Elwood was going to be a guide. A trusty guide, very good. At which it made Tag smile, maybe too big. It wasn't hard to not trust Elwood, you know, she just had that look about her. Trusty guides were always good, and Elwood, that made the trusting extra easy for Tag.

But, now onto the actual part of divination. Books. There was a very quiet sigh from Tag. He didn't do too much reading. Unless she was referring to school books, which again, was the same thing, you know. Though, he'd give his best answer. "Sometimes books have deeper meanings than to what just the word is? Like, for example, the color white, could just be the color white. But white also have different connotations. White can be innocence. Sometimes, things like that, symbols or colors, in the reading are repeated so that eventually some point will get across to the reader, audience." There's an answer for you, Elwood. Smile.

Tessa raised her hand, listening as other students spoke and ventured guesses about the subject. "Well, various forms of literature all have their different qualities to them," she began. "So a particular subject of a book could reveal a lot about a person," she gently touched her Quidditch book. "Although, just like a book, you can't judge a person by how they appear," she added with a grin. ""And just like a book, a person's life can take many different directions."

Problem with pretty female Professors? Sometimes when they spoke Ascanius was too busy looking at things to notice the question or even the context of what they were saying, yeah? S'like whenever she opened her mouth, the sixth year was...well, otherwise occupied.

Long story short, he completely missed her question and remained silent. Other people could answer. He'd just pretend he knew what was up.

As per usual.

Finally, class began. If Kevin had to puff his cheeks and let the air out one more time out of boredom he would have gotten up and left the room. Or attic ...tower...thing whatever this place was. He looked at his book on the table before raising his hand in to the air. "i heard about that some people open up their favourite book randomly and do some divination stuff on the first sentence their eyes fall on" probably not the answer she wanted but whatever.

She did however come back to in time to return the various greetings directed at her, graciously except the tasty treat from her Captain, and to giggle lightly at the one girl's request to have class somewhere else next time. Silly girl, this was the Divination Classroom.

But not all the things that had happened as she sat at her desk had been kind and happy. As Callie busily made a point to smile and greet each student she heard a sort of ruckus going on and some raised voices. It took her a few moments to pinpoint the culprits but apparantly it was someone from her own House who seemed to be causing the trouble. "Miss Colbert, please. Have you not read the Divination Classroom rules? We are to treat each other with respect in here but also everywhere else at Hogwarts." She gave her a stern look and then looked to the other kids she had been talking to. "It is of no concern to you as to why your classmates have chosen certain books and you will definitely not be rude to them for their choices. I'm the Professor and I made the request. I will be taking five points from Ravenclaw to ensure you remember your manners." Really, one of her Eagles would act that way with her present?

Now to move class along. It had been postponed long enough. She shook her hands and cracked her neck to relieve some of the flustered-ness she was feeling and then stood to address the class. "Welcome everyone to Divination. I'm glad to see those of you who have taken my class before returning and happy to see many new face. I'm Professor Elwood and I hope you are all ready to take a trip into The Beyond but don't worry I will be your trusty guide. We are going to go ahead and get started now with a quick question." One they had all probably been wondering themselves since they had arrived or had seen the SNAC assignment if they were members.

She grinned at them quickly before continuing. "What do books or forms of literature have to do with Divination?" Anyone know?

Emma nodded, placing both hands under her chin as she listened to the professor's words. Sure, this wasn't her most favorite of classes - but she could deal with it. And then came the question about books. She'd been wondering why they had been told to bring their favorite. Emma smiled up at the woman when called upon. "Well, I suppose they have something to do with divination because a lot of books and literature use a lot of foreshadowing...?" She wasn't sure, but sometimes it was nice to be able to take a guess..

TakemetotheBurrow 01-22-2014 11:57 PM

Bibliomancy.

Ella had come across that once or twice in her reading and she was inclined to believe that this was probably what they were doing and where Professor Elwood was going with the whole book thing. But hmm...there was something else she'd come across, right? St-something. It was... ... ...OH!

"Professor, is that similar to Stichomancy? I think that has to do with lines in books as well." Maybe it was the same thing, then? Ella wasn't sure. She did remember reading that term, though.

Bart sat down with his eyes glazed over, books. Why were they talking about books and in a class that was so long to begin with. He could hex his mother for making him take this lame class. He put a hand on his desk and rested his head on it. This was going to take forever and his head was hurting. As his hand sat on his chin he started feeling something.

What was this?

He rubbed his face. He was growing facial hair? He had hit that time in his lifeto grow facial hair. He knew it could be whenever now he got the talk from his dad over summer, but still he was growing facial hair. THAT WAS SO COOL! He wasn't hiding this like some people nope boys. Uhhh...well, they had a Divination textbook. Did that count? It was a combination of books and Literature, so in a sense, it did answer the question. Sophie had a feeling that wouldn't go over too well with Elwood, though, so she tried to come up with something a little different.

Raising her hand, she said, "What about asking a question and then using a random line in a book to see if it answers the question?" She thought somebody else had already said something similar, but this was Sophie's opinion, too.

Kace was dazing again in this class from the perfumes. He was then hearing the professor talk and he snapped out of it. He heard the professor ask a question. She asked about what does literature have to do with divination. Kace gave an answer. He raised his hand quietly and said,

"Professor i think when authors create worlds in their books, they predict what the world is going to be. Then the people who read their stories really believe in it." This was Kace opinion, but he could be wayy off but this is what he thought.

Mo grinned at Vesper as she took a seat beside him, giving her arm a squeeze before Professor Pretty started talking to them. He wanted to know what book Ves brought with her... he wanted to know what everyone had with them, honestly, but maybe the book selection was deeply personal.

"I suppose the books we chose to bring with us tells something about us too, right Professor?" Hmm? Approval, please? For this boy?

rosebub6200 01-23-2014 07:13 PM

Robin thought for a moment- she had actually been wondering that question herself, what did books mean in divination? She thought again, well they were asked to bring a book that meant something to them so...maybe that was it? She raised her hand a little

"Is it that a person's favourite book can tell you a lot about them? So then you can more accurately tell more about them and their personality which affects divinity like what their future is and stuff.".
She guessed going on a hunch.

But then she'd kind of stopped daydreaming and told off the Ravenclaw and everything, and that made Tobias feel a bit happier. Justice and all that, y'know?

When the lesson started and the first question was asked, Tobias sat and thought and absentmindedly thumbed at the corner of his book, flipping through all the pages in a few moments. He though about saying something to do with 'truth', because of the SNAC assignment, but settled on another idea, even though it wasn't actually an answer, and raised his hand.

"I don't know," Toby said simply, and lowered his hand again. But that wasn't it, he wasn't done. "But I reckon that everything ever has something to do with Divination, somehow, so it doesn't surprise me that books have something to do with it. But maybe it's got something to do with how people say you can learn a lot from someone by knowing what they read."

Professor Elwood wasn't happy at first with the Hufflepuff's answer. Why would he even raise his hand? Ah, but he wasn't finished thinking--apparently boys his age had minds working faster than bodies. Hormones probably.

"Interesting points Tobias. Divination does have a very wide spectrum of types and methods but I really like your second thought about how you can tell a lot about a person by what they read." She nodded quickly. "Very good."

That was Gwen's best guess at least.

"With the type of Divination we will be studying today, the books you brought will help shine a light into at least a bit of your personal futures." Good job Gwen. Callie was happy one of her Eagles was one of the first to speak up.

And when he'd looked at his face in the mirror this morning (something he found himself doing more often) his face appeared to have some weathered overnight it seemed.

He raised his hand, and in a slightly louder than was required voice said, Professor, I think there is also some wisdom to be sought from books. Even great books of fiction share truth in them.

Wise words. "Excellent point on truth. Just because a work is one of fiction doesn't mean that there aren't truths hidden inside its pages. Authors do that to comment on society or things they face themselves as to distance themselves from those things." Absolutely right.

"Uh, thanks Professor," he mumbled. Did she have to do that in front of everyone!? It was so awkward.

Nonetheless, he did have a less embarrassing answer to share. "..well, maybe it's not your future it's going to reveal," Lucas said, because he thought that was a bit ridiculous. Actually, a lot ridiculous. "Maybe it just sort of is like a chapter of who you are. What you think like. Uh, yeah." Pun.. intended?

"Of course," the Gryffindor seemed hesitant to answer but the blonde couldn't tell if it was from the scene that had happened before class or him wrestling with his thoughts on the question. "these readings you do today using the books you've brought won't tell you a concrete layout of your entire future. Few if ANY form of Divination can do that." She was a practitioner for sure but people were just too unpredictable.

He closed his book, grinned at the illustration of Jake morphing to a lizard on the book cover and turned his attention to the Divination lady.

So, what was the link between the two? Ummm. He was not sure but Adi raised a hand, anyway. "They tell a person about what happens to someone in the future.'' Is that possible?

"Yes, in some ways they do. Thank you." The Hufflepuff received a nod for his response.

So really, her chastising had no effect, however the lost of points was unexpected and definitely not well-received. Adrienne pursed her lips and crossed her arms and legs, leaning back in her seat. There was a retort on the tip of her tongue, but she didn't want to get herself in any more trouble, so she kept silent and looked annoyed, ignoring the professor's next question, directed at the class.

Calista expected a retort for her scolding of the girl for her actions by the look on her face. But instead the Ravenclaw sat down and looked to be pouting.

At least she was quiet. She didn't want to take more points from her own House but she would be forced to do so if she made another scene like before.

Losing points and being taken points by your own Head of House must be a huge deal. Sad, really sad. Not that it's never happened in Slytherin before. That Gertrude-Genie girl lost like, what, 25? Yeah. No wonder why they were last in the race to the House Cup so far. Gotta earn 'em back.

Anyway... uhm. Yeah. Astrid pondered on the question. Didn't she answer that in the first ever SNAC assignment? Did she have to repeat it again? Well, if it meant earning more points then sure, she'd do it. Astrid raised her hand. "The books have a hidden truth and it's the reader's job to find out what truth the book has for you." Something like that. Well, not like she needed to say the correct answer. They were learning it for a reason, after all.

"Yes, I see what you're getting at." The Divination professor almost chuckled at the Slytherin's answer. She recognized the name from the stack of SNAC assignments she had received which were very similar to her opening question.

"You have to 'read'"

Read the signs and all that good stuff for Divination and of course you have to read the words in books. So Yeah.

Her Prefect.

"Thanks Mr. Barrington. Reading is definitely fundamental to the form of Divination we will be tackling today." She shook her head but smiled all the same. At least they were making progress. Because she SO didn't want to talk to Donny about cootie things now. Not like he said anything yet though, maybe he wouldn't. Wasn't like anything was happening anyways. OH! Thank Merlin! Class was starting, yay for no more awksies for now.

With a raise of hand, Abbi decided to actually answer. Then he raised his hand and answered,"Professor like the others have said it can be used for Divination and to tell one's future. There's a method called Bibliomancy. One takes a book, places it on its spine while thinking of a matter or question and then letting it fall open. The person then randomly looks for a passage from the open book, using it as an omen or message about the matter or question."

There was also Rhapsodomancy which used books of poetry instead, where the same method of divination was used. However, since he had already given his answer, Sander decided to leave that for someone else to suggest.

"Yes, great job!" Callie clapped her hands together after the Lion and Hufflepuff spoke up.

"Class Sander and Alice have guessed the topic of today's lesson. Bibliomancy, also known as Stichomancy pointed out by Ella, is the act of diving through books. We will talk more about the actual method here in just a few minutes." More apple chomping.

Good Merlin, the boy's hair looked especially ruffle-able today. Resisting the urge to touch it (which had unbeknownst to her, had been the go-to activity before class had started) Professor Elwood pointed an open had in gesture to the Head Boy. "Alec here, has a great question. What do you all say?"

She looked around the room, questioning look on her face. "Sacred or holy books such as the Bible and Quran were the first books to be used in Biliomancy. Now that we use other books for it as well, can you think of reasons why those used to be the popular choices?" Or was it just some strange vogue?

Tobias raised his hand again, a little more tentatively this time. Because this was bordering on history, and that was a weak spot of his.

"Well..." he began, weighing his words carefully before he said them. "I bet that aaaaaaages ago, for muggles at least, 'cause muggles do Divination things too... anyway, they used to have their books, like, written out by hand. And I suppose when books started being printed, they mostly printed what they thought was the most important books, like those ones. I guess what I'm saying is, it would have been practical as well as anything else. Because they'd have more access to that sort of stuff?"

There was also the whole spiritual meaning thing, but Toby wanted to stick to practical mumbo jumbo.

FireboltAvis88 01-24-2014 05:14 AM

Sander thought for moment. He had read somewhere the reason why the Bible and Quran initially for Divination. He raised his hand and hazarded a guess.

"Professor could it be because that both the Bible and the Quran, were considered sacred texts and the passages written in them were considered holy and truthful? Maybe people preferred to use them because they believed that the answers they received from their readings were coming from God himself." Sander replied.

"With the type of Divination we will be studying today, the books you brought will help shine a light into at least a bit of your personal futures." Good job Gwen. Callie was happy one of her Eagles was one of the first to speak up.

Wise words. "Excellent point on truth. Just because a work is one of fiction doesn't mean that there aren't truths hidden inside its pages. Authors do that to comment on society or things they face themselves as to distance themselves from those things." Absolutely right.

"Yes, in some ways they do. Thank you." The Hufflepuff received a nod for his response.

Calista expected a retort for her scolding of the girl for her actions by the look on her face. But instead the Ravenclaw sat down and looked to be pouting.

At least she was quiet. She didn't want to take more points from her own House but she would be forced to do so if she made another scene like before.

"Yes, I see what you're getting at." The Divination professor almost chuckled at the Slytherin's answer. She recognized the name from the stack of SNAC assignments she had received which were very similar to her opening question.

GOOD QUESTION.

Callie grinned brightly when the Slytherin boy said divination by letters and had to calm herself. "There IS a way you can do that...but we won't be doing it in class today." Unfortunately...

Her Prefect.

"Thanks Mr. Barrington. Reading is definitely fundamental to the form of Divination we will be tackling today." She shook her head but smiled all the same. At least they were making progress. Elwood hadn't forgotten the time a few terms back when she had to spray a much younger Nigel and one of his classmates with water to wake him up from a mid-class nap.

Oh they had a young existentialist on their hands.

"Interesting." Callie nodded slowly and tried to wrap her mind around the little Gryffindor's comment.

"Yes, personal choice of text does have a great deal of sway on a divining or reading." Good little Gryffindor.

Oh and there was a Tag. They still needed to have a staring contest rematch, although she wasn't ready to give up her title.

"Imagery and symbolism, at least that's what I think you're talking about, both are very important to Divination using books and texts. Thank you Mr. Kildare."

No judging, yes. Good. "Thanks, that was a great answer."

"Some people do, do that." Just like how all of them would be doing that today. Heh.

Smart Eagle was smart. "Yes, the literary idea of foreshadowing is similar to the idea of reading an aspect of someone's future through a divining method." Good job.

Head Girl comes in with a good point to add. Woo!

"Very good Miss Bishop. Stichomancy and Bibliomancy are used many times interchangeably. But thanks for mentioning that I had almost forgotten to add that bit of knowledge to today's lesson."

......

Not real?

He got looks.

The kid was young, yes, but that didn't excuse it. Did he go around telling Peirson that he couldn't make a teapot dance in Charms because that was the stuff of fairy tales or that Potions weren't important because he didn't want to taste any of them because he read once in a fairy tale that they were icky. No.

"Mr.... Maroon. I would hope that no one in this room would think that even though some do. But no, your classmates are closer to the mark on why Divination and literature share some commonalities." Queue another look.

Caleb's sister Sophie was on the money too.

"Yes, that technique is very common in forms of Divination that use texts." She received a nod for her answer.

"I can see what you mean comparing the author to the act of Divining." Good, good.

"Yes, they really do. Don't you think." Callie was happy Mo and a few others around the room brought up this point. She would talk more about that in a few minutes.

Again another great point she wanted to talk about in just a few more minutes. She nodded excitedly as the Gryffindor spoke. "Yes, yes, yes! Like I said to Mr. Branxton. You're right and I will be talking about that here in a few minutes. Thanks though." Big smile.

As more and more of the students gave great and some rather thought-provoking answers, Professor Elwood began to munch on her gift of an apple. It was rather delicious actually. Much like the deliciously awesome answers she heard next!

But first...another Puff has spoken.

Bay was about to raise his hand but pulled it quickly back down, he had to think more on his answer….. raising his hand again he said "Profesor…. because maybe they were the only type of books back then… like really old and in those days they didn't have book like we do, it was the only thing written in hand and written again. Due to their ages I think the muggles believed that they hold the truth in their words and they follow it." he hoped that he didn't sound too silly.

WhittyBitty 01-24-2014 05:20 AM

Lux had never heard of using books as Divination before, so this was rather interesting. Having no real knowledge of the subject, she decided to wing it and try for the best. Raising her hand, she said, "is it because those books are so wide spread? They would be easy for people to get a hold of. They are also very important to people, because they are sacred. I believe the Bible was the first book printed on the printing press after it was invented... so that means it is VERY important!" She honestly did not know much about the Quran, but assumed that the same applied for it, since it was another holy book.

Obvious wasn't it? Most books back in the day had been hand produced, by scribes and all that, huge undertaking and therefore only important stuff was written out and bound. West shot a little smile at Alice and then looked at the professor again as someone said something about the bible being first. Not exactly. The Jikji was the first that still existed at least in part. Definitely one of those sacred text things though and all that. In essence it was about using what was available though.

Kind of funny when you thought about it since a bunch of people what followed the teachings in those sacred texts would probably get all up in arms about it being used for divination. He smiled a bit but kept his mouth shut and his eyes fixed on the professor.

Casey O 01-24-2014 05:44 AM

Stichomawhaaa? Marigold liked the idea of bringing books to class, and had brought Lord of the Flies, a favorite of hers, but doing Divination with it?She thought for a while. Hmm... Holy books...

And that was not just aaan expression of surprise.

"Maybe it was because so many people believed in them and thought they were magical?" she ventured.

AND THEN SHE STARED AT WEST.

Presley Black 01-24-2014 05:46 AM

Um, no. Because reading those weird books took forever and made her brain hurt. She couldn't imagine trying to do divination through something she didn't understand. "Maybe there just weren't very many written books back then?" she offered with a shrug, setting her hand lightly on her copy of St. Exupery's The Little Prince translated into English of course. Gwen didn't speak French, she was American.

"Or maybe people thought that sacred books were better at telling the future?" Because she couldn't imagine how a book like the terrible Twilight could be used to tell any future. Unless that future included staring constantly at a gorgeous person and beating yourself up for being just pretty-ish. Because as she understood it, that was pretty much all that happened in those books.

"Probably because those were the books that were the most handy." As in people could actually access those. "Although I suppose a lot of people weren't personally reading them for Biliomancy because they just couldn't read." Flat out. So, other people read it for them. Interpreted it for them. Yeah?

With her index finger, Schuyler traced over the title's lettering on the cover of her Whitman book while she listened to her classmates answer as well. Similar answers. Good answers.

Mhmmm.

lemon 01-24-2014 06:02 AM

Oh, she answered right? Then Alice was just going to sit this next discussion prompt out. That was enough participation for one lesson, yeah?

'Cept she did have questions. Hand up. "I've read about another form of Divination, ma'am. Rhapso-something?" She could have just added a 'mancy' to the end of that, but there were probably another few letters in between somewhere. "It's used with poems instead of book passages? Are the steps to that virtually the same? Why don't poems fall under Bibliomancy too, if they're still a form of literature?"

Now she could just sit back and listen to this sacred text discussion... or she could flip open Anna Karenina, 'cause she really didn't give two knuts about Divination. No offense to Elwood. Ahem.

Deezerz 01-24-2014 06:06 AM

As she'd anticipated, she'd gotten a bit distracted with her book. It was just so GOOD. So many facts and charts and information and... Stop. She was in class and she needed to pay attention. Beverly already anticipated this wouldn't be an easy subject due to her tutors's reports. But that may had been because she predicted their eminent death in all forms of divination.

Meeeh.

Thinking about the question she debated whether to answer it. So far, in all her other classes, she has not been taunted or looked down upon for an inaccurate answer, but that fear always lingered whenever she raised her hand in the air. But she needed to take some chances, yeah? Besides, it wasn't like she's never read about this stuff before. Dear Merlin. She didn't even remember WHAT she's read about it. GAAAH.

Bev consoled herself by telling herself this was just an opinion. If the professor had wanted genius answers then she wouldn't be in a classroom filled with teenagers. Hesitatingly, Beverly raised her hand.

"Erm, they could have been popular choices because 'important/influential' people helped write them," she said, her voice marred with a small tremble. Don't lose it, man. "Or like...um, prophets and such." Gah! IT MADE NO SENSE. CAN SHE GO NOW.

Poolicious 01-24-2014 08:53 AM

First, Alec was sitting next to him and the next thing he knew someone was throwing papers at the. Alice. He should have known. Snort. The seventh year was about to ask her to stop when the Slytherin Captain came and sat down next to her. Messer was about to turn back around when he caught Alec gives Alice sticky-out tongue look. Chuckles. Mature. Very mature Summers.

Then the Professor started the lesson. Oh look first question. Huh? What? What do books or forms of literature have to do with Divination? Yeah. He didn't know about that so he just gonna passed the first question and listen to his fellow classmates answers.

Bibliomancy? That's what they gonna learn today? Okaaaayyyy.

Why they used sacred books? Hmm..He thought for a moment before Messer raised his hand "Maybe because they believed sacred books hold the truth?" He offered.

Mell 01-24-2014 08:58 AM

Well he probably should have brought a different book. He wasn't sure how he was going to do any sort of divination with his current choice. Oh well. He raised his hand to answer the question. "Because they're non fiction books. They supposedly hold the truth."

Lexers 01-24-2014 10:31 AM

Oooooh...OOOOH! What an interesting class this was going to be. Lucas wondered what a sentence-per-page children's book was going to tell him about himself. But nonetheless, he grinned.

"Was it because people believed these books to hold like, uh, greater truths?" Muggles believes in all sorts of crazy things, this was one of the less fanciful. "Like maybe these books were used because people didn't believe they were fiction?"
