When not in use for classes, several of the greenhouses that are located on the school grounds are open for private and independent research and study. In fact, this is highly encouraged.
Within the unlocked doors of the greenhouses you will find rows and rows of plants. The greenhouses contain a wide variety of plants - both magical and mundane. Want to practice your pruning skills? Why not practice on the Abyssinian Shrivelfig of a Flutterby Bush? Or perhaps you want to harvest some Puffapod seeds- just don’t drop them! -- unless you want to of course.
Unfortunately the stores cupboard is quite bare. Under normal circumstances a variety of resources would have been at your fingertips, but it seems as though the items have been sold and pawned off. There are no seeds, or dung or meat scraps here, and there is only a single pair of large dragon hide gloves on a dusty shelf. If you borrow it, remember to return it.
Remember Professor Bentley likes to take regular strolls through the greenhouse to check on things. So make sure you wear your protective gear and behave yourselves accordingly.

NOTE: This is not an exhaustive list, it's just to give you an idea of what can be found in each greenhouse. Greenhouse 8 is restricted, locked and enchanted and may only be accessed with Professor Bentley. Any attempt to post that your charrie has broken in, will result in your posts being deleted.
Kommoto walked in the greenhouse early, but it seemed he was too early. There was no one here yet.
"Of course. Of bleedin' course." he muttered. He leaned against a table that held what looked like boil covered cacti. Some of them trembled at the disturbance, but nothing happened.
With a heavy bag full of items for class, Eliza shuffled into the greenhouse, expecting to be one of the last ones there. That always seemed to happen to her with Herbology, but to her surprise there was only one other student in the greenhouse. Did I read the notice wrong? Aren't Herbology lessons always in the greenhouses? Maybe they changed that too this year...
Cautiously, she crossed the room and sat her bag on a table a little ways down from the other student. No need to sit right next to him, since she didn't know him, but she thought sitting too far away might make her seem rude - which she wasn't - so she sat at a happy medium distance and nodded with a crooked smile to the boy. Just pretend you know what you're doing. You're older than him after all. Yep, this was the right place and she totally meant to be here this early. Absolutely. By the way, where is Bentley?
Tora was still a bit tired from the excitement of Astronomy the night before (and doing all her homework for that class that night as well) so she shuffled into the greenhouse. Until she remembered hearing about the man-eating plants from the year before. That jerked her awake for a second, or at least enough to realize that she was only the third person in. Mmph. So much for waking up early. She should have just slept in a tad more... but then again it was hard to sleep when she was so hungry. Tora had decided that she could only afford to go into the Great Hall and the dormitory once a day which meant that: a.) she had to carry all her books with her for the entire day (or find somewhere to hide them) and b.) she could only eat once a day (usually dinner, while saving some food for breakfast and skipping lunch)
Being the third person in the Greenhouse, Tora had her pick of where to sit. She noticed a boy that looked her age leaning against a table and Eliza from her own house sitting a little ways away. Now here was a predicament. Who should she sit and talk to? A student her age who could be a new friend or a familiar face? She paused at the doorway before smiling and waving to Eliza then walking up to the boy. "Hi" She said, figuring that if the boy didn't want to talk she would go over and sit with Eliza.
Eliza smiled as she saw Tora enter the greenhouse. But what was that? Her ears pricked at the semi-distant sound of chitter chatter. Oh! Her eyes widened and she shot up out of her seat and turned towards the other two students. "Shoot you guys, I think we're in the wrong greenhouse! Follow me, this way!" she announced excitedly and lead them to the next greenhouse over.

She just HAD to see a snargaluff. Like, it was necessary for her survival. Alice wanted to look through the plants in the greenhouses after class was over and find one somewhere, but it had just occurred to her that they'd probably in the restricted one. And people could only go into that one with Bentley, right? If she asked really, really nicely, would the lady take her in there? What if she got her cookies or something?
Snargaluffs! Who didn't want to see one?
She turned on her heel and began heading away, making more mental notes to catch Bentley and ask her later.

Herjenmie, with her robes in his beak, made an owl-like face that almost seemed as if he was daring her to bite him. He would always win when it came to biting. These humans were so silly to think otherwise, and this one was even sillier than the rest.
His hoot came off more irritated than anything when he finally accepted the fact that she wasn't feeding him anything. The eagle owl ripped into her robes before dropping them in defeat, spreading his wings, and flying off.
The ravenclaw girl had been running around hunting ingredients for Potions when she thought about it. Toadstools. They were used in potions sometimes right? And they had some in the green houses which was great. So she looked around and that was whens he noticed it.
Well, she had been in the wrong greenhouse first off, which that did help. But a large and rather robust Aloe plant was sitting there happily. So she walked up to it and using her wand sliced a section off of it. She knew it would heal - Aloe did that. Which was good, and it was just like pruning right. Putting juice into one vile and the remainder of the section into another she put them into her bag and continued trying to find more ingredients.

One more item and she was done. One, one, one. She was also heading towards Greenhouse one. She was going to get bubotuber pus to join what she already collected - unicorn tail hair, jobberknoll feathers, gillyweed. This last one and she can return to the classroom. A quick glance at her watch said she had as long as fifteen minutes more.
As soon as she had stepped inside Greenhouse one, the Ravenclaw's eyes instantly searched for the bubotuber plants. When she had found the squirming plants that looked like large, thick black slug, she propped open the cupboard. Her jaw dropped in dismay at what she saw inside.
Nothing. The cupboard was empty.
Well, aside from the pair of dusty dragonhide gloves that she borrowed and placed on. Merlin, she could really feel that their school was so poor now.
She wasn't going to dwell on these things as of the moment though, she had other things to worry about.
With a vial on the ready, Beezus approached the one of the bubotuber plants...one with the most swellings so she wouldn't have a hard time collecting its pus. She crouched down and patted it gently. "Hi...I'll be getting some pus from you, okay?" It wriggled in response. Beezus shrugged and went ahead, she corked open the vial and propped it against one of the protrusions and squeeeeeeeeeezed. "Ugh. Petrol." Because that was how the pus smelled like. Petrol.
Meh. She squeezed more and it filled half of the vial. Beezus wasn't contented though so she moved on to another swell and squeezed its pus out. Piiiiiiinch. Piiiiiiiinch.
And at last, the vial was full.
With that, Beezus closed the vial and thanked the plant. And then she cleaned the gloves off before returning it to its lonely cupboard. The vial, she tucked inside her pocket with the feathers and she headed out.

In his search of potions ingredients, since Lafay told the class to bring four ingredients to the classroom, Richard walked into one of the Greenhouses hoping to find something that could be used as a potion ingredient. Actually, almost all plants could be used brewing a potion yet of course you needed to know its uses and how it would affect the potion. Anyhow, Rich knew it very well that finding one or even more was not going to be difficult in here...unless, of course, the school had decided to sell the plants as well.
Carrying his bag, he walked among different kind of plants eyeing them as he passed by. He could not recognize some of them and could not be sure about some so he decided to leave them and go for something he knew for sure. It did not take much of his time when he decided that he saw one.
Aconite.
Opening his back, the Slytherin took his dragon hide gloves out and wore them before approaching the plant. Was not this also called Wolfsbane? Yeah, Rich Turner knew about this plant. He also knew the leaves were highly poisonous and mostly leaves and the root were used for potions but just in case there was some use for the leaves that he did not know, maybe Lafay would like brew poison, he decided to take an example of the whole plant. Carefully, he picked it and put it into a container that he also took from his bag before taking the gloves off and moving on to look for another ingredient.

Time was running out, she'd wasted a good amount of it just walking all the way out here but on the plus side, she still had ice-cream and it hadn't melted all that badly so she could still enjoy it on the walk.
The only time she stopped actively shoveling ice-cream into her mouth was when she stopped to slap on her dragon-hide gloves. Good thing they'd had herbology earlier and she still had them on her because walking up to the Common Room wasn't happening anymore than her going to the Great Hall was. She'd probably just show up and hope the Professor wasn't around to see her not using the protective gear.
And see, no Professor anyway, so she would have gotten away with it. But on to the plant.
She just needed some ginger roots. That wouldn't have been too hard to find in fact she walked right into them mid-ice-cream eating. "Here we go." She rested her cup on the ledge and got to extracting a few of the ginger roots. Just 4, she wouldn't be needing any more than that. After throwing these in a small, plastic bag she stuffed that in her bag as well, grabbed her ice-cream and took another look at her list.
Just one more thing to go.

Now Elise was running behind schedule and she meant it literally. She dashed her way from the Magical Creatures Stable thing all the way around the school and arrived at the greenhouse. Well, maybe if she hadn't wasted her time actually staring at the Augurey and waiting for it to vacate its nest, she wouldn't be. Now, she only had another 25 minutes left out of the 45 she had been allocated, meaning that she was left with 20 minutes to carry out her plan.
This was totally possible, she decided. Totally attainable.
Almost immediately, she spotted a small patch of beautifully tall lavenders and made her way over there. Her wand was pulled out quickly, a few blooms grasped just below their heads and the stems severed off wordlessly. That was three down, one to go.
Kace decided to get some ingredients from the Herbology Greenhouse. He even brought his protective dragon hide gloves. He knew he was going to need these. He was deciding which ingredient to get.
As he was walking around, he noticed some were restricted and did not want to even touch them. He saw toadstools and thought those shouldn't be harmless. Kace shrugged and went to get them. He tugged on them lightly but they wouldn't budge.
Huh...maybe pull on them tighter and use more muscle? Yeah that should work.
Kace pulled on them a little harder and they came right out. It almost came out like butter was attached to the ends.
Yay! Everything was going swell. He got his third ingredient for the lesson. He hoped this one would work.
Annabeth entered the greenhouses thumbing through her potions book to find another ingredient for her potions lesson. She was sure she would find something in the greenhouses. She looked from one side to the other without seeing anything that she could indentify. There were lots of weird plants there. Then she found in a corner one that she already knew: lavender. She took some leaves and tied them in a bouquet. There were no flowers at that time of year, but lavender are still lavender and the teacher would be happy by seeing that she had get it. The she went back to the dungeons.

And now for the final ingredient. She slipped into Greenhouse Three, scissors at the ready and keeping an eye out for purslane amongst all the other flowering plants. She finally found it towards the back. Figures. At least all the truely dangerous plants were locked in another greenhouse. Still, she moved through carefully and clipped a couple of the flowers. Placing them in a pouch and the pouch and scissors in her pocket, she hurried out of the greenhouse and started back to the potions classroom.

Haruka walked into the Greenhouse, looking for some more ingredients for her Potions activity. Dragonhide gloves equipped, she wandered through the various plants, looking for something that caught her interests. She stopped when she saw a plant with dark green leaves and black berries. The plaque next to the plant read 'Belladonna'. She recalls reading about this plant in her textbook.
She pulled a vial out of her bag and carefully crushed some of the berries and collected the juice. Not entirely sure if any other part of the plant was used(or if the berries were used at all), she also bagged some of the leaves for good measure.

Making a mad dash to the student garden, Peyton stopped for a bit to regain her breath. Maybe it hadn't been a good idea to stop at the kitchens for some ice cream. In her defense Peyton thought she'd find something there. Like a dead rat - or live one- in there. Instead she had come face to face with the MOST delicious substance IN THE ENTIRE WORLD. She HAD to have. There was no decision making in that.
After getting her fix she was finally here, green-gray eyes scanning for something useful in potions. Wondering deeper into the greenhouse her eyes spotted an interesting flower. It was pretty, so it automatically had Peyton's attention. Taking a reference book from her bag - she'd brought it with her - she looked in it for something familiar.
"Aha!" she exclaimed excitedly when she found it. It looked just like the plant she was looking at. It was a Angel's Trumpet.
Ooooh! It was dangerous apparently. Only if ingested. Still dangerous, though. She quickly took out a wide sort of phial - more like a jar - clipped the flower and deposited it into it. Then cut another one just in case.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
After leaving the student garden near the greenhouses, the Slytherin now entered the greenhouse to find more ingredients. With his gloves still on , Daichi grabbed his phoenix wand and pointed it at his gloves and clipper that he had used earlier. "Scourgify" he mumbled and waited until they were clean again.
He searched the greenhouse, trying to find an ingredient that the other students hadn't gotten already. His eyes fell on a plant though he did not know which type it was. Good thing he had brought his school bag with him~
He opened his bag and grabbed out his text book. He flipped through the pages until he found a picture that was simular to this plant. Sneezewort...and it was used in the Befuddlement Draught? Sounded good to him.
After checking if his gloves were correctly on , he leaned forward and clipped a piece of the Sneezewort before putting it in a vial. He then placed his text book and vial in his bag and then quickly used magic to clean up.

After collecting the jobberknoll feather from the magical creatures sanctuary, Kat made her way to the greenhouses as fast as she could to collect another ingredient for Potions class. Kat knew that herbs and plants, well some of them, were also ingredients in making potions and some of them were plants Kat could identify so that meant that she wouldn't have any trouble collecting them. Once she arrived at the greenhouse, Kat looked around for a plant. Any plant as long as they were used in brewing potions or whatever.
She eyed the bloodroot for a moment. Kat remembered using that in her potions OWL last term, but she wasn't going to risk collecting something that would irritate her skin. She wasn't going to allow that, you know.
The lavenders at the corner of the greenhouse caught the Slytherin's eye. They were used in potions right? Cos Kat was very positive about that. She made her way there to collect some lavender. Professor Bentley wouldn't mind, right? It was for Potions class and for a good purpose. Her herbs wouldn't go to waste if Bentley needed assurance. After collecting a few lavenders, Kat placed them neatly inside her slingbag and went to another location.

It didn't matter how completely out of breath she was. She only had two out of four ingredients and she was really under pressure, especially since the ruddy Potions classroom was in the dungeons and needed about ten minutes to get down to. She scanned the Greenhouses and reached down, wrapping her hand around the stem of some lavender aaaaaand yanked.
Nooooow, run.
She'd worry about the last ingredient when she got to class.
Sarah had to put on her worn gloves, as her mother had not set her another pair. Yet she was sure that there would be no harm done as once the toadstools are numbed there is not much they could harm you with.
She walked aorund until she found a perfect speciman. "She took out her wand and issued a jab in the direction of the toadstool, not touching it of course. "Viro Torpeo" she said preforming the numbing charm.
Once the toadstool was numbed Sarah crept forward, reached for under its cap and behold there were its two fangs. Sarah held onto the one and gave it yank and placed it in her jar She then gave another yank at the other followed by a few more yanks and soon the second fang was out. Sarah placed that too in her jar and took off her gloves and put it back in her satchel. Then she headed out the door.
