 For those who belong in Hufflepuff House, in the middle of the Great Hall is where your table awaits. Gold banners containing an embroidered black badger float above the polished table in honour of the loyal Helga Hufflepuff. Already placed on the tables are silver plates with accompanying cutlery and goblets. All that is missing right now are the mountains of food and pitchers containing your favourite beverages.
Though your stomach might be growing as you take a seat on one of the long benches next to the table, it is important to not get hangry -- gnawing your arm away or jabbing your fork repeatedly on the surface of the table will do no good whatsoever. Give everyone some time to get settled in and wait for Headmaster Kazmi to deliver his speech. Keep yourself preoccupied by catching up with your fellow housemates until it is time to sink your teeth into the hearty and delicious meal prepared by the house-elves.

One of the current seventh years he would miss the most? Jordyn. She and Jude had gotten along instantly at their initial meeting and they had continued to throughout the years. “Hi, my Hufflepuff person!’’ He paused a beat. “All set for your seventh year then?”
Remember that seminar taught by Jericho Vertagren two terms ago? The guy had taught them how to defend themselves while deflecting the incoming spells. Professor Madigan had taught them how to deflect objects last term. Jude put those skills to use. Since he was no beginner when it came to the Shield Charm, he need not reverse his wand movements; he focused it in his intent. “Protego!’’ he called out, the exact moment others around him threw up spells as well. Hopefully his would at least block AND deflect those balloons. His Charm had been mainly directed to the snake and to as many Puffs as possible.
Kayla hadn’t been saved and… YUCK! The stench! Leave it to Peeves to fill those balloons with disgusting water. Neither had Maria apparently. “Um… Maria? Is your snake friend okay? Not soaked with that water, is he? Or she?”
All the chaos seemingly winding down due to the departure of Peeves, Jude looked around to see his favourite professor standing at the Hufflepuff table. He knew he had heard the man’s voice as one that had tried to stop Peeves. “Professor, hi!” He made a mental note to tell Holden later that he had gotten an O or History of Magic OWL. This thought was quickly driven from his mind when he noticed the badger tie pin. “Are you our new Head of House, professor?” the sixth year asked, excitement written all over his face. Obviously the badgers needed a new Head with Euka gone. |

Hearing a familiar voice, Jordyn turned and was happy to see one of her favorite housemates. “Hey Jude”. That never got old, at least not for Jordyn. ”How’s it going? Did you have a good summer?” As for her thoughts on year seven, well that was complicated. “I guess I’m as ready as I can be.”. Actually, that remained to be seen.

Simon was grateful for some small favours when Peeves decided to leave. Now he could focus on his Hufflepuffs! But GAH- the stench of swamp water was coming from the table. He focused on the raspberry that Peeves blew and then was promptly covered in swamp water from the balloon that Peeves had dropped.
Welp.
He stood there. And then nodded. “Alright then,” he said to no one in particular as he pulled out his wand and began to dry off the excess water. He’d deal with the smell later. This was decidedly much worse than his first word (G’Day) uttered at the Start of Term feast as a brand new Professor here.
At least someone was excited to see him. He flashed Jude a happy smile and nod. “Yes, I am! I’m looking forward to being your Head of House this term. My office is always available. And don’t worry, history isn’t the only topic that we have to talk about.” He then pointed to his robes and cast a non-verbal Scourgify.
What a start to the feast.
He turned his attention back to his Puffs noticing that Kayla and Maria had both been hit with the swamp water filled balloons. Maria’s tears really were upsetting to see. He did raise his eyebrows when she mentioned the snake. Why would someone leave someone else a gift of a snake? He frowned. He knew words probably provided little comfort especially since he knew her father had been one that had been mer-napped. The outside world had wonderful ways of intervening into their little school (which was already dangerous enough). “I can take care of the Snake and I can clean up your robes too. And Miss Cloud’s.” A quick Scourgify should do the trick for the robes. As for the snake…
How funny that his house’s mascot should come pay him a visit. He was not fond of Divination but perhaps he’d have to ask his sister if there was an unintended meaning of this meeting. “Apologies,” he said to the Snake. Ironic. “Vipera Evanesca” he spoke, casting the spell on the red-eyed Snake.
Black smoke took the place of the snake.
“Right. Robes next?”

It was all fun and happy summer conversations. Yukie was more than glad to answer Keighley's question about Japan. "Absolutely lovely! If you are big on culture, you will love it there. Depending on what month you visit too, you'll get to see the sakura flowers in bloom." Something about cherry blossoms in Japan was magical, and just so much prettier. Perhaps that was Yukie's bias to her mum's birthplace playing a role here, but genuinely it was such a beautiful sight to behold.
All fun until Peeves happened, of course. Yukie was just about to tell Keighley not to entertain Peeves, when the poltergeist went ahead and TOSSED water balloons at everyone. The third year let out a SCREAM and quickly slipped down the house table, hiding for dear life. No way was she getting soaked on the first night!! Especially with that SMELL. She could just smell the swamp water even from down here. Though tiny splatters did reach her, Yukie had made sure to keep moving down the little 'pathway' under the table, until she heard someone cast an Immobulus charm.
She waited things to sound like they were all settled down outside, but when Yukie peeked, she saw Professor Holden right as Peeves dropped a water balloon over him. She gaped.
But at least Peeves was gone and that assured her enough, so that was only when Yukie crawled out of the table, now crouching close to Professor Holden. She wiped her hands on her robes there. "Hi, Professor, can I get a spell or two as well?" Yukie was feeling a bit gross after all that. "Congratulations on the new title too, Head of House!" Even after all the mess that happened, Yukie managed a bright smile for Professor Holden and even bat her lashes.

First, it was the snake with the red eyes. Henry looked at Jude, fully understanding his desire to keep the situation hushed, but the seventh year was more concerned of the possibility of the snake slithering its way out the basket. For now, it looked contained but Henry was no mindreader nor was he a Parselmouth so there was no assurance the snake would stay put. And he didn't want to blame Maria either, the poor young Puff. Although, to be fair, Henry would've just left that snakey basket in the train if he were in his shoes. Ah well.
Second, it was Peeves deciding they haven't had enough water balloon fights during the summer. But with a twist of swamp water in this one. Henry was ready to throw hands. This is not how his last first night back should be!! He was ready to suggest tossing the snake at Peeves, but that was stupid. (Henry has made stupider suggestions, so it wasn't even that bad.)
Henry had already left the table when Peeves tossed the first balloon at poor Keighley. TO THE GRYFFINDOR TABLE, WHERE HE WILL BE WITH HIS BESTIE!! FREE FROM THIS SWAMPY AND SNAKEY BUSINESS!! Sorry, Professor Holden. That was a nice new head of house pin, by the way.

Keighley had gotten used to the gentle teasing from her siblings over the summer. And yet she still couldn't keep herself from blushing. "I know that we do but I also need to really see where things are with Charlie and make sure he understands everything too." Right now, it was all just a bit complicated still. Nothing that she couldn't work through.. she was just a bit nervous about doing so. "And I'm happy that you're happy, Jude." She smiled at him, lightly nudging him with her elbow one again.
Hearing Yukie talk about Japan had Keighley smiling brightly. "The culture, the food, the people. Everything. It's all the reasons that I would love to go there someday. Maybe one day when we don't have so many assignments you can tell me more about it? She would love to hear everything there is to hear about Japan!
The blonde nodded her head. Professor Paton would know exactly what to do and everything would be perfectly fine. When Maria said that she would like that hug, Keigh didn't hesitate in opening her arms wide and wrapping them tightly around the younger girl. She was a hugger and never ever turned one down. The question may have been directed at her brother but she didn't think he would mind her answering for him. "Um, typically you would need permission to bring a snake and it would stay in the barns but this was anonymously gifted to you on the train. So no, I highly doubt that you will be in any trouble at all."
Oh, dear Merlin! Keigh knew she had said the wrong thing the second the words were out of her mouth. Why would she even ask that?! What was she thinking?! She had barely let go of Maria before Peeves was tossing water balloons filled with gross stinky swamp water at them all. One breaking on the table directly in front of her and splattering everywhere. "Blech!" It was on her robes and in her hair and on her face! Wrinkles her nose up in disgust.
"I'm sorry everyone.." She hadn't meant to cause Peeves to throw those balloons at them. Thankfully Professor Holden arrived at their table and handled the situation, cleaning things up and vanishing the snake too?! Whoa! Poor little thing. Her eyes shifted to the staff dais to see that Professor Paton wasn't coming down, there really wasn't any need for her to know anyhow. And the speech was starting anyhow.. she smiled up at her cousin and waved again. She would make a point to go visit her as soon as she could.
