Slytherin Notice Board

http://i820.photobucket.com/albums/z...oticeBoard.png

In the corner of the Slytherin Common Room stands a tall cork bulletin board. Any parchment that touched the cork is magically affixed on it by the self sticking charm it posesses. Here is where you may post class announcements, homework or anything else you think the great house of Salazar Slytherin would do well knowing. And remember...

We're Slytherin, told it's a sin
A House no-one worthwhile's in.
What dung, what rot, what utter tripe
A rather silly stereotype.

Slytherin's for those with brains--
Yet not ashamed to work for gain
Slytherin's for those quite brave
But not to the point of an early grave.

One learns quick and well in Slytherin
How to thrive and how to win.
We're clever, ambitious and maybe mean--
But hey, we get to dress in green.

Cross us and get curse-whacked
A snake never gets side-tracked
We're Slytherin, it's all the rage
Don't stick us in your 'good kid' cage.

You'll think of us as model tykes
But prone to lies, and quick to bite
Let everyone else mutter and glare
We're Slytherins, so we don't care.

Now let's be frank; Slytherin rules
We're the rebel house, the house of cool
Trust only those who are already in,
Too bad all houses aren't Slytherin.

'Create Your Own Potion' Workshop!

You've read it right: I, Professor Culloden, will hold a year-long potions workshop where you, students, will be able to create your own potions. We will work together. I have to warn you all, though: YOU will be doing the work, I will only watch over you. If you are interested in, owl me your name, year and the potion you want to create. You have until 15 November 2084 to do so.

OOC: That's right, guys! I'll be holding a workshop for your characters to create whichever potion they want (except outrageous potions, of course). Lists always make it easier, so here're the things I want to say:
  • I won't award points. However, I will add your potion in the 'Potions Recipe Book' with credit to you. If you don't want that but still want to participate, that's also fine. Basically, this is up to you. :)
  • We'll hold the scenes in either potions lab or I'll create a new thread (depending on how many people sign up).
  • I'm planning to have a new step every 2 weeks, but don't worry: It'll be really simple! I have a RL too, so it won't take too much of our SS time, promise! :)
  • You can drop out anytime if you want and/or go at your own speed, but it'll be nice if you aren't behind more than two steps.
  • Please PM me the potion you want to create and exactly what you want it to do, along with your character's name and year.
  • Please pick only one potion.
  • The OOC deadline to sign up is January 21, 23.59 EST.
You can PM/DM/IM me any questions you have.

PS. For now, you only need to PM me what I've wanted ^^ I'll tell the next step in the session, but generally, you'll find the ingredients and we'll discuss the steps later. :)

I hope we'll have fun with this! :x3:

Charms Homework I

Get in a little more practice with the spell you were taught during the lesson in the Charms Annexe. There are various items in the chest located in the room that would be appropriate for testing the spell on. Don't break anything you don't plan to fix, don't blow things up.

Extra Credit: A short essay on respect (one paragraph, 4 sentences minimum)

Due: January 24, 2015 @ midnight GMT -5

OOC: You will need 5 posts to be considered for full credit with this homework assignment.

sweetpinkpixie 01-17-2015 07:02 AM

http://i969.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps98a2f060.png

There are two options for this homework. Please only complete ONE of them for credit. Doing more will not earn you double the house points. Extra credit is available to outstanding efforts and creativity.

option one (worth 10 pts)
Using your textbook, answer the following:
  1. Define the term “equinox” using your own words.
  2. Define the term “solstice” using your own words.
  3. Define the term “cross-quarter day” using your own words and how does it related to Halloween?
  4. What is “Samhain” and how does it relate to astronomy?
  5. What are the seven October constellations?
OOC: This is a straight forward question and answer option. Please please PLEASE use your own words and do not just copy paste from Wikipedia or another site <3
option two (worth 10 pts)
Select one of the constellations discussed in class and design a Halloween costumed based on it.
OOC: This is a graphics inclined option. You may hand draw, Photoshop manip, or Polyvore to create your costume.
RP EXTRA CREDIT (worth 5 points)
Come enjoy the Halloween party in the Spirit Room:shifty: You'll receive further instructions upon arrival. You are encouraged to come in costume - it IS Halloween after all. Bonus points if you come wearing your designed costume or any astronomy related costume ;)

OOC: this is an optional RP assignment. Please keep in mind that the thread may remain open longer than the homework deadline listed below. Please PM me the links to your posts when you submit. Please visit the link above for further instructions on how to earn extra credit.

this assignment is due January 24th @ midnight PST

Please be sure you have read through Astronomy & Space Navigation and paid particular attention to the rules regarding homework submission. Late homework submissions will not be accepted. Any questions, concerns, or what have you can be sent to me via PM. You do NOT have to have participated in the lesson to do this homework.

History of Magic Homework One

Hogwarts Founders and their Houses

In class we discussed how one of the ways the founders of Hogwarts tried to compromise their views was to have their own individual houses. If they had agreed in the first place, would there still have been houses or would there have been another method to group or separate students? In class you were to choose either a Hogwarts without the house system or imagine another secret founder who created a fifth house.

For homework, either write a summary of your class activity (2 paragraphs of 5 sentences each) or creatively present your ideas to an audience (2 RP posts).

Due: February 17, 11:59 pm EST

Worth: 10 points

OOC - If you were unable to participate in the activity portion of class, you can still complete the homework. Simply choose one of the stances listed above for your homework and follow the above instructions. If you were not in class at all, please refer to the class progression posts in the first post of History of Magic Lesson 1 to better understand the class discussion.

If you think you know ALL of them, then select the five at which you are the least adept. I want you to practice EACH of the five in the dueling arena. You may practice with a partner, which will earn you more points, or you may practice on a dummy. Record your duels in the arena log over the next two weeks. When we meet again, I will expect to see progress from you all. The goal of this homework practice is to turn your weaknesses into strengths, or to at least improve them so that you are able to defend yourself against any kind of threat."

To put that in simpler OOC terms...
  1. Select five spells from the list (below) for your character to practice.

    SPOILER!!: List of Spells
Spells to Practice - Who Taught It? & Airey's Reactions.

  2. Find a partner. OR, decide to work alone.
  3. Go to the dueling arena. Duel with a partner (OR a dummy).
  4. You should each have at least 5 posts (one spell per post) to receive full credit. So a full duel with two partners would last for 10 posts; practice on a dummy should take 5 posts.
  5. Record your duel here. Follow Rose's instructions in the first/sticky post of the thread.
  6. You have two and a half weeks to complete this task. I will close the arena log thread on March 20, 2015 at 11:59 EST.
  7. So, you do NOT need to PM anything to anyone on staff (unless you have questions). In that case, we're happy to help! ^_^

♠ Write one long paragraph about different types of dangerous plants, where we could find them, and how we can protect ourselves against them.

Homework is due Saturday, 28th March 23.59pm (GMT)

OOC: I am SO sorry this has been posted so late. I genuinely forgot to do it. *smacks self* I'll give just under a week until the deadline, as it's only a small task. Please PM homework to me. Read here to refresh yourself with how to submit homework.

Do you think this potion is used for beautification or health purposes? Whichever you choose, design your own potion of that type. If you think it can be used for both reasons, pick the option that you think the potion is used for most often.

Your designs should be unique (i.e. not already named by JK Rowling) and include:
  • Name of your potion
  • Briefly describe what it does
  • 2 ingredients that you think it should have

Due: March 28, 23.59 GMT/19.59 EST+1
Worth: 10 points (+5 extra available for outstanding effort)
