Accessible from the castle via the Clock Tower, the courtyard is both a throughway, leading to the wooden bridge which spans the nearby ravine, and a popular area of the grounds in its own right.
Many students spend their free time here outside of classes, particularly during break or lunch. Between lessons, this area is usually crowded with students catching up with their friends, getting in a round of gobstones, or lingering under the pear tree while they wait to head to their next class. A covered cloister surrounds the paved courtyard, and stone benches are spaced throughout the covered area, as well as dotted around the courtyard itself. Much of the architecture is in the gothic style, from the arches to the gargoyle parapets.
In the middle of the courtyard is an ancient fountain flanked by stone eagle sculptures, their features somewhat worn away by the elements over the years. Feel free to make a wish and toss a coin into the fountain, but be aware that once it's gone, it's gone. Any attempts to retrieve it will be unsuccessful, as the coin will keep magically sinking out of reach. Do not try to jump into the fountain; staff will take pains to rescue you, but they're unlikely to be very impressed.
An addition to the courtyard as of 2104 is a bronze plaque, hanging on a restored pillar, its cracks and missing pieces clearly visible to those who take a good look. Both the pillar and its commemorative feature have now been charmed to prevent theft. The plaque reads:

It might be the middle of December, bitter cold and quite snowy outside but this all gave Bryony even MORE reason to want to be out there. There was so much possibility outside in the fresh air, it didn't matter that her cheeks were already stinging from the cold the second she stepped out into the courtyard. Long blonde hair was tucked beneath a colorful winter hat, matching scarf around her neck and gloves on her hands. Warm pink winter boots were worn on her feet which matched her winter coat. And now... Her cheeks.
"Snow!" she exclaimed excitedly (or as best as she could with a Mandrake leaf in her mouth!), shaking Ary's hand as she clasped his fingers in her own. Surely the boyfriend knew of the snow long before they ventured out into it but still... She loved snow! The brightest of smiles on her face had to tell anyone so. Big blue eyes surveyed the snow covered grounds before them. There was so much they could do!

Just kidding! Sometimes it did! Today was one of those days when he was on the fence about it. He was all bundled up against the sting of the wind, coupled with Heating Charms. At least the hand that Bry was holding onto was snug and unbothered. Now, he was here to support his girlfriend in her Animagus journey, as was evidenced by the Mandrake leaf in her mouth. That didn’t mean he couldn’t have a little fun with her about it though!
“No? Whatever are you replying to, Bry? I didn’t ask anything.” Aryan hid his smile well. Of course he knew she had said ‘snow’. He would have suggested they have a snowball fight but he wasn’t going to risk the leaf escaping her mouth.

Was he sure about that? Because she thought the boyfriend looked almost frozen already. Poor boy. If he needed some cuddles to help warm him up even more, this girl was here for it. She might be on the smallish side still (not nearly as tiny as she had been during their first year) buuuuuut she was almost always warm. Or well... She hid being cold quite nicely.
Bryony couldn't be more happy with all the love and support she was getting from everyone around her about her training. Particularly from Ary. Having him at her side always meant the world to her. And she knew for a fact that sometimes she could be... Overwhelming. Yet, here he was. Helping her through yet another tough time in her Animagi training. Having somehow torn the Mandrake leaf she had been keeping in her mouth during the previous full moons, this wasn't her first rodeo in doing this. The process was very much a learn by the day type of thing. So far this time around everything was going smoothly. Thank Merlin!

Ary was quite sure. But he wouldn’t say no to cuddles, just not an excessive amount of it; he did not fancy getting Bry into trouble, mostly because Professor Hady too had a stellar reputation to uphold here at Hogwarts. But this was not the time nor place, not when he wanted Bry to succeed with this step in her Animagus journey.
It made sense Ary was being supportive. What sort of boyfriend/best friend would he be if he wasn’t? Despite all the emotions he went through because, yes, Bry can be overwhelming at times, he had had a lot of experience with it all. So she need not worry, he was more than capable of taking care of himself.
The girlfriend was too smart not to figure out what he was up to. Apparently he wasn’t though? Aryan certainly hadn’t expected her to fling a snowball at him! He hopped out of the way in the nick of time but then he stood there with his hands on his hips, his gaze fixed sternly on Bry. “I refuse to have a snowball fight while you have that leaf in your mouth, Bry! It could fall out.” Someone had to be the responsible person today and it was definitely going to have to be him.

Bry was the luckiest. But Ary also knew he was incredibly lucky to have her, too so it was a win-win relationship for the both of them. And it was fortunate for her that he was determined to see her Animagus training successfully through this time around. In all honesty, he had expected the girlfriend to want to do something wild so he had been prepared to let her down. He wasn’t sorry about it, at least not for this.
Ary lowered his hands thoughtfully. Building a snowman - or a snow creature - wouldn’t entail much heavy lifting. Magic could be used to shape the snow if needed. Grinning, he nodded. “Alright, we can build a snow creature. Maybe a baby dragon?” He hoped that would cheer Bry up if she felt sad they couldn’t have the snowball fight. While waiting for her answer, Ary began to scoop snow together so that he could begin patting it into shape.

In these blue eyes, Bry always saw a win with Ary. She was by far the luckiest girl and she had no trouble making sure everyone knew and agreed with her. Of course. Leave it to him to be the more mature one of the two .. just as always. The way he looked after her was nothing short or remarkable and she loved him for it. He had nothing to be sorry for, not ever. Bry already forgot all about him shooting down her plans of a snowball fight and was more than happy to do something else that would surely have them freezing out here in the snow in no time at all.
Yesssssss! Magic could certainly be used at any time during their snow creature building. The sixth year brightened considerably, her smile warm and showing real happiness now. "A baby dragon is a fantastic idea!" Maybe they could even animate it with a simple charm to make it roar or something once they were finished. Now that would be epic!
Buuuuuuut first... This greatest baby snow dragon of all time had to be created. Therefore no more time was wasted as she began gathering up the surrounding snow into a pile so it could be added to what Ary had already started.
