Default Astronomy Lesson 1 :: "Geocide"

FINALLY entering the Astronomy classroom after the 'House Elves at work. Please do not disturb' sign had been removed, you see nothing out of the ordinary other than an especially clean classroom. The desks are arranged in their usual semi circle to help created a more personal and inviting environment. The late afternoon sunlight shines through the windows to give the room an almost heavenly glow.

In the front of the classroom is the professor's desk sitting before a massive chalk board that appears to be empty for the time being. Professor Flamsteed is currently leaning against his desk with his bum while finishing up a comic book he had started while waiting outside the classroom for the elves to finish their work.

Did you remember to use the lint roller on the small table outside of the classroom? It was there next to the sign that reads, "Not to be used as a brush for your hair" and has the signature of a former student in the bottom right corner.

So come on in and have a seat. Class will begin shortly despite the hour delay due to a conflict in house elf cleaning schedules.

Lesson Progression
question 1 :: what does astronomy mean to you and why do we study it? Don't forget your nifty name tag!
question 2 :: can you identify any of these "famous" science fiction figures?
question 3 :: imagine you are an evil mastermind, how would you go about destroying the Earth?
activity 1 :: practice making a planet using the colored bags of "sand" provided
activity 1 :: UPDATE. Optional spellwork and last call to practice
activity 2 :: LET'S DESTROY THE SOLAR SYSTEM!
classroom diagram for the activity

activity 2 :: STANDINGS UPDATE! 1. Hufflepuff 2. Slytherin 3. Ravenclaw 4. Gryffindor
activity 2 :: RULE MODIFICATION. Please read. STANDINGS UPDATE! 1. Gryffindor 2. Ravenclaw 3. Slytherin 4. Hufflepuff
activity 2 :: LAST CALL FOR PARTICIPATION! 1. Slytherin 2. Ravenclaw 3. Gryffindor & Hufflepuff
no more green planets
CLASS DISMISSED! Congratulations Ravenclaw!
OOC: Sorry for the serious delay in starting time, but let's just be glad and thankful for the hard working SnitchSeeker.com techies for fixing the slight server hiccup <3

Please be sure you are familiar with Professor Flamsteed's rules BEFORE you post in this lesson. We will know if you haven't read them! All SnitchSeeker site rules apply.

Class will officially begin in approximately 20 hours from the time of this post.

This lesson has officially started! Please do not announce your character arriving late and just pretend like they have been in class all along. You are free to jump in any time and should use the lesson progression links to keep up.

They were making PLANETS!? How freaking cool!!! Jeremiah wigged in his seat a bit before waiting till he could get up. He reallllly wanted Green sand on account of green was his favorite color but he'd settle for red on account of it might as well be the second best color available.
Jumping up from his seat he bounced over to the bags and collected one bag of red sand bounced back to his seat while saying the spell out loud just for practice. It seemed to roll off the tongue a real fun one really!

"Fingere Elementiiiii" yup he liked it! Setting the bags of sand back on his desk he brought his eyes down to their level and squinted at the magic plant!making sand. so col. Personal!Planets! Were they able to name them!? he needed a cool planet name! Biting his lip he looked at the sand before sitting back and pointing his wand at it.

" Fingere Elementi!" JAB JAB JAAAAAAAB!

He stared... and he waited as he watched the bag seem to slowly inflate... O.O how coooooooooool!!!!!! 'POP!' "Whoa." he sat back suddenly in his seat as his bag popped into planet like circle shape, well minus that slight indent just there... Squint what?

SPOILER!!: professor reply, edited for the parts that concern Ophelia

At how easily pop culture had made it seem the Earth was to be destroyed. How any planet for that matter could just go KABOOM with the flip of a switch. But that was what made science fiction so fascinating, wasn't it? The fact that there was no end to what the imagination could come up with with applied to scientific inquiry and loose theory.

While students' active imaginations were stellar to see working, some of them were also quite...terrifying in how methodical their 'plans' were. He wasn't trying to create the next army of Death Eaters or anything (although the thought of scientific Death Eaters was a rather amusing one) but he found himself hoping that none of them, especially some of the Ravenclaws, found their way to Knockturn Alley and befriended some of the more unsavory sort of witches and wizards.

"Alright alright, that is enough ideas for now," he announced, raising both of his hands to attempt to draw some more attention to himself after checking his sundial watch for the time. "While all of your apocalyptic ideas and methods are creative, they are just that. Ideas. Popular culture has created a vision that the Earth can easily be destroyed. The truth of the matter is that the Earth is a planet that has been built to last. It is already some 4.54 billion years old and is essentially a 5.972 sextillion, that's 18 zero's, metric ton ball of iron floating in space."

He took a few steps away from his desk and stood in the center of the room with a somewhat grim expression on his face.

He paused again. "The same goes for blowing the planet up entirely, either from the outside or from within. To even hope to accomplish this one would need approximately 1,246,400,000,000 tonnes of antimatter to blast the planet apart so much that gravity could not pull the bits back together and reform it. Let's just say that humans are no where near that number." Debunked. Again.

There obviously was not enough time to go into everyone's theories and talk the science behind them, so he was going to put all that to rest for now.
"But enough talk for now. Wands out everyone!" he commanded as he gave his desk a firm tap and made 4 boxes of what looked like house colored sand (blue, red, yellow, and green) wrapped up on small plastic parcels. "A few terms ago I had students create their own solar system as a laboratory exercise. Today, we will not exactly be doing that, but knowing how to create a planet-like object will be necessary. These bags," he said as he picked up one of the red 'sand' bags. "Contain ground up stone, iron, and a little something extra to help recreate a planet-like orb that will float in the air on its own if you perform the spell correctly. I would like each of you to come get a bag or two in your house color." Yes, Miss Wisteria, yellow. "And try to create a planet. Simply jab your wand towards the bag and say Fingere Elementi," he explained as he demonstrated. The clear plastic of the bag began to melt and float upwards in his hand before spinning like a top. After a few moments, and with a loud POP!, a perfectly spherical "planet" was floating in the palm of his hand.

"Once you have created a planet please just sit tight. The real activity will begin after a few minutes of practice."

And for the record, HE could certainly live without having his personal bubble ruptured by hugs.
OOC: ACTIVITY TIME!

You will need a minimum of 1 post for this portion, but of course can do more if you want.

The steps you need to be sure to include are the following:
  • collect a plastic bag of colored "sand" in your house color
  • perform Fingere Elementi (wand movement is a jab towards the bag)
  • successfully create one house colored planet! (or not if your character is really bad at spells. That's cool beans too)

Minor explosions are fine, but nothing that would land your character in the hospital wing or without a limb, please and thank you!

Got a question? Please feel free to shoot me a VM or PM or ask Professor Flamsteed IC. Just be sure to title your post with something like "PROFESSOR HELP!!!" to make sure I do not accidentally overlook you!

You will have approximately 24 hours to complete this activity.

So she COULDN'T blow up the planet? Darn, there went Ophelia's plan for world domination. Back to the drawing board, kid. Also, no black holes, or destroying the atmosphere, but asteroids. Lots of asteroids apparently. So that was something. Although, the chance that the kid would actually do something like taking over the world was slim to none. Ophelia didn't like to be stuck doing something for too long, and when you're president of the world, that's kind of a full time job.

Also, should the firstie be afraid of asteroids now? Because the Professor was making them sound scary. But it also made you think, how fragile everything was and how they needed to cherish it all and this and that and the other thing about Earth conservation. Yeah, Newton went through a whole Earth phase, one that would've resulted in some consequences if she didn't shut up about it three months later.

...............................................

This class? She liked it. They got to make their own planet! How cool was that? Sooo cool! This was something that the kid was writing home to her parents. Excitedly, the blonde clapped her hands twice and flipped her wavy blonde hair behind her shoulder before getting up and grabbing the blue bag of sand. Blue. For Ravenclaw. Cuuutte! Anyway. The spell? Writing the name of the spell --trying twice to spell it correctly and having to mouth each letter to herself to do it-- in her notebook and then getting the bag of sand into her right hand. Okay, the movement. Jab. Jabby jab jab. Simple. Okay, this would be easy. Right?

"Fingere Elementi!" Oh Merlin! The bag exploded, both on the floor and then on her. Panic ran through her, and the shorter girl's tanned skin turned beet red with humiliation. Why did everything happen to HER? This wasn't fair! Maybe she should've practiced a little more? Maybe have asked what exactly to do?

"I'm so sorry!" A stuttering yell. Her brown eyes were silver dollar sized with nervousness. Was she going to lose Houspoints for this?

She was going to try this again.

The first attempt at this bizarre and brand new spell had not gone exactly smoothly for the Ravenclaw but she wasn’t going to give up just yet. Nor was she going to enthusiastically spring her hand up and ask for help. That was embarrassing, she was fifteen not five. She didn’t need help, at least that was what she was telling herself.

The first years on the other hand had no worries about dragging the prefects over to do their spells for her. It was quite reassuring to see that other students were having problems too though, she didn’t want to be stuck out like a sore thumb.

Layla was clever at her old school. She didn’t tell anyone that but the teachers knew, at least the ones where she bothered to complete assignments did. School wasn’t about grades back in Clapham, it was about being popular and hanging about with your mates around the school gates. This private school business did nothing for her. Residential school kids where she was from were criticised and mocked for being ‘posh’, now she was one of them. Except everyone knew that she didn’t speak posh. No, city girl still retained her ‘Sauff Laaandon’ accent.

She picked up her wand and jabbed it towards the blue bag of sand with a determined huff. “Fingere Elementi!” she called simultaneously. To her surprise this attempt actually worked and the plastic melted away and the sand clumped together to form a slightly wonky but that didn’t matter, sphere. Or a planet as the Professor had described it as.

Norah beamed with pride at Professor Flamsteed. LOOK AT HER, BEING REFERENCED. Uh-huh, everyone could just call her the queen of Astronomy from now on.

WAIT. They got to make their own planets?? If THAT didn't qualify as supermegacrazy cool, she didn't know what did. She could name it Norahville! Or Kittredgetopia. She collected a bag of yellow sand and brought it back to where she was sitting. Picking up her wand, she jabbed it at the bag and said firmly, "Fingeri Elementi." The bag lifted up for a moment before flopping back down on the table. Darn. Pointing her want at the bag again, she shouted said even louder, "Fingeri Elementi!" and jabbed her wand sharply towards the bag. It lifted higher this time, the bag melting away and spinning just like the professor had demonstrated, eventually turning into a little sphere. Woah. Cool beans. She grinned triumphantly at her little planet, floating there above her palm. Bow down, subjects, for Queen Norah. Hah.

Couldn’t people be original and come up with their own ideas? Obviously not.

They were asked to perform a spell and the fifteen year old sunk a little in her seat at the prospect. She was new to this magic business, she’d been a muggle for her whole life and she still wasn’t completely acquainted with how to concentrate her magical skills into one place. She was going to give it a go though and not ask for help in case people judged her as being stupid. She wasn’t stupid, she was just late.

Layla got up off her seat and grabbed a blue bag of sand as required in the first step of the activity. She brought it back to her desk and glanced at it for a short while. How was she going to go about this then?

She'd managed to perform some sort of magic earlier in the lesson with her name tag but that seemed extremely easy, all she needed to say was her name. Her attempts to get a message in the crystal ball hadn't worked but quite frankly she hadn't even tried with that. She didn't even believe that it was possible anyway.

After about 5 minutes of procrastination, she finally pointed her wand at the bag. “Fingere Elementi” she muttered and watched hopefully. Until absolutely nothing happened. Why didn’t it work? Why did her spells never work on the first try? She sighed audibly and slumped down on her seat. She supposed she should probably try again until it worked but quite frankly she didn’t want to bother.

And she definitely wasn’t going to ask for help either.

Walking around the classroom a bit more, the astronomer noticed a Ravenclaw (AGAIN, the Ravenclaw females today!) being a real stick in the mud. Or perhaps she had eaten a particularly bad lunch and that was making her a bit lethargic? Whatever the case was, he slowly began to make his way towards her to offer some feeble words of encouragement when she got back into spellwork herself and had produced a planet.

"Well done," he nodded with a quick wink. Wonky or not, it would do for the purpose of the exercise. "Pity we don't have gravity to work in our favor for these holding their shape," he continued as he leaned forward a bit to poke her planet with his wand, causing it to spin a bit more. "Not nearly enough mass for it to pull itself into the most efficient shape on its own. You'll get it next time."

Just had to thiiiiiiink like gravity. Be the force of gravity.

And now he had a certain song mentioning gravity...and defying it...stuck in his head.

Ahem.

......

"Just you and IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII defying graaaaavit--------------"

Airey's head snapped around - his stellar singing interrupted - and blue eyes fell on the Ravenclaw (AGAIN!) who was now...covered in blue sand as well as the floor around her. Well, actually, she was looking a bit purple with the way her skin was blushing like that - but no need to point out the specifics out loud.

"Not to worry noooooot to worry," Airey replied with one hand up in the air in a stop position. No, seriously. Don't panic. "Simply grab another bag and give it another go." With a swift swish of his wand, the professor banished away the mess - save for her robes because students should know how to keep those clean and presentable. Couldn't do ALL the work for her now, could he? "These things happen."

He had seen that too, Miss Cambridge. The green. Eyebrow raises for you.

Checking his sundial watch once again, he looked up and addressed the class. "About 5 more minutes of practice and we'll begin the activity. For those who have already completed your planet, you may want to practice the Locomotion Charm charm on it. It will come in handy in just a bit. Simply point your wand at your planet and say Locomotor planet, then use your wand to guide it where you want it to go."
OOC: Instructions for the next activity will be posted in approximately 4 - 5 hours.

Practicing the Locomotion Charm is NOT a requirement given the short amount of time between now and the time the activity will begin.

As always, any questions you may have can be directed at me via VM or PM or asked of Professor Flamsteed IC.

Dante was listening to his other classmates describe how they would destroy the world. They were totally some evil geniuses in this room and some ideas were just plain awesome. Professor Space Man just kept on talking and talking and sorry but Dante did not have that good of a attention span for this sort of thing.

Wands Out, now that is what Dante wanted to hear.

Dante took his wand out and went up and grabbed a bag of green sand. The coolest color here besides blue. At least there was no fancy wand movement. Just a straight jab at the bag. Might as well get this thing started. Dante jabbed at the bag and cast

“Fingere Elementi"

Whoa...that is seriously some cool stuff. Look at his little planet he hoped he would be blowing up too.

Or not...That was cool too and Meh. He would rather just watch his planet than try another spell.

David was kinda wishing he had been at Hogwarts for the creating a solar system thing. It sounded pretty awesome. Who wouldn't want to make their own solar system of planets? There were all kinds of cool things with it.

But anyway, at least they got to make a planet right now. That was also pretty cool.

And on his way up to get a bag of red stuff, he did happen to see some Slytherin guy whack Grayson from behind and hear the latter's surprise. Snort. David was totally casual and pretended like he hadn't noticed, but on the inside? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

This lesson was great.

He grabbed a red sand bag and then was back in his seat, pulling out his wand. Spell time. Finger...Element...or something. Maybe he should have written it down.

BUT it was okay because all he had to do was listen to some of the others casting the spell. One of the good things about going to a lesson with lots of other people.

So it was Fingere......Ele...menti? Fingere Elementi? That's what it sounded like. He'd been close with his guess then.

"Fingere Elementi!" He jabbed his wand at the bag...but nothing really happened. Meh, that was okay. Of course it wouldn't work on the very first try.

David tried to concentrate a little more and force that earlier amusement from his mind. Just focus on making this bag of sand turn into a little planet, Hensley.

"Fingere Elementi!" Jab!

And...it looked to be working! It was floating up a little and it looked like the plastic was melting away and it was all forming into a spherical shape...it faltered for a moment, and for a split second he worried it was all gonna collapse and FAIL...but then it stayed. A little red sphere-shaped planet. Chyeah.

He didn't even really bother trying to think about how he would destroy the planet. That required effort. People should be happy he's too lazy to be an evil mastermind. Or rather, too Hufflepuff.

Yep, Hufflepuff. Which is what he thought to himself as he went up to pick up a baggie with yellow colored sand in it. When he sat back down, he took a few moments to shake the contents and prod the bag a few times with his finger because for some reason, it was highly entertaining.

When he grew back up, he cleared his throat to speak the spell clearly, "Fingere Elementi!" Like a boss, he watched his little yellow bag transform into a little yellow planet. Aww, looook. Dec tapped his chin as he thought of a name for his adorable little planet. How about...Haze? Yes, PLANET HAZE. *creative!*

Ooh, he could make it fly with the locomotion charm? Fantastic! Dec pointed his wand at Haze casting, "Locomotor planet!" The boy grinned as he watched his planet move around with the guidance of his wand.

Easy peasy, Grayson makes me queasy, Declan thought to himself as he guided his planet over towards where the Slytherin was sitting and bumped his face with planet Haze. BOOP!!! Hehehehehehe.

Professor was approaching her. Why was he coming towards her? She didn’t ask for help and he certainly wasn’t supposed to have seen her failed attempt at the spell. That never happened, she just didn’t try hard enough originally obviously. But he was still coming over and now he was talking to her. She tilted her head a little as she glanced up from her desk at him. She had to admit, she kinda liked this guy. Although she was determined to do this by herself he was attentive enough to have noticed that she was ‘struggling’ and he seemed to like interacting with his students. Some teachers at her muggle school were just there to get paid, they had no aspirations regarding teaching kids their subjects. It was those sorts of teachers were Layla purposefully didn’t try.

And then it made them look bad to see an otherwise bright student fail.

Usually she would’ve replied to the well done with a sarcastic smile but his response seemed genuine so she managed a small smile instead. Until he started prodding at her planet that was. “There ain’t a planet that’s perfectly spherical” she protested watching as her planet spun round and he rambled on about gravity. “Those are the craters” she pointed to the wobbly surface. At least that was what she was telling herself now. She didn’t need professor to point out the flaws in her magic.

He walked off singing to an old muggle musical and Layla, living near the West End herself couldn’t help but to join in humming quietly behind him. Great, that was definitely going to get stuck in her head now.

“Kiss me goodbyeeee I’m defyyyiiing gravity.”

But then the subject was changed as they were allowed to progress onwards with the lesson and learn another spell. Great. More bloomin’ magic. She thought this was supposed to be all spacey and physics like, not full of spells and craft activities.

She picked up her wand and pointed it away from her planet first so that she could practice it before attempting the spell. “Locomotor Planet” she spoke clearly defining every syllable. She was SURE her accent was altering the magic. She then turned to the wobbly sphere, repeated the words and moved her wand in a clockwise direction allowing the planet to spin.

Okay. So that was pretty cool. Not particularly useful but cool.

"Sure...why not." Angel would get extra practice with spells and he could have access to a successful orb if he would up messing up a second time. "Try on that one," he suggested, motioning to the red bag Adi had originally brought over and she had missed in her movement to get her own. As for him, he was going to try again on the red bag he had gotten himself, the fourth year lion retaking his seat once more.

This time he practiced the incantation in his head without saying anything aloud. No accidents this time. Then placing the bag securely in a place on the desk in front of him, Ben took out his wand once more. Giving the bag a few practice jabs without touching it. Finally he figured he might as well give in and give it another shot. "Fingere Elementi!" he cast, jabing his wand in the direction of the bag. No explosion this time but not a true success either.

"Fingere Elementi!" he cast again after taking a deep breath as to focus him. This time he gave a sigh of relief when it worked and he had a floating 'planet'.

Hehe. Catching the look from Professor Flamsteed, Lux BEAMED. She was representing Gryffindor and if anyone had a problem with it she didn't care.

Practicing the Locomotor Charm sounded fun because she hadn't worked with it much yet, and it was a good way to kill some time before moving on to the next activity. Pointing her wand at the planet, she said, "Locomotor Planet!"

WOOOOOOO.

Zig zagging with her wand, she sent the planet moving around her table.

The professor listened carefully to each student as they spoke, nodding and mhmmming at all the appropriate places, but offered no specific reply just yet. Were they all listening to themselves?

"Now, several methods mentioned - fictional and not - were those that went on to talk about destroying the Earth's atmosphere. To make the planet itself inhabitable. Now the sad reality is that some of those methods are very real and is why the field of atmospheric sciences is so important. So, to go back to one of the very first questions of the lesson, why do we study astronomy, for some it is because they are trying to save lives. Knowing and understanding how humans can effect the Earth is vital, especially for you who are the future of the planet."

And all that was a bit dramatic, which is why his face then exploded into an overly exaggerated grin as he clapped his hands together firmly in front of his chest and rocked back on his heels.

He turned his attention towards Miss Kittredge and gave her a small nod. "However, those evil master minds among you who spoke of making Earth uninhabitable have, as Miss Kittredge has pointed out, failed the task at hand. Destroying life on Earth will not stop it from being a planet. Just for a bit of review, remember that a planet is defined by the following," he continued as he gave the blackboard another tap to make the images disappear and words appear in their place.

He turned his attention back to the semicircle of desks. "Most of you came up with concepts seemingly right out of science fiction. In fact, Mr. Baines and others who mentioned creating black holes have literally done that as that was Nero's method of destroying worlds." Using something called Red Matter, but there was no need to go into the fantasy science of things that were impossible to recreate but made for interesting plots. "You can read up on black holes in your textbook, and older students may recall our study of them in this classroom, but black holes eventually will evaporate due to something called Hawking radiation. For the average black hole out there, this will take a really REEEEEEEEALLY long time. But for something that could be 'created'," he said, using air quotes around the term because it was HIGHLY unlikely that such a thing would ever be able to be accomplished. "This would happen almost instantaneously, rendering your method...well...impossible. Pushing the Earth into a black hole using tractor beams..." BEAMS, Miss Banner. BEAMS. "...or other technology is also impossible. Gravity alone would prevent this from happening not to mention that the nearest black hole is some 1600 light years away from us."

"Now, asteroid impacts...the collision method for destroying the planet is a threat that is very real. Now, I use the term 'real' loosely here because the planet has already been struck by many over its lifetime and still continues its orbit around the Sun. Once when a Mars-sized object slammed into the Earth, billions of years ago...and of course the one that ended the dinosaur's time on Earth. An asteroid called 2014 RC was within one-tenth of the distance from Earth to the moon back in September of 2014, but NASA has an efficient asteroid detection technology in place as of 2065 that will give the Earth ample warning should anything threaten the Earth and, with the way technology is developing, we will have a means to take preventative measures."

And that was FAR too much talking. Yawning a little himself - and wishing he had some water - the astronomer looked down at his sundial watched and stretched his arms.

WOWOOWOWOWOW this professor talked a WHOOOOOLE lot. Eden didn't mind. She liked listening to him--and she liked this topic, too. So interesting. She had wanted to be an astronaut when she was a kid--so this was right up her alley. (Her childhood dream, alas, would never become true due to her grandparents insistence that a good witch NOT have a muggle occupation). SIIGH. But the next activity seemed FUN. And though it require magic, she just...she would her try her best!

>__>

She nodded and stood up, going to the sand and picking the pretty blue sand. She liked the color BLUE because it made her eyes look so nice--and, let's face it, Eden thought her only redeeming facial quality WAS her eyes--and she sat back down, her wand at the ready--

"Fingere Elementi!" she said sharply, brandishing her wand a bit.

The sand did nothing. She pouted...and tried again.

And again.

And.

Again.

Until FINALLY she scowled and jabbed her sand with her wand ANGRILY--and it kind of all....fell on her lap.

OOOOOPS.

She grooooooaned and looked over at Layla--who was sitting not FAR but not CLOSE either--and gave her the BIGGGGGGEST puppy eyes EVER?

SPOILER!!: Laylaaaa

Would she EVER get this? WOULD SHE?

She hadn’t answered the question about how she would destroy Earth. Mainly, Brooklyn didn’t see a point in destroying Earth. She would have much rather gone with the demoting it route, just so she could them turn around and do something to make it a planet again and she could be the ruler of it. Since she’d have been responsible for it being a planet again. It sounded like a much better idea, but she kept it to herself. She didn’t want anyone else to steal her idea after all, and then they had turned around and started actually creating their own planets. Tiny planets, but she still would own it. Therefore she would rule it, and it would be the best planet ever. Maybe she’d even name it Casterly Rock, even though it’d be entirely the wrong color.

Green was awesome though. Her favorite color, and she had no problem going up to snag a bag of the green sand. There was a thought of trying to make it even greener, but at the moment she couldn’t remember the right spell to do so. She’d never actually been able to try it, after all, so her little planet was just going to have to be the same green as all the other Slytherin planets. She still knew it’d be better. Setting the bag on her desk, she took her wand out and jabbed it at the sand. “Fingury…” No, that wasn’t right. She stopped, pulled her wand back and then jabbed it again. “Fingere Elementi.” The bag rose slightly, before doing the sort of melty thing and spinning into a little sphere of greenness and she grinned. Yay tiny planet, she thought, already deciding she was going to go with her idea of what to name it. It was Casterly Rock, and it was hers.

Spell practicing? Just like that? Without easing them into it or anything? Dot marched up to retrieve a bag of green sand, which she carried back to her desk. It just sat there, like a sagging, sad pumpkin. A green pumpkin. Dot tilted her head in the direction of the sag to get a feel for what she was doing with this spell. Jab the wand and cast, and it would rise up and turn into a planet that she could hold.

Why did it sound so much easier than it really was?

Dot squinted at her green pumpkin. "Fingere Elementi. Finger-y Element-y." That didn't sound right to her, but she said it anyway. "FINGERY ELEMENTY." Dot jabbed at her pumpkin, but instead of making it rise up and change into a planet, her wand snagged on the plastic and melted a hole right through. The sand slipped from the hole in a steady stream, a powdery snake piling on the floor in a glittering verdant pile.

OOPS.

SHE DIDN'T THINK SO. Magic was so hard

Not long after she had spoken to the professor and whilst she was busy distracting herself by twirling her planet around and around with her wand, Layla’s attention was drawn to the voice that was shouting her name.

She frowned in response, dropping her wand so that the planet stopped twirling and wouldn’t follow her every move as she wandered over to her dormmate who was apparently struggling as much as she was. She sighed inwardly before standing next to her desk and staring at the mess of sand she had made. “Nice one” she resisted the urge to smirk. Eden was a bit insecure she had determined and making her feel bad for doing something that Layla did as well would be a little too malicious and cruel for the Ravenclaw.

“I ain’t much help really. Took me a couple of tries and my planet ain’t particularly..” she glanced at it across the few seats that were between Layla’s desk and Edens. “..Well it ain’t perfectly round lets just say that.” But she would help her because she had finished and was waiting for everyone else anyway.

“So all I did was concentrate on sayin’ the words real clear” she informed her. “Cos we both have accents I don’t think we pronounce the spells right sometimes.” Or it could just be her but it had helped the blonde to complete the spell so who knew, it could work for the brunette too. “And just jab your wand quite sharply at it but not too aggressive cos you’ll make a mess.” Was this even useful advice?

“Try it again.”

Alright time for activity time! Kace loved the activities Professor Airey had in store for them. So he needed to get a bag of his house color? Not a problem. He went up to the front of the room and got the bag with yellow sand it since he was a Hufflepuff and Hufflepuff's were yellow. Uhhh duh! Next as he looked at the board he noticed he needed to perform a charm. He went back to his seat and got his wand out of his robes and lightly placed the sandbag on his desk. He squinted and saw he needed to go a slight jab at the bag. He didn't wanna put holes in the thing.

He got his wand into the casting position and said, "Fingeri Elementi!" but then nothing happened. Maybe he said it wrong? He looked at the board again and realized he pronounced it wrong. Ah woops.... He got into the casting position again and said, "Fingere Elementi!" and then it came out fine! He noticed it looked like a yellow planet. A job well done. He waited for the next set of instructions.

NO. No no no no no. Thornton rested his forehead on the desk. Not more spells. He could feel the ball of panic starting to form in his stomach, much faster than the wobbly lumpy ball of planet. He tried to swallow, but his throat was dry. His palms were clammy and he squeezed his eyes shut tight.

Oh. May want to. That means DIDN'T HAVE TO, right? RIGHT?

He lifted his head a bit and opened his eyes to peek. Most didn't look to be practicing the spell. He breathed a sigh of relief, but when he saw his lumpy, misshapen planet, his heart sank again and he buried his head in his arms.

Leave it to Tobes to have a super innocent answer to Flamsteed's question about how to demote the earth. It put Sophie in a good mood, and even though suddenly the professor was hitting them with a long spiel of information all at once, Soph was happy to keep up with it today in her note-taking. It helped that it was all really interesting information, though, but as soon as she found herself feeling sorry for the dinosaurs, they were all set to move onto an activity.

Just when it was getting good.

The activity seemed easy enough, though currently didn't make a ton of sense to Soph yet as to why they were doing this, but she supposed it would all come together in the grand scheme of things. On her way over to pick up a bag of blue-colored "sand," she murmured, "Fingere Elementiiii," to herself, not too keen on memorizing it for future use - since she wasn't sure she'd ever need such a spell in the real world - but focused on saying it correctly. Not that it was all that hard, but it didn't hurt to work at making sure she didn't stumble over syllables anyway, right?

"Fingere Elementi," she repeated once more, back at her seat with her little plastic bag in hand. Still seemed like an easy enough spell, so she'd just get right to it, then. Flicking her wand from its arm holster, Sophie was brimming with confidence as she jabbed her wand at the little bag in her hand and cast, "Fingere Elementi!"

Not at all to her surprise - though it absolutely should have been - the bag floated upward in her hand, immediately started spinning like a top, and POOF!

PLANET. Or... a good imitation of one. On her first try. Lucky.

"Locomotor planet," she grinned as she kept her wand pointing at the floating blue spherical body and turned in a slow circle, letting the planet revolve around her as she spun. HEHE. She suddenly felt very important, too.

SIIIIIGH. Honestly. All her sand was on the floor, at her pumpkin was just an empty plastic mess and she had no planet. This was rubbish. HEAR THAT, PROFESSOR? RUBBISH.

In a move she'd perfected at the Start of Term Feast, Dot slid out of her chair and splayed on the floor with her head and shoulders shoved under her desk and her legs trailing out behind. Wand pointed at the mass of sand, Dot just frowned ferociously at it and willed it into a planet.

That didn't work. Maybe she could try the spell again on her pile of sand, especially now that she'd been listening to her classmates practice their own spellcasting. Not fingery elementy. "Fingere Elementi." Just like she'd imagined, the sand drew itself tightly into a spinning mass of green sand, pulling in tighter and tighter as a sphere began to emerge.

Or sort of a sphere? It wasn't as pretty and smooth and ROUND as Dot would have liked, but at least it wasn't a pile of sand on the floor.

Penelope had already completed her planet, so she had time to practice the locomotion charm on it. Focusing on the blue planet in front of her, she pointed her wand at it. "Locomotor planet!" Guiding the planet with her wand, she moved it around in front of her.

SPOILER!!: Thornton

Thornton Baines, embarrassment to the Wrexham Baines.

Was that Thornton with his head on the desk? Did he need help? Penelope made her way over to Thornton, trying to control her planet. Letting the planet spin without her control, she turned her attention to the first year claw. He had a planet. "Well done on the planet, Thornton. Do you need any help with the locomotion charm?"

Was someone.. oh.. oh they were. Thornton heard his name but refused to raise his head and look at the girl who had said it. Instead, he squeezed his eyes shut and mumbled into his arms.

"He said may want to, which means 'don't have to' so I'm not going to." Biiiiiig shuddery intake of breath. Thornton could feel the anxiety balling up in his stomach again and he bounced a little in his seat trying to keep it at bay.

"Please, kindly, go away," he whispered, never once having looked at the girl. He didn't want to see who it was, so he didn't have to be embarrassed running into them in the corridor. It was bad enough that they already knew who he was and that he couldn't manage even simple spells.

"It is, and I'm pretty sure Maggie over here can do it." Maggie is a brilliant girl. All of his Snakes are brilliant, yes? Yes. Ethan watched as Samantha made her blue planet move with another spell, and grinned at her. Cool stuff, but he's got priorities.

Now Maggie, come and make a planet.

And she had come up with the perfect idea to destroy the Earth and Professor Airey just didn't want to bring attention to it. That's what Heather was taking all the explanation about what would work and wouldn't work as, anyway. Because there were all the best elements right there in it: distraction and the actual plan. And a distraction disastrous enough that by the time anyone realized the real plan, it would be too late. Good plan. Best plan.

Now they were being asked to get some sand and make their own planet. Hmmm. She walked up and retrieved a bag of sand, one that was about the same shade of red as Mars, and took it back to her seat. "Fingere Elementi!" The smell of burning plastic assaulted her nose as the plastic bag melted away. But pretty soon, with a nice POP!, her planet had formed, looking like a mini Mars.

Now what?

For the record, we're completely against destruction, okay? Good. And she had seen Star Trek, and she'd seen Vulcan been vanished to nothing, and she didn't like it, yet thought it was very cool to watch. Minus flares, you know? While she knew that event was science fiction, black holes still exist. She would always recall this conversation with Flamsteed.

ALSO, NO, no yellow bags whatsoever. Are you mad? No, Professor Flamsteed, Lotus Acacia Wisteria took a green bag instead. She would've taken red, as a way of supporting her bestie, but she decided against it. She liked more Slytherins than Gryffindors, after all.

The seventh year was actually smiling now. The solar system activity had been her favorite thus far, and while they weren't going to do the same, she was kinda happy for this. Without further ado she aimed at the bag, and with a jab motion said, "Fingere Elementi," AND... the bag was gone, followed by a perfectly round green planet floating about. GREEN. Green. GREEN.

It would've been nice to check on the ickles and see if anyone was having trouble with the spell, but lol, that wasn't going to happen. Dante was surely fine. And just because she could, "Locomotor planet," and with the wand still pointed at the GREEN spherical object, she moved it around, watching her surroundings closely.
