Default Potions Lesson 2

Thank you Stefan

The door to the Potions classroom is wide open, but Professor Newton isn't there.

The class is set out like it usually is, with the wall of pink and white lab coats, although there appears to be less pink ones and more white ones. The room is the perfect temperature, the dungeon chill removed.

Come in, get your stations organised and your lab coats on. Feel free to chat amongst yourselves. Lesson will start in approximately 20-24 hours.

SPOILER!!: Concentration Concoction
Concentration Concoction

Ingredients
  • 1 liter of water
  • Five Ginkgo Biloba leaves
  • Two Ginkgo Biloba seeds (soaked), ground to a paste
  • Two Tablespoons of boiling water
  • 1 tea light candle
  • 20 Hyssop leaves
  • 18 Peppermint leaves
  • 16 Basil leaves
  • 14 Rosemary leaves
  • 12 Citrus leaves
  • 10 Lavender leaves
  • 8 Lavender buds
  • Two squares of cheesecloth

Method:
  • Add water to cauldron, bring to a boil
  • Add two Ginkgo Biloba seeds to a small bowl, add two tablespoons of boiling water from the cauldron and leave for ten minutes to soften.
  • Slice the GB leaves into thin strips (approximately 2mm wide) with your knife and sprinkle into cauldron.
  • Grind in mortar and pestle until you create a paste, and add this to the cauldron.
  • Prepare the leaves/flowers
  • Add in the leaves and flowers one by one. Some might sink, others will remain floating. Leave for fifteen minutes.
  • In the meantime, light a tealight candle and put to eye height (to avoid straining neck and back), an arms width from the body (prop on books if needed)
  • Gaze at the candle flame until your eyes feel like they need to blink, then close your eyes. Concentrate on the image of the candle in your mind (the after image). Repeat for fifteen minutes.
  • Pour the wax from the candle into the cauldron.
  • Cast the incantation Mentis Apertus (men-tees ah-peh-rr-tus), whilst circling the want over the cauldron, perform three times.
  • Remove all leaves and flowers from the cauldron, adding them to the mortar and pestle. Grind them until they form a herby paste, and add it back to the cauldron.
  • Stir the potion 20 times, slowly, clockwise, with a wooden stirrer.
  • Remove it from the heat.
  • Layer two pieces of cheesecloth material over your strainer, to catch more of the solid ingredients. Strain the potion into your vials.
  • By the end, your potion should yield 500 milliliters. Divide this into 50-milliliter vials. Hand one up for marking and you may take the others.
Use: Increase the drinkers concentration, up to optimal. Best for times of exams.
Characteristics: Clear, some green sediment may remain
Level: Beginner - Intermediate
Information: Dose is 50ml, less than would have limited effect, overdose may cause the opposite effect.
The effect is mostly dependent on the concentration during the candle gazing.
This concoction will last one year.

Harvey listened to the Professor talk about the Concentration Concoction, already worried about what would happen next. Considering his track record with brewing potions... He'd read and read and read about potions, studied far more than for any other subject, but in practice he still just couldn't get it right. It was hopeless.

Oh, but what was this? Questions! Theory! He could do this!

"Trataka is a form of meditation, Professor," he answered. It involves staring at one point, like a candle, to calm the mind. Ive never tried it, but my sister did, and she went on about how good it was,"[/b] though Harvey had never quite understood what was so good about it, himself. "Since it's a meditation technique which focuses the mind on one thing, in this case the flame, it makes sense that it's somehow related to the potion which is also meant to focus the mind."

Finally. A good potions lesson.

Or, at least, the start of one.

Concentration potion.

Dal doodled a little flower in the corner of her page as she listened. She was never very vocal in potions lessons, they just didn't come easily to her. She was much better at wandwork.

Divination though... she was interested in. She didn't really believe in it, but she found it really interesting. Mostly as a way to just... organise thoughts. So this piqued her attention...

Ironically, this might be the one potions lesson she didn't need a concentration potion for. She raised her hand to say that she'd tried trataka - it was an evening of divination experiments back home with some friends, and had proved somewhat fruitless.

Might as well hazard a guess though, so she raised her hand. "So... do you have to focus on the potion or something? Y'know... concentrate." How else would it be related? Were they going to set their potions on fire and stare at them? Cause that did not seem safe.

A concentration potion? That was super interesting! She could certainly use that for her upcoming auditions.. and how good it worked was how good they concentrated?

Interesting.. Azura tapped her right hand on the deck, her promise ring glinting in the light as she listened to all of the Professor's questions.. she didn't know what the first thing he said was.. if she was honest.

But mediating would be helpful with potioning.

She raised her hand and then spoke. "Is it to clear our minds Professor? So that we are fully and only concentrating solely on our potion making? I feel for something like a concentration Concoction, we would need to be fully focused.. if we are feeling any other emotion, the potion might not turn out well. " she was a strong believer in emotions effecting the potion you made.

Just when the first year old was done with preparing everything for the lesson she thought she would need the professor entered the room and she nodded friendly at him as a greeting. She was determined to make a really good potion during this lesson and she wanted to prove that she could do it. So when the professor started talking she listened very carefully to not miss a thing.

Okay… Not difficult to brew, that sounded nice but the rest she wasn’t so sure about, what had that all to do with brewing a potion? Okay, that whole candle practice thing she could do, but what it had to do with making a actual potion? She had no idea! So she kept silent and just waited for a few of the older students or probably Ravenclaw students to answer the question.

"Not quite Miss Phillips," Art said with a smile.

"No, not exactly, but it does help a lot." It just wasn't why they were using the Trataka, Art replied to Mr Reed's first answer. His second one was a little more spot on. "In a way, yes. We use the trataka to determine the strength of the potion, but rather than based on how long we do it, it's based on how much we concentrate whilst we are doing it." He gave a happy nod to the young Ravenclaw.

Art chuckled at Miss Kettleburn's comment... and question. "Err it wo-won't... suck, but it might not be as err... as effective as a potion brewed from someone whose concentration is much stronger. However, if you find your concoction isn't very effective, you can take one that someone else has made and the effects will be just the same as they are on the person who made the potion." Which helped for people who couldn't concentrate enough to make a very effective potion for enhancing concenration.

"Buuut...I'm pretty sure I can concentrate on a candle more than I can stay concentrated on making a potion."
Art was very happy with this answer, and he nodded along with Mr Finch as he was giving his answer. "Yes, yes, the potion won't offer as much of an effect on enhancing concentration if the brewer can't concentrate as well during the trataka." Precisely! His next comment had Art nodding along. "That's excellent, and m-my daughter actually practices this daily and she says it helps her concentration at work. But the point is that when we're studying for something, at least I find that my err-my concentration is hard to focus. This potion is good for coming in and helping us out when we need it." He gave a big smile to the young Slytherin.

Art nodded at Miss Ness' comment. "That's certainly one of the points of the practice of Trataka, absolutely."

The next comment kept the smile on Art's face. He listened to the young Ravenclaw and nodded along. "Yes indeed it is, Mr Jarvis," Art said, as he continued to listen. He was glad that there was someone else who knew someone else who had tried it before. He wasn't entirely convinced for day-to-day life, but his daughter certainly was. And, he knew it made the world of difference to this potion. "Absolutely, absolutely, and we need that brief moment of concentration to really enhance the effects of the potion," he said whilst also gesturing with his hands as he spoke.

Art smiled at Miss Turay. "Well no, we focus on the candle. We try to clear our minds of all thoughts, and just focus on the candle. Concentrate on it, and keep it in our mind even when our eyes are closed. I don't really know what the reason behind it is, but," he gave a shrug, "Without this practice, the potion doesn't give the same effects of enhancing concentration."

"Yes, Miss Snow, indeed it is. But somehow, also, it's almost... almost putting our concentration into the candle, to then be used in the potion." That, he was sure, didn't make a whole lot of sense. Right now, anyway. "But what you are saying is correct, for this potion especially we need to be very focused, very present in the making of this one, and especially during the meditative activity, otherwise it won't turn out as well."

After waiting another moment to see if others would offer a suggestion, Art moved on. "Excellent suggestions everyone. Trataka is used, most often, as a medatative practice to enhance ones own concentration, increasing memory, awareness, attention and focus. All things that we need to be nice and strong when we are doing things requiring concentration, like studying for exams."

He turned his back and wrote the potion method onto the board, and turned back to the class.

Concentration Concoction

  • 1 liter of water

"So... so the trataka activity will take fifteen minutes only. If you can put all of your concentration into that candle gazing for fifteen minutes, then the effects of your potion will be as potent as possible. Which is what we want," really, wasn't it? "To make things a bit easier, I've labeled all the containers of ingredients. So I want you all to come up and get what you need and we will get started." Art himself set up his station, placing the cauldron over the bunsen burner, cleaning the cauldron, getting out his measuring equipment, wooden stirrer and mortar and pestle. He gathered his ingredients, lining them up on his clean table, ready for use.

++++++++++

"Right, first thing is to, of course, make sure the uhh... the equipment is clean." He had already done so, and he paused for a moment so that everyone else could do so, if they hadn't already. "We then measure one liter of water into our cauldron." Art used the tap water, preferring the muggle way, to fill up his container to the one liter mark, then poured it into the cauldron. "Now we want a nice flame to bring the potion to a boil. It's coing to be continuously boiling until we finish, too." So no fiddling with temperature today. He lit his bunsen burner with the flint, and adjusted it to its hottest flame.

SPOILER!!: Professor Newton brewing the potion continued here...

"Once you have some hot water there, I want you to add your two Ginkgo Biloba seeds to the mortar, and cover them with two tablespoons of the hot water. We're leaving this for ten minutes to soak, to make them a bit softer." He did so, carefully scooping out the two tablespoons of water from the cauldron.

"Now, I want us to set up our candles for gazing. You can sit on your chairs or stand, but just be careful that the candle is at eye height, and an arms distance away. There's spare books in the cupboards if you need extra height, too." His was already set up, and he waited for everyone to get ready. "If you light your candle now, it will be ready to go in a few moments..." Which would be doing soon.

"Next, we want to slice the Ginkgo Biloba leaves. Into thin strips." He cut one strip and held it out, roughly two millimeters wide. "The length doesn't matter, it's the width we want thin to increase surface area. More surface to soak through the leaves." He continued with the rest of his five leaves and sprinkled them into the cauldron. "Once ten minutes have gone past, we just grind the seeds into a paste. By now, even just ten minutes, they should be soft enough that it isn't too hard." Even for his old joints, it was relatively easy. He took his pestle and started to grind the seeds up, until he had a watery paste. "Now we carefully add this to the water, just avoid letting the water spit up at you."

He gathered the leaves and lavender flowers closer to him, remembering the order. "Now just add the leaves, one by one, starting at the top of the list and working down. If you have lots on your sprigs of leaves, just pick out the ones you think look best. Biggest, greenest, less eaten by bugs." He added the 20 Hyssop leaves, then 18 peppermint leaves, he plucked 16 of the best-looking basil leaves from his sprig, 14 of the best-looking rosemary leaves, 12 big citrus leaves, a mixture of different ones, 10 lavender leaves from the sprig, and 8 purple lavender buds. Once this was done he looked into his cauldron. It looked nice and full with greenery now.

"The leaves will stew in the boiling water for fifteen minutes, so just set your timers, and then we will get started with our candle gazing for those fifteen minutes whilst we wait." He turned to the candle of his and gazed at it. He lasted about 20 seconds before his eyes decided they needed to close, and he held them closed for a minute or so, keeping the imprint of the light in his mind, concentrating with all of his mind...

Once the timer went off, indicating 15 minutes had passed, he shifted his attention back to the class. "Hopefully you all managed to maintain your concentration." He smiled at the class, knowing 15 minutes to them might seem like a lot longer than it was to him. "We carefully pick up the little candle and pour the wax into the cauldron." Which he did.

"Now is a little spell. We do it three times. The incantation is Mentis Apertus. Men-tees ah-peh-rr-tus. And we circle the want over the cauldron." He did the spell three times slowly.

"If you haven't washed your mortar and pestle yet, do so now." He hadn't, so he cleaned it now. "Scoop out all traces of the leaves and buds, and add them to the mortar, and grind them into a nice paste." He found even the practice of grinding the mushy leaves into a paste quite relaxing, and in no time at all he had a nice green paste. "Add this to the cauldron, remember to be careful. And then stir it slowly 20 times CLOCKWISE with your wooden stirrer." He picked up his clean wooden stirrer, lowered it into the boiling water, and commenced his twenty, slow, clockwise stirs. Once the 20 was done, he removed the stirrer and put it to the side, for cleaning later. "Remove your cauldrons from the heat, and set up your strainer with two pieces of cheesecloth on top. You can strain it at the temperature it's at, but I'd prefer you wait a few minutes. Clean your stations and get your labels ready to let it cool down a bit. Then just bit by bit I want you to strain it into your vials. The dose is 50mL, so you can use the 50mL vials if you want. You'll get a few out of this because the potion should have evaporated by half." Art went about cleaning his things, going around to make sure everyone was okay, and collecting rogue things from the floor. Once he thought his potion was cool enough, he went and poured it into 10 vials of 50mL and put them into his potion cupboard behind him.

OOC: Very long post! (hence spoiler tags). You have until October 21st, approximately 11pm ACDT / 12:30pm GMT to get your potions completed. We will keep checking in and making posts. If you need help, give me a poke, or alert me in the subject bar so I can see it clearly. Have fun with it

"Katy! Pssst! Can you do my cauldron too? I have to put my hair in a braid!" For SAFETY reasons. Help a cousin out!
Katy just nodded and set to cleaning Char's cauldron, because honestly, just doing it RIGHT was so satisfying, y'know? She didn't bother to look up until she was finished, and it was really only THEN that she realized she was speaking to air.

So no blowing things up, 'cause there was no professor person.

She shoved the cauldron back at Char with a grin.

He came through the door and looked around to see all the faces. "H-hello everyone, sorry about the delay." He set the containers he was holding onto the bench, and lined them all up. "Today I thought we'd brew something to help with exams and your studies. It's my own little creation, and it's called the Concentration Concoction. There's lots of leaves and things in here, and whilst it's not a particularly difficult one to brew, the results are varied with the concentration of each brewer at the time of brewing it." This probably didn't make much sense at the moment. He took the lids off all the containers; Ginkgo Biloba leaves, Ginkgo Biloba seeds, tea light candles, Hyssop, Peppermint, Basil, Rosemary, Citrus and Lavender leaves, the lavender buds and squares of cheesecloth.

"Part of this potion requires some.. some uhh Trataka. Does anyone know what that is? Has anyone done it before?" It was a bit more of a divination practice than a potion practice, but it was a tried and true practice for the older man. PLUS, it made a very big difference to this potion of his.

Art set up by putting a stack of books on his desk, and placed a tea light candle on the top. "The candle is height with my eyes, and it's at about an arms distance," he said whilst holding an arm out in front of him. "It's very easy, and-and you just gaze into the candle until your eyes need to blink, then you hold your eyes closed and focus on the imprint of the light in your eye. Then when that starts to fade, you open your eyes and do it again." He gave a brief demonstration. "The point is to concentrate on the candle. That's what will help. Does anyone know why this practice, which really," he chuckled, "has nothing to do with potion making, would be part of this potion?"

OOC: There's three questions asked here. You can attempt an answer at any number, or even none if you don't want to. I'll post again in 12ish hours.
She blinked at the professor before waving a hand in the air. Just like... he knew he was crazy, right? So it wasn't like she had to point that out currently, and they could move on to things that were more important than his mental state. Like blowing stuff up.

"I suppose you could pollute the potion with your own thoughts, sir. Potions are conduits for magic, just like our wands are, so if your intent is muddy or unfocused, then you could seriously malign a concentration potion. So you go in concentrated, or at least with your brain UNmuddy, and it keeps you from polluting the potion up with all your wacky thoughts." She had plenty of those, mmk?

Since her cauldron was already clean, Katy was able to move on to the next step... water. Potions with non-water bases were super interesting, but at least she knew how to do this bit. Pointing her wand into measuring beaker, Katy murmured, "Aguamenti", and filled it to the 1 liter mark. Into the cauldron it went, and then Katy set the flame high enough to get the water boiling.

We need to do the what with who? Jonas worked better as someone else was doing it with him. The only problem was after the liter of water, the professor seemed to be a bit faster. He frowned amd poked a near by Slytherin's shoulder.
"Hey Katy....what do we do after the water?" he asked.

Default potion making.... :(
1 of 4 Amigos Don't underestimate me!

So... Here she was in her least favourite class... Least favourite because to her potions was boring and tedious and just took up too much time... everything having to be exact and just so wasn't her style either... Miranda had always struggled in this subject.. and to be honest she hadn't spent much time practicing her potion making either... Well, except a coupkle times with Nat or Brady, but still... Potions weren't her thing...

She did her best to listen to all of the instructions that were given and tried even harder to follow along in her potions book when Professor Newton was going over the Concentration Concoction's recipe... She looked around for a moment as everyone else began setting up all of their equipment.. and slowly began setting hers up as well...

So they were going to brew a concentration potion. That was quite cool to be honest. Maybe she could use it to help her focus more on classes and not about other things. She listened to the professor a bit long before getting up and collecting everything she needed. Going back to her seat she checked her notes and double checked her ingredients.

SPOILER!!: notes

Add water to cauldron, bring to a boil
Add two Ginkgo Biloba seeds to a small bowl, add two tablespoons of boiling water from the cauldron and leave for ten minutes to soften.
Slice the GB leaves into thin strips (approximately 2mm wide) with your knife and sprinkle into cauldron.
Grind in mortar and pestle until you create a paste, and add this to the cauldron.
Prepare the leaves/flowers
Add in the leaves and flowers one by one. Some might sink, others will remain floating. Leave for fifteen minutes.
In the meantime, light a tealight candle and put to eye height (to avoid straining neck and back), an arms width from the body (prop on books if needed)
Gaze at the candle flame until your eyes feel like they need to blink, then close your eyes. Concentrate on the image of the candle in your mind (the after image). Repeat for fifteen minutes.
Pour the wax from the candle into the cauldron.
Cast the incantation Mentis Apertus (men-tees ah-peh-rr-tus), whilst circling the want over the cauldron, perform three times.
Remove all leaves and flowers from the cauldron, adding them to the mortar and pestle. Grind them until they form a herby paste, and add it back to the cauldron.
Stir the potion 20 times, slowly, clockwise, with a wooden stirrer.
Remove it from the heat.
Layer two pieces of cheesecloth material over your strainer, to catch more of the solid ingredients. Strain the potion into your vials.
By the end, your potion should yield 500 milliliters. Divide this into 50-milliliter vials. Hand one up for marking and you may take the others.

Seeing that she had everything her wand pointed into her cauldron she cleaned it and then set it back down and flicked her wand to turn on the burner. The first step was to put water in the cauldron well that was easy enough. A quick Aguamenti and the water was coming out of her wand.

Filling the cauldron up to the needed spot she set it down to bring to a boil. Her brown eyes lifted to see Miranda looking off, "Come over here and work with me Miranda." She was working at a workstation alone so there was room.

Miranda was about to clean her cauldron when she saw that Natalia had called her over to work with her... ' Oh thank Merlin! ' she thought to herself. She could use all the help she could get and Nat was pretty good at potions.

She collected up her things and moved to her friend's table and smiled at the older girl... " Thanks... I'm so in over my head... " she admitted with a nervous laugh...

Miranda set everything up again and used her wand to clean her cauldron as Nat had hers.... " Scourgify.." And got all of the ingredients they'd need to brew this potion...

Still uneasy about making the potion she looked to her friend to guide her through it...

Alright, so it was time to work! The professor was done with his explanation and she was determinate to finish this potion and to do it right this time! Happy that she already had prepared everything beforehand she started to work.

She already was having her cauldron ready so all what she needed to do was fill it with the right amount of water. Looking up at the blackboard to see how much water she needed she filled her cauldron with one lither water, exactly like she needed to. Making a quick note that she had had done this part of the instruction she looked for what she needed to do next. “Hmm, Ginkgo Bilobas” she muttered to herself while taking the two ingredients and dropped them in the bow she had brought with her, it was a cute green bow with blue elephants on the side and she added two tablespoons over the seeds, also like she was supposed to do. Putting the table spoon down she took her rat Vlam out of her pocket and placed the small animal on the table. “Stay here if you want to watch but don’t get close to the cauldron or the ingredients” warned she her rat with a smile, knowing that she couldn’t keep her pet silent for long if she kept him in her pocket any longer than she already had.

Well this was going to be interesting, she had never meditated in the middle of brewing a potion before, but she was looking forward to it! Whatever would help with her potion brewing she was all for it!

Before she started though, Azura lined up all of her tools she would need, mortar and pestle, knives, wooden stirrers, measuring spoons and her strainer, and then said "Scourgify!" There! Now that everything was clean she placed her untensils where she needed them and then took her wand and her measuring cup.

"Aguamenti! " The water poured out of her wand and she watched as it filled up her measuring cup. She said "Finite. " When she had the amount of water she needed. She poured the water into the cauldron and then used Incendio to light the burner. She put the cauldron on and waited for it to boil.

While she did that she arranged her ingredients, the two seeds went into a small bowl, and then she started to slice up her ginko leaves. 2mm, yeah? She had a small measuring tape out as she sliced them...

By the time she was done with that, the water was boiling, Perfect! She measured out two tablespoons of boiling water and put it into the bowl with the seeds.. she placed a ten minute timer by it and started to work on the next step.

She sprinkled in her cut up ginko leaves and then started to work on getting her other leaves in order. She carefully started to pick the best looking leaves and counted them out carefully and set them into neat little piles for later..

A quick glance at the timer told her she had enough time to set up her candle befor she had to grind her ginko seeds..

The fact Professor Newton had been late to his own lesson hadn’t really bothered Brooklyn. At least he’d shown up, although she wouldn’t have worried otherwise. She could find plenty of potions to brew on her own so the class period wouldn’t be wasted, but she’d turned her attention to him as he’d begun the lesson, staying quiet as usual although filing the information way in her head. At least the trataka stuff, as the process for the potion itself was copied into her journal as usual. By now, she felt like the instruction to clean the cauldron and her tools were irrelevant. Even the first years should have known that by now.

Collecting her supplies, she had done exactly that once she’d returned to her seat. She Scourgified her cauldron, twice just to make sure it was clean. Using her wand to fill a measuring cup with water, she added that to her cauldron once it measured a liter, then pointed her wand underneath her cauldron and cast a silent Incendio to light a flame. Once that was done, she set about to prepare everything else.

Starting with the candle setup just so it was done, she did everything but light the candle before she placed two gingko seeds into a clean bowl and set it aside. Cleaning her knife, she took the gingko leaves and started slicing them into 2 millimeter wide strips, keeping her attention focused so as not to cut her finger. Besides, focus was important for any potion, but especially this one. She didn’t look up until she was finished, noticing the water was boiling and measuring out two tablespoons to add to her seed bowl. Now to wait for ten minutes, part of which she took up by sprinkling her cut up leaves into the cauldron. The rest of the time she checked her notes and made sure she hadn’t forgotten anything.

"Hey Katy....what do we do after the water?" he asked.
Katy was staring a little too hard at her flame when she heard a question from nearby. With a little guilty jump, she glanced over at Jonas and flashed a little smile. "Just do what I do, okay? I'm dead good at Potions."

She ought to be, considering her bloodline and all.

Katy dropped one, two ginkgo seeds into her freshly cleaned mortar and dashed a little of the hot water from her cauldron on top of them. "They soak for ten minutes, so maybe set your timer, if you have one." She happened to have a tiny hourglass, which she flipped over. Precision was their watchword, yup.

"And then we light our candle so we can stare at it." The weird hippie stuff, but she'd try it if it made the professor happy. Katy wasn't one for much pandering to make others happy, but even she understood that professors weren't exactly normal people. They were weird, special creatures who needed petting in all things.

But no staring at the candle yet. Instead, Katy laid her ginkgo leaves flat and carefully sliced them into tiny strips. The more surface area, the better, right? Each leaf was cut into tiny strips until all five were a pile of green toothpicks, and then the whole batch went into the cauldron. Just in time, too, because her timer was juuuuust... abooooout... up. Katy grabbed up her mortar and dug in the pestle to grind the seeds into ginkgo oatmeal.

"And then that goes into the water too, okay?"

Jonas listened intently and nodded. "Yeah. I think I got it. He said. Okay. He copied her as he added things and took things away.
Set it for ten minutes.
"The bloody hell is the purpose for staring at the candle?" Jonas muttered not really expecting an answer or anything. He continued the rest of the steps.
"Yeah. I think I got it." he said ans smiled slightly nodding a biy.

Oh! Hello Professor Newton!

Settling into her seat a little with her quill in hand and tip to parchment, Paige took a few deep breaths and repeated her mantra of 'today would be different,' among other silent pep talks, as the man began the lesson.

Concentration Concoction? Paige had to admit that THAT sounded like something useful given the extra coursework she was doing for preparation for university on top of NEWT students and the daily doses of homework. Pity that it also sounded like the sort of potion that the Ministry examiners would be checking for come NEWT time though - she could probably use the extra boost of concentration then given that her nerves would be all over the place. Especially if she received favorable results by owl come February.

As for trataka...Paige was actually quite familiar with it. She had actually needed to perform a variation of it during her Ministry evaluation a few summers ago, which had been incredibly difficult to achieve with Department of Mysteries employees looming over her and watching her every movement. It was also a technique that was suggested to her to practice every now and then to access her own inner eye...but the Hufflepuff was still to terrified to actually follow through with the instructions - even those encouraged by Professor Vance. So Paige elected to keep quiet for now and instead idly jotted down a few notes on her piece of parchment in attempt to make herself look busy and not...........flustered.

And was thankful when the ingredient went up on the board and she had other things to focus her attention - her concentration - on.

SPOILER!!: Parchment
Concentration Concoction
Will increase the brewer's concentration although the results will vary with the concentration of each brewer at the time of brewing it. This concoction has the shelf life of one year.

  • By the end, your potion should yield 500 milliliters. Divide this into 50-milliliter vials. Hand one up for marking and you may take the others.

Rising from her seat, Paige moved to collect her ingredients and paused in front of the professor for just a moment. "Um...professor?" she asked, chewing on the inside of her cheek for a moment before asking her question. "This potion...is it Ministry approved? For examinations I mean..." Since they had been brought up and all as being the opportune time for use. "...like NEWT examinations..."

With all her ingredients lined up at her station and candle set up in preparation for trataka, Paige pointed her wand inside her cauldron and cast the appropriate cleaning charms before pausing to summon the courage to conjure water. She HAD gotten a little better since start of term - and really should have learned to control her nerves more by now but old habits died hard it seemed - but she was just going to take another moment or two to focus herself. Wand thrust back into the cauldron, the Hufflepuff whispered the spell and THIS time managed a gentle spring of water to burst from her wand - hardly splashing over the rim of her cauldron. Lighting her burner was next...and now she just needed to wait for it to boil.

May as well get to doing some other prep work while she waited for that to happen.

There was the professor!

Cassie nodded a hello, accepting the fact that he was late if he said he was, wasn’t like she actually minded the ability to settle in before needing to focus. Which just so happened to be what today’s potion was for. Would you look at that. Listening to Newton speak on the potion as well as seeing what he opened, it wasn’t hard to get the point he was trying to give. More flora than fauna took place in the potion’s brewing.

As for Trataka, she was clueless as to what it was. And as such, hadn’t obviously done it before, whatever it was. Even with the demonstration they were given, Cass was trying to get all she was supposedly having to get from it.

Staring? Concentrating? Blinking?

Oh…meditation!

Um…okay. The needed to do the meditation to brew their potion. Interesting…and complicating. 15 minutes spent meditating in hopes of getting it all to mesh in as potent a potion as possible. Well, she’d just have to wait to see how it turned out when she got to that point. For now, the Ravenclaw was just going to start with what she knew as directed. Like her copying down the potions ingredients and steps into her notes for easy reference and getting up from her seat at her workstation to retrieve the needed materials. Once she was satisfied with what she had, the third year returned to her seat at set everything down before taking out her wand.

“Scourgify!” she cast to clean her cauldron. Then measuring out the water, she poured that into it and set it on the Bunsen burner and set the heat to get it to boil.

The seventh year began taking down the much needed notes that appeared on the board the moment she could. Her writing was quick yet still readable which was what mattered to her right now. If she could read it, understand it and correctly brew the potion then all was well. Setting her quill down and pushing her parchment to the edge of her desk, Hady rose to her feet making way for the front of the room. Collecting everything that was needed for this potion she returned to her workstation where it was all laid out exactly as should be.

Even though all her things were already cleaned earlier it didn't hurt to make sure as always. Taking out her wand 'Scourgify' was cast inside her cauldron. Using "Aguamenti" exactly one liter of water was added into the cauldron next. No more. No less. When the desired amount was added she canceled the charm. A quiet 'Incendio' brought a flame to life beneath the cauldron as well which Hady turned up to allow the water to come to a boil.

While waiting for the water to boil the two Ginkgo Biloba seeds were placed into the mortar. Once the water inside the cauldron was boiling two tablespoons were very carefully taken from it and added into the mortar covering the seeds inside. Slowly and steadily this was done so as not to spill and or burn herself with the hot water.

Setting the mortar with her soaking seeds aside it was time to set up the candle. It being a much larger candle then she was normally used to meant that she might be needing to stand come time to focus on it. Which was fine really. Fixing a spot on her table for it where it wouldn't get knocked over and that it was not only eye level and an arms length away. Perfect. Hady also went ahead and lit the candle now so it was ready when the time came.

Mischievous Niffler

Kitty stared into the candle as Professor Art instructed. At first it seemed easy but the whole not blinking thing started becoming annoying after a few moments. When at last she needed to blink, she closed her eyes and focused on the greenish purple splotch in the dark of her eyes. It grew and shrank, spiraling around in all sorts of crazy shapes until it last it vanished completely. Then she opened her eyes and repeated the process...

Looking up again at the blackboard to see what she needed to do next while making her potion she nodded to herself, this potion didn’t looked to be that difficult… She now only hoped that it really wasn’t difficult to actually make although she had so her second thought about the whole meditation thing… Taking the Ginkgo Biloba seeds out of her bow she started to work with them and she sliced them the way she was supposed to and up until now everything was still going according plan.

Taking the sliced Ginkgo Biloba seeds in her hand she sprinkled them into the cauldron, again like she was supposed to. Looking quick at the place where Vlam was sitting to see if her rat was still doing fine she smiled, her rat was behaving himself this time and she decided that if Vlam would keep behaving himself like that that she would give him a reward for it after the lesson.

Next she made a pasta and while doing so she wondered who had created this potion for the first time because… Well… Somebody must have thought about adding all those ingredients together and making a potion but… Whoever it was, that person must have had really a lot luck into creating a actual working potion or he or she had tried it reaaaaly a lot before succeeding. Taking the leaves out of her ingredient box she started preparing the leaves and while she was doing so she started to grin, this time she was really doing something good and she didn’t had ruined her potion like the last time! She only hoped that her luck wasn’t going to leave her so quick she crossed her fingers to ward herself against bad luck.

Now taking the flowers she looked at them and didn’t wanted to throw them into the potion, they looked cute! But, she needed to so she added them one by one into the cauldron, the first two kept floating while the others disappeared under the surface immediately. Looking at the blackboard again she sighed, so she needed to wait now, lucky for her she didn't needed to stand still and just... do nothing! There were still things for her to do in the meantime.

SPOILER!!: Notes

Now it was time to set up her candle! Azura took her tea light and looked around.. now she wasn't that tall so she didn't need many books to stack on top of each other. She carefully stacked her school books and put the tea light on them. Nice, Eye height!

She lit her candle with Incendio, just as her timer went off.

Perfect!

She put her ginko seeds in the mortar and took her pestle and started to grind it into a paste.. the Professor was right, it didn't take much at all. And after a minute of working at it she had a paste! Hooray!

She carefully tipped the paste into the cauldron, making sure it didn't splash up on her. She carefully cleaned her mortar and pestle before putting them away.

Now it was time for the leaves: First came her pile of 20 Hyssop leaves added one by one, next her 18 peppermint leaves, then her carefully picked 16 leaves of basil, 14 rosemary leaves, 12 lovely smelling citrus leaves, which Az paused for a moment to sniff..along with the 10 lavender leaves, she liked the smell of those too! And finally 8 purple lavender buds which sorta reminded her of the color of her eyes, if they were like four shades darker..

Anyways. Azura turned on her timer for 15 minutes and then turned to her candle.. time to focus more.

When the slytherin was in the class, he heard the Professor ask them to stare into the candle. Professor say what? He wanted them to focus their minds onto the flame? Did he not see this class? They all seemed like they had ADHD. Some of them could concentrate but it was easy for him. He was more about being calm. He shrugged and decided to stare into his candle which was kind of like a meditation thing. He heard the practice and it was called trataka? What was that like a disease. Where did these names come from? He rolled his eyes and went with it. He got his candle at arms length and lit it up with Incendio and stared at the candle. He felt kind of stupid that he was staring at light. Apparently he was supposed to have a image of the light in his eyelids. He cleared his mind and thought of nothing else. He concentrated and closed his eyes and he saw the imprint in his eyelids. He saw no stars but some candle light.

Once he felt that he was confident it the Trataka whatever the practice name was, he copied down the ingredients. Now Potions was alright for this slytherin. He thought of it more as cooking. He copied down the whole list which was quite a lot. He squinted through the steam and finally made it, he saw his first step.

His first step was to put in a liter of water and fill up his cauldron. He got his cauldron out and began to fill it. He poured his liter of water from his filled glass into the cauldron and he lit it up with, "Incendio!" and brought it to a boil. Then he began to prepare the Ginkgo seeds.

During the last few seconds of the ten minutes, Brooklyn had Scourgified her mortar and pestle, getting it ready to use once the time was up. Checking the clock and noticing ten minutes had finally passed, she transferred the soaked seeds to her mortar and began crushing. It didn’t take much before the seeds had become a paste, likely due to the soaking, and she quickly but carefully added it to her cauldron. At the moment she nearly felt like she was just making some sort of ginkgo tea, but then as she glanced at her notes, she saw that would change soon enough. Like, now, given she’d already gotten all the other leaves and buds sorted out and ready.

Starting with the hyssop leaves, she added them one by one into the cauldron, followed by the peppermint leaves, basil leaves, rosemary, citrus, and lastly the lavender leaves and buds. Once the last lavender bud was in the cauldron, she used her wand to light the tea light candle she’d already set up, and then set a timer she rarely used for fifteen minutes. She was guessing that checking the clock continually was going to interrupt the meditation, so the timer was needed. Now all that was left was to stare at the flame and stay focused.

Merlin, that was a lot of leaves. What exactly was the purpose of this foliage fest? Katy laid out her branches with a little frown, plucking and plucking and dropping and dropping until her cauldron was chock full of green. Like someone drowned a forest in her cauldron, only... it smelled super nice. She leaned in for a long, appreciative sniff.

Lovely.

Again, Katy set her tiny timer to count out the precise number of minutes. She turned her attention to the candle with some reluctance. It seemed so silly, but it wasn't like it was a step that could be skipped. So. Katy stared at the candle flame until her eyes started to burn. When she closed them, the shape and flicker of the fire stayed burning on the backside of her eyelids, and Katy traced the shape mentally over and over again.
