me. But I am super excited to share the experience with you all.

Also as of Wednesday I will be travelling around the UK, so feel free to ask me about my experiences

So without further ado... please come, read, ask me questions, get to know me and hopefully I will get to know you also.

I'm very glad you asked that question. Originally I was introduced to Harry through the Prisoner of Azkaban book, but of course being the third in the series I sdidn't quite get into it and so at the time I decided I sisn't like it. Then I went to see HP and the Philosphers Stone when it came out in cinema for a school excursion and immediately fell in love with it. So then I got all the books and watched all the movies.

Haha.. well I'm a High School teacher so I'm sure its different to Primary School... but its great. Everyday is different- and I assure you its NEVER boring. There are plenty of good moments and plenty of moments that make to think... 'why teaching?' But at the end of the day I love working with kids, and exploring new ways of fascilitating their learning.

Well as I've mentioned in one of the earlier posts I chose the name mostly because I like the sound of it. But also because of the link to the Goddess of Marriage in Greek Mythology. Hera- Goddess of Marriage is one of Zeus's wives, and is the arch nemesis to Hercules- step son. I think she's a really interesting character.

Ooohh brilliant question. I'd have to say my favourite is Remus Lupin... purely because he has a very hands on approach to teaching- which I like. And aside from the fact that he is an amazing character and is of course very knowledgeable in the field, he's also my favourite because he's a little understated. You had Quirrell who was- in my opinion a stuttering lunatic, then you had Lockhart... who was an epic failure, Remus of course. Umbridge was a horrible woman, Moody wasn't really moody and well Snape is Snape-I like him but when it comes to DADA Lupin takes the cake

i rarely see hp fans that their fave character is remus lupin!!! that is just awesome. you see im a die hard fan of lupin too... and not to mention tonks!


anyhoo... i've already posted my question but since your a lupin fan too...

yes yes we do.. we have primary school years 1-6, highschool 7-12 (though it used to be 8-12 which was way better)

Ooohhh favourite spell!!! *thinks* I think I'd have to go with the Patronus charm... just because its not only incredibly useful but its also really pretty. I wonder what animal mine would be

Haha nnaaaw hehe I love you too!!! Lupin is totally awesome! And I do love Tonks, they're sooo good together... even thought they're quite different they compliment each other.

One: I know you said your expertise in RL is Social Studies, English, and History .... BUT in regards to Wizarding World Subject Matters, if you could teach ANY subject offered at Hogwarts, which would teach and why? Would this be different from the subject you would take / your favorite subject?

Two: How is that when you're 12 hours away from me timezone-wise, we can manage to speak more frequently then when you're only 5 hours away? clearly, you're having too much fun without me =(

Lol ooohhh I likes your questions. Well I think in terms of WW subjects I'm pretty much staying true to myself here in that I would love to teach Herbology hehe- hence why I chose Herbology. I just love the outdoors, flowers and plants and I do like getting down and dirty in the soil.Having said that though... I think Flying or DADA would com in at a tie for second place. I love the idea of quidditch... I'd like to think I'd be good at it, and DADA is a subject for the cool kids... and I'm clarly cool with a capital K

If I was a student... favourite subjects would probably be Flying... DADA followed by a tie for third with potions and herbology...

Yep I think thats right... think thats how I'd do it.

I know it seems silly right. But I suppose here I'm constantly touring. I get to go online for half and hour to an hour or more in the morning (usually 6.30) and then in the afternoon or at night before bed.
At home... I'm online more frequently. When I wake up... (8 or 9) and I'll have my laptop open for most of the day so I can keep an eye on things... but then I'm always online in the afternoon and at night... and I go to bed really late. (1 or 2) every morning...

So it kind of makes sense... 12 hours isn't a bad number... your lunchtime is my midnight... and I'm crazy enough to be awake at midnight all the time... then my mornings are your night... vice versa.

Also at home I have msn... so we chat more ... but my netbook is too slow to support msn

Not long to go now though. In the Scottish Highlands, heading for Glasgow today for one last day/night then heading to Ireland in the next day!!! yay!!!
Then once we've been around Ireland, I have 3 days in London then head home, and I will return to my epic onlineness...

Oh wow. ^^ Over here in the U.S. we have primary, middle school, Junior High, and High school. We have to be in school until we're at least 18. What happens when the kids graduate high school?

Oh wow... well we graduate high school when we're seventeen. Technically we have what you call middle school, junior high and high as well except for us... the standard is as I've already mentioned primary 1-6 then highschool 8-12, but within that we have lower school which is 7 and 8, middle school which is 9,10 then upper school which is 11, 12. But all within the same institution.

As for what happens when we graduate.... it depends on the person. I went to university straight out of highschool for 4 years... others might choose to go to what we call TAFE, which is like a college I suppose but generally based around trades. People usually do their apprenticeships through TAFE, so some might do that after highschool but most start going to TAFE part time in year 10... or even full time, depending on whether they want to drop out or not.

Umm.... I think I explained that alright... I hope it makes some sense to you

Ok... I've come to the conclusion...that my favourite movie character (also being based on my favourite literature characters) include these three:
(I know you asked for one... but its just toooo hard.)

Heathcliff as played by Tom Hardy (Wuthering Heights, 2009)
Mr Darcy as played by Matthew McFayden (Pride and Prejudice, 2005)
Andrew Paxton as played by Ryan Reynolds (The Proposal, 2009)

Ok so... the first two are my main ones, my third one I included because it is not based on a novel (that I'm aware of), and because I just LOVE LOVE LOVE Ryan Reynolds. So um yes....

haha um.. well I have lots of favourite books... I have trouble selecting just one... Um... obviously the Harry Potter series rates highly with me

But aside from them I enjoy anything by Lisa Unger (such as Die For You), or Jane Austen (Pride and Prejudice)...
But yes... I have many many many favourites.

One I also particularly enjoyed in High school was Black Foxes by Sonia Hartnett (Australian writer).

Movies... I have heaps again I struggle to stick to just a couple.
Anything with Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynlds, Robert Downey Jr, Brad Pitt...

Though at this very moment the movie I am most obsessed about would ahve to be................ the tourist with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie.

Oohh that reminds me! Salt was another really really good movie...
and the Bourne trilogy...

I became obsessed in 2001 (I think it was)... when the first movie was released. I never got into the books until I saw the first movie, purly because I started readign them out of order and thought it was weird. Hi there, well this thread is designed for users- such as yourself to get to know me. But there are other ways of getting to know people. Simply join in the fun, play games with us, and join the RP next term, wirte a fanfic, join a fanclub and that way you will be sure to meet new people. Also by clicking on the user you want to communicate with you can send them VM's (visitor messages) or PM's (private messages) and strike up a conversation that way. Most people will be happy to respond and get to know you.

haha yes I have... sadly I've only ever lived in one city.... one suberb... one house. I've never had the experience of moving before.

But I'm planning on moving over to England for a couple of years... hopefully sometime soon.

Good question

When I first started reading HP, I always wanted to be in either Gryffindor (because I love the Marauders) or Slytherin (because I love Draco Malfoy).... but when it really comes down to it, I know that if I was to be sorted I would be placed into Ravenclaw. Even to this day, whenever I take a sorting quiz or even one of those random ones I always end up being a Ravenclaw.
(I was a Ravenclaw before becoming a staff member ) ... I miss the blue....

But yes, I am very much a Ravenclaw fanatic now, and its great because blue is my favourite colour.

So my answer is... RAVENCLAW!!!
