Halfway between Professor Wayland's hut and the barn, you will notice a much smaller, light grey, and white barn. This is the Infant Magical Creatures Nursery. The nursery is where many infant creatures are taken care of when their parents can't take care of them. Many of these infant creatures are orphans, and Professor Wayland needs all the help he can get. If you look just inside the door you'll find shelves stocked with dragon hide gloves, goggles, brushes, clean rags, and anything else you could ever need to care for these adorable infant creatures.

Just outside the back door there are multiple pens, and stables that house the larger animals, like Abraxans, and a closed off pasture that you can let the infant creatures play or roam around in. Make sure when you put the baby creature away that all the doors are securely closed when you are finished caring for the baby creatures. We wouldn't want them to get out and get hurt!

Please come in and let the babies get to know you! Watch them grow and learn! If there is ever any issue, please contact Professor Wayland immediately.

Zoryn had no intention of nursing creatures, nor had she any intention to actually seek any out. In fact, she wasn't here for the creatures at all. She was here for one reason and one reason only: Derfael Ashburry-Hawthorne.

Typically the Gryffindor would just RUN up to her friend, trying to scare him in the process with LOADS of noise and other Zorynesque things. But not today. Today she was here on a mission and in order to see it to it's completion, she had to be very convincing. Which meant, she was on her BEST behavior.

Instead of yelling his name from the distance, she took her sweet time and sidled up next to him. "Hi, Derf," she grinned.

Why yes, Derf WAS already in the infant magical creatures nursery. To absolutely no one's surprise, surely. Though today he had not dragged his mattress out from the common room to sleep here. He figured he ought to wait until at least midterm before attempting that again.

Though presently he was sitting in front of Picketta's false tree enclosure with her hanging off his finger all the while listening to her as she attempted to instruct him in their latest bowtruckle lesson. It was a particularly difficult concept to grasp and get right...and the bowtruckle was becoming quite cross with him since they had been at it for hours now. Just like in English, Present Perfect Tense was incredibly difficult to learn.

She only became MORE cross when her lecture was interrupted by Zoryn, though Derf greeted his friend with a wide grin. She looked...better, you know? Since the last time they had spoken she had unwillingly cried about things while he hugged her and stuff. Which meant, if one gave it a positive spin, she had found a new purpose and aim to achieve. But the more realist perspective was that the Gryffindor was up to something. "Hey. Picketta is teaching me the Present Perfect Tense in Bowtruckle. You keen?"

She was definitely up to something. He knew her much too well.

"Sure!" The Gryffindor had no idea what the present perfect tense was to be completely honest. Sounded like enough fun though. Maybe. "But I don't even know the present tense." Which... Could probably be an issue here. Unless Picketta was ready to teach all of that too. They'd probably be here forever, which would be less than ideal seeing as Zoryn had places to be and things to do.

Particularly this one thing. Which she would be roping Derf into very soon.

Part of him would have been disappointed if she were not up to something. But as long as it was not throwing kneazles, or any creature for that matter, off the Astronomy Tower as she had tried to convince him to aid her with in the past...he would probably be okay with it. Not to mention that Zoryn always knew the right buttons to push when it came to the Hufflepuff - much like he always knew the right ones to get her to open up.

"Sure you do," he chuckled at her as she joined him, although Picketta looked less pleased about taking on an additional student and her sharp little bowtruckle fangs chattered menacingly. "We are using the present tense right now." Cue a bit of a cheek grin and ear wiggle that he had recently figured out how to do. But then, hearing the bowtruckle's displeasure with the situation, it hit him. "OH! You meant present tense in bowtruckle...right."

Picketta, in the meanwhile, had let go of Derf's finger and was currently scampering up his arm so she could nestle into his hair and WATCH this other girl more closely.

"Um...I reckon that means the lesson is over."

Then he would be absolutely relieved to know that there would be no creatures harmed in this plan. At least not at the moment, anyway. Things could change, Zoryn was flexible.

As she adjusted her position, she made sure to give him a light nudge in his ribs. Of course she meant in bowtruckle! That's what they were talking about, was it not!? Derf was probably THE goofiest person she had ever met in her ENTIRE life. And she knew LOADS of goofy people. Take Théo, for example. "Aw man, maybe next time?" She tried to sound ultra disappointed, when in reality she wasn't actually here to learn bowtruckle anyway. It made it easier now that she didn't have to do that at the same time as convincing him to climb aboard her master plan.

"Anyways," now they could get to the REAL reason why she was here. "Have you ever noticed how grumpy Professor Noble is?"

Derf genuinely thought that he MAY be on to something. He was perfectly aware of Zoryn's aversion to learning - at least from textbooks and in the classroom. It was sometimes like trying to brush a dragon's teeth while doing homework with her, but Derf was diligent and when they did he made sure she at least finished half. At a bare minimum one third of the assignment. But maybe, just MAYBE this out of the classroom and more in the REAL world sort of learning was up her broom? How many witches and wizards could speak bowtruckle, you know? And one thing he knew about Zoryn was that she liked being unique! "I'll talk to her. I am sure I can strike her some sort of deal," he grinned.

The change of topic took him a bit by surprise, but after a few blinks he was at least half on the same page as her. "Yeah, he does always seem to have his wand in a knot," he nodded. "But, you know, some famous person once said that 'happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know'...and you cannot deny that the man IS brilliant. Kinda like magic, you know? Everything comes with a cost."

He was a good man, that Derf, always determined. Never quite giving up on Zoryn Spinnet, even when he probably should have (especially in the case of homework, which almost always went incomplete). The Hufflepuff always managed to make progress with her, at least. Much more than any of the Professors could say. He was honestly the real driving force behind her education here. Bless his soul. "Don't think she likes me very much," was mostly all Zoryn had to say on the matter. If learning bowtruckle would make Derf happy, of course she would give it some sort of attempt. As for herself, however? She had no real desire to learn anyway.

This was mostly due to her focus on another task, which she needed to see to it's completion. And while the rapid change in topic may have been uncharacteristic of some, it was Zoryn's specialty. She had a hard time keeping at a pace when there was one particular thing burning on her mind. The burning topic almost certainly had priority over everything else. Even small talk.

"I mean, I guess," she started, having absolutely NO idea who this famous person was. Without a name, they weren't anyone important in Zoryn's book (especially because what they said was NOT helping her case). "But don't you think he deserves to be happy? Even just, like, a little bit?"

Oh, how he'd missed the barn and the nursery. It was the one place where he felt completely at ease, surrounded by all sorts of creatures. Among people he was mute and inept at holding a normal conversation, even less so around strangers, but over there was his kind of ideal world. It was something about the soft purrs and barks and chirps and various noises that relaxed him endlessly.

As he stepped inside the nursery, he eyed the two augureys that he and Shera had befriended last year, but decided to make another stop before greeting the baby birds.

Crups. He was weak for crups.

He walked over to the pen where the small crups were barking merrily among themselves, except one that stood up on two feet and watched him attentively, his forked tail wagging back and forth. Leaning down to check the little guy's tag, Daehyun saw that the crup's name was Spot, and up went Spot into his arms. "Hi there, Spot," he grinned at the small crup, who barked back a greeting.

Remembering the pasture he'd spotted outside, he walked with Spot happily cuddled against his chest and, once there, he put the little guy down on the grass, but instead of running around like Daehyun thought he would, he still stuck close to him, his forked tail moving wildly. "You're a cuddler, aren't you? Hmmm?"

... baby talk was something he never did around human babies.

Taking a seat cross-legged on the ground, he allowed Spot to jump on him, since the crup didn't look like he wanted to run around the pasture to drain his energy. Daehyun wouldn't be one to complain. Instead, he obliged and rubbed Spot's head lovingly.

It was a rare sight to see Quinn smiling, but if you happened to catch her in the barn, or the infant nursery like now...or for some inexplicable reason, around Reese, you might get a glimpse of it. She was smiling now as she walked the pens of the nursery, eyes quietly taking in every precious, adorable babies.

Which should she read to today? Maybe the crups?

Oh. Someone was with the crups today. The smile faded from her face and her expression returned to it's natural, resting inquisitiveness as she watched the boy playing with them. He was familiar, but she couldn't place him.

He was never going to let go of Spot. The small crup was cuddled on his lap as he sat cross-legged on the floor, enjoying a thorough belly rub, when suddenly the little guy's ears perked up, his sensitive nose most likely picking up a new scent. Whatever it was, it had Spot running behind him, Daehyun's existence completely forgotten. "Do I mean that little to you, after everything we've-"

... oh.

Back up on his feet, he turned to look at Spot's new interest, and his eyes fell on a vaguely familiar Ravenclaw girl, who watched him with an unreadable expression on her face. Which, although she was smaller, intimidated him. So the only thing he could do was stare back, blinking in confusion, his mouth half opened, as if wanting to say something. But his mind was blank. Oh Merlin, save him.

Quinn bit her bottom lip watching the little crup bound his way over to her, and scooped him up in her arms. She scratched him lightly on the top of his head like she did with her dogs at home. She missed them quite a lot, honestly.

After a few moments of devotedly petting and loving the crup in her arms, Quinn glanced back up at the Gryffindor. His half open gaping mouth, reminding her vaguely of a fish, looked like it wanted to say something. She watched and waited, raising one eyebrow questioningly. "Yes?"

Alright, so he remembered the girl briefly from the laundry room, but why was she looking at him like that? Whatever that meant, because he could not read people even if his life depended on it. Well, his sanity currently depended on it. "I-err-" He could feel his cheeks turning redder with each passing moment. She had been watching him, why was she the inquiring one?

"You were-uhm-watching me." Blink, blink.

... he deserved a pat on the back for being able to formulate that much. The girl probably thought him retarded by then.

Her eyes flick to the left for a moment, in amusement and thought. "Yes." There was no shame, or embarrassment in that statement. For a brief moment she looked away, but only to scratch the small crup her arms behind the ear. Then she looked back up at the boy, studying him anew for a bit.

"It bothers you." It wasn't a question, and she seemed to find the idea that he'd be so bothered by this amusing. "I watch everyone," she offered finally. Learning who people were by watching and studying them was quite a bit better than learning who they were with words, many of which were often only half-truths. It was better this way. "You looked like you wanted to say something before?"

... this was stressful. Very stressful, indeed.

He'd made that previous statement thinking that she would get the hint that he had expected her to say something, since she'd been the one to watch him first. And to point out that it bothered him... "More like, makes me squirm in my own skin, if we're being open," he mumbled under his breath, looking anywhere but at her. Why was it so impossibly difficult for him to start a normal conversation?

"I-uhh-" His brain was blank, so no, he didn't want to say anything. He sighed dejectedly, visibly deflated. "You'd make a great inquisitor, you know that?" Good at making people squirm.

Why did Spot leave him, he wanted- no, needed to hug a crup.

Just the barest hint of a smile reached the edge of her lips. This whole intimidating air about her was a new experience for the most part. Or perhaps she hadn't paid enough attention before this, but Quinn was growing rather fond of this ability.

"Would I? Can't say I've consider that career, but maybe." Honestly though, all she was ever doing was trying to discover who the person was. It wasn't really her fault if they found that intimidating. People might actually get along better if more took the time to learn who a person was.

Her arms were starting to tire a bit now. A baby though the crup may be, he was a little on the big side. Quinn set him down and watched as he bounded excitedly back to Daniel.

Oh, look, Quinn was capable of smiling. Though he had a feeling it was due to some sort of strange satisfaction of having him cornered and uncomfortable. She was a peculiar girl, wasn't she?

Pushing a pebble in between his feet, he hadn't noticed the Ravenclaw let go of Spot, who skipped right back at him, immediately bringing a grin to his lips. It was really everything he needed to be happy - just throw any sort of living being his way, and he was instantly excited.

He decided it would be more comfortable to resume his cross-legged position on the ground - praying he wouldn't stain his robes beyond the power of cleaning spells - and hugged the crup. "Ahh, I want to adopt you," he told the creature as he poked the little guy's nose, sighing wistfully. Looking up at Quinn, he said, "You think they'd let us keep more than one pet at Hogwarts?"

She watched them play for a bit, not really moving to join in, or moving much at all, to be honest. Daniel would be forgiven if for the briefest moment in time he thought she had become a statue. "I think," she said at last, seeming now to weigh his question, "I shall read to the baby nifflers."

Life seemed to flow back into her, then she turned and headed off, back into the nursery, and to the baby niflers. Honestly, the number of pets they were allowed to bring, as well as what was and wasn't approved without special permission was all perfectly stated on the letter they received from Hogwarts.

Sighing, Derf lifted Picketta towards his face so he could kiss her leaves before letting her settle back where she pleased. "She tends not to like girls in general," he sighed. "Bit territorial about that...like Tink was with Peter Pan." Though, he did pause for a moment and wondered if Zoryn knew who he was talking about. Though he reckoned she would ask IF she really wanted to know. No sense in really offering up unsolicited information to this Gryffindor, you know? Especially not when she clearly had an agenda and, well, the idly chit chat was just keeping her from it.

Best to just let Zoryn Spinnet out with it before she burst like an unmilked cow. Though that was not exactly an accurate description...but it was the comical visual that he had at the moment.

Did Zoryn want to get the Potions Master a giant basket of chocolates? He reckoned that no professor would be silly enough to accept food from students, especially if it was just left outside their office and stuff. Especially not the likes of Professor Noble.

Making her way through the barn, Eria only had one thing on her mind...well two...the baby augurey. When she'd realized that augurey had become her favorite creature, she really wasn't certain...but she loved them. It was rare she let anything have affection from her, but these creatures stole her little black heart away.

The babies were even more precious to her than the big ones, not just because babies were cute...but because these ones had problems. They were orphans and she could understand pain and problems much better than carefree cuteness....for instance pygmy puffs were just not her thing. She'd didn't get them.

First thing was first...babies were messy. Cleaning was always step one. "Hey Loralei, hey Phobus. How are my beautiful babies today?" She cooed dotingly to them and got closer to give them affection and help check their feathers.

This explanation made Zoryn laugh. “Picketta, you haven’t got to worry,” she leaned in because trying to explain something to a sentient twig was basically where Zoryn was at in her life right now. “Derf ’n I are always gonna be just fiends. I don’t like him like that,” she assured her. “No offense,” that was an afterthought. As for this Tink person… That comparison went completely over Zor’s head, but she was pretty sure she got the point.

Plus, there were important things left to be discussed still.

“He prefers creme brûlée,” she offered helpfully. The chocolate stuff sounded pretty legit though and maybe she could have some secret admirer chocolates delivered to him to help ‘cause at any rate, it couldn’t make anything worse.

Anyways, all of this set up was taking FAR too much time and Zoryn did have an agenda she needed to cover. “Love, Derf. I'm talking 'bout L-O-V-E. He needs LOVE!” What was that about bursting like an unmilked cow? “Think about it, we hep him get a girlfriend and he’ll finally leave us alone! I’m not even sure if the man’s got a heart, but it’s the best option we’ve got.”

A total WIN-WIN-WIN-WIN SITUATION.
