The normal greenish glow of the dungeons seem to glow a bit brighter today as if it was reflecting some of the sunlight from outside somehow. The classroom is a comfortable even for the September weather. The workstations are sat up in their normal way four people per table, not that it was relevant to the lesson today. Labs coats, were hanging right as you walk in, if you wanted one they were there. On workstation was a parchment, quill, and two vitals one has a clear liquid and the other has a white sandy dust substance in the other. They will find out what was in them soon enough.
Professor Canterbury had the doors wide open. Standing near the door slipped on her own lab coat and walked around the classroom. Checking to see it was all ready to go and that each spot had what was needed for the lesson. She moved back behind her desk and to took a seat as she waited for the students to come in. Come right on in and take a seat the lesson be being getting started
OOC: Please make sure you're familiar with Professor Canterbury’s rules as well as the SS site rules before posting. Please remember this IC this is not the first lesson of the term. Class will continue in a little over 24 hours time (May 6 around 9am EST) Thanks for coming! Class has officially started so please keep the chatting to a minimum. If you haven't posted your charrie in here and want to, please feel free to jump right in and pretend as though they've been here the entire time.

SPOILER!!: Tincture questions
She was expecting this question, and these questions. Firstly ”No Miss Toussaint the solvent is water, but it other tinctures alcohol is used as the solvent.” She nodded to the slytherin who seem to be on the up of potions things.
Now she looked at the two girls who voice them concern for the demiguise. ”I can ensure you that all the ingredients that I have ever gathered were collectioned in the safest manner that is possble.” What did the students think? That she was some monster that would harm creatures for ingredients. She was not.
SPOILER!!: Derf and the concerned, and Cambridge in the line of fire.
After the taste testing debacle was taking care of the rest of the lesson was going great, She had just finished demonstrating the experiment and was letting the students do their own. Her blue eyes watched around the room at the students checking to see if they were staying on task and not goofy around. Her eyes fell on Mister Ashburry-Hawthorne, oh no she seen her face go pale and that was about all. Please don’t…. Merlin. It all happened so fast. ”Mister Ashburry-Hawthorne, are you okay?” What was wrong with him? It was only pearl dust. Rushing over his side, nearly slipping in the sick on the floor. She eyed the sick on the floor, with her wand she cleaned the floor. There was still more on the floor thought and everywhere.
”Yes, Mister Kenning, thank you and since MIss Sparkles is here, as well have her to help you, show her a cleaning spell.” Her being a first it was unlikely that she had knowledge of the charm. She looked over at the Ravenclaw girl, ”Miss Cambridge, are you okay?” She felt just a bad for her as she did Mister Ashburry-Hawthorne. Though the Ravenclaw was perfectly calm about the whole thing.
She looked to the others who had voice their concern for the Hufflepuff. ”He’ll be fine.” Just a weak stomach and a soft heart for creatures. If what miss Cambridge said was the true reason why the Hufflepuff had gotten sick. It would have fun been the first time that had happened to one of her students.
She turned back to the Hufflepuff second year. ”You can be excused to Healer Reed if you are not feeling well.” Hopefully he would, he had disrupted her lesson twice already. Or Maybe he truly wasn’t feeling good. Either way he was going to see the healer.
”If you haven’t already sprinkle the pearl dust on your parchment or do it once you have finished. What is a chemical reaction? What are some chemical reactions, and what happens? You may also pull from muggle chemistry.” She know that chemistry might be out of the league for some students but everyone at least knew the baking soda and

Okay so people were cleaning up but there was something about vomit that just lingered on the air unpleasantly. Char could contribute to that though. She got her wand and moved it in a short diagonal movement from right to left, followed by a longer upward stroke, and finally another short diagonal from right to left to go with the incantation, "Odoris Subsisto vomit!" Instant relief too, though Char wasn't sure if the spell would help with the sink in the entire room or just in her vicinity, either way it was far less unpleasant now.
So she could try answer the question now?
Ummm.... chemical reactions. She racked her brain, generally clueless about muggle science
She put her hand up though, still determined to do her best. "Like....cooking?" did cooking count? Food changed when you mixed it with other food or baked or boiled or whatever.... was that chemical or just delicious?

And why did he have to suddenly become Charms professor for a first year?
Hogwarts could be so puzzling.
"A chemical reaction is," He said, referring to her question, letting his tie drop and fishing out his wand, "frying an egg."
He blinked down at the boy, but gave his shoulder a slight squeeze before letting go. "I hope your regular dreams aren't quite like this, Derfael." Levi spoke from experience. And if they were, he could always recommend the boy sleeping potions with varying degrees of effectiveness. He turned to look at the Gryffindor first year, his apparently temporary student, and explained, "We could use Scourgify but that'd mean soap bubbles," which would cause a bigger mess, exactly the opposite of what was needed, "So we'll use Evanesco instead. Point your wand at your target and say it and mean it--" What was her name? "--Miss Sparkes." According to Professor Canterbury, anyway.
The Ravenclaw girl next to Derf whose surname appeared to be Cambridge had cleaned what was on the floor. So Levi merely pointed his wand at the table and cleaned what was left, leaving only a very small spot for Emmeline Sparkes to take care of.
The sixth year walked back to his desk at the same time Declan hit him with a birdy, drawing his attention. He captured the birdy, and as he slid back on his seat next to Kettleburn, shot his brother a look over his shoulder that only had a slight touch of irritation to it. It was enough. It'd been so long, sometimes he forgot what they'd been fighting about on the first place; but then he went to bed at night and remembered.
A frown creased his forehead, and the corner of his lips turned down, momentarily. He sprinkled the dust on Kettleburn's note and Declan's, and set down to write his replies.
To Kettleburn he wrote and sent, Scandalous and shocking. Henry will be pleased, I'm sure.
To Declan he wrote but did not send back, Yes and yes.
Levi stuffed it in his pocket, shot Declan another look over his shoulder. Later.
Meanwhile the message Levi had written revealed itself when she sprinkled the pearl dust on and she shot Levi a smile. "Not so bad so far!" The lesson that was, and honestly she was hoping that would just get to do more note passing and no brewing. And yes even with the vomiting and, oh, was Abey crying? Why???? Even with that, it could have been way more terrible (read: boring) so Char was in a good mood.
And ohhh a new note from Levi! She sprinkled on more be pearl dust and watched it reveal itself.
Yes, she could grow used to passing notes in class.

Right, people had intelligent answers. Had he mentioned that this was the class that made him feel like a dumb person yet? Anyway he had to say something at the risk of looking even dumber. "A chemical reaction occurs when two substances come together and change quickly on a molecular level." He'd read that somewhere before and it was one of those things that you read once and just stick in the back of your head.
"Like Coke and Mentos it's a muggle example from the early 2000's." Maybe it was a boring or silly.. or even weird example but it also made for very interesting internet videos. Did Katy know about Coke and Mentos yet?
Emmeline was extremely relieved that no demiguises had been hurt for the weird ingredient. It was hard to imagine how a liquid could be "extracted" from a creature without hurting it, but the professor said the creature hadn't been hurt and this was all really upsetting anyway, so she decided to stop thinking about it.
She smiled sympathetically at Derf and the Ravenclaw girl -- Cambridge, apparently as they both described why Derf had gotten so upset. She was still worried about Derf because he was still kinda pale, and Abey was crying, but they both seemed a little better now that they were hugging. She gave the two older kids who had come over a grateful look, because surely older kids were better equipped to handle any situation ever.
Then the professor came over and cleaned up some of the mess, before telling the older Gryffindor boy to teach her the spell to clean the rest. What? Not that she wasn't happy to help, but she didn't always learn new spells on the first try and this stuff was gross...
Thankfully, the older boy taught her two new spells and cleaned up most of the mess that was left himself. "Thanks!"
Right, there was still some stuff left. Pulling out her wand, Emmeline pointed it in the direction of the grossness, though she really didn't want to look at it too closely, and muttered, "Evanesco!" Buut nothing happened. She guessed she would have to look at it properly -- just don't think of what it is, okay? -- to cast the spell. Taking a not-very-deep breath because the smell wasn't fun either, she forced herself to look determinedly at the stuff she wanted to clean up and said more forcefully, "Evanesco!" To her surprise and great relief, the spell worked correctly this time. Except now she was kind of queazy too; she was still worried about Derf and Abey, but they did look a little better now and there was still the older girl standing with them, so Emmeline returned to her seat.
It was really time to focus more on potions now, but she couldn't remember the teacher's new question and honestly, she wanted to think about positive things for a few minutes to calm down. She reached into her bag and pulled out her potions notebook and some normal ink. Dipping her quill into the nice, normal ink, she set about doodling a sketch of one of the nifflers from the barn in her notebook. She was thinking maybe she could get notes from Stasya or an older kid later cause she couldn't remember half of the stuff she was actually supposed to have paid attention to anyway, not after that incident.

Write something on the parchment? She could do that. Isa doodled at random on the page in front of her, drawing what she hoped looked like flowers. Interesting. The ink was invisible. What was the other vial for? When prompted to do so, Isa sprinkled some of the pearl dust over her parchment and watched intently as it burned and revealed her flower doodles. This was so cool!
Awwwww, poor Derf. Isa wanted to go comfort her friend and see if she could help him, but she also didn't want him to be embarrassed by too much attention. Publicly vomiting certainly attracted unwanted attention of all sorts. "Derf? You need anything?" There probably wasn't much that she could do now that the other people who had gathered around couldn't.
Chemical reactions. Chemistry. Isa tried to remember the things that Penelope had explained to her about muggle chemistry. Penelope had been studying chemistry from a muggle textbook. "All matter is made up of atoms and molecules of different elements. In a chemical reaction, two or more substances combine to create a new substance, or one substance can break down into other substances. Some things are acids and some things are bases, and acids can neutralize bases. I think the stuff that pearls are made from is a base, so maybe the demiguise tincture is an acid that neutralizes the pearl and that's why the pearl dust makes the ink show up." Um, that was probably the basics. She did really try to pay attention to the things that Penelope told her. Isa loved her big sister and aspired to be like Penny. Isa vaguely remembered a few other things that Penelope had tried to teach her about chemistry, like conservation of mass and concentration of solutions and acids and bases, but Isa didn't really know everything in depth. Maybe one day she would do her own chemistry studies like Penny had done. Could she learn more about chemistry?

Lesson for today: Don't do random testing, especially in potions lesson.
The vomiting incident was kind of the distracting because of the smell. Thankfully Char had cast a spell to eliminate the unpleasant vomit odor. Alright, moving on to the lesson. The Gryffindor knew some things about chemistry since she used to go to muggle elementary school. "It's like when you mixed something chemical with the other chemical thingy and then it will change the color or the matter or sometimes it produces gas." Ava answered the question as she raised her hand. Ah, she missed muggle science class. But potions was more interesting.

Woah! A chemical reaction? What wanted the professor do during this lesson? Thinking hard about her muggle school she remembered vaguely what the teacher had told the class about this subject, but… It wasn’t much because, well… Most of the time she had been ignoring the teacher or she had been just doing something entirely else like… Something fun, she had played with her Nintendo DS a lot secretly… But… Wasn’t it something about changing once substance into something else? Thinking back some more she remembered something she actually had liked, the teacher had made a small explosion while mixing some substances and… Well… That had been cool!

He was feeling pretty terrible right now, queasy stomach and horrible imagery aside, and was already trying to figure out how best to make it up to Jessa for throwing up on her. This was loads different from when the crup had peed on Theo - then again, crup pee was totally lucky whereas Derf throw up was not - so the second year was completely at a loss.
His blue focusing on the demiguise essence stuff - what was it again? Demiguise something...tears. He was just going to stick with his initial thought of tears since he was crying on the inside. Although his second thought of pee was better fitting comparatively, he supposed.
In any case, he was soon dipping the tip of his quill in it and scribbling frantically over his piece of parchment with such focus that he failed to hear Isa asking him something. Few minutes later, he passed the parchment over to Jessa for her to sprinkle the pearl powder.
Watching her with big ol' FORGIVE ME PLEASE blues, he waited for her to sprinkle the powder over it and reveal the quick drawing.

Abey didn't really know why he was suddenly so panicked, actually. Sometimes people just didn't feel well and they got sick, and there was nothing to worry about. He knew that, he did. He really did.
But even so, that didn't stop alarm bells going off, nor did it stop the very sudden and intrusive thought that something was wrong with Derf, Derf was really not well, and what if he died, he was going to die, Derf was going to die.
Needless to say, such thoughts actually didn't help the whole crying thing at all. And the more he cried, the more he seemed to panic, until his thoughts weren't even just on Derf, and other thoughts and memories started to creep in too. Like what if the monster came back, and what if it was coming for him, and what if it was coming for Derf, and what if it knew exactly where they were, and there was nothing he could do about it.
Luckily, luckily, Abey didn't really get a chance to latch onto those thoughts and get carried off into full-blown panic, because of how there were lots of people about him, some of them bringing his attention onto them. Very, very helpful, actually.
It was that one Slytherin girl (Daisy) who distracted Abey first. He didn't know her name - or... maybe he did know it, but he wasn't totally certain about it apart from the fact that her surname was Carden - but that absolutely actually didn't stop him from reaching out to hold onto her sleeve, reassuring himself she was physically there and he was physically here standing right in front of her. Looking straight ahead at the girl's face, he nodded, and tried hard to stop the tears but it was so hard because everything suddenly felt like a lot and too much. The problem was, he couldn't be sure everything would be fine. "I d-don't want him to d-die," he managed to blubber out, though very, very quietly.
There was talk of Derf going to the healer, and Abey felt another surge of panic, and he whipped his head around to try and see what was going on, only to find Derf coming right his way.
Instinctively, because he was an incredibly touchy-feely person, Abey let go of the Slytherin girl and flung his arms around Derf right as his villain reached him. And... maybe bawled a little bit more because there was something about hugs that squeezed extra emotions out of him, for some reason. But okay. Okay. Derf was okay and probably(?) not going to die today. Abey expressed his relief by squishing Derf tighter but not SO tight that he'd somehow make the other boy feel worse. Words weren't really something that were very easy at the moment, so Abey just nodded again and tried to put all of his unspoken 'I'm-glad-you're-sort-of-okay's into the hug.
But... well, they were in Potions, weren't they? Abey had... sort of completely forgotten about that. Like, completely actually. But he let Derf get back to his desk when the hug was (regrettably) over, and tried to wiped the tears off of his face.
A little difficult, as they weren't actually properly stopping. Not for very long. So now Abey was just sort of, stood in the middle of the room, crying. Where everyone could see him. A little lost on what to do (for some reason) Abey looked around for the Slytherin girl again (Daisy), because she had been the closest to him a moment ago. The person he really wanted, now that Derf was back at his desk, was Junia, but they were still in the middle of class and Abey wasn't really sure if he'd get in trouble for seeking comfort from her right now, when they were supposed to be... answering that question he'd missed. And other potiony things.
Giving a little hiccough, Abey rubbed at his eyes again, trying breathe through the overwhelmed feeling so he could sort of... unfreeze his feet from the floor and get back to his seat where he might stand out less.
Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite
She was overwhelmed in the worst sort of way. There were suddenly many people at their table including a professor, the smell of throw up, and something about points and detention.
Jessa's brows creased as her head began to swim a little. It was hard to focus on any one thing at the moment and the girl had been adamantly trying to focus on the lesson today. For just a second, blue eyes went to Professor Canteberry. They'd already said they wouldn't taste again, there was literally no need for her to bring in threats after that. It was counter intuitive and a wasted effort. Equally a waste, cleaning the floor after she'd already done so--unless she'd missed a spot.
While everyone swarmed her friend, Jessa eased away from her table by a bit, trying to get a look to see if she'd really not gotten everywhere when she'd originally cast. Wouldn't surprise her. In this mini chaos, concentration was proving harder to come by. She made a note of the tea she'd been invited to, offering the smallest of smiles to Olivia for being invited at all. Small distractions like these kept her from being entirely overwhelmed.
Unfortunately, she wasn't in much of a position to answer the next question. By now Jessa couldn't even focus on that. Somewhere in the back of her mind the Professor was offering something to Derf and he was saying something...else--but had told Abey he was fine. She may have cleaned her own table, as she'd been set to do, but apparently that was a job for the Gryffindors? The young girl couldn't help feel robbed of an opportunity to further polish her spells but soon found it to be the least of her worries as her gaze fell to the parchment she'd drawn on.
There was no salvaging this one, it was soaked and smelly. Jessa nodded along somewhat despondently to Derf's apology as she lifted the parchment. "Evanesco." It was frankly done for and Derf hadn't gotten to see the picture she'd drawn of his favourite dolphin--one of the greater tragedies really.
There was an anxious sort of twitch as she watched Emmeline fail at the spell the first time. Of course she understood no one got it on the first go but it made her wish all the more the Professor had left her to clean it rather than invite two more persons over to the table. So much distraction. So much contamination. Hardly the best place for an experiment, something potions often were. Regardless of the outcome, she would repeat this potion on her own later, when there wasn't all...this.
The parchment slid in her direction caught her attention from the corner of her eyes. Looking over at Derf, she offered the faintest smile before listlessly sprinkling a bit of the powder onto it. Gradually, however, the smile got wider and wider until it was nearly a grin. "How long d'you think the ink will last?" Since, y'know, it WASN'T ink at all. Because she was definitely keeping this, even if she had to duplicate herself a copy. "I'd drawn you Aqua but..." Yeah...vanished. "Sorry."

First, however... this exercise.
With a grunt, Olivia uncorked the phial...collecting a fresh quill to use for this experiment. It wouldn't do to have residual ink mucking up the chemical reaction. Science... Gosh, this was such a Ravenclaw thing to be doing. At the thought of Ravenclaws, she sought out Rooney Bronwyn's face, because... Well, he was the most Ravenclaw of all the Ravenclaws, and she just so happened to be in love with him. Liv wouldn't devote this to their love, though. They had enough things speaking to the power of that... For just a moment, she glanced at her hand. It still surprised her to see the bit of jewelry there. Surprised, and scared her....... But that was for thinking about later.
After a few moments of thought, she carefully drew out a Disney movie title. The one that summed up her love affair with one, Rooney A. Bronwyn.
Beauty and the Beast.
Uncorking the second phial, she tilted it slightly over the slowly drying ink, tapping out the dusty substance. When it all burned away...she waited for further instructions... because... was that it? Whut?
"Science, Professor." As the Lion!lady just been thinking a moment before. "It's like Floo powder and fire. It's magical, yes...but also chemical, on some level."
............ Her upset!ickle senses were tingling. Not that they'd have to be tingling for her to make out the broken sobbing amongst the dull roar of her peers. Eyes searching out a smol, upset face, Olivia was surprised to see that it was Abey. Sure, Derf, had gotten sick off the substance he'd so foolishly taste-tested...but this response... Well, who didn't know that the two Second Years were best friends? And given Abey's trauma from the previous term...
Had Professor Canterbury not heard the crying?
Not wanting to add to all the chaos surround the small Lion, as many others were already aiding him, Liv pulled a spare bit of parchment and began drawing out his name in pretty calligraphy, Abraham Botros Jr. After a few quick moments, the blonde added a little note of "Would you like to have tea after class? Derf and Jessa can come, too. - Olivia"
Neatly folding up the sketch and note into a small origami butterfly, she animated it to fly (and land) just in front of him on his workstation surface; where the wings continued to flutter and beat. So he could open it whenever he was ready. No rushing.
The professor go a glance of t Miss Phillips message. Hmmmm. Favorite movie possibly? She smiled at the gryffindor girl. ”Thank you, Miss Phillips. A answer that I was hoping for, very good.” She had also noted the kindest, whatever it was in the form of a origami butterfly. She gave her another smile and nod.

He looked between Derf and Jessa and the Professor and then he looked to the sound that drew his attention from it. That was the crying of little Abey. Panic flashed over the face of the Head Boy and he went to step in that direction and encourage the younger boy that he would leave with him if he wanted that time out from everything happening in the room. However, the whole energy of everything happening was a little too much for Roo to want to get involved with and so he stayed at his bench, ready to step in if really necessary.
This was all a whole lot of wow for poor Professor Canterbury, honestly. And that Hufflepuff kid needed to get some stomach settlers in his system or just not eat before he came to class.
Did it smell of sick in here still? Or was the scent just stuck in his nose?
There clearly was a lot happening right now and the last time Rooney had been in a situation with this much going on, it was time that he didn't want to be revisiting. So he took a deep breath, focused on the parchment he was dealing with and began to hum the first song he had been learning for Miss Phyllis' show. Had to get ahead if he was going to be perfect for taking the stage with his idol in two years. As he went back to the doodle he had been working on, he tried to remember what part of the parchment he had drawn out a stage and a spotlight. Not so much a doodle, but it was all just simple lines and something that he etched out on more than a daily basis.
He hoped that he had the positioning right, and started to sculpt the words 'Keep me where the light is' underneath the bottom of the stage. Words he wanted to live by and was trying his hardest to right now. Roo looked up at the question from the Professor and raised his hand. "The older kids at my Muggle drama camp a few years ago made this black snake thing one day in our science experiment workshop. I think it was baking soda, spirit and sugar? On a plate of sand. Was pretty cool."
Ohhh that reminded Ciara of those black snake things, they were popular in states for the fourth of July. ”Yes, Mister Bronwyn. In the states for the fourth of July they have something that looks like a tablet when a flame hits it reacts to it.” It was a mess afterward but fun to watch.

Perhaps not the best example when a kid had just puked and the smell was still lingering but oh well.
Well yes, chemical reactions from the tummy had just happened here. ”Good answer, Mister Carden. The acid in our stomachs break the food down, so it can continue through the digestive system.”

"A chemical reaction is a process hat involves the conversion of a substance to another through molecular interactions. An example of this can be the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. "Could you define the 'liquid', professor?" And it also bothered her slightly that everything in this potion seemed to be related to the demiguise somehow. Surely there were other ingredients? Granted, they hadn't even learned about the potion itself yet, but...
Anyway, the task was pretty straightforward and she complied: She wrote down 'A note' on the parchment with the clear liquid, and then proceeded to sprinkle some pearl dust on it. This all seemed pretty cool, but the real question was: Would they be able to take some of this to their dormitories?
Anyway, okay, there was PUKE and puke was BAD and she had a really really sensitive nose - but she immediately brought out her small bottle of perfume and applied it on her wrist in abundance. Better to die in flower smells instead of puke!
"A chemical reaction is when two or more different materials interact with each other on molecular or atomic scale, and they form a new type of material which may or may not carry the characteristics of the original materials. An example to this is gold ore processing: Gold ore is treated with Sodium-cyanide,
and it is possible to obtain pure gold in the end."
Was puke gone yet?
”THe liquid Miss Moss is salva, a small amount of blood and water is what the tincture is.” There now that was clarified she would reclarified it in a few minutes. ”And Gold ore is a good example.” She nodded solemnly to the Ravenclaw. Very good.

Seriously, though. Shaking her head, she turned towards her desk once again. As per instructions, she sprinkled the pearl dust on the parchment.. and slowly the words appeared. Phew.
As for the professor's question, she thought about it for a few minutes. Um. She finally raised a hand and answered. "A chemical reaction is where one or more products are converted into one or more different kinds of products that may or may not retain the properties of the original products. Example.... uh.. isn't photosynthesis a chemical reaction?"
”Yes. That’s a chemical reaction. Photosynthesis is a Chemical reaction. , water and carbon dioxide combine to form glucose and oxygen.”

He turned his attention to the parchment, quill, and vials in front of him. This part of the lesson seemed cool, even though he wasn't quite sure what they were getting at. Brent collected the vial of clear liquid then set about writing his message. It said:
Thank Merlin I don't have to take Arithmancy this term.
It was just something random that came to mind at the last second. He closed the first vial then reached for the second one. Opening it, he took a pinch of the mixture and tossed it onto his parchment, being careful not to spill the dust everywhere. His message now read:
Thank Merlin I don't have to take Arithmancy this term. Well, now that was pretty cool...
Ewww...
Somebody had thrown up? Disgusting. Derf...duuuude. What was going on? Brent tried not to look in that direction, because even though he was a guy, he still felt like he had a weak stomach when somebody puked everywhere.
Anyway...
So now they were delving into Muggle chemistry, and Brent slowly felt his brain cells dying a slow and painful death. He had been taught this before, but it had been a while back. Slowly, he raised his hand. "Isn't it when you change what something is made of?" he asked. "It's pretty much creating something else entirely."
Also, he really wished he hadn't come to class quite so close to being late. Kane and Skylar had gotten to sit together...
”In short yes, When two or more chemicals are combined to make another chemical. Good job, Mister Westwood.” Not quite the scientific definition, but she understood the Slytherins point.

The fourth year automatically shut her eyes to keep herself together, and it seemed as though other people were starting take care of it, which was completely fine by her. She was fine with cleaning up spit-up from her younger siblings, but chunks of whatever, from teenagers, was completely different.
And it smelled weird.
Distracting herself, she sprinkled pearl dust on her parchment, as the words she'd written earlier appeared on her paper: Slytherin is the best house. It certainly was, given that at least they didn't go around taste-testing unknown samples.
Oh, and the Professor had asked about chemical reactions. Um, can someone explain to her, HOW her peers knew so much about muggle chemical reactions? Did they all have private tutors for HIGH SCHOOL level muggle classes?? She did know something though.
"The fire burning is a chemical reaction," Skylar said simply, noticing a flowery smell nearby (Katherine's perfume she sprayed)
”Fire is a chemical reaction, when carbon dioxide, water vapor, oxygen and nitrogen are combined.”

It could be so much grosser. Didn't he know?
"Professor, chemical reactions are standard and predictable ways that multiple elements interact to create something different. No matter how many times you combine your ingredients, the reaction will be the same. I mean, technically, every potion we brew is a chemical reaction."
”Yes, that’s right. Not matter how many times, the outcome is always the same.” Nod. Nod.

She'd been about to reveal it when the chaos happened on the other side of the room, and she figured it was probably best to ignore it. She had OWLs to pass later this year! Talking of which, she'd been going over reactions as part of her revision.

Instant relief too, though Char wasn't sure if the spell would help with the sink in the entire room or just in her vicinity, either way it was far less unpleasant now.

Meanwhile the message Levi had written revealed itself when she sprinkled the pearl dust on and she shot Levi a smile. "Not so bad so far!" The lesson that was, and honestly she was hoping that would just get to do more note passing and no brewing. And yes even with the vomiting and, oh, was Abey crying? Why???? Even with that, it could have been way more terrible (read: boring) so Char was in a good mood.
And ohhh a new note from Levi! She sprinkled on more be pearl dust and watched it reveal itself.
Yes, she could grow used to passing notes in class.
Ciara noted the anti odor charm from Miss Kettleburn. That had helped. ”Yes, cooking. Chemical reactions happening within the ingredients. “

She answered the teacher's question aloud, "Almost everything in the natural world is some kind of chemical reaction. Two gasses mix and you get air or water; you mix oil, eggs, and flour and you get a cake. The heat from the oven causes a chemical reaction that bakes it. My sister is a squib and she has to go to a dermatologist for her acne and the tetracycline the muggle doctor gives her makes a chemical reaction in her skin that makes her smell like garlic. And, yeah, it kind of cleaned up her face."

Since there had already been several detailed answers about what a chemical reaction was, she decided to provide an example.
Shay raised her hand and then began to speak. "One example of a chemical reaction occurs in baking. When you mix baking powder with a liquid, like milk or water, they make carbon dioxide bubbles. That makes your bread or cake rise." Shay recalled one disastrous attempt when she had forgotten to add baking powder to her batter. It did not end well.

She could totally see that, and not just because she had lived on a farm since she was five.
Oh, so they were supposed to go ahead and sprinkle the dust onto their parchment? Okay then. Pouring some of the vial's contents onto the paper, and flashed, and revealed a misshapen star. "Cool," she said in amazement at what had just happened. "Professor?" she said raising her hand, "Will it still work if it dries?" She frowned, looking at the bottle, "And isn't there some spell that can be used to reveal invisible writing?"
Using the Tincture she scribble on her parchment while she thought about the question posed to the class. Then of course, she poured way more than she needed onto it causing more shapes to appear. Finally she raised her hand "Um, don't chemical reactions happen in baking all the time? Like when you pour yeast into warm water and sugar for making bread? It makes a gas that causes the dough to rise. So I guess a Chemical reaction is when two or more things combine to cause well... a reaction. I mean, like they cause something to happen, unlike say, pouring food coloring into water." That all made sense, right?
”Yes, it will still work after it dries. Yes, but it works with real invisible ink not this.” Same reaction everytime. ”Yes, bread raising is a reaction to the chemicals mixed together.”

”Yes, Miss Wright you are correct.”

Aslan blanched, her hand covering her mouth as her dark eyes sought the form of the Professor, watching closely as she told off Derfael and Jessa for their curious, but ill-timed adventures in taste-testing, but left the clean up to Levi Kenning and a Hufflepuff she didn't know the name of. With a quick wave of hr unearthed wand, Aslan evaporated the scent from her work station and attempted to remember what Professor Canterbury ha been saying before the sick- and the telling off- and the crying Abey-
Oh, he was crying.
Big Hearted. Teal and purple, she hadn't been very conscious of... things in general last term, but the fear had stuck with her along with a worry she had never voiced. She looked on with sympathy and yet, for now, the Gryffindor kept her mouth shut.
..........
Oh right, Demiguise.
Right.
Aslan rested her face in her palm. her notes, despite her forgetfulness, were quite full with the professor's instructions. She blinked her vision clear and quietly began to read. Quite sudden;y, Aslan tutted aloud. Invisibility Potion was not at all something she was unfamiliar with the creating and brewing of. It was no wonder she had allowed her mind to slip away and visit more interesting realms of thought, for this was neither challenging nor new. She was becoming more and more frustrated, the terms before had been mildly interesting but of late she'd found herself less and less engaged.
She wanted theory. She wanted complicated, a puzzle she couldn't cut through with a dull blade.
Would it be like this even at University? Would she constantly find herself bored even with her favorite subjects? Aslan spent so much time musing on the fallings of academia that when she finally did look up again it was with only half a clue as to what they were supposed to be doing.
She read again.
Tincture-
demiguise essence-
invisibility-
pearl powder-
Invisibility potion. Passing notes.
Aslan flicked her wand, the magic smoothing out her yellowed parchment until it was stiff as a board (and light as a feather). That having been down, she did as the others had and dipped her simple black quill into the clear solvent. She paused, dark gaze on following each little drop of clear liquid as it fell with a tiny splash onto the parchment.
She drew a long, spiraling swirl and added therein a few tiny stars and a little sliver of a crescent moon to entertain herself. Aslan glanced to her side. One of the Peale's was sitting by her and seemed as unoccupied as Aslan. the Gryffindor slipped her the note.
There, see? she could be involved.

Okay so maybe this lesson was a little too much for some between the vomiting, and the chemistry element she had thrown in. But at least the quiet ones were doing the experiment, so it wasn’t think they was sleeping, or dozing off, staring out into space. But the images playing his his head could not be calmed right now, although the voices of a few of his classmates - Emmeline, Jessa, and Abey specifically, did help him pull out of the darkness plaguing his fragile second year mind and heart a little. Levi's hand on his shoulder gave him a bit of a fright and thus jumped under the older boy's touch. "....maybe," he managed to squeak out, feeling all sorts of tingly from Levi's hand and the sincerity oozing from it and causing his pale cheeks to flush eeever so slightly. His blue eyes slowly shifted to Emmeline and swallowed before answering her question. "Had a bad daydream..." he offered up in explanation.
Needless to say, any mention of point loss and detention went in one ear and out the other - those were hardly important things to be afraid of after what they all had experienced last year - the second year's head snapped up when he heard Abey's voice. Which, no offense to everyone else who was being incredibly kind and compassionate right now to both himself and Abey (BUT HOLY FLAMING SALANDERS DAISY HAD SEEN HIM THROW UP HOW MORTIFYING!) but his Gryffindor was kind of sort of SUPER important right now.
And seeing Abey cry because of him. NOOOOOOOOOOO! Although a bit wobbly, Derf closed the gap between them and gave his fellow second year a lopsided but SINCERE and SINCERELY TIGHT hug. "I'msortofokay," he promised. Squishing Abey a bit more tightly, Derf hobbled them around on the spot in a slow circular fashion so he was facing the professor and Abey's back to her. "I-I don't need the Healer, profes-ss-sor," he noding weakly. "jus-st.....water?"
And maybe permission to eat one of the chocolate frogs in his pocket to get the taste out of his mouth.
As for chemical reactions...that was not something he was well versed in. At all. But several of his classmates seemed to know quite a bit so he was inclined to simply nod his head (inside his head because more nodding made him feel dizzy and queasy) at their answers.
He probably should let go of Abey and go back to his seat now, right? Right. In...just another few moments.
Okay. Now he was letting go...and, after giving Abey a small reassuring smile, he returned to his seat with Jessa. "Not right now," he said, shaking his head at the idea of a walk. "......I'msorryIthrewuponyou."

Later.

The class had started but she wasn't really paying attention, busy as she was doodling distractedly on the parchment and thinking. It was almost sunny inside the classroom and summer was still too close, so of course her mind wandered. It wandered towards sunny days, dogs playing in the water, white sand and --
"Maxton." She whispered to her brother, only catching the end of Professor Canterbury's explanation. Something about dust and pearls? Some liquid involved? The sixth year tensely rubbed the side of her neck as her eyes quickly darted around the room, before returning to her brother. Another whisper. "I might need to borrow your notes." Which was probably not the way this was supposed to go. Maybe she would find Levi after class and ask to duplicate his notes. Yes. That way she wouldn't be asking her second year brother and. Well, it was a good plan.
For later. They had stuff to do now, clearly. She grabbed the quill and copied what Maxton did did just as instructed. Despite the fact that her brain knew she was writing something, it was pretty weird not to see it being written. Could she even spell if she couldn't see what she was spelling? Were the words all jumbled up on top of each other? Nevertheless, Daisy wrote, hopefully, THE CANNONS STINK AND SO DOES MAXTON and passed the parchment to her brother's side of the workstation. "You sound far too amused for this to be any good." Daisy commented, sprinkling pearl dust on top of --- Oh. Hilarious.
Daisy rolled her eyes and swatted his arm. "I do not smell, Maxton Robert. You're full of lies, you know." Which was rich considering what she had written. Not that the Chudley Cannons part was a lie -- it really, really wasn't, she would like that to be clear. She was ready to explain it all to Maxton but then Hogwarts -- was Hogwarts.
The Hufflepuff kid from the feast, the one she swore she recognised but could never remember his name, was puking, Levi was there and Abey was... Well. Remember how her faith in Hogwarts' staff had been broken last year? Yeah, it broke all over again. So she left the workstation and found her way to the slight confusion as fast as she could, grimacing at the look of all the vomit but satisfied that people were dealing with that. She turned to the second year Gryffindor, wanting to offer physical comfort but unsure of how to do that because she still remembered watching as Abey and Simon had exited the portal last term and she really didn't want to make things worse. She sent Levi a quickly look before sort of awkwardly standing by the younger Gryffindor, crouching down to stand at his level. "Abey, he's fine. There's no need to cry, Professor Canterbury is going to make sure he's fine." Or Levi was. One of those. Her hands twitched at her side, but she tried to keep her face as comforting as possible.
Again. Remind her how no one had been fired?

"Sorry."
Ciara’s main concern right now was the student who was sick at the moment. She seen that Miss Carden was reassuring mister Botros. She send him a sympathetic smile.”He’ll be okay Abey. Do you need anything?” Puke and tears were two things that she had not wanted in the lesson today. But here they were. She turned to Mister Kenning and Miss Sparkles. Why the blinking, had he not asked to help?
Ciara joined in and helped them. It was a mess, so the more the better. Then she turned back to Derf. ”If you are sure all you need is some water then. I will take you after class to see the healer.” She would take him to get him checked out. She summoned a glass from the shelves and poured out the water from her wand and slid it in front of him.
She looked around at everyone, everything was fine now. ”Back to your seats. Finish up with you need too, Thank you all for your answers and help.” But they were starting to run out of time and they did want to brew this invisibility potion right?
”A little information about this potion, once you drink it the effects will last up to one hour, you may take it two times equaling two hours. Now if you happen to come across demguise hairs you can add them instead of the tincture and that will strengthen the potion, making it last three hours. You can use it on nonliving things, with one drop the effects last a little longer on non living things. If it is brewed correctly it will be a silvery-white color. Lastly, you can use in as invisible ink, just like with the experiment, with the tincture and pearl dust.” Were they ready for this potion? Some of them really did act like they were excited, She tapped the board and revealed the recipe. ”Here is a list of other ingredients that you will need and the recipe, I will be walking around as you work, if you have a question raise your hand. Now get brewing.” She said with a smile. Hopefully everyone was settled down enough to focus on working on the potion. Only time would tell, perhaps she should pass out vials of a calming draught.

OOC: Alrightly so the rest of the lesson will be brewing the invisibility potion. I'm here if questions arise. If you want to jump in and/or catch up feel free to do so. I think I got everyone, I lost the reply twice third time was the charm apparently. Thanks again for baring with me and my first lesson. You will have until May 11,
at around 10pm EST. No limit on post work at you own pace but most importantly have fun with it. I'm grabbing answers while I'm on break this afternoon I had an emergency this morning.

Kirk had went on ahead to sprinkle the pearl dust over the message he wrote. His head then turned over to the situation between the younger Gryffindor and Jessa. His face appeared blank and he merely blinked. What did happen? He didn't know, but apparently the little guy ate something that didn't sit well and it ended up on her. Least that's what he thought before the situation was being dealt with.
Oh, chemical reactions? He didn't feel like answering right now and he continued writing secret messages to test out the dust.. but if he did, he would've talked about cooking and how some ingredients can cause a bad reaction after enough heat. Anyways though, it was time to move on as he jotted down in his note for future reference about this secret dust.
Kirk then looked up again at the instructions. Oh.. did this mean they could start already? Well then. He set the quill and book aside to gather all the ingredients. Dramatically he cracked his knuckles preparing for some brewing before starting the cauldron. Taking his wand he made the snake shaped motion inside, "Aguamenti.." Letting the water fill up halfway before letting the heat take over to boil.

All the theory stuff was really starting to bore Olly. He was relieved when it was finally time to start brewing the potion. That was the fun part. That was the reason why he was here, in Potions class. To make potions.
"Aguamenti." He filled his cauldron half full, as instruction, and set the fire beneath it, waiting for it to boil. He was excited to make this invisibility potion. There were so many things he could think of to do with it. Most of them were not exactly within the rules, though. Being invisible made sneaking out after curfew easier. Not that Olly would ever do that of course. He was still mulling things over by the time his water started boiling. He dropped in five juniper berries, one by one, and then turned to the shrivelfig. It did look a bit gross so Olly did decide to wear gloves because he didn't want his hands to have shrivelfig juice on them for the rest of the lesson. He cut it in half and slid the other half over to Noelle. Sharing is caring. Then he squeezed it, which was pretty gross, and dropped it in. He watched the potion slowly change to a light purple color. That's what the board said it was supposed to look like, so he was satisfied so far.
Kyle, despite everything, did not trust magical water to properly brew a potion. He took his cauldron to a faucet and filled it halfway with water before returning to his seat. Once he lit the fire under the cauldron, he waited for it to boil. As he waited he hummed something quietly that his father had taught him. It was more appropriate for Herbology, rather than Potions, but he had it stuck in his head anyhow. He smiled when his water came to a boil and added the juniper berries one by one. Taking out his gloves, he slipped them on before cutting the shrivelfig in half and squeezing the juice out into the cauldron. He dropped both halves in and watched as it seemed to turn a shade of lavender. That was light purple, right?

And now it's time to brew the potion.
Ava wrote up the ingredients and instruction and prepared her workstation. Obviously she's going to need the cauldron, stirrer, wand and the protective gloves. The first and the most important of the part was to assure that her cauldron was clean, clean, clean. For Merlin's sake, she got an O for her Potions OWL and she would not miss this step even though it was unwritten. "Scourgify." Ava cast the scouring charm and then moved on to the next step.
She cast the water-conjuring charm and filled it halfway into her cauldron, then setting the burner and waited until the water boiled. Moving onto the next step, the Gryffindor added juniper berries into her cauldron. She put on her gloves and cut the Shrivelfig in half. "Here's for you." She said to Shay while handing the half-shrivelfig. Ava then squeezed the shrivelfig juice out and dropped it. She watched her potion turned into light-purple color, which meant she did something right.

They would start the brewing. There were very mixed feelings about this. With all that had just transpired, Jessa couldn't help but feel her work station was a FILTHY MESS. Of course, it was likely all in her head, afterall the area had been cleaned in a sense but just the thought of possible contamination set her on edge.
Jessa fished a new piece of parchment from her bag to scribble everything she would need and the steps that should be followed. It helped her calm herself and not think about all the things that would likely go wrong now.
With that done, she made her way over to the cupboards with her ingredients list and began the hunt for double the quantity of everything on here so Derf could have some. In all it took two trips to get it all back to the table, nudging them all closer to the top so she would have a bit of free space to work while leaving them close enough for either her or her friend to take freely. Jessa grabbed her cauldron and cast a thorough scourgify to make sure not a speck of dirt or dust or anything else remained. "Aguamenti." Half way? Was this half? The young girl got onto her toes to have a better look inside the cauldron, ending the spell once she was sure she'd gotten all she needed.
"Incendio." Now to wait for it to come to a boil. In the meantime, her hand rose into the air. "May I have another vial of demiguise tincture, Professor? This one might have my saliva in it and I don't wanna have the results messed up."
Jessa pulled her equipment together, waiting both for an answer and for the water to come to a boil. Much like the cauldron, she went through meticulously getting them cleaned with the charm before scourgifying the table altogether. Yes, it'd just been done but it didn't make her skin crawl any less.

To say Daisy was perplexed would have been a gross understatement. Daisy was pretty sure that was in some kind of alternate universe where adults were heartless. It was a difficult thing for her to understand, considering how caring her own parents were, but there was no doubt about it. Professor Canterbury simply didn't care that a second year was crying in the middle of her class. Or, well, she hadn't at first. She seemed to be making a feeble attempt at caring now. Still, her Mum had always told her to try and not judge people too fast. Maybe the woman hadn't been briefed about the events of the previous last term; maybe she had but didn't realise that Abey was one of the boys who got taken; maybe --
Maybe Hogwarts and its staff expected its students to move on from trauma with a snap of their fingers. Maybe Abey wasn't supposed to remember. The sixth year breathed deeply through her nose.
She remained crouched down next to Abey as he grabbed at her sleeve, seemingly listening to her but unable to stop crying. It was ... heartbreaking and infuriating and, honestly, it should be enough for everybody to stop what they were doing and check that he was okay. Or maybe even just staff and badges because otherwise, what was the point of them? Still, maybe he would get too overwhelmed, maybe that's what they were all thinking. Or maybe. Alternate universe. It was almost impossible to understand what he had said but she had definitely heard the word die in there so it didn't take much to get the gist of what the second year was trying to say.
The thing about children, Daisy had learned from her siblings, was that when they were really scared, they were quiet. When the tears were accompanied by screams and kicks, they were usually faking it. But when there were silent tears running down their faces, that when Daisy knew it was serious. And Abey, there was no mistaking it, was a child.
There was a real sense of relief when Derfael -- thank you Levi, for the name -- hugged Abey, saving Daisy from having to say anything. She didn't know what to say, anyway. But as the boys hugged, she watched them for a while before standing up. She awkwardly shuffled her feet and looked over as Professor Canterbury, Levi and the others cleaned the sick away. The Hufflepuff seemed to be okay and so everybody returned to their seats, he included -- except for Abey. Well, that was okay.
What wasn't okay was how he was still crying. And looking at her like that. To be honest, she had thought that she would go back to her seat and back to whatever it was they were supposed to be doing, but Daisy couldn't and wouldn't bother to complain. If Abey needed a few more minutes then Abey needed a few more minutes and that was what mattered. Levi took good notes, he would let her duplicate them. She had seen him plenty of times around the Slytherin table; so many times he was almost an honorary snake to her. And little snakes needed to be protected. Smiling softly, she crouched back down. "Here's what we gonna do." She whispered quietly, so that only he would hear. Just because she thought this was currently more important than whatever potion they were brewing, it didn't mean she wanted to be disrespectful towards the staff member. Gently, carefully, she placed her hands on his arms, trying to center him."You're going to breathe and try and calm down, and when you're ready, I'll walk you to your desk." She looked around the room, not really sure of where Abey had been sitting before all of this and her eyes found Junia. She looked back at the Gryffindor. "Or to your cousin, if you'd prefer that." One of her hands moved from his arm to stretch in front of him, fingers wiggling in his direction. Hey Abey. Hold us."Just let me know when you're ready."
Let your light shine || Be the sun || You're important. Always.
It was a little hard to pay attention and she really needed top marks in potions...
Pulling her quill out, she scribbled what was on the board onto her parchement.

Noelle went to get and make sure she had all the ingredients to her potion, while making sure without asking, if everyone was okay. Taking a seat again, she started her potion. She grinned when Olly passed her half of something. This was one of the many reasons why he was her person. She cleaned her cauldron first before filling it half with water from her wand. Then she started a flame and looked at the next step.

Kane grinned at Skylar who offered to switch messages with him. Although if it was a love letter to his brother, he might puke. Which was apparently a thing that was happening in this lesson...Kane was able to block most of that out though. Which was hard because it was TERRIBLY distracting.
"Sure!" he exclaimed, taking his parchment and pushing it over to her. Then he took the dust and sprinkled it on, waiting patiently for the message to reveal itself. He chuckled and shook his head. "The best house? That's debatable," he teased before turning back to the professor.
They were moving on to the actual BREWING part, which was always exciting. Once they were released to do their thing, Kane hurried up to the ingredients cabinet and gathered everything Canterbury had written on the board. Once his arms were full, he walked back to his station and bumped it all unceremoniously onto his desk. Alright, let's DO this!
Taking out his cauldron, he pulled out his wand and pointed to the empty inside. "Aguamenti!" he grumbled. He'd been working on that one lately and smiled as water began to trickle from his wand and into the cauldron. He stopped once the cauldron was half full and then pointed his wand at the base. "Incendio!" he exclaimed, and now all that was left to do was wait until it came to a boil.

Okay, there were a whole lot of... things going on right now and Henry didn't know where to focus his attention. Derf was vomiting, Abey was crying, other students were rushing in to help out, and he was pretty sure he caught the professor frowning at him earlier for not answering her question when he just didn't know. And disapproval didn't always sit well with him.
He had the fleeting thought that maybe this sort of thing was the reason why he could never focus in Potions and had never been all that good at the subject. There was always some sort of chaos happening which was so detrimental for the short attention span he had for this subject. And it wasn't to say that he wasn't sympathetic. He sure was and likely would have stepped in to help himself if Levi and Carden and whoever else hadn't already. Other people seemed to have things under control now though and he tried to mentally force himself to focus.
At least they hadn't yet started the actual potion, so maybe he had a chance of completing it correctly. If he could focus from this point on. The invisible ink thing seemed really cool, but he hadn't gotten that far and wondered if he should just focus on brewing the potion correctly before he got distracted again. Maybe he could take the vials with him to try that part on his own. But for now, focusing on the potion. Yes.
First, it was probably best to write down the actual ingredients and steps in his notes though, so he set about doing that until his hand started to cramp up a bit. It was a lot of writing. Once he shook out his hand a bit, he tried casting the first three spells - Scourgify, Aguamenti, and Incendio - non-verbally. He had just managed a few non-verbals by the end of last term, those three included since he had to cast them regularly for Potions class, though they weren't quite as strong as his spoken spells. It was clear that a summer without magic, or maybe it was his lack of focus, didn't help much as his cauldron probably wasn't quite clean enough, the water came out of his wand at a slow, but steady trickle, and he did need to recast his Incendio verbally so the burner would stay lit. But he managed and would just have to keep practicing. As he waited for the water to boil, he set about collecting the rest of his ingredients.

Did he need anything? That... was the million galleon question really actually, and Abey didn't know how to answer the professor because the answer was that yes he DID, but that he didn't know what the anything was. He didn't know what he needed, not right now, in this moment. Other than to not be so terrified of literally actually nothing, but... that wasn't as simple as conjuring up a glass of water.
So... he just shook his head, even though that was technically lying. It was, Abey knew, much easier to pretend that the answer to something was much simpler than trying so very hard to try and find the right words for something that you didn't really actually understand at all.
The Slytherin girl, though, she was still right there, and even though Abey didn't know her at all, not one bit really, he felt better for knowing that she was still there. "I'm... s-sorry..." For being silly, that was, and for taking her attention away from the class, for being a bother. All those things Abey probably would have elaborated on, but... well... the whole crying thing.
Breath and calm down, he could do that, couldn't he? Breathe... and calm down...
He nodded, and he tried. No matter what else was going on, that was for sure; Abey was trying. Trying to calm down, because he really did want to be calm, and he really didn't want to disrupt everyone else, but he'd gone and done it anyway. He focused on the feeling of her hands on his arms, of the floor under his feet, and the things he could see, and the things he could hear. He breathed in... and out... and in... and out... iiiiiin.... ouuuutttttt.... heeeeeeeeeeee... hooooooooooo... heeeeeeeeeeeeeee... hooooooooooo...
Calmer. He was calmer, and it really didn't take too long at all. Not as long as he thought it would actually. There were still some tears, but it was like... residual emotion just leaking out of his eyes actually, and he didn't feel quite so aggressively panicked anymore. Wiping at his eyes with the back of his hand, he quite unabashedly reached out to take the Slytherin's hand with his other one.
"'M'sorry," he mumbled again, feeling extra extra silly actually that he had had such a moment in front of everyone, and required such assistance, and been such a distraction.

Brent tried not to pay attention to the puking and the crying. Other people were handling those matters, and if he didn't have to get involved with anything dealing with puke, he wasn't going to. Besides that, the lesson was moving on, so there was something he could focus on.
He tried to make mental notes of how to get the potion to last either one, two, or three hours. He wasn't sure he wanted to be invisible for three hours. Like, what if he didn't become visible again or something? That really couldn't happen, could it? Looked they were ready to get started then.
Brent's station was already set up, so he just gave his cauldron a good cleaning, as well as the tools he'd be using. He peered at the instructions then got started. "Aguamenti!" he said, and the cauldron began filling up with water. When the cauldron was halfway full, he ended the spell and turned on the heat underneath the cauldron. Hopefully it would come to a boil soon.
Dude. He wished he had somebody to work with or something.

All of the distractions meant that Rooney hadn't traded his parchment with anyone and it seemed like everyone had gotten theirs all done. So he sprinkled on the pearl powder to his own drawing, sighing as it eventually revealed that his words had been written over the top of the stage he drew. Clearly, that hadn't been his attention fully on the task at hand which was sad. He'd been really set for this to work out.
With another sigh, he copied down the recipe for this potion with one hand and put his other up in the air. "Professor Canterbury? Is this any sort of specific invisibility potion? Like could it be specified as anything in an exam? Do we just add everything immediately as it's mentioned? Or is there a time frame with each step..?" He wanted to cover all of his bases, okay? He had exams at the end of this year. The most important set of exams so far in his life and he needed to know everything possible that could crop up in this.
Rooney set up all of the things that he was going to need, equipment and his ingredients before going to wash his hands once more in the sink at the side of the room before returning to his bench. He ensured that his cauldron was free of anything that could contaminate his potion with a quick cleaning spell, before checking with the instructions about how much water he was going to need. Wand pointed, he cast an easy "Aguamenti" until his cauldron was full with water half way. And then he turned up the heat, waiting carefully until the water gave away the signs of coming to a boil. Those little bubbles were tell tale enough and so he plopped in the five juniper berries one by one. Plop, plop, plop, plop, plop. Shrivelfig next.

Katy was feeling a little skeptical of some of the ingredients listed for this potion, although she'd figured out ages ago that not all chemical reactions were intuitive. So if it seemed a little weird to find silver glitter in a potion, she was just going to go with it. Either she made invisibility potion, or she didn't. Either way, it was interesting to see what happened along the way.
Katy scrubbed out the bottom of her cauldron with a casual flick of the wand, her attention already on the ingredients she needed to gather. How many trips would it take? Should she grab some for Oliver, who was looking a little stressed beside her? "I've got you, mate. Try not to vom like that little sprog did, ok?" She skipped off to gather supplies for the both of them, only needing two trips to bring it all back to their work station.
Once she was returned and had taken a long moment to organize her ingredients, Katy filled her cauldron with water from her wand. "Aguamenti." She adjusted a flame under the cauldron and let it heat up while she took her tiny Potions knife to the shrivelfig. Tiny but super sharp, because how else could you get the cut exactly as you wanted it?
The water burbled merrily a few moments later, which meant it was time to start adding things. Careful addition of the juniper berries, to keep from splashing hot water on herself or Lupin, followed by tossing in the juiced shrivelfig. Already, the potion was taking on a nice woodsy scent, earthy and a bit sweet. Probably the berries. And it looked purple, although it was a bit hard to tell.

Yes, great example! Olivia was on the moon. She was doing so well. Yes! Hold up. Don't get too ahead of yourself. You still have a potion to make, reminded a voice in her head. Oh. right. Ahem.
Someone had been sick, had they? Olivia quirked an eyebrow curiously to see what happened momentarily before averting her eyes. It was not her problem to deal with. Someone else more capable than her would see to it. I hope they're alright, she thought before directing her attention back to the Professor.
Right. Potions class. Where were they?
Ingredients. Ah. She scribbled that down into her notebook and then waited for further instruction. She checked her station, making sure that everything was in place. When it was, Olivia pulled out her wand and began giving her cauldron a good scrub. Once clean, she cast, "Augmenti" and then followed it with, "Incendio! to the burner. Now she would have to wait for the water t boil. Olivia checked her steps.

Now to the practical part of the lesson. Etta first noted down the brewing instructions on her parchment carefully. Once she finished, she went about collecting all the ingredients first.. and there seemed to be quite a lot. Moth wings, though. She tried not to look too disgusted as she headed back to her desk.
After checking the instructions once again, she started with the brewing process. She cast an aquamenti until the cauldron was half-full with water... okay, done. She turned on the heat and adjusted it, watching the water slowly come to a boil. Easy-peasy. What was next? Juniper berries, right. She added them one by one into the cauldron.. slowly, making sure she didn't splash the hot water on herself.
