Default Charms 1: Going UP!

Oh, it was EARLY. Piers had never been much of a morning person, but he had to at least pretend he was while he was at Hogwarts. He much preferred having his classes in the afternoon, but he had drawn the short end of the stick this term with a morning class.

Yawning with a bit of a groan, Piers made his way to the Charms classroom to start the lesson. Tiredly, he shuffled his feet to the classroom door and opened it up, yawning AGAIN as he shuffled inside.

CLANG. BANG. THUD.

"OW. WHAT THE -"

Immediately upon entering the room, Piers smashed his foot into something, tripped over the unknown object and then tumbled to the floor, crashing into MORE unknown objects on his way down.

On the floor, Piers looked around to see what had caused him to trip and found..... chairs, desks, books and props strewn about the room. The desks were all out of their normal order, some sideways, some upside down. The chairs were all out of sorts, too - some upside down, some tossed on top of the askew desks.

Piers sat up quickly and blinked, processing what he was seeing. The entire classroom had been ransacked??? But what..... who? And WHY.

UGH.

OOC: Hello everyone and welcome to Charms class! Things are a bit different this time around. Have your school character come in and see the damage and.. maybe help Professor Fuller-Thompson off the floor?

Class will officially begin in 24 hours!

”Okay, I think we’ve got the up part right, it’s just the down part. We just have to focus more on the way down, and kind of like when I was in gymnastics, they always said to bend your knees when you land the dismount!” That was it... she’d just bend her knees like when she was dismounting the uneven bars. Super easy. She could do this.

Making sure Ashley was ready to spot her again, Ivy raised her wand and cast the charm again, rising higher now that she was more confident in using the spell. Grabbing a key, she pulled it in tight to her body. She squeezed her legs together and her arms at her sides as she began to fall back to the ground. This time, she watched as the floor came closer so that she could prepare for the landing. As her feet hit the floor, she bent her knees, and once she was sure she had her balance she stood up straight and made the traditional gymnast ta-da motion and giggled at Ashley as she tossed the key in the basket.
Ashley was very eager to stick the landing. "Nice. Ascendio!" There were no keys there in that moment, but on her way down, she stuck the landing gracefully. "Hey, did you see that?! I landed without hurting myself!" She beamed. Now that she could land, it was much safer to grab keys. Magic was so fun when you weren't dying.

Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!

Mamie heard Ivy practicing the spell without her wand first and thought that was a gem of an idea. She put her wand on the desk and looked at the word on the board. "Ah-sehn-dee-oh. Ah-SEHN-dio." She nodded to herself. Yup, she's totally got it.

Now she was supposed to...collect keys from the ceiling. And stick 'em in a basket. Yep, just a normal day at Hogwarts. She collected a basket from the floor and wrote Mamie on a piece of parchment, which she wedged in the weave of the basket. How had no one noticed these baskets when they were cleaning up the classroom earlier? She supposed she had been pretty focused on the normal classroom stuff being out of place, not the extra things in the classroom.

Setting her basket on the floor and grabbing her wand off the desk, Mamie took a deep breath. She could do this. Just fly herself up to the ceiling. No big deal. "Aaasceeendio!" she said, flicking her wand upward. She rose about a meter off the ground, and squealed with glee before she fell back to the ground, landing on her feet but promptly toppling over onto her bottom.

"That was so fun!" she said. Unfortunately she had not gotten anywhere near the ceiling yet. She'd have to try again

Kale had absolutely nothing to say to his father from virtually the moment he entered the room. He was so irrationally angry at his arrival, which dampened any pep he might have been feeling that morning, that Kale wouldn’t have been surprised if he was physically vibrating. He could practically hear the crunch of his teeth as he ground down and refused to answer any questions. But the part that hurt the most was the deep grooves his nails were making in his palms as he clenched both hands into fists.

His father was a no good jerkface.

Everything about this man made Kale want to act irrationally. Angry. Un-Kale-like. Apparently two Trent children at school was far too much for his old man. What was once an extremely strict and sometimes unfeeling father had turned into, well, this.

He wanted to beg his peers forgiveness for the Headmaster’s attitude. It was more than a little embarrassing. And infuriating.

Kale’s scowl deepened.

He wanted to throw one of those flying keys at the Headmaster’s head. Jerk. JerK. JERK.

In fact. Kale didn’t draw his wand. He decided instead to sit on the ground in protest. Trent wasn’t lil Trent’s Charms Professor. He didn’t have to listen to a single thing Dad!Trent said.

Call it teenage rebellion. Or a death wish. Whichever.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine decided the first thing she needed to do was to select a target. That meant, she had to select a ket then aim for it. Tilting her head up, she studied all the keys. Her strategy for now would be to grab a lower key until she got a better hang of the spell. Why injure herself when the Headmaster clearly didn’t care about any of the students? He probably hated her the most, anyway. Not that she cared.

Target key chosen, Claudine directed her wand upwards. It was a key slightly to her left. “Ascendio.’’ Better prepared for the effect of the spell, Claudine felt as though she was in more control now. She was lifted off of the air quite quickly and thought that she might shoot past her target. Much to her surprise, her reflexes saved her and even though the key tried an escape, she was quicker.

Claudine focused on returning safely to the ground. So all of her concentration was put on this. Her landing was a lot harder than usual which left her wincing in pain. Why? Pain had particularly shot through her right foot which had taken the bulk of her weight.

Still… there was now a key in her basket.

Bernie had an insufferable know-it-all card? Her mouth twitched into a small smile at that response from the Headmaster, even though he was dead serious now and all that. She could be insufferable, this she knew. But alas, he wasn't asking any more stupid questions, and they were going to be playing with keys now, so. Guess she'd put her card aside for the moment.

The fourth year wiggled her wand out of her boot and cleared her throat. "Ah-SEN-dee-oh," she practiced, without the wand movement yet. "Ah-SEN-dee-oh! Ah-SEN-dee-oh!" Eh, alright, she probably had a handle on this one. It wasn't too tricky. Now, to aim for a key.... Bernie didn't like flying, like ever, especially not on brooms or methods similar to brooms. So this... would be a real test.

She bit down on her lip, held out her left hand/free hand, and then cast the spell on herself. "Ascendio!" AND UPPPPPPPPPPPPP! she went! ZOOMING!

Violet could not believe some of the snippy answers some of the students were giving Headmaster Trent--so the man made you mad, it was no help to get made back at him, he was the one in the position of power right now, so you would inevitably lose and make him even more difficult to boot.

And that fourth year Slytherin, Claudine, going off on those Ravenclaws--why take it out on them just because she was annoyed at the headmaster (as she obviously was). And for giving pretty much the same answer as Violet had, though she hadn't specified she wanted to hurt the beast. Creature, monster, wild animal, Violet didn't care what it was, if it was trying to eat her, it was her enemy and she would fight it as best as she could. The creature would do the same if it were the other way around. Violet didn't go out of her way to hurt creatures and animals, but if they tried to hurt her, then--it was on!

But Trent's response to Violet was a decided improvement over last time--yes, she had remembered his response before about Ascendio meaning you had to come back down again (she had also remember not to rattle on so, she tried not to make the same mistakes twice). The Headmaster did seem in a particularly bad mood, but come to think of it, a lot of people had been in bad moods lately. He really wasn't so terribly bad, he just didn't mince words or try to coddle you. He was kind of like her grandfather in that way, and Violet could take a few snarky remarks by now, she was well used to it.

Violet did keep looking over at the Charms Professor every now and then, to see if he was all right--he seemed conscious, he'd been looking around when they came into the classroom, but he didn't seem to be making much effort to get up or to re-take control of his classroom. Maybe he didn't want to aggravate Headmaster Trent when he was in a bad mood, either. Well, he didn't look dead, and surely Trent would do something if that professor was really hurt. So Violet turned her attention to the next task (flying, why did it always have to be flying...)

After snagging a basket and writing her name on it, Violet looked upward and surveyed the chaos of moving keys overhead. Well, may as well try for one and see how it goes, then make adjustments accordingly. Violet focused on a key a moderate distance above her, not too high and not too low, which didn't seem to be moving too fast or erratically, then pointed her want straight up and firmly said, "Ascendio!"

Violet rose swiftly up into the air, to just about the right place, she noted with satisfaction. But when she reached out and grabbed at the key, it slipped right through her hand and kept on going, and Violet sank back to the floor empty-handed. "Oh, rotten rumphorns!" she muttered under her breath. She would have to try again, and maybe this time try to grasp the key with a little more finesse.

Avalon was thrilled that Headmaster Trent didn't seem to hate her answer. It may have been the first time this term that she didn't feel like she completely disappointed him. And she was no longer taken aback by his rude comments to her classmates - although she did make a mental note to commiserate with Aboli over that essay assignment she was given. Personally, Avalon didn't see the issue with not speaking up in class. Many students were just shy. And sometimes, it just was hard to think of a response.

The activity seemed semi-interesting, and it least it was related to Charms rather than dark creatures. After grabbing a basket, the Ravenclaw got straight to work. "Ascendio!" As soon as she pointed her wand to the sky, her body shot upward. The Ravenclaw was so taken aback by the force that she didn't even have time to grab a key - she was too busy throwing her other arm out to stop herself from smacking into the ceiling. WHOA. That spell was quite the sensitive one, wasn't it?

Phoebe was definitely keen to propel herself into the air toward the ceiling, but her heart went out to Kale's little dejected face on the floor. She would sit next to him for every class through seventh year if that was what it took. Assuming he wanted her company, of course.

She plopped down beside him and put an arm around him. "If you don't want to fling yourself at the ceiling, you don't have to, but don't not do fun things just because someone bossy suggested it first. We could see who can take out the most prefects...?"

The little lion spun once she was dusted, ready to tell off whoever it might have been...when she saw the forever grumpy Headmaster.

What was he doing here?

This wasn't his class. He couldn't tell them what to do and he couldn't tell Kizzy where to sit. Except...while everyone began cleaning....and even when they sat down....Professor Charms Man didn't make him leave. Emm shot the professor worried looks, not because she was concerned about his fall but because she worried he'd really let Headmaster Trent come and torture teach them.

Unfortunately, it seemed like it was really happening. Emmerson sank down into her seat with a sullen look about her face.

She thought about not answering, so he'd REALLY see her discontent but....the kid had a lot of homework....and didn't need a 1,500 word essay added to that AT ALL so...."When you wanna ride a dragon but it's too high up in the sky so you shoot yourself up there."

Did it matter to him that they were not happy to see him? Not. Hardly.

The Headmaster did not care one way or the other about their opinions and was quite content within his own approval. Happy or not, they would learn in class today.

[,QUOTE=astrocat;12470397]Once they had finished cleaning up, Ashley grumpily sat down in her seat. Nothing like the headmaster to put her in a bad mood. "If you were drowning, then you could get your head above the water." At least this spell could have something to do with water. Ashley loved water. She glanced at the drawings on her arms, not daring to take out some markers.
SPOILER!!: Replies

"Yes."

A basic reply for a basic answer. Pulled right out of the textbook probably. It was listed as one of its uses. The Headmaster nodded once at the First Year. Neither impressed nor disappointed by her response.

It was fine.

....

"....What...are you on about, Taylor?" The Headmaster asked, fixing the girl with a look as if she'd gained another head or several other limbs. Staircases? Attics?

"What textbook have you been reading?" Nevermind what books she was reading, it was better she stopped altogether. "Ascendio propels the caster upward. It most certainly does not reveal anything." Did he need to assign her some extra reading? Were he another man, he may have been concerned.

Ah, another rambler. He was wondering when that would begin. His own classes with these students taught him that if there was a long way around a bush to say something, that was the route the students would take. It was like they couldn't help themselves.

Blackthorne was going well until the pack of wolves comment.

"Going off your own logic of hurting yourself on the way back down, I know you understand you'll come back down. What will you do once you hit the ground with broken limbs and wolves still waiting?"

The other half of the equation she'd just created.

"Focus on the lesson at hand. I won't say it again." This was not about Professor Fuller-Thompson. Should the man need help, he knew how to cast a patronus to have Recard over here. The fact he had not meant he was not in serious need of help.

"Perhaps if you focused more, you wouldn't come up with such ridiculous responses. The spell propels you upward, it does not keep you there. Cleaning is hardly a reason to use it."

Not the brightest Prefect in the bunch. Not hardly.

...

.....

What...even?

We are not using spells on professors, today, Grantham and I do not have a yacht. I also don't recommend using the spell on an anchor unless you plan to first tie yourself to that anchor."[/b] Not a half bad idea. He'd wish her well and encourage her til the very end. One less of them to keep an eye on.

"There are better, more effective spells for something like that."

"Right. Yes. Once you've shot past the tree and the cat, I'm sure it will feel much safer. Again, there are better, more effective spells for something like that."

The man was beginning to wonder if these students were getting this charm confused with one that helped with levitating--a more stable charm that wouldn't have you shooting up and possibly overshooting whatever target you were aiming for.

Stuck cat? Climb the tree. Tree too high? Use that spell and shoot right past it then worry over how you'll get down. Either way, it would be a waste of magic.

"Interesting of you to say that." Very interesting. "You're right, if you find yourself stuck down a deep place, this spell--done carefully--may be one of your best bets."

Not entirely useless afterall. Who would've thought?

"In the scenario you've just mentioned." To answer her question on when to choose which. "You'll do more harm than good using ascendio to place a book high. For starters, you're likely to run into the ceiling. If you don't, you've got only seconds to place the book before gravity takes over. Better to use wingardium leviosa. It offers more control and is less likely to get you killed."

She wasn't the first to suggest a scenario that required more control than this charm offered so it was best to explain.

"Just zooooom right up into the ceiling. Brilliant. I wish more people who used libraries would think to use this rather than the effective levitation charm." The Headmaster replied dryly.

And why was she standing so close? Did they need a lesson on personal space? The man didn't care much for her explanation. The girl had entered and seen others cleaning but did nothing to help. Surely if it would've been a problem, Fuller-Thompson would have told them to leave it be.

The Headmaster nodded when the boy walked back into the room showcasing his attire. Yes, that was much better. Much more in line with what he was meant to look like.

As to his answer....

Well...it would've been unusual if Fuller got everything right.

"Good for getting on the roof provided you don't overshoot said roof and break all your limbs in the fall." He replied plainly, not for a second missing the example the boy used. He would not dignify it with a response when he knew the boy was looking to get a rise out of him.

Should the Headmaster find him on the roof one day, he would take it from there.

"I suppose." The man conceded. "If you have enough control to not overshoot your target and land yourself in further danger, then yes, it would be a fast means of creating distance between yourself and whatever you're trying to avoid."

There were....few students in this lesson....he felt had that sort of control....

...The Gryffindors...were not among them.

"Yes you could." A vague answer if he'd ever heard one. While some students were avid ramblers (a problem in their own right), there were others that gave such short answers that they could be applied to several other questions and still technically be correct.

How inspiring.

"While you're not likely to drown or be in too much danger from quicksand, yes, the spell can be used to get you out." Similar to the answer of drowning and depending on how it was executed and what the boy perceived to be dangerous, likely to do as much harm as good.

Another with a mention of steep danger. The man nodded.

"Correct, it can get you up and out in a jiffy." Something that would come in handy in just a few moments so he hoped her classmates really were taking notes.

"Not really." The Headmaster replied. "Not unless you had the student strapped to you and I can't think of a single professor who'd want them." Bad enough when they stood too close while talking to you. No one needed a student right up against them passing on germs.

"Ascendio lifts the caster, wingardium leviosa--and the charm alarte ascendare which would be better for propelling problematic students skyward--would be better when the focus is on things outside of the caster. As well, the levitating charm offers more control when lifting things. You're less likely to hurt or damage whatever you're trying to move."

The difference was simple. One you used on yourself and the other you used on others.

SPOILER!!: Cambridge
Let's pretend I quoted myself. Ahem.

...

.....

"I'm sure the dragon will appreciate you making its job that much easier." Was his only reply to the Gryffindor child. Given her responses in his own lessons, this did not surprise him but it did her no favours in his books either.

There was something truly wrong with that child.

SPOILER!!: Lindsey

The Headmaster nodded.

"Yes, as your classmates have mentioned, falling down a hill or into a ditch would require a good bit of force to remedy. Provided you don't break a few limbs on the fall--and even then can perform wandless magic should your wand arm be out of commission--the situation might not end in tradegy."

"Based on several of the responses I've seen, I think it important to make a few distinctions. The first, "ascendio" is used on yourself. This charm propels the caster upward. Should you wish to list something else, you can use the levitating charm. This, I hope, erases the question of when you use which." They were very different spells.

"With this charm, you have to be mindful of your surroundings. Where will you land? Is there anything to break your fall? Is the place you'll land safe? You'll also need to consider the amount of force you use. Too much and you could hurt yourself worse than whatever danger you originally faced. Too little and you'll still be in trouble."

Clear? Clear. They were moving on.

"Before we get to any practice, I have another question for you. Listen carefully, I don't want you misunderstanding. Let's say you were being chased. You're being chased by a wild creature intent on making you its next meal. It gets you to the foot of a cliff with a dead end but even with the charm, it's too high for you to get to the ledge at the top. You have only two charms you can use. Alarte Ascendare, or Ascendio. Which do you use and why? I'm not asking what each spell does, I'm not asking for the difference. I'm asking what strategy you're trying to employ with whichever spell you choose to use."

OOC: Question 2 is uuupppp!! It's a question of strategy mostly. The Headmaster would like to know what your character would ultimately choose to do to save themselves in the scenario outlined. I'll be back to move us again in another 24-28 hrs

Dumb. Their Headmaster was dumb on top of being mean. Just look how sad he made Kizzy.

Again, the little girl considered not answering but again she thought of the 1,500 word essay and just how much she was uninterested in getting it done. Ugh. Professor Fuller-Thompson needed to take his class back. She wasn't feeling like being very exceptional today and Trent gave them very little choice whenever he was around.

Slowly, her hand rose. Emm was in no hurry to get her answer in and could wait for the others to speak.

"Alarte ascendare. If you shoot it up into the air enough, it'll realize you aren't worth all that effort and go find someone else--if it survives going splat so many times anyway."

SPOILER!!: Replies

The Headmaster deadpanned at the first year, not sure whether he was less impressed with her tears or her response. It was a close call but in the end, he would have to say...her answer.

First years cried. They did so too often. That was something he was getting used to. The answer--while also not surprising coming from the school population--was more a standout.

"Do the words choose and or mean nothing to you? I've asked you to pick one." O n e.

"Fine, I suppose. If you shoot it high enough, there's a decent chance it will be hurt in the fall. Injured even." And an injured animal was far easier to elude than one who was patiently waiting for you to fall back to the ground.

At least she was thinking.

Merlin's beard could she just pick one?

The Headmaster found the students and their words tedious on most days. Having to sit while they decided how they would survey was likely to cause his ears to bleed one of these days.

Ugh.

"I doubt you could hang on long enough for it to lose patience, any of your other plans may work better." And no, he couldn't remember what most of them were.

"I did say you can only use one of the two spells mentioned. It's not difficult to pay attention, Fuller. You need only pay attention and listen."

Admittedly tasks that seemed particularly difficult for this one. Had he been listening at all or had he only listened in so far as he needed to provide an answer and needed the right context?

"And a 1,500 word essay for you on this question. I want it by Monday." What with the week nearly ending and him having far too much else to do. "You're not learning. It's a shame." He wasn't looking forward to the essay he would have to read. Perhaps he wouldn't at all.

Perhaps he would torch it once she was gone.

But she would write it. "I expect answers when I ask questions. You should set a better example, Ms. Prefect."

"It would be the better choice, yes. Given the likelihood you'll fall right back to the ground, it would be better to have the creature doing all the launching and falling."

At least she remembered this time that going up meant coming back down. It was good to see some students learning from their mistakes.

Wasn't someone insufferable today.

"And a 1,500 word essay you for, too. Next time you decide you want to stop minding your own business to attack others in the class, you'll wanna make sure your own affairs are in order." Answer questions in class or do so in your free time. He'd already made this rule clear. This may have been Charms but he was the one standing at the front of the room. That meant his rules were the ones they followed.

"I didn't ask you how many spells exist in the world. I asked you to answer my question. Surely your capable of following simple instructions."

"It would become the lesser of two evils, yes. With the cliff not an option," More of a hindrance, actually "You may as well get the creature out of the way so you can make a clean get away."

Critical thinking and the understanding it was better to answer the questions than not to.

At least some of his prefects were learning.

Speaking of prefects.

"I've already said the top of the cliff is out of reach even with the use of ascendio and don't believe at your level I should have to explain why telling me what other spells you'll use defeats the purpose of the question."

He did say, they could only use one of two. He did. Summoning charms, while useful, were not allowed in the scenario. Nor was apparating. Nor was using a broom.

"Those are excellent questions, James. I don't have an answer. I must be a saint." The man replied dryly, unimpressed by the dramatics and the failure to adequately answer the question.

"Do you plan to give a serious answer today or...?"

"Very practical." He was beginning to expect no less from this one.

Of all the students he suspected would die prematurely, Phillips was not one of them and that said a lot given the current cohort that attended lessons at Hogwarts.

"You would do well to get the creature incapacitated in one way or the other to raise your chances. Yes."

...

.....

"You are the perfect example of what your sister meant when she said you would die." Jumping bean? Amuse the creature? What was wrong with this one? Why did he think she only gave ridiculous answers during his lessons? It was clear to him now that the girl had a death wish all around.

The Headmaster glowered at the boy who chose to remain silent.

"You've earned yourself a 1,500 word essay on the question. I don't know how many time I need to tell you children that when I ask a question, I expect an answer. I'm not talking to the walls." Though it felt he was at times.

"You'll do well to remember that."

"You're not on the cliff." The Headmaster corrected, unimpressed by the girl's inattention to detail after those crocodile tears from earlier.

"But yes, you could use alarte ascendare to even momentarily get the creature out of the way and clear a path for yourself."

At least she'd stopped crying.

"You're thinking. It's a good look." He had been worried--as worried as he could be for this lot--when he asked the question but the more they offered their answers, the more he was starting to think they were likely to survive. Of course, this wasn't defense class and he didn't care as much if they survived but it was useful information for another time.

"Why would I offer you a flying creature when the point is to use one of these two spells?" Not much critical thinking for a Ravenclaw. "How about in future you worry more about answering the basic question asked and less time worrying about loopholes and extenuating circumstances I never told you to worry about?"

Instead of wasting his time.

SPOILER!!: Grantham

"Congratulations. You've just used up your "insufferable know it all" card for the day. I trust you'll refrain from further nonsense now. I didn't ASK if there were better spells. THIS is the spell we're learning today. THIS is the focus of the lesson."

By the time he got done the reprimand, the man barely managed a grunt at her actual response.

Why these students needed to drift outside the scope of his questions was beyond him.

SPOILER!!: Cambridge
Definitely quoted myself. Totally.

Speaking of insufferable.

Yes. Making yourself a less desirable target does have its clear advantages. If the creature thinks your more effort than your scrawny frame is worth, there's a decent chance it'll find something better to do."

"I don't want to waste too much time on this but I will remind you all that when I ask questions, I expect an answer." BHe meant it. He wouldn't spend time on it so the man was already ready to move on but it was something that needed to be said.

"Secondly, when you answer, don't waste my time coming up with separate scenarios. Answer what I've given. Keep your answer within the scope of what I've said. I don't need the unnecessary comments on the practicality of the question or whether you think there are better spells." Looking at some of you specifically.

"Now let's get some work down." With a flick of his wand, the incantation appeared on the board for all to see.

"The wand movement is simple, you point upward." So simple, not even the first years could get it wrong.

Glancing down at the lesson plan once more, the Headmaster grunted. This would never do. The man shut the book.

With another flick of his wand, the ceiling rose higher. He conjured a few keys with fluttering wings. They flapped about at different heights. On the floor were a few baskets. Enough for everyone. "Those are keys. That thing at the top is the ceiling. I don't recommend hitting it on your way up to catch the keys but you may ultimately do what you want." The Healer could be put on standby.

"I've mentioned it does require intent and control. This activity will help you hone that before we move on to the main stage. Take a basket and put your name on it then get catching. Work alone, or in pairs. I don't care."

Should he tell them the keys were a bunch of slippery devils? They'd figure it out soon enough.

OOC: Mini activity is up!! There are keys flying around at different heights in the room. You may choose how high the one you go after is and whether you miss or not. They don't stay still and will be zipping around. Imagine a slightly slower version of a snitch. They go still once you get them into the baskets. Lemme know if you have any questions. We'll move on to the main in 48-72 hrs approx.

Oh pumpkin pastes, she had gotten her charms mixed up and said the wrong one to the headmaster himself. Now he would think she was just plan stupid. Gemma reminded herself which spell was which and started to listen more so she wouldn't do that again. When the next question came about she thought it would be easy to use the spell not to jump to a ledge she couldn't reach but just to bounce herself over the creature to go the other way. When someone brought up doing the spell on the creature she got confused again. Could they just throw themselves up, but wait... one spell was for them, the other someone else.

Was that correct....

Gemma was feeling lost and as a second year she didn't want to feel like a first year in the class. As he spoke about the spell they were going to do and practicing it she got a bit nervous, but would never show it. She took a deep breath and thought about the spell, Ascendio, Ascendio, she could do this. She would do this.

Pointing her wand upward she said, "Ascendio"

..... nothing

Violet sank back again to the floor of the classroom, this time with the end of a key trapped firmly between her fingers. It was like that plant that cut you if you grabbed onto it too tightly, but you could pick it if you plucked it gently. It was still trying to get away from her, but she managed to wrestle it into her basket, where it suddenly stopped and lay there quietly. "One down," she muttered to herself.

Flushed with success, Violet exclaimed, "Ascendio!" again, this time with a little too much vigor, and she shot up with too much force, nearly hitting the ceiling. She managed to catch herself with her hands and propel herself away from danger, but she had lost the chance to get another key, for she sank back to the floor before she had the chance to try for another one.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine was determined to secure at least one more key before the lesson moved on. This was why she was already holding her wand upwards, ignoring the small pain in her foot. “Ascendio,’’ came her mutter that sounded more like a command as opposed to the word simply being said. The Snakette’s feet lifted off the ground at a sharp speed, enough to distract her and almost made her forget her goal.

Not that it mattered.

The key that she had been aiming for… well, she did manage to grab it but it wriggled out of her grasp. Claudine hadn’t gotten the chance to grip it properly. She gritted her teeth in frustration as she watched the key fly out of her reach and she started to descend.

She’d get the next one.

Claudine was determined to.

Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!

Having gotten over the initial thrill of learning the new spell and the embarrassment of her terrible landing, Mamie decided to try to get a key now. She looked for one of the lower keys, then positioned her basket underneath it. She took a deep breath. She could do it. Not that hard.

Holding her wand out, Mamie flicked it upward, focusing hard on the key above her. "Ascendio!" she said firmly. She moved her other arm over her head--just in case she went straight for the ceiling--as she soared upward. She was a little far from the key she had aimed for, but she reached waaay far over and was able to barely snag the edge of it before falling back down.

Unfortunately that meant she was also waaay off balance for the landing. "Owwwww," she muttered, checking her elbows and knees for bruises. Shouldn't the professor have put out cushions or something? Realizing she was alright except for the bruises, she crawled over to her basket and shoved the key in. Did she really have to do that again? Sighing, Mamie stood up and straightened her uniform.

She could totally do this again.

Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Heath showed absolutely no sign of reaction to the barrage of harsh words from the headmaster. He’d learned long ago not to show emotion in the presence of a bully, and that was exactly what Headmaster Trent had become this term, just a grown-up version of a schoolyard bully! That, plus knowing what was coming ahead of time, somewhere made the disapproval sting less. Frankly, Heath was more concerned for his classmates than himself, especially Claudine. This would call for a caramellatte later and maybe a study buddy session to commiserate write their essays.

Heath was glad - okay, maybe “glad” wasn’t the right word, but at least less angry - when the headmaster finally tired of berating students and moved on to actually teaching the spell. He copied the information on the board down in his notes. The spell itself seemed pretty straightforward, the activity… not so much. So they were to use the spell to get the keys and hope that they don’t injure themselves in the process. Was the lack of cushioning the only cruel twist to this, or was there a trick with the keys themselves too? What did they do, bite? Scratch? Try to gouge people’s eyes out? Merlin only knew!

As Heath’s eyes momentarily flicked toward Professor Fuller-Thompson, he wondered what the original plan for the lesson had been and if this was even the spell the professor intended to teach. Whatever it was, he was sure it didn’t involve setting the students up for injury! The charms professor may not be a ray of sunshine, but he wasn’t cruel either. Heath didn’t have much time to think about it before the headmaster’s final words made him stifle a sarcastic laugh. Honestly, did he think they needed reminding of that?! It was obvious that Trent no longer cared about anyone but himself… not the students who would be injured by this joke of an activity, not Professor Recard who would have the extra work of treating said injured students, not Professor, not Professor Fuller-Thomspon who he was just ignoring.

Whatever, Heath thought bitterly as he left his seat to get a basket. If he doesn’t care about us, why should I care about him? He wasted no time in writing his name on it and drawing his wand. The sooner he got this done, the sooner he could get on with his life! His dark eyes scanned the room, searching for a target away from any furniture or other students that he might crash into on the descent. He spotted a high flying key near the back corner of the room. It would be hard to reach that one without hitting the ceiling, but he’d give it a go. “Ah-SEN-dee-oh,” he mumbled under his breath. “Ah-SEN-dee-oh… Ascendio…”

When he felt comfortable with the pronunciation, he pointed his wand up. Usually Heath’s spells needed extra gusto to work, but this time, he thought restraint was more important. A look of intense concentration crossed his face as he envisioned himself rising high enough to grab the key but no further. “Ascendio!” he said the incantation, immediately launching into the air. The good news was that he hadn’t overshot the target; the bad news: he undershot it, descending just before he could reach high enough to grab the key. Darn! Let’s try that again...

Carsyn raised an eyebrow skeptically at the 'headmaster'. So why even offer the ascendio as an option if you couldn't use it??? Also she was pretty sure he didn't exactly say it was out of reach ... not those exact words at least. The seventh year shook her head, determined to not let his tone get her down. At least she didn't have to write an essay; she had enough to worry about with NEWTS and if she was going to be accepted by a professional quidditch and/or quodpod team. What if the scope he gave was soooo narrow that it barely allowed for any creativity???

Well moving on though to an activity, this was one to prove her seeking skills - despite the fact that that there were a few promising seekers in this room - but it just meant she needed to show the edge on the competition. She was the oldest of them, so that gave her a better advantage, did it not??

Picking up a basket, she aimed the wand at herself, carefully eying where there was an abundance of flying keys before casting "Ascendio" on herself. As she'd done before, her body went up... right to a top most key and reached for it, snatching at it into her basket. One down.... how many more to go to prove she was a talented seeker.

But what goes up, must come down, which she did quite quicker than her upward pace. On her way down, the Gryffindor reached her arms out to slow the downward fall and also to hopefully snag another key or two. Which she did, clutching it on her fall down and once her feet touched the ground, stashing it into her basket. Two keys. Back up again?

Well, exxxccccuuuuse her for mistaking his question for a hypothetical. The Headmaster's reply only made Whitney raise a brow though. Nope, the man didn't need to know how much of a jerk she thought he was being right now. Not to mention that the thought would probably earn her detention, which she wasn't going for.

She also thankfully held in her "duh" at the mention of the ceiling and not hitting it. A stone ceiling to the head would definitely hurt, if it didn't knock you out. Also, how were they supposed to control the direction they went? Flapping their arms like a cartoon? Though, there was one idea that came to mind on how to catch one of those keys. She simply stepped under a large grouping of them, thinking they couldn't possibly all get away that quickly. "Ascendio!" And yes her wand was pointing upward and yes it did launch her into the air.

Also, the all stupid keys could in fact move away that fast.

Thankfully, the third time was the charm. Ha ha. Get it? Charm? The second time, Avalon had been so cautious with her cast that she barely rose a few feet off the ground. Not nearly high enough to grab any of the keys. The Ravenclaw practiced the spell on the floor a few more times to get used to the feel of it. Once a cluster of keys hovered ahead of her, she exclaimed, "Ascendio!" She zoomed into the air, brushing a key with her fingertips before the cluster scattered away. Avalon reached out as far as she could and finally snagged one key. As she headed back down to the ground, she tucked it carefully into her basket. But that moment of distraction was enough for her to forget to control her descent, so she hit the floor with a bit more momentum than she was expecting. Avalon rubbed at her knee, which had absorbed most of the force, as she gazed up at the ceiling to decide which key to go after next.

There was a LOT going on in this class right now. Morgan already wasn't the best focused student, but with everything going on around him - the professor on the floor, the headmaster taking over, loads of winged keys in the air, students flying up all around him to catch them - that he was having a hard time focusing on just one thing. It was a little like chaos, but a fun sort of chaos... so who would he be to not jump right into the fun??

"Ascendio!" he shouted as he pointed his wand up towards the ceiling. He immediately shot up, too fast and too high to catch any keys. In fact, he was so disordered as he shot into the air that he bumped at least one person on his way. It wasn't completely his fault though! There were so many people and keys in the air that it was kind of inevitable. But he yelled an apology over his shoulder anyway. "Sorry!"

And just before he started to descend, he remembered the whole reason he was up in the air - the keys! His hands made a mad scramble for the closest one, just slipping from his fingers before he slowly drifted back to the floor. Trying again!

Okay, so he didn’t get a key on the first try, but his spell had worked and more importantly, he didn’t hit the ceiling or anything else on the landing. Heath supposed things could be worse. He looked up at the key he missed, unsure whether or not he wanted to chance going higher and possibly crashing into the ceiling to grab it. No, too risky; he’d need to change strategies. His eyes scanned the ceiling, looking for two or more keys grouped close together. He found a couple of keys hovering near each other at the other end of the room and headed in that direction.

From his place on the ground, he scrutinized the two keys in the air. Aiming for the higher one seemed the best idea. That way, he could try to grab the lower one if he undershot the spell again. Heath took a quick look around for any nearby students or objects before aiming pointing his wand upward. “Ascendio!” he exclaimed, visualizing his target clearly in mind. Up into the air he went, higher, higher, but still not quite enough to reach the high key. He made a grab for the lower key, holding onto it for dear life as it tried to escape. No, you are not getting away from me! He thought angrily, his grip tightening. He had worked too hard to lose it now, and for all he knew, this could be the elder wand activity all over again. Knowing Headmaster Trent, it wouldn’t surprise him at all if everyone without a key at the end of the activity got sent to detention!

Heath’s struggle to hold on to the key shook his concentration. He landed hard on his bottom, but his hand still clutched the key firmly. Wasting no time, he picked himself up and deposited the key into his basket. In you go, you stupid thing! At least it finally held still in the basket. Glad to be rid of that troublesome key, Heath looked up at the ceiling again for more keys to catch.

Crimalla tried not to look too relieved when the Headmaster told her her answer was mostly right. Nevertheless, she couldn't help but BEAM with joy upon hearing this. Despite everything, she'd managed to give a good answer when so many of the others hadn't - and weirdest of all was she got it by good luck. Maybe this lesson wasn't going to be so hard after all.

Then they were moving on to the activity. Launching oneself into the air? "What if we fall?" she asked nervously, hoping she didn't sound too worried. "Or what if we land too hard and sprain our ankles?" Wait, was that how the poor professor had ended up on the floor?!

Scary as that thought was, Crimalla did not want to get in trouble for not participating in the activity. All around her, her classmates were launching themselves boldly into the air. They were all so much braver than she, or maybe they were all scared of the Headmaster. Though she noticed one student refusing to take part. Was that the son of the Headmaster? From what she'd heard, his name was Kale? But she wasn't sure. Either way, he wasn't participating. Was he also scared like she was? The pale first year glanced in his direction, trying not to be too obvious about it.

Focusing back on the touch challenge ahead of her, she decided to at least give it a try. "Ascendio!" she cried out. Surprisingly, she really did launch into the air. She soared high, but she moved so fast that the most she could do was flail her arms around. Something hard (a key?) smacked her in the forehead. "AHH!!!" she cried. It stung - but too badly. She toppled to the floor, landing disgracefully on her backside.

Rubbing her forehead where the key hit, Crimalla turned to the headmaster. "I don't think it's safe to go up there without eye protection. I got hit accidentally in the forehead. It really hurt." Well it didn't hurt that much, but it did sting. She then walked over to where Kale was sitting. She sat down next to him.

She wasn't trying to anger anyone. It's just that her forehead stung and she thought it was excusable if she didn't want to continue without proper face protection.

Valencia wrote her name down and attached it to the basket as instructed. She then looked up at the flying keys and at the basket in her hand.

The Headmaster just said to put keys in the basket, right? She didn't need to necessarily catch them with her hands?

She held the basket in one hand and aimed her wand straight up. "Ascendio" she said evenly as she shot up in the air over a few keys.

She then held her basket upside down to catch some keys on the way down. Scooping them was much more efficient than catching one at a time with her hands. It was also within the instructions he gave so ha! She figured the Headmaster would appreciate her thinking given how he'd been this term with other assignments.

Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!

One key down, infinite keys to go, pretty much. Mamie took a deep breath, then positioned herself and her basket of one key underneath a cluster of keys that were somewhat close together. She was hoping she could get more than one, since she felt like she was behind how many keys everybody else had. Focus...she tried to ignore the noise and motion of everybody else also trying to gather keys.

Locking one of the keys in her sights, Mamie flicked her wand upward like she'd been practicing. "Ascendio!" she said, softening her knees and holding out her free hand for balance. This time she zoooomed upward straight toward the key she had aimed at. Mamie grasped at it, missed, and swiped at it again as she started falling back down. She didn't even look to see if she'd caught the key, because now she was focused on landing. She did not want anymore bruises, okay? Trying to center herself above her legs, Mamie wobbled a bit when her feet hit the floor but actually managed to stay upright! It was a miracle! Mamie looked in her fist to see if she'd caught the key.

Nope, no key. Sighing, Mamie looked back up. She had been pretty successful this time, she thought. She didn't hurt hurself on the landing. She'd give it one more go.
"Ascendio!" she said firmly. Up, up she went, practically to the same spot near the ceiling as the last go. She tried closing her hands around the pesky key this time, trapping it between her free hand and her fist gripping her wand. And she caught it! Mamie let out a small squeal of delight mid-air, so pleased with herself she forgot to brace herself, and instead of sticking the landing this time she fell forward onto her knees. She quickly reached for her basket and tucked the key inside.

Two down!

Violet had learned from her mistakes not to grab at the keys too hard and not to ascend too forcefully, and had managed to snag a second, low-hanging key, but she had managed to earn herself a number of scratches and bruises in the process. Why did Hogwarts lessons always have to be so uncomfortable? First it was getting covered in garbage in Muggle Studies, and now this. But Violet was determined to try to get at least three keys before the exercise was over, so she straightened herself as best she could, and looked upward for a likely key.

Kale Trent had no interest in being reasoned with. He had sat down, taking a stand against his father’s tyranny, and that was where he fully intended to stay. It wasn’t a coup. His peers could continue on as they pleased. But Kale wanted to force his old man to hearhim. Even though he was silent.

When Phoebe joined him Kale wearily leaned into her embrace. She was a good one, that Fifi James. Take notes, father. Nice people treated people with respect.

Still. Kale shook his head and said, ”I’m fine here.” He would not be moving. Not for anyone. This was his great STAND! Or sit. Semantics.

When the second student joined him on the floor, Kale nodded at her. Not a coup, Dad. But maybe a demonstration.

Finally! Something she could do! They had tackled this particular charm during her last quarter in Ilvermorny, granted, she hadn't actually mastered the charm at all before she left - but at least she had the wand movement down!

She took a basket, wrote her name down on the space provided with a flourish, and found a nice empty area around the room to begin casting.

"Ascendio" she said, pointing her wand upwards, fully expecting to go zooming up to the ceiling. But nothing. Nada. Zilch.

Serena glared at her wand - as if it was the wand's fault in the first place - then looked around the room, watching as a few of her classmates succeeded in performing the charm.

"Ascendio!" she tried once more, a little more aggressively this time, jabbing her wand upward into the air. And before she could figure out what was happening, she was zooming violently upwards - the ceiling looking to appear closer and closer with each passing second.

Her mother had always said that she was a hard headed little witch, I guess it was time to test that theory.

Violet was sore and tired, but she was attempting one more "Ascendio". Her concentration was off now, though, and instead of rising straight up in the air, she went off at an angle, losing control of the direction. Dear Merlin! she hoped she would not collide with another student in mid-air...
