As you near the Arithmancy classroom, you may feel the air begin to chill slightly. But don't worry, there are no dementors around. Upon entering the room you will instantly see the cause: true to form, Professor Tanner has opened the windows to allow in a crisp autumn breeze. Streaks of sunlight cross the room and fall upon freshly dusted desks, the chalkboard, and a small table with brightly colored pieces of paper. You should probably read the inscription on the board first, yes?

OOC: This lesson is being held at 9am on October 15, 2085; it is not the first lesson of the year. We will officially begin in around 24 hours. Until then, feel free to chat, just try not to set the place on fire. Class has begun; please don't announce your late arrival.

And finally

"9 right Professor? Did I reduce those right?"
Margo now realized she only had done half the work, but there, now she was probably right.
"You're welcome," she responded. And after a few moments, the girl had finished up. "Yes you did. Well done, Miss Holiday."

Yeah. Right. Paying attention. Notes had been made about the topic of the name change issue and if it changed things when it came to their calculations based on Arithmancy. Kudos to Tobias for thinking of that because he certainly wouldn't have. The sixteen year old hadn't had anything to add or comment on -- surprising, wasn't it? -- so he stayed quiet.
Seeing as he was a Slytherin and FINALLY getting started, Grayson scribbled down the name 'Ginevra Molly Potter' before flipping his textbook open to the correct page. Trying to do this without using the textbook was HARD, man, and he wasn't up for putting his brain through that kinda headache. Besides, there wasn't much time left.

Done? Done. Imaginary pats on the shoulder for YOU, Whitlock.
Okay, time to check on Whitlock. He'd managed to fly under the radar so far. "Yes... yes.. Correct, Mr. Whitlock."

Now there was the adding up and breaking down of the numbers in each group until he had it all laid out. He'd have to be careful of those master numbers too since sometimes he caught himself and didn't go lower and sometimes he slipped up and forgot. Ugg, they were running out of time as the Professor spoke up mentioning they only had a few more minutes, Benny did his best to finish up, hoping he had them all right. Her middle name was certainly the easiest.
Now she cam to Benjamin's work. "First of all, Mr. Atreyu, her middle name was Jean, not Jane." Minor detail, however, as it did not affect the calculation. "However, your arithmetic went awry for the surname. Take another look, please."

Tiara was confused. She knew that all the other Slytherins had been getting '4' as their answers, but when she went through the girl's work, she couldn't find an err-- "Ah, I see what happened. You mistakenly calculated using the surname 'Weasley' when the Slytherins were supposed to use 'Potter.' But for the name you used the work is all correct. Maybe best to double check next time," she finished with a wink.

But...13 was one of those karma numbers. Did he reduce? UGH. He raised his hand. "Professor?" he asked. He normally NEVER asked questions in this class, but with OWLs coming up...he needed to. And he hated it. "I got one of those karma number things. Do I reduce that?" he asked.
She was pleased to hear an intelligent question from a few rows away. "A worthy query, Mister Newell," she said, striding towards him. "If you look in your textbook, you will notice there is no interpretation for 13; so yes, go ahead and reduce it down to four." She nodded to affirm her answer. "However, the meaning for 13 as a karmic number can be used to inform your interpretation, sort of shade the answer, if you will."

Tiara still remembered the unfortunate encounter she'd had with Miss Wayne at the beginning of the term. Team GryffinPuff. Okay, well that could work. Though he would have much preferred to be put in a group with Ravenclaws because they seemed to know what they were doing 100% of the time. But Hufflepuff would mean that they'd get to work with Sophie's Toberoni guy and he was real smart too. So either way, they'd be set. Maybe.
Anyways, standing up from his desk, he looked around the room in hopes of gathering a small army of 2-5 maybe? Please...? "Anyone wanna team up?" Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs preferably because uh, instructions and all that. Though, he did wish he could work with the snake next to him. Maybe next time, cool Grayson. Siiiigh.

On the contrary? Really? ... He'd actually never thought of it that way. He had just figured he'd gotten them wrong, so he should have gotten them right straight off the bat...
He liked the sound of this though. "Yeah, yeah, I suppose so," he murmured, nodding. This was definitely a philosophy he could get behind. Wait, was it a 'philosophy'??? He'd have to find out.

Letting out a small sigh she glanced around to see which of her housemates and or Ravenclaws she could work with. Wouldn't it just be easier to work with whom they were sitting near? So his calculations had been right. And they would be working in groups... Hufflepuffs and Gryffindors. Adi shot another look in AJ's direction. He would love to work with her just as they did so often but he figured she would turn him down again. Besides, she just avoided his eye contact. Clearly she was still mad at him.
Sighing, Adi turned to Zander and Zeke. "I'll work with you two if you don't mind.''
Kace was shocked that he did well on his activity. He didn't expect to get it right but he did follow the books steps. He smiled and then he heard the Professor mention they were gonna work in groups. The lions and puffs together and then the snakes and claws. They needed to discuss things using the textbook. Huh...should be easy enough.
He walked around and looked around to join a group and noticed Zander, Zeke, and Adi were a group and why not join them. "Hey guys do u mind if I join you?" he asked.

Kate looked up at the sound of the professor's voice. She read through the list of numbers, searching for the name the Ravenclaw's had had to calculate. There it was, and it was a nine! Ha! First calculation, and she got it right! Well, with Gabe's assistance, but still, here she was thinking she'd do an awful job at Arithmancy, and that first calculation had given her hope.
Okay, so partner time. This was something Kate wasn't nervous about, because she wasn't shy to ask somebody to work with her. She needed a Slytherin... Hmm. Looking around the room, she saw a girl about her age and decided to see if she had a partner or group yet. "Hey, I'm Kate," she said. "Would you like to be partners?" It was obvious by her uniform that Kate was a Ravenclaw, so she didn't state that obvious fact.

Dante is still had now idea what he was doing with two full names of famous people. Who were now dead by the way. Captain Obvious. He had zoned out after writing his full name on the parchment. Parkour was much more interesting to think about. Putting values to the names and adding, subtracting, doing stuff. Doing stuff seemed like the best answer.

Well okay. Cool. Though the partners thing was not cool. What if they wanted to work alone. And dividing by house was clever but weird to Dante. Why could they just pick any partner they wanted.
Whatever.
Discuss the different number in his book. Which he had, of course. Okay, Partner...Ravenclaw Partner...Was Dima walking over to him? Well seems like his partner search was over real quick. He will roll with it. Easier for him that way. Partners in Crime. Expect no crime and only discussing this woman.
"Dima!"
Sup, Bromigo. If he was standing up. A bro hug would have go down. It was a fact. Like fedoras were awesome.
"You ready to talk about this woman?"

Hufflepuffs and Gryffindors. Toby could absolutely do that. He could team up with people from any house, as he loved them all. The seventeen year old quickly jotted down the notes from the board before looking around the room at people who were already grouping off.
The Gryffindor prefect caught his eye. Puck, of course. They'd spoken a few times before now and were on good enough terms that teaming with her made sense.
"I'll work with you, Puck," Toby called over to her with a little smile, raising his hand slightly to draw attention to himself in case his voice hadn't been enough. "If that's alright with you?" Either way, Tobias was gathering up his textbook and parchment ready to join her, or someone else if necessary.
Puck glanced over to Toby when he said he’d work with her, of course it was alright…besides he was the head nerd wasn’t he? “of course its alright Toby,” she smiled over to the older student. She made some room for him at the desks and jotted down the numbers herself.
So…she was going off of how Hermione was before she got married then? Did people really change that much after marriage? She wasn’t sure but if that was the case she didn’t really want to get married ever then…not that she had ever really wanted to.

“Anyone want to group up?” She’d even change her house for the day if that was necessary.

It was nice to know that she had done the calculations correctly. Lux really felt that she was getting better with Arithmancy the more she studied it. This made her happy because if she was going to take the subject it would be nice to actually pass.
Groups were formed and of course the Puffs were asked to join with the Lions AFTER Bay had Graduated. She had lots of opportunities to partner with him in the past, but she just missed him so much. Hearing Puck ask if anyone wanted to work with her, she jumped at the opportunity and was pleased to see Toby there as well. "Hey, guys." Yes, she wasn't even going to ask because Puck loved her and wouldn't ever say no to working with her... and well Toby was super nice and wouldn't say no either.

Toby grinned between both girls for a second like 'hey look at us in a GROUP and all', before flipping through his textbook to find the right chapter (though he could more or less recall a whole bunch of stuff from it, after all last year's studying... so... much... studying...)
"Okay, so..." he began, trailing his finger down the page to find the right sections. "I think it makes sense to start with looking at Hermione's Expression Number from before her name changed, see how well that applies, and then look at it from after she changed it, see how well it fits, and then... compare?" Toby found the part he needed, glanced up at the other two, back at his parchment again, and then back to the textbook.
"Before, her number was a 7... mission in life to evaluate and seek out... dig deeply and contemplate... da da da... skill at analysis... scrupulous ways... being thoughtful and discerning will lead you to your destiny... hmmm... You're destined for educating the world. Specialize and teach your wisdom."
As he read, Toby had been sort of reading those key parts out loud, tapping the page with his fingertips and twirling his quill around his hair. He stopped at the end and looked up at the other two.

Did... that make sense? Or was he stretching it a bit without realising it. The Hufflepuff looked between the others in his group. "Whatcha think?"

You know, they probably could've even stopped the group there if they wanted to. Three people? Good number, yeah? And Tanner should know all about good numbers 'cause Arithmancy. But before he could do much else but give Adi a thumbs up, Kace started walking over and oh, yeah! AWESOME! Now they had a really good team. Hopefully the others were better at numbers because oops.
At least he'd try? Thought that counts in the end, right? Right. "We'll make a great team, guys! So uh, page eight... Right?" The Gryffindor quickly flipped through the textbook in front of him, before landing on the right page because really, it wasn't that hard to get to being within the first ten and all. Turning to Zeke he pointed at the number seven. "So ours was this number," and with that he began reading through the little blurb about seven. Because that was important.

Which made perfect sense by the way because wasn't Hermione a bit of a know it all? Like... She did cherish wisdom and trying to figure things out with her inner wisdom and all of that. Especially through education because she was one of the top students and all. He knew that much. Of course they'd have to do interpretations and stuff about it too. But first, he'd wait for everyone to read the little bit about the number. Or at least he'd wait for Zeke to read it and maybe Kace and Adi to read the about the number they got.

.
It appeared that Miss Addison had finally finished. How had she done? "Well done, little eaglet. Make sure you thank Prefect Banner for the help." Manners were important, after all. She probably already had done so, but a reminder couldn't hurt.
.
"Clearly the difference in surname impacts the calculations themselves. Here is your task: I would like you to form groups of anywhere from two to five people." The size was not the important thing here. "I would like the Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs to form groups together, and the Ravenclaws and Slytherins should do the same. That way every group will be discussing the same woman." She walked over to her textbook and checked the page number. "Using page eight of your textbook, discuss how both numbers' interpretations apply to your woman's life. Is one number better or worse? Is it possible that one could represent the early life and the other later life? You tell me, this was your idea!"
"Go!"
Gabriel would never be good with praise...and this was no different. Flushing brightly, he ducked his head and looked to his sister. Always an easy distraction, he wanted Ruby to do well...and more importantly, he wanted her to be confident enough to try.
"Thank you, professor."
Still blushy from the professor's words, Gabe nodded to Kate, who'd just thanked him for helping her out. It wasn't a bother...and they were in the same house. See, he was slowly accepting that he'd be in this position a lot...with helping people...and that wasn't so bad. He'd managed with his sister and the small Claw...AND WITH MINIMAL STUTTERING.
Now, with this pairing up business. It was always the case, wasn't it? "Working together"?

Arithmancy Lesson 1: What's in a Name?
Does marriage and taking another name change ones numbers? "The prevailing choice of ancient Arithmancers, and therefore of your textbook, is to use your birth name for all calculations throughout your lifetime."
"Because name changes tend to correspond with big life changes or decisions, the new school of thought holds that your personality, values, habits, et cetera are impacted to an extent that would make calculations with your new name entirely appropriate."
"The view put forth by the rest of you is somewhere in the middle, using both calculations to gain a better picture of how the name-changing event affects your life. No one has yet, to my knowledge, come up with a mathematical rule for combining calculations with both names."

He would love to work with her just as they did so often but he figured she would turn him down again. Besides, she just avoided his eye contact. Clearly she was still mad at him.

Ruby was totally sticking with her brother for the record. And apparently the little kids that he was beckoning over? Okay.
SHE didn't want to write things down if she could help it, but she'd join in on the discussion stuff. Ruby bit her lip and then, just in case Gabe didn't realise, "I'm working with you."
Sucked that she had to move seats, but worth it. Gabe made this whole thing a LOT easier and she was going to make the most of that while he felt like being nice.

Norah used 300% of her energy to NOT squeal when Professor Tanner wrote the correct numbers on the board. UH HUH. OH YEAH, she got it RIGHT. HEHEHEHehehehe. She picked up her quill and added some sparkly stars and hearts around her answer just to commemorate her TRIUMPH. There. Perfect. The third year looked up to see everyone else grouping up, which made it pretty easy to figure out she had MISSED something while she was celebrating her correct answer for once. NOT that she regretted it, 'cause the day she regretted glittery hearts and stars would be a sad day indeed.
Rising from her chair, Norah looked around and spotted Kace and Adi with two other Gryffindors (Zeke and Zander) and walked immediately in their direction. Well, immediately after pausing to count all their heads, which added up to FOUR and not FIVE so really she was allowed to go and join. Even she was capable of doing that kind of math in her head. Plus, Adi and Kace were the nicest people ever and it didn't even bother her that they were all boy's 'cause now that she was THIRTEEN whole years old she knew that most boys didn't even have cooties. SO there.
Setting her book down on the table, she stuck her curly-haired head right into their circle and asked, "Can I work with you guys?" She grinned at Kace and Adi, and then over at the Gryffindor boys whose names she knew both started with Z's but what their names actually were was completely beyond her. The thirteen year old stood on her tiptoes to get a little closer to eye level and held up an ink bottle, just in case they needed further convincing. "I've got sparkly ink too!" TA DA. BEST way to make friends. Now if they said she couldn't join she'd know she didn't even WANT to associate with any such sort of glitter-hating crazies. It was really quite simple, actually. Sparkles could be the best test of character. Bouncing on her toes now, Norah WAITED what seemed like a bazillion years to see what they would say.

Did... that make sense? Or was he stretching it a bit without realising it. The Hufflepuff looked between the others in his group. "Whatcha think?"
Puck looked over when she heard Lux speak up and beamed at her. “Hey Lux c’mon join us” she grinned and back at Toby when he had grinned at the two of them. Okay, made sense. “yeah that makes complete sense” she nodded and listened as Toby read the section of the chapter on her expression number aloud…she was busy watching as he tapped his fingers and twirled the quill as he spoke.
That was talent.
Oh. Right. Work.
“Right I think it fits I think especially considering that she was the Department Head of Magical Law Enforcement…and I thinks he had that position before she got married or at least was on the path to it before then” she shrugged and nodded. It made sense.
She turned her attention to the board when he finished speaking as a way to refresh on what her expression number had changed to…so it had become a nine. With her textbook open she began to scan the page looking for the number.
“Okay and after marriage her expression number changed to a nine” she simply said aloud so she wouldn’t look crazy when she began reading about the number as Toby had. “So…nines mission is to perfect and love unconditionally…having kids could do that to someone” she muttered and continued reading the section aloud “purpose is to strive for universal brotherhood or sisterhood using humanitarianism, responsiveness, healing art…basically reaching out and helping people” she added with and tipped her head to the side.
“I have a feeling that while yes the numbers did change they are somewhat similar in regards to the fact that both have elements of ‘helping’ others.” She bit her lip slightly and glanced over to Toby and Lux as if asking or pleading with them to give a better more fitting answer.

Well, at least it looked like she’d gotten the right number. It didn’t change Brooklyn ‘s outlook on the subject, but at least she hadn’t been wrong. That was one thing she didn’t like to even tolerate. Being wrong was just disappointing, but then, so was the fact she apparently was now expected to work in a group. Discussions weren’t her strong suit, just arguments. That or conversations in which she ended up proving she was and deserved to be queen. Those hadn’t happened lately, by no fault of herself. Not risking points loss and losing the favorable opinion of her that Professor Bellaire had was more difficult than it seemed, but she wasn’t about to worry. She wasn’t like the other stupid people who apparently didn’t care if they risked the professor’s wrath, if the hourglass was any indication when she’d first headed up to this lesson.
Anyway, back to Arithmancy and the annoying fact she was supposed to work with people. There was always Hady, she imagined, who’d apparently gained a Claw. She wasn’t about to admit she couldn’t get a group on her own, though. She so could, but he wasn’t going to try. She wasn’t going to look desperate. She simply inclined her head, glancing around the room. Someone would find her. She had no doubt of that.
