Muggle Studies Lesson One (Electricity: Building Simple Circuits)
The classroom has been arranged into a style that might be familiar to those of you who have been taught by Professor Hadley before; there's several round tables, along with five or six chairs around the tables. Each table is void of any materials or props (for now).
Professor Hadley is seated at the front of the classroom, mesmerized by the pulling of a simple string on a lamp. Light on, light off, light on, ...
ooc:take a seat and keep chatter to a minimum. We'll begin shortly as soon as enough people arrived. Lesson has begun (semi). No entering the class, but please pretend like you've been here the whole time. Thanks <3
Lesson Progression
First Question: Introduction and what are different types of Electricity you know of?
Answers and Next Question: So what type of unit is used in electricity which determines how dim or bright a light bulb will be?
Sarah got the wire and then the cutter. It was pretty scary to cut things.. or so she thought. It seemed so permanent. Yet she never had a choice as her partner was just watching her. Maybe it was not so great to be in the know about these stuff.. as it all falls on your shoulders. Not that Sarah minded. How could she trust some of the people present with this thing. Sarah did not know how much an inch was. She looked around the clsssroom to see how much others were cutting off. Using that, she estimated her own things.
Chop, chop, chop. Great three even parts. Now the insulation part.. wasn't that dangerous. Oh right.. no battery conncted yet so she would get hurt. How much was a quarter inch? Sh elooked around again. Intelligence gathered she peeled off that amount at each end. Repeating the step as required, Sarah looked to see what was next on the list.
Connect a wire at the edge of the battery.. Now she needed her partners help for the securing time. Sarah told her partner to tap it while she held the wire at the positive side of the battery. "Thank you" she said when it was done. "We need to attatch that to the light bulb" she said, explaining it. She took the wire and held it with the right side of the light bulb socket and waited as it was duly taped. She then placed the light bulb in
Groups! Adi didn't mind working in groups. They could be fun. Sometimes, anyway. He glanced around the class. Who would want to work with him? Tobias had already approached Alec. He should get a move on this.
Then Adi caught Kace's eye and grinned. "Wanna partner up, Super Alien?'' Kace would know what that meant. Sure that his friend was going to say yes, Adi grabbed the copper wire and wire cutter and pushed them inn Kace's direction. "I think you'd better do that. Before I mess it up.'' Won't want that now, would they?
Kace was sitting at his desk till he noticed Adi was coming his way. He asked him to be his partner. He smiled and said, "Sure we can!" and then he sat down next to him. He handed him the copper wire and wire cutter and then he said, "Alright i will do the first step but you gotta do the second step." he grinned. He check his notebook to double check.

Steps:
1. Use the wire cutter to cut the copper wire into three relatively even pieces. About 6-8 inches long.
2. Remove about quarter of an inch of insulation at each end.
3. Attach one wire to the positive side of the battery and secure it with electrical tape.
4. Then attach the other end of wire one to the right side of the light bulb.
5. Get another wire and tape it on the negative side of the dry cell.
6. Attach the other end of wire two to the left side of the switch.
7. Get the last piece of wire and wound it to the right side of the switch.
8. Finally, attach it to the left side of the light bulb.
He had to cut them evenly and about 6-8 inches long. Good thing he had a ruler in his bag. His mom made him buy one before he went to school. I guess it was good for something. He took it out and measured 7 inches. It was in between which is a good thing. No harm done right?
He marked the copper wire with his quill so he knew what to cut. Then he measured them evenly and then he cut them with his wire cutter. SNAP! SNAP! SNAP!
Then he was done....He did it! "Alright Adi now it is your turn!"
This was the part that she hated... working with others. She knew that she and Laura had their problems in the past, but she also knew that the girl was a muggle lover and that might just work in her favor this time. Instead of whining about not know what was going on (which she really didn't) she was going to use others to her benefit.
She walked over to the girl. "Hey Hyde, wanna work together?"
Laura was a bit confused as to why Hannah wanted to work with her, they hated each other right, so why was she being nice. "Might as well." Laura was really good at the subject but she might just accidently forget what she was doing just to make Hannah sorry.
Laura thought about it but then decided she wasn't going to lose marks for no one and so she was going to try and do her best and work hard and hope that Hannah was as good as she was with this sort of work.

Adi watched Kace at at work. It was brilliant using the ruler as a guide. "Great job, Kace buddy!'' he said when his friend was done. So far so good! Now it was his turn.
Taking the three pieces of wire, Adi used Kace's ruler to measure a quarter of an inch. After marking the wire, he carefully removed the insulation from each. "I'll start on the next step, okay Kace?'' He knew Kace would not mind. They made a great team. Finding the positive side of the battery, the first year attached one of the wires to it and then taped it down with a piece of the tape.
Next, Adi attached the next side of the wire to the right of the bulb. "Okay! I'm done. You can continue now.'' Grin. This was fun!
"Awesome!" he said as he watched the little firstie do the steps. He was doing well. "Good job Adi! We got this hands down!" he said encouraging the little guy. Then he looked in his notebook for the steps.

Kace got these steps down. He attached the other end of the wire to the right side of the light bulb. Then he needed more tape. He reached over took his piece of tape and taped it to the negative side of the dry cell. Then he looked at the last three steps and turned to Adi.
"Hey Adi you wanna finish the last three steps?" he asked him.

"Thank ya, Kace!'' Adi grinned. This was going quite well! The last three steps? Noooo problem! "Sure!'' He re- read the final steps. Simple as the others had been.
He grabbed the wire Kace had already attached to the negative side of the battery and attached it to the left side of the switch. With the last piece of wire, Adi now coiled it around the right side of the switch and finally secured the end of the wire to the lieft of the bulb.
So buzzers could be used! AWESOME. And Hadley had one? That he could use? DOUBLE AWESOME. Yeah, it'd be interesting to work with the buzzers instead, right? As long as the buzzers didn't sound like alarm clocks because... those were just annoying what with their constant ringing. He did grin, though, when he got handed a buzzer instead of a light bulb. Buzzer. Buzz lightning. Now he just needed a Woody and he was ALL set.
His grey-blue eyes flitted over towards the blackboard and he scanned the procedure. They actually had to cut the wired? That... wasn't going to be as hard as cracking open an egg, was it? If so, here's hoping that the person he was working with was good at egg crackin-- ... erm, cutting wires. And speaking of hi partner... OH HEY. BADGER BOOM! "Hey Tobias!" he said, grinning at the boy.
Also. HA! Buzz of excitement! BUZZ! Tobias was funny, did he know? "YEAH!" he said, a little too enthusiastically. But then again, this was Tobias. How can anyone NOT be enthusiastic and happy around the guy? "Ready to buzz on ahead?"
... He was terrible at this. Really. Poor Tobias.

Tobias snorted slightly in laughter and BOOPED Alec on the nose for that kinda bad pun. But YAY PARTNER OKAY COOL. He quickly set his parchment and stuff down on the table and turned to grab the things they needed for electricitying. Then, after hooking his foot around a chair leg and dragging it over to Alec's desk, he sat down.
"RIGHT COOL," he said enthusiatically, nodding at the items in front them both and adjusting them slightly so they were each in different places on the desk. "I'll cut them into the even pieces we need, then you can remove the insulation thingy, and then we can keep taking turns with each step, yeah?"
YES?
COOL?
While he waited for an answer, Tobias went ahead with the first step anyway. He took the wire and kind of folded it over on itself a couple of times and then cut it at the folds, leaving him with 3 pieces of wires that were about 8 inches long and pretty close to being even. Then he set them down on the desk in front of his buddy and directed a huge grin in Alec's direction, holding out the wire strippers for him to take.

But most importantly, wire cutters were fun.
She plopped down in the spot next to Elle Belle. No invitation needed, right?
She then got to work cutting and stripping the wire. When the first one was done, she handed it over. "You wanna tape this to the positive side of the battery with the black tape?" She'd pretend that was a question and not an order.

She threw (gently placed) the cutting tool down on her desk and crossed her arms. Normally she wouldn't ask for help here, and would just keep trying until she got it, but she didn't want to waste wire so she reluctantly said aloud, "I'm having issues. Please someone help me."

Had she moved too fast? She WAS going to define each of the items to them, but she didn't want to dumb down the class too much. BUT it seemed, judging from the four or five people who had these vacant expressions, perhaps she SHOULD have dumbed down the class more. Even if she didn't exactly define the items, she probably should have pointed out what each of the materials were. Though some she assumed were obvious, but clearly not.
"Thank you, Miss Edwards. Two points for that thorough relationship and explanation for how it works." Though she didn't actually say WHAT each thing was, just yet.
"Okay, so let's go over what each of the materials are. This one is your insulated wire, which you could see how it's got like a plastic covering around the metal." They knew what metal was, right? And plastic? "So you want to use your wire cutters," Hadley held that up. "To strip off about quarter of an inch on each end of the wire. If you look carefully on the wire cutters, you'll see after all the semi-circles, there's a smooth blade. Very sharp. You can use that cut your wire. Use the semi-circles ... one that is about the size of the wire, to pull the insulation off each end."
"The next step talks about the battery, or dry cell, which is the cylindrical shaped object. And if you look, one end has a knob and the other end is flat. Though batteries generally are marked which side is positive and which is negative, the side with the knob thingy is positive." Hadley picked up the socket and bulb next. "On your socket you have two sides. It doesn't matter which you make your right or left. But you're attaching the wire to these screws on either side. Two different wires, just to be clear."
"This is your switch. And you've got your electrical tape, and of course, your light bulb, which you could screw that into the socket once you're all done."
"I believe that covers everything on the list of materials, with what each of the items are and what they look like.... So now you should be able to complete the procedure as specified." Yes? Hopefully? Together they should be able to figure it out.

..... West shook his head. Nope. Sorry Sarah. That was assuming a lot there since most of that stuff he didn't really get what they meant so it was random words strung together in a sentence and all that. He knew what a light bulb was but all this circuit business? And wait, a network? But water didn't flow backwards, and she made it sound like the circuit thing made the electricity go back to where it started. Which was weird and hard to picture. And how exactly did one of those battery things work anyways? What was it made of? What was like.... in it that made electricity even happen? Why couldn't they just rub balloons on their heads?
He looked over at Ascanius. Uhh... yeah. West would just.... watch until Hadley gave him a book or something with pictures to work from.

Wait what? 2 points for that? But it hadn't even been helpful! West was frowning a bit. He listened though and examined the items....
.... then put his hand up.

Thank Merlin for Tobias being a good sport about his bad pun. He didn't know what he would have done if things had turned awkward and Tobias thought he was... not cool or something. He was definitely cool. Maybe. Not really. ... It was a sad life.
"Sounds like an awesome plan!" he said, sitting up a little straighter, "BADGER BOOM!" You know, to motivate the guy. Wasn't this what he said before he pulled off an impressive Quidditch move? And... Tobias was getting started? Okay! You go little dude! Alec would just... look to see what they had to do. And wait. Waiting was definitely something he could do.
Once the guy was done, Alec took hold of the wire strippers and the wires, giving the boy a simple, "Thanks, mate!" and a grin. Right. How much did they need to remove from the ends? A quarter of an inch? How much was that exactly? Maybe he could just guess? Hadley had written the word 'about' in that particular step. So maybe... maybe guessing was okay.
Going along with this, the boy held up the wire strippers and started stripping off about a quarter of an inch of the insulation from each end. About. Guesswork. All that mattered was whether or not it worked in the end. As each insulation was being taken off, the boy brushed it off to one side, as he would if he was rubbing something out with an eraser and the eraser shavings were getting in the way.
... "DONE!" he said brightly, holding out the wires to the younger Puff, "Your turn!"

Yeah.......Nigel was grasping at straws trying to follow Sarah's explanation and analogies. Nigel did get that electricity went through the wires and such. But the circuit and everything was lost on Nigel.
Merlin. Really. She got two points for that explanation. It like like the most long winded answer of electricity goes through wires and something about circuits. Still what was insulation? She did clear up what a dry cell was. Battery. Nigel understood that. So they were suppose to make a circuit, still not clear that, without magic.
All this stuff could be summed up as muggle magic. That is what Nigel would like to believe. Simple. The demonstration was nice. But a book like what West asked for would be much better. Could Nigel just read a book on this instead of actually doing it.
So..The Prefect cut the copper wire into three pieces. Now a partner who knew what was going on would be nice.

He knew what a light bulb was but all this circuit business? And wait, a network? But water didn't flow backwards, and she made it sound like the circuit thing made the electricity go back to where it started. Which was weird and hard to picture. And how exactly did one of those battery things work anyways? What was it made of? What was like.... in it that made electricity even happen? Why couldn't they just rub balloons on their heads?
He looked over at Ascanius. Uhh... yeah. West would just.... watch until Hadley gave him a book or something with pictures to work from.
Wait what? 2 points for that? But it hadn't even been helpful! West was frowning a bit. He listened though and examined the items....

Caleb was NEVER going to remember all this circuit stuff, so he quickly jotted down the procedure in his notes for easy reference.

1. Use the wire cutter to cut the copper wire into three relatively even pieces. About 6-8 inches long.
2. Remove about quarter of an inch of insulation at each end.
3. Attach one wire to the positive side of the battery and secure it with electrical tape.
4. Then attach the other end of wire one to the right side of the light bulb.
5. Get another wire and tape it on the negative side of the dry cell.
6. Attach the other end of wire two to the left side of the switch.
7. Get the last piece of wire and wound it to the right side of the switch.
8. Finally, attach it to the left side of the light bulb.
Ok, he had to measure out his wire. What was an INCH? Ugh he had to do CONVERSION and all that nonsense. He measured out one piece of wire, and then used it to cut out the other two. Alright, that part was easy enough. Now to get rid of that insulation stuff. How was he supposed to do THAT exactly?
He bit his lip and slowly began to cut away the insulation, trying to get rid of the bits around the wire without actually CUTTING the wire. Did muggles do this all the time?? So annoying!

Thank Merlin for Tobias being a good sport about his bad pun. He didn't know what he would have done if things had turned awkward and Tobias thought he was... not cool or something. He was definitely cool. Maybe. Not really. ... It was a sad life.
"Sounds like an awesome plan!" he said, sitting up a little straighter, "BADGER BOOM!" You know, to motivate the guy. Wasn't this what he said before he pulled off an impressive Quidditch move? And... Tobias was getting started? Okay! You go little dude! Alec would just... look to see what they had to do. And wait. Waiting was definitely something he could do.
Once the guy was done, Alec took hold of the wire strippers and the wires, giving the boy a simple, "Thanks, mate!" and a grin. Right. How much did they need to remove from the ends? A quarter of an inch? How much was that exactly? Maybe he could just guess? Hadley had written the word 'about' in that particular step. So maybe... maybe guessing was okay.
Going along with this, the boy held up the wire strippers and started stripping off about a quarter of an inch of the insulation from each end. About. Guesswork. All that mattered was whether or not it worked in the end. As each insulation was being taken off, the boy brushed it off to one side, as he would if he was rubbing something out with an eraser and the eraser shavings were getting in the way.
... "DONE!" he said brightly, holding out the wires to the younger Puff, "Your turn!"

The smaller Hufflepuff bounced a little on his seat, and then switched his position around so he was kneeling on it instead of sitting. Still being quite small meant that this wasn't too difficult.
While Alec was working on the wire, Tobias picked up the electrical tape and started pulling off strips a couple of inches long, using his teeth to cut them free from the reel and sticking the strips on the edge of the desk so they were hanging off, just so it was easier for both him and Alec to get hold of some tape when they needed to.
Ahhhh, his turn! "Thaaaaaaank you!" Tobias beamed, craning his neck to look over at the instructions, just to make sure he was doing the next step right

It wasn't too difficult, but Tobias wanted to make their circuit as neat as possible, and spent some time properly lining up the wire and sort making sure it was neatly taped up to the positive end of the battery, before setting it back down between him and Alec again.
"Batter up!" he said cheerfully.
While Tobias waited for Alec to do his part, he peeked at the list of things to do again, and glanced up at Alec. "While you're doing that, I'll lay the other stuff out so it kinda looks like how the circuit should look. All in order and everything." Yeah? Cool.

He DID notice the weird movement that had been coming from Tobias's side of the table, though, and he did notice the strips of tape that were now stuck there. Dude was smart! Yeah. This was likely to make things a LOT easier for the next couple of steps. Absolutely. "Anytime!"
While Tobias's went on attaching the wire to the battery, Alec picked up the roll of the electrical tape and looked at it carefully. ELECTRICAL tape! It was ELECTRICAL. They definitely hadn't used these back in primary school! If Alec remembered correctly, the teacher had used wires that had some weird crocodile shape at the end of it. Crocodile clips, were they called? Or crocodile wires? The point one, because the ends of those wires could be clipped to the ends of the battery and switch and light bulb holder, there was no need for electrical tape. So... well... this was quite fascinating, yeah?
... Huh? What? Batter up? The older boy hastily placed the tape back onto the table and looked at the battery. OH HEY! "Great job!" GRIN. Motivation was key and all. "Then we'd just need to tape everything down without the confusion? Good thinking!" Nod of approval.
"Thanks!" he said, reaching over and grabbing a strip of the tape, ELECTRICAL TAPE, and holding it up for closer inspection. Good. Yeah. This was sticky! He then lined up the other end of the wire, the one Tobias's had been working on, until it was touching the right end of the buzzer. He held it down in place with a finger and held the tape over. The tape was stuck on one end, his finger withdrawn, and then the tape was spread over until the buzzer and wire were safely attached. There. All good!
"You know... I think we're about halfway done with this circuit already," Because there were eight steps. And he'd just finished off number four. See? More maths and Arithmancy.

Those were all the sarcastic-intending words that came to Sophie's mind at the moment. She was lost as a goose, and it seemed like most others had at least gotten a good start on this circuit. Or whatever it was.
She sighed to herself then began casually looking around the room. Truth be told, she was hoping to find a Ravenclaw who still didn't have a partner. If anybody, they'd know what to do. ...but no. The room seemed fresh out of free Ravenclaws. BAH.
Sophie's eyes fell on her brother then, and she blinked when she noticed that it looked like he knew what was going on. Whaa--... How did--... Huh? Who cared how he knew all that, though---HE KNEW! Win. "Psst, CALEB," Sophie said. "Partners?"

Lex stopped trying to be a super genius getting nowhere and listened to the Professor's explanation. While the Professor spoke, she lifted each piece of equipment in line with the Professor's explaining and showcasing, just to better familiarize herself with this whole thing. Now that she got the hang of it Lex made an important decision, she didn't need a partner. The last thing she wanted was a potential idiot showing up and messing with her circuit that apparently would require a bit of work.
She glanced back at the wires then the instructions. She's already cut them into equal-ish pieces by herself--see? No partner needed--so now she just needed to remove the quarter inch of insulation from the ends. Good thing she knew what that was now, huh?
Very carefully, Lex began pulling the plastic off with the semi-circle thing like the Professor had instructed them to. It wasn't all that hard, she'd admit but she still thought it'd have been much easier with magic. Muggles chose the hardest way of doing everything, even the really simply things like removing this plastic. They must have taken forever and ages to get anything done.
With the wire now exposed she attached one end...to the...positive?side of the battery using electrical tape. Was that it? Lex glanced over at the instructions just to be sure. Good. Alright. Next was to attach the other end of the wire to the light bulb. Also not that difficult, she would admit.

Minerva smiled "Oh that's not to hard and it doesn't have to be a lot. It's just to expose some of the wire to put into different places." Minerva took the wire that had already been done and took the cutter/stripper back off of Tora. "See all you do is apply the pressure here and go around so it doesn't cut through the wire." She proceeded to do each one showing Tora exactly what she meant. Once that was done she looked back at her parchment. "Wire cut into three pieces, check." marking it off the list as she went along.
Looking she picked up the battery and by finding the little plus sign pointed. "Now the next step says we need to put the wire onto the positive side of the battery. So I'm going to set the wire on it can you grab the electrical tape and tape it?" Teamwork was really a great way to do things. Not enough hands was always a problem. Setting down the wire on the positive side Minerva waited for Tora to tape it.
"Sure!" Tora replied brightly as she went in with the tape, having to redo it once because the wire slipped. Although she understood everything that was happening here, she didn't find it easy at all, and even though she understood everything, she still checked the diagrams the Professor put up. Yup. It looked right so far. She checked the next thing on the list. Grabbing the next wire in one hand, she searched for the lightbulb with the other. Finding it, she brought the lightbulb up to her eyes so she could see how to properly attach the wire. There. She saw how to do it, but she couldn't understand why she couldn't get it to work. See? She got the concepts easy, it was just the putting them into action that was the trouble. "Maybe you should do this part Minnie," she surrendered the wire and lightbulb to the older girl. "Sorry, I can't seem to get it," she blushed and looked down, slightly ashamed that she had let the prefect down. At least she was trying.

Ascanius noted the entire exchange as he got his materials together to start building the circuit. Her supplies weren't as nice as the ones he had in the shop, but wasn't Hogwarts still broke or something? He couldn't exactly blame her for having less then ideal supplies.
Once he was all settled with his things, though, he noticed West had asked like four hundred questions and still seemed confused.
The boy had helped him out with pineapple things...the least he could do was help a brother out. So he waved him down, "You need help, mate?" He knew how to build these.

Nerida was never going to remember how to assemble this, so instead of having to continually look up and down she jotted the procedures in her notes. Okay first step was go up and collect all of the materials..
After returning to her seat with the materials she looked at what the actual first step was, and it was to measure her wire. One inch of wire, well three pieces.
She measured out one piece of wire and then used that piece of cut the other ones, because that was just way easier than measuring out the others was well. Okay so first one done... Next step was to get rid of about a quarter of an inch of the insulation at each end of the wire.
She slowly began to cut away the insulation trying to get rid of the bits around the wire without actually cutting the wire. She repeated this for each of the other wires on each of their sides and on the other end of the wire she was working on. Weren't muggle electricians the only muggles that had to do this?
So now she had to attach one wire to the positive side of the battery and secure it with electrical tape. Sounded easy enough picking one wire she attached it to the positive side of the battery and then keeping it steady she secured it with the electrical tape.

West still did not get it? What was there not to get.... STOP! Sarah was judging him.. after all he could not know EVERYTHING.. although he did come close. It was actually quite expected that he would not know that, as he never had to deal with electrical appliences on a day to day bases.
Then the Professor spoke up, and gave Sarah two points! She was over the moon. This was the first time she got extra points doing a lesson!
Oh back to her circuit..
Sarah picked up the second wire and held it at the other side of the cell, the negetive side. Following Sarah's instructions, her partner took over and Sarah got the tape and carefully tapped it together. Using the other end of the wire Sarah pulled it over to the switch, which her partner had put in place for her. She then began to wind the wire around the left side of it. She let her partner finish off with the winding as she got her last wire. She knew where to put that
