Welcome to the Telescope Deck!
In years past this room was called the Hogwarts Observatory Deck. This is the same circular room as before but Professor Salvatore remodeled it a bit. She added in some high tech telescopes all over the room for more than one student to use at a time. If all telescopes are being used while you're here please have a seat in one of the many comfortable couches in this room.
On the walls are star charts to help you with your work. If you forgot some parchment or quills there are some on the table in the corner with all the supplies that you can think of but please be sure to put them back where you found them.
The Telescope Deck allows you to look at the billions of stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. You do not need to ask Professor Salvatore for permission to be in this room. This room is open for all students and professors to use. There's only two rules with this room, pick up after yourselves and put everything back where they belong. Professor Salvatore's classroom, office and other rooms are not a place for messy children, pick up after yourselves or you'll see her wrath.
This room is best used at night when you're able to see the stars.

The best thing about it being almost winter was that it was dark outside earlier and he didn't have to break the rules by getting out of the dormitory after midnight.
It was after dinner when Mason had climbed back up the moving staircase to go to the common room at first but instead he made his way towards the astronomy tower on the same floor after he had looked out of one the large windows and had seen the dark sky.
Reaching the telescope deck, the Ravenclaw didn't go to one of the telescopes to use but instead he wrapped his black and blue robe closer around him and sat in one of the chairs. He leaned back in the seat, resting his hands behind his head.
Nice and quiet.

The best part about winter was truly the fact that it was getting dark earlier and Katherine enjoyed looking at stars, so she made her way to the room after dinner. She found it emp - no, that boy was here.
Katherine looked at him for a moment, then shrugged to herself and sat in front of a telescope.
Rude people ain't worth her time.

It didn't take a long time before the noise of the door opening interruped the quiet around him. His eyes went to the door immediatly and when he saw that it was the girl he had sat next to during the feast, he nodded at her.
And then the girl abruptly turned around and sat behind one of the telescopes without saying a word.
How rude.
"Hello to you too" he said.

"Didn't think you'd wanna talk." She shrugged. Her tone wasn't annoyed or anything, she was merely stating her opinion.
"I'm Katherine." If he wanted to talk, introductions were in order.

She thought he didn't want to talk? Where did she even get that from? She was the one who entered the room without saying anything and had walked straight towards the telescopes.
"What makes you say that?" he asked with curiousity in his voice. Had he done something to offend her? Perhaps at the feast? He frowned as he thought, staring at the girl's sleeve without actually looking. When he honestly could not think of anything, he shrugged.
So he finally got a name with the face. Katherine. "I'm Mason" he said back.

"You thought...." he scratched the back of his neck as he leaned forward in the chair. No, that had not been his general state of being and now he wondered what others thought of him when first meeting him. He didn't like not being liked.
He didn't want to elaborate why he had been grumpy during the feast though 'cause now that a couple of days had passed it felt rather silly. "Let's say i had some things on my mind i couldn't shake off" he smiled. "Sorry if i made you uncomfortable at that time"
Was he new here? kind of?
"It's my second year here, i first went to Durmstrang" he answered her question. "Do you like stargazing?" or had she entered this room for some quiet like him at first?

Katherine smiled back at him and nodded. "Yeah, I can understand." She had had tons on her mind lately - she had probably made a lot of people uncomfortable. "You hadn't." So he could relax.
Oh? She looked surprised... but then again, why was she? She wasn't even here half of the term last year, and the other half... well.
"I do, yeah. But it's also quiet in here. People don't have the patience to look at stars for hours." She paused to give him enough time to answer if he wished, then said "Let's begin with the classics, then: Where do you like most?" Then she grinned. She bet that was a question he hated.

Well, at least he hadn't made her uncomfortable during the feast and that was what counted right? Standing up from his seat, the Ravenclaw walked towards the telescope next to hers and sat on the chair behind it. He'd never used these things before when not in Astronomy classes.
"True, but i think it's also because people who aren't from our and Gryffindor House would not want to walk those bloody stairs to see the stars. I mean" he shrugged. "Why climb stairs if you can go outside on the grounds and see the stars as well right?" he would have done the same thing had he not been sorted in to a House that was located in one of the towers. [
Her 'classic' question did not come as a surprise though. It was pretty normal for transfer students to be asked this kind of question. "Honestly, i'm not sure. Both Hogwarts and Durmstrang have good and bad things about them. Durmstrang has less floors than Hogwarts so less stairs to climb, i hate stairs by the way" he added with a laugh. "The winters in Durmstrang are brutal though compared to here so that's a plus for Hogwarts and the classes are kind of different at Durmstrang. Especially Defence Against the Dark Arts" he frowned a little. "But i guess i have to go with Hogwarts" he finally answered after a couple of moments thoughts. "Despite eh happenings" now he said that, perhaps Durmstrang was better? Ugh he couldn't make up his mind! "Have you been at Hogwarts since you were eleven?" he asked.

Well... fair enough, but Katherine shook her head.
"Because the grounds don't have telescopes? From there the best you can have is a romantic night, not an educative one." And clearly, an educative night was what should be important for people in her mind. But they generally didn't and chose to snog on the grounds (or at other places, possibly) instead... ew.
She listened to him carefully, eyes on his and all. She had heard Durmstrang was smaller... also heard about the DaDA - their education was based more on the dark arts part than defence... but in the end when he finished, she smiled. "Yeah," she said as an answer to his question, "been here, will be here until graduation." Well, hopefully. "If you know how to ride a broom, you can do so instead of climbing the stairs." She wasn't sure if riding a broom in the castle was forbidden or not, but why should it be? Though, on a second thought...
"Ask it to a professor, though. They should know if it's allowed or not." No need to cost Ravenclaw points just for comfort, y'know?
"Why did you transfer, if it's not private?"

Noelle was doing rounds. It was later in the evening. If it would have been regular curfew, she would have encountered a few students because curfew wouldn't be up yet. Alas, the lockdown was still happening. So no one was up here.
She grinned to herself as she entered the circular telescope room. She'd come here a few times but people had been here looking through the scope. Now it was empty.
Brushing her hand against the scope, she bent and peeked through. It was breathtaking. All the millions of stars. Astronomy wasn't her favorite subject by far... but who didn't love stars?

Curfew.
That was a word Declan was aware of but chose not to apply it to himself. He was used to roaming the castle after hours. The portals weren't going to stop him. It wasn't that he was fearless, or considered himself above rules, or invincible. He knew the portal could affect him as much as the next person but he couldn't sleep. He was used to not sleeping much, and he really wanted to check something out about Jupiter before he could sleep at ease.
He thought he would be by himself but he was caught by surprise. Declan froze and he held his breath wondering if he should just stupefy the person or turn around. After two seconds of holding his wand tightly he realized both options were extreme and maybe he should try some diplomacy.
"So that makes two rule breakers in this room," he said quietly. "You and I. Birds of a feather, huh?" | |

They just showed up wherever they wanted and sucked up whomever. He had seen one appear and take the Hufflepuff boy right before his eyes. It only took a split second. How did you even put up a fight? "Yeah, are you always alone?" He asked. "During your patrolling, I mean."
He nodded and smiled. "Well, there's a few ways of telling them apart for example. Do you know that Muggle nursery rhyme?" Declan asked as he took his spot behind the telescope. He bent over his tall frame to peer through it with one eye closed. "Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star? Stars twinkle or sparkle or shimmer, whichever adjective you want to use. Planets don't."
Declan stood up straight at her question. He looked over at her with mild curiosity. "Yeah, I do a bit. Do you?" Did she. Declan felt compelled to go over to her, to see what exactly her fingers were running over, what had caught her attention but he resisted. Instead, he frowned down at his itching hands. "Uh huh," he answered her still frowning down at his hands. He turned them to and fro, trying to figure their intentions out. "Cool isn't it? The way everything is connected even though it's so vast."
That or you could be morbid and be amazed at how everything was just rotating rocks in space but Declan liked to romanticize space just a little bit better than he did like being dry and sarcastic about it.

Noelle was surprised by his question. She looked back over her shoulder, peering at him. "Not always. We try to team up but there's times that doesn't always happen." Plus the castle is so big that you just have to split up to do your rounds.
She chimed in with him as he began saying the twinkle twinkle song. Only, she actually sang it a bit.. and she didn't sing that well. "Yeah I know it but like... some stars don't seem to move. or twinkle like that. " Not that she tended to look at them a lot. She wished she could look at them more, to be honest. "So are you an astronomer kind of person?" Meaning, did he like astronomy class more than most.
Her finger drifted over the picture to the left. "Orage Et Trombe" She muttered reading the words. "Doesn't that mean.... storm?" If her memory served correctly. She didn't know much but her mom tried to get them to learn more than English. It was a passing phase when they just kept saying cuss words in different languages. "And trombe.... water... water something." what was it??? "Waterspout!" Proud that she remembered. She figured she didn't need to tell him if she actually knew spanish or not. Her trouble with those 3 words were probably proof enough.
Noelle looked over her shoulder at him again when he said the last bit. The corners of her mouth turning up into a smile. "That's a nice way of thinking about it." You know, instead of floating rocks.

"Patrolling alone must be a bore," he drawled, looking up at her through his lashes. Declan stopped putting his attention on his dark brown hands. There was no point in trying to figure them out. They held no secrets for him to read, at least not at this current time. It didn't matter because Noelle was singing, badly, but singing. He barely contained a chuckle.
"That's true, but if you watch long enough you may be able to for the most part," he peered through the telescope again, finding which ones twinkled and didn't to show Noelle what he meant. "I'm a lot of things kind of person. Astronomy is one of them. Divination is another. Sleep is one too."
Noelle was doing her best at translating something off of the chart. He looked towards her with a smile, one hand on the telescope. "Is there a rude way? Something like hurtling rocks in space all just spiraling into nothingness."
Maybe throw something in about oblivion or certain death. That would for sure be the best conversation to have with an almost stranger.

It was an offer that Noelle may or may not regret. Only time would tell. Noelle's eyes dropped down to his hands and her head tilt slightly. " What's wrong with your hands?" She asked curiously, the question escaping her mouth before she could stop it.
Astronomy and Divination. Hmm. Noelle moved to the other picture on the chart. This was weird that it was talking about a solar system but also floods and such. " I can do the sleep thing." Noelle muttered absentmindedly to Declan as her eyes went to another chart. These were beginning to loose her interest so she turned back around to him.
She grinned at his bad attempt at a joke. Bad being the key word. " I mean.... stars are beautiful. Pictures of the world are beautiful. Haven't you ever wanted to just ... go out there?" She asked moving around him and looking into the telescope since he wasn't currently looking into it. She moved the telescope a little taking in other sights. " The universe is so huge. So unseen. " She hadn't really given too much thought on the subject but now as she was looking... she couldn't help but think all the things.

"I don't have a badge," Declan reminded her with a raised brow. He tapped a long index finger on his chest for extra emphasis; right where a badge could be. "Is that okay?" He had a feeling it wasn't allowed but it wasn't like he obeyed curfew. He broke the rules on a regular basis, sneaking around the shadows like it was where he belonged. In a way, he actually felt more himself when he was surrounded by the dark.
"Hmm," he hummed, stalling for an answer. "They're anxious, I think." His hands needed to just calm down. There was no room for them to be sentient. "I like the sleep thing," Declan said with a chuckle. "What other things you do? Do you paint? Any hobbies?"
Out here? Declan hummed pensively one more time. He had never really thought about it. He was always wrapped up in books, thinking about the things that couldn't easily be seen or touched. If there was an out there he thought about it, it wasn't one that could easily be traveled to.
"Where would you want to go? If you could go anywhere right now."

"Right. But I have this feeling that you're going to be out anyways.... even though you say you like sleep." Noelle grinned at him. She wasn't going to let him travel around here by himself. Not at night with the portal. If he was taken... at least someone would know right?
Huh. "Do you hands have a mind of their own?" She asked peering down at them again. They were still shaking a bit. "What are you anxious about? Anything I can help with?" she asked, feeling the need to. She peeked into the telescope again so he could answer while she took a look around again.
"Do I look like a painter?" she asked curiously. She'd never been asked that before. "Um... well... I have different hobbies..." They weren't exactly hobbies, just something that she occupied her time with. She leaned up from the telescope. "I like training... defensive training to be exact." She said biting her lip because most of the time people said that it wasn't a hobbit. "It relaxes me." That was a long story as to why.
Noelle bent back to the telescope, looking through it before he asked that question. "Anywhere? Does that include space?"

Declan did like sleep. It just so happened that sleep did not like him. He shrugged trying to brush it all off and appear casual. It was bothering him; however that it seemed like Noelle knew him a little better than he was comfortable with. Just how many secrets he thought he kept that the girl knew? Declan raised an inquisitive eyebrow as he glanced at her sidelong but did not dare to ask.
"Sometimes I think they do," he said calmly, wishing his hands to be still. They weren't as bad as Levi's hands, that was guaranteed. Declan's lips tugged into a crooked smile. "Like they're compelled? Do you know that feeling? How your parents would say look with your hands and touch with your eyes? Sometimes they want to disobey that even when I say it to them."
Declan had to laugh. He shook his head as he pocketed his hands. "Not really," he answered honestly walking around the room. "You don't seem like the type who stays still long enough for that. Unless it's the kind of painting that only requires throwing a bucket of paint on a wall-sized canvas." He turned to face her, hands in his pockets when she did speak up about one of her hobbies. Declan tilted his head, full of curiosity.
"Defensive training? Explain," he asked her but Noelle was quick to change the subject and although he was still curious he let it die down for now. There was no point in pushing people. Levi was one who didn't like it and Declan had learned the hard way. Declan hummed and looked up towards the ceiling of the room. "Sure. Anywhere. If you could go right this moment, where would you?" | |
