Default Transfiguration Lesson 2: Bird is the Word

In the months since the Neo-Alliance followers took over the sixth floor, nearly all transfiguration classes have been held outside, and this one is no exception. Today’s lesson takes place on a lovely early spring afternoon on an area of the school grounds just outside the Forbidden Forest. The weather is unseasonably warm for this time of year, so there is no need for heating charms.

As you approach, you’ll notice two rows of benches arranged in a semicircle in front of a copse of trees. A conjured chalkboard sits in the middle of the semicircle, bearing the message: DO NOT TOUCH THE BOXES! The two large cardboard boxes in question are stacked behind the chalkboard, slightly hidden from view. Professor Carton stands beside the chalkboard to greet the students. At first glance, he appears unaffected by recent events. There is no sign of fear or sadness on his face; the only thing different from his usual stoic demeanor is his unreadable expression as he watches the students arrive.

He greets each student with instructions to take a seat, though he gives no indication that the students from The Room are expected to separate from the others. An oversight on his part, perhaps?

OOC: Welcome to our second OOC transfiguration lesson! Please remember that all students living in The Room would be escorted to class. We will begin in 18-20 HOURS CLASS HAS STARTED.

Lesson Progression:

Q1: What kind of animal would you want to help you in a fight? Why did you choose that animal?
Q2: What are some things to consider when conjuring? Why is conjuring an animal more difficult than conjuring an object?

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Fiona made her way to yet another outdoor Transfiguration lesson. The weather was quite warm which did please the Snakette as she didn't really like it when the temperature was cold. Upon noticing the message on the chalkboard and the two boxes at the same time, Fiona was impassive.

"Good afternoon, Professor," she greeted with a small, courteous nod before sitting down.

Bella made her way outside to the new outdoor transfiguration class. It was a nice and warm afternoon, so despite everything else that was going on she had a little skip in her step. The black haired eleven year old snakette shot a small smile over at Professor Carton as she approached the 'classroom' in greeting. "Good afternoon, professor Carton!" Bella waved at her fellow Slytherin; Fiona before she took a seat on the oppsite bench, saving a seat beside her for Apollo hoping that he was on his way to the lesson. It wasn't until now that she really took in the two boxes and the message on the chalkboard. She was going to sit silently and wait for things to start, because she didn't want to anger any of the hooded men that always seemed to lurk around even when Bella couldn't see them.

Kale had twisted his pink hair up in a bun as he was marched down to the makeshift classroom by the Goons. He fastened it with a spare leather shoelace and breathed in the fresh air. Outside. Gosh. Was there anything more glorious than fresh air? He’d been resigned to the Room so long now just a little taste a freedom did wonders for his spirit.

Which was still very much in tact if for nothing else but the general well-being of the people in the Room. Somebody had to put on the airs of being upbeat.

He didn’t smile at Carton. Kale barely acknowledged teachers these days beyond the occasional answer to their questions to seem involved. All of the adults had abandoned them to their fates. He didn’t care if there was some plan the students weren’t privy to happening behind the scenes. There would never be any explanation they could give that would make Kale forgive them.

His father would be ashamed of all of them.

The beautiful weather only reminded Cece of all the things she wasn't allowed to do and while she was so grateful to have another class outdoors, it made her a little sad. On the inside sad. She was getting better at not letting the sad show.

"Good afternoon, Professor." Her greeting was polite and quiet and she quickly moved past the man to take up a spot on one of the benches. She didn't care what they'd be learning today, she was just glad to get out of the room for a while.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudien was quite used to Transfiguration lessons benign held outside. After being unable to roam about the Castle as often as she used to, the girl was only too happy to get outdoors. Especially on days like these. It was so warm and pleasant, the atmosphere hoisted her spirits just a tad. Her keen, dark eyes took in the setup of today’s lesson and curiosity about the boxes arose. Carton himself seemed so… unbothered. Yeah, right. Claudine, possibly Hogwarts’ Queen of keeping her face devoid of expression, saw right through that. Carton cared for his students so there was no way she was going to believe his face. “Hi, Professor.’’

Ignoring the hooded chaperones, Claudine moved to find a seat. Since Carton hadn’t mentioned that they were to sit with the Roomies, she took full advantage of this to sit beside Fiona. “Hi, Fiona. Hi, Bella.’’ Merlin. She had missed the girls. Maybe she should have just sat with Cecelia but there had been no particular seating instructions given. Who knew which benches were reserved for the Room kids?

Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!

Mamie kept her head down, per usual, as the guard escorted all the Room-mates to Transfiguration, which was again, gloriously, outside. Maybe a little too close to the forest for her personal comfort, but it was better than being shut in the room, and since when did anyone here care about her personal comfort? Not since August 31st, apparently.

"Hello, Professor." She made her way past Professor Carton and the chalkboard, noting he seemed unbothered, and took a seat next to Cecelia. She didn't need to be told, the Room-mates were supposed to stay away from the non-Room-students. And if Carton didn't care, it was probably safer that way, too. Safer for those already in the Room, and for those not in the Room.

At least she had her wand for class again, and presumably would get to use it to learn a new spell. That thought cheered her up a bit, at least, bringing a tiny smile to her eyes.

Arts TRANSPONSTER!

Catherine wasn't one of the ones locked up in The Room, but she was glad to have lessons outside as being the Castle itself felt very suffocating at the moment. That was saying something as Catherine usually didn't mind staying indoors for long periods of time.

It didn't mean she was any less tense, however, and her habits of biting her nails and tugging at her hair were stronger than ever. In fact, there were hardly any fingernails left for her to chew, so when she settled for class without greeting the professor, she was discreetly twirling a strand of her hair in between her fingers, always looking around and watching the hooded figures.

Violet marched indifferently in line from the Room to Transfiguration class, perking up just a little bit as they hit the outdoors on what appeared to be a really nice day. It was good to get a bit more time outdoors for class, anyway.

When they reached the class, Violet murmured, "Good morning, Professor Carton," in a rather wooden voice, then walked past the boxes that bore the typical 'do not touch us' sign, and she really did not care much what was in them. It was hard to muster up any curiosity anymore. Looking at the benches, she wondered if there was assigned seating, then decided she wasn't going to bother to find out, so she walked over and sat on the other side of Mamie, who was sitting next to Cecilia.

There had been an advancement, but in all honesty Gracelyn wasn’t sure which was better. Feeling absolutely numb or feeling on the edge of crying and/or screaming at the top of her lungs. Which was where she was at right now. Wanting to scream out her frustration and fear for anyone to hear. She missed her friends who were locked up in the room. She missed her habits of dancing or tumbling in her free time, which had stopped mostly because she found she’d rather not risk getting locked up for something that might be seen as not approved for those who weren’t closely related to Muggles, since that was another tidbit she’d managed to surmise after some research in the library. She wasn’t locked up because whatever Muggle had led to her family’s considering themselves halfblood was so far back she didn’t have any idea when they were part of her family tree.

It had all led to how the newly sixteen-year-old Hufflepuff felt toward the situation. It was easier to just call it that rather than acknowledge how serious it actually was. She half expected to find half the student body incarcerated upon arrival at the next Transfiguration lesson, but there was a tiny frisson of hope upon seeing Cece and her other friends sitting there, and she sent the blonde Gryffindor a flicker of a smile as she chose a random bench to sit upon. She just had to hope her friends understood she was still there for them however she could be, before she applied her attention to the professor, possibly intentionally bypassing acknowledgement of the hoods. “Good afternoon, Professor Carton.” She wasn’t inclined to worry about the boxes. Not when there were so many other things to worry about.

The outdoor classrooms were really some of the only things this year keeping Noah sane. He hated not being able to discuss things privately with his friends or girlfriend without the Hoods being close by and hovering... At first, he had tried to spin it and pretend that he was some important official and the Hoods were just his bodyguards. However, that playful, tongue-in-cheek way of viewing it was proving to be very unsustainable.

Today he felt ‘meh’ which was better than ‘eh’ but nowhere near ‘Kay.

He nodded at the Professor as he arrived with the Hoods and other students from the Room. “Hi Professor,” he spoke in a unusual monotone voice for him. He was staring to not care about anything at this point. He glanced around the outside location and let out a loud sigh before finding a seat near Kale.

It didn't matter that Phoebe saw Cece all day every day when they were trapped together in the Room down in the dungeons. She still was pleased to sit next to her friend and bump elbows with her. Comfort in the limited number of safe people and places in this school.

"Hello, Professor Carton." Phoebe rested her weight on Cece for just a moment, a sort of silent hello, before sitting up straight again. In another life, she would want to touch those boxes, or at least consider it, but in THiS life... she wasn't interested in doing anything but sit. Here. With Cece.

Eden was here. She would try to remain here until the end of the lesson and then return to the room and her books in most of one piece. That was it.

"Professor," Eden nodded. The first year spoke not out of respect but because she feared the consequences of not adhering to at least the most basic standards of politeness. She didn't trust a single adult in this prison.

Eden's face showed no particular expression but certainly had seen brighter days. There were deep purple smudges beneath her eyes and her skin looked pallid and thin. Her hair was carefully dutch braided into two plaits and her uniform was somehow wrinkle-free.

She stood by some fellow students, not really paying attention as to whom. Her mind was preoccupied these days.

Even from afar the Slytherin was already glaring at the professor. It was easier to let her anger consume her rather than fear. Resentment. Lilith blamed the professors for what was being allowed to happen around here. They were supposed to keep the student body safe and so far...they've failed epically.

Her ice blue eyes bore into the man who claimed to be a professor before she made her way to take a seat. She hoped one day all of this would come back and bite them in their behind. For just standing around and doing nothing.

Dahlia said nothing at all during the daily monitored walks to and from lesson or any other breaks in which she was not being kept in The Room. Silence was good. So was not looking at anyone or anything along the way.

Having a Transfiguration lesson outside was nice though. A bit of fresh air was good for proper growth and health. Not that she looked like she had grown at all recently (she hadn't), she was still very much small for her age and pale. It was what it was though. She was here and currently all in one piece.

"Hello, Professor Carton," the first year spoke softly. She moved to take a seat on one of the beside Eden. The two boxes were seen but that was all. Whatever was inside them didn't even seem to catch her interest as it would have months earlier.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Emmerson didn't need to be told twice about the boxes. The "don't" that appeared before the word "touch" was about all she cared to see and the little girl immediately averted her gaze in response. See, this once defiant little girl had learned long ago that that was not how you survived a hostile takeover. Now that there were kids MISSING--gone, dead, no more--Emm was even less doing anything she wasn't given explicit instruction to do.

Call her crazy, but she...she liked being alive and if there was a light at the end of this dark tunnel, she wanted to be able to see it.

"Hello, Professor." She had questions--or...old Emmerson who hadn't seen kids disappear in a puff of black smoke had questions. This Emmerson?

Nah. None.

The small child took a seat by Phoebe and Cece, more for comfort than anything else.

Norman wasn’t surprised by the silence. These kids - and particularly, this one - were going through something no human being should ever have to experience, let alone at such a young age. He understood their anger more than they knew, probably more than any other adult living outside The Room could, and they had every right to be angry. As such, he wasn’t going to reprimand the boy for his silence or try to coax him out of his mood with a smile or pep talk. “Good afternoon, Mr. Trent,” he said despite the lack of greeting, nodding politely.

Another one from The Room. Although he didn’t let it show, Norman felt for them all, especially the ones like Miss Summers who were imprisoned not for anything they actually did wrong but for having non magical ancestry. By that logic, he should’ve been imprisoned along with them… but he couldn’t allow himself to think that way now. “Good afternoon, Miss Summers,” he greeted.

If Norman had known what Miss Blaze was thinking, he would’ve asked if it was really that obvious that he wasn’t as impassive as he looked. Since he didn’t, however, all he could do was watch as the girl took her seat. “Hello, Miss Blaze,” he greeted. The reason he hadn’t given any seating instructions was because he didn’t care where the students sat as long as they weren’t disrupting the lesson. These kids had been through enough! He wasn’t going to add to their suffering by segregating them.

Each kid from The Room that appeared broke Norman’s heart slightly more than the last. “Hello, Miss Turov,” he greeted, pretending not to notice her walking with her head down. The more he allowed himself to empathize with the children, the more vulnerable he was to his own emotions, and he couldn’t allow that for the students’ sake as much as his own.

In fact, there were hardly any fingernails left for her to chew, so when she settled for class without greeting the professor, she was discreetly twirling a strand of her hair in between her fingers, always looking around and watching the hooded figures.

Norman was not blind to Miss Mordaunt’s hair twirling or lack of a verbal greeting, but he chose not to draw attention to either. Nervous habits didn’t bother him as long as they weren’t causing a disturbance. He had a few of them himself, as a matter of fact. Was he twirling his wedding ring? He hadn’t noticed. “Good afternoon, Miss Mordaunt,” he greeted.

It was hard to muster up any curiosity anymore. Looking at the benches, she wondered if there was assigned seating, then decided she wasn't going to bother to find out, so she walked over and sat on the other side of Mamie, who was sitting next to Cecilia.

Another student wrongfully imprisoned because of blood status. Norman blinked, slightly taken aback by Miss Blackthorne’s greeting. Had the kids been locked up so long that they’d lost track of time? “Good afternoon, Miss Blackthorne,” he replied, watching as she took her seat.

Norman’s blue-green eyes followed Miss Abbott-Daniau to her seat, and for a brief moment, he wondered what the Hufflepuff was thinking. He quickly squashed his curiosity. Whatever it was, it would probably make him feel something, so he didn’t need to know. “Good afternoon, Miss Abbott-Daniau,” he replied, nodding politely.

Mr., Nam received a polite nod in return upon arrival, though the monotone voice had Norman slightly concerned. Concerned but not surprised. Sometimes no emotion was better than too much, he knew firsthand. “Hello, Mr. Nam,” he greeted, watching the Gryffindor take a seat.

In another life, she would want to touch those boxes, or at least consider it, but in THiS life... she wasn't interested in doing anything but sit. Here. With Cece.

“Hello, Miss James,” Norman replied, pretending not to see the way she rested her weight on Miss Summers. There was a time when he would’ve reprimanded her for that out of an abundance of caution - intercept anything that could even remotely be considered objectionable to the hoods before they did - but now it seemed futile and heartless. He tried that approach, and it still didn’t keep the students safe. As far as he was concerned, the students should be allowed to take comfort however they could... within reason.

For the record, Norman didn’t interpret silence as disrespect or defiance. There were plenty of valid reasons for quiet, so he wasn’t going to waste his time and his students’ by punishing them for it. Still, the acknowledgement was appreciated. “Good afternoon, Miss Tilly,” he replied, nodding in return.

Her ice blue eyes bore into the man who claimed to be a professor before she made her way to take a seat. She hoped one day all of this would come back and bite them in their behind. For just standing around and doing nothing.

Norman didn’t so much as flinch under Miss Crane’s glare. As far as he was concerned, the kids could feel whatever they needed to feel to get through this. He could take whatever blame they threw at him. “Hello, Miss Crane,” he greeted.

Miss Donovan’s arrival got the tiniest smile from Norman. “Hello, Miss Donovan,” he replied, watching as the girl took her seat.

Noman never thought there would come a day when he actually missed Emmerson Cambridge’s defiant antics, but here they were. Not that he could fault her for that, of course. Falling in line was for her own benefit. “Hello, Miss Cambridge,” he replied, nodding in acknowledgement.

Norman checked his watch: 1:00 on the dot, time to start. He quickly glanced toward the castle, watching for stragglers - not that he expected any. With nearly half the students imprisoned, late arrivals were all but a thing of the past. Seeing that there were none to be found, he turned his attention to the students. “Alright, let’s get started,” he addressed the class as a whole, pausing for a moment to give them time to focus on him.

HIs blue-green eyes scanned the area, searching for any sign of the hooded horrors lurking, and he had to be careful not to accidentally lock eyes with any of the students. So many glum faces… The thought briefly crossed his mind to open the lesson with a pep talk, but he quickly decided against it, remembering his own past experiences with dark wizards. He wasn’t going to patronize them with words of false hope. The best thing he could do for them now was share his knowledge and hope the lesson could give them a brief distraction, so he got straight to the point. “Okay, hypothetical scenario: Imagine you’re fighting an enemy - and I trust you all know by now who the enemy is.” That was the closest he would come to expressing anti-muggle sentiments in this lesson! “You can have one animal to help you in battle. What kind of animal would you choose, and why?”

OOC: Class has officially started! Feel free to join in at any time; just pretend your charrie has been here all along unless you want IC consequences for late arrival. You have 18-24 HOURS to answer the first question.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Fiona thought briefly about the possible answers before giving a little shrug and raising her hand. "I would go for a black mamba as it is fast and very lethal which is ideal in such a situation. I also think it is a good size to carry around."

Oh yes, Professor Carton was quite right. Emmerson knew exactly who the enemy was--everyone who was trying to get in trouble and get her in trouble with them. They were easy to spot, too. They were usually the ones yelling the wrong things at the wrong time and Emmerson knew exactly what animal she would need to deal with them.

"A dragon, like Artemis! Only...only a real dragon, a big one. A fully grown one to roast them the moment they start talking smack when the alliance is around and trying to drag the rest of us down with them. The dragon would eat them after, and and and then we don't have to file paperwork because uhh....I don't think anyone would try arresting a dragon and even if they DID, it would just roast them, too, then fly away."

Dragons were probably the best choice. Not many armies could stand up to them. They just flew in the sky, far away from danger.

"Are we getting dragons today, Professor? Can I have a proper black one? It's hard to pass Artemis 'cause he's purple."

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine, after a long time, felt a hint of relief and happiness sitting with her Housemates. The girl got herself busy with getting her Transfiguration notebook out. As she did so, she happened to be musing to herself: who knew that she’d have missed being around other humans this much? Not that the ones she was stuck with in the Room were bad.

Book now balancing on her lap, the Snakette mentally nodded. Uh huh. She knew who the enemy was. But this animal… did it have to be magical or mundane? Carton hadn’t specified and Fiona had named a snake.

The fifth year raised her hand. “A rat, like my Samm. Rats are small, can be hardly noticed or easily disregarded as a rodent. That can work as an advantage of sneaking up on the enemy and causing quite the distraction in the form of biting and scratching. Plus, it helps that they’re fast creatures.’’

At this point, Morgan was just going through the motions. He was forced to be in classes which was just barely a reprieve from the room he spent most of his time in with half the school. The Neo Alliance had managed to break his spirit and he wasn't even sure what the point of his day to day was anymore.

As he sat in class, he focused on some nonexistent point at the front of the room as his mind wandered, forgetting what class he was even in today. He vaguely heard the question and was about to offer a half-hearted answer. But that second year beat him to it. Dragons were his favorite, or they had been when he cared enough to have a favorite, and why wouldn't they be? They were awesome. But he didn't need to copy a little girl.

Without raising his hand, he answered in a monotone, almost robotic voice, "A basilisk. They don't even have to do anything. Someone simply looks at them and poof! They're gone."

Kinsay's mind wandered as she looked around at the trees. Some days, being outside and holding her wand was enough.

When the first question was posed, she nearly missed it, but was quick to raise her hand once she realized. She couldn't get in trouble. She couldn't.

Usually, Emmerson's answer would have been enough to cheer her up. She would have joined in on the question asking. Wondering if she could have a blue dragon or a Swedish Short-Snout one, because her wand had one of their heartstrings. But Emm's answer went over Kizzy's head. She was having a hard time focusing on anything. Even things that would usually be exciting. So when it was her turn, she paused before contributing dully. "A shark." If she were to be honest, she hadn't really thought the question through. It was hard to think anything through. But she needed an answer. "Because, um... Because I just want to meet one in real life."

Did it really matter?

It was hopeless. They'd just lose anyway. The enemy was stronger and bigger and knew more spells. They had more people on their side. They could lock you up in rooms and take away your wands. They could vanish you. They could kill.

So did it matter? Fighting the enemy? Kinsay didn't think so anymore, but there was still a tiny part of her that hoped Professor Carton would show them otherwise.

Violet had been trying to think of the most dangerous creatures she could--a Manticore came to mind, they were nearly impervious to spells and had a venomous sting. But no--Professor Carton hadn't said 'creature,' he'd said 'animal'. Well--the cape buffalo is big, aggressive and unpredictable and it's fearless and very protective of its young. But maybe a beast like that would be too unpredictable--what if she couldn't control it? And it's not like you could take something that big around with you in real life.

No, now that Violet thought it over, she would have to say, "Dog," she said decidedly when it was her turn to be called on. "A Doberman Pinscher. They're powerful and energetic, and extremely loyal and protective to their humans. But that also makes them aggressive and dangerous when those humans are threatened. I thought of other animals I could pick, but dogs are both dangerous and loyal, something you can control and which wouldn't turn on you, only your enemies. And you could take a dog around with you and no one would think it very odd." Plus, Violet thought, they'd be good company when you weren't fighting. Violet wished she had a dog back in the Room right now.

Cece offered the younger girls who sat by her the ghost of a smile in acknowledgement. She was trying. She was often failing, especially these days, but she was trying. Phoebe though, she didn’t have to try and be anything other than herself and she offered a side cuddle to her, appreciating the momentary comfort of having someone she loved close and safe and yeah. She appreciated Feebs’ company more than she could ever explain.

Cece wouldn’t want a creature with her in a fight, did the Professor know? Because that could put the creature in danger and she didn’t want to do that to any creature, no matter how big or strong or lethal. She supposed she had to answer, though. ”An Acromantula. They’re smart, strong, and when there’s one around, there’s usually more to come.”

Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!

Mamie nodded politely as Violet took a seat next to her, then the Jameses sat on the other side of Cecelia. She tried to think of what animal she wanted by her side in battle. She felt she shouldn't chose something mundane, because they were wizards, and choosing a magical animal might help her show the Neo-Alliance that yes, magic was better than no magic. Obviously.

She raised her hand. "I'd want a hippogriff," she said. "They're fierce and it could protect you, and they're kind of scary looking, so Muggles might be scared of them, too." Plus, you could ride hippogriffs and fly away. And flying was good. That, too.
