It's a chilly Winter morning, but not to worry! Professor Marchand has placed a strong heating charm on the classroom. Hopefully it'll keep the room warm enough that the students won't wish to use bluebell flames!
At the back of the classroom is a table bearing a plate of snowflake-shaped sugar cookies, pots of tea and hot cocoa, and enough paper plates and cups for all the students. Please help yourself to some refreshments while you wait for class to begin! The desks are arranged in two long lines along the left and right walls, while the middle of the room remains empty. Sitting on each desk is an empty plastic bottle. What's it for? Only time will tell...
As you walk in, you'll find Professor Marchand leaning against the wall at the front of the room, eagerly awaiting the arrival of his students.
OOC: Welcome to the first OOC Charms lesson! Please make sure you're familiar with Professor Marchand's class rules and all SS site rules. Class will be starting in about 24 hours CLASS HAS STARTED!.

The cold December air was chilling her straight to her core, it seemed. So it was definitely a relief to enter the room and get blasted in the face with the warmth! She may have even let out a small sigh of relief. Gryffindor house had it worst, she thought. Having to come all the way from their tower and all. COLD, DRAFTY CASTLE. Horrible. But the blonde shook herself from her thoughts and smiled kindly at the Professor. "Hello, Professor Marching Band!" Close enough, right? Right.
She thought so at least.
And there was food and hot drinks? SIGHS! Dora would love some cocoa, but she had a rule about not eating or drinking anything the teachers offered. GAAAAH! Her tummy even gave a slight rumble at the sight of the cookies. Oh well. She would just have to be sure and eat more than usual later on! Aaaand seeing as the classroom was empty still, she took her time choosing a seat. Not too far from the door... not allllll the way to the back... somewhere in between. Even if the center of the room was empty, she could be mid ways back against one wall. BAM.
CENTER OF ATTENTION! BOOM!
Ah, here comes the first student! Gaston smiled warmly at the Gryffindor girl, but his expression changed slightly as she spoke. Professor Marching Band?! He blinked dumbly. Well, that was s new one! He wasn't sure whether the girl was making fun of him or if she really had a hard time with his name, but he decided to give her the benefit of the doubt and laugh it off. "Hello to you too, Miss Umbridge," he said with a slight chuckle.

Next to arrive was Mr. Kovalainen. "Good morning, Mr. Kovalainen," Gaston replied, returning the boy's smile with one of his own.

Huh...in the front of the class is a plate of sugar cookies and tea and hot cocoa. Jonas then notices the professor leaning against the wall waiting for everyone to start pilling in.
"Hey professor Marand," Jonas said.
He loves how the professor is just leaning against the wall like 'yeah, I'm a professor with swag, what are you going to do about it? Jonas snickers a bit at his own mental statement. "Swag" he muttered as he got a cup of hot cocoa then sat at an available desk."Thanks." he said out loud almost forgetting to thank him in the first place.
And another student saying his name wrong! Wow, he never thought the students would have such a hard time pronouncing his last name! The thought corssed his mind to correct the young Slytherin, but he decided to let it slide. "Hello, Mr. Emery," Gaston said. "You're very welcome!" He thought he heard the boy mumble something about swag but decided not to ask him about it since he had no idea what that word meant.

She poured herself some tea and settled into a spot on the left side of the room, she cupped her hands around the tea cup to warm them as she waited for class to start.
Now here was an enthusiastic one! It warmed the Frenchman's heart to see such a positive attitude. "Why, hello, Miss Snow," he greeted the girl, beaming back at her. "I'm fine; thank you for asking. And yourself?"

The castle in general was bad, but at least heat rose. Therefore she and the rest of the Snakes had it worst. Therefore, heating charms, since she’d also rather not wear seven million layers and look ten times bigger than she really was. With the charms, she was fine with her sweater, thicker stockings and her robe, adding a cloak or a jacket if she was going outside. She wasn’t, so that meant they weren’t needed.
Walking into the classroom, she gave the professor a slight incline of her head along with a polite smile. “Good morning Professor Marchand,” she added, taking a single sugar cookie on her way to an open seat. A small snack wouldn’t hurt, after all, and at least it wasn’t chocolate.
In walked another Slytherin. "Good morning, Miss Andrews," Gaston said, smiling as he inclined his head toward the girl. He had to admire her politeness!

And another polite student! Now this was the kind of attitude Gaston liked to see! "And a good morning to you too, Mr. Winslow," he replied, nodding back at the Ravenclaw. That cough concerned him a bit though. Perhaps the boy was in need of the healer? "I hope you're not catching a cold!"

He'll toy with that in a bit, but first some tea and tasty treats!
Gaston had to stifle a laugh at the sight of Mr. Salander's many layers of clothing. Was his heating charm wearing off already? He hadn't cast it that long ago... "Good morning, Mr. Salander," he greeted the boy. "are you quite warm enough?"

Making a beeline towards the back of the classroom, he poured himself a cup of hot cocoa and grabbed a cookie that he let dangle from his mouth as he chose a seat. To the left, to the left? Hmmkay.
And an empty plastic bottle.
Huh.
Just a tad curious.
Somehow Gaston didn't think this student seemed as happy to be here as some of his classmates. Hopefully the boy's mood would improve soon! "Hello, Mr. Montezor," he said, offering the Hufflepuff a warm smile. Because smiles made everything better, right?

The Charms professor was slightly affronted when Mr. Krum walked right past him without saying anything, but he assumed he must just be having an off day or something. "Hello, Mr. Krum," he greeted the young Slytherin.

Walking into the room she took notice to the two rows of seats, one along each side wall of the room. Choosing an open seat without much fuss she made her way towards it only stopping to make herself a cup of tea and take a sugar cookie. Just one. With the hot cup in hand and the plate with her cookie in the other Hady headed for a desk. "Hello Professor, thank you for the morning snack," she greeted with a warm smile setting both the cup and plate on top of the desk before sitting down.
Her things were removed from her bag and set at the corner of her desk, bag being placed on the floor at her feet. While she waited for the lesson to begin she picked up the cup cradling it in her hands blowing gently on it before taking a small sip of the warm liquid.
The Head Girl's politeness was a refreshingly stark contrast to her younger housemate's attitude. "Hello, Miss Lynch," he replied, smiling back at her. "you're quite welcome!"

And here came one of the Ravenclaw prefects! Gaston couldn't help but notice her stammer, but he was too polite to say anything about it. "Good morning, Miss Valentine," he said, smiling warmly at the girl.

Hello, Gaston.
Olivia, of course, had been biding her time; gauging their new Charms' professor's temperament over the first few months of school. She was a total Gryffindor, yes, but she obviously wasn't a stupid one. There was no brave to the point of stupidity thing going on here. However, given that he'd been decidedly mild mannered and pleasant, the blonde felt she could finally act upon all the things his given name presented.
After class, though. Well, maybe during class... Eh, she'd play it by ear.
"Why, hello, Profesor Gaaaaaston." It was stated confidently (and rather dramatically) as she sashayed into the classroom. Confidence. She had it truckloads... and not even the chilly winter morning could dampen that.
Dropping her bag on a desk beside Ace, she went about grabbing cookies and tea. Extra, just in case...and then went to properly settle in. "Hey." Surely, her DADA buddy wouldn't mind her sitting with him.
The Charms professor blinked. Had the Gryffindor girl just called him by his first name? Well, there was always one, wasn't there? At least it wasn't that infernal song, though! Merlin, why did his mother think it was a good idea to name him Gaston?! "Hello, Miss Phillips," he said before gently correcting the girl. "And it's Professor Marchand."

But coming from the Lion's den to the Charms classroom was not on the high list of things Noelle wanted to do. She'd woken up early to get some homework done, because she ended up passing out the night before and not finishing it. So being by the warm fire, doing homework... was an infinity times better than running through the crisp winter wind. But... her homework was done.
Noelle had made it just in time for class too. She was delighted with the snacks that were present. She hadn't had time to eat so this was brilliant. She grabbed a snowflake shaped sugar cookie and a hot cocoa before making her way over to sit next to Azura. Oh yay! Hady wasn't too far over. She got a finger wiggle when her goodies were put on her desk.
Noelle looked around the classroom while nibbling her sugar cookie and waved at Owen and Dora who were present as well. When her cookie was done, she waved at the professor, smiling bright. "Those cookies were delicious! Thank you, Professor!" Not to mention the thanks for the warming charm. Nice and toasty!
Miss Summers got a quick look of shock, followed by a warm smile from the Charms professor when she complimented the cookies. "Hello, Miss Summers." he said. "You're very welcome; I'm glad you like them!"

What a great class!
When he was not so distracted by the food Olly actually looked up and looked around the classroom. "Hi Professor. Thanks for the cookies. Did you make them?" You always had to thank the chef. Even though technically he didn't know how good they were yet because he hadn't tried one, but he was sure they would be delicious. They were cookies after all. Olly turned and navigated his way toward a desk and sat himself down next to Noelle. "Hey." He grinned at her for a moment and then dug in to his plate of cookies.
"Hello, Mr. Thomas-Borzekowski," Gaston greeted the Slytherin. Wow, this boy's name was even longer than his own! He chuckled slightly when the boy asked if he baked the cookies himself. "You're welcome - and, no. Actually, I bought them." He couldnt bake to save his life! Baking meant fire, and fire mean... Just the thought of fire made him tug at his sleeve to hide the burn scar on his arm.

Matt loved hot chocolate, MAN. YAS.
Right, this was a lesson, though, so he needed to find a seat. Anywhere, really, Matt didn't MIND. Only not at the front because he didn't want to call THAT much attention in case he gave up doing what they were meant to be doing during the lesson.
Sooooooo somewhere in the middle of the room it was, aaaalmost at the back but not really. PERFECTTTTTT. Now he could just sit back, relaxxxxxxxxxx and sip on his hot chocolate as his mates arrived.
SLUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURPPPPP.
Another laugh from Gaston at Mr. Merriweather's enthisuastic reaction to the hot cocoa. "Good morning, Mr. Merriweather," he greeted the Gryffindor. "Glad you're enjoying the refreshments!" Although from the sound of that slurping, maybe he was enjoying them a little too much...

As he slurped, he noticed the teacher there. He nodded to him, "Sup Professor?" He felt his tongue burn and he felt his taste buds rise. Yup he wasn't gonna be able to taste for a week or so. Nice going Colt. You should have put milk in your cocoa.
He walked back to the class and sat down in his seat. He got out his notebook and began to do his famous doodles and waited for class to begin. He even munched on his cookie to give him an energy boost. He also wondered what charm the dude had in store.
Mr. Winchester recieved a nod, followed by a slightly confused look from the professor. Sup? Well, that was one greeting that he didn't hear very often. At least it was something original... "Hello, Mr. Winchester," Gaston replied. "Nothing much."

Well, this one certainly seemed glad to be here, though Gaston wasn't sure whether it was because of the warmth or the food, or both. At any rate, the Slytherin's attitude was contagious, and the professor beamed at him. "Hello, Mr. Finch. You're very welcome!"

If there was one thing Gaston Marchand was an expert at - well, aside from Charms, of course - it was at spotting emotional turmoil from a mile away. And this boy was rife with it! He immediately noticed the Hufflepuff's red eyes, and his heart went out to him. The thought crossed his mind to ask what was wrong, but he decided against it: he didn't want to embarrass him! "Good morning, Mr. Chev," he said, offering a sympathetic glance and an enncouaging smile.

Oddly enough that seat was close to two of her favorite Slytherins. She smiled at Colt first he was closer to her. Her smile was sly and flirty. "Hey, Colt." She winked. She gingerly placed her cookies and hot cocoa on the desk before turning to her other favorite Slytherin. She gave him a genuinely kind smile. "Hey, Oliver." He was such a sweetie and a good friend.
She then dug through her bag and pulled out everything she thought she would need for class that day, making sure to have everything in order, including the object that was on the table waiting for them. She vaguely wondered what it was for while munching on a cookie. Man these professors knew how to get to her heart.
Here was the Hufflepuff girl prefect, just in time! The professor was quick to return her smile and wave back at her as he said, "Hello, Miss Darcy. You're very welcome!"

Like the warming charms she noticed the minute she stepped through the threshold into the classroom, and the drinks she smelled as the third year moved further inside. Nice...very nice. Not really hungry, the Ravenclaw poured herself some tea and took it to an open seat in the long row present on the left side of the classroom.
“Good day, Professor,” she greeted the man as she sat down, setting the mug down before her before emptying her bag of what she needed for the lesson. One textbook…some parchment…quills and ink. “Thank you for the tea,” Cass added, as she settled in, taking a sip as she patiently waited for the class to begin.
It was almost time for class to start when Miss McNally arrived. "Good day to you too, Miss McNally," Gaston replied with a smile. "You're quite welcome!"
The Charms professor glanced at his watch. Time to start class! His eyes breifly wandered toward the hall. Was Miss McNally the last to arrive? He assumed so, as he didn't see any other students in the hall. He pointed his wand at the door, and it slammed shut.
"Good morning, class!" he said, moving a little closer to the center of the room so the students could see and hear him. He thought he'd take a moment to remind his students of the no fire rule, just in case. "Before we start, is everyone warm enough? If not, please let me know and I'll cast a stronger heating charm. Or you may cast it yourselves as you see fit, but please don't use any other spells to heat the room!" Like the bluebell flames, for example!
His eyes scanned the crowd, noticing the majority of his students had taken cookies and/or drinks. "You may continue enjoying your refreshments, but please do so quietly," he continued, casting a sidelong glance at Mr. Merriweather.
"Now..." He turned to the blackboard. "Who can tell me something about weather charms?" A flick of his wand, and the words Weather Charms appeared in big letters on the board as he spoke. He hoped the students weren't expecting a more dramatic start to the lesson! Over-the-top theatrics just weren't his style! "It can be anything... a fact about the charms themselves, an example of something that uses said spells, even a scenario in which you think a weather charm would be useful."
OOC: Class has officially started! Feel free to join in; just pretend you've been here the whole time! Late arrivals will lose house points. We'll be moving on in 20-24 hours.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
If he was ok?
Mason blinked up at the Professor. Of course he was ok, what kind of question was.... but then he remembered that he had disguised his laugh with a cough and the Ravenclaw nodded his head quickly. "Oh yes, i'm fine, sir" that meant he had not realised it right? Phew.
Anyways! Weather charms. Mason saw the words appear on the blackboard and he shot his hand in the air. "they're charms that changes the weather in a certain area, like you did in this room. I bet it was freezing before" he said. "The atmospheric charm is the best known but i personally like the snow flakes creating charm" just fyi.

Was he warm enough? Well he quite liked being bundled up-- its like a hug yknow? But from your clothes. He raised his mug of tea quite happily at the Professor's inquiry "Nice and toasty now Sir!" Plus actual toast. Yum!
Oh hey guess who decided to sit by him-- the other third of DADA's Rockin' Tootin Trio "Hey Liv! Tea?" Tea is good. Not quite the Gryffindor house blend, but good nonetheless.
Oh so they are gonna talk about weather charms? Well Scotland can REALLY use some nice warm sunshine right about now. "I think it’s a charm that’s been used in the Great Hall? Really like the effects when it snows-- but without the chill. Its just perfect."

FINALLY! A class that she felt confident in - even if her confidence was of the quiet sort and there was a good chance that the seventh year would still remain mostly silent during the lesson. Sitting comfortably in her seat after having opted not to take any refreshments (although a cookie had been tucked away into her bag for later). Although...tea was quite tempting...it was always hard to turn down tea.
The empty bottle did not go unnoticed either and already the Hufflepuff's mind was swirling with possibilities that naturally included a certain Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes product - a thought that was naturally sparked by the beginning of class and Professor Marchand's opening question.
"They can have an environmental impact," Paige answered upon raising her hand. "Meaning very real repercussions if performed inefficiently...but the opposite is also true. This is why the Committee on Experimental Charms conducts surveys and discusses their regulation from time to time."
As someone with a herbology interest and plants that required certain conditions...she had dabbled in these a fair few times yielding both results.

Hadleigh cast another smile at the Professor at his returned greeting. Sitting quietly at her desk she choose to sip her tea quietly for a few more moments only setting the cup down to wave at Kitty when she saw the younger girl wave to her. She would've said hello or something as well but the lesson was beginning now and her attention shifted back onto Professor Marchand.
If her mornings appearance didn't prove that she wasn't cold at all she wasn't sure what would. She was rather comfortable in the heated room and with her own heated charm cast upon herself earlier. Nibbling quietly on the snowflake sugar cookie Hady listened while the lesson started. Weather Charms. Alright she could work with that.
After swallowing the piece of cookie that had been in her mouth she raised her hand to give an answer. "Weather charms can also come in handy during a duel to slow someone down or change the area to suit your needs better giving you an advantage."

Ha. HAHAHAHAHA! Professor MARCHAND thought Mason was sick or something. Lovely. After waving back at Noelle and tossing a wink to ECho, Dora raised her hand. "Well a weat her charm would be useful in drought areas, yeah. " Like... MAKE IT RAIN, BRO!
The blonde then wondered if she could have some cocoa now that she had seen others had drank it and not like... been affected? Was it too late? COULD SHE HAVE SOME NOW? She caught herself staring toward the table longingly.

It was a bit disappointing that he hadn't made them himself. The cookies were good, but homemade were always better than store bought. (Well not always, it depended on who made them). It was always better when you could tell someone put thought and love into what they were baking. But he supposed he'd rather have good cookies bought from a store than not so great cookies made by someone who couldn't cook.
Olly had finished all but one of his cookies by the time class was actually starting. He left it on his plate, trying to pay attention and not just eating. Besides, he'd already had a few cookies so this one could wait until later. When the first question was asked he raised his hand because he actually knew something. "I know that to remove a weather charm the incantation is Meteolojinx Recanto." Honestly it was almost a miracle that he could remember that. But it was always good to know the counter-charm, in case something went wrong. "But I think Finite Incantatem would work too? It usually does."
Now here was an enthusiastic one! It warmed the Frenchman's heart to see such a positive attitude. "Why, hello, Miss Snow," he greeted the girl, beaming back at her. "I'm fine; thank you for asking. And yourself?"
Gaston had to stifle a laugh at the sight of Mr. Salander's many layers of clothing. Was his heating charm wearing off already? He hadn't cast it that long ago... "Good morning, Mr. Salander," he greeted the boy. "are you quite warm enough?"
Miss Summers got a quick look of shock, followed by a warm smile from the Charms professor when she complimented the cookies. "Hello, Miss Summers." he said. "You're very welcome; I'm glad you like them!"
Mr. Winchester recieved a nod, followed by a slightly confused look from the professor. Sup? Well, that was one greeting that he didn't hear very often. At least it was something original... "Hello, Mr. Winchester," Gaston replied. "Nothing much."
Gaston smiled at Miss Duchannes when she arrived. "Good morning, Miss Duchannes," he greeted her, nodding politely toward her.
And another student making a beeline for the refreshments. He knew putting out cookies would be a good idea! "Good day to you as well, Miss Toussaint," Gaston said, smiling warmly at the young Slytherin. "You are most welcome!"
Here was the Hufflepuff girl prefect, just in time! The professor was quick to return her smile and wave back at her as he said, "Hello, Miss Darcy. You're very welcome!"

Jonas thought about this....weather charms....weather charms. He silently blew on his hot chocolate watching as the drink made paterns in it....
"Would heating charms be an example?" he asked as he looked up from his mug as he raised his hand.
Snow Miser | Munchy | Molly Hooper | T | Hey, you | Phantom | Mrs. Chris Evans | Brat Pack | Tristalen
Ohhh weather charms!
Azura perked up a bit as she listened closely to the Professor before she raised her hand to answer the question. "I know an example of what uses weather charms.. there are several Weasley products that use charms like that, such as Weather in a Bottle and Weasley's Wet weather." She said with a nod as she put her hand down..
She didn't want to repeat what the rest of the class had said..
Puff by day, snake by night | Mj's bestie | Always UP to Something...
Weather Charms? That was actually kind of interesting and Nat sat up and pulled her parchment closer. She knew some stuff about weather charms, but not everything. Writing down a few things before putting up her hand. She put it back down when other's started to talk so she could write the notes down. It seemed many knew maybe more then she did in this class, which was fine, it was one of her catch up courses that she was still closing the gap with. Though she could do charms better then DADA.
"I think these charms would be very important to farmers and herbologist. They are the ones that need to keep control of the weather so that their plants can grow. If it is snowing and freezing then crops die, but if there is no rain the plant will die as well. So having control makes it impossible for the weather to harm the plants. "
Miranda sat and listened To Professor Marchand begin the lesson... So... today's leson was on weather charms......
oooh! This sounded extremely interesting. She had always wondered whether or not weather could be subject to magic as well.. Though she had also figured it was super hard and maybe even dangerous to mess with the weather.... Though helpful as it would be at times...
Up went her hand after a few minutes pondering the question posed by the teacher... " Professor.. Isn't it kind of dangerous to mess with something so vast as open air?... Randa had a question it she hoped that she wouldn't get into too much trouble for asking instead of answering...
There was hardly anything better in a lesson than to be able to just chiillllll and drink some hot chocolate. Yuuummmm. This professor was cool, Matt already liked him even if he were new.
The boy carried on sluuurrrpppiiiinnnngggggg his drink rather loudly - but not as loudly as before because fiinneee, professor, he would be quieter - as the man asked the first question and his classmates started to give their answers.
"Hm!!" Matt tried calling attention to himself right after he took another gulp of his beverage. He swallowed it and continued to wave his hand. Oh, Chewie said pretty much what he was going to say. "Yeah, I think that's it too." Or was it more like a spell that made it possible to control the weather in a room? Was that why it was nice and warm in there? "Or it's what you used to-" Oh, actually, no, that had been a heating charm he said earlier, wasn't it? "No, never mind!"
Oh well. Matt didn't know, really.

Just before class began, he spotted Echo and waved his cookie at her and mumbled a hello. He still didn't her too well but he liked her sass and that was good enough for him. And then Juno sat down next to him and he smiled even more. Today really was going to be a great day. "Helloooo, Junoooo" He felt like he rarely ever saw either of the two girls but they always had class together so clearly Oliver needed to pay more attention in his classes. Oops.
Okaaaay and time for class. And they'd be talking about weather? He could work with that...especially with how cold he'd been lately. Sooo a scenario when a weather charm would be useful.
Ollie's hand went up in the air and he said, "Well, since it's been so cold lately and it's kind of literally freezing in the dungeons, a weather charm would be useful to make things just a little warmer. Not, like, Spring warmer, but maybe a few degrees above freezing would be nice." He had meant to offer the scenario better but it ended up sounding like a suggestion on how to make his life better. Either way, he figured it worked. And now, back to eating his cookie.

Getting a wink from Dora almost made her chest explode, but how embarrassing would that be.. right in charms class too.
Trying to keep everything together she got distracted by Oliver, a younger Snake he seemed pretty cool.
"Psstt... Oli------ wanna pass me another one of these?" she asked quietly as she waved around the sugar cookie, she didnt want to get into trouble but her coco was lonely all by its self. See Dora she was eating alot of junk foods.
Time it participate in class Echo raised her hand "well if your a witch or wizard and you want to grow exotic foods but you live in London you can cast a charm in your greenhouse to make those plants grow? or to water them... ya know foods." anything for food, she looked over back to Oliver, was he going to pass her that cookie or what?

A salute in hello to you too, Dora.
And of course, Noelle.
All settled in now, Owen began nibbling on his cookie and sipping his cocoa as he waited for class to start...which didn't take too long. Using his wand, the badger cleaned his table except for the empty bottle and pulled out his quill and notebook. The cookie-cocoa combo made his mood much better, yep!
So their lesson today was about Weather Charms.
And he knew one important thing about them, since he was one to trifle with those charms during duels. Hand up! "Generally, these charms influence the weather in a certain area and one effective counter-charm to them is the Meteolojinx Recanto charm."
As Colt was on his doodle, he heard a hey colt and he turned around and noticed it was Juno. She winked at him. He threw her a quizzical look but then remember the halloween party he danced with her at. He nodded and did a smirk wave. He guessed Juno didn't forget too easily like he did clearly. He then looked at the front and noticed the Professor greeted him. He chuckled at his response and he guessed he wasn't used to the NYC way of greeting. He then heard his question about weather charms. He wanted to know what he knew about them. Did he learn about them in Durmstrang? Nahh he couldn't remember. Wait he remembered something.
"Professor I know I learned about the Ventus Jinx which shoots wind out of your wand or whatever.." he shrugged and continued to doodle.

See, Professor, if she knew about weather charms already, she wouldn't need to be here, right? Katy gave him a bemused look, chin propped up on her fists, and half listened to her classmates. Fine, fine, all good answers. Easy answers.
"Professor, is it like whether or not it's a charm or transfiguration spell?" Geddit? She was so so funny.

Looks like she had just made it in time as class began shortly after the professor returned her greeting. Cassie would blame it on all the stairs…yep…too many when coming down from the common room to retrieve something. Yet she had made it on time anyway so it was a moot point to dwell on, her attention switching to the topic revealed. Weather charms. Quite an interesting idea indeed and she knew of a few given what her father could get into. No one could deny that Gavin McNally loved his chosen field AND keeping his kids happy.
Some of what was already being mentioned by her classmates struck memory with Cass. The Ravenclaw was just trying to come up with something unique and not repetitive. “Weather charms can be used to bring the outdoors indoors which can help make something confining like a hospital or nursing home, more pleasing. “ Like for people who might not be able to go outside due to help concerns and the like.

Professor Marchand. Right. Olivia simply BEAMED at him, again, biding her time. Just you wait, Gaston. Your time was coming. It surely was.
However, right now, it was time to get her thinking cap going and actually participate. Charms, much like Herbology and DADA, was something she felt confident in. Simply because most of the dueling spells Liv felt comfortable performing were charms. So, one could imagine her immediate preference.
"They would probably be super helpful in Herbology. Not for plants that are kept indoors, mind, but the ones that are out in the garden." Maybe? Eh, she had Herbology on the brain, so her mind was a bit stuck on that concept.

Gaston nodded at the Ravenclaw boy's answer. Wow, a definition and examples! He was impressed! "Yes, that's exactly what a weather charm is. Excellent definition, Mr. Winslow! I don't think I could've put that better myself."

Oh so they are gonna talk about weather charms? Well Scotland can REALLY use some nice warm sunshine right about now. "I think it’s a charm that’s been used in the Great Hall? Really like the effects when it snows-- but without the chill. Its just perfect."
The Charms professor knew it was only a matter of time before one of the students brought up the Great Hall. "Quite right, Mr. Salander; the ceiling in the Great Hall is indeed bewitched with a weather charm to reflect the weather outside." He smiled as he added, "I like the snow too!"

Miss Skeeter was next to speak. Gaston blinked; had he missed her when she came in? It looked like he would've noticed the girl who saved his life! "Yes,weather charms can be either a blessing or a curse, depending upon the caster and circumstances," he said, "and there are many differing opinions within the wizarding community on how to handle them. Do the benefits outweight the risks? Should they be banned outright? Should only licensed practitioners be allowed to perform them? The Committee on Experimental Charms certainly has its work cut out trying to answer these and many other questions!" He'd personally dealt with the French Committee on Experimental Charms before and knew firsthand what a nightmare it was, but his class didn't need to know that, did they?

If her mornings appearance didn't prove that she wasn't cold at all she wasn't sure what would. She was rather comfortable in the heated room and with her own heated charm cast upon herself earlier. Nibbling quietly on the snowflake sugar cookie Hady listened while the lesson started. Weather Charms. Alright she could work with that.
After swallowing the piece of cookie that had been in her mouth she raised her hand to give an answer. "Weather charms can also come in handy during a duel to slow someone down or change the area to suit your needs better giving you an advantage."
Well, that was certainly thinking outside the box! Gaston, being a fairly inexperienced dueler himself, had never really thought about that, but now that he had, he realized the Head Girl was right. "A very astute answer, Miss Lynch!" he said, smiling back at the girl. "Five points to Slytherin."

The blonde then wondered if she could have some cocoa now that she had seen others had drank it and not like... been affected? Was it too late? COULD SHE HAVE SOME NOW? She caught herself staring toward the table longingly.
The Frenchman nodded. "Indeed it could," he said, "but the intensity of the charm and the environmental makeup of the area itself must also be taken into account. For example, if one were to cast a strong rain charm in the middle of the Sahara Desert, the results could be disastrous."
He happened to notice the Gryffindor hadn't taken any cookies or cocoa and was now staring at the refreshment table. Had she not noticed the snacks when she came in? Besides, he'd already had a few cookies so this one could wait until later. When the first question was asked he raised his hand because he actually knew something. "I know that to remove a weather charm the incantation is Meteolojinx Recanto." Honestly it was almost a miracle that he could remember that. But it was always good to know the counter-charm, in case something went wrong. "But I think Finite Incantatem would work too? It usually does."

"Too right you are, Mr. Thomas-Borzekowski and Mr. Montezor, but we'll come back to that a bit later," he said before turning to the Slytherin. "That's a very good question! Generally, yes, you could use Finite Incantatem for simple weather charms, but the stronger, more complex spells or the ones designed to cover a large area would require a more specialized approach to remove."

Three girls had given very similar answers, so the Charms professor decided to address them all at once. "Very good, ladies! Creating ideal conditions for plants is in fact the most common use for weather charms." It was a shame the International Statute of Secrecy forbid the wizarding community from using weather charms to help the muggles with farming... then they could solve the world hunger problem! But that didn't matter. Gaston's job was to teach spells, not engage in pollitics!

"As I said before, the level of danger depends on many factors, such as the intensity and complexity of the spell, the skill level of the caster, and the size and existing climate of the target area. So, yes, it can be dangerous, but for today's activity, we'll only be using a couple of very simple weather spells so there shouldn't be any accidents." "Mr. Merriweather, please stop slurping," he said. "If I have to ask again, there will be consequences." Not, like, Spring warmer, but maybe a few degrees above freezing would be nice." He had meant to offer the scenario better but it ended up sounding like a suggestion on how to make his life better. Either way, he figured it worked. And now, back to eating his cookie.

Gaston nodded. "Excellent examples, gentlemen! The heating charm and Ventus Jinx - though to a slightly lesser degree - are indeed examples of weather charms." At least he assumed the heating charm was what Mr. Finch was referring to when he mentioned making it warmer in the dungeons. He seemed to recall Mr. Winslow also mentioning the heating charm earlier as well...

Now this was the most original answer Gaston had heard yet! "A very intersting answer, Miss Mcnally!" he said, beaming at the Ravenclaw girl. "Five points to Ravenclaw for such a creative and kind use of weather charms!" He felt a bit guilty for giving every house but Gryffindor extra points, but there was still plenty of time for the Lions to earn points...
The professor waited a minute longer to see if anyone else would answer before moving on. "Now then, today you'll be learning two simple weather charms, as well as the countercurse that Mr. Thomas Borzekowski and Mr. Montezor mentioned earlier. I know it's a lot to learn in not a lot of time, so if I'm going too fast for you, just let me know and I'll gladly repeat it for you."
"The first spell we're going to do is a sunlight charm," he continued, looking around the room to gauge the students' reactions. This was probably going to be a very popular spell on a day like this! "The incantation is Solis Lucidum." He said the words slowly and clearly before waving his wand in a circle that looked like a sun high in the sky. "Solis Lucidem!" he repeated, aiming his wand into the air, and warm bright sunlight shone over the students' desks.
Was everybody following him so far? Okay, good. Moving on... "And the countercurse: Meteolojinx Recanto." Merlin's beard, that spell was a mouthful! He decided to give the students a few moments for the pronunciation of the long words to sink in before going on. "There is no elaborate wand movement for this spell; just point and..." He repeated the incantation, aiming his wand at the beam of sunlight, and it immediately vanished. "As Mr. Thomas-Borzekowski pointed out, you may also use finite incantatem if you wish, but just in case, I would recommend using the countercurse designed specifically for weather charms instead."
"Now, for the next few minutes, I'd like you to practice these two spells," Gaston instructed the class. "Please move to the middle of the room and spread out as far as you can. Two or more spells performed in too close proximity to each other could combine or counteract each other, and we don't want any accidents!"
OOC: So sorry for the delay! I've been having problems with my internet connection. Anyway, you have AT LEAST 20 HOURS to practice. Gaston and I will be popping back in periodically, so if you have questions, feel free to ask!

The Slytherin hadn't expected to get points for her answer at all. It had just been the first thing that came to mind being a dueler. "Thank you, professor," she replied with a warm pleased smile. It appeared she wasn't the only one gaining house points this lesson either. Nice thinking to those asking questions as well.
Finishing her cookie she wiped her hands on her napkin and set it beneath the plate which she pushed to the edge of her desk. After taking a few small sips of her still very warm tea Hady picked up her quill and pulled her sheet of parchment closer to herself taking down all the necessary notes. It was already obvious they would be working on weather charms this lesson but which ones she wasn't sure of until she heard Professor Marchand speak about the sunlight charm. This was certainly a good one for cold snowy days or rainy ones too.
Setting down her quill Hady quietly repeated the incantations to herself. First working with 'Solis Lucidum' which was said a few times. Then 'Meteolojinx Recanto' this one being said a few extra times being as it was a bit stranger on the tongue. When she was sure she had both down well enough though the girl rose to her feet pulling her wand from it's holster.
Moving to the center area of the room that was clear of anyone so no one was to close she raised her wand and preformed the circular motion like the sun, "Solis Lucidum!" Straight ahead of her a few feet and up towards the ceiling was a bright sun shining bright enough to make her eyes hurt. Blinking a few times she quickly pointed her wand at the shining sun she had just created and cast the counter charm "Meteolojinx Recanto!"
It hadn't been that tough but she was a second year and pretty good with charms. These were cool and useful thought. Hady looked around to see if anyone needed help with it.

But... wait a moment. She hadn't mentioned a desert. Dora blinked at the man as he spoke and nodded slowly. He had kind of missed the point, hadn't he? Deserts had plants and animals that had long ago adapted to the surroundings... she had meant more along the lines of a farm... in a drought. The plants needed waterung, right? Make it rain! But whatever, this professor was currently threatening to take points from a guy slurping, clearly he wasn't the brightest crayon in the box.
With a small roll of the eyes, the Gryffindor got up and moved to the center of the room as instructed. She practiced the incantation first, "Solis Lucidum, Solis Lucidum, Solis Lucidum. "
Alright so that was pretty easy. Get out of your seats, blah blah circle wand movement. Any questions? Eh. Just one.
"How would weather charms work anyways?" Jonas asked. "I mean, you cant just create something out of nothing."

One of these days she was going to get points in class..One of these days! Azura felt slightly frustrated at her answer.. such a dumb one.. where was her Ravenclaw when she needed it?
Speaking of.. where was Jace? And Jasper? She was missing her best friends.
She bit her lip as she heard the Professor talk about the charms they would be learning today and she smiled. She was always excited to learn new magic. It's why she enjoyed Charms so much.
She got up from her desk and stared to work on the sunlight charm, first she carefully sounded the spell out in her head Solis Lucidum she thought as she moved to an empty spot.
She then practiced the wand movement.. she held her wand up in the air and made the wand movement while saying the incantion in her head Solis Lucidum.
......
For a moment it seemed like it had gotten bright over her head for a moment.. she had felt brief warmth.. but now there was nothing.. she couldn't have made that work without saying anything..
Right?
Right!
"Solis Lucidum! " She said as she made the wand movement and there! Sunshine!
Oliver had been listening to people so intently that Echo's pssting actually scared him and made him jump. Turning to her, he blinked a few times, trying to process what she was saying. Another one of... He glanced at the cookie and realized what she wanted. And smart girl she was too because he was really craving another. "don'tscaremenexttime." Ollie then watched the professor who was listening to the other students and sloooowly reached over and grabbed a few cookies for the two of them. "I got you two for good measure." He placed hers on her napkin and began munching on his own.

And noooow on to Charms! And this one actually sounded like a cool one. I mean, they were basically charming the sun to be RIGHT THERE...except a less fatal kind of sun. Ollie put down his cookie and wrote down the professor's instructions and then pulled his wand out. There's no way he'd have problems with this one. After all, he was nearly in his last year, and he was of age now. This would be easy.
First, he practiced saying the incantation because there had been several instances when he thought he was good enough to do it on the first try and then completely messed it up. None of that anymore. He was going to make his life easier. "So-lis Luc-i-dum. Solis Lucidum. Solis Lucidum." Well...that was easy.
Lifting his wand into the air, he moved it into a circle, just as the professor had, and said, "Solis Lucidum." And then there it was! Sunlight shining down on him. This was so cool. Some days, magic didn't impress him much but this charm, he loved. Oliver basked in the sunlight for a little while and then looked down at his notes for the countercurse.
And this one was kind of hard to say. "Metolojinx? Met..e...o...lojinx...." Sometimes, Ollie wished Hogwarts had a class that helped students learn how to pronounce some of these words. He just decided he would wing it.
He pointed his wand at the sunlight and said the incantation. "Meteolojinx Recanto!" And then...it was gone. The classroom became a lot gloomier without it.
