Default Library

A maze of thousands upon thousands of books, the library is heaven to any book-lover. Upon entering the high-ceilinged room, the smell of books, both ancient and new, hits you. There are many tall, narrow shelves neatly lined up, each divided into different sections -- charms, potions, Muggles, fiction, and so on. If you find a book you're interested in, simply make use of the sliding ladder or summon the book with Accio to retrieve it.

The library, however, just isn't a labyrinth of books. In the heart of the library and on the outskirts of it are tables and seating areas designated for quiet research and reading, some with accompanying fireplaces or large stained glass windows. Tucked away in the very back of the library is the Restricted Section, which requires a key that the librarian keeps on their person at all times and permission to enter because of the more mature titles and content that are tightly locked and chained within. At the entrance stands the front desk where the school librarian can usually be found, who will happily recommend a book, check out a book for you, and help you with any of your library needs.

OOC: Please do not play for the Librarian: Holmesian Feline.

They had talked about it for a bit now, him and his Paully. Quite frankly, Idris was quite keen on commencing the lengthy path to becoming an Animagus. That was why the fourth year was present in the library, using his tall frame to seek out appropriate books on the topic from a high shelf. It was only when he had collected four that Id made his way to one of the many tables. "I'm here with books,'' the Gryffindor remarked happily. "Got our notebook ready?" After all, they needed to make proper notes for the essays that were to be written.

Paul knew the road ahead would be difficult, but he was used to difficulty. What helped was that he wouldn't be alone doing it. In a way he could motivate his boyfriend and he can be motivated just the same. Well, Idris had already been doing that since they first met at 9 years old. Anyways, they had to keep their grades in Transfiguration up via studying, on top of all the research on Animagus.

"Thanks Id..." Paul said. It was a little easier for him to show appreciation verbally. Especially with him being taller now, a little sore spot, but he thought he did well hiding it... behind the pout on his face. "Here, I got your favorite colour like you asked." Sliding it over with the special quill on the table they secured. "I... also asked Jan for some notes he took the past two years. Think it'll help us too." Pulling out the aged parchment, although it had neat penmanship making it easy to read.

"Wish we could have snacks in here.." But Library had its own rules. Sad case.

Oi! Yet another paper she needed to write. Unlike many others, this one wasn't for any of her classes. Nope, this one.. this was for her training. So much needed to be done in order for her to keep moving in the right direction of her Animagi training. Unlike previous essays she has written on the subject, this one more different. It was much more in depth. Nothing could go left unsaid. This was the make it or break it of all papers. Bryony NEEDED to ensure that the new Transfiguration professor knew that she wasn't messing about and how serious she truly was about this.

So it was with great skill already that Bry made her way up and down the correct aisles looking for each book that she had read numerous times already. Ones on what needed to be spoken each night after she had kept a Mandrake leaf in her mouth for an entire month. Books about how to seal away the leaf safely until an electrical storm. Ones about her first transformation and how to turn back as well.

With a stack of books piled in her arms, the sixth year choose a table away from most others so she wouldn't be disturbed. Setting the books down, Bry took a set and pulled out a bunch of notes from her bag, her self inking quill and lots of parchment.

It was time to get started.

The Hogwarts library, even on a slow afternoon, buzzed with the low ambient hum of pages turning and quills scratching and if Amorentia were for sounds, Iris' certainly would include these. She moved deliberately through the stacks with the focus of someone on a mission ordained by Merlin himself. The Ravenclaw already had three books nestled in her satchel, their combined weight a steady thump against her hip with every step and caused her to limp a little with each stride. Warding the Mind: Psychological Shielding Against Dark Influence, Practical Incantations for the Inattentive Adolescent, Fleshroot, Fireseeds, and the Folklore in Between were just the beginnings of those she sought today, the next one being Mutable Magic: The Ethics and Essentials of Transfiguration that she just knew was somewhere around this section...

It took her a full fifteen minutes of scanning, but her eyes finally landed on it...only it was five shelves higher than eye level, right at the top, and well out of her petit stature's reach. The blonde let out a long slow breath through her nose. "Why is it always the important ones that are practically roosting with the owls?" There was no sign of a sliding ladder nearby and though she could technically summon it with a quick Accio...stubbornness demanded she didn’t take the easy way out. Also, and don't tell anyone this, but she had also completely overlooked the fact that she could summon it in the first place. The curse of hyperfixation.

Iris rolled her shoulders back, shoved her glasses up the bridge of her nose, and stepped onto the bottommost shelf like a mountaineer eyeing a summit. One hand gripped the next level for balance but her boot slipping just slightly against the polished wood and were she heavier it was likely the shelf would have given an unnerving creak. Truly not her finest moment.

She spotted some of her peers nearby, one in particular that she recognized specifically because she had been in the stands for every single Slytherin quidditch match last term and some of the practices, but she kept her personal Everest to herself and instead hissed a frustrated, "Come oooooooooooooooooooon..." she hissed under her breath as her fingers reached toward the spine of the book that remained well out of her reach.

Having been heading back to the library desk after putting some books away, Marcus was meandering through the aisles checking on things. One unfamiliar in working in a library, or spending any great amount of time there, would never truly understand just how messy things could get among the tomes when one wasn’t looking. Some students certainly seemed to be engrossed in their work as he passed the tables on which they resided. However, one girl in particular caught his attention and brought him to a stop from moving further away.

“Here, Ms. Harden, let me help,” he suggested as he approached the girl who clearly struggled for a book above her. The professor easily had about a foot in height over the fellow Ravenclaw so he was glad to assist. “What title were you trying to get?”

His Paully was absolutely correct! They were on this new adventure together! Even if Idris hadn’t any desire to embark on becoming an Animagus, it went without saying that he would have still supported Paul in any way he could. “You’re always welcome, Paully!’’ the Gryffindor said happily as he plopped himself down on the seat beside the Hufflepuff. He resisted the urge to poke Paul in the cheek playfully because of that pout. Especially since there was important work to be done. He did smile brightly as the red notebook slid his way. “You’re appreciated a whole lot!” This was extremely true.

“You did?” Id gave Paul a startled look, picking up the quill in the process. “I know it wouldn’t have been easy given… everything but I’m not surprised that you thought ahead to do so.” He kept his gaze down on his older brother’s notes though he did chuckle softly at the mention of snacks. “Me too. I can do with some Cauldron Cakes right now.” He glanced up to see other students nearby, one of whom included Ary's girlfriend, and the Librarian himself. If he and Paul were caught with snacks here, he doubted Professor Cole would throw them out. They’d most likely receive a stern warning and some House point deductions.

“So, I guess we can start researching the complex nature of being an Animagus, then we can move onto the risks the entire process involves.” Resisting the urge to lean against Paul’s shoulder {he often resisted these sorts of things a lot but he never found it any easier, unfortunately}, he pulled the book at the top of the pile towards him. "What does Jan's notes say?"

Sorry everyone.

Bryony hadn't intentionally been trying to ignore those that were in the library. It was simply that she REALLY wanted to try to focus on writing this paper. There was so much research that she needed to include in her writing. Yes, she has read each and every single book the library has on Animagi, plus all the ones her mum had held onto and many more than she had managed to get her hands on. And what had it all been for? This. This was the paper that would make or break everything now. All that she had learned and knew needed to be proven in what she wrote. There was no way that she could fail.

And yet...

Blue eyes somehow managed to catch a quick glimpse of a younger year climbing on a shelf?! Well now.. if that didn't seem like something she herself would do! Perhaps the girl would like some assistance? Or um.. not? Great looking out Professor Cole! Where he had come from, she didn't know but it was good that he was there. Speaking of which.. maybe she'd speak with him about her training while she was here.. since she'd be visiting him in the greenhouses soon for Mandrake le-

What was this?! Bry found herself swiveling around in her chair towards a table near the one she was sat at. She recognized the one boy as Jan's brother and the other.. must be his friend. This wasn't what had caught her attention though. Oh, no. It was what they were chatting about! "Are you two reading up on Animagi?" The question was out of her mouth before she could even consider that she might be disturbing them. Oops.

Iris was so close...and it really was completely nonsensical in the way she was being this stubborn about not using magic—like she’d be giving up ground to the shelf itself, and she had something to prove. Mainly to the book. And maybe a little bit to herself. And maybe to all the shorter sorts everywhere.

So when Professor Cole’s voice reached her ears, she flinched hard enough to knock her glasses askew. Caught red-handed... well, red-elbowed... in the most awkward stretch imaginable and her feet were still precariously balanced on the bottom shelf, she blinked at him first before then straightening immediately and carefully lowered herself back to the floor. She tugged at her cardigan sleeves to regain some composure before answering, trying not to look too flustered.

"Oh. Um...thank you, professor," she said, folding her hands in front of her. "I was trying to get a copy of Mutable Magic: The Ethics and Essentials of Transfiguration." A beat passed before she added, almost sheepishly, "I already got three of the seven books on my recommended reading list and thought I could manage the rest without assistance. But apparently vertical limitations are still… limitations."

Her tone remained perfectly polite, but her pride had taken the smallest of bruises. Still, she lifted her chin a little, trying to redirect with a thoughtful, academic air.

"Do you know if anyone’s checked it out recently? I'm positive I see it on the shelf up there but if I'm mistaken I could try the returns."

She adjusted her glasses with a sigh, pointedly not looking around the library nor back up at the shelf just in case her attempts had truly been in vain and she needed to have her glasses prescription adjusted. Enough time to hear some floating whisperings about animagus training weave through the air and slide through the thin spaces between books lining the shelves.

Becoming an Animagus sounded incredibly impractical. Dangerous. Regulated. And for what? So someone could dramatically run through the Forbidden Forest at sunset in the shape of a hare? Evade curfew more stylishly? It all seemed like a lot of effort for something that mostly amounted to escapism, vanity, or rebellion—none of which interested her. If she was going to spend months on something exhausting and arcane, it would be solving real-world magical problems or untangling a centuries-old curse...not learning how to grow fur and sprint. Though… she supposed, begrudgingly, that if someone were doing it for a more serious purpose such as survival, protection, or studying magical ecosystems properly.... that would be a different matter entirely.

She glanced down at her list again and to another book that had been rather elusive in her search. "Also Runes and Reckonings: Foundational Numerology in Ancient Spellcraft. It was on the recommended list for cross-referencing Arithmancy and Ancient Runes in predictive models and I didn't come across it while I was searching the Arithmancy or Ancient Runes sections."

If he had noticed her stance or not, he hadn’t readily made it aware. Perhaps he would have said something if the girl hadn’t moved to correct herself after discovering that he, as the librarian and protector of books and bookshelves, was near. The professor found that usually did the trick to keep the students from causing real trouble beyond climbing on shelves…or sneaking snacks into the library. Especially when one was also your head of house. Listening to the third year explain the object of his search, Marcus’ head tilted slightly to the side as if in thought or searching his memory on the title in question.

“I do not believe it has been a recent borrow…” he mused truthfully before moving to take her place in front of bookshelves. He did try his best to keep an accurate account of his literary charges. His dark gaze looked up where Ms. Iris had been looking as she had previously reached for the higher shelves. The herbology professor scanned the various spines from left to right before finally alighting on their quarry. “And your vision is indeed correct,” he remarked as he reached up to the appropriate shelf, his long, thin fingers wrapping around the book to pull it down. Holding out the tome for her to take once he had turned back to her.

As for Runes and Reckoning…Marcus was again searching his memory. Even having been in charge of the library for a couple of years, it took a bit to register where everything was located. Especially tomes that stretched over multiple topics of learning. “Hmmm…haven’t seen it lately…” he mused which meant it likely hadn’t been checked out. “So, let’s have another look,” he offered as he moved to lead the third year down the aisle and around the corner in the direction either of the other subjects could be found. Could be a matter of being replaced somewhere wrong or just on one of the tables.

Iris accepted the book with both hands, careful not to let her fingers brush against his as she did. "Thank you," she said softly, already thumbing the worn edges affectionately. She didn’t comment on the correctness of her vision, but the confirmation that she did not need to up her prescription was encouraging and something about the moment left her feeling a little more grounded than she had when she’d first approached and attempted to scale the shelf.

"Okay," she nodded, following the professor as he turned to continue the search as her satchelm even heavier now thanks to the addition of the tome, shifting against her hip with each step. "It’s entirely possible I dreamed it onto the wrong shelf," she admitted, more to herself than to him. Her eyes scanned the corners of nearby tables as they walked, just in case. "But it should be somewhere near Arithmancy or Theory, I think, if it's filed like it was last year. As a duology."

Dreaming it onto another shelf. If Professor Cole had thought anything odd about the girl’s statement, there was no visible reaction. But the man certainly appeared bemused at her comments on the possible location and details of the book they were looking for. They had reached roughly the location in question and the librarian paused in his movements, debating since it wasn’t where he himself had believed the duology to be. But he gave in to Ms. Harden’s suggestion, his dark gaze brushing over the various shelves in search for the title they were looking for. And there it was, albeit not exactly in the right place and away from its partner.

“I’m impressed…” Marcus moved as he grabbed for it off the shelf to hand to her. “Is it simply this book or pair of books you seem to have quite a grasp of location, or have you figured out more of the library?” If she was good at keeping track and organizing the library’s many tomes, perhaps Marcus could have her as a volunteer to assist him. He could always use another set of eyes and hands, especially around exam times.
