Astronomy Lesson: Here comes the Sun The shadows were lengthening as Kalen walked around the chairs he had set up in a semi circle in front of him, the sun was in its decline and soon the world would be darkened again, but there was still a few hours of sunlight left, enough time for the lesson the Astronomy Professor had set up down by the banks of the lake. He nodded at his work and made sure the mild heating charms were in place before he took his place beside a small table that was his makeshift desk for the afternoon. Despite the early October date, it was getting a bit chilly and the wind off the lake was brisk, but the charms should hold and he could increase them if was needed. There were no food or drinks present at this lesson, even his own precious cup of tea wasn’t anywhere to be seen. There may have been new leadership, but Kalen wasn’t taking any chances. He leaned against the table and checked his watch again. Students should be arriving at any moment. OOC: Welcome to Astronomy class!. Just remember that even though this is the first Rp’d class this is not your first class with Professor Kennedy! Lesson Progession: Greetings and First Question Replies and Second Question Main Activity |
One of the things Taddy was glad about having the Astonomy lessons was that he didn't have to worry about only getting little sleep afterward. Given last term where they were required to have early morning runs after late lessons. This meant Taddy was calm and at peace no matter what time of the day the lessons too place now. Theoretically, of course. He did love good sleeps. Anyways, he arrived at the classroom with a friendly smile, "Hello Professor." He was cool. Auntie Elisa had shared stuff with him regarding the Professor before his first year and he never disappointed. After his hellos, he went on to take his place before the lesson began. |
Oh, the lake. All sorts of memories of this place, some of them really not good. But here Abra was anyway, present and correct and ready for learning... sort of. Maybe. Like, just a little bit. Or very much so, if anyone asked. He was all bundled up against the early October weather, but it seemed to be less of an issue once he was actually at the lesson area; Abra suspected warming charms, and he was glad for them. Even so, he kept his robes (equipped with warming charms of their own) held tightly around himself as he approached one of the chairs and sat down. He wasn't very good at shaking off the chill. "Good afternoon, Professor Kennedy," he said, respectfully as ever. "Or... good evening. No, afternoon. Yes, good afternoon, final answer." Okay, shut up now, Abraham. |
As the Sun began to set and darkness grew closer and closer, Torii headed down to the area where the Astronomy lesson would be held. Reaching it, she felt a sudden warmth take over her. She smiled. She loved it when her professors took the time to have warming charms at their lessons. Well, to a certain extent. There was Dolly Dopple, after all... Looking around, she noticed there were only four people present, herself included. One of those was the professor, her Head of House. "Hello, Professor Kennedy," she said. Not really wanting to stand right in the middle and in the thick of things, the fourth year moved off to the side to the general area where the other two students were standing. ...and so began that awkward moment where the somewhat-still-the-new-girl stood around and shifted her weight from one foot to the other while she waited around. |
Feeling very happy that Astronomy was back with Professor Kalen, Hanna had also noticed the lack of food and drink present at lessons. It was quite okay, though. She didn't need food or hot chocolate to keep her going. Now that she didn't have to use all of the energy of calories on the forced running they had to do, the calories were able to stick around and help with her brain functioning. It was preferred this way. She saw the semi-circle of chairs down by the lake as she approached. "Hello Professor Kalen," she said. That was another thing she was very glad had disappeared. She went towards a chair towards the left, but not quite in the centre, her bag full of textbook, notebook, quill, and ink. Her wand was secured in its holster. |
Camilus didn't know if Astronomy was going to be something he was going to be good at. Not focusing too much on that, he walked towards where the Professor was, noticing two of his classmates from DADA. "Hi Professor, my name is Camilus," he said, "Hi Torii, hi Abra. I'm from your DADA class, my boat passed by both of you guys on the river." Even though Camilus was a first year, he had always been a people person, making friends with whomever crossed his path. |
Head Girl in the hooooouse. Chloe tried to be sedate and dignified as she made her way to the lake, but she was so happy to be outside and the sun was shining and it was nippy while the leaves changed and and and it was just beautiful out here. So perhaps she was skipping a bit as she approached the professor and his semi circle of chairs. "Good day to you, Professor. Have you invited Mr. Henry to join us today? I think he'd be an excellent student if given half a chance." She took a seat with a smile, but not before offering a general wave toward the lake. Maybe the Giant Squid would visit. |
If there was any class that always took part in the later half of the day, it was astronomy and today was no different. It wasn’t late in the evening when moon and star gazing was prime, but it was still afternoon as Septimus made his way down to the lake as the lesson announcement instructed was to be where they were to meet. The fourth year was grateful for the warmth of the present charms as he came to the desks set up by the waiting professor, pushing away the chill he had dealt with across the grounds. “Good afternoon Professor,” he greeted Professor Kennedy as he took in his surroundings. The boy finally choosing a seat at one of the empty spots. |
As Skyler got to class, she took in her surroundings before looking at Professor Kenedy. "Afternoon Professor," she said. Was this one of the ones who was here last year? "I believe it was." Again, with the voice. Skyler blinked her eyes. Again, with the voices. Skyler chose a seat towards the front as her world seemed to turn black. No, she wasn't physically fainting or anything but it seemed to her at least, she was going to be taking a nap. On the outside, she kind of stared off into space, her arms crossed as she waited for the lesson to start. |
Astronomyyyyyyyyyyy. Not one her best subjects. Not her worst either, though. Just an okay subject, but she was quite fascinated by all of it, so really it was just an elective "for fun" class for Natalie. She was never really bothered by poor grades because at least she was having fun. And that was why she was looking forward to class that day. Evening. "Hi professor," Natalie greeted with a small smile as she entered the room. Then she took one of the seats that was set up and pulled her robes tighter around her. The sun was setting and she was probably about to get cold as heck. |
Quote:
Oh there was a first year boy. She approached him and said :'Hi..may I sit here?,' she asked, pointing to a seat next to him. She would rather sit with a first year than the others. Not that others weren't nice, but it was easier being with someone who was an inexperienced as she was. |
They were already a month into the school year. Tessa felt like time was flying but, to be fair, it had already been a.....very interesting term so far. There had been the love-at-first-sight potion at the start-of-term feast, boyfriend related things (!!!!!!!) the next day, and the Polyjuice situation, which had landed her in quite a bit of trouble. All in all? Eventful. Now she was walking down towards the lake, where Astronomy class was taking place. It was a bit chilly but that didn't bother Tessa. As she expected, heating charms had been put in place ahead of the students' arrival and it wasn't nearly as cold by the lake, despite the wind whipping off the water. "Good afternoon, Professor," she greeted Professor Kennedy with a smile before taking a seat with the other students. |
Astronomy was a subject Tina neither loved nor hated; she felt entirely neutral toward it, like most things at Hogwarts to be honest. It was going to take her more time to get an accurate feel for the school and decide what (and who) she did and didn't like. Theoretically this had all the makings of a good lesson. Professor Kennedy so far hadn't done anything to scare or annoy Tina this term, and she couldn't help but feel a little excited when she learned it was going to be an outdoor lesson. She always liked when the professors at Beauxbatons held class outside! The dark-haired Ravenclaw made her way to the lake, taking in the sights and the fresh air as she approached. No dead animals, no clones, no scary headmaster... so far, so good! Tina could work with this. "Hello, Professor Kennedy," she greeted with a small smile - which coming from her was a huge compliment, as Tina Dantes wasn't a particularly smiley person. She took a seat at the end of the semi circle, setting her bag gently down on the ground beside her chair. She had to admit between the time and setting of this lesson, her curiosity was piqued! |
This was one of Mary's favorite subjects. She hadn't found much interest in the muggle world, but now that she realized there was so much to know, she was enamored. Finding her way to a seat in the front, near the teacher, she brightly, but quietly, said, "Hello Professor Kennedy." With that, she turned her eyes up to the stars. Within minutes, she had spotted Cygna and Hercules. It really was a good night for this. She continued looking, searching for something, something not so easy to spot. |
Daisy quickly made her way to the banks of the lake. The air was invigorating which she liked. Thankfully, the heating charms that Professor Kennedy had cast didn't have the effects of a faulty sauna. "Hello, Professor Kennedy," Daisy greeted the Astronomy teacher, smiling as she did so. She then found a seat a couple of seats from Tina and sat down. |
Zoryn Spinnet didn't care for Astronomy. The only star on her radar was Justine Janvier, and unfortunately they never seemed to talk about her in this particular class. A true travesty if you ask one, Z. Spinnet. But unfortunately the class was on her schedule, and she'd be in attendance today. At least being outside would mean a change in scenery. The classrooms always got stuffy after the first week. Walking past her Professor, she gave the man a brief nod in acknowledgement and made her way over to the the semi-circles of chairs. After surveying the students who had already taken a seat (an unimpressive bunch), she decided to sit closer to one of the sides on her own. The seats next to her were reserved for friends or pretty faces. Whichever came first. |
hiii Zoryn So, class was by the lake today. Vita had known that, she'd completely known, only she'd forgotten somewhere over the course of the week and made her way up to the tower only to remember that wasn't where she needed to be. WHY HER?! ... ... ... When she finally did make it to the meeting spot, she was out of breath, hair disheveled, and feeling like the world's biggest dummy. The fresh air felt nice, at least. It could help cool her down after the unnecessarily rigorous exercise session she'd just put her body through. "H-hello Professor." The fact that she didn't even seem to be late was some kind of miracle. Hurrying to a seat with her head down, Vita settled in and took some deep, calming breaths. She was good. She hadn't missed anything. She'd found a seat next to... Zoryn Spinnet It wasn't that she was afraid of the girl or anything. The sixth year hadn't really interacted with her at all. It was just...well, Zoryn had a reputation for mischief and Vita wasn't exactly the type to find that fun. She didn't have anything planned for this lesson, did she? The brunette side-eyed the older girl briefly and then caaaaasually looked the other way. |

Another hour, another lesson. This was the life Odaline wanted at the castle. Lessons and learning. She just needed to get rid of the other students. Then it would be a blessing. A whole education to herself. All the information she would ever need and no one would get hurt. And maybe she wouldn't be disappointing her parents already like she was. She'd settled into greeting the Professors some way when joining their class, so Professor Kennedy got a small smile. A hint of one. But it was there if you looked close enough. |
Drewett liked astronomy. The subject matter was something that had always intrigued him, and he always liked being able to expand his knowledge about the world, the universe, and beyond that. And he was also quite glad there were no longer required jogs in the morning because that meant he didn't feel all exhausted during astronomy, which was usually the last class in his schedule. Hugging his books, Drewett made his way to the lake, quite thankful he didn't have to climb up more stairs to the astronomy tower. It was easier going down the stairs than up, fortunately for him. "Good afternoon, sir...." The Ravenclaw greeted the professor with a tiny nod before taking a seat beside Septimus, who got a small smile as greeting. The inferi better not start climbing out of the lake tonight. They were no longer there, Drewett was aware, but events during his second year were still vivid in his memory...and overall awful. |
If he hadn't spotted the rest of the students streaming out of the front door towards the Lake, there was a good chance Józef would have headed all the way up to the Astronomy Tower and stayed there for the next hour, wondering where the Professor and the class were, but not likely caring that they were missing. As it were, he only followed out of a need to know what was going on. Curiosity. Nosiness. Call it what you will, it had come in handy there and then (even if he was a little disappointment that he hadn't had an hour or so in the tower to himself). He smiled at the Professor and then found a seat near the back of the group, dropping his bag next to him and spinning his wand through his fingers. |

As he traipsed down towards the lake, tugging his cloak tighter around him because CHILLY, Max looked up at the sky. The sky that was pretty much still daytime. It was a bit of a weird time for an Astronomy lesson, wasn't it? "I can't see any stars, Professor," he pointed out when he got close enough to the rest of the group and the make shift semi-circle. He was glad to see that SO FAR, he was the only Maxton Carden in attendance. And eeeeh. This was always the worst part about lessons. Where to sit.......... After a little deliberation, he found a spot by himself, as faaaaaar away from that first year that liked to growl at people he could get. |
Quote:
He took a seat faaaaar away from the first year crew. She smiled at him and then turned to face her fellow first years. |
So Astronomy, yeah? Lucas wrapped his coat a little tighter around himself as he walked down to the lake. It was almost hot chocolate weather, he could FEEL it. And he silently wished he did have a cup of hot chocolate with him while he was walking but certain, uh, events from last term kept coming back to him and he decided that maybe that wasn’t such a good idea. Still. He knew what he was getting after this lesson was over. Mmm. Approaching the spot by the lake, he gave the Professor a small smile. "Hello Professor," he said quietly before choosing a seat riiiiiiight over......... there. Yeah. Not too close to the lake but close enough that he could look over if the class got boring. Maybe. But if they really were learning about stars then maybe he didn’t need to bother. |
SPOILER!!: replies Kalen was pleased with the turnout and and after he had greeted everyone, and looked back over his shoulder to make sure no one else was coming, he turned back around to fully face his students, a smile on his face. “Hello and welcome to class, I know this may seem a weird time and place to be holding class, but we will get to that in a bit of course.” He said as he moved to carefully lean on the table that he was using as a desk, while he was mostly sure it was sturdy, he really didn’t want it to collapse during class, so he wasn’t putting his full weight on it. “Now to ease us into the lesson, I have a pretty simple question, Tell me what you know about Stars, anything and everything?” He said with a grin as he looked at them. OOC: The question is simple, “What do you know about Stars.” You all have about 36 hours ish or so to answer this before we move on! Thanks everyone so much for coming! I really appreciate it! |
It would take a long time for Caolan to get used to the schedules for lessons at this school. He had been here a few weeks already and he still wasn’t used to the early mornings and late evenings and all the in-betweens. It wasn’t like a muggle school at all and as he stood at the Astronomy lesson waiting for the class to start he had to resist the urge to yawn. What? He was a teenage boy and quite frankly he needed a nap. Astronomy was a lesson that despite his Da’s distaste for the subject (mostly because he was terrible at it) Caolan had a weird interest in the stars and planets and.. well it was kinda muggle wasn’t it? There was no need for wands or charms in this lesson, it was just them and the night sky. Or not in this case. There weren’t many people that he recognised and so he was alone for today. He didn’t mind too much, he didn’t really know anyone enough to consider them true friends. Time would hopefully change that. The first question was pretty simple and very open. It left a lot to interpret and he really didn’t have to think too hard about what would be considered the right answer because there was so much he could say. He raised his hand. “Stars are basically big balls of burning gasses like Hydrogen in the solar system. There’s so much gas in a star that it is able to hold itself together by gravity.” There was more, like the sun was a big star, but Caolan couldn’t really be bothered to reel off a load more and he didn’t want to get overly complicated (if he could). |
Ahhhhh, we see what you did there Professor Kennedy. He'd only just gone and forgotten about the biggest and most obvious star in the sky right now. Max squinted in the direction of the sun for a moment before raising his hand in the air. Stars. "There's a lot of them." Okay, perhaps he should elaborate. "Like.... a lot of them. Millions. Actually, billions." A lot. Which was all very cool and all but honestly, were they ever going to have a lesson about martians? |
Natalie had been watching students file in and was mentally eyeing Maxton and Vita for not sitting by HER, but she also knew she was selfish and they... obviously had other friends, so she just sat there and toyed with her scarf instead. Then class started and Natalie perked. Oh, an easy question! Natalie liked those! She was very good at those. So she rose her hand. "The stars are so far away that any one of the stars we see at night could actually be dead and we just won't know for like, a hundred years because the light takes so long to get to us." Did that make sense? Even if it didn't really, Natalie was pretty sure EVERYONE knew that about stars, so it wasn't really... groundbreaking. |
Going to try something I'm gonna stick with this and see what happens "Skyler" blinked and opened her eyes. She looked around and wondered where they were. Someone that looked like a professor was asking a question. What did she know about stars? Well, a lot actually. What did you want to know first? "Well professor," "Skyler's" voice came out as an American teenage male's voice. "Our sun is a white dwarf," they said. |
Torii smiled at her Head of House, and then with a nod, she took a seat. She hadn't really gotten to know Kennedy on a personal level, but from what she could tell, he was going to be an awesome professor and Head of House. She settled into her seat just as the last few people were arriving and the lesson was starting. So...stars. Simple enough. The first thought that came to Torii's mind had to do with the Sun being a star. Somebody beat her to that one, though. Another thought came to mind, and she raised her hand. "Stars might look just one color, but they can be classified red, blue, and yellow," she said, raising her hand. She didn't know much about that, though, because all stars looked the same color to her. Still, she'd heard there were other colors. Something like that. |
A s t r o n o m y. The thing about Astronomy...was that Aaron wasn't the best at it. It was one of those subjects that required a focus he rarely used for anything other than quidditch and music. And bees. Definitely bees. ...but stars were beautiful, and he wanted to learn. So, it was try, and then try some more! A small mantra he held onto as he neared the lake. A breeze danced around him, fluffing up his hair in silly tufts. October in Scotland...It could be worse. So, he tugged his school robe tighter around his body, not really blocking out the weather, but vowing not to complain too much about it. There were charms in place, after all. That was nice of the man. "Hi, Professor Kennedy!" He moved to take a seat in the semi-circle, next to Chloe. ...And just in time! "Stars make up constellations... and those are important to agriculture." Like bees! Yep, that's all he had. |
Mary felt very confident in this class. This was, in fact, the only class yet that she greets the professor in. Settling into her seat and looking back towards the professor, Mary wondered how to answer the question. The already knew a lot. "I know that the stars are large, hot balls of gas in the universe. They are impossible to count because the universe is infinitely expanding. They are constantly being born and dying. The death of a star is often a violent event, while the birth generally happens in groups with other stars. The closest star to us is the sun, and everything in the solar system orbits around it, though we aren't the only star with a system of planets." |
Kennedy got it. He understood. Afternoon, it was definitely still afternoon. Abra smiled, and nodded his head. Hearing his name, he turned to find the speaker and saw a first year from his house. Smiling, he greeted the boy. "Hi, uh..." He'd just said his name, but Abra hadn't been tuned in at that exact moment. Still, he didn't let that stop him from being polite. "Nice to meet you!" Again. Because they'd no doubt met briefly at least on the night of the opening feast, when he and Stasya had escorted the first years to Gryffindor Tower, but that would have been very brief. But then the lesson was starting, so Abra turned his attention to Professor Kennedy again. The question was, thankfully, a simple one, and with six years of Astronomy lessons under his belt, Abra felt more or less prepared for it. He raised his hand and spoke. "Every element comes from stars. I think... that's what nuclear fusion does. Or is." ... "Or... does." Did the specifics matter? Probably. |
Camilus started getting nervous, a feeling that he was not used to. He didn't know anything about stars, never having actually considered studying anything that was outside of his reach. "Okay, I'm sorry professor, but I'm just going to be honest. All I know about stars is that they are in space....," Camilus said feeling very awkward. Was everyone going to stare at him now? |
Chloe gave Aaron a huge grin as he took up a spot near her. Hooray for friendly faces! And hooray for friendly professors. She appreciated that Professor Kalen wasn't weirded out by the idea of a Giant Squid popping in, so she decided to hold out hope that it would actually happen. But time to put on a participatory face. Chloe raised her hand. "If you go out for astrology, the specific position of the stars and planets in the heavens can tell us all sorts of... things." Chloe believed in divination, had to because of her mum and stuff, but she wasn't keen on astrology. |
They were really learning about STARS?! Lucas BEAMED, silently glad that the Carden boy had mentioned it AND glad that it was happening. Maybe he didn't need to sit near the Lake, after all. Instinctively, he looked up and around the sky to see if he could spot any, maybe even squinted a little just in case, but no such luck. Were they going to see one later? Just like the eclipse? He hoped so! As for the question, he eventually looked back down and raised his hand up in the air. "Well, they usually form constellations with the brightest ones being given their own names and they are beautiful!" Which was two (?) facts and not the best facts - Airey Flamsteed might not be very impressed if he knew - but he was CONFIDENT about them. Mhm. |

Patrick was thrilled to be back in his favorite classroom. Astronomy was his favorite he was often in the reading room or out observing the stars. He wasn’t as good as Kennedy but he tried that was for sure. And it was always interesting to learn the stories involving constellations. He had slipped into his seat and began to write the first questionbof the lesson on husband paper. Always the copious note taker. He raised his hand, “stars can help you navigate.” he had learned that both at hogwarts and with his muggle friends back in the states when he went home for the summer. It was wild what transferred over. |

Malachi smiles gently at Camilus as he talks. "They’re beautiful right?" |
Once upon a time, Regina would've been excited for every Astronomy lesson; it was one of her favorite subjects, and she'd loved night time because of it. The stars, the moon, everything about it was beautiful. After the past couple of years, however, night time had lost its appeal to her for certain reasons. And so her feelings toward Astronomy were a little more complicated now, as evidenced by her now usually tense posture and her shorter answers. Longer answers meant more attention on herself, and she wanted nothing of the sort. But then, that wasn't limited to just Astronomy class. That was how she was most of the time nowadays. Still, she would participate, if only at the bare minimum. She needed to maintain a better grade level for her NEWT year after her less-than-impressive grades from her one year at Ilvermorny last year. So she raised her hand. "Stars have different life stages," she said. "Supernovas, red giants, stuff like that." |
*wink* "They're basically made of cosmic dust," was Archer's answer to the question. Yes, she had been here the entire time, just weirdly silent. Also, no antics this time, Zoryn? Boooooo! And again with the mosquitos. She was absolutely convinced that's why she kept itching. Might be time to invest in some bug spray, she thought as she scratched on a spot on her arm. |
Gunnar would guess that they wouldn't do any star-gazing tonight since class was being held outside before dusk. But he wasn't upset about the time they'd be having class. He still got up fairly early, so early classes were easier as opposed to midnight class. Though once class started, the fourteen year old found it rather interesting that they were going to talk about stars anyway. Or at least the first question would suggest that. After a few of his classmates gave their answers, Gunnar raised his hand. "Unlike the moon which shines because of reflecting the sun's light, stars shine because of energy released from gravitational friction." Or that was the general gist of it, at least. |
Harri had been here aaaaall along, mostly silent because she was trying to see if the sky when you were inside a magical school was any different as compared to when you were outside. Turns out, it was pretty much the same. She found it kind of lame, to be honest. After offering the Professor a greeting, a wave and a smile, she plopped next to a vaguely familiar boy (Taddy) who she gave another smile too. He wasn't a Gryffindor but she was sure she had seen him somewhere before. Anyway. Stars! This lesson was about stars? What did Harri know about stars? Well. "I know that stars are very old, Professor. They are also really, really far away. Oh, and the sun is a star." There. Brilliant. |
Odaline really just didn't like to make conversation with people, it was nothing more than that. And she rarely smiled, so it wasn't something against the Professor when she didn't give him a big one like others had done. If adults were bothered by her lack of greeting, then they had very little going on in their lives. Clearly. But her priority was learning and showing what she already knew. (Which, in terms of magic, wasn't a lot) So hand raised, she offered the simplest of answers. "You see them in the sky." Not too long, not too short. Couldn't say she wasn't contributing. |
Having been here all along, Rylee was content for the moment in take down a few notes about 'stars'. What did she know about stars? Well not as much as her brother did but she knew a fair amount. All of which had been said already but that didn't stop her from writing everything down, when her gaze wasn't drifting towards the sky itself that is. "If you are lost you can always use the North Star to help you find your way back," Rylee answered raising her hand into the air. Or at least those that knew how to use the stars for navigation could do that. |
Ah, stars. Perhaps this lesson was a little bit too general and broad to study in one meeting, but Drewett gave his full attention to the class and to Professor Kennedy. And no, he didn't think it was a weird venue and schedule for the class. For the Ravenclaw, anyone can study astronomy in any time of the day no matter where they are. As for the question, Drewett gave it a little bit more thought before he shared his insights. He, first, listened to what everyone had to say, writing small notes on his parchment as he did. Except for the obvious ones, because he knew there were a lot of stars. Once he was able to catch up, the Ravenclaw raised his hand. "Stars d-don't actually 'twinkle'..." Drewett shared. And he knew why they didn't twinkle, but he left that one wide open for anyone else who wanted to add more. |
What did Vita know about the stars? Well, she liked to look at them. She knew they could set a romantic scene. She knew people liked to wish on them. All of these things came to her mind, but none seemed appropriate to share, so she listened instead, hoping something more intelligent would come to mind. ... Oh! "The smaller the star, the longer it lives. The bigger ones burn out faster." There, that was a fact. Nice, right? |
It was so refreshing seeing Professor Kennedy back in class. She had been so used to those awful imposter professors, that even a month in to the school year, she was still beaming ear to ear whenever she saw him - and the other professors who'd returned to their positions - because it meant that nightmare was finally OVER. She raised her hand in regards to his question. "Well, you might think that red giants are hotter, and the smaller, blue ones are cold - but it's actually the opposite. The blue stars are hotter," she answered. ANNND that was pretty much all she knew about stars. |
Stars! Charlie was liking Astronomy, cos she actually knew a thing or two about them (more than any other subject, at the very least) and could confidently -- more confidently, at least -- answer questions. So, stars. What did she know about them? She thought about this for a second -- just to formulate a solid answer -- and then raised her hand high. "Well, professor, the sun is a star, and I'm pretty sure it's the closest one to us, too, or just really really big. The other stars make cool pictures called constellations, like the big and little dippers." She could get used to this knowing-what-to-say thing. |
Oh Mark knew something really cool about Stars! He learned about it from an Old Muggle Song!! Or well he learned about it from an old Muggle song and then was told that song was wrong and it was different from Different song that corrected the first one. "Stars aren't simply made out of gas," Mark chirped up. "They're called Gaseous Giants, but really they're made out of plasma! It's like a weird gas that's not really gas but it is." Uh he was going off a bit here. "It's complicated Science." Mark just finished. Figuring he didn't want to confuse himself or anyone else. He was going to need to listen to that song again. |
SPOILER!!: Replies! Kalen smiled at all the answers, he was really pleased with them and their knowledge, even the ones who didn’t fully know much. They were trying, and that’s all that mattered. “All of your answers were very good, and I appreciate your communication. Even if you didn’t know much about Stars, you do now. ” He said with a soft laugh as he looked around. “A few of you mentioned that we have a star close to us, and that is of course the Sun, which is why this lesson is taking place outside, in the afternoon and why we aren’t up in the Astronomy Tower at Midnight making star charts.” He grinned as he looked at them. “Now I could launch into a lengthy lecture about the sun, and bore most of you to tears, but I’m not going to do that. Today at least. We will be studying the sun for the next few months as there is too much to learn for one lesson, so be sure to read up on the sun in your books for future lessons. Today however. ” He paused as he looked at them. “We are going to be looking at the practical uses of the sun. So tell me, How is the sun useful to us in our world, you can tell me modern uses, or old time uses, but how we we make use of this star we call the Sun? ” He asked with a smile. OOC: Thank you guys so much for your participation! We, Kalen and I really appreciate it! The question for this part of the lesson is “How is the sun useful to us.” Thanks! You will have 36 hours ish To answer this before we move on. |
"Some people capture the light and heat it produces with different technologies and use that to light, heat and/or cool their homes, or produce electricity; when a single family does it just for their own use it's known as 'going off the grid'. It's supposedly supposed to save money...." Archer had her doubts, though. I mean, wouldn't you just end up pouring those savings back into maintaining the equipment, which was expensive in the first place? And heaven forbid you lived somewhere there was a lot of hail, high winds or tornados. You'd be replacing those suckers after every storm, practically! A thought that made her give a small chuckle. |
catch up + Question 2 Tessa couldn't possibly answer the first question in full because she knew a LOT about space, okay? And that wasn't supposed to sound boastful. Her knowledge wasn't complete buuuuut it was heavily informed by her boyfriend's, Alfie, who LOVED the stars and space and stuff. She would give one big, nice, interesting fact. Raising her hand, and sort of echoing/adding on from the answer the first year, Charlie, gave, she said, "Most of the stars that we can see at night, except, like, a few really faint ones, are actually BIGGER and BRIGHTER than Sun. The Sun only seems bigger and brighter because it's closer to us." Quote:
Oooooh, cool, that meant her sun and stars fact had related quite nicely to the lesson's topic. ANYWAY. Yeah, how was the Sun useful? Maybe it was one of the more obvious answers but Tessa was going to give it anyway. "The sun can be used to tell the time. I think Hogwarts actually has a sundial somewhere, right? They designed to cast shadows that will, uh, line up with a certain time." |
catching up on question 1/ question 2 Tina had just finished digging in her bag for her textbook, quill, and notebook when a Hufflepuff girl (Daisy) sat near her. She didn't really know her yet, but she seemed like a nice person so far... definitely nicer than those idiots behind the polyjuice prank in charms class! Seriously, what had that accomplished besides trouble, lots and lots of trouble? Tina nodded politely to acknowledge the other girl, but class started before she had time to say hello. Oh well, she was shy about initiating conversations anyway... Tina listened intently to Professor Kennedy, half-expecting the man to explain the unusual setting for the lesson, but that didn't happen yet; he said he'd get to that later. Why couldn't he tell them now and be done with it? Tina wasn't sure whether to be intrigued or slightly annoyed. She hated not knowing! Unanswered questions led to uncertainty; uncertainty led to upheaval, and so on... Kennedy's question had her even more curious. So, something to do with stars at a time when they couldn't see any stars? Tina thought. What could that be? The dark-haired Ravenclaw was half listening to her classmates' answers, half thinking up her own. She didn't want to repeat what had already said; it was unnecessary and, in her opinion, showed a lack of effort. Her mind filtered through her knowledge of stars until... her hand went up. "Most stars are red dwarfs," Tina said when called on. "Red dwarfs are less than half the mass of the sun and burn with 1/10,000 the energy." Oops, that was technically more than one fact, wasn't it? Tina felt a little stupid when she heard the subject of the lesson. The sun, of course! It was so obvious... or at least it should've been if she didn't get so caught up overthinking it! Okay, this could be interesting. And Kennedy said they were going to be studying the sun for months. Did that mean they were going to have more outdoor daytime classes? Tina was so up for that! Practical uses for the sun? Tina thought for a minute, but both of the answers she came up with off the top of her head were taken. Now she really had to think harder. Ooh, she had something! Her hand went up and she said, "In some parts of the world, people use sunlight to treat drinking water. They fill plastic bottles and leave them in the sun for at least six hours; the process is supposed to kill bacteria..." Though personally, Tina doubted it. |
This was awesome! Astronomy was pretty much a muggle subject as it was all questions and no magic needed. He hoped there would be a practical element too of course for he wasn’t sure he could pay attention for a whole lesson of questions and answers and writing notes. But as for the questions they weren’t that complicated and Caolan was able to answer them without thinking too hard. The fifth-year enjoyed science at school and biology was one of his best subjects. It took very little effort to search his memory for an answer that hasn’t been mentioned before. He raised his hand like he did the first question, politeness and all. “The basis of life itself comes from the sun. Without the sun, plants wouldn’t be able to photosynthesise. We’d have no oxygen to breathe, no food sources to grow, little materials to build with..” I mean it was pretty obvious that humans needed plants for practically everything. These magical kids knew what photosynthesis was too, right? He continued just in case.. “Sunlight is used for energy- it’s converted into chemical energy to help the process along.” That will do. He lowered his hand and slumped back in his chair as he waited for everyone else to answer. |
So, the Sun. As soon as Kennedy mentioned that that was what they would be studying for the next while, Abra instinctively looked towards it. And then quickly looked away from it again because ouch. Uhhhh, what? OH. Right. Yes. The Sun. Practical uses. Right. Abra raised his hand. "This is both modern and old, I think, but people use the Sun for Divination. It's called Heliomancy and you look at the sun's rays and the shapes they make, and also shadows and omens and stuff like that." Listen, Abra BELIEEEEEVED in Divination, fully and totally, so it was only natural that his brain should stray to an answer like that. Actually, it was sort of the easy option actually, because there was a kind of divination for practically everything, so naturally there would be one for the Sun. It just helped that he already knew what it was. |
Mary knew her her facts. The sun was a star and they couldn't survive without it. She also remembered that muggles used it for energy with solar panels. Some had mentioned time as well. "The sun gives life itself, as plants can't grow without it, herbivores can't live without plants, and carnivores can't live without herbivores. In the muggle world they use it to generate electricity with solar panels. The sun also appears to rise and fall when at different times throughout the year, so ancient people made the first calendar based on the sun and were able to tell when to harvest crops based on the sun." |

Uses of the sun? Kaira raised her hand as she answered. 'Sunlight is a renewable form of energy and is used for generating electricity as it is non polluting and does not get exhausted. It can be used to treat water to remove contamination. We use it to grow crops and for basic survival cos it is the ultimate source of hear that powrrs the planet and without sun we would not have light. Or progress. Life, altogether,' she said. |
......... Oh. Max, who had raised his arm to have a go at the question, quickly lowered it again. Why? Because Tessa had totally just gone and stolen his sundial answer. He knew more about the moon than he did the sun. To be honest, he didn't really even see the sun all that much. He preferred to stay inside during the summer because sun burn was a big problem. And that's when another answer hit him. How people make use of this star we call the sun? "Professor," he started, raising his arm in the air once more. "Some people use it to try and catch a tan." |
Thie particular blonde was swaying slightly (class at his hour was never a good idea for a Faith Chosen, who would sleep until noon if people allowed her the opportunity) until finally, a question that Faith could answer! Her entire disposition brightened, and her back straightened as she raised her hand. "The sun keeps me toasty and warm and lets me wear sundresses. I can't do that anymore, though, because winter's coming and it's too cold for that," she said, happy to be talking about her sundresses and how much she preferred them over the boring uniform and the boring winter clothes that kept them warm. "Oh, and it also dries clothes and makes the flowers bloom and sometimes the sun is so hot people fry eggs with their cars." Though that didn't make much sense to Faith. But few things in the world made sense anyway so it wasn't really a problem. |
The sun. This lesson's time and venue made a lot more sense now. Drewett continued to quietly scribble down tiny notes on his parchment as the professor and his classmates continued to speak. And yes, he'd already given his assigned readings a head start since their first day of classes. The fourth year liked to keep himself busy. So many facts about the sun crossed Drewett's mind. Whether it be about botany or astrology or even divination, all of the things were basically written in their textbook. He liked to be well-rounded on things, even with topics they never really learned here in Hogwarts. Honestly, they could get something out of a few Muggle lessons here and there. Drewett was particularly biased when it came to science and mathematics. "Vitamin D, p-professor..." he shared after raising his hand. And aaaah, photosynthesis. Drewett quite liked that lesson |
Vita loved the sun. She loved its warmth. She loved the way it shed light on everything around her. She loved how it made her feel... Hey, that could be a use. "Spending time in the sun always cheers me up, professor." |
Playing Catchup, hai there. Although Holly loved the excuse to stay up late for Astronomy, she had to admit that an afternoon class was a nice change - especially when she had such an early class the next morning normally. Skipping and tumbling her way down the grassy slopes from the Castle to the lake, she got there with a large, happy smile on her face as she gave Professor Kennedy a wave. Text Cut: 1 What did she know about the stars? Not very much aside from what they had learnt last year and what she had happened to read in her encyclopedias growing up. However, her hand moved into the air easily enough - waiting her turn before answering. “I know that every star we see at night, is much bigger and brighter than the sun.” Nodding her head, she twirled her quill within her fingers, getting ready for all of the notes that she would be taking. After all, this would be important… Right? He wouldn’t ask them to do something that wasn’t relevant… Not like Professor Dopple. She was crazy… Actually, more like Krazy with a K like her dead kneazle… She really should check on that poor thing and make sure it was still moving…. Text Cut: 2 How was the sun used? Other than to get a tan and to make everything bright and shiny and happy? Hmmmm. Holly thought about it for a minute or two as she listened to some of the answers her classmates were giving before she slowly raised her hand. “Professor? I’m pretty sure the sun helps to make our weather patterns… Like how the moon affects the sea’s tides.” Or so she thought. Once more, she continued writing down everything that was said - scribbling Professor Kennedy’s own notes next to it if there was anything interesting. |
Was he asleep? No. Was he paying attention? Ehhh..... debatable. Eamon's eyes had been long distracted by the surface of the water. So much so that he'd missed the first question entirely. But that was fine. He didn't exactly have all the answers here. Or any? Astronomy wasn't exactly his cup of juice. It wasn't something he prided himself on being good at. But that didn't mean he didn't enjoy the lectures. Which was why he was here year after year (and also because it was mandatory). His gaze lifted finally, falling on the professor as the students began answering the second question, quickly picking up that it was about the sun. His hand went up carefully, not completely sure if this had been said or not but.... We'll give it a go. "It makes the moon shine." Wait no. That sounded stupid. "It well... the uh, the sun reflects off the moon so that we have a bit of light at night." Flustered? Eamon? Always. |
Was it surprising that Professor Kennedy liked looking at the stars? No. Did it still make him smile? You bet! Lucas sat there, head tilted slightly as he tried to take in everything the man was saying. They were going to be learning about the Sun? Huh. He glanced up at the sky, his thoughts now wandering away, and not because he was distracted by the lake. He really didn't expect them to be learning about the Sun - and it wasn't the first star he thought of when the professor mentioned stars - but he probably should've seen it coming. The time, the setting..... ....... oh? A question? Blinking, he tuned back into the lesson just in time to hear other students' answers about the Sun and its...... uses? There were a lot of smart answers here - and he meant a LOT - but all he could think of was the most obvious one. And it was, uh, probably dumb? But it was TRUE! So, up went the hand with a bit less confidence than it had done before. "We need the Sun to see." Pause. "I mean, we have Lumos and fire and electricity but before all of that, people used to rely only on the Sun to see the things around them and go about their day. And we still kind of do. Kind of. "I guess it's why we've..... grown to do things in the daylight?" That last bit he..... wasn't sure about but he was throwing it in there. |
The talk had begun on the stars which they weren’t really going to see at the moment. Except the sun, which as mentioned was also a star, that was still visible up in the afternoon sky. The now obvious reason, Septimus realized, for the class being on the early side this time around even before Professor Kennedy. And as it turned out, the sun would be the subject matter for a bit of time. Cool…or rather…hot. As for its practical uses, the current question of the lesson, the fourth year had to admit that it wasn’t hard to think on them. You just had to speak up and give them before your classmates said anything. There was heat and light. Powering your homes which was mostly a muggle thing. Telling time. Treating water. Getting plants to grow and prosper. Divination. Tanning, vitamin D and keeping oneself cheerful. All were good uses of the sun that his fellow students were spouting. “To dry things. Whether your clothes after you wash them, or surfaces affected by rains and floods.” That was what he could think of that hadn’t been said already. |
One of the things Hanna loved about learning at Hogwarts was how quickly, and perfectly things came together. Afternoon class, ask about stars, of course it's about the sun. Plus, it was good knowing what they would be studying for the next few months. It let her know to focus on the sun when she was doing her homework, and study. For exams. Plus the dreaded O.W.L.s next year. But what did she really know about the sun now? All of the quick ones, like vision, energy, warmth, they were spoken of. Giving it a random go, she raised her hand, "Er... does it help with gravity?" What did she mean by that? She had no idea. But like the moon and tides, perhaps the sun did something else to something else. |
You know, come to think of it, there was a lot of information about the sun out there. Torii thought about the things she knew. You could get a sun tan by laying out in the sun, but she doubted seriously the professor was looking for any information on sun tanning. Although, the Head Boy himself had just suggested that very thing, so she'd been beaten to the punch. Oh, well. As another thought came to mind, Torii raised her hand. "The sun helps us measure time. For example, when the earth makes one full revolution around the sun, we know that a year has passed," she said. There was also the measuring a day, too, but she decided to save that idea for somebody else to suggest. |
"Muggles study the sun and imitate it and create sun lamps to help people with depression," Camilus said, thinking of the contraption that he had seen at one of his muggle friends' house. |
Valencia's hand shot up immediately. She had a muggle science book that she had begged for after seeing an advertisement on the muggle box (which she entertained her mother's belief that that was what the television was called). "You can use the sun for a solar oven! I made a pizza once!" True story. "Orrr orrr you can hold up a magnifying glass to black paper and it'll make little burn marks so you can make a fun design." That one was on page 52 of her science book. The second example wasn't really useful, but it was fun. |
So there weren't going to be talking about the stars or the planets in the sky. The topic was the sun. Alrighty then. Rylee quietly took down some notes as those around her all gave their answers. There was a good bit of information to be written down too. Lifting her hand into the air she waited until it was her turn. "It's needed to help grow food." Plants, trees and flowers all needed sunlight to help them grow. Everyone needed to eat and there was tons of food that could be grown without much trouble. Speaking of sunlight she needed to get to the oasis and check on her own plants and make sure they were all getting enough. There might be enough time after the lesson to take a quick peek on that if she was quick enough. |
Charlie smiled when Professor Kennedy thanked her for her answer. She wanted to respond with a proud, boastful "You're welcome!" but decided it wasn't a great idea (she had to cover her mouth, though). She rose her hand a lot quicker for this question. "Sun dials." That's a good answer, right? "When the sun is out, it can tell people what time it is based on its position. The shadows of the sun are like the hands of the clock for a sundial, and they'll align with certain hour lines. You can make a sundial in the sand or dirt or... out of anything you want." She didn't suppose it would really help at night, though.... |
Quote:
She had been taking notes in her notebook while trying to formulate an answer that hadn't been voiced already (but honestly she was discovering that she didn't really know much about the sun). Maxton was smart, she knew he HAD to be, but sometimes his answers made her want to crawl into a hole. He was her OTHER HALF in the Slytherin leadership and consequently, HIS bad answers made HER look bad. At least that's what she thought. Natalie, unable to let his answer slide, (due to her need to be seen as practically perfect) raised her hand. "Professor, I think what Max meant to say was that humans need sun to survive. The sun provides Vitamin D, which is something that we all need to function at high capacity. So, when we go soak in the sun, we consequently are able to get tan. Or sunburned." Was she done? No. "Furthermore, the sun provides heat to the earth. Without it, we would freeze to death." To say the least. |
Quote:
His eyes narrowed and he waited until she was quite done before he raised his own hand again. “Professor,” he piped again, eyes still on Natalie and a mischievous grin slowly creeping to his lips, “I think what Natalie is trying to say is that human beings need heat to survive. We absorb the warmth from the sun through our skin and our bodies convert it into the energy we need to live. We’re not furry like most creatures are so our bodies rely on the extra heat from the sun to keep us going.” Two can play at that game little miss smarty pants know it all. |
SPOILER!!: Replies! SPOILER!!: The Prefects.. Kalen grinned as he heard the answers, but there was one in particular that he had hoped to hear and thankfully it was said fairly early on. Sundials! “All of those are excellent answers, and I wish we had more time to expand on them, but for today we will be studying, sundials. ” He said with a grin. “Or rather we are going to be making our own sundials, with materials that you all will be finding around here, now these sundials won’t be fancy, unless you all want to fancy them up yourselves, but for now.. I want you to go find a large flat rock, and a stick. A fairly long one.” He said with a smile. “So, up you all get and go search around the lake and the pathways for your materials.” He said with a nod. Welcome to the mini activity! What you need to do is go have your student try to find the materials that Kalen listed for them. They can feel free to gather other materials as well if they want to make their sundials their own. But the main materials are a flat rock and a stick! Feel free to go post the students on the grounds looking for and or finding the materials and then put links to your posts in here! Thanks guys! You have about 72 hours for this task. |
Catch up Patrick listened intently to what they were going to be studying today. He got to thinking about all the things you could do with the sun. He knew you could tell time with the sun, and use it to dry your clothes which he hated doing. But there was another one that most people hadn't said. At least he thought you could because his brothers had always told him that when they went camping. "Similar to what I said earlier, you can use the sun to navigate. Right?" he muttered the affirmation because he was fairly certain that you could. The sun's position always told you east and est directions, if you could remember that. "Because the sun goes east and west, which allows you to know which direction you're going in." He supposed he could have it totally off. He heard the sundials and the directions before he began to head off and find a flat rock and long stick.... flat rock and long stick.... flat rock and long stick. |
So Jó had been quiet throughout the questions because really he didn't care or have anything extra to add and watching the Lake to see if the Giant Squid would make an appearance was WAY more interesting. And then people were getting up and the second year had to concentrate hard to try and remember what the Professor had just instructed them to do. Find a flat rock and a long stick. Didn't seem too hard. With another glance around him, Józef got to his feet. COMMENCE THE SEARCH. |
Sundials. Huh. You know, for as long as Abra had known about sundials, he'd been confused by them. Like, how exactly they were supposed to help you tell the time, and whether it needed to be set up facing a specific direction or something. He supposed that now, in this lesson, he was going to have his questions answered. Presumably. ... Huh. Not exactly very specialist materials involved, were there? A stick and a rock. Abra had seen sundials before and he was fairly certain they usually involved more than that, BUT... Kennedy did say they wouldn't be making very fancy ones, so he was just going to roll with it. When they were given the go ahead to get on and start looking, Abra got to his feet along with everyone else. Before leaving the sanctity of the warming charms, he pulled his robes a little tighter around himself, and then went off on his search. |
How was the sun useful to them? Well, they'd all die without it. Which was a point that both the Slytherin prefect and that Natalie girl were - for some reason arguing about? Trying to one up each other? What was happening? She got so distracted by it that she totally missed her change to answer the question. They'd already moved on to sundials - which, ironically, was what she was going to talk about if she hadn't gotten distracted with her answer. They had to find their own materials? Well, it was an excuse to get up and move around for a bit which was nice. She stood up and cracked her knuckles. Time to get started! |
Malachi looks at Kairaand Calimus before getting up. "Um should we search together?" |
catch up. SPOILER!!: Professor Though Steph could do star charting faster than anyone she knew, talking about the sun wasn't much of her favorite. Mainly because she couldn't talk to anyone about how useful a star could be. "Back in ancient times, when people used a sundial to tell time, it was the sun's positioning that would cast the shadow onto the dial. To this day, people can use the sun to tell time without a sundial. If the sun is positioned right above you, its 12 noon. to your left, morning. To your right, afternoon," Though Steph would never recommend looking directly at the sun. Permanent damage that way. "Sunlight also helps plants grow on Earth, which is useful to humans. It also provides us with light during nights when the sunlight reflexes off the moon," Nod nod. "Also, sunlight helps bring up levels of serotonin in your body, which help improve your mood," Okay, Stephanie, that was enough. BUT YAS THEY'RE MAKING SUNDIALS! Stephanie wasted no time in heading off on her own and looking for the materials she'd need. Though her best bet to find a flat rock would be by the lake so she stayed around the section first. She doubted it would be hard to find a long stick near the trees. |
Valencia grinned. Sundials. Those were cool too. She's also made of these before. She put a flag on her playhouse in the yard and arranged the rocks on the perimeter in Roman Numerals. It was fun, until the animals ran through all the arranged rocks with Connor chasing after them. Anyways... She followed the class out, heading toward the lake once on the grounds. That was the best place to find a smooth rock. |
Forest Foraging? Quote:
"Yeah sounds like a plan. We could sneak close to the Forbidden Forest if we want a really good stick, but we have to be careful, I think I saw the Headmaster patrolling around there a little bit ago," he said makig sure to pack up his wand. Camilus knew they wouldn't be around the forest for too long, but he still wanted to make sure he was prepared for a giant if ever there came one. |
Oh, a SUNDIAL. That was terribly clever and useful, although Chloe had a feeling they were building something too unwieldy to carry with them from place to place. But it would be fascinating to learn how to create something like this, and perhaps she could build one again someday. Chloe popped to her feet and immediately began to study the ground in search of a flat stone and a long stick. The stick would be much easier to select than the stone, unless she was determined to pick a stick that had fallen naturally to avoid damaging any trees unintentionally. She shuffled her feet as she walked, turning over smaller twigs and pretty leaves to reveal the stones underneath. Annnnd perhaps she also collected a few pretty leaves because she liked how they looked, all red and gold and sepia toned. |
You'd think collecting a simple rock and a stick would be easy to do. You'd think, but that wasn't the case. Maybe Torii was trying too hard or something, because it was taking her forever to find a rock that she deemed flat enough. She'd never thought about it before, but rocks just weren't flat. Most of them were odd shapes that somewhat resembled round balls. Very few were flat, though. When Torii finally did find a flat rock, it was only the size of a coin, and she doubted working with something that small would do her any good. Frowning, she tossed it back onto the ground. The fourth year walked along the pathways, gently kicking a few leaves to the side as she walked. That was when she found it. It was a rock she thought was just perfect for a sundial! It was large and flat and just so perfect! Torii bent down and brushed some the dirt off the rock. Holding it in her hands, she began looking for a stick to go along with it. |
Patrick quickly joined the group that was all beginning to have a flat rock and stick in their hands. He was a little winded as he had jogged back to the group since he had walked all the way down to the pathways to find his rock and stick. It had paid off because it was a very flat rock. One that if it wasn’t so large would have been perfect for skipping across the lake if he hadn’t been afraid of the creatures in the Lake. He looked down at his stick and wondered if that would be too large or not. Deciding he would just wait for further instructions he stood patiently with his rock in one hand and the stick in the other. |
Huh? Sundials? Merlin, Eamon. Stop daydreaming in class. There was something about rocks. He knew that much. So he stood with the rest of the class and as they all headed off, he changed course and went toward a different area of the lake. More rocks? Better selection? Something like that. Anyway, what else did they need? It couldn't just be rocks, could it? Well, time to find out. |
Max barely heard Professor Kennedy's threat of a 'meeting in the Common Room.' No disrespect meant, Professor, but he was still delivering LOOKS across the semi-circle to Natalie McKinley. She was so annoying. But..... it was the kind of annoying he didn't mind too much. It was entertaining teasing her. He was so distracted he didn't even hear the next set of instructions and quickly turned his attention to the others in the group who were getting up and moving????? "Uhhhhhhhhhh." |
Caolan wasn’t big on being the first person to answer a question, nor was he one of these enthusiastic raise your hand and wave it in the air type of people every time a question was asked but this school seemed to have given him a bit of a confidence boost when it came to his education. He wasn’t dumb by any means, in fact arguably he was quite intelligent, he just hadn’t put as much effort into his school work than he perhaps should have. The professor praised his answer and his body visibly relaxed, a small smile gracing his face. The lesson moved on and the smile fell momentarily from his face. What was this? A treasure hunt for kids? He got that some of these students were only 11 years old but did they really have to waste time looking for a rock? He wrinkled his nose and headed off in the direction of the lake looking for the ‘perfect’ pebble. Or really just any old stone that looked like it could do and an ordinary stick. He was really into Astronomy but making sundials wasn’t on his agenda. |
With the rock in his pocket, bouncing against his leg with every step he took, and the stick in hand, Abra walked (still sort of speedily) back to the lesson area. He didn't slow to a stop until he felt himself enter the boundaries of the warming charms that had been set up. Ahhh. Better. Taking up his same seat again, Abra took the rock out of his pocket, lay it on his knees with the stick, and waited for the rest of the class to return from their respective searches. While he sat, he wondered to himself exactly how they would be using these two components to make a sundial, and exactly how well it was likely to work. |
*is Ash Ketchum* SPOILER!!: Professor Kennedy, Part I Aaron loved the Sun, so that was great. It was vital to all life, so who wouldn't be fan? He zoned out for a few minutes, thinking about flowers and bees, considering other important uses for solar energy. To put it plainly, the Sun was pure energy. And the longer he sat there, thinking as deeply as he was capable, the answers flew. His classmates were smart, and didn't leave much to be debated. With a notebook, qulll, and inkwell out, the Hufflepuff started a list. Professor Kennedy had mentioned this would take up half the year. So, it seemed a good idea to keep track of what had been said Huh. Too late for him to offer new insight, however. Welp, you snooze, you lose. As they say. SPOILER!!: Professor Kennedy, Part II A-ha! Sundials. That made sense. Can't deny that he's enthusiastic about this project. After grinning at Chloe again, because she looked very pretty today, the Fifth Year set off in search of his supplies. He didn't know that much about rocks, but he knew what he was looking for. Something pearlescent. With a pretty sheen to it. Aaron's wandering took him closer to the water's edge, where he tugged his robe closer around his body. Not because he was cold, but because he didn't want to get them wet. Especially as he leaned over to get a better look at the rocks available just beneath the surface. It was his reasoning that even if he found something that didn't appear that big, he could always magic it to spread out the "face". Like a clock face. It took several moments to find what he was looking for, but the Puffer knew it when he saw it. Pulling it up from the water, his fingers trembled from how frigid the water actually was. Sweetie-chum, that was freezing. BUT...he got the rock he wanted. So.. brightside. Hmmm. A stick... Aaron peered around, mind quickly trying to come up with solutions. The grounds were well-maintained, so it was difficult to find "sticks". However, there was a beech tree near the lake's edge... After securing the rock in his pocket, he moved closer to the tree, prepared to climb and pull one off. If he needed to.... Yeah, because he wasn't actually that tall yet. Wrapping his arms around the trunk, he began pulling himself up gradually. It was only made easier due to his fit Beater arms, but hindered by the school robe. Needless to say, it took more time than made sense to crawl his way up. But once he did, he sat on a branch. "Hey, does anyone need a stick while I'm up here?" |
It was always a bit of a relief to know that an almost guestimated answer wasn't incorrect, as was the case with the sun gravity. At least she knew what topic needed to be studied now, she hoped she would be a pro at it before too long. She didn't know much about sundials either, let alone make one, and had never used one, so this class would be a great learning experience. Hopping up, as Professor Kennedy had asked, and started her search for a large flat rock, and a long stick. Not thinking it would take too long to find, she put her head down and got her search on. Further back from the lake she spotted a stick that she figured would be good enough, being that it was almost the length of her arm. She walked back to her seat and put the stick on her seat, saving her from carrying it around with her. The rock took a bit longer to find, but find it she did. Back on the grass further away from the lake. It wasn't too heavy, so she carried it back to her desk without needing any magic to assist. |

After the questions Taddy was given the go ahead to search around for a nice large rock and big stick. That shouldn't be a problem for him. After all there were many rocks and sticks with all the trees surrounding this area. So he went near the lake where many rocks were to be laying. He squatted down to a pile and picked up one at a time to compare it's size. There wasn't all that many large ones, so he picked up biggest of the bunch before going off to search for a stick. Tad approached some trees when he heard a voice above among the others. He looked up to see an older Hufflepuff. Oh, he had found some up there. "Can I have a stick, please?" Tad called up to ask. It didn't seem likely he would be able to reach up there with his height. |
They were going to be making their own sundials. Now that was pretty interesting. However, first she needed to go take a walk and find herself a nice flat rock and a good sized stick in order to create the sundial. Rising to her feet she slung her bag over her shoulder and headed off when told to do so. It shouldn't take to long to find what she needed and maybe a few other things along the way to help make it look 'Rylee-ish'. Only the very best would do. So off she went in search of the items with a bright smile on her face. |

Cameron was being helpful, seeing as Max looked EXTREMELY lost. He wasn't really aware of why his friend had been distracted but the look on his face was unmistakably one of confusion. Not that this kind of activity was particularly challenging right now. A stone and a stick. That should be easy enough to find, yeah? They WERE outside after all. Now, off to find a stick. |
Kalen smiled as he watched the students hunt around for the materials, the sun disks were going to be rough, but they would get the idea pretty well. “Okay guys, a few more minutes! ” He said as he looked around, no one seemed to need him and Cameron seemed to be informing Max what they needed to do, so he leaned carefully against his table and looked around. OOC: Less than 24 hours to go guys!! Thanks for participating! |

Rock? Check! Stick? Check! "Nice one. Mission success," Max commented, giving Cam a shoulder bump right back as they made their way back from the lake and re-joined the others gathered by Professor Kennedy. He still thought this was a little odd for an Astronomy lesson and it wasn't quite as cool as looking at the stars but he was ready to get this sundial made. And hey, at least this meant there wouldn't be Astronomy TONIGHT and that meant more SLEEP. |
