It was a good thing she already had out her parchment and quill! Professor Wayland wasted absolutely no time in giving them a whole lot of information. Rylee did her best in taking down everything he said as best she could hoping that she hadn't somehow missed anything to important. It wasn't always easy to keep up when a professor talked but she tried. Anytime there was a brief pause she flexed her fingers around her quill before continuing to write. There wasn't anything to write down as Professor Kennedy spoke and that was fine by her. Setting her parchment and quill back into her bag she sat up straight to listen to what they were supposed to do. Befriend an owl. Rylee was already wiggling in excitement. She didn't have her own owl but her sister had one that she liked a lot. Rylee got to her feet and went to get some of the owl treats first. Choosing an owl wasn't difficult at all, the small ginger girl already had her eyes set on one long ago. She made her way over to Professor Wayland with a bright smile. "Hi, there, Professor! I hope you don't mind if I borrow one of your friends," she giggled gesturing to the owl perched upon his head. That's the one she wanted. It was a beautiful reddish-brown with specks of black and a white face. The cutest Barn Owl for sure. Now came the hard part... getting it to come to her. "Hello there," she smiled holding out her arm palm up, an owl treat in the center of her hand. |
He was always pleased with himself whenever he said a right answer in class. The corners of his mouth curled up in to a small, satisfied smile as he was busy taking a few extra notes. When it was time for the practical portion of the lesson, Dorian shut his notebook closed and stood up. He brushed off the hay on his bum and searched for an owl to befriend. Owls were cool but toads were cooler. No one could beat Ammonite his purple colored toad. A brown owl landed on a hay bale a few feet away from him and the twelve year old moved toward the creature. Was he supposed to pick them up? Talk to them? How did you even befriend them? The use of owl snacks should be a start. The Ravenclaw turned away from the brown owl but kept it in his mind as he walked over to the bag of owl treats. Sticking his hand in, he pulled out some treats and walked back to the brown owl as some treats fell between his fingers on to the ground. He did not stop to pick them up though but kept walking until he sat on a hay bale next to the one the owl was on. "Here, now be my friend" he said as he opened up his hand to show the treats. |

Tristan gently moved his left arm to look at his watch, and then looked over at Kalen and chuckled. He could tell his bestie was freaking out on the inside. "Don't worry...they wont eat you, Kale Chip." He said with a wink before calling out, "You have about five minutes until we move on to the activity." With a flick of his wand some Owl treats flew through the air and landed in his hand. He gave one to each bird on his shoulders, and handed one over to Kalen. OOC: Y'all are doing great! Roughly 22ish hours before we move on to the main activity! |
Her heart rate slowly returned to a more acceptable level as both professors spoke. As long as her attention was on the instructions being give, she was able to ignore the eyes, the many many eyes, looking back at her. She almost laughed out loud when she remembered that not too long ago she was working with bats, but the owls were the ones that scared her. She nodded in understanding as Professor Wayland spoke of how creatures found their way in cloudy climates. It stood to reason that they would still be able to find their way around. She could still find her way home at night, just by looking for landmarks. Creatures should be able to do the same. So she was going to have to choose one to work with. Birds of prey and raptors kept running though her head. But, hey, they have owl treats to give the birds. Who needed protection against flesh tearing talons when you had a treat in your hand? Sure, she had her dragonhide gloves on, but those would do nothing to protect the rest of her body. Not knowing exactly how to start, she waited for a bit to see how some of the other students were going to approach the owls and befriend them. Finally working up some nerve, and after spotting a cute little Scops Owl, Emmalyn stood up from her hay bale and slowly walked towards the bag of treats. She grabbed several, better safe than sorry, and quietly approached the little owl. The light brown, almost creamy color if the owls belly reminded her of the blanket she had as a baby. It helped to calm her nerve thinking of a sweet thing like that. Once she was just a few feet away from the little owl, Emmalyn put a few treats in her hand and spoke softly to the bird. “Hey there sweetie. Would you like a treat?” She reached her hand closer, eyeing the talons and trying her best to judge the owls temper. She took another step forward “You can have two treats if you are kind to me. I won’t hurt you.” Her voice cracked a bit as she spoke, but she was able to keep her treat hand from trembling. She moved just a bit closer and almost jumped when the little owl hopped onto her gloved wrist. It reached down and snagged a treat, so softly that she didn’t even feel it happen. “Would you like to be my partner today?” The owl looked at her for just a moment before taking the second treat from her hand. It didn’t give any indication of flying away, so Emmalyn stood, frozen in place, until the next set of instructions was given. |
Daisy slowly got up from the hay bale she was sitting on and made her way to where the bag of owl treats was and grabbed a good handful of treats. She took a couple of moments in deciding which breed of owl to try and lure with the food before settling on a barn owl. She slowly and carefully made her way to the creature but stopped a few steps from it. Daisy didn't know how this creature was going to react to her and she didn't want her nervousness to show thus resulting in disaster. She held out her handful of treats as she gently spoke to the barn owl. "Here are some lovely owl treats for you. All you need to do is fly on over." The owl seemed to be looking at Daisy warily which made her swallow in fear. "Oh, great!" Daisy thought, sarcastically. Much to her relief, soon the owl had made its way to her wrist and was tucking into the owl treats. |

Choose wisely? What did that mean though? Sliding her notes into her bag so as to not ruin them, she bit her lip and cautiously looked over each of them. A small barn owl, that seemed like it would be easy enough to coerce. The Slytherin Captain gazed at the group of owls left unclaimed by students and decided to just pick one. Maybe, hopefully. Taking some of the owl treats into her hand, she shoved some into her pocket and held a few in her hand out for the owl to hopefully earn its trust. |

“Oh they won’t eat me Triscuit? That’s very comforting, though right now I am worried about the safety of my shoulder, those talons look a little dangerous.” He said as he shook his head and then took the treat that his friend handed to him. “How about we come out here to my arm yeah?” Kal said as he tried to reason with the Owl on his shoulder. |
Tristan chuckled at his best friend. He really never was much of a creatures person, which made their friendship even more interesting. "Seriously, don't worry. The most they would do to you is peck you on the head or fly away. Most likely the latter, honestly. Just stay calm and he will too. Trust them and they will trust you back." He said with a wink and a grin. Tristan watched as the students befriended the Owls of their choice. Owls, though fierce, could be very gentle creatures. Of course, people should still be careful with them; if frightened they will attack when necessary. But as long as you are kind and patient, they will be kind and patient back. He knew they needed to move on but watching the students with their chosen Owls was really nice. With a small grin, he called out. "Alright everyone, gather 'round." He paused waiting for all the students and their Owls to come back into the circle to give them their next instructions. With a smile, he clapped his hands together, making the owls on his shoulders flap their wings out, but simultaneously slapping him in the face. He chuckled. "Silly birds," he said shaking his head. "Alright. So we have a fun activity for you tonight. You will be given a compass, and a Star Map as well as your Owl for this activity." With a flick of his wand the Star Maps and compasses whizzed through the air and gently landed in each students lap. "Your task is to follow the star map; using it, your compass, and the Owl as a guide to a specific end point. Each Owl knows the path to take and if you stray from it, they have been told to give you a small peck." He paused with a grin, "Now you have 6 specific locations that you will be going to, the final location will be the end point and where Professor Kennedy and I will be waiting for you. When you reach each location, a golden star on your map will appear." He clasped his hands together, and waited for a moment or two. Suspense! "You may begin!" He called out, tossing his arms in the air causing the owls on his shoulders to fly away startled. OOC: Okay this is pretty straight forward. Students have a star map, compass and Owl. Starting at the barns where the lesson is taking place they will navigate using their star map and Owl as a guide. The map and Owl will lead them to The Courtyard of the castle where the Professors will be waiting for them. Be warned, the Owls know what path you are supposed to make and if you aren’t going the right way...they will peck you! (Which you can RP out however you want to!) Below is a list of threads in the grounds that you must post at in that specific order to make it to the end point and receive full points. You must start in the lesson thread before going to the first location. In your post at the courtyard, all you need to post is seeing the professors in the distance before posting back at the lesson thread that you made it to the end point with links to all your posts. Please be sure to label your posts in the title "Astronomy & CoMC Lesson Activity." 1. The Forbidden Forest 2. The Pathways 3. The Igloo 4. The Whomping Willow 5. The Wooden Bridge 6. The Courtyard - End! Back to the lesson thread! If you have any questions or need any clarifications, please PM/VM myself or MunchyBubbles. You have until 7PM/10 pm PST/EST to complete this task. Which is roughly 96 hours. Good luck! Have fun! Take your time! Please don't post your last post until Thea and I have moved the Professor's to the end point in the lesson thread. Thank you! |
She took a deep breath, trying not to complain aloud to Professor Wayland. It was her own fear that was causing her less than happy attitude. If she could just get a handle on her fear of owls, then she would see how fun the lesson could be. With her arm outstretched and held as motionless as humanly possible, she made her way to her hay bale to collect her things and grab a map. “Please don’t peck me too much. I’ll try my best, but please don’t peck me.” she whispered as sweetly as she could to her little owl. It was just then that she realized how thankful she was to have chosen such a small owl. A bigger owl meant a bigger beak to peck with. After pulling out her compass and getting her map ready she whispered again to her little owl. “Just six locations. That’s all. We can do it.” Then she set out towards the castle “ouch!” Nope, she turned and started heading away from the castle. |
The barn owl ruffled its feathers and moved to Daisy's shoulder as she looked at the map. She was feeling very relieved that the barn owl was a tad small and that Daisy was wearing her jacket, otherwise the owl's talons might cause quite a fair bit of damage. She consulted the map and compass before setting off towards the first location. |
*catching up* Cam wished they could have used their own owls. With that in mind, Cameron picked out the one who looked most like his own. He still took the time to finish writing down his notes, however, and putting the pieces of parchment back into his bag. So they wouldn't be coming back HERE right? Which meant...he should probably bring all his things on this little quest. Good to know. Now, onto befriending an owl. After grabbing a few of the provided owl treats (he wasn't going to use his own if the professors provided some after all), Cameron walked over to the owl he'd set his eye on earlier. "Hey there." He had found that talking to animals you wanted to befriend (or at least those you needed something from) was usually working in his favor. Maybe it was the calmness in his voice? Showing that he wasn't a threat? Honestly, he wasn't entirely sure but it seemed to be working. Or at least he hadn't been pecked. Not even when he gave the owl a few owl treats. Now he just needed that star map and compass and he was good to go. |
She had gotten an owl when told and of course, she got the prettiest of the bunch. There wouldn't be any ugly birds on her shoulder. This one seemed to be just like her, pretty with a bit of sass. She just knew they would be fast friends. Giving the owl some treats she moved to the be with the rest of the class as the professors said what they would be doing next. UGH UGH UGH The compass stuff wasn't bad enough the first time they did it in that lesson the Professor had accused her of cheating because she worked with Ace, now they were just going to let them go in the dark with an owl and a map? She didn't read maps, that's what adults were for and what magic was for, why would she need to use a map in real life. She had no intentions to go exploring the great outdoors, nope she would use portkeys like normal people. Reluctantly she took the map and the compass and turned and looked to the start. |
As one of the barn owls flew to her hand where her treats were held out, another flew and started pecking at her pocket. Oops? Perhaps sticking treats in her pocket wasn't such a good idea until she got comfortable with just the one. See, if only she could have used her OWN owl, this probably would have had a better outcome. Because her own owl, well, she was comfortable with it. Except that her own owl, as she listened to Wayland explain the activity, didn't know the path, but it was a wise creature and would figure it out. Right, but first, she needed to gently get the one off of pecking her pocket, which she surprisingly did without hurting the bird. Just a little, 'shoo', and nudge and a friendly pet on the chosen barn owl, and she had just one owl. Forbidden Forest? With just a star map, compass and owl? Well, she supposed they weren't going that far in, but somehow the sixteen year old couldn't help but wish she could complete this little obstacle course (if it could be considered that) with like her boyfriend or something? Maybe they could sneak off the beaten path for a quick snog too. Except probably not, given the two professors leading them, but hey, wishful thinking? She did smile at the friendly nicknames she overheard them calling each other? Kale chip and Triscuit? Kind of reminded her of her fellow snake leaders, Coleslaw and Mayfield. Hogwarts students were all about the food, weren't they? Well, except Wayland and Kennedy weren't students, but she had the impression that they had those nicknames from when they were students.... Anyway, with a compass and star map in hand, her barn owl resting / digging into her shoulder, the sixth year was off towards the forbidden forest, guessing she just needed to reach the forest's edge because it was getting kind of late.... |
ALL the catch up Kye was quite content with her jacket and the breeze. She loved this kind of weather, and she was convinced that the sharp chill was the only thing keeping her awake tonight. She had no qualms with Astronomy itself, but boy was she exhausted in this class. Tonight’s class would be even more tiresome as it was a joint class and they would somehow be mixing stars and… creatures…? Kye arrived just in time for class to start, and decided to wait on a drink for now so as not to exacerbate the fact that she wasn’t quite early. “Hello, Professor Kennedy” she nodded and smiled, “Professor Wayland,” another nod and smile. Kye found an available hay bale and got herself situated. Hi, yes, hello classmates. Hmm what did she remember? “Well, besides the aforementioned… we talked about Bellatrix, Regulus, and Sirius which were also infamous members of the Black family, oh and Betelgeuse of course.” And oops… yea she had forgotten the first question. Hmm… migration stuff? That was not where Kye had seen the class leading to be honest. She was reminded of their previous talk about pirates when it came to star navigation, although she couldn’t be surprised that other animals used it too. Aww… no phoenix or anything? They had plenty of owls over the grounds! Kye thought for a moment that maybe since COMC was here, they would get to deal with a less common bird but oh well. Owls were still cute at least. Kye smiled when the owl landed on Professor Wayland’s head because come on… that was adorable. Raising her hand, Kye answered, “Well they are the most common letter carriers in our world, they can turn their heads more than 180 degrees, they are nocturnal which is where the celestial navigation comes into play here, of course… They have incredible sense of sight, and I think… hearing?” she hadn’t ended on the most reassuring note, but at least she had tried, okay?! Partner with an owl? Kye imagined this would be easier for those who actually had more experience with the creatures. She had thought about getting one, but she was content with using the school owls, who knew exactly what you wanted when you entered their domain. She never had to take care of one or try to befriend one… Were they anything like a cat by chance…? Would they bite? She was iffy on grabbing the snacks, but figured/hoped the owls were smart enough not to bite her fingers instead of the treats. Kye observed the owls for a moment, since she had previously just been looking at the ones landing on the professor. She eyed a calm looking scops owl? It was just this little thing, and looked like it was a baby compared to the others in size. It had mellow yellow looking eyes, and a greyscale of color. He was turning his head a bit and cleaning his feathers, which caused Kye to smile at him and decide that he would do. With a small gulp, Kye grabbed some treats and approached cautiously. I mean you no harm little guy… Were they also cautious? Would it turn aggressive in defense? With a couple treats in hand, Kye offered him the treat open palmed. “Hi there… Hi little guy… Are you hungry? Are you okay?” she started speaking lowly at him, trying to show that she was friend not foe. The owl just stared at her for a while, until what seemed like ages had gone by and he started to eye the treats. He let out a little ‘hoot’ and starting hopping a bit closer. After a little more egging, the owl had flit his little wings and landed on Kye’s forearm, eyes only for the food. That was all too familiar, huh? Edie was the same way sometimes. After taking what had been in her hand, the owl eyed Kye curiously… Kye could only assume he was trying to see if she had any more. Wow, he was like a cat! Kye seemed to be bonding pretty well with her new friend, at least she thought so. Then Professor Wayland clapped his hands and the owl let out a little hoot of defiance. Haha… a bit fearsome for Kye and those talons, but he was actually pretty adorable. She enjoyed his personality, and was glad she hadn’t tried for one of those big fellows. What was that? Follow a star map with the owl? Hmm okay… Hopefully he was feeling up for it? Kye decided to grab a handful of treats just in case the bird needed a little coercing throughout the next segment of the class. Kye listened to their instructions, and hoped the owls were on the same page as to what a ‘small peck’ was. Kye tried to hide her worry as the locations were listed. All of those tonight? Couldn’t she go get her broom first? She could just follow the owl to the next location, and DONE. She took the tools offered and hesitantly made her way, definitely not keeping the other students in her sights as they started toward their first destination. |
After realizing she had left her jacket behind, Emmalyn made a quick dash back to the hay bales to retrieve it. Most of the students had already left, so she knew she needed to hurry and get back out to find those locations. |
After all the students had gotten on their way, Tristan turned and whistled a little tune, and a few seconds later there was a burst of flame and Ash appeared. The beautiful Phoenix landed on Tristan's shoulder. "Well, our ride has arrived." He turned to Kalen with a wink. "Just have a firm but gentle grip on a tail feather, and he will take us to the court yard." Another whistle and Ash hovered above them, flapping his wings ready to take them wherever they wished to go. Tristan held fast to a warm tail feather, and turned to Kalen. "Are you ready for the ride of your life?" He said with a huge grin. |
Quote:
“Of course our ride is here.” He said with a shake of his head as he listened to Tris and reached up to grab a tail feather. This would be new.. and weird and he hoped he wasn’t going to lose his tea during this ride. He shook his head as Tris spoke and mumbled something only the two of them could hear in response.. |
Quote:
At the mumbled comment however he roared in laughter. Once, he calmed down enough he gave another distinct whistle and in seconds they were engulfed in flames. One second they were looking at empty hay bales, and the next they were in the Courtyard. He quickly released Ash's warm tail feathers and turned to Kale. "Now, that was fun." He chuckled. |
Quote:
“Well if anything we can say we arrived in style. ” He said as he brushed off his shoulders and hair, just to make sure they weren’t on fire, because that would be bad.. “It was indeed fun..” He said with a wink as he thought up another comment, but this time he kept it to himself as he looked around the courtyard and jammed his hands in the pockets of his wool coat.. “And now we wait? ” You all have 72 hours left! |
Daisy had finally completed her activity and was pleased with how it went. She wasn't too sure of a couple of locations though but she and her owl had gotten through it all unscathed. "Thank you for your help today, sweetie," Daisy said to the barn owl as it crawled onto her arm, letting the teenager gently stroke its back. Text Cut: Star Map Locations |
She was glad to have finished before the time was up. She gave Oly a handful of treats and sent the owl off her shoulder to snack. After pulling out her pencil, she looked over her map one last time, hoping she didn’t miss anything. It had been a fantastic class. A great way to practice using a map, compass, and the sky to navigate. Best of all was the help she received from her new little friend. Text Cut: Map and locations Just as she placed her map down before her, she looked over and noticed Daisy just to the left. "Hi Daisy! How'd you do? I hope you didn't get pecked too many times by your owl." Her smile was bright and she held up her gloves "I sure am thankful for these gloves." |
Daisy smiled at Emmalyn. "I think I did pretty well. Thankfully for me, my owl only nipped me a tiny bit whenever I strayed onto the wrong path. I have to admit that a couple of locations did scare me slightly. How did you do?" |
Quote:
"Now, we wait." He said with a wink and a nod. Starting a conversation to keep them occupied, Tristan took a seat on the edge of the fountain, knowing they would most likely be there for a while. "Oh, by the way, Aunt Beth and Uncle John told me to tell you hello and they hope to see you this summer." Tristan said with a nod. He knew Kalen had his own family to visit, but his Aunt and Uncle always considered Kalen part of their family as well. Soon enough, footsteps could be heard not too far away. Tristan hopped up and turned around to see who could possibly coming already. First came Daisy, and then a few seconds later came Emmalyn. "Well, aren't you two quick! Well done! You two can just rest here and have a chat while we wait for the others to return." He said with a small smile. OOC: Y'all are doing great! You have 48 hours to finish! |
Kye had fiiinally arrived and was honestly... a little confused as to the scene. There were only two others here? Was she actually early?! "Sheesh you two are crazy quick!" she said with a smile to Daisy and Emmalyn. She took out the rest of the treats from her pocket, totaling three, and offered them to Navi. He took one and started chowing down right there on her shoulder. "What, you're not tired of me yet?" she joked. And as if by cue, Navi finished up his treat and flew over to a nearby bench with the second treat, ruffling his feathers. Well fine then. Brat. As he finished eating the second treat, he seemed content with a couple of soft hoots, and an almost unwavering look over at Kye. Kye was pouting now that her so called friend had ditched her. Now her shoulder was cold. SPOILER!!: Location Location Location |

He looked over at his friend and smiled a bit at the mention of Tris’s Aunt and Uncle, “I would love to see them, you know that. I might have a few weeks when I’m out of the country, but I will make a point to stop and see them.” He still wasn’t sure if he was going to Egypt or not, maybe that had been a nice pipe dream, and not an actual thing. Ahh well. “By the way, Chase and Kya want you to come by for dinner sometime as well, though be prepared, Ky might want to set you up with her sister. Though why she wants to set you up and not me.. ” Kal shrugged as he noticed the kids get back and he nodded at them. OOC: You guys have about 22ish hours left |
