Default The Greenhouses: Herbology Lesson Two

Herbology Lesson Two

Though it's rather chilly outdoors, once you enter greenhouse seven, an enchanted tropical warmth washes over you and you may want to shed a layer of clothing, or two. In the centre of the greenhouse is a long oak table, with house coloured pots set up in a neat row along its length. Its a clear indication of what the lesson will entail. Professor Bentley sits on a stool at the far end of the table where she'll have a good view of everyone. Though, with her swollen belly, she looks rather uncomfortable on her seat...

The blackboard behind her reads:

SPOILER!!: Blackboard

Lesson Two

Herbology Plant Sale Preparation

Lesson Progression:

Gloves!
Collect Materials
Potting Umbrella Flower Seeds (edited post requirements)
Re-potting Fanged Geranium Seedlings
Potting Honking Daffodil Bulbs
OOC: The lesson has started. If you haven't done so already then please read through the Herbology Rules and Expectations and the SS Site Rules. All SS Board Rules apply. IC rule breaking will result in IC punishment, OOC rule breaking will result in OOC punishment.

Wait........what kind of plant had Bentley said these were?! HONKING Daffodils?! What?! Did they honk like a car horn or more like a goose? These were important questions, people! Anyway, shaking off her moment of mind blown-ness, Sky grabbed a final green plastic pot. Picking up her trowel again, she filled the new pot halfway, then plopped the bulb in, roots down. She did slightly wonder why the were planting when they were partly sprouted. Shouldn't they be in the ground?

Once she was sure she had the students' attention, she tapped the board and revealed their next instructions.

"With bulbs, it's important to do your research and find the depth that works best for the plant... however, when in doubt smaller bulbs are five centimeters and bigger bulbs are ten."

Taking a pot, Seren filled it halfway with soil, popped a bulb in and indicated on the side of the pot, how far she would fill it. "Have a go at that, and when you're finished you're welcome to clean your work space and may be dismissed."

OOC: Last one! Again, 3 posts. I will leave the thread open for another 24 hours. Thanks everyone!

Having already completed the previous steps, Dylan was ready to move on to the bulbs. Getting one from the bags going around, he set it to the side. They were keeping on with the house-colored pots, yea? So, after securing yet another green pot, he put it front and center...

Oh...and he'd almost forgot...

Pulling his notebook and quill over, the Slytherin quickly jotted the new instructions down. He liked this way of doing things. That way they had all the steps right in front of them and knew how to set up things accordingly. Very thoughtful of Professor Bentley...who was still waddling around. She was still hot. That hadn't changed.

SPOILER!!: Dylan's notebook!

Herbology Lesson II: Plant Sale Preparation

Plants Available
  • Umbrella Flowers
  • Fanged Geraniums
  • Honking Daffodils

Planting Seeds
  • Prepare the pot by filling it 3/4 of the way with potting soil.
  • Add a sprinkle of fertilizer.
  • Drop in the seed.
  • Top with soil.
  • Water the soil (not to the point that it becomes muddy).

Re-potting Seedlings
  • Prepare the pot by filling it 3/4 of the way with potting soil.
  • Remove the seedling from its previous pot by gently massaging out the contents from the bottom of the pot.
  • Place in the pot and fill the potting soil around it.
  • Pat it down so it's secure, but not suffocated.
  • Add a sprinkle of fertilizer.
  • Water the soil (not to the point that it becomes muddy).

Potting Bulbs
  • Prepare the pot by filling it 1/2 of the way with potting soil.
  • Take the bulb and place it root down into the soil.
  • Fill the potting soil on top until it is covered. Bulb depths will vary depending on type. Honking Daffodils require approximately 10 cm below soil level.
  • Do not pat down the soil as this will restrict movement upon germination.
  • Add a sprinkle of fertilizer.
  • Water the soil (not to the point that it becomes muddy).

After updating his notes, he got to filling the pot with soil. She'd been specific about doing it only halfway...So, after a few minutes of scooping soil, the task had been completed...and he was moving on to the next thing...

It was bulb-time. Picking up the little bad boy, he noted it's size. The smaller ones needed about 5 centimeters and the bigger ones, 10 centimeters. The one he'd selected was on the bigger side...So, after dropping it into the pot, he went about measuring about 10 centimeters up...

That was right, yes?

Sarah looked at the objects of the calico bag in front of her, she did not have time to think however as the teacher soon continued. They were doing more work! She took off her gloves again and copied what was on the board, still listenening to the teacher. She looked up in time to see how much she needed to put in the soil up to.

Sarah then added the side note about the depths of the soil and how it depends on the bulb. Finally she was done so she put her writing implements away.

She took another pot and filled that with the soil from the bucket. Whens she had originally filled the bucket with the soil she did not realize how many pots she was going to fill with it. Thankfully it had lasted though

As he'd already decided that his bulb was bigger than most of the others he'd spied (SMUG!), Dylan guessed that meant it needed to be 10 centimeters deep. Yep, just using some of those keen observation skillz to get stuff done....like a BOSS.

Checking the roots and making sure they went down into the soil and weren't at weird angles, he began carefully adding the top soil...Due to the expertise in Potions, it wasn't too difficult for him to tell where exactly the 10 centimeters ended. It was an exact mathematical measurement...Therefore, Dylan had it covered.

Once that was taken care of, the Slytherin checked his handy dandy notes again...and was glad he did, too. Dylan was just about to pat the soil down as he'd done with the two previous plants....when that would apparently restrict movement upon germination...

That was almost a big OOPS.

Ahem...

So, yea...Avoid patting the soil down!...What was next?

While waiting for the next set of instructions, Kat placed her planted Umbrella flower seeds aside with her newly repotted fanged geranium seedlings beside it. On the other side was the pot of soil and fertiliser. Yeah, she wanted her work station to be neat, tidy, and orderly. Once Professor Bentley added the new notes on the board, Kat took our her notes again and began adding the new ones to it.

Honking daffodils. Those were interesting too since they obviously honked and made sounds. Although Kat didn't know what people wanted with them if they were sort of disturbing with its noise but oh well. Herbologists probably liked them and would use them for research purposes and collections of plants and stuff. Yep that.

The only steps left for Jory to complete were adding fertilizer and watering the bulb. He picked up a handful of the fertilizer in his gloved hand and sprinkled it all around in the pot. Then he grabbed his wand and held it over the pot. "Aguamenti!'' Water flowed from his wand. "Finite!'' Good. Not muddy. Annnnd he was done!

Jory returend the left over fertilizer and potting soil. He cleaned up his workstation, removing all the debris. Finally, he organised the pots neatly and replaced his stuff in his bag. "Great lesson, Professor,'' the badger said before he left. "Until next time. Oh and bye Professor's baby.'' Grin.

Almost finished!

Dylan scanned the notes again, pleased to see only TWO steps left. Easy steps, too. Fertilizer and water...and then BAM.

Pulling the fertilizer!pot over, he quickly went about pinching the substance between his gloved fingertips, moving it over to mix with the top of the soil. He repeated the procedure a few times as he hadn't been able to gather that much of the fertilizer between his fingers...for whatever reason. Once he was confident that a 'sprinkle' had been added...it was time for water.

...Meaning another SILENT!Aguamenti spell. Yes, Dylan was already pleased just thinking about it.

Busting out his wand, the Slytherin quickly began doing his focus/concentration thing. It was a mere thought...and then the water started to spray out the tip. As a rule, he capped the water (like he always did) and carefully started watering the soil. It took a minute or so...because anymore than that would've probably drowned the bulb and it's roots. That would've defeated the purpose of all this work...So, yea.

"Finite!"...which was vocalized because Dylan didn't know how to do that one nonverbally.

...and he was finished! Grinning at those in his immediate area, he quickly began cleaning up. Early dismissal!

Then Sarah looked at the rest of the things. She chose ta nice bulb, one that was just perfect for what she needed. She placed that bulb with its root down into the soil. This was a different kind of stage to the one before, as well it was a bulb not a seedling.

She then looked at the next line of her instructions.
Quote:
Fill the potting soil on top until it is covered. Bulb depths will vary depending on type. Honking Daffodils require approximately 10 cm below soil level.
More potting soil? Coming right up. She took her spade again and began to spade in more soil. It would have been eaiser to use her hand, yet this was ore ladylike, not that Sarah cared anyway.

Soon it was covered and Sarah looked at at, cosiouly making herself think that her hand were tied behind her back as not to pat the soil. That was what she would have done on impulse

Now that his little fanged geranium seedling was sitting in its new pot, Ethan set about making sure its new home was cozy and secure. Humming a tune again, the boy used his gloved hand to scoop out a handful of dirt from his bucket and gently placed it in the flower pot and around the newly transplanted seedling. He continued in this way until the soil had filled in the gap in the pot around the seedling and had covered the top of the base.

Now that he had enough soil in the pot, Ethan gently patted the soil down all over the top and around the seedling, making the little plant secure, but certainly not too much to suffocate it. And now the fertilizer..

The next step Sarah left out, as she did not want to remind her hands that they were not allowed to touch the soil with a pat. She then got some more fertiliser and allowed herself to play with it a bit. Until she remembered the quicker she finished up the quicker she got to leave and therefore the quicker she got to the student garden to water her plants.

She sprinkled on the fertiliser just like she did before and then took out her wand and casted the water spell. She wondered what would happen if it got too muddy. Could one use the tergeo spell to reverse? "Finte" she said with a flourish and she put ehr wand back in its holster for a moment.

She took off her gloves and then her hand went back into her holster as she casted the cleaning charm on her gloves and of course her workspace (She was getting neater as time went on.

"Thanks for the lesson Professor!" she said. She then put her things away and headed outside to the student garden. She had things to take care of

So now they had to plant Bulbs? Wheww this class was going fast for Kace's taste. He looked up at the board, took off his gloves and copied down the notes for Potting the Bulbs.

SPOILER!!: Kace's Notebook

Potting Bulbs
1. Prepare the pot by filling it 1/2 of the way with potting soil.
2. Take the bulb and place it root down into the soil.
3. Fill the potting soil on top until it is covered. Bulb depths will vary depending on type. Honking Daffodils require approximately 10 cm below soil level.
4. Do not pat down the soil as this will restrict movement upon germination.
5. Add a sprinkle of fertiliser.
6. Water the soil (not to the point that it becomes muddy).

So he needed to prepare a pot by filling it with 1/2 the way with soil. Alright so he got some more soil from his bag and then put his gloves on, and patted it down half way. Then he took a bulb and placed it root down in the soil.

He wiped his forehead yet again to get rid of the sweat.

Another task. Nodnod. Time to update the notes, yeah? Yeah.

Scribble. Scribble. Scribble.

2. Add a sprinkle of fertiliser.
3. Drop in the seed.

2. Remove the seedling from its previous pot by gently massaging out the contents from the bottom of the pot.
3. Place in the pot and fill the potting soil around it.
4. Pat it down so it's secure, but not suffocated.
5. Add a sprinkle of fertiliser.
6. Water the soil (not to the point that it becomes muddy).

Potting Honking Daffodil Bulbs
1. Prepare the pot by filling it 1/2 of the way with potting soil.
2. Take the bulb and place it root down into the soil.
3. Fill the potting soil on top until it is covered. Bulb depths will vary depending on type. Honking Daffodils require approximately 10 cm below soil level.

Once that was done, Ella grabbed another yellow pot and began to fill it with soil. She monitored how much she'd added as best she could, trying to fill it as close to the half mark as possible. When she was finished, she went for the bulb.

...Where were the bulbs again?

Ohhh. There they were! Ella grabbed the nearest one gingerly, placing it root down in the soil. She tilted her head, checking to see if there'd be enough room to add the right amount of soil on top of it. If 10 cm was the general measurement used, she'd go with that one. Seemed like the safest way to go.

Now for more soil, right? Right.

Annabeth read attentively the next instructions. "Um potting bulbs...Honking Daffodil bulbs." She looked at the calico bags. Interesting, she thought. Well, let's work.

She took away the pot with the seedling to free her workplace, then grabbed a new yellow pot and filled it up to half with potting soil. It was when she noticed that she wasn't wearing her protective gloves. Too late! Her hands were dirty and she hadn't copied the blackboard yet. The girl took a deep breath, wiped her hands by rubbing them off on her robe. "Oh, great! I'll spend my free time at the laundry!" She said and sneered to herself, her good mood was vanishing. Back to her bench, she laid the yellow pot aside and took her quill and parchment. Boring to herself, she added the new instructions to her notes:

Ethan's fanged geranium seedling was almost successfully re-potted. All that was left was to add some fertilizer and to water it. Still humming the piano melody he was playing earlier, he picked up a small handful of fertilizer with his gloved hand and sprinkled it around the top of the flower pot, being careful to give the seedling some room.

Again, wanting to continue practicing his nonverbal spell, Ethan pointed his wand at the soil in the pot and concentrated, ceasing the humming. Focusing on Aguamenti, a stream of water was expelled from his wand, this time slightly firmer than it had been previously. Perhaps he was getting better at it.. He quickly stopped the spell once the soil was moist enough and before it got at all muddy. "All finished, little guy," he told his seedling with a smile as he gently set it aside. He would have liked to do another, but apparently they were moving on..

Oh they had another thing to plant. Minerva couldn't help but giggle to herself about the name of this one. Honking.. Oh this had to be a plant Ethan would love, she wasn't sure why, but she just figured it would be.

Going up and getting another house colored pot, she realized they had planted a ton of plants today, were they selling all these plants. Minerva thought about it a few moments and then decided she better get started. Setting down the new empty pot, she quickly grabbed her quill and wrote down the directions to this project.

Now to the first step, Minerva looked at the pot that had all the potting soil, she hoped that she had enough soil. Well only one way to find out. She began filling the empty pot with soil.

Once the pot was filled half way, Minerva then went and got a bulb. Looking at the bulb and then back to her notes she looked down in the pot. Maybe she should add a bit more soil. Once she had the soil at the point she wanted, she gently set the bulb down and eyed it in the pot. Yes she felt it was 10 cm below or at least close.

Just then she was distracted by something.. What was that, she turned and watched for a moment. Was he humming to the plant? Then she watched as her boyfriend spoke to the plant. Chuckling to herself she turned without really saying anything even though for some reason she found it odd, but adorable.

Glancing back up at the instructions Mika just nodded. That seemed like a good thing to know – for her bulb planting experience that is. Do not pat down the soil – that was good to know, and she was glad that Professor Bentley had told them not to. Otherwise, well, she probably would have patted it down.

She carefully soil. She did get her wand ready for the watering but she wasn’t going to do that just yet. First thing she did was make sure, again, that the bulb was at the very least ten centimeters below the soil level. It was, she already knew that…but she wanted to be very, very sure about it. After all – they were getting these bulbs ready for sale weren’t they? And she wanted hers to be the most robust honkingest Honking Daffodils ever.

Okay. Now that the bulb was in place, it was time to add some more soil to the yellow pot. Ella carefully began scooping the soil from her bucket, watching as little by little the bulb was covered. She'd done a pretty good job judging the space between the bulb and the top of the pot so she should be just around the 10cm mark in relation to how far down the bulb was from the top of the soil. She brushed her hands together when she was done, wiping the excess soil from her gloves. Right. Soil was finished.

It was a good thing the blonde had decided to check her notes before continuing because she was just about ready to pat down the soil. Phew! Instead she let the soil sit as it was, focusing on the fertilizer instead.

Muddy – nah she wasn’t going to give her bulb a mud bath…though she had heard about them in ritualistic beauty things…but she didn’t get that nope. She never understood the whole mud makes you pretty idea. Mud makes you dirty…yep – it also makes people want to vacuum drying mud off of you. Yep. That was the extent she really knew about mud – get muddy infront of a certain Claw and he’d vacuum it off of you.

She couldn’t not laugh thinking about it; because yeah, who wouldn’t laugh when remembering a time they were vacuum’d clean? Pointing her wand at the ground "aguamenti" letting the water pressure trail off a bit, and again aiming it at the flower pot until it was just damp and not muddy at all.

She just beamed, because in front of her sat three not-muddy flowerpots. YAY! She'd done it. She was so much better than she used to be at this.

She was nearly done, yeah? Grin. It was a nice feeling, getting to the end of a task. Not that this was extremely trying work or anything. Planting was actually quite nice. Ella now understood why her Gran liked to work in her garden so much.

The blonde reached for some fertilizer next, sprinkling it into the pot where her bulb was. Happy with the amount, she then reached for her wand. This little guy was going to need some water now, right? Right.

"Aguamenti."

She wondered if they'd be checking up on these plants often or if they'd be selling them soon. Actually, she had a lot of questions about the selling of the plants but she figured they could wait for later.

"Finite."

Were they done now or? She had some major cleaning to do. Her work space was quite messy. As were her gloves.

Last task and.. oh, honking daffodils? That was one of Ethan's favorites. Grin. He had planted many bulbs in his time, but he glanced up at the board anyway to take note of Bentley's instruction. He then grabbed another of the blue flower pots and set it in front of him.

With gloved hands, the boy began scooping potting soil from his bucket into the pot, stopping when it was about 1/2 of the way full. Well, that bulb needed to be 10 cm inside the pot and under soil.. Ethan knew 10 cm to be about one and a half of his thumb length, so he measured from the top of the soil to the top of the pot. That was more like two thumb lengths, so he added just a little bit more soil to be sure.

Then he gently picked up his precious honking daffodil bulb, eyeing it adoringly. "And I know you are ready for your new home too," he said as he gently set it inside his pot atop the soil. "Just like your little friends." Did he hear chuckling at his side? Ethan turned his head to look at his girlfriend and gave her a grin. Surely she knew how important it was to give the plants some love?

He was digging till the bulb was deep in the soil. Once he was confident and felt it was a good in there, Kace got the soil to the side and fille the potting soil on top until it was covered. He knew he didn't have a Honking Daffodil and he didn't have to dig 10cm below. At least he didn't have to get his fingernails more dirtier than they were. Then he remembered he needed his gloves on.

Woopsies...but the plant didn't seem to bite so he was safe for now.

He put his gloves on and then before he patted the soil.

He looked down at his notes and then he refrained his hands from patting it down from it can restrict movement. He only had two more steps to go. He could do this!

Now the Bulb was in the pot and it was hopefully exactly at the right place it should be. Now it was time to put more pot soil in. Making sure not to pat the soil down at all, she didn't want to hurt the bulb at all. Getting a little more distracted, because she was listening to the person next to her more, Minerva tried to focus. It was so hard though when she could hear Ethan talking to the plants. It was soooo cute seeing him in his element.

Now back to forcing focus. Minerva looked over her own pot, it looked as if the soil was loose, but just to make sure she fluffed it a bit. There was no way she wanted the bulb to be patted under any soil. Marking off that step she looked to see what was next.

And now bulbs? Mo set his second completed pot off to one side and quickly found himself a third nearly perfect pot. Yes, he'd love to seek perfection, but obviously there were a limited number of pots, and an even more limited number of flawless pots. Maybe he could make the slightly chipped rim work for him in some way.

Once again, Mo tugged the bucket of dirt from his work station and dipped his pot into it. Only half full this time, and Mo had way too much dirt, forcing him to shake the excess back into the bucket. Only when it was actually half full (not 4/10 or 6/10, as Alice would say) did Mo set the pot on his workstation and begin sorting through the bulbs.

Ah, perfect!

Kace was checking his last two steps before he was finished with the activity.

After Kace was finished NOT patting down the soil, he tried to find his fertilizer. He realized the fertilizer was on the ground near his feet. He picked it up and then bumped his head on the desk.

"OWWW!" Kace said rubbing his head. He did NOT see that coming. He was rubbing the bump on his head and then put the gloves on. He sprinkled the fertilizer on his pot. Then he needed to water them.

"Aquamenti!" Kace said with his wand pointing at the pot and then once it was finished he said "Finite!" then he was finished with the activity. His head was pulsing but he would get ice for it soon.

Almost done.. almost done!! Min checked over her notes only a few more things. Looking at the pot with the fertilizer, she realized that maybe she had gotten to much. Well she would see if it need to be put back once she was done. Taking some in her gloved hand, Minerva sprinkled the fertilizer over the bulb and around the soil.

Once she was done with that, Minerva pulled her wand and pointed it at the " Aguamenti" watching as the water left her wand, she watered the pot, but made sure not to get to much water in it.

When that was finished Min took her gloves off and pointed her wand around her workstation making sure the entire area was clean. Then she took the extra soil and fertilizer and adding it back to the original group. Cleaning both those pots she placed them back in the front.

Turning to Professor Bentley she smiled, " Professor, would you like any help cleaning up or taking all these pots anywhere?" She figured Bentley might need some extra help, because well she was pregnant and might not want to do as much or just need an extra hand.
