Charms 1: Going UP! Oh, it was EARLY. Piers had never been much of a morning person, but he had to at least pretend he was while he was at Hogwarts. He much preferred having his classes in the afternoon, but he had drawn the short end of the stick this term with a morning class. Yawning with a bit of a groan, Piers made his way to the Charms classroom to start the lesson. Tiredly, he shuffled his feet to the classroom door and opened it up, yawning AGAIN as he shuffled inside. CLANG. BANG. THUD. "OW. WHAT THE -" Immediately upon entering the room, Piers smashed his foot into something, tripped over the unknown object and then tumbled to the floor, crashing into MORE unknown objects on his way down. On the floor, Piers looked around to see what had caused him to trip and found..... chairs, desks, books and props strewn about the room. The desks were all out of their normal order, some sideways, some upside down. The chairs were all out of sorts, too - some upside down, some tossed on top of the askew desks. Piers sat up quickly and blinked, processing what he was seeing. The entire classroom had been ransacked??? But what..... who? And WHY. UGH. Class will officially begin in 24 hours! Class Progression: |
Claudine still resented Fuller-Thompson for stepping down as Slytherin Head of House well into the term. But as much as she resented that action, she still liked the man, you know. He was one of the best professors that had ever taught her. Maybe she wouldn’t be annoyed at him much longer. Maybe she would- Claudine halted in her tracks outside of the classroom and stared around. First she stared at Fuller-Thompson on the floor then, quickly stepping into the room and taking her time to avoid the mess. She continued staring at the furniture and how out of place they were. Um...what? “Professor? Did you injure yourself? Do you need a hand up?’’ Hopefully some other student would come along and help him because Claudine still wasn't comfortable with letting anyone invade her personal space. She was most likely to help right the furniture though… but first, she needed to make sure Fuller-Thompson wasn’t hurt. |
Much line Claudine, Aboli, too, had been looking forward to serving as prefect to Fuller-Thompson. HOWEVER, she had eventually made note that it had NOT been him that had chosen her once she had finished reading her little letter when it came over the summer. NO-HO! It had been Recard! She adored Professor/Healer Recard, of course, but she still gave Fuller-Thompson EYES every time she had his class. Had he noticed yet? She was about to give him a SIMILIAR look as she entered the classroom on this particular day, but immediately she was distracted by the array of MESS in here! "Professor! Are you all right?" she asked, ALSO stepping closer to him and offering him a hand - she was wearing gloves as usual, of course - and hopefully she'd be able to help him up. |
"What happened to this classroom?" Ashley stared. "And also are you good dude?" She would offer to help the professor up, but someone was already doing that. This class looked trashed. "Do you want me to help set the stuff up?" She started to reorder everything. Mostly desks and chairs. |
What in the world?! This was one way to teach cleaning charms. Was that what they were doing? The sight of Professor F-T on the floor said it wasn’t as simple as that and Cecelia sort of just stood there for a moment, looking around at the classroom and thinking it made her messy room at home look pretty good in comparison. It seemed like Claudine and Aboli had Fuller-Thompson covered, so without asking, Cece starting righting chairs and picking up books as she made her way through the wreckage. ”Probably best we all help,” She responded to the first year, gesturing to the amount of mess there was to clean. Though honestly, magic was going to make this whole straightening up thing much easier. |
Violet wandered groggily into the Charms classroom. She was not a morning person, and she had had a rough night, constantly waking up and then thinking about things and unable to go back to sleep. So she almost ran into the mess that was in the middle of the classroom. Chairs, tables, everything, all piled on top of each other and in disarray. She wondered if this was some new setup for todays lesson until she saw Professor Fuller-Thompson also on the floor and in disarray. No, obviously this wasn't planned; something very odd had happened. There were already some students helping the professor up, so Violet decided not to crowd in too. Instead, she wandered over to the furniture and began to try to unravel the chaos a little bit, along with a few other students. |
:'3 Charms class, what a joy to Curtis. Partial sarcasm, cause the class was fine for him to "Morning da...." Curtis blinked seeing him on the floor. Weird... usually everything's all tidied up. He saw Claudine, Abby, and others already at his dad's side. Welp, no reason for him to go over there too. He didn't think his dad was that weak to need everyone helping him up. A hint of a frown showed briefly on his face. Was he worried? Or disappointed at what he saw? Not that one had time to notice it before Curtis turned his face to the nearest desk, "Tergeo," Aiming his wand to get rid of some of the dust. |
Whoa, was Curtis' dad clumsy or what? Bernie peeked in behind the others, since they'd all arrived at about the same time, and elbowed her way in. "What a mess. What have the house elves been up to?!" Ignoring this room, huh? Bernie started pushing desks away from the door and then went about making sure each one had a chair to go with it. What. A. Mess!!! |
"Wow." Nem had slipped into the classroom not long after Grantham, taking stock of the classroom and all the helpful little Also because they didn't feel like righting Professor Weaksauce's classroom for him. |
Phoebe bounced through the door, keen to greet good ol' Professor Cheekbones, only to find him on the floor and the room totally run amuck. Chairs! Desks! Madness! What exactly was happening here? "Oh, Professor! Does Peeves have a vendetta against you?" She shoved the closest desk with her foot, scooting it generally unto place, and then she leaned over to push it into the right position. It was pretty lame mischief, as far as mischief went. "Should we just put the room to rights?" |
Avalon was so busy rifling through a stack of notes that she didn't realize the absolute destruction right in front of her. She had fallen asleep while studying the previous night and awakened to a mess of textbooks and parchment, with only a few minutes to spare before Charms. Scrambling to get to class on time, the Ravenclaw was organizing her papers as she walked. Until she walked straight into an overturned chair, stubbing her toe in the process. "OW!" Mouth agape, she looked around the room, perplexed. "What in Merlin happened here?" Avalon wondered aloud, immediately stuffing her notes into her bag. Professor Fuller-Thompson on the floor, tables turned upside-down, objects scattered everywhere. It was a strange sight this early in the morning. Avalon bent down to pick up the chair that she had run into. Were they supposed to clean things up, or was this all part of some crazy cleaning charm lesson the professor had planned? |
Adam was completely unaware that Piers had tripped and stumbled on his way into the classroom. By the time Adam arrived, a number of people were already there, surrounding him and checking on him and making sure he was ok. Instead, Adam was WAY more focused on all the clutter in the classroom. Surely this was something to do with the lesson? OOOOOH! They were finally going to learn cleaning charms, weren't they?! "Wow, can't wait to see what you've got planned for us with this big mess, Professor!" Adam said with a grin. What was he doing on the floor? Weird. |
.... ..... "I'm not helping to get this cleaned up." The Gryffindor First Year made her stance on the matter clear the MOMENT she walked into the Charms classroom and realized that they were either learning a cleaning charm, or someone had decided to mess with the professor. Maybe the second, if the Professor now on the floor was anything to go by. Emm weaved her way through her classmates until she found the chair she'd claimed for her own all these classes--someone had drawn a unicorn on the seat, making it super easy to recognize. Then she went stepping over or climbing under things until she found her desk. The 11 year old dragged it over to her chair then sat in all the chaos and looked patiently to the Professor. "Hello, Sir." She was ready for the lesson to begin. Whenever he and everyone else got themselves sorted, they could also be ready. |
Valencia made her way to the classroom wondering what the backup and commotion was. But she quickly figured that out as soon as she could see into it. "This place is a mess." she said with a frown. She carefully stepped over things and around the side, observing the ransacking around her. Was this a lesson on... cleaning? |
You know who wasn't tired? Kinsay Cassandra James, resident Gryffindor and morning person. In fact, mornings were her peak time. It's when she got the best work done and was the cheeriest and also when she had the most energy. Her energy battery usually drained .... Which to be fair, wasn't all that good. Spells were really hard and it hadn't helped that in the MOST vital week of her learning career she had been wandless. Everything since then has been an attempt at catching up. It made her sad, so they weren't going to talk about it, okay? Thanks. "Hi," she stepped into the room, but stopped almost immediately. Kizzy needed a moment to take it all in. Everything was overwhelming. Especially their classroom. It looked like the Muggle Studies classroom after the lesson about trash. With that in mind, Kinsay practiced precaution as she weaved her way through the chaotic classroom to find her desk. Hers was easy to find because it was the one next to Emm's. With her desk (though upside-down) located, but she next made the trek to drag a chair across the room. Only after she was properly (not properly) sitting with her feet on the seat and her bum balanced on the back of the chair, she raised her hand. "Professor? Are we declaring anarchy? Because I need to be on Emmerson's team. It's the rules." If he didn't believe her, she could probably get a Healer's note from Professor Recard that said so. She'd understand. |
Yawning tiredly as he entered the charms classroom it took Cole a few moments to take in the state of the classroom, and Professor Fuller-Thompson on the floor. Yikes, what happened here? The classroom was a right mess with chairs, desks and books strewn about upside down and sideways and just not how it should be at all. Pulling up his sleeves on his robes Cole got started on pushing desks back and righting chairs as he navigated himself closer to the professor’s side. Claudine, Aboli and Ashley we’re already offering the professor a hand up but Cole figured it was good to be close if some extra guy power was needed. "Sir, who has gone berserk in your classroom? It was Peeves surely, and not a student right?" It’d be easier to understand if it was just another Peeves prank. Pushing back a couple of desks and straightening a few more chairs back on their legs with sheer use of force. He’d use magic but Cole didn’t want to accidentally hit a fellow student. |
Valentina yawned as she dragged herself to charms, wishing she’d gotten something to eat because she was so hungry. But it was her fault for oversleeping.. she’d slept really late the night before, doing her homework because she did enjoy getting things done in the last minute. ..... BLINK blink. What was... happening?? Professor was on the floor, the classroom looked disordered, everyone looked confused... UHM?? Her eyes wide, she slowly made her way over to an empty chair and sat down. Did they have to clean this mess up? Because that would be terribly boring!! She carefully set her bag down and looked expectantly at the professor, her tummy grumbling a bit. SIGH. |
It was a typical morning on what Naya assumed would be a typical day. She entered the Charms classroom saying, “Good Morning Prof......” Oh!. This was not typical. The room was a mess. Everything was helter skelter and Naya couldn’t imagine why. Seeing Cole moving desks and chairs, she walked over to him. “Hey Cole, what happened here?” In the meantime, Naya started helping the rest of her classmates in putting the room back in order. She started by turning some desks right side up again. This was crazy.......and yet, this was Hogwarts so.........nothing should surprise her. |
Heath enjoyed charms class a lot more now that his spellwork was improving. He wandered down the hall and into the classroom, wondering what today’s lesson would have in store. “Good morning, Profes-” he began, but his voice trailed off as he noticed the man on the floor and several people crowded around him. “Slurping sarlaccs, what happened here?!” He was so distracted by the chaotic scene in front of him that he didn’t realize he made a reference nobody would understand until after he’d spoken. His dark eyes darted around the room in search of something to distract himself from his blunder, and it was only then that he saw the full scope of the damage… desks sideways, chairs overturned, books littering the floor. “I’ll, uh… get the books,” he mumbled to no one in particular; it seemed the thing to do, since several other students were already straightening the desks and chairs. Drawing his wand, he began levitating books off the floor and back into their place. This was charms class, so he might as well practice his spells while he tidied up. That, and one could never be too careful in this school! This mess was probably nothing - an introduction to a lesson on cleaning or maybe Peeves or a student playing a prank - but just in case this was something more sinister, he didn’t want to risk getting possessed, cursed, or Merlin knows what else by touching something! |
Crimalla stood nervously at the back of the crowd of concerned and confused students arriving to class. There were chairs thrown about everywhere, and from snippets of exclamations, she could tell that some sort of accident involving the professor had happened. Crimalla just stood there waiting for a cue on what she should do. She was just a first year, and surely her older peers were much better at healing magic and helping the professor with whatever had happened. |
Having finally located her missing wand after it went missing, Ivy hurried to Charms hoping she wasn’t late. When she got to the doorway, she noticed there seemed to be a pile up in the entrance to the classroom. Standing on her tiptoes, she tried to peer around the other students to see what was happening. She could hear a lot commotion on the other side like someone was scooting furniture around. Being small, she squeezed between the gaps people had left and finally made it through the crowd to see what was happening. ”Oh goodness...” she whispered. what was it Mamie had said in Divination? Unexpected things always happen at Hogwarts? Maybe this was one of those unexpected things. Based on the Professor’s position on the floor, she didn’t think the mess had been intentional. ”Professor... what happened? Who would do this?” she asked, concern in her face as she picked a damaged book up off the floor and showed it to him. |
Charms was actually a subject that Josh performed decently - probably because he was just SOooOOooOoo charming. Har har .... har. A boy could dream. He was rather eager to get to class today only to find that there was a crowd at the entrance to the classroom. Slowly his sprint to a stroll, the sixth year cautiously approached the group of his peers and overheard something about a mess, accusations towards Peeves, and something about the professor going berserk? Whatever it was, chaos had already struck and the lesson had not yet even begun! "Whatever happened here I just want to go on record saying that I didn't do it," he decided to point out with a wave of the arm and twirl of the finger. "It was just the one time!" |
Gemma was ready for class, she enjoyed charms and couldn't wait to learn all the things they would learn today. Bouncing her way to class she stopped at the door hearing everyone else she peered around the corner. "Woo" What happened in here. Then she saw it, she saw Curtis with his wand. "Morning Professor, if you are redecorating maybe you could ask mum for some help." Serioulsy |
Yoooooooooooooooooooooo. There was some STRAIGHT UP ANARCHY happening in Charms today. Kale felt his bones rattle. He was curious and a little excited. Was Charms today going to be some kind of event? Like jumping over all the things and using the piles as shelter?? He had questions. But, first, he addressed Fuller-Thompson with a grin, "Morning Professor." He waited all of two seconds before he asked his follow-up. "Is there some kind of scavenger hunt today?" |
"Good morning, Pro-" Mamie froze in the doorway of Charms class, midway through her greeting. What had happened? Was she late? Maybe they'd already started class and there was an accident? As she stood there for a moment, though, she realized that was not the case and that maybe she should help straighten up the classroom so that they could start. Yep, she should help. Mamie headed straight for one of the chairs that was on top of a desk and moved to pull it down without the chair falling on her. Putting desks and chairs back was much more exciting than picking up books from the floor, right? Wrestling with the chair, she managed to get it off the desk and onto the floor with a loud thud. Mayyybe she should switch to helping pick up the scattered books...that were more her size.... |
He entered the classroom with a big smile on his face, ready for a good class today, and was about to greet said Professor Fuller-Thompson when he gaped. No voice came out of his mouth as he just stared at the state of the classroom. Was this part of the lesson? He eyed his surroundings, wondering what or who would pop out? No. Maybe they were learning a cleaning charm? he wondered; however, the state of Professor Fuller-Thompson told him otherwise. Yiiiikes. This was not good. He noticed Aboli making a BEE line for the Professor which caused his right eyebrow to arch before he glanced around the room to see who else was here and what needed to be cleaned. Josh's comment was very much one to stand by. Yes. Yes. He'd back up his dormie on that. Wise words. Sighing, he decided to remain silent and focus on helping to clean up the classroom. |
Nova was super tired. She had been up all night studying, because OWL's, and was yawning her way into the classroom. She hadn't quite noticed the state of the room, nor the fact that the professor was sprawled out on the floor. She gave another rather large yawn, covering her mouth politely as she did so, before saying her usual greeting, "Good morning, Professor. Hope you are, oh...what in Merlin's beard happened here!?" She finally noticed the wreckage. It was an absolute mess. Was this the work of Peeves? It looked like something he would do! But who could know for sure? Most of the students had already started to clean up the mess by the time she had gotten into the classroom, but she found a desk and chair for herself, set them up right and put her bag on the chair, claiming it before anyone else could. She wasn't going to be without a seat, that was for sure. |
What....in Merlin's beard was going on here? Why was the classroom a mess, why was everyone standing around like they didn't have a lesson to be getting to and why were The Headmaster looked to the Charms man on the floor, before looking to the students again. If he wanted something done right, he would very well have to do it himself this time. Why did it always seem like something else at Hogwarts was breaking? Why were so many things breaking? Where was his break in this cursed placed? When it wasn't the students, it was the furniture. SPOILER!!: Replies The Headmaster turned to face the room of students, pleased at least some of the mess was now gone while being irritated at just how many of them he needed to push into action. "To whoever thought this would be a funny little stunt to be pulled off, I see. I may not know who you are now but I'll find out and you'll be sorry. Destruction of school property is strictly prohibited. As you can see, it costs us precious time that could otherwise be spent learning. In such an important class, you cannot afford to waste time like this." Time wasters, that's exactly what the majority of them were. "Once you've righted the room, have a seat, we're going to begin." Was Piers in a position to do so? He didn't know. Surely the man would've gotten up if he could. Nevertheless, the Headmaster was here to help. With a flick of his wand, the door to the Charms classroom slammed shut with a loud, satisfying BANG. Ah. That was better. He moved to the front of the room where he found the Professor's lesson plan sitting atop the desk. He gave it a quick once over to be sure he knew what was going on before turning to look at the room of complacent children once more. "Now then, get your books and parchment out and be sure to take notes. I have a question. When would you ever need to use the cham "Ascendio"? Personal experience, or any scenario you can think of. When would this become the one spell you think would get the job done adequately?" OOC: Hello friends. No, you're not lost, this is indeed Charms class! This is the first OOC class of the term but remember it wouldn't be the first IC. The Headmaster will be stepping in to lend a hand and the first question is up. This class should be moved again in another 28ish hrs. And remember, even thought Trent might not appreciate them, I do enjoy me a good silly answer. :lmao: |
Once they had finished cleaning up, Ashley grumpily sat down in her seat. Nothing like the headmaster to put her in a bad mood. "If you were drowning, then you could get your head above the water." At least this spell could have something to do with water. Ashley loved water. She glanced at the drawings on her arms, not daring to take out some markers. |
EEEEEEEP! Ivy immediately regretted opening her mouth when the Headmaster walked in. When he spoke directly to her, she made a movement like she’d almost been hit, fumbling the book in her hands so it thudded back the ground. Not good. Nooooooot good. When he gave them all instructions to tidy the room and find a seat, she gave an overly eager, ”Yes sir!” that she was terrified had come across as sarcastic, but she had really meant it! She would have even saluted him if he’d asked! She hurried around the room picking up various books and righting the tipped chairs. Some of the older kids used their wands, and she couldn’t help but be envious of them. Magic would have made this much faster. And less sweaty... Her heart beating like she’d just run several miles, sweat beading on her brow, Ivy finally took a seat near the middle but off to one side where the Headmaster was least likely to make eye contact with her. She took out her parchment and quill, dipped it in ink, and sat with rapt attention so as to not draw more attention to herself. When others began answering the Headmaster’s question, she began jotting down notes. Someone said you could use it to propel yourself up toward the surface when under water, but that wasn’t what Ivy thought the spell was used for... maybe she was wrong but... ”Professor, I thought it could be used to reveal, like, a staircase? Like our attic is in our ceiling, and my mom usually just pulls the cord to open it and pull the staircase down, but... but couldn’t you use Ascendio?” she asked, feeling more unsure of herself with every word. |

"Well, it shoots you up in the air, doesn't it--I mean, that could hurt you coming down again, but you could use it to avoid drowning, couldn't you? Wasn't Harry Potter said to have used that in that Tri-Wizard Tournament all those years ago? Or I guess you could use it to escape from a pack of wolves if you were surrounded." Violet seemed to remember a distant relative having done that, though she may have remembered the story wrong. |
Aboli glowered at Headmaster Trent. "Sir, I think human lives are more important than property. So...I was trying to help him. But - " she began to flick her wand, muttering whatever incantations she could to start the process of cleaning up the classroom. And then...they were starting class?! Professor FT did NOT seem well at all! Was he not even going to CHECK on his colleague?! Aboli DID have a seat, but she kept glancing at Professor Fuller-Thompson worriedly. She was in INNER TURMOIL OK? Should she irritate Trent further by making sure he was ok? Should she just shutup and keep the class going? She COULD...do both at once, right? She raised her hand. "Ascendio would be good for if you need to clean a ceiling fan." She nodded. It was a very serious answer. "It might also be helpful if we...help Professor Fuller-Thompson, Headmaster Trent. He doesn't seem WELL." Especially if he was still ON THE GROUND. |
Yeah, obviously Bernie had shown initiative here. She'd shoved, what, two desks around by now? One for her and one for her bff.... oh never mind. Bernadette O. Grantham did not have a BFF. Not anymore. :( Anyway, uhhhhhhhhhh what was the Headmaster doing here? Taking over for Fuller? "Why aren't cleaning fairies a thing," she mumbled to herself as she threw herself into one of the desks she'd shoved into place. Bernie half slumped in it, half threw a hand in the air. "You could use that spell to, I dunno, hoist an anchor up to your magical yacht that you sail around the Hogwarts lake on?" For some reason, she could see Fuller-Thompson AND Trent hanging out on that yacht. Look at the Charms professor, just lounging on the ground still. "OH, are we meant to be using that charm on HIM, Headmaster? To help him UP?" Well?! He was, like, elderly. |
It seemed that she didn’t have to worry about the classroom as other students had that under control. In any case, her main concern was Fuller-Thompson. Yet there was no need for her to even do that. Not when the Headmaster was around. Claudine glowered when he entered the classroom then proceeded to tell her off. In addition to being mad about him being here, she also felt her headspace become clogged and she immediately felt stressed. The negative effect this adult had on her was like no other. Without a word, the girl turned and walked away and helped to help right the classroom, using magic to do so. Through it all, she heard snatches of Trent’s response to the others. It amazed her that a Headmaster could speak to his students in that way. Once Claudine decided she had helped enough, Claudine took a seat at the very back of the classroom. She resisted the urge to snort when Trent ordered them to take notes. Did he really think they didn’t know how to attend lessons properly? The Slytherin raised her hand after a while. “If there is a kneazle stuck in a tree, we can use that spell on ourselves to reach the kneazle.” Could Trent just leave now? Or was he making it a thing to bully the other professors as well? |
............... But she had-her limbs worked just-HMPH! Cecelia was really truly starting to dislike the headmaster which was a SHAME because he'd pretty much been her favorite before this term. She still didn't understand the change in him and she STILL wanted to figure it out, but for now she just frowned and CONTINUED helping to get the room in order, shooting looks at Professor F-T in hopes that he'd get up and take over and make the bigger Trent LEAVE. She'd found her seat, and she was tempted to just ignore the question because she was still feeling kind of grumbly from before, but Cecelia couldn't stop the words from tumbling from her mouth. It was always this way when she had an idea in her head. "If you're caught somewhere you can't simply climb out of, like down a well or something, it'd be a good idea to have that spell in your repertoire." |
Mamie had picked up two whole books when the Headmaster walked into the room. She did a double-take. This was Charms class! How did he know the classroom was a mess? Maybe--and this was not something Mamie would ever suggest out loud, not with the man in the room--maaaaybe the Headmaster had trashed their classroom! Defense Class wasn't enough for him and he wanted to take over charms as well--well, that really didn't seem right. Not with how upset he seemed to be at the state of the room. Mamie quietly picked up a few more books and struggled to right another desk/chair combination to seat herself in for the class. She frowned when Trent started...started teaching? Was their Thompson-Fuller or Fuller-Thompson OK? Shouldn't they help him to the infirmary if he was unable to teach class? She didn't know what Ascendio did, but she got the gist from her classmate's answers. It seemed handy for someone short. Or rather, for someone who was not yet tall. She raised her hand. "Pro-pro...Headmaster..." she switched labels mid-word. "You could use...A-As-Ascendio to put something on a shelf so your brother can't reach it!" She frowned. Didn't Wingardium Leviosa do the same thing? She waved her hand in the air again. "Headmaster, when would you choose Ascendio over Wingardium Leviosa? They do...sorta the same thing, right?" |
Phoebe was scowling from the moment the Headman showed up, and it doubled down when he spoke so sharply to her. And then he spoke to Kizzy, and she found herself reaching for her wand. Okaaaaay, nope. Best not hex the Headmaster for being a jerk. BUT she couldn't help but speak up. Just a little bit. "Sorry, siiiiiir, but if the Professor had the room set a certain way for the lesson, I didn't want to undo it without permission." Because if she wasn't supposed to touch the furniture, she would get into even more trouble. Grrr. Kale was 100% right about whatever he said about his father. No matter how RUDE, he was right. "Maybe you can use it to reach a book on a very high shelf in the library. Just zooooom right up in the air to grab it." |
>;3 Get out Merlin's soiled trousers was Curtis ever in the right with the Headmaster? He actually was being helpful for once and was then told to get out. He could just about laugh at this when he turned to get the real reason why he was getting kicked out. Oh, of course. The Headmaster was pickier than his Papa Javy over cleanliness. "I missed you too, Headmaster. Thank you for reminding me to look good." He turned to walk out, whilst pushing the untuck part of his shirt in his pants before going out the door to fix his tie. Which didn't take long at all. He didn't have a mirror at hand so he did what he could off memory on retying it properly. Then he smoothed out some of the wrinkles of his shirt before stopping. That should be good enough. If it wasn't good enough, oh well, Curtis could find other ways to spend his time out of this class. Was his Daddy alright? Guess he couldn't tell since now they were told to leave him alone. Walking back in, Curtis raised his arms a bit to showcase his tucked in shirt and all. Am I good or....? He waited a bit before going back to casting Tergeo on the dust and dirt. He would move the chairs but you know, others beat him to it, and he didn't want his precious uniform messed up again. That's what he did, cleaning up the dirt and dust until it was time to get the materials required and the first question. "Well, if Ascendio can shoot you up in the air high enough, I imagine it'd be good for getting up onto the roofs. Maybe relax on top of the Hogwarts Castle or to help fix the roofs." It sounded good enough for Curtis. Maybe he could try it out himself. Maybe. Insert cheeky grin. |
Okay but how was Valencia to know that the lesson wasn't on cleaning the classroom? One usually wasn't allowed to touch object lessons ahead of time. She picked up the closest desk and set it and a chair upright before using her wand to clean the debris around her. She then took her seat and got out her books and parchment as instructed. She momentarily glanced at the fallen Professor. Err. Cool. Just leave him there then. She raised her hand. "Since it tends to be a more forceful spell, I'd say it's the most useful in situations where you need to get up quickly. For instance, if you needed to escape up a tree or onto a balcony." Not that that would come in handy often. Despite what some Gryffindors said, the floor was not lava. |
When the headmaster walked into the room and told her to keep cleaning instead of worrying about a seat, it took her everything to not roll her eyes at him. Instead she gave him an annoyed grin and replied, "Yes, headmaster, sir." Then she turned around and picked up another desk and another chair. There was literally nothing else she could do, everyone else had cleaned up. The next thing she knew the headmaster was starting the lesson. With a sigh, she quickly took her seat and pulled out her quill and parchment. Thinking for a moment, Nova quickly raised her hand and when called on, replied, "Well, you could use it when you need to quickly get away from something or someone." That spell could have come in handy when she was younger at the children's home, but she wasn't going to say that out loud. |
Heath inwardly groaned at the sound of an all too familiar reprimanding voice. For the record, he did not like the way the headmaster was treating his classmates, especially the two Gryffindor girls he insulted (Cece & Phoebe) and the one he upended onto the floor (Emm), though he wasn’t about to let him know that. He may be a lot of things, but stupid wasn’t one of them! Heath’s face remained impassive as he continued levitating books back into their place. He braced for the barrage of harsh words sure to come his way, but none came. Instead, he looked up just long enough to see the nod the headmaster gave him. Well, this was weird! Who would’ve guessed he’d be one of the few not being berated in front of everyone?! But there was no time to think about it now! As soon as the last book was back in its place, Heath beelined for the back of the room and took a seat next to Claudine. He had just enough time to take out his quill and parchment before the door banged shut, and he looked to the front of the room. Blink, blink. Wait, why was Headmaster Trent asking the first question? Was Professor Fuller-Thompson too injured to teach his own class? Heath was worried for the charms professor, but he was careful not to let any emotion show on his face as he considered the question. The first scenario Heath thought of was saving oneself from drowning, as Harry Potter had done in the Triwizard Tournament over a hundred years ago, but that was already said. It didn’t need repeating, and besides, what were the odds that one would happen to have their wand handy while drowning? Every other answer he came up with also presented a drawback. Honestly, it was rather exhausting trying to anticipate all the ways the headmaster could shoot down his answers! Part of him wanted to just keep quiet, but he knew that if this was anything like DADA, he’d get assigned an essay for doing so. Forget it, he thought. He’s going to find fault, no matter what I say… As Heath thought, his mind kept going back to the drowning scenario, and that gave him an idea! His hand went up, and he said, “If you were sinking into quicksand or some other dangerous substance, you could use Ascendio to get yourself out.” |
Of course she knew someone had made a mess. That was obvious. Avalon had only asked what happened because she wanted to know why someone made that mess. Trying not to roll her eyes at Headmaster Trent's rude response, she helped pick up a few more littered items and took a seat, after flipping one more desk upright. Wait, Trent was going to teach the lesson now? Well, there went all hope of a semi-enjoyable class. He seemed to be in a horrible mood as usual. "If you need to get up onto a steep surface quickly, you could use Ascendio," Avalon added after raising her hand. "Like a cliff or a big step. Especially if you're running from someone. It could save you time and energy." They weren't in Defense Against the Dark Arts, but perhaps Trent would appreciate her defensive thinking. Or maybe he'd just assign her another essay or give her detention. You never knew with that man. |
UGH, UGH, UGH Where did he come from? They were just going to have fun and now he was kicking Curtis out? This wasn't at all how she though Charms was going to go and if headboss was teaching could they sneak out? Gemma looked around to see if maybe some did, but it didn't look like it so she just sighed and started helping pick up some items here and there. "Maybe grownups use it to lift students that are not being very good. It is a stronger spell so probably works for human weight better, though I agree with asking the question about why use it instead of Wingardium Leviosa, I mean that can lift heavy things too." Could they just use those charms to lift this furniture right now? |
Naya was busy picking up turned over desks when she heard a voice she wasn’t expecting. Turning around, she was surprised to see the Headmaster. Why was he in Charms class? Oh and he was in rare form, as seemed to be the norm for him these days. Things were just getting stranger and stranger. Once Naya was finished, she did as she was told and sat down. Class, it seemed, had begun and it was the Headmaster who was getting things started with a question. The Gryffindor did not have an answer that immediately came to mind. However, she was determined to come up with something. She was not losing points for not answering the Headmaster’s question. After what seemed like an eternity, she thought of something and raised her hand. “If you fell down a hill or into a ditch and injured yourself, you could use Ascendio to get yourself back to a safer area on flat ground.” Well it wasn’t the best answer ever, but it was something. |
Adding Emm at the top just to avoid double posting Wha....how...who.... How rude. Emmerson picked herself up off the ground and began dusting herself off indignantly. WHO thought it was okay to TOSS HER like that? She wasn't a sack of potatoes and could've been hurt!! The little lion spun once she was dusted, ready to tell off whoever it might have been...when she saw the forever grumpy Headmaster. What was he doing here? This wasn't his class. He couldn't tell them what to do and he couldn't tell Kizzy where to sit. Except...while everyone began cleaning....and even when they sat down....Professor Charms Man didn't make him leave. Emm shot the professor worried looks, not because she was concerned about his fall but because she worried he'd really let Headmaster Trent come and Unfortunately, it seemed like it was really happening. Emmerson sank down into her seat with a sullen look about her face. She thought about not answering, so he'd REALLY see her discontent but....the kid had a lot of homework....and didn't need a 1,500 word essay added to that AT ALL so...."When you wanna ride a dragon but it's too high up in the sky so you shoot yourself up there." Did it matter to him that they were not happy to see him? Not. Hardly. The Headmaster did not care one way or the other about their opinions and was quite content within his own approval. Happy or not, they would learn in class today. SPOILER!!: Replies "Based on several of the responses I've seen, I think it important to make a few distinctions. The first, "ascendio" is used on yourself. This charm propels the caster upward. Should you wish to list something else, you can use the levitating charm. This, I hope, erases the question of when you use which." They were very different spells. "With this charm, you have to be mindful of your surroundings. Where will you land? Is there anything to break your fall? Is the place you'll land safe? You'll also need to consider the amount of force you use. Too much and you could hurt yourself worse than whatever danger you originally faced. Too little and you'll still be in trouble." Clear? Clear. They were moving on. "Before we get to any practice, I have another question for you. Listen carefully, I don't want you misunderstanding. Let's say you were being chased. You're being chased by a wild creature intent on making you its next meal. It gets you to the foot of a cliff with a dead end but even with the charm, it's too high for you to get to the ledge at the top. You have only two charms you can use. Alarte Ascendare, or Ascendio. Which do you use and why? I'm not asking what each spell does, I'm not asking for the difference. I'm asking what strategy you're trying to employ with whichever spell you choose to use." OOC: Question 2 is uuupppp!! It's a question of strategy mostly. The Headmaster would like to know what your character would ultimately choose to do to save themselves in the scenario outlined. I'll be back to move us again in another 24-28 hrs ^_^ |
Forgive her. She’s an only child... Ivy winced again when the Headmaster told her she was so, so very wrong. Why was he being so m-m-m-meeeeaaaan? That was it, she decided right on the spot she hated it here. She absolutely hated it, and she was going to write to her mom and tell her she wanted to come home. How could her father have loved it here so much? It was dreadful. She practically died like every other day, it didn’t seem like anyone even cared about her here, and now the headmaster was yelling at her for not knowing something they’d never even learned about! Maybe she wasn’t cut out for this magic stuff. Maybe she was better off living as a Muggle like her mom had had to do... She felt tears stinging her eyes and quickly wiped them away with the back of her hand. As she watched and listened to the professor, Ivy just became more and more horrified. Were they actually going to use this charm on themselves? Surely not, surely that was much too dangerous for a first year to do... but no, she could tell that was what he meant for them to do. When he asked his next question and stared them all down, she could tell he meant for each of them to provide an answer, and however reluctant she was to open her mouth and be yelled at again, Ivy also didn’t want to lose her house any points for not answering. Staring at the Headmaster’s shoes, she raised a shaking hand to provide her answer, ”M-m-m-maybe both?” she croaked out, her voice suddenly feeling very restricted in her throat. ”Could you - could use Alarte Ascendare on the monster, then use Ascendio to get on TOP of the monster, then use Ascendio again really fast to get to the top of the cliff?” That was probably the wrong answer... she was probably going to get yelled at... again. |
For the record, Ashley had not got it from the textbook. As if she would read extra in a textbook. But the headmaster wasn't mad at her, so that was a win. "I would use Alarte Ascendare on the animal and then run in the other direction and hope it gets hurt on the way down." Actually, she would try to explode it, but if she had to pick between ascendio and alarte ascendare, she would use the latter.better to be on solid footing than hanging off a cliffside. |
Mamie raised her hand. "Can the wild creature fly? If it can fly, I'd use the Alarte Ascendare and then run away, like Ashley, otherwise it'd just fly after me and eat me in the air," she said. "But but if it can't fly, then I'd use the Ascendio and hope to grab some hand holds on the way down like a rock climber and then maybe climb to the top of the cliff or use Ascendio again, or hope I land on the creature and hurt it more than I hurt myself!" It sounded like a lose-lose situation, to be honest. She frowned, thinking it through a bit more. "Or! Or or or I could use Ascendio just a little, so I can grab onto the cliff just out of reach of the creature, and wait for it to go away!" There were only two spells in the scenario, but an awful lot of options in Mamie's opinion. Though that last one was really more of a subtlety from her original idea. If she couldn't get all the way to the top, she really just needed somewhere safe until the creature got bored. Hopefully she'd never be in the situation Trent described, especially if this wild creature could fly like a hippogriff or a dragon. She hoped she'd never meet a dragon. |
:'3 Curtis was only partially paying attention since he was totally not worried about Professor Dad in the corner. He had to be a good student after all and merely blink at the rest of the answers. He didn't care if he was right or wrong in that moment, he just wanted to get the boring questions over with. "Well, I'd use Alarte Ascendare to get it in the air and then use Wingardium Leviosa before the monster could get down anywhere near me. Then just send the monster off the cliff. It's trying to kill me, so I wouldn't want it to get a second chance at me before I can escape." Curtis said simply. His Papa would be disappointed at this answer but hey, it's life or death. Besides, as the Professor put it if he used Ascendio he'd have to worry about overshooting or landing properly so he had no broken bones. |
Aboli knew Trent would give a response similar to what he HAD responded to her, and so she wasn't surprised and actually managed to remain passive. She was beyond getting angry over his obscene MEANNESS. She DID keep looking over at the Charms professor, though, to make sure he was still BREATHING and all. Aboli ALSO wasn't keen on answering anymore of his questions so....she remained quiet and took notes as other people answered. Her classmates were quite creative, weren't they? She glanced at Curtis as he arrived back and tried to give him a reassuring look. |
Seneca offers powerful insights into the art of living. He observed, “It is not that we have so little time but that we lose so much. … The life we receive is not short but we make it so; we are not ill provided but use what we have wastefully.” Quote:
Quote:
"I agree with Ashley--of the two charms available, I'd use Alarte Ascendare and use the time the creature was in the air to escape from the dead end and run as fast as I could in the other direction. It's not a good choice, but I think it's better than the other one." |
Of course Claudine had known that she could over shoot her target, just as she knew that a few other students would based on their answers. Still, she was done making an effort in anything Trent teached. At least on the theory part. She’d just give him stupid answers despite knowing different. Spellwork though? She’d work hard at that because that was for her own benefit. Claudine said nothing further as she proceeded to make her notes. Who knew but if she didn’t, she might be thrown into detention. As for that strategy question? Claudine didn’t even bother answering it. Instead, her sharp response was directed at that know-it-all first year Ravenclaw Ashley, Mamie, Ivy and Curtis. “The Headmaster never said it was a monster. It’s a wild creature and killing or injuring it should not be a first option, regardless of the circumstances.’’ She glared at the four of them, even though the only of the foursome she really liked was Curtis. But he wasn't a first year. Honestly, shouldn't his answer be better? “And what if your bright ideas fail? Wouldn’t that aggravate the hungry creature further?” Was her love for creatures showing more than ever now? Yes, it was. “Alarte Ascendare and Ascendio are not the only two spells in the real world. There are others that can be used and better escape plans.’’ Right. She’d shut up now. |
Okay, one quesiton in and Avalon hadn't gotten detention or an essay assignment yet. That was a good sign, at least. Trent didn't seem to totally hate her answer. But she was a little miffed that he seemed to be turning Charms into another Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson. "If the ledge was too high for either of these charms, I'd use Alarte Ascendare to launch the creature into the air. It'd at least buy me a few seconds to think of my next move." Although it was highly unlikely that she'd ever be in a situation where she could only use those two spells. The Ravenclaw had to appreciate Claudine's bravery in pointing that out. "No use in using Ascendio, since you couldn't reach the ledge with it. It could just provoke the creature even more." As for what she'd do after she sent the creature flying? No idea. Probably run away or try to hide. |
Carsyn was confused to say the least, which she shouldn't really have expected it having now been at Hogwarts for six years. Regardless surprises still seemed to find themselves around every corner. Starting first and foremost with Professor Fuller-Thompson on the floor - unconscious? - and Headmaster Trent was filling in?? Why wasn't the Healer called? Wasn't that her job to help resuscitate the unconscious? Or was this, as some younger kid pointed out, all part of the plan of the lesson? When would she need to use the spell ascendio? If she needed to hide something was one thought that crossed her mind. Why was everyone always thinking they were going to be in danger all the time? Oh right, probably because this was Hogwarts and danger seemed to be engrained in the walls of the school. Moving on though, two charms to use.... Not asking for the difference, but wouldn't the difference employ answer and the strategy??? That made no sense, Headmaster, because well, in order to understand and know which spell to use you would NEED to know the difference. "Ascendio. On yourself. Because Alarte Ascendare is best used on objects. Assuming, that as she mentioned that the creature can't fly," Carsyn inclined her head at the younger girl. "Get to the top of the cliff and hope for the best. Although if summoning charms were able, I'd probably say summoning a broomstick or apparating out would increase your chances for survival since you'd have more control." But .... they weren't options, apparently in this 'set scenario'. |
This dude was SO irrational and so unpleasant, and not at all the Headmaster that Phoebe had come to know and adore. Like it took a lot to lose the eternal love of Phoebe James, and this guy had done it. She crossed her arms and seated herself at her desk, refusing to take notes on his stupid 'a wild animal is chasing you in the woods'. It was a trick question. It was always a trick question. "We know we're going to just die already, sir. We always are going to die because we're so STUPID and IMPOSSIBLE and how do you ever put up with us?" |
Valencia knew that the spell required control. That's why she gave the answer that she gave. Then there was another hypothetical. A rather dark one actually. Did the Headmaster seriously expect them all to be some sort of dark adventurers? Between this question and his own lesson she was wonder if the Headmaster was aware of other potential far less deadly normal careers. Valencia, for example, wanted to study magical theory -- specifically the history and evolution of all sorts of spells. She did have an answer for this question though. "I'd also use Alarte Ascendare to disorient" Which, isn't what she'd actually do in the situation. Flinging anything, whether it be herself or the creature was not useful. |
>;3 (he absolutely insisted on another reply) Quote:
Curtis didn't like to make it known when he felt the eyes on someone on him. Especially the hot Slytherin Prefect who was a little cuckoo in his eyes, but in a good way. He liked her. So he had winked at her when she gave what he took as approval. Should he owl her after this? Probably. But until then... Curtis wasn't surprised to hear someone disagree with his answer, though he was slightly by the tone in Claudine. It made him raise his brow. Huh, and I thought she was the chill one. His face remained expressionless. "No, but he didn't say which type of dark creature it is. For all I know it could be a Manticore one of the most dangerous beasts to walk the earth. I'm sure the Headmaster wouldn't mind if I was being sacrificed by it but I wouldn't be thinking of it anymore than a Monster when it's about to eat me or push me off the cliff." Quite simple, really. Curtis actually now had her full attention. Forget the Headmaster, he was now intrigued on his friend's high defense for this hypothetical creature. |
Kinsay didn’t mind cleaning, but she did mind sitting far away from her best friend. That’s not fair those rules only applied in Defense Against the Dark Arts! This was Charms! Before she could even manage a frown, however, her chair was being turned up. Hey! She almost fell off right away (due to her own refusal to sit properly), but fortunately she slid onto the seat instead. Then she fell. She’d have bruised knees tomorrow, probably. Nothing new. She pouted as she worked to tidy up the classroom, shot Emm a sad look, and then dragged her chair to the otherside of the room. But she was NOT happy about it. Let the record show. Headmaster was a horrible, horrible man. The worst Kinsay’s ever known. Still, she didn’t want to write another essay, so she raised her hand with some reluctance. ”I’d use Ascendio on myself like a jumping bean. If you can make the creature laugh, it won't eat you.” Those were the rules. A laughing creature was a happy creature. Kinsay also knew that most dangerous creatures were just misunderstood. Everyone thought sharks were scary and evil, but they wouldn't actually eat you. They're not as dangerous as everyone else makes them out to be. They just get scared because they think you'll hurt them. So the genius way to approach this scenario is to make sure the creature knew you weren't going to hurt them. Laughter was good for that. |
Heath was prepared to be berated for his answer, but thankfully, the headmaster’s response wasn’t as insulting or condescending as he feared. He listened intently, jotting down the information about Ascendio in his notes. It sounded awfully unpredictable to him; he didn’t think he’d want to use it on himself! He’d just finished writing when Trent asked the next question… a strategy question. Ugh! Heath always hated those, even before the headmaster’s face-heel turn! Not only did he have to come up with a strategy for the hypothetical situation itself, but he had to also think of another strategy to avoid Trent’s disapproval… gauge the man’s reactions and try to guess the answer he wanted to hear. Even so, it seemed like nothing he said for this type of question was ever right! Heath considered the scenario carefully. Based on what Headmaster Trent said earlier, it seemed like Ascendio would do more harm than good in this case. It only worked on the caster, and there was no telling where he might land! Come to think of it, using either spell on himself would be useless in this scenario, as the headmaster said the cliff was too high to reach with the charm, so that left… the creature. He could use Alarte Ascendare to launch the creature into the air - no, wait! What if he used that spell not once, but several times in rapid succession? One spell might not buy him enough time to escape, but several spells could make the creature too disoriented to follow him when it landed… For the first time in a very long time, Heath was genuinely confident in his answer to one of Headmaster Trent’s questions, but that confidence vanished upon hearing Claudine’s response to the other students who’d suggested using a spell on the creature. Would she snap at him too? Probably so, as he’d be suggesting using not one, but several spells on it… There was no way in Hoth that he could give that answer now! Headmaster Trent’s disapproval would discourage him, but Claudine’s would devastate him, so much so that he wouldn’t be able to concentrate on anything else… which would only land him (possibly her too) in trouble. Unable to think of another answer that would placate everyone involved, he kept silent, resigned to the reprimand and essay that were about to come his way. |
Crimalla's eyes stung when the Headmaster chastised her for not helping with the cleaning. She looked down at the floor so no one could see the tears in her eyes. They were tears of humiliation, not sadness. Keeping her eyes looking down at the floor, she went over and began standing chairs up. When at last this was done, she sat down in her seat and didn't even answer the first question when asked. There were so many other students answering that it seemed she got away with not answering. It was not until the Headmaster began answering everyone's replies that the raven managed to get a grip on herself. But so lost in her own was she that she wasn't paying attention when the Headmaster explained the difference between the two charms. And now he was asking another question, and she had no idea what the proper answer was or even how to begin trying to figure it out. And yet, she couldn't dare risk being silent for two questions in a row. What if he called her out again?! Her hand shot into the air and, swallowing nervously, she forced herself to make up an answer to try and make it seem like she knew what she was talking about. "I would use Alarte Ascendare because the creature would be very close to me and I'd be able to make it bounce into the air. Then I would run back the way I came and the creature would fall off the cliff." She cringed. |
Soooo was it wrong that Cecelia was still hoping for their ACTUAL Charms professor to take over here? Because she still was, even though it was looking a lot like there was no chance of that today. SIGH. She didn't like having a nervous tummy before answering and she did have one now. Headmaster Trent was in a MOOD. "I'm with my classmates, Sir. I'd used Alarte Ascendare to send the creature up, up, and away. Even if it came back down, I'd have some time to put some distance between me and it, whatever it was." |
Was it just her, or was the Headmaster acting weird? Whitney didn't remember him acting.....well, like this before. Sure, he could be stern, but this was so far beyond that. And this was her thinking that. "Okay, first off, who would be stupid enough to get themselves in that situation? Second, can the creature in question fly? Because neither spell would be very useful if the creature can just fly after you." Duh. Plus, there were soooo many things a person in that situation could've done before that that would've prevented them from getting in that situation in the first place. Like avoiding the creature entirely. |
Oh... so Bernie had kinda been mixing these spells up, huh? Fun fun. Well now that she could tell them apart, she raised her hand to answer. "There are better, more effective spells for something like that, sir." Wasn’t that what he had just said to her? Heh heh heh. Bernie tried not to smirk too much. The Headmaster always LOVED it when she got snarky with him. "But for the record, Alarte Ascendare does work GREAT on anything. I'd smash that creature's brains on the ledge. If, hypothetically, I wasn't allowed to use a better spell." Wasn't this the spell she'd used to make apples explode on Claudine and Blake way back when??! It totally was. |
Sorry for the delay guys It took a lot of effort not to roll her eyes at the Headmaster. The dragon wouldn't be trying to eat her. Obviously. They would be friends. The dragon would give her a ride. They would play together. That was the obvious reason for her wanting to shoot into the sky to meet it. Dumb. Their Headmaster was dumb on top of being mean. Just look how sad he made Kizzy. Again, the little girl considered not answering but again she thought of the 1,500 word essay and just how much she was uninterested in getting it done. Ugh. Professor Fuller-Thompson needed to take his class back. She wasn't feeling like being very exceptional today and Trent gave them very little choice whenever he was around. Slowly, her hand rose. Emm was in no hurry to get her answer in and could wait for the others to speak. "Alarte ascendare. If you shoot it up into the air enough, it'll realize you aren't worth all that effort and go find someone else--if it survives going splat so many times anyway." SPOILER!!: Replies "I don't want to waste too much time on this but I will remind you all that when I ask questions, I expect an answer." BHe meant it. He wouldn't spend time on it so the man was already ready to move on but it was something that needed to be said. "Secondly, when you answer, don't waste my time coming up with separate scenarios. Answer what I've given. Keep your answer within the scope of what I've said. I don't need the unnecessary comments on the practicality of the question or whether you think there are better spells." Looking at some of you specifically. "Now let's get some work down." With a flick of his wand, the incantation appeared on the board for all to see. Quote:
Glancing down at the lesson plan once more, the Headmaster grunted. This would never do. The man shut the book. With another flick of his wand, the ceiling rose higher. He conjured a few keys with fluttering wings. They flapped about at different heights. On the floor were a few baskets. Enough for everyone. "Those are keys. That thing at the top is the ceiling. I don't recommend hitting it on your way up to catch the keys but you may ultimately do what you want." The Healer could be put on standby. "I've mentioned it does require intent and control. This activity will help you hone that before we move on to the main stage. Take a basket and put your name on it then get catching. Work alone, or in pairs. I don't care." Should he tell them the keys were a bunch of slippery devils? They'd figure it out soon enough. OOC: Mini activity is up!! There are keys flying around at different heights in the room. You may choose how high the one you go after is and whether you miss or not. They don't stay still and will be zipping around. Imagine a slightly slower version of a snitch. They go still once you get them into the baskets. Lemme know if you have any questions. We'll move on to the main in 48-72 hrs approx. |
Aboli rolled her eyes at Curtis' wink, and if he DID try to come on to her after class she'd remind him that he needed to properly learn her name if she were to ever take him seriously. Merlin. Another essay was on the horizon, it seemed, though, and she simply nodded. "Of course, sir," was her curt reply to his instructions. She'd be a prolific writer by the end of the term, at least. She wasn't even mad at him by this point, more done. Whatever he threw her way, she wasn't phased. The activity seemed kind of interesting. She only wished it were Professor FT and not Trent. Her eyes squinted up at the keys, and she put her notebook away for now. She HAD been taking good notes, after all. It was odd that pointing upward...sent them upward, since the spell actually propelled them using force from BELOW. Pointing upward just didn't make sense to her, but whatever. When she made up her own spells she could do what she wanted, sooOooo.... She pointed upward and cleared her throat before saying, "ASCENDIO!" WAAAAH. Aboli had NOT known it would be that uncontrollable. She luckily had chosen not to go after a key for this first time and was glad once her feet hit the ground. MERLIN. "I...did not enjoy that at all," she muttered to herself, flattening and straightening her skirt as she glanced around. |
Anyone want to play with Ivy? Listening as other students answered around her, Ivy was SHOCKED at the way some of the students spoke to the Headmaster. Weren’t they afraid of getting detention? The Headmaster hadn’t LOVED her answer, sure, but at least she had answered and avoided a 1500 word essay. That was A LOT of words. When one of the older girls yelled at her about the monster not being a monster, Ivy gave her a confused look. She could have sworn that the Headmaster had said it was a monster. It certainly SOUNDED like a monster. But she didn’t dare say anything back to the girl. They were in class, after all, and talking out of turn would get them in trouble. Turning her attention back to the Headmaster, she listened as he told them the correct answer and then gave instructions on what they were to do. Looking up at the keys, she felt her stomach churning. She... was supposed to go... up there? GULP. ”ah-SEN-dee-oh...” she practiced out loud without taking her wand. ”ah-SEN-dee-oh. Ah-SEEEEEEEEN-dee-oh. Ah-SEN-dee-ooooooh.” Knots in her stomach, she glanced around to see what other students were doing, taking a peak at the Headmaster as well. How long could she practice saying it without trying it before she got in trouble? She took out her wand, hand trembling a bit. Pointing her wand upward and taking a deep breath, she closed her eyes and said, ”uh-uh-ah-SEN-dee-oh.” Was anything happening? Did she go anywhere? Opening her eyes to take a peek, she realized she was still on the ground. Her shoulders relaxed as her hand fell to her side. She wasn’t sure if she was relieved or disappointed. Okay... she had to try again. What was it the Headmaster had said? Intent and control. She could do this. She would just do it a little bit at the time. Intent... intent... her intent was to go just a couple feet off the ground. Just a couple feet. Pointing her wand up again, she said, ”Ascendio!” with more confidence this time, and to her immense surprise she came a couple of feet off the ground. In her shock, she lost her concentration and thus lost her control, falling back to the ground. She landed hard, on her feet, but hard. The kind of hard that sent a tingle up your legs into your back. ”Ow...” she gasped... |

Claudine glared at Curtis once more when he spoke up but as she had made up her mind earlier, she wasn’t going to say anything further. She wasn’t a talker, anyway, as anyone who came in contact with her knew. In any case, she could already bet that she was in a huge amount of trouble with Trent for not answering the question, for standing against some of the others and for pointing out that there wasn't going to be limited spells in the real world. Whatever. Claudine was used to Trent, his constant criticisms and love for detention. Without really thinking about it, she shot Heath a questioning look. Didn’t he have a response too? Claudine snorted loudly and had the audacity to roll her eyes, not caring if Trent heard or saw her. An essay? Ha. What else was new? Honestly, he was more of a dictator than a Headmaster these days. Again… Whatever. The Slytherin was ready to move on. Already notes were being made by her and already she was muttering the incantation. “Ascendio. Ascendio.’’ Being in no mood to work with anyone, Claudine grabbed a basket, stuck a piece of parchment with her name on it and got to work. “Ascendio.’’ Cue an upward point with wand. The Snakette was quite taken aback at the feeling of being launched into the air despite knowing what the spell did. So surprised she was that Claudine did not even have time to grab a key. It didn’t matter. Now that she was back on the ground and had some experience of what the spell felt like, she was better prepared for round two. |

And then started to fall. In that moment, Ivy realized just how small and weak she was. There was no way she could catch someone falling from that high without both of them getting hurt. Pointing her wand at Ashley, she instinctively cast a hover charm to slow down Ashley’s momentum and allow her to safely float to the ground. ”Woah - that was a close one...” she said, letting out a deep breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. |

”Okay, I think we’ve got the up part right, it’s just the down part. We just have to focus more on the way down, and kind of like when I was in gymnastics, they always said to bend your knees when you land the dismount!” That was it... she’d just bend her knees like when she was dismounting the uneven bars. Super easy. She could do this. Making sure Ashley was ready to spot her again, Ivy raised her wand and cast the charm again, rising higher now that she was more confident in using the spell. Grabbing a key, she pulled it in tight to her body. She squeezed her legs together and her arms at her sides as she began to fall back to the ground. This time, she watched as the floor came closer so that she could prepare for the landing. As her feet hit the floor, she bent her knees, and once she was sure she had her balance she stood up straight and made the traditional gymnast ta-da motion and giggled at Ashley as she tossed the key in the basket. |

Mamie heard Ivy practicing the spell without her wand first and thought that was a gem of an idea. She put her wand on the desk and looked at the word on the board. "Ah-sehn-dee-oh. Ah-SEHN-dio." She nodded to herself. Yup, she's totally got it. Now she was supposed to...collect keys from the ceiling. And stick 'em in a basket. Yep, just a normal day at Hogwarts. She collected a basket from the floor and wrote Mamie on a piece of parchment, which she wedged in the weave of the basket. How had no one noticed these baskets when they were cleaning up the classroom earlier? She supposed she had been pretty focused on the normal classroom stuff being out of place, not the extra things in the classroom. Setting her basket on the floor and grabbing her wand off the desk, Mamie took a deep breath. She could do this. Just fly herself up to the ceiling. No big deal. "Aaasceeendio!" she said, flicking her wand upward. She rose about a meter off the ground, and squealed with glee before she fell back to the ground, landing on her feet but promptly toppling over onto her bottom. "That was so fun!" she said. Unfortunately she had not gotten anywhere near the ceiling yet. She'd have to try again |
major catch up! Kale had absolutely nothing to say to his father from virtually the moment he entered the room. He was so irrationally angry at his arrival, which dampened any pep he might have been feeling that morning, that Kale wouldn’t have been surprised if he was physically vibrating. He could practically hear the crunch of his teeth as he ground down and refused to answer any questions. But the part that hurt the most was the deep grooves his nails were making in his palms as he clenched both hands into fists. His father was a no good jerkface. Everything about this man made Kale want to act irrationally. Angry. Un-Kale-like. Apparently two Trent children at school was far too much for his old man. What was once an extremely strict and sometimes unfeeling father had turned into, well, this. He wanted to beg his peers forgiveness for the Headmaster’s attitude. It was more than a little embarrassing. And infuriating. Kale’s scowl deepened. He wanted to throw one of those flying keys at the Headmaster’s head. Jerk. JerK. JERK. In fact. Kale didn’t draw his wand. He decided instead to sit on the ground in protest. Trent wasn’t lil Trent’s Charms Professor. He didn’t have to listen to a single thing Dad!Trent said. Call it teenage rebellion. Or a death wish. Whichever. |
Claudine decided the first thing she needed to do was to select a target. That meant, she had to select a ket then aim for it. Tilting her head up, she studied all the keys. Her strategy for now would be to grab a lower key until she got a better hang of the spell. Why injure herself when the Headmaster clearly didn’t care about any of the students? He probably hated her the most, anyway. Not that she cared. Target key chosen, Claudine directed her wand upwards. It was a key slightly to her left. “Ascendio.’’ Better prepared for the effect of the spell, Claudine felt as though she was in more control now. She was lifted off of the air quite quickly and thought that she might shoot past her target. Much to her surprise, her reflexes saved her and even though the key tried an escape, she was quicker. Claudine focused on returning safely to the ground. So all of her concentration was put on this. Her landing was a lot harder than usual which left her wincing in pain. Why? Pain had particularly shot through her right foot which had taken the bulk of her weight. Still… there was now a key in her basket. |
Bernie had an insufferable know-it-all card? Her mouth twitched into a small smile at that response from the Headmaster, even though he was dead serious now and all that. She could be insufferable, this she knew. But alas, he wasn't asking any more stupid questions, and they were going to be playing with keys now, so. Guess she'd put her card aside for the moment. The fourth year wiggled her wand out of her boot and cleared her throat. "Ah-SEN-dee-oh," she practiced, without the wand movement yet. "Ah-SEN-dee-oh! Ah-SEN-dee-oh!" Eh, alright, she probably had a handle on this one. It wasn't too tricky. Now, to aim for a key.... Bernie didn't like flying, like ever, especially not on brooms or methods similar to brooms. So this... would be a real test. She bit down on her lip, held out her left hand/free hand, and then cast the spell on herself. "Ascendio!" AND UPPPPPPPPPPPPP! she went! ZOOMING! |
Violet could not believe some of the snippy answers some of the students were giving Headmaster Trent--so the man made you mad, it was no help to get made back at him, he was the one in the position of power right now, so you would inevitably lose and make him even more difficult to boot. And that fourth year Slytherin, Claudine, going off on those Ravenclaws--why take it out on them just because she was annoyed at the headmaster (as she obviously was). And for giving pretty much the same answer as Violet had, though she hadn't specified she wanted to hurt the beast. Creature, monster, wild animal, Violet didn't care what it was, if it was trying to eat her, it was her enemy and she would fight it as best as she could. The creature would do the same if it were the other way around. Violet didn't go out of her way to hurt creatures and animals, but if they tried to hurt her, then--it was on! But Trent's response to Violet was a decided improvement over last time--yes, she had remembered his response before about Ascendio meaning you had to come back down again (she had also remember not to rattle on so, she tried not to make the same mistakes twice). The Headmaster did seem in a particularly bad mood, but come to think of it, a lot of people had been in bad moods lately. He really wasn't so terribly bad, he just didn't mince words or try to coddle you. He was kind of like her grandfather in that way, and Violet could take a few snarky remarks by now, she was well used to it. Violet did keep looking over at the Charms Professor every now and then, to see if he was all right--he seemed conscious, he'd been looking around when they came into the classroom, but he didn't seem to be making much effort to get up or to re-take control of his classroom. Maybe he didn't want to aggravate Headmaster Trent when he was in a bad mood, either. Well, he didn't look dead, and surely Trent would do something if that professor was really hurt. So Violet turned her attention to the next task (flying, why did it always have to be flying...) After snagging a basket and writing her name on it, Violet looked upward and surveyed the chaos of moving keys overhead. Well, may as well try for one and see how it goes, then make adjustments accordingly. Violet focused on a key a moderate distance above her, not too high and not too low, which didn't seem to be moving too fast or erratically, then pointed her want straight up and firmly said, "Ascendio!" Violet rose swiftly up into the air, to just about the right place, she noted with satisfaction. But when she reached out and grabbed at the key, it slipped right through her hand and kept on going, and Violet sank back to the floor empty-handed. "Oh, rotten rumphorns!" she muttered under her breath. She would have to try again, and maybe this time try to grasp the key with a little more finesse. |
Avalon was thrilled that Headmaster Trent didn't seem to hate her answer. It may have been the first time this term that she didn't feel like she completely disappointed him. And she was no longer taken aback by his rude comments to her classmates - although she did make a mental note to commiserate with Aboli over that essay assignment she was given. Personally, Avalon didn't see the issue with not speaking up in class. Many students were just shy. And sometimes, it just was hard to think of a response. The activity seemed semi-interesting, and it least it was related to Charms rather than dark creatures. After grabbing a basket, the Ravenclaw got straight to work. "Ascendio!" As soon as she pointed her wand to the sky, her body shot upward. The Ravenclaw was so taken aback by the force that she didn't even have time to grab a key - she was too busy throwing her other arm out to stop herself from smacking into the ceiling. WHOA. That spell was quite the sensitive one, wasn't it? |
Kale Phoebe was definitely keen to propel herself into the air toward the ceiling, but her heart went out to Kale's little dejected face on the floor. She would sit next to him for every class through seventh year if that was what it took. Assuming he wanted her company, of course. She plopped down beside him and put an arm around him. "If you don't want to fling yourself at the ceiling, you don't have to, but don't not do fun things just because someone bossy suggested it first. We could see who can take out the most prefects...?" |
SPOILER!!: Catch up Oh pumpkin pastes, she had gotten her charms mixed up and said the wrong one to the headmaster himself. Now he would think she was just plan stupid. Gemma reminded herself which spell was which and started to listen more so she wouldn't do that again. When the next question came about she thought it would be easy to use the spell not to jump to a ledge she couldn't reach but just to bounce herself over the creature to go the other way. When someone brought up doing the spell on the creature she got confused again. Could they just throw themselves up, but wait... one spell was for them, the other someone else. Was that correct.... Gemma was feeling lost and as a second year she didn't want to feel like a first year in the class. As he spoke about the spell they were going to do and practicing it she got a bit nervous, but would never show it. She took a deep breath and thought about the spell, Ascendio, Ascendio, she could do this. She would do this. Pointing her wand upward she said, "Ascendio" ..... nothing |
Violet sank back again to the floor of the classroom, this time with the end of a key trapped firmly between her fingers. It was like that plant that cut you if you grabbed onto it too tightly, but you could pick it if you plucked it gently. It was still trying to get away from her, but she managed to wrestle it into her basket, where it suddenly stopped and lay there quietly. "One down," she muttered to herself. Flushed with success, Violet exclaimed, "Ascendio!" again, this time with a little too much vigor, and she shot up with too much force, nearly hitting the ceiling. She managed to catch herself with her hands and propel herself away from danger, but she had lost the chance to get another key, for she sank back to the floor before she had the chance to try for another one. |
Claudine was determined to secure at least one more key before the lesson moved on. This was why she was already holding her wand upwards, ignoring the small pain in her foot. “Ascendio,’’ came her mutter that sounded more like a command as opposed to the word simply being said. The Snakette’s feet lifted off the ground at a sharp speed, enough to distract her and almost made her forget her goal. Not that it mattered. The key that she had been aiming for… well, she did manage to grab it but it wriggled out of her grasp. Claudine hadn’t gotten the chance to grip it properly. She gritted her teeth in frustration as she watched the key fly out of her reach and she started to descend. She’d get the next one. Claudine was determined to. |
Having gotten over the initial thrill of learning the new spell and the embarrassment of her terrible landing, Mamie decided to try to get a key now. She looked for one of the lower keys, then positioned her basket underneath it. She took a deep breath. She could do it. Not that hard. Holding her wand out, Mamie flicked it upward, focusing hard on the key above her. "Ascendio!" she said firmly. She moved her other arm over her head--just in case she went straight for the ceiling--as she soared upward. She was a little far from the key she had aimed for, but she reached waaay far over and was able to barely snag the edge of it before falling back down. Unfortunately that meant she was also waaay off balance for the landing. "Owwwww," she muttered, checking her elbows and knees for bruises. Shouldn't the professor have put out cushions or something? Realizing she was alright except for the bruises, she crawled over to her basket and shoved the key in. Did she really have to do that again? Sighing, Mamie stood up and straightened her uniform. She could totally do this again. |
Heath showed absolutely no sign of reaction to the barrage of harsh words from the headmaster. He’d learned long ago not to show emotion in the presence of a bully, and that was exactly what Headmaster Trent had become this term, just a grown-up version of a schoolyard bully! That, plus knowing what was coming ahead of time, somewhere made the disapproval sting less. Frankly, Heath was more concerned for his classmates than himself, especially Claudine. This would call for a caramellatte later and maybe a study buddy session to Heath was glad - okay, maybe “glad” wasn’t the right word, but at least less angry - when the headmaster finally tired of berating students and moved on to actually teaching the spell. He copied the information on the board down in his notes. The spell itself seemed pretty straightforward, the activity… not so much. So they were to use the spell to get the keys and hope that they don’t injure themselves in the process. Was the lack of cushioning the only cruel twist to this, or was there a trick with the keys themselves too? What did they do, bite? Scratch? Try to gouge people’s eyes out? Merlin only knew! As Heath’s eyes momentarily flicked toward Professor Fuller-Thompson, he wondered what the original plan for the lesson had been and if this was even the spell the professor intended to teach. Whatever it was, he was sure it didn’t involve setting the students up for injury! The charms professor may not be a ray of sunshine, but he wasn’t cruel either. Heath didn’t have much time to think about it before the headmaster’s final words made him stifle a sarcastic laugh. Honestly, did he think they needed reminding of that?! It was obvious that Trent no longer cared about anyone but himself… not the students who would be injured by this joke of an activity, not Professor Recard who would have the extra work of treating said injured students, not Professor, not Professor Fuller-Thomspon who he was just ignoring. Whatever, Heath thought bitterly as he left his seat to get a basket. If he doesn’t care about us, why should I care about him? He wasted no time in writing his name on it and drawing his wand. The sooner he got this done, the sooner he could get on with his life! His dark eyes scanned the room, searching for a target away from any furniture or other students that he might crash into on the descent. He spotted a high flying key near the back corner of the room. It would be hard to reach that one without hitting the ceiling, but he’d give it a go. “Ah-SEN-dee-oh,” he mumbled under his breath. “Ah-SEN-dee-oh… Ascendio…” When he felt comfortable with the pronunciation, he pointed his wand up. Usually Heath’s spells needed extra gusto to work, but this time, he thought restraint was more important. A look of intense concentration crossed his face as he envisioned himself rising high enough to grab the key but no further. “Ascendio!” he said the incantation, immediately launching into the air. The good news was that he hadn’t overshot the target; the bad news: he undershot it, descending just before he could reach high enough to grab the key. Darn! Let’s try that again... |
Carsyn raised an eyebrow skeptically at the 'headmaster'. So why even offer the ascendio as an option if you couldn't use it??? Also she was pretty sure he didn't exactly say it was out of reach ... not those exact words at least. The seventh year shook her head, determined to not let his tone get her down. At least she didn't have to write an essay; she had enough to worry about with NEWTS and if she was going to be accepted by a professional quidditch and/or quodpod team. What if the scope he gave was soooo narrow that it barely allowed for any creativity??? Well moving on though to an activity, this was one to prove her seeking skills - despite the fact that that there were a few promising seekers in this room - but it just meant she needed to show the edge on the competition. She was the oldest of them, so that gave her a better advantage, did it not?? Picking up a basket, she aimed the wand at herself, carefully eying where there was an abundance of flying keys before casting "Ascendio" on herself. As she'd done before, her body went up... right to a top most key and reached for it, snatching at it into her basket. One down.... how many more to go to prove she was a talented seeker. But what goes up, must come down, which she did quite quicker than her upward pace. On her way down, the Gryffindor reached her arms out to slow the downward fall and also to hopefully snag another key or two. Which she did, clutching it on her fall down and once her feet touched the ground, stashing it into her basket. Two keys. Back up again? |
Well, exxxccccuuuuse her for mistaking his question for a hypothetical. The Headmaster's reply only made Whitney raise a brow though. Nope, the man didn't need to know how much of a jerk she thought he was being right now. Not to mention that the thought would probably earn her detention, which she wasn't going for. She also thankfully held in her "duh" at the mention of the ceiling and not hitting it. A stone ceiling to the head would definitely hurt, if it didn't knock you out. Also, how were they supposed to control the direction they went? Flapping their arms like a cartoon? Though, there was one idea that came to mind on how to catch one of those keys. She simply stepped under a large grouping of them, thinking they couldn't possibly all get away that quickly. "Ascendio!" And yes her wand was pointing upward and yes it did launch her into the air. Also, the all stupid keys could in fact move away that fast. |
Thankfully, the third time was the charm. Ha ha. Get it? Charm? The second time, Avalon had been so cautious with her cast that she barely rose a few feet off the ground. Not nearly high enough to grab any of the keys. The Ravenclaw practiced the spell on the floor a few more times to get used to the feel of it. Once a cluster of keys hovered ahead of her, she exclaimed, "Ascendio!" She zoomed into the air, brushing a key with her fingertips before the cluster scattered away. Avalon reached out as far as she could and finally snagged one key. As she headed back down to the ground, she tucked it carefully into her basket. But that moment of distraction was enough for her to forget to control her descent, so she hit the floor with a bit more momentum than she was expecting. Avalon rubbed at her knee, which had absorbed most of the force, as she gazed up at the ceiling to decide which key to go after next. |
There was a LOT going on in this class right now. Morgan already wasn't the best focused student, but with everything going on around him - the professor on the floor, the headmaster taking over, loads of winged keys in the air, students flying up all around him to catch them - that he was having a hard time focusing on just one thing. It was a little like chaos, but a fun sort of chaos... so who would he be to not jump right into the fun?? "Ascendio!" he shouted as he pointed his wand up towards the ceiling. He immediately shot up, too fast and too high to catch any keys. In fact, he was so disordered as he shot into the air that he bumped at least one person on his way. It wasn't completely his fault though! There were so many people and keys in the air that it was kind of inevitable. But he yelled an apology over his shoulder anyway. "Sorry!" And just before he started to descend, he remembered the whole reason he was up in the air - the keys! His hands made a mad scramble for the closest one, just slipping from his fingers before he slowly drifted back to the floor. Trying again! |
Okay, so he didn’t get a key on the first try, but his spell had worked and more importantly, he didn’t hit the ceiling or anything else on the landing. Heath supposed things could be worse. He looked up at the key he missed, unsure whether or not he wanted to chance going higher and possibly crashing into the ceiling to grab it. No, too risky; he’d need to change strategies. His eyes scanned the ceiling, looking for two or more keys grouped close together. He found a couple of keys hovering near each other at the other end of the room and headed in that direction. From his place on the ground, he scrutinized the two keys in the air. Aiming for the higher one seemed the best idea. That way, he could try to grab the lower one if he undershot the spell again. Heath took a quick look around for any nearby students or objects before aiming pointing his wand upward. “Ascendio!” he exclaimed, visualizing his target clearly in mind. Up into the air he went, higher, higher, but still not quite enough to reach the high key. He made a grab for the lower key, holding onto it for dear life as it tried to escape. No, you are not getting away from me! He thought angrily, his grip tightening. He had worked too hard to lose it now, and for all he knew, this could be the elder wand activity all over again. Knowing Headmaster Trent, it wouldn’t surprise him at all if everyone without a key at the end of the activity got sent to detention! Heath’s struggle to hold on to the key shook his concentration. He landed hard on his bottom, but his hand still clutched the key firmly. Wasting no time, he picked himself up and deposited the key into his basket. In you go, you stupid thing! At least it finally held still in the basket. Glad to be rid of that troublesome key, Heath looked up at the ceiling again for more keys to catch. |
Crimalla tried not to look too relieved when the Headmaster told her her answer was mostly right. Nevertheless, she couldn't help but BEAM with joy upon hearing this. Despite everything, she'd managed to give a good answer when so many of the others hadn't - and weirdest of all was she got it by good luck. Maybe this lesson wasn't going to be so hard after all. Then they were moving on to the activity. Launching oneself into the air? "What if we fall?" she asked nervously, hoping she didn't sound too worried. "Or what if we land too hard and sprain our ankles?" Wait, was that how the poor professor had ended up on the floor?! Scary as that thought was, Crimalla did not want to get in trouble for not participating in the activity. All around her, her classmates were launching themselves boldly into the air. They were all so much braver than she, or maybe they were all scared of the Headmaster. Though she noticed one student refusing to take part. Was that the son of the Headmaster? From what she'd heard, his name was Kale? But she wasn't sure. Either way, he wasn't participating. Was he also scared like she was? The pale first year glanced in his direction, trying not to be too obvious about it. Focusing back on the touch challenge ahead of her, she decided to at least give it a try. "Ascendio!" she cried out. Surprisingly, she really did launch into the air. She soared high, but she moved so fast that the most she could do was flail her arms around. Something hard (a key?) smacked her in the forehead. "AHH!!!" she cried. It stung - but too badly. She toppled to the floor, landing disgracefully on her backside. Rubbing her forehead where the key hit, Crimalla turned to the headmaster. "I don't think it's safe to go up there without eye protection. I got hit accidentally in the forehead. It really hurt." Well it didn't hurt that much, but it did sting. She then walked over to where Kale was sitting. She sat down next to him. She wasn't trying to anger anyone. It's just that her forehead stung and she thought it was excusable if she didn't want to continue without proper face protection. |
Valencia wrote her name down and attached it to the basket as instructed. She then looked up at the flying keys and at the basket in her hand. The Headmaster just said to put keys in the basket, right? She didn't need to necessarily catch them with her hands? She held the basket in one hand and aimed her wand straight up. "Ascendio" she said evenly as she shot up in the air over a few keys. She then held her basket upside down to catch some keys on the way down. Scooping them was much more efficient than catching one at a time with her hands. It was also within the instructions he gave so ha! She figured the Headmaster would appreciate her thinking given how he'd been this term with other assignments. |
One key down, infinite keys to go, pretty much. Mamie took a deep breath, then positioned herself and her basket of one key underneath a cluster of keys that were somewhat close together. She was hoping she could get more than one, since she felt like she was behind how many keys everybody else had. Focus...she tried to ignore the noise and motion of everybody else also trying to gather keys. Locking one of the keys in her sights, Mamie flicked her wand upward like she'd been practicing. "Ascendio!" she said, softening her knees and holding out her free hand for balance. This time she zoooomed upward straight toward the key she had aimed at. Mamie grasped at it, missed, and swiped at it again as she started falling back down. She didn't even look to see if she'd caught the key, because now she was focused on landing. She did not want anymore bruises, okay? Trying to center herself above her legs, Mamie wobbled a bit when her feet hit the floor but actually managed to stay upright! It was a miracle! Mamie looked in her fist to see if she'd caught the key. Nope, no key. Sighing, Mamie looked back up. She had been pretty successful this time, she thought. She didn't hurt hurself on the landing. She'd give it one more go. "Ascendio!" she said firmly. Up, up she went, practically to the same spot near the ceiling as the last go. She tried closing her hands around the pesky key this time, trapping it between her free hand and her fist gripping her wand. And she caught it! Mamie let out a small squeal of delight mid-air, so pleased with herself she forgot to brace herself, and instead of sticking the landing this time she fell forward onto her knees. She quickly reached for her basket and tucked the key inside. Two down! |
Violet had learned from her mistakes not to grab at the keys too hard and not to ascend too forcefully, and had managed to snag a second, low-hanging key, but she had managed to earn herself a number of scratches and bruises in the process. Why did Hogwarts lessons always have to be so uncomfortable? First it was getting covered in garbage in Muggle Studies, and now this. But Violet was determined to try to get at least three keys before the exercise was over, so she straightened herself as best she could, and looked upward for a likely key. |
SPOILER!!: Fifi and Crimalla Kale Trent had no interest in being reasoned with. He had sat down, taking a stand against his father’s tyranny, and that was where he fully intended to stay. It wasn’t a coup. His peers could continue on as they pleased. But Kale wanted to force his old man to hearhim. Even though he was silent. When Phoebe joined him Kale wearily leaned into her embrace. She was a good one, that Fifi James. Take notes, father. Nice people treated people with respect. Still. Kale shook his head and said, ”I’m fine here.” He would not be moving. Not for anyone. This was his great STAND! Or sit. Semantics. When the second student joined him on the floor, Kale nodded at her. Not a coup, Dad. But maybe a demonstration. |
SPOILER!!: Chaos Ensues Finally! Something she could do! They had tackled this particular charm during her last quarter in Ilvermorny, granted, she hadn't actually mastered the charm at all before she left - but at least she had the wand movement down! She took a basket, wrote her name down on the space provided with a flourish, and found a nice empty area around the room to begin casting. "Ascendio" she said, pointing her wand upwards, fully expecting to go zooming up to the ceiling. But nothing. Nada. Zilch. Serena glared at her wand - as if it was the wand's fault in the first place - then looked around the room, watching as a few of her classmates succeeded in performing the charm. "Ascendio!" she tried once more, a little more aggressively this time, jabbing her wand upward into the air. And before she could figure out what was happening, she was zooming violently upwards - the ceiling looking to appear closer and closer with each passing second. Her mother had always said that she was a hard headed little witch, I guess it was time to test that theory. |
Violet was sore and tired, but she was attempting one more "Ascendio". Her concentration was off now, though, and instead of rising straight up in the air, she went off at an angle, losing control of the direction. Dear Merlin! she hoped she would not collide with another student in mid-air... |
