The walls in the first-floor corridor are covered in tapestries and, hung over them, are portraits of numerous witches and wizards. Whether you are trying to get to class or are just browsing around, the portraits here will try to start up a conversation with you. If you manage to get on their good side, they'll be willing to reveal secret passageways, share the latest school gossip, and more.
If you have time to spare, definitely go on a brief tangent from whatever it is you are doing. Google Stump is your man to go to if you're looking for answers about the mysteries of the castle; Beaumont Marjoribanks can tell you everything there is to know about gillyweed; and Elizabeth Burke ... well, it would be best to just avoid her for reasons that will be obvious should you strike up a discussion with her about magical blood status. There are other portraits here as well, each with their own unique personalities, and figures from other portraits happen to invade their frames from time to time.
Ariadne wasn't usually someone that angered her peers enough to the point where they'd chase after her. Today though was another matter apparently since she in Transfiguration class had by pure accident managed to make two guys porcupines turn into very, very fine pink cushions and they had both seen totally red.
Ariadne had barely managed to gather up her supplies in her satchel and left class to go to lunch before the guys were on her. Hurrying into the portraits lined corridor Ariadne yelled up to the walls out of breath. "Help! Please, someone! Hide me, I didn't turn those porcupines into pink cushions on purpopse....I don't want to get hurt."

Having wrapped up a History of Magic lesson a few minutes early, Vashti was closing the classroom door after the students had already hurried out and down toward the Great Hall for lunch. She tapped her wand on the noticeboard outside the room to update it with homework information, and with that done, she planned to head down for lunch as well.
But the frantic voice of a student calling for help gave her pause. She turned and spotted the Hufflepuff fifth year hurrying down the corridor.
Vashti moved briskly in her direction. "Miss Rose? What's wrong?" she asked, concern evident in her voice.

Aurora had only left Transfiguration class a few moments ago and was making her way to lunch when out of nowhere she heard Ariadne yelling for help in utter panic. Aurora turned around immediately, concerned for the other girl. She felt some relief that there was a Professor around because it seemed that things were serious if Ariadne was this scared.
"What happened?" She added on to what the Professor already asked as she made her way over to her Housemate. There was something about porcupines turning into pink cushions??
She normally would have greeted Professor Amstern, but right now she was just worried about what was happening with her friend. "We won't let anyone hurt you."

The portraits Ariadne hoped would give her advice was staying very silent as heard running footsteps come nearer and nearer. Sitting down on the floor, and hugging her knees Ariadne was making herself as small as possible when Professor Amstern came into view. Just moments after Aurora also arrived and they both asked the same question, and Auroras reassurance calmed her somewhat.
Watering her lips, Ariadne eyes darted around as she took a long breath before explaining her predicament. With a professor here she was safe at least for now. Looking up and between the professor and Aurora she shared with them unsure who to direct it too. "Hi Professor Amstern! Hi Aurora. I turned two seventh year boys porcupines into shocking pink pin cushions in transfiguration class by accident since my aim was totally off today, and the two boys both went super angry, and said they were going to hex me. I tried to apologize to them but they didn't listen, instead they began to chase me, and that's why ended up here....I don't want to be hexed or hurt...."

Vashti offered a nod in acknowledgement to Ms. Bay when she arrived to also help Ms. Rose. It seemed good for the girl in distress to have a friend here with her as well.
Seeing as Ms. Rose had seated herself on the ground, Vashti knelt down so that she was on the same level as her as the fifth year explained her situation. How disappointing to hear that two seventh years would respond so poorly to a harmless accident like this. It was one thing to be frustrated if someone messed with the object one was practicing on, even accidentally. But if an apology had been given - and she did believe Ms. Rose when she said she had tried to - then that ought to have sufficed. Other adjustments could be made from there. It was entirely inappropriate for the boys to respond by threatening her.
"I see," Vashti replied. "I won't let them hurt you, Miss Rose. Their behavior is unacceptable, and I will deal with them. Can you tell me their names?" She cast a glance down the corridor, just in case they appeared around the corner. "I'm sure Professor Stone would like to hear about this as well." Her fellow professor would not tolerate this kind of behavior either, especially not in her classroom.

Once Ariadne had explained the situation and both of them were nearby to comfort her, Aurora relaxed enough to offer the professor a smile. She was still worried about her friend, but she knew that nothing would happen to her.
As Professor Amstern explained things, Aurora took a seat on the floor beside Ariadne. "Yep, nothing bad will happen to you. It was an accident, and they're ridiculous for getting so mad at you about it." It wasn't as if the magic couldn't be undone or anything. Aurora was trying to be as reassuring as she could.
Sitting on the floor Ariadne's big scared eyes still darted left and right. Worrying that the boys were going to show up any minute in the corridor. That Aurora sat down next to her on the floor, and that Professor Amstern seemed certain that she hadn't done anything wrong was reassuring, a relief even. Licking her lips Ariadne chose her words as she said to both Aurora and Professor Amstern. "I don't know or remember their names exactly, but I think they play quidditch for their houses. Do we have photos of the players in the house teams?" Ariadne didn't know since she wasn't on the Hufflepuff team for either quidditch or gobstones, but always cheered in the stands at all the matches to support her peers. "If we figure out the two boys names, what will happen to them?"
It was her bad aiming that had gotten her into this situation in the first place. "Is there an extra curricular where you can practice how you aim your spells better? I don't want to end up in more trouble." The last was directed to professor Amstern.

When Ms. Bay kindly sat next to Ms. Rose to comfort her, Vashti returned the smile. It seemed, with her assurances and with her friend beside her, Ms. Rose was more at ease, even just a little, which was good to see.
"I imagine Professor Springer would have that information in her files. We could check with her to see if you recognize any of them as the two from your lesson." Each Head of House likely would have that information as well, but the Flying and Quidditch Instructor seemed like the best option to cover all angles, if the two were indeed Quidditch players. As for what would happen to them? "If they are on their house's team, that will likely be affected, as well as any other punishment deemed fitting." Detention at minimum, in Vashti's opinion, but she wanted to determine the extent of that with her fellow professors once the perpetrators were found. She did not want to rush into the specifics just yet.
"The Duelling Club might be a good place to start," she said in answer to Ms. Rose's next question. "All skill levels are welcome, and I'm sure if you ask Professor Khanna, they'd be happy to allow you to practice your aim on the practice dummies on your own time too." It spoke well of the Hufflepuff that she wanted to improve, though it was unfortunate that it had caused her so much stress today.

It was a good thing that Professor Amstern was there. She wasn’t just friendly, but also reassuring. Aurora knew that no one would even try to hurt Ariadne with a teacher around. If it had just been the two of them, Aurora would have done her best to stand up for her friend.
If they were on the Quidditch team, Aurora sure hoped it wasn’t on the Hufflepuff one, though she couldn’t see any of her teammates being a bully. They would know soon enough though. ”If you want I can come with you, Ariadne.” Give her some company and support. ”Duelling Club is a great idea.” She wasn’t in the club herself, but Professor Dhruv was awesome. And it would be a great way for Ariadne to learn how to defend herself if needed.
My oh my... whatever was this gossip about Beaumont Marjoribanks did not know, but what he did know was that lighting was always a good day to talk about gillyweed. "You can always try gillyweed. Its a wondrous magical plant, swimming underwater for up to an hour. Those gills would look so great on you."
Winifred rolled her eyes over at Beaumont. "OH would you shut it, gillyweed will do nothing towards helping to know the identities of these lads. But asking us may help. Can you provide us with some more details. Do you know what color house robes they were wearing?" Surely the young Miss Rose could provide something to go off other than quidditch. She just was living for this gossip though. Perhaps there was some juicy love story in the making.
