For the first time in three years, the first drastic change has been made: There are proper desks and no stands for cauldrons, though the seats are still the same cushioned chairs. The washbasin and rubbish bin are still there, though it is clear they won't be needed today. Although the classroom doen't have any windows, it is well-ventilated. Despite the early hour, the professor looks well-rested and completely ready for the class ahead with a small smile on his face, sitting at his desk and welcoming the students.
OOC: The lesson has started, so please don't post yourselves late!

More...notes? Oh Merlin. This is just...too much for the prefect, really. It was a good thing that he did catch up on some Zs before attending this class. He will not dare fall asleep in Culloden's class. Nope. That will just upset the man. He's got a name to uphold, yeah?
So. Why do they have to stir clockwise, counterclockwise, wait, wave the wand and all that fancy steps while brewing a potion? Hmm. He's not sure about his answer, but it was worth a shot. Who knows, yeah? Ethan slowly raised his hand and waited for his turn to answer. "Some ingredients react to certain stirring motion, as well as spells. Maybe it is being done to maximize or minimize its effect?" Err...did that make any sense? Hopefully.

'Do not drink a potion you don't know'
These words ran through Grayson's head as he picked up his quill and started scribbling down some notes. This reminded him ALL too much of the love potion incident. Uh huh. Then again, he DID trust the person who gave it to him and still would. It was a matter of being careful, which could make you look like a loony afterwards but it was like his dad said: look after yourself first.
And this lesson was going by quickly, sweet Merlin.
Or maybe this was what it felt like to not have to force himself into taking notes for once.
Brewing technique? "Sometimes you have to stir clockwise and then add in a counter-clockwise stir in afterwards or vice versa. I thiiiiiiiiink," Pause while he phrased his thoughts. "I think it's down to the ingredients being magical and whatnot and you don't want to overdo anything to get a desired effect. It has to be just right, you know? You want a potion that's just right. So, you have to mix it in a certain way, which could include negating an effect by a fraction." His thoughts. Shrug.
Norah continued to write everything the Professor wrote on the board, in addition to some particularly smart-sounding answers. YAWN. She pondered the next question just to give her hand a break from all the writing. And anyways, she had been writing so fast that the entire thing just looked like a bunch of scribbles. WHAT a waste of a lesson. She put her aching hand in the air to contribute. "Sometimes you have to wait a bunch before moving on the next step. I think that's so all the ingredients already in there can react together or something before you add more." THAT part was always boring. Like this lesson. Bleh.

His hand went down slowly when the Professor didn't smile or nod or anything. He DID put the phrase up on the board but.....wasn't it important? Not to tickle a sleeping dragon?
EVEN in potions! Because what if someone was trying to get a dragon part or something and they accidentally tickled one?
But now Kyroh was sort of unsure if Culloden wanted him to answer again or not. And he didn't exactly know what brewing techniques did anyways, so he focused on writing down the five 5 C's.

Toby raised his hand again, after writing down aaaaaaaaaall those other notes. His writing hand was seriously starting to cramp up. Like for real.
"When you finish a potion, sometimes you have to leave it for a few days to let it..." Uh... there was a word for it. What was the word? "... sort of..." ... DRAT. "... not brew, not simmer, not- OH! Mature!" THAT WAS IT. "Probaly so that the effects become stronger and longer lasting. With some potions if you don't let them mature they would probably be super weak. And it's like with that... Hate Potion; sometimes the kind of potion means maturing is important. Emotions like 'hate' can stew and get more intense, so it makes sense for the potion to be allowed to get more intense, y'know?"
Were they nearing the end? Sophie's hand was cramping up, so she rested her quill back down and focused entirely on what Culloden was saying and the words on the blackboard - she probably didn't need to write anymore. She knew this stuff. Well... most of it. Some of the details here and there she didn't know, but it seemed like common sense. After flexing her hand for a little while, she picked up her quill again and jotted down those few things she didn't know for sure.
At his next question, Soph squinted - that was a weird sort of question, wasn't it? The first thing that came to her mind was all the different methods of stirring - with a wand, with a spoon, with a wooden stirrer, or with a metal stirrer, and so on. She... realized she didn't KNOW what effects those actually caused, though. What WAS the point? Why HAD they used both wooden and metal ones in that hate potion? What was the difference between one versus the other?
She realized she didn't know. And she didn't even have a good guess, at least not one she was willing to share out loud.
Her face settling on a sort of confused expression, Sophie kept her hand down this time, stayed silent, and tried to work through potential reasons - why DID it make a difference? Avoiding Culloden's gaze, she started flipping through the pages of her textbook to see if she could find out why. Though... she was certain she'd read nearly every page of the textbook thus far. Why hadn't she ever questioned it before?

More notes. Maddie's hand was getting tired by now but she kept at it, somewhere in the back of her mind hoping that Kyroh NEVER got his hands on a hugging potion. Something told her that SHE would be asked to be a test subject. JUST saying.
Techniques weren't that interesting. Clearly you did things to a potion for REASONS and Maddie LIKED to know those reasons but she'd rather research them on her OWN than listen to her classmates take guesses at why you did certain things. She DID know one thing for sure, though.
"We use a mortar and pestle and I know when you crush certain ingredients it helps to release important stuff inside whatever you're crushing like maybe a scent or an oil. S'probably why we crush certain things during the potions process."
...Zahra had DONE that before? Cosgrach eyed the girl, raised his eyebrows in confusion but didn't say anything. Okay. He'd add this to the list, because it WAS correct. Just... on the weird side.
Cosgrach DID notice her hair and gaped at it. Then he grinned back. "Nice hair," he said to the girl. It was pretty indeed, especially the colour. He wondered how she got it. Was it a magical dye?
...hairy ones? In the woods?
......
Was it that little Dot wandered into the Forbidden Forest and was traumatised for life? DID SHE SEE WEREWOLVES THERE? WAS SHE BITTEN? Was this all a hidden message to say all these - okay, no, it couldn't be. Cosgrach was certainly assuming too much. But WHAT IF?
He had to be sure for everyone's safety.
"Please come to my office after class, Dot," he told the girl, hoping his voice didn't tremble. Should he call aid?
?
Either Cosgrach was slow today, or Kyroh had turned into a Dash Scabior during the time they didn't see each other. Cosgrach couldn't quite make the connection - sure this was a philosophical phrase and all, but still... he added it to the list, just to humour the kid.

Again, the board was updating itself as they spoke.
"So, I believe we can summarise all in a few phrases," he said, and what he said was added beneath their answers, "One: Know your ingredients. Two: Always clean and inspect your equipment before and after each use. Three: Always cure your cauldron after each use. Four: Pay attention to detail and remember safety precautions! Five: Document everything. Six: Follow the instructions strictly unless you are 200% sure you know what you are doing (i.e. have special training and education in potions). Seven: Do not drink a potion you don't know." He paused for the blackboard and them to catch up with him. "Which can also be summarised as the five C's of potions: Color, concentration, care, cleanliness, and content. Now that we know them, I expect all of you to remember these in the future lessons." He eyed them all in a serious manner. He wasn't joking. He did expect them to remember these and hopefully not make mistakes. Maybe he ought to write them on the blackboard... but if he didn't have any students to yell at, what fun did teaching have? Haha.
Not. He'd seriously consider it.
"Our next question is about brewing techniques: What kind of an effect do brewing techniques have? For example, stirring a potion in a clockwise direction is used during some stages of potions for potions that enact a positive change. Can you think of anything else?"
OOC: This is where you can be as crazy and creative as you wish, as long as it is logical in a way.
I owe tribute to XanaSnape and Droo for compiling these safety guidelines.
Eden's hand was beginning to hurt because so much to write DOWN and she didn't want to MISS anything--OWLs at the end of this year? Yeah? She had to be all ready for those--which she was kind of scared for because she had gone to Durmstrang for all her other years, and she didn't know what kind of curriculum Hogwarts would be testing on. She should probably talk to someone about this...yeah...
Back to class, though. Eden had drawn a very complicated sun in corner of her notebook, and little vials, too...Mhmm. Helped to keep focus...She needed focus. Potions was not her forte whatsoEVER.
She had no clue what a technique was...pfffft. So she just kind of...stayed quiet this time and siiiiighed. She wished she had a flippin' watch. What was the time? Was it lunch time? Her stomach gave a large ROAR and she just looked down...darn it. Lunch was probably....hours away.

Wow. Rumple didn't know it was possible to fall asleep with his eyes open...and yet he'd just done it.
He blinked a few times and sat up. UGH this was so boring! This wasn't going to help him at all. He should just up and leave right now...would anyone really miss him if he left? Not likely. That kid had already put him in a bad mood by screaming at him...this was NOT where Rumple wanted to be right now. Sigh.
Still, he had to hope that he would get to brew a potion at SOME point here...so here he was, raising his hand. "Brewing techniques can make or break a potion. If you make even the slightest mistake - whether it's stirring the wrong way or lighting your flame too intensely can really mess it up and make your potion do something you didn't intend it to," he explained.

Copying more and more notes. Man he never got a break but he saw the blackboard and copied down some notes on what not to do with potions. He copied down his favorites instead of all because next thing you know the professor moved on. He remembered learning about the 5 C's of potions. They were Color, concentration, care, cleanliness, and content. He heard the next question and wondered what effect the brew techniques have. Kace thought about it and heard other student's answers and they were good.
He wanted to think of a unique one but he raised his hand and offered some information, "Professor I think putting the exact measurements of ingredients can effect the potion because I mean I wouldn't want my potion exploding or melting or anything of that matter.." he shrugged.
Angel looked at the Professor and raised her hand. "Professor if you don't do the steps right you might accidently create something new." Angel wasn't sure if that would be a bad thing because some good ideas came from mistakes but she didn't want to get into trouble with the Professor for being crazy.

More note taking, which meant more hand cramping and more wrist shaking. As much as she loved this subject, Lux was starting to hope the lesson would be done soon...before her hand fell off. The five Cs of potion making were important, though a review for her. But review was always helpful.
Moving on to brewing techniques, there were some that she knew but a lot of them were being said already so she decided to stay silent for this one. No point in restating what someone else had already mentioned.

"I believe she meant the potion itself can't hug ya." Which was true, unles Kyroh meant for the POTION to hug? He owed the kid a meeting on that one, didn't he...
Ravenclaws were clever, as always. "Right," he said to the girl and smiled. What she said appeared on the blackboard.
Hmm... "I'm sure yo are familiar with Nicolas Flamel and his Elixir of Life? It's a potion, and as long as you take it regularly, you can live forever and ever."
Cosgrach grinned right back as if it was a secret joke between them while what she said appeared on the blackboard.
"You're right, money is our world's limit as a whole."
Haha... "Clever." Though it wasn't quite what he was looking for.
"Exactly." Cosgrach smiled at the future potioneer. He got this!
"Sorry to hear about your brother. Girls tend to be so, I know." Oh, he knew. As for her answer... "but you've observed her well. You're right about love."
Cosgrach frowned, thinking. "No, well, it depends on your definition of 'mature', but I'm sure with a healthy combination, this can be achieved." Good try, though?
C'monnnn, didn't she know any perfume?
"But they can! That was one of the things that set us apart from muggles in the Middle Age." How they didn't bathe and smelt but wizards smelt all well? Yeah?
Leave it to the Ravenclaws to get the correct answers!
"Precisely." He smiled at the boy with much approval. This one had enough wits to be great, he did.
"Right, Ben." The count stood at 4 Ravenclaws, 1 Gryffindor that gave the answers he'd wanted. He smiled at the boy. Hopefully he felt better?
Cosgrach chuckled. "They can't, right." These Huffies and their friendly nature. Made his day... usually.
...soup? WHat was up with soups and Dot today? Did she just... BARED her teeth? Uhhh...
"That's... right. Yes. They can't be soup." Okayyyy.
So.
"Five of you were right on target," he said while the blackboard updated itself fully, "and we covered everything. These are potions' limits."
He let them copy it before speaking again.
"Let's move onto safety and such, then. What are the safety guidelines we should follow? Please list only one thing, thank you."
Now, this would be interesting.

Gabe had continuing writing through the last question; head bent down and eyes rechecking his spelling and what have you as the ink flowed. It was so strange. He felt good about this lesson...and really, he didn't know if seeing the potion's master outside of the classroom had been the cause. Could've been......Some of the mysique had been lost.

Can a muggle brew our potions? No, because 'our' potions need the element of magic to make them work. Most times when brewing 'our' potions, a spell or incantation is needed to set the ingredients. Muggles can't perform magic.
Do they have potions of their own? Yes, using various herbs, plants, minerals, and fungi. They typically call these things medication or supplements, however. Not potions.
What CAN potions do? help solve crimes
harm and in some instances to kill or seriously maim
manipulate emotions
heal illness and injuries
change our appearance
make you super strong
causes eternal sleep
enhance your memory
help you have more or less full control over a situation (unless your opponent has a bezoar/an antidote)
affect the outcome of a situation (like Felix Felicis)
keep things stable
manipulate people into doing things without their control
save lives
make someone's day infinitely better or worse
etc.
What CAN'T potions do? revive dead
make someone directly richer
create an object
create eternal love (or any other emotion forever)
What are the safety guidelines we should follow? 1. Know your ingredients.
2. Always clean and inspect your equipment before and after each use.
3. Always cure your cauldron after each use.
4. Pay attention to detail and remember safety precautions!
5. Document everything.
6. Follow the instructions strictly unless you are 200% sure you know what you are doing (i.e. have special training and education in potions).
7. Do not drink a potion you don't know.
Five C's of potions: Color, concentration, care, cleanliness, and content
What kind of an effect do brewing techniques have on individual potions? TBA
".........The material of the utensils used?"....As in some potions requiring stirring with a wooden spoon...as opposed to a metal one. Just like some ingredients needed to be sliced and chopped with tempered steel, instead of just stainless steel. "I think anyone brewing potions has to be careful due to some ingredients reacting differently to either wood or metal. In the case of stirring rods."
Yep, completely relaxed now. What an.........odd feeling.

Layla's answer appeared on the board and she was grateful that she was in fact able to offer something at least productive towards the entirely theory based lesson. She didn't mind this sort of activity for she had to catch up on all this anyway. Besides, it was the sort of stuff that came up in exams and if she didn't know the basics then it would be entirely embarrassing. She was a little disappointed that the Prof hadn't complimented her for her entirely out of the box idea, at least she thought it was.
Maybe it was actually a rule?
As for the next question she couldn't offer anything useful, mostly because she was entirely sure and she didn't want to read from the textbook and sound like a repetitive machine. Instead she listened intently to the others ideas whilst writing the previous responses from the blackboard into her notes neatly and carefully.
Oh and she HAD heard Eden's stomach growling and had raised her eyebrow at her. Honestly..
Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite
Lex had to pause, mid-writing, to get some proper movement back into her wrists. All this writing was starting to make the bone feel stiff and she didn't fancy losing her hands to this theory. Important it was, but not crucial. No more crucial than her wand hand that would actually take her places in life. The notes wouldn't be leaving the board in the blink of an eye so there was some time to get caught up and internalize everything. Saved on the hardcore studying later.
A part of her wondered why she kept going though. When you think about it, with all this writing it would be a lot of reading; something the Gryffindor didn't do. What were the odds she'd review this stuff later when it was time to study?
However that worked out, she felt pretty done answering questions. They'd gotten through a lot and her brain was starting to reject the information, a sure sign they'd been at it too long.
It was a wonder she was still getting words on the parchment!

..... Okay, okay maybe the brewing stuff wasn't so bad after all. ANYTHING had to be better than THIS. It was so hard trying to keep up and jot everything down and who, huh, what? SEE even Sophie Brown didn't know the answer. And she basically lived inside of her potions textbook. Actually, wouldn't be surprised if she actually did. She lived and breathed this stuff. And if she didn't know, how was someone like this particular Gryffindor meant to? Just wasn't fair.
So instead of even attempting to answer he just stared at Professor C with a look of utter confusion. Not even gonna focus on getting those five C's down or whatever. This was all too much. Why did this stuff even matter? Did it even make a difference if he used high heat instead of low heat? Or the wooden spoon instead of the metal one? Or stirred three times instead of 5?! Did it even matter?

"I don't know, Professor C," Zahra admitted with a little shrug. "This is the part that I always screw up, because why does it matter if I go one way with my stirring or the other? hehe. Or if I stir TWENTY FIVE times instead of ten or whatever. Potions are super picky." Like really. "How about..." Zahra was THINKING SO HARD, trying to come up with something not already said..."....... time.....? Like..... OH HEY HOW ABOUT FULL MOON? Like add it the whatever ingredient at the FULL MOON?" OH MAN WAS THAT RIGHT? ZAHRA WAS A FREAKING SCHOLAR!
Cosgrach sighed and patiently waited for her to finish.
"It matters, Zahra," he said, "because these react to each other and your way of brewing affects the reactions." Made sense? "Time matters too, yes." So she wasn't so terrible at this, see? Haha she was, but Cosgrach appreciated her effort.
Once again, the answers Cosgrach selected and edited appeared on the board, though he did smile at everyone who tried to answer.

With that done, he said "It is also worth noting here that the spell 'SpeRevelio' reveals the contents of a cauldron unless it's dark magic. But you don't need to worry about dark side of potions unless you mean to study it at university." He eyed Silas and Kevin briefly before moving on while that was added on the blackboard too. He didn't ask that as a question for it was too easy for them... right? Hopefully.

Oh goody. The last three questions. Adi smiled a bit as he wrote down the spell and its use, pleased to hear Culloden say that. He was getting tired of scribbling notes in a class that he was accustomed to doing practical stuff.
"Cauldrons,'' Adi said promtply, probably even before his hand went up. "Used for brewing the potion.'' Definitely the most important tool in potion making.

Benny quickly yet carefully copied down the list that the other students suggested and Professor Culloden had added to the board. Apparently his own idea hadn't been quite what he had been looking for this time around. Oh well...he couldn't get them all and potions was still not his favoritie or best subject even trying to be calmer.
Oh goodie...only three more questions to try and think of an answer. To question one...
"A mortar and pestle," he suggested after raising his hand. That counted as only one item right? Since they worked together and you couldn't exactly use one without the other. "To crush and break down ingredients into powder or at least smaller pieces."
Kace was relieved that there was only three more questions. His hand couldn't take it anymore. He copied the remaining notes and the ones on the blackboard and even the spell he didn't know about. He wondered what he knew about one potion tool and its use. He heard Adi's answer and nodded. It was a good one. He smiled and raised his hand and said the next thing,
"Professor we use scales to help measure out the ingredients we need." This was important too because you needed to know how much something weighs for potions.
She gave up on her hunt to find what she had wanted her answer to be for the last question and closed her textbook when someone spoke up and basically answered it for her. But... it still... didn't make a TON of sense. Why, in their last potion, had they gone from a metal stirring stick to a wooden one, then back to metal? If the wooden one was okay to use in the middle, why wouldn't it also have been at the beginning? All the same ingredients were still there, so... did it just matter at the time of it being stirred? The specific combination of ingredients at the time of each stir and how they'd interact with a foreign object being lowered into the concoction?
...Maybe she was overthinking it a little.
Or MAYBE she was being thorough and posing the good questions, she wasn't sure about that either.
She sighed, though, and tuned back in soon enough to hear Culloden's next request of them. One tool? "A clean cutting knife?" she offered, her hand in the air. "Used to cut 'n slice certain ingredients in the preparation stage before y'add them." You could also do that with a wand, she knew, and she ALMOST added that, too, but... then that'd be more than one potions tool listed. So she held off on adding that extra tidbit of information. "S'important 'cause y'don't always need the whole part of the ingredient, or y'might have to gradually add a little bit at a time. Bits 'n pieces versus a whole ingredient can matter 'cause of surface area 'n such, so there can be a difference in how the potion reacts to the ingredient based upon whether it's one thing or a bunch of segments of it." Such a model student.
Silas noticed the look Proffy gave him and nodded slightly. Got it. Darker side of potions at Uni. Crazy he was already thinking of his future, right?! Not really...
"The things you stir with. Whether it's wood or otherwise. The introduction of a stirring utensil and what it's made of can affect the potion just as much as anything else can." Yeaaaaah man. YEAH. He was pretty decent at this potions stuff, yeah? And it was no surprise he found himself being a bit more confident after his visit with the Potions Professor.

Jasmine was busy, continuing to take notes as her classmates and Professor Culloden spoke. This class was moving at warp speed and she was trying very hard o keep up with the goings on.
When the next question was posed, Jasmine was ready with her answer. She raised her hand to give her input. "A vial is used to bottle your potion after it is completed." You would definitely need one of those, or several.

Rumpelstiltskin was dyinggggg. All he wanted to do was just do his work, make some sinister potions, and continue with his gold spinning business. No wonder so many students got so stressed out at school - this was boring. Merlins PANTS was it boring.
"Well, one tool is obviously the cauldron - it holds all your stuff tog..." however, mid sentence, Rumple started to trail off. A few seconds of staring at the blackboard, and suddenly, it was like a new person had emerged in the desk.
Blink.
Blink.
Blink.
Caleb had no idea how he had gotten to Potions class or what they were doing. There were no potions around, no cauldrons...what were they doing? Why was he here? Was this the class? He was so lost...
"Um...Professor, what are we doing?" he asked him softly, his hand slowly raising into the air. That was probably a stupid question but...he was confused. And his head hurt like a LOT. Caleb thought a nap sounded FANTASTIC right about now too...

By this point, so soooooooooo close to the end of the lesson, Toby's fidgeting and moving around had gone up a gear. He'd been writing and focusing for so long that trying to think of correct, or at least logical, answers for the questions was hurting his brain. By this point he was answering with the first thing that came to mind, whether or not it sounded right.
Like right now, Toby raised his hand, aaaaand...
"The person making the potion," he supplied, fingers waggling in the air. "Potion can't be made without the witch or wizard there to make it."
