Leave your textbooks back in your dorm, you will not be needing those today. In fact, the only instructions you receive are that you must bring your wand and adorn yourself in comfortable clothing that will allow you plenty of movement. If that were not already an indication that your Defense Against the Dark Arts seminar had the potential to be a grueling one, perhaps the fact that it was being held in the Dueling Arena would complete that visual.
As you enter you will see that the raised stage, where formal duels took place, has been tucked neatly against the wall and a section of the dueling arena squared off with woven straw mats laid side by side to create a cushioned floor. A sign hovers and spins around, like a petal or a leaf blown about by a breeze, for its own amusement and ensures that you read its very important message for today’s training: ‘Please remove your shoes before ascending to the mat.’ It would be for the best that you not tempt fate and ignore the request.
Already standing upon these mats is your mentor for the day, professional duellist and Hufflepuff alumnus Jericho Vertagren. His palms are pressed gently against one another, slowly making circles, as his brilliant blue eyes meet yours as you approach and offers you a welcoming smile while the pair of Eurasian Eagle-Owl eyes tattooed on his arm follow your movements and may even blink if you look carefully. Jericho stands straddling a thick red ribbon that seems to flow out from the floating blackboard behind him divides the mat area into two. Upon the board reads the following:
SPOILER!!: the board (text version)
Please stand on the side of the line associated with the phrase that resonates with you most
"Winning is .......................... "The best
more related .............................. defense
to good ................................... is a
defense ............................. good offense."
than offense." .......................................
“Do not dwell on your choice and forget to act,” Jericho encourages you while his toes alternate between flexing upwards and pressing down against the straw mats. “One…or the other…trust your gut…”
❧ SEMINAR PROGRESSSION
Arrival : taking off shoes, ascending the mat, resonating with a phrase [this post]
A Query: care to explain your choice? What about sharing what you know about offensive and defensive magic?
A Movement: clarification of intent and reassurance of no harm (THIS ROOM IS FULL OF STRESSED AURAS!), allusions to combination spellcasting, partner up and magically tickle one another
Another Movement: follow up to the discussion, checking in, Protego, and how to cast to reflect
OOC: Hello, hello, HELLO and welcome to your first Defense Against the Dark Arts seminar of the term which will focus on dueling technique and looking inwards at your own (your character's, that is) individual style and approach to dueling. A notice would have been posted prior to come to class dressed in clothing that 'allows for ease of moment' such as athletic wear.
So come on in! We've so happy to have you here
Just as with regular lessons, if you have two characters, you may only play one of them in the seminar.
Points will be awarded for participation; these will be calculated and delivered by a member of staff.
Remember: the DADA position is staffed by an NPC (Prof. Kelly Peabody) this term. Your characters have been having their regular DADA lessons with her. Attendance at the seminars has been strongly advised.
This seminar will officially begin in approximately 24 hours from the time of this post.

Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, he heard it. Mercer gave Milo's hand a squeeze and his eyes went extra round. Hufflepuff. Up to something. Very suspicious. Mercer tripped along to wherever it was that Milo wanted him to stand, and he didn't even question the fact that he was offering limited cover to Milo. Blocking the professor's view of him... sort of.
"We... I... picked..." Hmm, there were too many questions. "My name is Hawk Birdman, and I am a first year." He didn't have to give his real name, but he definitely didn't see the harm in trying to answer the other questions. "I picked this phrase because I am super cautious and want to watch... my... enemies? make mistakes." Sure. Seemed right.
"Offensive magic is magic that offends you and defensive magic is magic that builds short walls between you and other people. I think an example of offensive magic is... maybe a spell that throws boogers at people? And defensive magic is... oh, can you SUMMON a fence? Yeah, a spell that summons a fence."
Evan was a bit ashamed to have forgotten his manners and not have greeted the host when he'd come in and found his spot. He'd gotten lost in his thoughts for a moment, and it had just got pushed to the back of his mind until he'd been distracted by watching the other students, a few unable to choose one side or the other. If they were dueling and that hung up on it, could always just even at the numbers. But anyways, at the greeting, he flushed a little and nodded back at the man. "Sorry, sir. Hello to you as well." And with that out of the way, he started on the wrist exercises that they had been instructed to do while the rest of the class filed in.
He glanced over at Daniel, giving a small nod at the boy in hello as well, unsure if he had remembered to do so there, before once again surveying the class. For most students, he honestly wasn't surprised to see where they landed, but he would have been interested to hear the answers from their own mouths regardless. He hoped some would be willing to share that information. Though... perhaps that was hypocritical, because as soon as that question was posed he found he was entirely unwilling to be one of the ones to do so.
But the other questions. He could do those. Evan listened to the other answers around him, something brewing in the back of his mind that only grew louder after Desiree's answer. So he raised his hand, and waited to be called on, before offering a response. "Evan Nam, Fifth year Ravenclaw. I agree with what Desiree was saying. I think that the true distinctive difference between offensive and defensive magic - is intent. Who attacked first? Is a spell being fired to hurt someone, or are you doing it out of protection? And I think any spell, whether classified as defensive or offensive can be used for the purpose of the opposite of it's classification. Take expelliarmus for example. It's a defensive charm, but if you use it first with the intent of leaving your opponent without any ability to defend themselves so that you can continue an attack... doesn't that make it still an offensive move?"
Did that also give insight to his peers of why he stood where he stood?

Let them point and laugh at who we are, it's you and me here dancing from the start
Jericho. What an interesting name. Val preferred it to Mr. Vertagren, to be honest. She watched him curiously as he spoke, aware that this seminar was going to be super interesting. She paused, looking thoughtfully at the board as her classmates responded.
"Defensive magic is magic that helps deflect spells that are cast your way." She finally raised her hand to answer, somewhat hesitantly. "Like Violet mentioned, it's better to wait and find out your opponent's strategy before opting for offensive magic." .. which is kind of why she preferred the first option. A good defense is always necessary. "Oh and I'm Valentina Nichols, by the way."
Dawn grinned also in amusement when the instructor repeated what she had first said before her greeting. Ehehe, yeah, nice indeed. But never mind, moving on. He was polite, Dawn appreciated that.
Right-o, wrist loosening it was. The Slytherin stared off by copying the moves the man was doing and moved on to some of her own afterwards to get those muscles, ligaments, joints and everythang movin'. She was eagerrrrrr to start, but knew better not to skip over the warm up.
She listened intently to what he was saying as he introduced himself and she couldn't help but smile at the 'life coach' bit. Yep, definitely a hippie, that one. Amusing!
She did let out a chuckle at his hair comment and took a mental note that she officially liked this guy. He was a good one. Funny, good looking, obviously knew his stuff as he was a professional duellist. Yep, he was a gooooood one. Very, very nice.
Dawn was more than happy to copy his breathing and movement because one: he knew what he was doing, as she had mentally pointed out before, and two: those were always useful and she knew it. Breathing deeply always made her feel GREAT and she loved feeling great. It was a great feeling.
This Slytherin was more than happy to raise her hand to share her thinking on deciding what side to take. "Hi, I'm Dawn Rastrick. I chose this side for a few reasons. One: you can't actually win if you are just defending yourself. I mean, if your opponent hasn't got much endurance, maybe you can, but I would never assume that to start with. I always assume my opponent has, at least, the same endurance as me, or more. So yeah, relying solely on defense to win is not a good strategy. We all would know this by now given the happenings of a few terms ago..." She added almost as a side comment, letting her voice trail off as she looked around at her peers. But maybe some of them would need clarification on that. "I hope I'm not, y'know, triggering anything, but just defending ourselves did not stop the Neo Alliance from taking over. It was only when our parents and the good people left in the Ministry finally attacked that it came to a - good - ending." Anyway. "Two: A good defense is exactly that, a good defense, not really offence. Yeah, yeah, that might not make a lot of sense since I chose this side, but really, if you're using an offensive spell, you're still open to getting attacked too, which isn't exactly a defense." Yeah? That made sense in her head. "However, as I mentioned before, I still think this would be a better strategy if the whole point was to win." And with thaaat, she was done with that part of her answer.
She felt like she was talking a loooot, but hey, he asked their opinion. "Defensive magic is something that'd protect you or someone else. Like the Shield Charm. Offensive magic is one that can cause some kind of damage, even if just to the person's attention. Like... the Dancing Feet spell. Offensive magic doesn't necessarily need to hurt the other person, just make them unable to attack you." And... that could maybe be then considered a kind of defense, then. Hm... but only if it worked. Dawn would always come from the perspective that it might not, juuuust in case. So yeah, she'd class that as an offensive spell.

Comfortable clothing? Say less. Kinsay James always took heed of opportunities to swap out her uniform. The Hogwarts robes were truly a tragedy. She did her best with what she could, but there was no saving them. Only two and a half more years of sanctioned torture. But who’s counting? Kinsay James. That’s who.
So it was in high spirits that she made her way to class, her smile only faltering when her gaze fell upon the raised stage. But not wanting to draw any attention to herself, she silently moved towards the side favoring defense and waited as class began. Were all seminars going to be led by this Jericho character? Because Kinsay wouldn’t mind if they were. His tattoos were nice to look at, as was his hair.
But his questions. So many questions.
………. There was some irony here, wasn’t there? Hm.
Kinsay wasn’t planning on answering any of them, simply because she didn’t feel like it, but when Daniel returned the question to their seminar instructor, it got Kinsay to thinking. And so she, regrettably, raised her hand, ”Kinsay James — Why does it have to be one or the other? Why not both?” She raised her thick brows as she asked her question. She wasn't meaning to be argumentative, her questions were genuine ones. ”I think it's irresponsible to go with the same strategy all the time.” But that was just Kinsay's unprofessional opinion. Sometimes these things were circumstantial, weren’t they? This felt like a trick.
Also.
What was Mercer doing giving himself ridiculous names? It took every ounce of restraint not to laugh, and even then, Kinsay was doing a poor job hiding her amusement.
Also, also. Kins chose to zone out the entire time Dawn spoke. It was her fault for giving such a lengthy answer. So.

But thank you, anyway, Sir!”
Aria took that back: this side of the line was NOT a Slytherin thing because she watched Dawn go off to the other side. But there were others joining this little group: “Hiii, Violet!’’ Aria smiled enthusiastically at the older girl even though they usually had some sort of tension between them. Why was she NOT surprised at Fox and Apollo? The Slytherin sent Apollo a bright smile just for the fun of it. Was she keen on seeing how their instructor took the two students’ choices? Yes, she was. And wasn’t this interesting? A little Hufflepuff {Desiree} joined them. Aria waved elegantly back in greeting, much like a proper model would.
Mmm. Professional duellist. This young Slytherin was impressed; and she almost drooled at the sight of his hair going gold. Indeed her face had gone slightly slack as she admired those delicious strands. Almost robotically she followed his lead but to say the least, her actions were not as graceful as his given her current stage of… INFATUATION.
Merlin!
Sir Jericho was asking a lot, wasn’t he? Um, what were the questions again? Aria attempted to pull herself together, her eyes flicking from the man in front to a few other students. Could they go ahead and start answering so that she could at least get some sense of direction about the questions?
Because...
This man was a DISTRACTION to her.
Was she…perfectly all right?
Jericho did not allow his gaze to linger too long on her, in case she was the shy sort that simply did not like speaking in class or in front of others, but did do so long enough that their eyes did in fact lock and he could offer a warm, encouraging, smile. One that did enough to scrunch his nose a bit and make his freckles seem to dance under the light dripping in through the window and on to his face.
Perhaps…one to keep an eye on. Especially if she were truly feeling unwell.

Darius didn't have to wait long staring at the Instructor before some other mates like Bella and Desiree joined him. They got acknowledgements from him, "Hey Aria," He greeted back. "Hey Violet,".. "He's quite striking, isn't he?" Just look at the hair and tattoos. He was supposed to be doing some sort of wrist movements by now wasn't he? Gossiping with the girls had him miss that, whoops.
Jericho Vertagren... Darius repeated in his head. Soo he could him by first or last name. He finally went ahead with stretching his fingers and wrists while pondering on the questions. Breathing in and out before it was his turn to respond, "Darius Potter here, er.... defensive magic includes spells like Protego where it serves to repel magic directed at you." Oh and why he chose this side. "Sure, being on the offense sounds like the better advantage, you can shoot spells all day but that doesn't mean those spells will hit or make their mark if they thought ahead of you. A barrier could already be in place." He left it at that for now.
His attention shifting to the strapping young man, Jericho switched back from his wrists to rolling his shoulders and really making sure to get the stretch all the way to his shoulder blades. His pleasant smile still in place, the duellist nodded his head as the boy spoke. “Thank you, Darius, and an excellent example and the spell one does most intimately associated with defensive magic,” he praised while casting a snap towards the blackboard which then promptly spun to reveal the otherside that was void of any writing. For now, at least. With another snap of his fingers, the chalk levitated and began to write as he dictated. It was not exactly impressive wandless magic, or really wandless magic at all. Each piece had been enchanted to behave in accordance with certain sound cues of Jericho’s. “So you would consider yourself to be more of a cautious duellist then, Darius? More the sort to let your opponent reveal their cards to you than seek to reveal them yourself?”
It was not a judgemental question, that was not why Jericho was here today, but one rooted in genuine curiosity.

She then waved to Desiree and watched Apollo take a stand in the middle of the mat with one leg on each side of the line. Was Apollo making a statement? Curious.
Professor seminars eagle owl tattoo was very eye-catching, but Bella manged to pull her focus on to the man's face as the seminar began. Raising her hand after contemplating what to say the black haired snakette said meeting Professor Jericho's eyes. "I'm Bella of Slytherin. I picked the phrase i did because you can't win if you don't defend yourself well so you can attack when your opponent least expects it. An offensive spell example is Stupefy and an example of defensive magic spells is Expecto Patronum."
“Bella, thank you,” he likewise responded to the young woman as he continued with a couple more shoulder rolls while walking along the red line that divided the class. “Both spells are other excellent examples for each umbrella of spellcasting, though I would like to touch a bit more upon the Patronus Charm in a bit.” Assuming he remembered to circle back to it. Though, he hoped, that in informing the girl he would very much like that she would give him a nudge should he forget. As was with Darius, Bella began her explanation about why she had picked the side she had using the word ‘you’ rather than ‘I’. Which was very curious indeed. “What do you feel your choice says about yourself as a duellist?” he implored as an extension, just as he had done with the boy before her.

On his guard, he kept his own flimsy defences shored up as best he could, and didn't say anything to the seminar leader until he'd moved on several times over.
"I've already decided," he said then, back to his usual vague and almost incidental manner of speaking, and mostly for his friend's benefit. "To adapt." And, taking Mercer by the hand, he tugged him towards the side which was lousy with Slytherins, the side which prioritised defence.
And then the disclosure. Hufflepuff... of course. Milo decided at once to re-seek Mercer, to grab his hand a second time only not let go - regardless of this arm-waving and hand-stretching business - and perhaps to also take advantage of his untapped potential as a human shield, though there were other, much taller, sturdier, and better-versed-in-magic students on this side of the line who would serve. By his outward appearance he was as unfazed as ever, but for the excessive and interminable blinking, now up an extra gear.
Milo didn't give up his name, nor any kind of answer, though a whole slew of curses of every conceivable nature had been stored up in his brain over the last few years, ripe for the collecting and presenting. They were fascinating, and he'd long enjoyed learning about them. But this? He did not like this. Exactly what it was he didn't like, he also didn't know, couldn't pinpoint, and for that reason he liked it even less.
The gray haze that surrounded this youth was as curious as it was unsettling, as translucent as it was impenetrable. A quiet lad with deep eyes that truly must have seen things, Jericho was left bewildered for now and simply nodded at the certainty of the response that followed. He seemed to have been waiting for his friend, as he assumed given the hand holding and leading that came next. He could not say that he was surprised, given his first impression and initial read of the youth, of the side he led his friend to. It did beg the question, however, of whether or not his friend truly felt the same or was perhaps simply acting as a shadow.

Ah. Yes. There it was. We. Though the words the flowed so effortlessly from the boy next did not give off the implications of being a shadow to his friend. Quite the opposite, truly, and his heart warmed as he pivoted around to smile just a little wider to the boy. “Outstanding, Hawk.” He beamed, none the wiser to the fact that that was not truly the youth’s name. To Jericho, it simply gave off the implications that he was the son of magizoologists who specialized in ornithology. Or, perhaps, were simply bird enthusiasts. “Thank you for being vulnerable with us.”
Part two of the boy’s response elicited a chuckle and soon Jericho’s hands were clasped behind his back for a bit more of a stretch, particularly in his chest which also cause his shirt to shift a bit and the bear tattoo across one of his pectorals peeked out ever so slightly. “A curious way to put it, but using your examples it is a befitting response. Particularly when your opponent has a short temper and simply cannot stand being struck by any spell.” He was trying to give the boy a bit of the benefit of the doubt. “The Summoning Charm could be used defensively to create a wall as you mentioned, yes.”
It could also be used offensively, but they would touch on all those mechanics soon enough.

She moved to the defense side, but physically stood closer to the line than some of the others.
She resisted the urge to pull out her markers. Also she resisted the urge to complain. "I'm Ash, I guess... Defense doesn't mean you can't attack. I think it means that you wait for others to attack instead of striking preemptively or unprovoked, and that you only fight as long as you need to protect your stuff. I don't know. And offense can involve shields too." She thought about it. Hm, maybe he was asking for something else, like what is a defensive spell, but Ash thought that most spells could be used for anything. "I guess an example of defensive magic would be knowing how to cast a good shield so that you can sort out all your options instead of dying when someone strikes at you." Those 'options' didn't have to be magic, necessarily. "I would say that incendio is a truly offensive spell." Nobody defensively set people on fire. Fire hurt.
Speaking of... Ash was very happy about the quality of magical healing. Especially as she did her wrist and hand stretches... the amount of accidental damage to her hands over the years would have restricted her mobility, especially the burns. But her hands felt quite... articulate? Articulated???? Flexible?????? Whatever. The point was, she could move them. Healing magic was the actual best kind of magic for fighting.
Jericho internally frowned, perplexed and concerned at her response and a fire, anger, that felt unwarranted in the moment. The flakes around her even darkened a bit, and he maintained his steady and serene disposition despite the protective hostility she seemed to be presenting. Whatever it was eliciting such a response from her, he was certain (or fairly certain) had little to do with himself and everything to do with each step she had taken before standing before him. “It is in the context of this exercise,” he pointed out gently.
And if he needed any first confirmation of his initial readings, her response certainly solidified matters.
“Thank you, Ash,” he nodded while coming to a stop along the red line to begin working his ankles a bit. Rolling one clockwise for a bit and then counterclockwise. “Would you then say that, for yourself, you see yourself as more the sort to not attack first then? Wait out your opponent?” He did appreciate the implications of no excessive force, though he kept that to himself for now. Another discussion for another time and another place, perhaps, when duellish etiquette was the topic for discussion. “An excellent echo to the words of your peer, Darius,” he nodded with a small gesture towards the older boy. “Incendio is another fine example of the sort of spell typically associated with offensive magic.” And another snap towards the board to enable the chalk to continue.

She winced slightly at Bella's comment, though--no, it would not be fun duelling; Violet never felt very comfortable with that, everything was so unpredictable.
Violet had been a little taken aback to Professor Vetigren's reaction to her greeting--usually it was better to err on the side of caution and address a person by the highest title you thought they might possess--if you were wrong, they would at least be a little flattered. But this man--she did not think she could manage to call him 'Jericho'--seemed to resent it, or at least he was made uncomfortable. So--starting off on the wrong foot; oh well.
But now, on to questions--Violet wanted to make sure to give some answers here, hoping to make up for what she was sure would be her weaknesses when they got around to actual duelling.
"Violet Blackthorne, si.....um...I picked the left side because I think sometimes it's better to wait and let your opponent make the first move and trust your ability to defend against it, to gauge their strength and get an idea of their tactics, before you go rushing in on the offense. An offensive spell would be Incarcerous, which would bind and therefore incapacitate your opponent, and a defensive spell would be Expelliarmus, which disarms your opponent entirely."
She, truly, had little to fret about and the only foot she was starting off on was her own and that was all that he could ask. That was to say, of course, were he to be privy to her thoughts (which he was not) but there was a certain unrefined and feathered appearance to her glow that did signal to him some discomfort or disappointment on her part. Something he hoped would even out and disappear as things progressed.
“Thank you, Violet,” he nodded while unclasping his hands and swaying them a bit in front of himself to loosen up his joints a bit. “[b]Do you trust your own ability to defend in that case?” As with all his follow ups, none were meant to belittle or otherwise make these Hogwarts students doubt their responses. At least not doubt them in the capacity that they were ‘wrong’. As he had told Hawk and his friend, there was no wrong answer as to which side of the line you stood on.

Although he did not express his displeasure, he did notice that his emotions began to relax when Evan joined him. The Hufflepuff student gave the older student a sidelong glance. If he had to be honest, he had thought that Evan would choose to stand on the opposite side of the ribbon. This was interesting. Still, he was relieved that he wasn't the only one on the offense team now that Evan, Emma and Lydia had joined him.
Daniel put his hands back in his back pockets as the instructor began the lesson. He wasn't interested in who the man was at first but when he revealed that he was a professional duellist with world titles under his belt as well as being a HUFFLEPUFF, he looked at him with a more intrigued expression on his face. But then he rolled his eyes when the man proudly displayed his 'beautiful' hair. Pffft, he didn't believe his hair was like that because he was 'born with it'. He bet the man used a Madam Primpernelle's product in his hair.
"Which side do you choose, Mr Vertagren?" he questioned instead of answering any of the questions himself. He pulled his hands out of his pockets and began to circle his wrist a little as he gazed at the man. Anyway, could they start duelling now?! He wanted to demonstrate why his side was superior!
If only this young mind would voice such sentiments! Jericho, judging by the response and general disposition of those gathered here, was beginning to think (realize) that he had done the question a disservice and had not properly conveyed the intention to the class.Though, as it turned out for this young man too, it seemed as though the concern with being ‘right’ had outweighed the desire for self reflection. Something he would need to address in a bit, it would seem.
Unaware that this boy too had the desire to be right (and make everyone else look wrong), he simply chuckled and shook his head. “I will reveal my nature at the conclusion of today’s seminar, I promise,” he spoke with a quick wink. “And, may I have your name?”

The second one had a very princessy wave, did she know? Oh, well. She’d have to tell her later. Mr. Prince Adam Vertagren was speaking!
Desiree listened with rapt attention, hanging on to every word. Ooh, he was a Hufflepuff like her? And he fostered creatures? Asdfjkl!!! So cool!!! But not as cool as that hair flip! Okay, now she was 100% convinced this guy was a Disney prince in disguise, and nobody could tell her different! Maybe he’d been cursed to forget that he was a prince or something?
All too eager to please, she took a deep breath and did a few graceful wrist and finger stretches as she listened to the questions, lots and lots of questions! Ooh, she was willing to share her reasons! Her hand shot up. “I’m Desiree Marchand,” she said when called on, giving her most princessy curtsey. “I picked the left because a good offense sounds good in theory, but what if your offense doesn’t work as planned? Shouldn’t we have a good defense to fall back on, just in case?”
The other questions required a bit more thought. She didn’t know as many spells as the older students, and the first defensive spell that came to mind (Protego) had already been said. “Would Impedimenta be an example of a defensive spell?” she said uncertainly. Suddenly a thought occurred to her, and she added, “Come to think of it, couldn't almost any spell be used defensively if you think creatively enough?” Did that make any sense? She hoped it did! The last thing she wanted was to make a fool of herself in front of Prince Jericho!
It may disappoint her to learn that he knew not what Disney was. Alas.
Nodding gingerly to her response, he, just as he had done with the others, proposed a certain set of follow up queries. “Thank you, Desiree. Would that then mean that you have more confidence in your defensive abilities than your offensive ones? Or is it more that you find settling into a defensive stance more comfortable than being on the offense?”
Simple food for thought and gently pressing for students to understand themselves and their inner nature.
“Impedimenta is usually classified as a defensive spell,” he nodded in agreement before his lips curled into a playful sort of Chesire Cat-like smile. “A point…I would like you to hold on to for just a bit longer, if you please. I would like to circle back to that,” he added with a wink before resuming his slow pacing along the red ribbon upon the woven mats.

She took a deep, centering breath, then thought over the question as he eyes flitted back to the words on the board. The fifth year raised her hand, then hesitated as the Slytherin girl was called on before her and gave the answer she had prepared in her mind. But she could elaborate on that too maybe.
"If you use a shield strategically," she began, noting that the shield charm was a defensive spell. "It can also be used to deflect your opponent's offensive spell back at them." Two birds with one stone, in a sense.
The Chesire Cat-like smile from Desiree’s answer only widened further, moving away from a little playful smirk to a full toothy smile to show off his pearly white teeth. Which, for the record, were less natural than his luxurious locks. At first, he simply tapped his nose - right on the top of it - and also gave her a little wink.
Words of affirmation were necessary, but first he would like some information.
“Perfect. And, may I have your name, please?”

"Like Violet mentioned, it's better to wait and find out your opponent's strategy before opting for offensive magic." .. which is kind of why she preferred the first option. A good defense is always necessary. "Oh and I'm Valentina Nichols, by the way."
“Thank you, Valentina,” he nodded while coming to another pause along the red ribbon and performing a bit of a lunge stretch. “Would you then conclude, Valentina, that you feel yourself to be more of a strategist?”
Thus far, only Hawk had shared the most honest and reflective answer to that query. At least in Jericho’s eyes and in how he had intended the question to be taken. Something he had not conveyed well to the students, he felt.

Ah, here was perhaps where he realized the folly of his outline. In selecting a quote that had the term ‘winning’ in it, it created this subconscious fight or flight instinct within the impressionable minds surrounding him. Winning was right, losing was wrong. It was a truly rookie mistake and a bit uncharastic for someone in his professional field, life coaching that is. He had clearly been more nervous than he had initially thought when preparing for this seminar. Something for him to meditate upon later seeing as public speaking was not something he every shied away from.
And then her answer turned tragic and it was almost as if a dark mist overtook the space. It certainly explained a few of the hazes that surrounded the older students. The ones who had been old enough to attend Hogwarts during the war - there was a certain visual divide between the two groups, after all.
“Dawn, thank you for sharing,” he smile. That was particularly pointed towards the vulnerability displayed for reflecting back on the war itself. A difficult time for all of them to process and move on from. “Would you then say that you feel yourself to be an aggressive person?” That was only somewhat rhetorical. “And an excellent distinction regarding offensive magic. Something I would like for us to discuss a bit later in conjunction with some other points raised by your peers.”

No need to be ashamed, nor was he alone in absence of a greeting. Jericho simply desired to make sure the boy’s attendance had been noticed and was appreciated.
“Ah, yes. Intent,” he reiterated with a little flourish of his right hand, swirling it at the wrist. “An excellent echo and elaboration, Evan. As may of your peers have already touched upon, there is overlap between the two categories of spells. In fact, to the creative and unorthodox mind, any spell could be defensive and any spell could be offensive. It is true that, traditionally, there are those spells with which we do associate with being more offensive and others more defensive…but this is precisely the concept I wish to have you all practice today. Something we will get to in just a moment.”

So.
And…here things went again. It was a good, healthy thing for young minds to question and be curious. Though he did feel a certain discomfort in this vibe that some students seemed to be under the impression that he may be trying to trick them in some capacity. Not wishing to repeat the exact same words he had already said to her peers earlier regarding this, why one or the other and not both, Jericho simply smiled and decided he ought to just address this directly and with a great sadness weighing upon his chest - these poor students!.
“The importance of both defense and offense is not something up for debate, I promise,” he assured her, as well as all her peers who still seemed on the fence and looking at their half empty glasses, with a laugh and both palms raised up as a passive gesture. “I believe we all can agree that in order to succeed you need both. No duellist has ever won a professional duel otherwise. It is much easier for us standing here now to take our time to think through options. We have the luxury of time and space, but in the heat of the moment…when we must act immediately and on instinct, this luxury is gone. You must make a choice in that moment, one…or the other…and that is all I was hoping to illustrate and practice in a safe environment. To invite you each to reflect upon your own nature, instincts, and to understand how these instincts would manifest themselves when you must make a quick decision during a duel. To become a good dueller and spellcaster, it is important to understand your motivations and are intimately acquainted with your instincts. The inner nature of your spellcaster, if you will.”
His response was directed towards everyone, as indicated by his wandering warm gaze upon each student. This was also why he had made it clear none had to share their reasons for choosing the side they had. Instincts were intimate.
“So, why not both?” he mused, that tenderness still prominent in his voice as he shifted his gaze back to the blonde. “Both is simply not an option in this particular exercise. I do apologize to you all for not making that more transparent.” He paused a moment so he could retrieve a hair band from his pocket to begin to put his hair up in a messy half bun. "And may I have your name, please?"
Now back at the front once again in front of the board, Jericho presses his palms together once more and addressed the group. "Now, if you will all please take another moment to take a deep breath with me...nice and slow..." And he repeated the earlier process with his arms stretching up high above himself and circling around back into position. "I sense and see much tension within you all, understandably so, and this all is not meant to be a stressful experience but rather an inner dialogue. Nor is it a matter of right and wrong between these two choices. This exercise and discussion was geared towards you discovering, rediscovering, or solidifying your inner nature as a spellcaster. Champions do not become champions solely because they win. In fact, difference between champions and everyone else is that champions are never afraid of losing, while everyone else is afraid of winning. The hours, weeks, months and years they spent you will spend practicing and learning magic are all the foundations you need to become champions yourselves and any victorious performance itself is merely the demonstration of that championship character, a character that is understood and cultivated."
He certainly hoped that this put them a bit more at ease. He would certainly dislike for the suspicions to continue. Perhaps he should have sought more advice from his friend so as to have prevented this sort of confusion.
Meanwhile, the blackboard behind him had the following written upon it:

“Behind me you can see some highlighted responses from your peers, all fantastic takes. Conceptually, at the core, duellist and other professionals define offensive magic utilized to attack another, whereas defensive magic is used to repel or block a magical attack. As many of you have already touched upon, there is not a clean line dividing up spells into this or that…it is about the intention of the caster. Just as many of you lamented having to choose between one phrase or the other, justifiably so, that too relies on the intention.” There had been an intended connection here, yes. Which again, he sincerely hoped none felt this some sort of trickery of tomfoolery. It was all meant to inspire and be light. “I am certain that, even from the short list of spells on the board here, you can think of ways in which they can be used either as a defense or as an offense. Understanding the fundamental difference between offensive and defensive magic, along with the ability to stretch your mind a bit to see unorthodox uses, are vital components to understanding combination spellcasting.”
"Now, it is only fair that I too share." As had been inquired point blank by one of the boys earlier. "It may come as little surprise to you all given your first impression of myself that I, by nature, veer more towards the side of favoring a defensive stance over an offensive one. I am quite soft spoken and nor particularly aggressive naturally, preferring to use my opponent's momentum against them...quite like the art of breaking balance you may be familiar with in such practices as Judo. Which is why the move I am more infamously known for is the precision and potency in which I erect a Shield Charm or counterspell that then rebounds a spell back to the caster. This is precisely the thing which I would like to train and practice with you today. In essence, by learning to use your Shield Charm to redirect and deflect spells cast at you, you are bypassing a couple steps in combination spellcasting and effectively turning one cast into both a barrier and a stinger or even a lure. Though combination spellcasting and theory will have to be for another time."
Another pause, one long enough to clap his hands together thrice to vanish the red ribbon upon the floor as well as the chalk board behind him.
“I had been hoping for a more even divide between the two phrases to pair you up but... just as life is full of unpredictabilities and we must adapt…” he continued, his eyes briefly glancing back over towards Hawk and his curious little friend who had uttered the same word earlier. “We will only be utilizing two spells for this training. Well…technically three, though two have the same outcome. The obvious being Protego in its basic form. The others are Rictusempra and Titillando. Both spells will cause the target to cause the target to become incapacitated with laughter. The difference between the two is a matter of one being a charm and the other a hex and are harmless enough. A simple Finite will remove the effects of both.” His wand out, Jericho conjured two orbs that bobbed up and down in the air just as the sign about removing shoes had done. “The wand movements for both are a bit complicated and require a limber wrist, hence the need to loosen up that joint earlier. The Tickling Hex, Titillando, somewhat resembles a tadpole in my opinion where one starts on the inside and traces the head with a little swish for the tail. Rictusempra, a feather that starts at the calamus, has a pointed bit at the top, and then spirals inwards with a sharp flick to finish the movement. If you need a reference, these will be floating around the area for you to reference, or you may ask me for guidance and I will gladly assist.” And he paused again to gesture towards the little floating orbs that hovered in place.
[ if you can read this you don't need glasses ]
“That is more than enough jabbering from myself, those of you who have not already zoned out...I thank and appreciate your focus... so let's get everyone moving and evolving. Now, keeping intent in mind, both these spells are perfectly safe to practice on one another. Even a casting that requires more focus and will not hurt someone. Which is why I would like for you to pair up and practice either or both the Tickling Charm or Tickling Hex on one another. Upon a successful cast, please remove them with a Finite. After a bit of practice, we will add in the Shield Charm element and work on redirecting spells cast at ourselves. If you are uncomfortable with this, you may sit off to the side of the mats and watch for now. Though without proper practice and my own eyes and those of your peers confirming you are a responsible caster, I unfortunately will not be able to allow you to participate in our final activity. Unless you have a question, please begin...”
And if anyone needed help pairing up, he would certainly step in as necessary.
OOC: Thank you all for bearing with me and for so much to work with On to a little mini (medium?) activity! Please partner up with another member to complete this task. We will move on to the main activity sometime on February 17th/18th.
Remember that neither of these spells should harm your character, so no dying please, though the intensity may vary from character to character depending on the caster's intent as well as how ticklish your character is.

Merlin. WHY did he have to meet her gaze AND smile at her? Even though she thought it be one of those encouraging ones, it really didn’t help to improve her slightly addled brain. Aria did her best to send a smile back though it came out more like a grimace. Immediately after that, her gaze fled to the room in general.
Aha.
So THAT’S what those questions were. Or at least Aria thought she had them figured out as one by one her fellow students answered. She was inclined to agree with a few of the persons on her side of the line, and she even nodded in agreement to their remarks - in particular to: Darius and Violet. Dawn earned herself stares because Aria started to wonder if her fellow fourth year had memorised a textbook. But in short, Ms. McLeod had managed to pull herself together to an extent. A lot of it came from the fact that she had averted her gaze from the Greek God-like hunk who was their instructor for this seminar.
With Sir Jericho back at the front of the room, the Slytherin decided her best strategy would be to stare at anyone - and anywhere- but him. For that reason, her gaze was fixed on the back of the student’s head in front of her. Deeeeeep breath. Aria did just that, and this time was able to feel the calm flow throw her. Breathing techniques really did help. But for the love of Merlin, who was afraid of winning? Winning equalled success in young Ms. McLeod’s mind.
Her eyes shifted to the board where she read all the things written there; her brain registered the hum of Sir Jericho’s manly voice. She hoped she would be able to process most of this information. The Shield Charm always sounded so basic to Aria but she knew that it could be complicated for some. For her, the spell could go either way, and a lot of times it depended on her mood or ability to focus.
There went the ribbons and board. Onward to practice then. Clearly she would need a partner so after Sir Jericho did his conclusion about the spells they would be practicing, Aria asked out loud to those around her: “Looking for a partner! Anyone?” In the meanwhile, she would do some practice - practice that involved wand movements.
"I... ummm...." Ash had stopped listening when the war was mentioned, choosing to stare off to space instead. It didn't stop her vibes(which she didn't know were visible) from going crazy though, and not in a good way either. She wished she had her bracelets on, but she had taken them off for the physical activity. She didn't have her markers either. Instead, she tightly clasped her hands together until her knuckles were white and tried not to cry. No, she did not need pity or acknowledgement. It was just... a fresh wound. It would always be a fresh wound. Mirrors and the war... yeah. The hurt didn't just go away. Ash was sure that Jericho had asked her a question, only she hadn't been listening. so. "I... I didn't hear what you asked me." She released her hands and shrugged. "Sorry."
She tried to pay more attention to the rest. He likes defensive magic? That doesn't surprise me............. I like protego........ The... tickling spell. No. Yeah.............................................. ...... Ash would rather sit that one out. But she didn't want to look like a coward... she could handle a tickling charm... actually, she probably couldn't. She knew what would happen.
Reluctantly, Ash got off the mats and sat by herself. But she wasn't a coward. She wasn't. Nobody had said it, because it wasn't true, and she wasn't going to believe it, also because it wasn't true. She pulled her knees to her chest. Also, she hummed to herself under her breath, because it was calming. This Was Fine(kind of). Ash was Being Smart. It was tough though... sometimes being smart meant sitting out and Ash felt bad about it. She was okay though.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

This man talked as much as how long his hair was... Even Daniel, who usually enjoyed learning new things, began to zone out after finding out that what they were going to learn was a Shield Charm. It's not that learning that wasn't useful. It was just... he'd been practising it since his first year at Hogwarts and he knew how to do it by this point. Deflecting spell, on the other hand, was a different story. He was still unable to do that. Maybe this lesson wasn't going to be a total waste of his time...
The Hufflepuff looked up at the two orbs that represented the two spells they would have to cast on their partner. Partner... he needed to work with someone... MWEH. His dark brown eyes searched the room for Atlas Flamsteed. The thought of getting to cast spells on him was very funny to him. But he couldn't find him among the other students yet, so he focused on one of the Slytherin's instead. "I can be your opponent" he said as he approached Aria. Notice how he didn't say 'partner'? Because this was not a partnership in his mind.

Darius was getting quite familiar with certain feelings that threatened him to be silent as the Instructor Jericho was quite friendly and smiled while engaging his thoughts. Cautious... "I... suppose so, hadn't really considered that before," Darius responded, feeling his face flush from the warm spotlight, though his expression remained intact. Nodding in consideration before he looked to everyone else's responses to listen.
It did take Darius by surprise to hear the war mentioned. Unconsciously, he felt numb all over as he briefly remembered hiding with his sister Daisy while spells flew about until they saw dad's face coming to get them home. Oh right, need to breathe. He watched as a Ravenclaw student walked off the mats to just sit... he blinked. Well, this was awkward. He took the time observing what was on the board and digesting what was to be done. Now to partner up... hmm..
Watching others pair up, Darius figured he'd need to find someone as well.. shrugging, he walked off the mat too to where (astrocat) was sitting, "Hey.." squatting down since he was awkwardly tall by her, "You mind me sitting with you?" Aka partner up? Who said spells couldn't be used while sitting. Or he could always just find someone else if she wasn't cool with this.
'What do you feel your choice says about yourself as a duellist?' Bella eyed professor seminar a little perplexed for several seconds before she stammered not used to getting a question back on her answer. "I uh guess it means that I as a duellist favour defense and letting my opponent attack and then attack when i see a good opportunity to do so. I'm not one to attack first and ask questions later." It was probably in part by why she was sorted into Slytherin too since Bella didn't like confrontations and fleed if she could.
Could they sit down yet? She wondered as she listened to her peers and tried to do the stretches that professor seminar showed them, unsure if she was doing them right. Mr Vertargen eventually moved on talking a long while, which made Bella zone out halfway through. As they were asked to partner up she remembered the profs earlier wish and raised her hand to say. "Professor, you didn't say anything about the patronus charm that you promised me you would do." Even if she hadn't listened to every word she knew he had left that out.
Letting her eyes wander around as Aria teamed up with Evan and Daris headed for Ash she wondered who she'd partner with."Does anyone want to be my partner?" Bella called out, hoping that Apollo would join her, but anyone would do.
Using Hawk, aka the artist formerly known as Mercer, as a shield was all very well and good, but for the fact that if Jericho Vertagren really did launch an attack (which did seem unlikely, the Hufflepuffs were more insidious than that), he was unlikely to last in that capacity. Then there was the fact that they were friends and so Milo, perhaps, probably, preferred to keep him around. At least, he thought so. He was fairly certain. Birdman made good company, good enough that Milo would warn him away from the food in the Great Hall, an act which probably fell into the category of friendship.
He at last let go of his hand, but that was all for the moment, watching this Jericho character over the top of Mercer's head, tempted to argue with him on several points a dozen times over, but saying nothing.
Until they were all told to go off and practice, at which point Milo turned expressionlessly to Mercer Birdman, said, "Outstanding hawk," and tickled his ear.

OOOOH!
Potential partner!
Ariel smiled widely, the word that was ‘opponent’ amusing her in this context. But she was quite willing to humor Yoon. Her head inclined in a gesture of acceptance. “I’m delighted to be your opponent!” Though not very familiar with this Hufflepuff much less his skills with dueling. Truthfully? Aria wasn’t the best at dueling but Yoon need not know THAT.
Ms. McLeod took steps back so that there would be sufficient space between her and her opponent. Completely forgetting about dueling ettiquette, she sent a spell flying - “Rictusempra!” The complicated leaf-like wand movement almost had her messing her moment up. ALMOST.
Aria managed to keep her head on straight and hoped with all her heart that Yoon would succumb to the effects of the spell.

"I am the BEST hawk," Mercer agreed as he lifted his wand and tried out those motions that the dueler dude wanted them to practice. It was THREE separate spells, and Mercer didn't know any of them. Milo probably didn't either, because Milo was good at a lot of things, but he hadn't proven to be a very effective partner in class yet.
Dead entertaining, though.
"We should have gone with defensive. He likes defensive. Or he says he does. Do Hufflepuffs lie?" Everyone lied, but did they lie in PARTICULAR? Mercer waved his wand again. "Should... we try the spells? I like the idea of a tickly one. And probably we need to know how to make shields, if only because I think the gargoyles are out to get us. Throwing stuff at our heads."
So intent was what they were focusing on today, was it? At least that meant he wouldn't be at a disadvantage on what spells they were practicing by whichever side he'd gone with. Once the spells WERE listed, he made a small face at the idea of having to practice the tickling charm on one another, but while he could have chosen to sit out with Ash... he did want the extra practice as well so he decided he would just... do it.
Glancing around as everyone else started to partner up per Mr. Vertagren's instructions, Evan spotted Bella still looking around for someone. He wasn't sure if she was looking for someone specific, but he figured it was worth seeing if she wanted to partner anyways.
Making his way towards the Slytherin, wand in his hand now so they could start if she was up for it, he paused in front of her. "Hey Bella, do you still need a partner?" And if so, she was welcome to try casting first so they could get practice underway.

It was true that Milo did not know those spells. It was also true that he was not a remotely effective partner in almost every class; he'd always made up for excelling well beyond his level in his favoured topics by falling far short of his peers in areas that failed to catch his interest.
Like tickling spells. And duelling.

Oh…dear. That grimace certainly was not the most favorable of facial expressions and it made this ‘Greek God’ began wondering if perhaps the young lady was afflicted with a stomach ache. There was little time to consider nor console her, however, as she seemed to jump right into it when it came to the search for a partner. Pleased by her recovery, he offered another encouraging smile as she partnered with Daniel…and certainly had not missed the manner in which the young man addressed her with the words intensifying the heated. Certainly nothing wrong with a competitive side, which left Jericho quite curious as to how he and Aria would get on.
Atlas Flamsteed was off most likely off partnering with his brother and avoiding the extravagant grump that was you, Mr. Yoon.
“Good form, Aria,” he applauded as he walked over and unclasped his hands from behind his back. “If I may…” It was permission to touch her. Which, if granted, he would have gingerly adjusted the angle of her wrist and just where her hand rested along the handle of her wand. “While precision is key and we all often fall into a certain rigidness when seeking perfection in a casting, you will find with a little adjusting and a loose wrist that the wand movement will feel more fluid and more an extension of your own arm.” A matter that would also come with more practice. “Keep up the good work. You as well, Daniel. Very keen to be shown your skills.”

While Darius had been left with a little additional food for thought, something which Jericho encouraged with a smile and nod of the head, Ashley’s reaction left him concerned. Less in the silence to his own query, which there had been one, and more in her body language and the way the air around her diverted in certain points as things closed off. He may have missed the immediate trigger to what had elicited this response, his attention had been on those speaking when they had offered to, but he felt it safe to conclude it was in reference to the war.
“That is alright, Ashley,” he offered in assurance to the young Miss. He had spoken a lot and minds, particularly young and antsy ones, could only focus so long on something. Twas why he felt he worked better in one-on-one situations rather than in large groups. Her choice to sit out had not surprised him either, it was her choice, and he was pleased to see that Darius was still choosing to include her despite her attempts to close herself off further from the group. He was not sure that the young man would notice the appreciative twinkle in the eye and accompanying smile, but they were gifts given to him for his compassion.
He would swing back around to check on the two of them in a moment.

Ah! Chuckling to himself, Jericho lightly tapped his forehead to chastise himself for forgetting to swing back around to it. Happened all too often when he did not address something immediately, much like he often coached his clients when they were working through their issues. Putting things off until later all too often meant they were completely forgotten and thus returned to haunt you with more fever. At least on this case it was the pleasant curiosity of a young mind - something that he would always encourage to come back and nudge him about in any capacity.
“Absolutely, thank you for reminding me,” he replied with a small and couple of claps with just his fingers. “The Patronus Charm is very powerful magic, a particular spell that is prohibited on the professional dueling stage in many tournaments and casting it can earn you an instant disqualification. Now, while primarily used as a defensive spell to ward off against dementor attacks … or as a convenience in sending messages across a finite distance, there is something to be said in its use to attack an opponent and knock them off their feast with the silver wispy creature the spell conjures and in most cases is an attack that can and will penetrate the majority of Shield Charms. It is all in the hands of the creativity of the caster.” Had that covered what he had wanted to cover? He paused to stroke his scruffy chin and molded his hand from index finger to thumb along his jawline. He certainly hoped so, but he welcomed any follow up questions she may have to that.
Smiling as Bella found a partner in Evan, he resumed his walking around while offering this new pair a pleasant smile as well.
“Good luck, Bella…Evan…I’ll be along to check on your progress to see how you’re getting on in a bit.”

"Did it work?"
Such a peculiar duo, Hawk and his friend. Too far away to be privy to their conversation and suspicions, Jericho instead just so happened to look over when Hawk’s friend (he truly did wish that he knew the name of the boy so he could properly address him) had begun casting at Hawk with a certain cavalier aesthetic to the movements. Something that would serve him well, to contrast with some of the more rigid holding and casting he had observed among his peers.
Rather than interrupting the two, their auras both maintained a certain passively aggressive energy directed towards his own, Jericho instead smiled at the two with a dainty little golf clap before moving along. He had, after all, presumed that Hawk had been prepared for the tickling that may follow his friend's spell and was unaware that it may have been cast without warning.
Circumnavigating the space once more before walking back to the middle of the mats, Jericho clapped his hands together thrice to draw attention back to him. “A brief pause in your castings, if you please,” he implored. Hands back to being clasped behind his back, he traced his steps carefully across the soft woven ground as he spoke. “Protego is a spell I am sure most of you are quite familiar with. For those who are not, this will be the perfect opportunity to practice it and add it to your own personal spell arsenal. The wand movement is simple enough. You simply hold your wand and act as though you are painting the air with a brush. A soft leisurely upwards movement ending suddenly with a firm flick at the wrist to bring your wand horizontally to the ground as you speak the incantation, Protego. ‘Pro’ as you have your wrist facing downwards and end on ‘tego’ where wand and wrist are perpendicular to the ground.” He paused to conjure a little visual aid of the linear path of the movement to join the other two floating orbs. “For those who this spell is new to, please focus your efforts today on learning to hone your skills in erecting this spell. We are all learning at our own paces and there is nothing wrong with that.”
“Now, for those more familiar with Protego, you may begin casting with the intent of reflecting the spell back to your partner. To accomplish this, you first need to cast with the intention to do so. No Shield Charm will simply reflect a spell back of its own accord and surprise you, the casting must be purposeful. For complete beginners, I recommend the following. You cast the spell as per usual, but immediately follow with the same wand movement but in reverse. This means rather than your wrist being perpendicular to the ground, your wrist should be bent more towards the floor with the tip of your wand doing the same. Once you have become more proficient, you will not need to reverse your movements, rather it will be woven into your intent.” Almost like a bit of wandless magic. Almost. There were some differences in principle and execution to that. “I will give you a few more minutes before we move on to a game combining these spells. If you and your partner are able to successfully use Protego to rebound, it will be like tossing a quaffle back and forth to one another between your Shield Charms. Only difference being that this quaffle will eventually dissipate as the Tickling Charm and Tickling Hex lose their gusto. So, off you go. I shall be walking around should you require some assistance.”
Holding his spot in the middle of the mats for a bit, Jericho strolled along the line made by two mats nestled side-by-side one another and returned to check on Darius and Ashley. “Hello,” he greeted the two with a smile, the freckles on his face almost twinkling. “Is there anything I can do here to assist? Ashley, would you like a bit of air before giving one of the spells a go?” He would have outright asked if she was fine, but it was abundantly obvious that she was not so no need to draw further attention to that. “Darius here,” he continued, laying a hand upon the older boy’s shoulder. “I am sure has a very charming laugh and a good energy about him to assist you in your exploration today.”
OOC: hello hello HELLO! Thank you all so much for your patience. During site's glitchy period I was entirely unable to access site and Felixir has given the green light to go ahead and extend things a bit to compensate for the site down time
This is the last bit of practice before we move on to a little game, which we will move on to in approximately 36 hours from the time of this post.

Aka partner up? Who said spells couldn't be used while sitting. Or he could always just find someone else if she wasn't cool with this.
Um. Ash looked up as an older student she barely knew but had heard of approached. "Hi Darius. Um, sure..." After all, she was not the boss of sitting on the ground. She tilted her head questioningly. There was no reason why he would sit by her, so she concluded that he was checking on her, or maybe he had some other motive. Partners did not quite occur to her though. And she was fine, so. Well anyway, I think you should go, because... um, I don't really have a good reason. But if I did, you'd be like "I should go, because that's a good reason." Ash didn't tell him to go, though. It wouldn't be a very smart(or polite!) thing to do.
...asdfghjkl!!! Of course she attracted more notice when she started acting strangely and avoiding participation... she could already see Jericho coming over. "Hi. I'm fine." Not an answer to his question, and not the truth. She offered him two-fifths of a smile though(by accident and without realizing), just cause he asked and didn't yell at her for being slow to do the activity.
.................................
Ash shifted her weight from foot to foot. "I like protego and I'm kind of good at it." She did NOT like the other ones. But you had to do the other ones to do protego, as far as Ash was aware. But she didn't WANT to do the other ones. But you had to do the other ones to do protego. Maybe she could do it? Maybe? Unsure afraid, she looked to Darius for guidance. He kind of looked like someone trustworthy.
"...I guess I could do it." In a moment of confidence, Ash walked back over to the mats. She hoped that Darius would follow before she changed her mind.

Darius did briefly wonder if he made the right decision in walking off to work with Ash who didn't seem interested in participating. Thankfully, she didn't turn him away and he didn't have to ask someone else to work with. Though she didn't say anything the vibes were there that she wasn't too sure herself on this whole matter.
That's when Jericho arrived and placed a hand on Darius' shoulder, which briefly caused his own cheeks to redden. All the big Dare could do was blink when Jericho suggested that he had a nice laugh. ...Huh? Oh... right, the tickling charm. Which may have caused the room to get warm as well, oh well. "Thanks Jericho," Clever instructor, he was. Mostly thanking him for giving them reassurance. Ahem. After that little cheer-up, Darius and Ash were left to themselves again.
"That's cool, Ash." Darius said, after hearing Ash mention her interest in the protection charm. Suddenly, he was briefly reminded of his little sister Tierra, although she was younger than Ash, he got a brief vibe of one needing a little push.. Somehow. Walking with her back onto the mats he attempted to fill the void, "You know, it's not very often I get the chance to laugh so I'd be more than fine if you practiced the tickling charm or hex on me first," He could use the laugh from the amount he'd been through himself, "I bet you could do it in one shot." Then that'd mean she could get it over with. That was his own point of view if she perhaps could see it that way as well. Plus, who wouldn't want to knock down the taller one? "So what you think? Still up for it?" It was fair she'd get to make the choice since he made his already.

Did it work? Mercer patted all over his body to see if he was suddenly feeling ticklish. He wasn't. But he still grabbed his middle and laughed hiLARIOUsly loudly. Maybe it didn't work, but it was funny that it could of worked, and it was funny that Hufflepuffs were the most awfully dangerous of them all, and it was funny that gargoyles were out to get them.
"You did it! Good job! And now we practice the shield spell. This one is the most important." Apparently. Mercer held up his wand and thought about a giggly spell bouncing back and forth between the two of them. "Pro- protego. I guess I still have a bit of the tickles."

Aria refused to be stumped by the Greek God in human form. It was pathetic and she usually turned up her nose at any girl who went gaga over some hunk good looking guy. Honestly, ladies. Get yourself some real life goals!
She thought that Yoon was quite the formidable opponent. The young Slytherin was quite delighted by this. The fact would help her to improve her abysmal dueling skills, yes? You know what quite wouldn’t? {even though it would in the long run} Sir Jericho adjusting her wrist. There was a split second of hesitation where she told herself him helping would in turn help her. Too tongue-tied to say a word, Aria nodded her permission. Loose wrist. Aria nodded once again, clinging to his words in desperation so as to not faint. Good work? She was doing good work? YAY! Her lips twitched upwards and she nodded without looking at the instructor. Indeed she would keep this up.
Hopefully.
When the call came for them to pause with the activity, Aria did so. Painting the air with a brush? Aria wished she could find such romantic ways to describe wand movements. Sir Jericho was perfection, truly. While she wasn’t new to the spell, Sir Jericho’s explanation of when the flick the wrist and whatnot offered her a new perspective into how to cast this spell.
Determined to find the necessary intent needed to deflect, Aria turned again to Yoon. “Shall we?”

In Ash's opinion, the sounds produced by tickling charms were closer to screams than laughs, but she chose not to voice that.
She took a deep breath. "Okay. I'll cast first, and then you can cast on me." That way, she'd have to stick around, because she'd feel bad about doing that to him if he didn't have a chance to get revenge. She also didn't voice that, because it seemed kind of a twisted way to think.
Hey, maybe he'd block it. Maybe he'd duck. She practiced her wrist movements and pronunciation and stuff. "I think I'm ready. Ready?"
... three, two, one...
"Titillando." Nothing... probably because she hadn't actually pointed her wand at anything. Hm. Her brain and her heart were sending mixed signals to her body. She made sure to point at Darius this time and she casted with intent. "Titillando." She frowned as she watched the hex shoot towards him. It was pretty good, all things considered. Well... it was a technically good spell. Ash wouldn't describe it as morally good. It didn't make her feel good. But!!! It was a technically good one. That counted for something.
Violet was not at all thrilled about the prospect of being made to laugh against her will. But she dutifully practiced both the Rictumsempra charm and the Titillando hex. When they got to Protego, she was more confident--she felt she was actually quite good at that by now and had even used it successfully in the battle with the Neo-Alliance a few years ago. But she'd never used it to actually turn a spell back on its caster and this quite intrigued her, so she practised that with intent several times as well.
Then they had to find partners, which Violet always found harder to do that any spell. "Anyone still need a partner?" she called hopefully, hoping everyone was not already taken.
I've also been locked out of the site for over a week, so I hope someone is still in need of a partner.
Milo watched Mercer (Hawk), and squinted a bit. It seemed unlikely his spell worked on a delay - if anything, that seemed like an added feature to intentionally incorporate into a spell, allowed for an alibi and everything, if that was the kind of thing that appealed - and even less likely that the spell had worked at all. Peculiar.
It did not occur even for a moment that Hawk (Birdman) had found something genuinely funny that warranted laughter. More like this was an act, a ploy which was almost worthy of the Hufflepuffs, except that it didn't feel sinister, so it was probably fine.
"Borrowing shields is easier," Milo said, but he raised his wand again as well, shuffling around slightly in the process to ensure there was always a Birdman (Mercer) between himself and That Man. If there was just one spell outside his selection of niche interests that he thought was worth knowing (for the record, there were a few), it was this one. He practiced the incantation for himself, with added wand movement. "Protego. Like the Latin."
In that way, there was plenty of overlap between spells and one of Milo's specialist subjects, perhaps enough to see him through the activity. Except he lacked, in that moment, the motivation for the intent, was still a little preoccupied keeping an eye on those around him, and had moved onto musing on hypothetical traps to lay to protect a hypothetical tower dormitory, flicking his wand upwards with no concern as to what energy it might decide to manifest when left to its own devices.

Darius nodded in what could be taken as encouragement and understanding after hearing Ash say she'll cast first. "Alright, you've got this." He briefly wondered if he should just stay standing waiting to be hit or if he should attempt to deflect... He held his wand out appearing at the ready. Bracing himself as he heard the first Titillando he felt a gust of wind against his chest and then nothing.
Then the second one Darius felt within his stomach and that's when he felt the sensation of ants dancing on him. "Hehe..hehe... that's hehe... good shoot.. hahaha" Dropping his wand to clutch his stomach as the giggles erupted. His face reddening from the heat as the tickles expanded. He was fine, just needed a moment for it to stop. It was pleasant but would be a bit too pleasant if it continued long enough.
