Default Map of Argyllshire

Hanging in a spot on the second floor is a framed map of Argyllshire. This old, out-dated map features the Scottish county and surrounding areas before they were abolished in 1975. It isn't clear why the map was originally hung up at Hogwarts and many still don't understand why it is still featured in the second-floor corridor today. If anything, it makes for a good conversation starter or an easy-to-find place to meet up with someone.

Even though the map's purpose at Hogwarts isn't clear, you might find looking at it worth your while anyway. The map reflects the weather that is occurring outside -- if it is raining, a thick and dark mass will cloud the map until it clears; the landscape of the map will turn green when bright and sunny; during autumn the landscape changes colour; and the map gradually starts to turn white and freezes the rivers, lakes, and lochs on the map when snow begins to fall outside. When it is nighttime, the colours on the map dim except for where the towns are. Pretty cool, right?

Inspiration didn't happen by sitting inside a bedroom all day. One needed to explore their surroundings in order to fully explore their mind, or at least such was the case for Verona who was eager to create solutions to the new invention scheme she had in mind.

She had noticed that many of the first year students would get lost walking about Hogwarts trying to find their way around. Heck, she even still got lost some of the time. It wasn't a difficult problem to solve, really. All it required was a map, but she wanted to create something special, something a little like the famous Marauders map.

Replicating the concept of the Marauders map wouldn't be too much of an issue with the right resources and skills. However, that was not her aim. She wanted to create something that had a direction system implicated within. In muggle terminology, she wanted to create something a bit like a GPS, yet without the battery requirement and without the need for complicated electronic codings.

The brunette's warm and milk chocolate eyes scanned the borders and lines scrawling across the large piece of parchment that was titled as the map of Argyllshire. She doubted most had noticed the map's existence, let alone knew much information regarding Argyllshire, itself, but she had a keen eye for the invisible. As to why she saught this as a place for inspiration, well, she believed that a good inventor never ignored the old when creating something new. As many historians would say, history is for learning from the past's mistakes.

Drewett was on his way to the library. The Ravenclaw had a fair bit of studying to do in preparation for OWLs, and he also had to organize his class notes for his study group with Kenz. It was better to come prepared, plus he was always willing to share his notes with everyone else. It was easier to fact-check and compare. There were so many perks of being a Ravenclaw. Everyone just valued knowledge so much. At the same time, he liked being able to study with his friends. To him, there was no better way to be productive.

The fifth year had only taken a quick detour on the second floor so he could use the loo. When duty and nature call, one mustn't turn them down. But with that done, he was back on track to the library. Slinging his bag over his shoulder, he made his way to the nearest staircase to the fourth floor.

That was, until he saw a familiar face standing by the Map of Argyllshire. Drewett recognized her as the new girl in their year. They were in the same house too, which just made him a tad bit awkward as he passed by. But she looked so...engrossed on the map that it made him wonder if she was either looking for a specific county or if she was simply admiring how detailed it was. Back as a first year, he had done the latter. Drewett was the type to analyze all the details of anything, everything. "You lost?" He stopped for a moment to ask. Just in case. Not to be a total creep or anything. She was new, after all.

What fascinated Verona most about the map before her, was the way the rivers appeared frozen and ice-cold. She assumed this was to mimic the current Winter season and admired how the depiction of something so simple was so magical. Simplicity was often the key to practicality, some would say. She agreed with this concept but believed that this was more to be kept in mind when referring to an end product. The design and work behind a product were often where the complexities lay and it was in these complexities that Verona found the most joy. The nooks and crannies, the difficult formulaic set-ups....this was where the intellectual challenge of inventions was to be found.

As for the current map before her, she felt it didn't quite stimulate challenge. Nonetheless, the brunette began reaching for the buckle of her bag so that she could take some notes down in her favorite pocketbook. This book was made of moleskin and was a most unique tone of indigo, similar to that of a blueberry.

Before she could even reach for her buckle, however, she sensed a figure approaching and instead found herself placing her hands gently at her sides. The young boy was a face she'd seen often in the dorm room and, yet, she couldn't help re-examine his features. His face appeared youthful, yet not quite that of a child's. It wasn't the lack of facial hair or aging lines that made her think so. No. She felt that it was something about his eyes that made it seem so.

Her eyes were apparently that of a lost soul, or so the boy thought.

Verona shook her head but let the corners of her lips softly lift upwards into a light smile.

"Just admiring the aesthetics of this map," she responded. "In fact, I'm looking at it to try solve the problem of being lost in this castle."

She wasn't going to go into the specifics but she had no issue telling him simply what her idea was.

Drewett's eyes once again laid on the map. He hadn't actually been here lately. He had always passed by the map when he was on this corridor, but he'd never actually stopped to admire it all over again like a firstie would. Like his firstie self would. Looking at it again gave him a tiny wave of nostalgia. He'd remembered a couple of the names on the map, from neighbouring counties to islands to rivers. All the in-between. They were all familiar names that he'd came across back then. Recalling them now was like digging a treasure buried in his brain a long time ago. It was, in some way, refreshing.

He turned back at the girl. Drewett knew she was a year mate. A new one who had joined them this term. She was a dorm mate of Kenzie's, Hanna's, Kieran's, Evan's. "Verona, right?" He asked. The Ravenclaw boy always seemed like he wasn't paying attention to details but, let's be real, Drewett was a fan of details. Even the tiniest ones. Remembering her name and other people's names came easy to Drewett most of the time, especially if he shared classes with them. He could take down notes on his parchment and also remember the names being called out in class.

He could feel her eyes on him. Drewett offered a small sheepish smile as he reached out to run his fingers through his hair to keep himself slightly busy. He wasn't so used to being examined. Attention, in any form, was still a lot for him to take in considering name changes.

"Yeah, th-the map is quite elegant...also very detailed," Drewett shared, glancing back at the map briefly. Look, there was the lighthouse in the Mull of Kintyre. Then back at the girl, his head tilted slightly to the side. "How so?" How was the map of Argyllshire, a wide county, supposed to solve getting lost in Hogwarts, a castle? It wasn't doubt. He was just very curious.
