HOMEWORK #1 - Open Classroom
 
As you walk in the door there is a large note that's flying in the room. The note has the following instructions on it.

Forrest arrived at the potions classroom after breakfast on Saturday after class with a book that probably weighed more than him, to find the classroom...

...empty. Completely. Not even a fly in here.

He'd hoped, prayed, that there would be people in here. OLDER people too, preferably, who might have helped him a little with his choice of ingredients. But it was only him and himself in there, and his disappointment and panic was obvious on his face.

Setting the book down on the closest table, he finally noticed the flying paper and took a look at it, his disappointment turning into fear, panic and anger.

"'If you fail, that is alright.'" he repeated angrily in a woman's voice. The Professor wouln't hear that, right?! "You'll get a zero, but that's fine!" He didn't even know what a 'bezoar' was, and all his enthusiasm to find out had flown away. In fact, he just wanted to sit down there and cry and whine and call for his mother who was 5300 kilometres away in Riyadh. His annoyance wasn't about the 'testing' part though, because with a piece of simple grass, dead stick, dirty lake water and a wild daisy, nothing would happen. The 'failing' part annoyed him, and the size of expectation. He was a bloody muggleborn first year, and he was expected to find GOOD ingredients then brew a bloody WORKING potion with them, only for it to be SOLD for the bloody Hogwarts.

Crying there seemed like the wisest thing he'd ever do in his life, but with a last effort that was for his mother and father only, he lifted the book again and found his table. It stood out perfectly from the others that had fancy ingredients on them. Dropping the book on it, since he didn't quite care whether anything fell, he just plopped himself down and fonded his hand on the book to lie his head over them.

Maybe if he looked miserable enough, professor would pity him and excuse him or something.

But anyway, Zeke dropped by the classroom to check up on things and see who were planning to brew up some who-knows-what potion. Entering the place, the Gryffindor was half-surprised to find the room almost isolated...except for one kid.

That wasn't a way a professor would greet a student. Forrest lifted his head grudgingly. He remembered the boy from the train. He was the one so keen on calling him a kiddo. Zeke. Gryffindor. Pretty old too, though Forrest didn't know his grade. Maybe he knew something. Maybe he had better ingredients. Who knew? All in all, he wasn't a professor, and Forrest was past hoping he could brew something that would work. He just wanted his CLEAN and FREE home with good meals and his family.

His lip trembled, so it took him some time to answer the boy. As if it wasn't obvious. He was ANGRY at him too for showing up in there. Now, even if the professor came, she wouldn't think he was miserable enough, because he looked like he was working with an older student.

"I'm not," he answered at last in a thick voice, looking at him grudgingly still. His grudge wasn't directed at him really, but he was the first living thing that seemed to be worried for him and he just had to bear it or leave.

Straightening up, he didn't even let the boy answer.

"How can she expect me to collect the right ingredients? I'm a first year and a muggleborn--the worst combination ever! And she also expects me to brew the correct potion--I don't even count the 'discovering' part of it in two little weeks--as if I don't have eight-something other classes already, as if nothing truly would happen if my potion didn't work..." He trailed off as his lower lip started to tremble more strongly.

Tears had started to form in his eyes, and he would be crying if he uttered one more word.

So he wasn't okay, which was quite obvious if the seventeen year old had been paying more attention. Before he could even ask what's wrong, the Hufflepuff beat him to it.

............oh. Listening to Forrest shoot out words one after the other, Zeke bit his lip. Whoah. He'd forgotten how much the firsties cared a lot about their grades and homework. Well, I guess Zeke will be doing his homework in Potions after all.

"Hey, hey," panic. WHAT TO DO WHEN A SMALL GUY IS ON THE VERGE ON TEARS IN FRONT OF YOU. Uhhh. His hands began to flail a bit, not knowing what to do. "Uh, erm. D-don't cry."

Gulp. "L-let's see here, hm? Uhm what kinds of stuff did you gather around? I could help you, I guess." His eyes wandered off to the table. This kid did gather ingredients, didn't he?

'Don't cry'? 'Don't cry'?! If he wasn't on the verge of tears, or if he was a third person watching the scene, Forrest would have laughed with all his being. Now, though, he did quite the opposite--he started crying. His face got all ugly and red as tears fell down his cheeks. He did try to hold it back though--only, he FAILED in that TOO like he failed in magic.

He sobbed dramatically, oblivious to the boy's panic as he was overwhelmed with his. He hoped momentarily that maybe the boy was potions-champion or something, but he killed the hope before it got too strong. There was nobody that could help him now, except maybe his mother to calm him down and teach the Professor a lesson, and she was 5300 kilometres away. So he just sat there and sobbed for a while, until he could breathe properly.

"I got nothin'," he replied despite a bunch of dried grass, a bottle of lake water, a wild daisy and a dead stick on his table. Because honestly, who would count them as ingredients?

"I'll get a zero and--" he sobbed, giving in to tears fully.

No wait. This was not a Gryffindor so he can't exactly say "giving up is not what lions do." Err, say "giving up is not what badgers do?" Replace lions with badgers. "I've got some ingredients....maybe I could help you find new ones as well?" unless the badger wanted to go "find another person's ingredients where they left them" His eyes lingered on the bunch of stuff Forrest gathered. Normal stuff, it appeared to the seventh year. "Or I'll give you mine." That would same him the job of doing his homework that he did not intend to do at all.

Tucker expected more people in the potions classroom, but was pleased when he found that there really weren't TOO many people there and it was nice and open for him to work. He walked past a pair who were already working--was that dude CRYING? Whaaa--and went to his workstation. He'd been pretty quiet during class but he'd been able to come up with a few ingredients that he thought would make a pretty decent anti-acne potion.

He pulled out his ingredients - flitterbloom, dittany, mint and rat spleen. He'd done some research and it seemed like THIS potion was probably the only thing he could make with this hodgepodge of ingredients.

Well, time to get to work!

Jory entered the room where they were supposed to make their Potion. There were only a few students there but he didn't mind. It would be less crowded and less fumes. And less chances of sustaining any injury.

The Puffer had a jar containing three caterpillars, five daisies and three eagle owl feathers in his bag. And also his book containing the instructions he and Annabeth had worked on earlier. He hoped he had packed everything they would need because he thought he was going to be late for meeting Anna and had hurried out from the dorm.

Jory bag down on one of the tables and unpacked the necessary materials. "Better wait for Anna,'' he thought. To pass the time, he studied the potion recipe they came up with.

Yeah yeah, if he had SOMETHING, he wouldn't have given up. But he had nothing at all and the professor would know if he cheated. He didn't know how, but they always knew.

"She said we should work with our ingredients only," he answered as he was calmed down a little, though his face was all swollen and his voice was still trembling. He wiped his eyes with the back of his sleeves as two more people came in. Zeke could see him crying, but these two couldn't.

"You can't." In regards to his offer of giving his material to him. "She'll know." So Forrest was in fact ready to take them, if only she wouldn't know. He wasn't crying anymore though, he was just breathing heavily and he was pretty tired from all the stress and crying. He just missed his home. He didn't want to be a wizard, he could be as well happy being an engineer or something. In fact, if being a wizard meant cleaning and earning easy money, he might as well give up on his ability.

"Okay then, if you say so," he said softly then frowned. GAH, this feeling. He hated this. He really wished he could have at least done something to help Forrest.

In general, he seemed like a nice kid and the seventh year felt really bad for leaving him alone. Maybe someone else would come along and help the boy? Guilty feels. But really it seems like there was nothing Zeke could contribute at all. Unless he was some kind of transfiguration expert.

....TRANSFIGURATION! Why didn't he think of it before? Wait, that was possible right? Ehhhh. Zeke had doubts. Okay nevermind, just walk away now mister. Walk away. He mumbled a quick "Sorry," and began to head for the door.

Daichi was pretty much excited about this homework. It was finally something that did not involve any stupid cleaning so the Slytherin had entered the open classroom with a good feeling.

With his school bag over his shoulders he found a desk and placed the bag down on top of it. He zipped the bag open and took out four vials, the ingredients he had found during the lesson.

Placing the vials to the side, the Prefect placed his bag on the ground and looked around. He didn't see his partner, Sonea anywhere in the room so he quickly checked his watch and saw that he was a little bit early.

He sat down on the chair and waited for the younger Slytherin

"Hi, everybody!" Grinning, Annabeth greeted the other students while discretely was scanning the room, looking for his new hero friend: Jori.

She found him studying their potion,she noticed that he had already chosen a table for their homework, it was filled with his ingredients: she was late. Better to run to the table.
"Hi, Jori. Sorry for my delay... I was trying to filter the flobberworm mucus and I was so entertained that I delayed... But it's clean, I got it! Look!" she said her eyes shining, and she took out the bottle from her rucksack. The green goo was translucid and it didn't show any traces of dried leaves or clods. She had a big smile in her face: "I think it'll work. The others ingredients are here: horned slug, sprigs of lavender and fresh nettles." She said unpacking the ingredients that she had wrapped carefully in a yellow paper. "I'm so excited!! It's my first potion!" She clapped her hands happily. She was confident that with the help of the seventh year student, she would reach that goal.

When the Potions Mistress gave homework like the one she gave, it was always good to work with a Ravenclaw, no questions asked. They were the ones who'd be able to work their way around ingredients that had nothing to do with each other and she would be the one providing motivation and moral support--she didn't mind being the tester too. That in itself would be an adventure.

This being the case she was working with Mo. Yup. Mo. Even if he wasn't meant to be talking to her, she didn't plan to go through this without someone who might have actually known what they were doing.

As a last resort she was prepared to have him communicate with her through parchment writing.

Mhm, she was well prepared. After finding the table that had her ingredients, she fixed them along the table and put the parchment and quill to the side. But again, that was a last resort. Now to wait...Ravenclaws were usually early, yeah?

Mika ran her hands through her hair as she set up her cauldron and placed them on the table in front of her. She just bit her lip. She pulled her unicorn hair closer to her and sighed. Unicorn hair, flobberworm mucus, peppermint, and aloe vera.

She bit her lip and organized her ingredients again. Just staring at them, wondering how on earth she was going to put them together. She needed help and fast. She quickly pulled the other ingredient she had snagged on the trip and placed it on the table next to the unicorn hair...unicorn dung, that was more unique right? So she put the hairs back into the bag and frowned.

"Scourgify" she cleaned the cauldron and just stared at it. She didn't know what to do first.

West had called Mo a liar about being friends with Lex (which he wasn't) and had stopped being his friend... so was there really any reason now not to be nice to the little Gryffindor? Other than the occasional bouts of being crazy-making? It wasn't like West cared what he did anymore anyway.

So here he was partnering with her in Potions. "I hope you know that I'm sort of brilliant at Potions, or at least I'm very very passable, and I won't be exploding anything on purpose or on accident today," Mo bossed her in a general way as he entered the room and took up a spot near Lex.

"Also, hi. So let's pool our ingredients and see what we have. I have magical horse hair. Unicorn and Abraxan, although I thought I had thestral... Also, I have dandelions, cockroaches that are still alive, and moke skin. What about you?"

Potions HW1 - Post 1 ---Anyone?
 
So she was feeling a little doubtful about her potion making ability. Not her potion making ability as in, general following directions and getting things done correctly, cause she was good at doing that. More in the way that her ingredients might not make anything at all when put together.

She spread them out on her table and stared at them. She flipped open her Potions book and desperately tried to find something that used all of her ingredients. What if we can make a potion with only SOME of our ingredients? Is that okay? She wasn't sure.

She pulled out her notes from class as a reference for the properties of her ingredients.

SPOILER!!: Ingredients

Daisy - Used in the Shrinking Solution, so it must have shrinking or compacting qualities.

Leech - Used in Polyjuice Potion and Shrinking Solution - They absorb things, namely blood, but would presumably soak up other things in a potion.

Spotted Owl Feather - Couldn't find anything for, but an Eagle Owl Feather is used in dragon tonic and must be a healing agent because it heals sick dragons.

Salt - Has healing properties. Can be used to treat scale rot, common in dragons. Used in medicines.



She looked around the Potions classroom, hoping someone might want to partner up with her. Maybe they would have things to use that could be mutually beneficial for a potion?

"That's slightly disappointing." She commented lightly, now being joined by her potion buddy--YES, Potion Buddy, whether he accepted that title or not because they were now sharing the same cauldron. NOD. "I'll just have to find my own explosion somewhere else once this is all over." That wouldn't have been so hard.

"I've got ginger roots, chicken feathers, black pepper and water--oh I have parchment too but that was for a different reason and I won't be needing it anymore." Really it wasn't worth mentioning but it would have been rude to introduce everything but it. It might have felt excluded.

"So now we get started on not making things blow up." SIGH. "First things first. What are we making?" She looked over her ingredients and Mo's. "I don't think I know of a potion that has this combination. Any ideas?"

Always ask the Ravenclaw; it was like a rule, didn't you know that???

Now it was time to start working on her potion. She already knew what she wanted to do (thanks to an annoying mosquito bite on her arm). So now all she needed was her ingredients. But before she could look, she was smacked in the head by a flying piece of parchment. That contained the instructions. Thanks, Professor Lafay. But the fact that she wasn't making them get out and sell the potions. And it made sense that the money made would go to Hogwarts, as much as she hated it. Blegh. The school was turning them into their own personal little moneymakers.

Anywho, Sky find her ingredients right where she'd left them, just like the flying note had said she would. She grabbed a cauldron and cast a Scourgify on it. Then her handwritten instructions came out of her pocket. "Aguamenti." Once the cauldron was a third of the way full, she canceled the charm. Then she lit a fire underneath. Come on now, boil!

Clement wasn't exactly sure whether his ingredients were going to actually work anything. He'd brought his potions book with him, because he wanted to have a better look at the ingredients. Walking into he room, he was nearly knocked in the face by flying instructions. He reached out, grabbing the parchment. Perfect. He read them quickly, before wandering over to one of the benches, and sitting down. He placed the instructions down, before placing his bag onto the table. He pulled his potions text book out, followed by his four ingredients. As he was unsure of if they were going to go together, he just wanted to make sure that he wasn't going to blow the potions lab up.

Clement sat down, flicking through the text book, and spending the next 5 minutes reading. Hmm. That wasn't too bad. Fertilizer. It looked like it would make a fertilizer. Well they could work. Although he wasn't too good at herbology, he would make do with a fertilizer. Good thing that he'd brought the book, because he'd use the instructions in the book to do his potion.

Okay. The first thing he needed to do was clean his cauldron. Pointing his wand into the cauldron he muttered "scourgify" and it was nice and clean. Perfect. Now to add water. Pointing his wand again he murmured "Aguamenti." And waited until the cauldron was half filled, as the instructions said. Placing his wand down, he turned the flame on underneath. Now he just needed to wait for it to boil. He turned to look at the instructions, and whilst he waited for the water to boil, he began cutting up the nettle leaves and the kelp in turn. At least then it would be ready to add in.

She read over the instructions carefully before releasing the paper back into air. It was the only one around, it seemed.

Following what was written, she moved with enthusiasm and trudged over to the table she had been occupying for almost six years now. She'd always used that workstation. She was comfortable with it so she didn't want to change that. Unless....irreversible circumstances presented itself. In a matter of a few minutes, she had gathered her ingredients: unicorn tail hair, jobberknoll feathers, gillyweed and bubotuber pus. Then she made her way towards her waiting chickadee who was now cleaning her cauldron.

"Mika..." She nudged the girl as she settled her ingredients next to hers. If she wasn't wrong, the girl also had unicorn dung, aloe vera, peppermint and flobberworm mucus. Of course, she knew. They've planned out to work together on this one and Beezus had taken the liberty to asking what ingredients she had so she could do a research ahead of things. "So, I've looked up stuff. And I think I know what kind of potion we're going to brew." She nodded and gave the girl an encouraging smile.

She wasn't 100% sure but at least, she got the gist of things. Researching was a huge help, really.

He heard her say something about this being her first potion. He remembered when he made his first potion too. He had been just as excited as she was. "Do you think we should make any changes to the recipe?''

Caterpillars: to prevent red nose;
Daisies to get rid of coughs;
Horned slugs to cure red eyes;
Eagle owl to get help in ridding of the allergy faster;
Fresh nettles to stop runny noses (they have vasoconstrictor action);
Lavender to aid in relaxation;
Flobberworm mucus to smooth the solution.

Add 3 chopped caterpillars to your cauldron previously filled with 9 cups of water. Heat it on a medium temperature, stirring anti-clockwise 7 times. Turn off the fire leaving the potion in the hot cauldron. Add 5 daisies cut into small pieces to the potion. Stir it 3 times, clockwise. It should be yellow now. Then medium heat the cauldron, until it begins to boil and add 3 eagle owl feather to the cauldron and wait until it turns red. Turn off the heat and add the 1 smashed horned slug. Stir 2 times clockwise every 2 minutes for 12 minutes or until it turns light pink. Crush 15 scoops of fresh nettles in the mortar with the pestle. Add to the cauldron and heat it to a low temperature for 2 minutes, without stirring. Turn off the fire. It should be light red. Then grind a sprig of lavender and add to the cauldron. Wait for 30 seconds and then heat the cauldron to a high temperature while stirring clockwise for a minute. Turn off the fire and add 13 drops of flobberworm mucus and stir again, 7 times anticlockwise.


If everything was alright, they could start preparing the ingredients.

Cut. Cut. Cut. Clement kept a careful eye on his water as he cut the kelp up carefully. He didn't want it to over boil, because that would make his potion redundant. Pausing, once he'd cut all of the kelp, he glanced into the cauldron, and noted that the water was boiling. Perfect. He glanced at the instructions from his text book again. "Put cut kelp into boiling water...stir clockwise 5 times, the anti-clockwise another 5 times. Okay." He nodded, before placing his knife on the bench. Carefully, he picked up the cut bit of kelp, and placed them into the cauldron, being careful not to splash too much. He really did not want to get burned, that would not be cool. After placing the kelp into the cauldron, he picked up his wand, and with the use of a spell, turned the water 5 times clockwise, and then 5 times anti-clockwise. Well that had gone fine so far. He glanced over, looking at the potion, which had gone a pale greeny sort of colour once he had placed the kelp in, and stirred.

He frowned, not too sure if that was correct, and looked back to his text book. Ahh. It was the correct color. Perfect. Now he had to leave that to boil or brew or whatever for 5 minutes. Okay. That seemed simple. Clement placed his wand back down, in the spine of the book, so he wouldn't lose it, and began reading the next set of instructions, so he would know what he had to do next.

"Oh, Jori, when I'm excited I often talk and talk and talk nonstop... If I'm driving you crazy, please, just let me know and I'll be quiet." She said imitating with her left hand the gesture of closing her mouth with a zipper, her eyes wide open and holding a smile.

Kace decided to do the potions homework. He might as well get it started. Once got down to the homework room, he noticed other students working on their potions as well. Well at least he wasn't alone.

He checked his ingredients to see what potion he could do but he was stuck, he really had no idea what potion to do.

*Valerian Root- the roots are used for ingredients in potions such as the Draught of the Living death and Draught of peace.
*Aconite-Its flowers are useful in potion-making, but its leaves are very toxic. aconite is most commonly known as an ingredient of Wolfsbane Potion.
*Water- water has a number of applications, such as its use in Potions, the preferred form being standard potioning water. It can be produced at will using magic.
*Eagle Owl Feather-They are used in the Dragon Tonic.


Maybe he could work with an older student and they together could come up with an idea for an potion. He was looking through the textbook for ideas in the meantime.

A few minutes later she saw Daichi, he already sat behind their desk and waited for her. “Hi Daichi!” greeted Sonea while she placed her bag behind her on the floor. She zipped her bag open and placed the ingredients she had found on the table so that Daichi could see what for ingredients she had. She had a Lavender, Motherwort, Nightshade and a Jobberknoll feather out of her bag and showed them to Daichi. “I have also my notes with me” said Sonea while she sat down next to Daichi.

Were his ingredients that hopeless?! Was he that bad that he just ran away as if he was contagious? Trying to erase the shock and panic off his face, he didn't call out for the boy. The room was more crowded now and they made noise. They chatted, because they actually had cool ingredients to work with. His eyes watered in despair as he looked around. He had never felt this bad in his life, and his mother was all away... Stuffing his pathetic ingredients inside his bag, he didn't bother to pick up the heavy potions book and rushed out.

There had to be some way. He had to try his chance with the professor. Even if it'd be a zero, he wanted to learn it privately, not in the middle of a crowded classroom.

Nigel had all his potion ingredients ready and the only thing left was to make something with them. It seemed that most of his stuff was used in Polyjuice Potion. But Nigel did have the recipe for it. But did not feel comfortable making it. He was no potion master.

So after some thinking he decided to try and mix some for the things together. He did not really care if it worked or not.

Okay, Now lets fill the cauldron with water and put a fire underneath it. It was the first step Nigel needed to do. Also a very important one. "Aguamenti".

Nigel looked as his cauldron filling up thinking. One less ingredient to worry about.

Tobias strolled into the potions classroom, eager to get started (and get creative) on what was sure to be a very interesting potions assignment. Straight away, he went to find his potions ingredients that he'd left on his desk earlier, as per the instructions: fluxweed, a tiny vial of salt, ginger root and lavender.

After setting up his cauldron and potions equipment, as well as preparing his ink and parchment (for he was still unsure of quite how to go about this task), Tobias surveyed his ingredients and placed the end of the quill feather in his mouth, occasionally rifling through his potions textbook, as he tried to work out what he was going to do.

Now it was boiling! Yay! Sky left it to boil for the required five minutes, grabbing a mortar and pestle instead. She cast a Scourgify on them before picking up the the chamomile and placed it in the mortar. Mash, mash, mashing the chamomile. She discovered that she had timed it out perfectly when she was writing out her instructions because it took almost exactly five minutes to mash the chamomile perfectly. She dumped the mashed plants into the boiling water and began stirring clockwise.

Mika couldn’t help but beam when she heard what Beatrice had said. That was the most amazing thing anyone could have told her at all. She knew what they were going to make – which made making the potion so much easier.

“Really?” She asked the utter adoration for the prefect clear in her voice. “That is amazing – so, what are we going to be making?” She asked as she made room at the table for Beezus to sit down and set up her ingredients as well. Mika had of course whipped out her wand as she sat there talking to her.

“Scourgify” there, the cauldron was now extra clean. She smiled brightly, “So, what do you need me to do?” She asked taking a her parchment out she was of course going to make a list of what their potion recipe was. Because after all weren’t they making their own potion here; this could be a momentous occasion.

Amara walked into the classroom. They were supposed to be brewing something there....something? She'd thought the room would be empty where she could just sit and keep on thinking about her potions. But to her surprise, she found it teeming with students. Students already in the process of brewing something. The fact repulsed her. She still didn't have any idea of what she could make. She'd thought several times to owl her dad about it, but it would defeat the purpose wouldn't it? Asking for his help when he'd challenged her to learn potions to perfection.

She stood perplexed near the door, deciding whether she wanted to enter and make a fool of herself or leave for good.

His potion looked the right color. That made Clement happy. It obviously meant he was doing something right. He nodded, giving it a nice good look. He knew he was only at the start though. He hadn't exactly put all his ingredients in yet. Looking away from her perfect potion, so he would say himself, he looked back at his text books. "Chopped dried Nettles..." He murmured, glancing down at his nettles. Well they were kind of dry. More dry than they had been when he had collected them. Clement shrugged, and quickly cut up the remaining nettle leaves. He tried to be as careful as possible, figuring that them being neatly cut would be very good. It took him a few minutes, but he wanted them to be as neat as possible. He glanced back at the text book, before placing the chopped nettles into the cauldron gently. They floated on the top, and he glanced at the text book again. Ahh. They were supposed to do that. Very good.

"Stir 10 times clockwise....leave for 5 minutes...then stir 5 times anti-clockwise." He nodded, picking his wand up again, before stirring the potion 10 times in the clockwise direction. Now he needed to let the thing simmer for 5 minutes. He sat back down again, just watching the clock. Oh wow. Time was certainly going to go slow if he just watched the clock. Changing his focus of attention, he read the instructions in his text book again, though this was like the fifth time he had. The next time he looked up at the clock it had just gone 5 minutes. "Perfect."

Picking up his wand again, he stirred the potion 5 times anti-clockwise. Hmm. The potion was still the green color it had been before. He consulted the textbook again, and nodded. That was kind of right. It was a little bit too dark. But that was okay. So he thought anyway. Moving onto the next set of instructions then.

Laura was sure that Amara was a bit scared about it, she walked over to her cauldron and waited to see if Amara would join her.

Her hope level went down a teeny bit. She was so sure the awesome girl would have some idea about a potion. Nevertheless, together they could make things count. She eyed her ingredients. "Didn't you sell all you're ashwinder eggs?" she asked. Gillyweed...OHHH! She knew that one!

Nodding in satisfaction, she piled out her ingredients. "We have..." she trailed as she placed them one by one. "Knot grass...owl feather...fluxweed...nettles..." And the last one. "..caterpillars" she said with a grin. "It doesn't count, just an extra ingredient" And the same as Laura's.

Laura looked at Amara. "I think we might be able to get a potion made with these ingredients." Laura smiled truthfully, "But first we had better make sure everything is ready, "Scourgify!" Laura pointed her wand at the cauldron and smiled as she cleaned the cauldron was she was sure that it was really clean she stopped the spell.

Laura looked at the ingredient on the desk. "I think we should full the cauldron up water first." Laura smiled as she looked at Amara, "Want to do the honors of should I?" Laura radiated some confidence with her smile and Amara was encouraged by that. And it was easy to get the girl encouraged with potions. She lined their ingredients and watched as the girl lighted the cauldron.

She smiled at the offer. "OH yes, I would loved to" She took out her wand and pointed at the cauldron. OKAY, water charm. Erm... "Aguamenti!" The cauldron filled up with water from the tip of her wand. She was awed at the sight. Magic always caught her open-mouthed.

Moving on to the lighting. Now that was just easy to her. She was a master at lighting things up. "Incendio!" she said confidently, pointing her wand at the cauldron. A brilliant flame burst below the cauldron, glimmering as it did, giving an unusual brightness to the surrounding. GRIN.

He had to smash the horned slug, so using the flat side of his clean knife, Jory carefully pressed on the slug. He found it a quite disgusting thing to do but it must be done.

After the seventh year was done with the slug, he retrieved a mortar and pestle. "Scourgify!'' he said. Just in case it was dirty. He counted out a few scoops of nettles in the mortar and began to crush them. After they were reduced to a powder, he added the remaining scoops and crushed those as well.

"You can cut the five daisies, Anna,'' Jory said. And then after that they could start brewing. "Don't worry about it. I'm used to having my sister going on and on.'' Not recently, though. He tried not to think of his sister.

The potion turned a dangerous red and had a heavy stench. "Ewgh!" But the smell subsided as Laura added the caterpillars with great speed. Then it turned pink. "Merlin knows..." she said, winking. "...Bah, I don't like that color" She picked her fluxweed. "So let's change it!" And she added the fluxweed to the boiling pink liquid.

The liquid turned into a pale orange color and she could see something floating...something red. BLINK.

Laura giggled as she stirred the potion 4 times clockwise, "That looks a bit better, the red was starting to go away but the potion didn't look good now, it looked like someone had thrown up. Then he had suggested her to drink the potion??? Well, she didn't expect it!

"Um, Jory... you're not talking seriously when you asked me if I mind drinking the potion, aren't you?" Then she noticed he was joking and added: "I was thinking about to send it as a gift to the DADA's teacher... er... I forget her name. She's always that funny?" Annabeth smiled an rubbed her ribs: "my waist is still paining so much that I laughed during her class."

The first year student finished cutting the caterpillars and began to cut the daisies in small pieces. She loved cutting things. She was feeling relieved that Jory wasn't bothered with her anxious chat.

"So, d'you have a sister?"

Spotted Owl Feather - Couldn't find anything for, but an Eagle Owl Feather is used in dragon tonic and must be a healing agent because it heals sick dragons.

Salt - Has healing properties. Can be used to treat scale rot, common in dragons. Used in medicines.



She looked around the Potions classroom, hoping someone might want to partner up with her. Maybe they would have things to use that could be mutually beneficial for a potion?



SERIOUSLY... SERIOUSLY... Minerva's mind was shouting the words as she walked into the potions classroom. Maybe if Lafay would have given a heads up that they would need to brew the ingredients together before they went and picked them, she would have picked a little better matched ingredients. What on earth was she going to make with chocolate, peppers, acorns, and lavender.... weirdest combination EVER...

As she sulked into the potion room her eyes scanned the other students and she froze for a second. Was Laura Hyde working with a first year. Oh my.. maybe it was good Minerva had come that day, because obviously Laura was sick and would soon crash to the floor if she was doing homework and helping a younger student.

Glancing at the other students Minerva saw Eliza looking as confused as she was feeling, walking over to her she smiled, "Hey Eliza, think you might want a partner? Maybe putting our ingredients together will make a better potion then I can come up with just using my four." She laid her bag down and gathered her ingredients. "I have chocolate, Jalapeno Pepper, Acorns, and Lavender. What did you gather?" Please have some normal ingredients Min thought, so that maybe she could figure out what to put together. Now a knew thought came to her mind did they have to use all eight or could they maybe leave one out.

First things first, he needed to heat up his cauldron. Tucker used Aguamenti to fill up the cauldron and then he lit a fire underneath it. As he waited for it to heat up, he glanced around the room and tried to peek at what the other students were making. The odor in the room was a bunch of potions mixed together and it was nearly impossible to figure out from the smell what was going on in here!

So as he waited for the potion to continue boiling, he pulled out his potions book and looked up all the ingredients and tried to figure out what exactly he had to do to these ingredients before adding them, as well as how many stirs he'd need to do and all that fun stuff.

Daichi gave her a small smile as he watched her taking out her own ingredients from her school bag. He surprisingly recognized them all. Must have been from the day and night OWL studying. "Hey Sonea" he when the girl sat down beside him.

"Okay first things first" he said as he looked around for a second to see what the other students were doing and then turned his gaze back to the cauldron in front of them. "We first need to clean the cauldron with Scourgify" he said. "I can already do the spell with ease so i want you to clean the cauldron first" They were all learning and re-learning them in classes so no saying you can't do it Missy!


"Do you want the ingredients to be chopped with a knife or just throw them in the cauldron?
" he asked, letting her have a voice in this as well.

Annabeth was amazed with that spell "scourgify", which had cleaned the cauldron in a blink of eye and she was gazing at Jory's movements with immense interest. For a moment she looked at her own wand and thought 'you won't wait the whole eternity to cast this kind of magic... I'll work hard to make you the most skilled wand of all the times'.

"Here", Annabeth said, handing him the cup. "Um, if you don't mind, I'll measure the 9 cups of water. I must just pour them into the cauldron, right? Or there's a kind of ritual or magical words or something that we must do before pouring them into the cauldron? I didn't read anything like that, but I'm used to doubt when the things seem to be easy... and the intructions of all the potions we've studied can be summed up as to cut, to add, to heat and stir... We only need to pay attention to the order, and control the heat, count the stir ... or am I underestimating the process?"

She was a bit anxious to know whether she was learning or not; at the same time she was fascinated with his knowledge. She sighed and muttered: "everything seems to be easy when you're doing..." She wished later she had never said anything and hoped that he hadn't listened to her.

Ginger was excellent for wit-sharpening, and the cockroaches were good for stamina and hardiness. The water was an excellent base, obviously, and it was clever of Lex to think of that. The Abraxan hair was useful in some girding and strengthening potions... but chicken feathers? He wasn't sure on that one, but he had some ideas.

"Are you willing to go with a gut feeling? Because if so, you go ahead and clean out the cauldron, and I'll start chopping the ginger and the dandelion roots." He picked up his potions knife and gave it a quick, "Scourgify."

Michael had all his ingredients lined up in a row and he sat on his stool with his chin resting on the workbench as he stared at those ingredients. Unfortunately for him, he didn't have his father's flare for potions.

While he knew what each ingredient was used for, he did not know what kind of potion he could make using them all together.

He prodded the Aswinder egg with his finger in the hopes that it might give him some sort of idea. He should have been quicker and partnered up with one of the older students, but they all seemed to have partners.

Hmm, maybe he could throw all the ingredients in together and see what happened.

First years had it ROUGH, Rhodes decided.

Not only did they not know anyone, well, in her case, the few people that she did know, she didn't like, but they also didn't know anything. How in the name of Merlin was she supposed to create a potion? A potion out of the lamest four ingredients a person could find? Perhaps if she would have known beforehand that she was going to have to make a potion out of the things she found, she wouldn't have went the easy way and found things that couldn't be found in her pocket. Ice Mice, really? How many potions used Ice Mice as an ingredient!?

She didn't know. Because she didn't know anything!

Sitting at her table, her four ingredients sitting right in front of her on top of it, Rhodes glanced around the Potion's room with her eyebrows furrowed. She.. wanted everyone else to mess up their potion. Because she knew she was going to mess up hers. At least, that was what she wanted until her eyes landed on one of the people she didn't like; Michael. She didn't even waste any time collecting her things, and making her way over to him, she sat in the empty seat beside him. She placed her phial of dirt, clump of cat hair, from her own cat, of course, balled up spiderwebs and ice mice down right next to his ingredients and just staaaared at him. Partners? Sounded good to her.

That she could do too. Incendio was a fun spell but not one she got to use often. No real need outside of the potions classroom and threatening the portraits who seemed to think she was bluffing half the time. Meeeh.

She brushed her hair behind her ears, took another deep breath and continued. "Then I've got an owl feather which can be used for a dragon tonic, so it must have healing properties of some kind... And lastly, I have some salt. That salt is also used to treat sick dragons, with scale rot specifically. So...I've got two ingredients useful in shrinking solutions and two that are useful for healing dragons. Sound compatible with yours at all?" She was a little winded from that long, descriptive relay of information, but hopefully they could figure this out together.

She gave her friend a moment to get her information out about her ingredients and gave their work station a quick cleaning in the meantime. "Scourgify!" There. Now the table was nice and clean. It was a start at least.

So they were going to trust his gut, which was kind of nerve-wracking. Mo nodded a few times to himself as he watched Lex clean out their cauldron before he turned to the chopping task. She seemed to know what she was doing, and he wasn't about to micromanage a headstrong Gryffindor.

Instead, he focused on finely cutting first the ginger, then the dandelion, cleaning his knife between ingredients. "Yeah, you can set the fire and boil the water. We want a slow boil, though... so don't rush it. And don't burn yourself."

Okay, so that was a little patronizing. Maybe she didn't notice. He set the cut plants off to the side and waited for Lex to finish with the fire.

But… She was a good girl for now and said nothing. She pointed her wand at the cauldron and spoke the spell calm and clear. “Scourgif” and the cauldron was clean! Sonea grinned, she was still every time when a spell worked happy about the result.

“Will it made a difference if we are cutting them or not?” Sonea looked at the ingredients who were all not the same size and she wondered if that was a problem or not. “Would the potion not become too strong or too weak if there is something more from one ingredient than the other?” If it made no difference than they could throw it all in the cauldron but she needed to know it for sure.

Just when he was about to start banging his head on the bench to kick his brain into gear, he felt someone sit beside him and his spirits immediately soared at the thought of having someone to partner him and maybe create a really good potion.

His spirits plummeted however when he turned his head to see that it was Rhodes sitting beside him. "Oh it's you." His gaze went from her annoying face to the stuff she had put on the bench and he raised his eyebrows.

"What are they supposed to be?" He asked, pointing at the mess she had put down. Michael stared at the stuff for a moment before returning his gaze to the Slytherin. "You've got to be kidding. That's your ingredients?"

Oh Merlin!!

This was going to be a disaster.

They were all new.

She turned up her nose at his question about her ingredients and wasn't even going to grace him with an answer. They were good ingredients. A little different, sure. But she had been the one to pick them. They were good. "No, I am not kidding you. They are my ingredients." And if he didn't shut up about them, she would make him eat them. Or she would just push him off his stool. That would probably be easier.

"Your ingredients aren't even good. What do you have anyway?" Because she didn't want to look. Hmmmph.

She took the handle and stirred it. 4 clockwise turns and 2 anti-clockwise. That's what her father did with most of his potions. A few seconds later the potions glimmered. It turned.....pale gray. Somewhere between white and transparent. HUH?

And it looked quiet thicker. "Laura, I think we should add some more water to it.." she said as she examined it. The older girl would do the honors, right?

She really had no problem with placing the thing right over his head and banging on the outside of it with a spoon. And if she got into trouble for it, it would have been worth it. Instead, though, since her cauldron was on the table already, and she didn't want to dirty it by having Michael's head inside of it, she balled up her fist and punched him, as hard as she could right on the arm. It probably wasn't even all that hard, but as long as it got her point across.. "I am not dumb." She wasn't! "Your ingredients are dumb."

The punch was a lot harder than he had expected. Which was pretty dumb not to expect something like that. He had seen his mother in action, so he knew very well girls could be pretty tough when they wanted to be. he just hadn't expected Rhodes to be that tough. There was nothing of her. And since he had a mother who could punch out a man's lights when she wanted to and having grown up with Zahra, Michael didn't fully get as yet that boys really should not be hitting girls.

So after Rhodes had given him that punch, Michael immediately retaliated with a swift kick to her shins under the table. He had no problems in showing her who was boss.

Chatter and squeak? Oh brother. "And what kind of potion could we make out of that?" Huh? Her ingredients were dumb. "Now my ingredients on the other hand will be able to cure something. Ashwinder eggs can be used to cure Ague. Which is a type of fever." In case she didn't know that which he doubted that she did. He hadn't known what it was either until he had looked it up in his text book.

"Glumbumble parts are a cure for hysteria and Murtlap essence is used to sooth and heal wounds." Was she writing this down? "I think Fluxweed is used for to make changes. Most likely physical changes."

Soooooooo what should they make?

Did she have any ideas?

Deep in thought, Ethan wandered into the open classroom, trying to figure out just what he was going to do with his ingredients. He sort of wished Lafay would have given them an inkling about the assignment, then maybe he would have chosen his ingredients more carefully, but he supposed that was the nature of the task - to be forced to think creatively and he could respect that.

He claimed an empty workstation and pulled out the ingredients form his bag - a tin full of leeches, a daisy including its root, a chocolate frog, and several leaves from an immature mandrake. Now what to do with them..? He pulled out his textbook and journal to get some sort of idea. He glanced up at the others in the room, remembering that Lafay said something about partnering and maybe that would help him out. He noticed Minerva and Eliza working together and he gave them a smile and little wave. And everyone else seemed paired up as well. Maybe he'd just work out what properties his ingredients held and get started.. then maybe someone else would come by in search of a partner.

Annabeth was amazed with that spell "scourgify", which had cleaned the cauldron in a blink of eye and she was gazing at Jory's movements with immense interest. For a moment she looked at her own wand and thought 'you won't wait the whole eternity to cast this kind of magic... I'll work hard to make you the most skilled wand of all the times'.

"Here", Annabeth said, handing him the cup. "Um, if you don't mind, I'll measure the 9 cups of water. I must just pour them into the cauldron, right? Or there's a kind of ritual or magical words or something that we must do before pouring them into the cauldron? I didn't read anything like that, but I'm used to doubt when the things seem to be easy... and the intructions of all the potions we've studied can be summed up as to cut, to add, to heat and stir... We only need to pay attention to the order, and control the heat, count the stir ... or am I underestimating the process?"

She was a bit anxious to know whether she was learning or not; at the same time she was fascinated with his knowledge. She sighed and muttered: "everything seems to be easy when you're doing..." She wished later she had never said anything and hoped that he hadn't listened to her.



Jory saw the wonder in Anna's eyes as he cast the Cleaning Charm. He grinned. "Don't worry you'll learn it soon enough. All you have to do is point your wand, say the incantation and concentrate.''

"I can fill the cup with the water and you can pour it in,'' Jory said. "And no, we don't have to do anything else. Just make sure the cauldron and cup are clean.'' He examined the cup. It was clean alright. He pointed his wand over it. "This charm is used when we need water,'' he told Anna. "This one is also simple. Just point your wand where you want the water to go and say Aguamenti.'' He demonstrated. "Aguamenti!'' Water flowed from his wand tip and into the cup. "Finite!'' There, the first cup. "Pour that into the cauldron, Anna.'' He watched her do so and then he continued to fill the cup again. "Would you like to try fulling the cup using the charm?''

The Puffer heard what Anna said and he went a bit red. "Well, I've been learning for years,'' he said. "Most of the credit goes to the Professors.''

Laura then watches as some water went into the cauldron. "Okay then that's enough" Laura smiled. "Finite" Laura stirred the potion 4 times anti-clockwise and it went Green. "Okay then add your final ingredient and then we'll let it cool for a couple of minutes and then try it." Laura was going to try it and she hoped Amara would as well.

Putting on his gloves, Daichi began to open the vials one by one to place the ingredients on the table. He placed Sonea's ingredients to the left and his own, which were: Knotgrass, Sneezewort, Eagle owl feather(s) and a spider. He then watched the young Slytherin clean the cauldron with the spell and chuckled when he saw her grinning. "Be careful with the Sneezeworth plant because its poisonous" he hoped she had her gloves with her...

Of course, he could have cleaned the cauldron himself with ease but he wanted to let Sonea clean because she was a second year and still learning.

When she was done, the Prefect flicked his wrist and grabbed his wand. He pointed inside the cauldron and said "Aguamenti" Water burst out of the wand and Daichi had to keep an careful eye on the cauldron not to overflow it.

Stopping the spell, Daichi placed his wand away and listened to Sonea's question. He scratched his neck as he thought. It was a good question to be honest. "I think it does matter" he said. "You are right it will be dangerous if we throw in the ingredients as a whole" He really didn't want to have an explosion in the classroom...

"We can chop up the lavendal and nightshade first?" he asked and picked up his wand again. He took a deeeeeeep breath and said "Incendio" to put on the flames under the cauldron. He shivered visible at the sight and quickly turned his head away to grab a knife.

"Always clean your knife with scourgify before you use it" he smiled as he used the cleaning spell on his own knife. "You want to chop the lavendal or nightshade?" he asked.

Of course, he could have cleaned the cauldron himself with ease but he wanted to let Sonea clean because she was a second year and still learning.

When she was done, the Prefect flicked his wrist and grabbed his wand. He pointed inside the cauldron and said "Aguamenti" Water burst out of the wand and Daichi had to keep an careful eye on the cauldron not to overflow it.

Stopping the spell, Daichi placed his wand away and listened to Sonea's question. He scratched his neck as he thought. It was a good question to be honest. "I think it does matter" he said. "You are right it will be dangerous if we throw in the ingredients as a whole" He really didn't want to have an explosion in the classroom...

"We can chop up the lavendal and nightshade first?" he asked and picked up his wand again. He took a deeeeeeep breath and said "Incendio" to put on the flames under the cauldron. He shivered visible at the sight and quickly turned his head away to grab a knife.

"Always clean your knife with scourgify before you use it" he smiled as he used the cleaning spell on his own knife. "You want to chop the lavendal or nightshade?" he asked.



When the young girl saw that Daichi had his gloves with him she suddenly remembered that she also had her gloves in her bag. “Wait, I need to put my own gloves also on!” said Sonea while she searched in her bag for her pink gloves, yes, she had pink gloves, she only wanted to have the best and… well… Pink was the best!

“What is a Sneezeworth?” Sonea frowned and looked questioningly at Daichi, did she hear him correctly or did he say something about… Sneezing? But when Daichi told her that that Sneeze-thing was dangerous she realized that he probably talked about the plant he had put on the table. She looked at the plant and was happy that she had her gloves with her, she only hoped that the plant was not dirty, she didn’t wanted to have her gloves dirty after this. But she did what Daichi had told her, she trusted that the older boy knew what he was doing, and if not… then she was happy that she had learned a few cleaning spells!

When Sonea was done and she saw that Daichi had filled the cauldron with water she just threw the two ingredients she just had been cutting IN the cauldron and without asking Daichi if it was okay. She just assumed that she did it right and grabbed the wooden spoon and started to stir. When the wooden spoon made contact with the cauldron she heard a funny sound and without thinking she knocked again against the cauldron. And just when Sonea had done this she saw that… she saw that there were now bubbles inside the cauldron! The bubbles were funny, they were pink, *what was a good color*, blue and yellow. But even now that Sonea found the colors funny, she still wondered if this was a good thing…

“Eh, Daichi? Is it normal that there are some colored bubbles inside our cauldron?”

Now for the fun part. As should be expected, she made a face at Mo and his little statement. Pffft, she wasn't about to burn herself. There was nothing to it. "Incendio!" Seeeeee and she didn't get hurt. He should totally brag to Vivi about this, let her know she was better at spells and junk than when the girl had been coming here. "Does that fire work for you?"

Oh and he was done with the cutting! They'd just wait for it to start boiling then they could throw stuff in and hope it went BOOM it worked out perfectly and they could brag about being good potioneers.

Checking her instructions again, Sky Scourgify-ed her mortar and pestle again before adding the lavender flower. And mash, mash, mashing. Mashing flowers was easier than than mashing potatoes, of course, but it still wasn't that much fun. Still though, both were better than cleaning.

When the lavender was mashed completely, she added it to her potion. And began stirring again, this time counterclockwise. 1...2...3...4...5...6...7...8...9...10...11...12.. .13...14...15 That part was done. Next.

Jory saw the wonder in Anna's eyes as he cast the Cleaning Charm. He grinned. "Don't worry you'll learn it soon enough. All you have to do is point your wand, say the incantation and concentrate.''

"I can fill the cup with the water and you can pour it in,'' Jory said. "And no, we don't have to do anything else. Just make sure the cauldron and cup are clean.'' He examined the cup. It was clean alright. He pointed his wand over it. "This charm is used when we need water,'' he told Anna. "This one is also simple. Just point your wand where you want the water to go and say Aguamenti.'' He demonstrated. "Aguamenti!''Water flowed from his wand tip and into the cup. "Finite!'' There, the first cup. "Pour that into the cauldron, Anna.'' He watched her do so and then he continued to fill the cup again. "Would you like to try fulling the cup using the charm?''

The Puffer heard what Anna said and he went a bit red. "Well, I've been learning for years,'' he said. "Most of the credit goes to the Professors.''


Annabeth heard Jory attentively: "So, all that I need is to point the wand" she grabbed her wand and pointing to anywhere added: "and say scourgify..." she felt something emerging from the tip of her wand and suddenly the work station beside them became clean and highly polished "Oops! It works", she said, blushing, and dropped her wand on the work station. At least there was nobody there.

She would ask him where there was water but Jory seemed to read her mind and showed a incantation that made water flow from his wand, filling the cup in front of her. She sighed and did what she was told to: poured it into the cauldron.

He said she could try do it too. "Oh, really? I'll try." She took her wand and pointed to the cup on the table: "aguamenti", she cast the spell exactly as he taught her, but forgeting to say the incantation to stop it and the cup overflowed. "Jory!" she shouted "what can we do now?" She waited for him to do something with the water that was falling on the floor and said "it'd better if you cast the spells and let me filling the cauldron. At least I know how to count. With this we already have 3 cups of water, I guess..."She said, embarrassed.

She noticed Jory had blushed when she said that he made things seem to be easier and said "Jory, the teacher could be the best teacher of all the world, but if the student doesn't want to study it'll do no good..." The she added "and you're a good teacher too. I learning a lot with you!" She grinned and changed the subject, whispering, while holded the cup filled with water: "Jory, why Professor Lafay didn't reply my questions? She simply acted as if I wasn't there. I'm a first year student! How does she expect I'll learn something this way?"

And then pounce wait for someone partner-less to come in and work with him on this assignment. Nodding, the boy started to head over towards an empty desk when...

... Oh?

That should have been expected, it really should have.

It was Michael she was sitting next to after all, and it wasn't like it was the first time she had punched someone like that. Normally, though, the person on the opposite side of her fist would have been a girl, but Michael wasn't too far from one of those so she really should have expected it. Rhodes narrowed her eyes at the Gryffindor next to her and had to grit her teeth until the pain in her shin subsided. What was he wearing, boots!? She wanted to take a peek under the table to see, but she wasn't going to let on that he hurt her. "I will get you back for that."

And what better way to get him back by FORCING him to be the one who tasted their potion? Their potion that wasn't going to have the best ingredients in it. If something went wrong, then everything would be right with her.

"How am I supposed to know?" Wasn't that what they were supposed to do? Find out what their ingredients would make when put into a potion? She rolled her eyes once again and raised her hands so that she could cover her ears. Only when she was sure he was finished with his yabbering did she take her hands away. Like she cared what his ingredients did. His were better, he should have just been happy with that. No need for explanations. "We should just put all of our stuff together right into the cauldron and see what happens." Because.. what could possibly go wrong!?

Add purslane leaves. Okay then. Sky grabbed the purslane and peeled off the leaves. And dumped them into the potion. She brought the potion to a boil again and left it. Watching it, of course. Didn't want to mess it up now. Not when it was so far along and going so well. Once the leaves were finally dissolved, it was time to stir again. Clockwise.

Jory watched as Anna tried the Scouring Charm. "See? It's easy. Well done,'' he said with a grin. "The important thing is to concentrate after you've cast the spell.''

He now watched as Anna tried out the other charm. "So far so good,'' he though. But then... "I Thought too soon.'' Apparently she forgot the spell to end the floor and so now they had an overflowing cup and water spilling onto the table and then the floor. "Finite!'' he said hastily. "Don't worry about it,'' the Puffer said encouragingly. "You'll get used to it.'' He pointed his wand to the water on the table."Tergeo!'' The water vanished as it was siphoned off. He did the same to the water on the floor.

"Okay, let's get back to the potion,'' Jory said. He quickly measured out the remaining six cups and Anna poured them into the cauldron. "Add the three caterpillars, Anna and then I'll light the burner.''

"Well, I guess so,'' the seventh year added. He always tried to be a good student. He grinned. "Well, I've only got a few more months left, so I hope you'll be able to learn lots more before then.'' And here was a question Jory did not know the answer to. "Er...no,'' he told the first year truthfully. "I really don't know.''

"The fire works," Mo agreed, giving it a brief glance. It was obvious he HAD hit a small nerve with Lex, and it sort of spoke volumes about her maturing over the past term that she didn't bite his head off about it. "Now we'll just wait for it to boil..." he peered into the cauldron, but they had only just yet achieved a simmer.

"Maybe you can pick out the Abraxan hairs from this clump here. I just pulled a bunch of hair out of the door hinge in the barn, and there's obviously some silvery-white hair in there that belongs to Barlow's unicorns. We only want the plain white hair... the Abraxan hair." That was a sort of difficult task, but he suspected that Lex was up to it.

"I'm thinking what we're going for here is a resolve-strengthening potion. Erm... a Stubbornness Potion, if you will." The water started to bubble and Mo scrapped in first the ginger and then the dandelion roots, pausing to stir once clockwise in between. "We'll want to drop in the cockroaches whole later... how many chicken feathers do you want to add?"

For a second there. Just a teeny tiny second, he actually felt sorry for her. He hadn't actually held back with that kick, but then she hadn't held back with her punch so they were even in his mind. And besides he didn't think she was the type to go off crying about it and he was sure that she wouldn't let him get away with it either. Which she confirmed seconds later with her comment. Michael couldn't help but grin at her. "Bring it on Merivel!!"

He would look forward to that.

"Then we have your ingredients." He refrained from rolling his eyes. "The spider's web we can use for its elasticity and protection. We could probably put the dirt in last to make a kind of mud mask. The cat fur could add a soft kind of texture I suppose. I haven't worked out what we could do with the Ice Mice though."

Since she bought it. She could think of something.

It might not even happen during this school year! Rhodes wasn't the most patient of people, but seeing as it was something she really wanted to get done, she would wait years. And it was going to be so worth it.

She was already smirking to herself at how frustrated he was seeming to be with her, and hearing his comment about not getting marks, she raised her shoulders up in a shrug. She didn't really care about getting good marks, or any really, but apparently he was one of those. And since she had went to him, she supposed they needed to do this all the right way. "Do you know a lot about beauty products?" Her smirk was visible now.

It was actually a good idea, though, a really good idea. But she not was going to let him know that.

As for what the ice mice could be used for.. "What if we added that very last?" Rhodes picked up the candy and placed it right against Michael's cheek. "Doesn't it feel kinda cold? That should be good for your skin, right?" She was always told to wash her face with cold water, after all.. "Or it could be used just to make the potion smell nice." And if he wanted to smell it, she'd have no problem with sticking it up his nose so he could.

"I don't think it should be like this." Laura sighed as she looked at the potion. "I think you might be right." Laura took out her wand. "AH-gwə-MEN-tee!!" Now that the puff girl had added some sizeable amount of water, the thickness of the potion subsided slowly into a rather thin one. Still it wasn't that immaculate like her fathers potions. TUT-TUT. "Alright.." And she took out the last of her ingredients, the nettles. She didn't know if it was a good idea to drop ALL their ingredients into the potion. "Should we really use EVERY ingredient we have?" she asked, as she three the nettles into the cauldron.

The potion turned green again. Alright, nice color. And it wasn't thick as before, it maintained the same texture. So far so good! "We're done then?" That'd be great. Now the testing part. "I think only one of us should try the potion...." she trailed. "..that way, if something went wrong, the other can help 'em out" And she would do the trying part cause she couldn't figure out what she'd do as help. "I'll try it" she offered, with the brave lion smile.

Not that he was at that age where he was bothered by that stuff, but his dad was rather particular about his looks and stuff. "And use products to help them with that." And before she could even say anything else. "And no I don't use them."

So she wasn't as dumb as she looked. The Ice Mice did feel cool against his skin. "Yeah it does." he admitted grudgingly. That's about as much praise as she was going to get from him. "Okay, we need to get some water into the cauldron." Did she know how to do the water charm? He wasn't that confident with it yet. Of course she didn't know that... "We'll add the fluxweed first because it will need to stew for a while."

That was probably enough to go on for the leeches, he thought. His eyes then fell on the daisy and he started searching through the book again when he heard a voice speaking his name beside him. "Hey, Alec," Ethan said with a grin as he noticed the Hufflepuff boy sanding next to him. "No.. no partner.. I was actually waiting around till someone who needed a partner showed up. I guess it's your lucky day," he said sort of jokingly as he chuckled. Of course, that was assuming that Alec wanted to work with him, but he was there asking so that's what it meant, right?

He slid some of his things over to make room for the other boy. "So what ingredients did you collect?" Ethan looked up at him, curiously as he gestured towards his own. "I have leeches, a daisy with its root, a chocolate frog, and mandrake leaves." Hopefully Alec had something to balance it all out.. but he was at least glad to be working with someone so they could at least bounce ideas off of each other.

When the wooden spoon made contact with the cauldron she heard a funny sound and without thinking she knocked again against the cauldron. And just when Sonea had done this she saw that… she saw that there were now bubbles inside the cauldron! The bubbles were funny, they were pink, *what was a good color*, blue and yellow. But even now that Sonea found the colors funny, she still wondered if this was a good thing…

“Eh, Daichi? Is it normal that there are some colored bubbles inside our cauldron?”



Daichi could not help but laugh softly when he noticed that Sonea took out a pair of PINK gloves from her bag. He also knew that she had a pink rat so figured that pink must be one of her favorite colors. The Slytherin didn't like it though. It reminded him of the Headmistress and she was a meanie who slapped Mr.Duckles! Yes, even after almost two years he still hadn't forgotten...

This was one of the first times that Sarah was making her own potion. She really wanted to be able to use a recipe or something, it would have made her more confident. Yet now she felt so nervous and all. What if it does not work out?

She looked at the ingreidients before her and sighed. She could not believe that she had to use all of them... What should she make? Maybe a healing potion for vampires, as the fangs of the biting toadstool were the healing part and vampires liked all things blood flavoured. She got more excited as she realized that she would add ginger too and that would make it more healing. And then a sudden reminder caused her excitement to deflate. What would she do with the eagle owl feathers? No vampire would like that, only a dragon wo-. Wait she had it. As the feathers were needed for a dragon tonic which was also a healing potion, then she could make her own dragon tonic with the biting toadstools and the ginger adding more healing properties. And the blood? Maybe for taste. Wasn't there a dragon that like eating humans, the Chinese Fireball was its name. So the blood could just be a taste thing in order to entice the dragon to take the tonic and disguise it.

Sonea’s smile widened when she heard Daichi’s chuckle and she knew that he liked her pink gloves, she was sure that he liked them! Everybody needed to like the color pink! Even her mother liked pink, and that was strange because they had not much in common, Sonea and her mother almost didn’t liked anything from each other, so if mom liked pink like Sonea, than it was really a good color!

“Reckless? I don’t want that…” Sonea hated to be reckless, people who were reckless were having almost always problems and she didn’t trusted them, so if this potion would make her reckless she was hesitant to taste it. And… She wondered if it was a good idea to make a potion from a poisoned plant, and Daichi had just told her that that Sneeze-thing was dangerous! Sonea looked around her and wondered if there was somebody who wanted to taste their potion if she didn’t wanted to do it, but she was afraid that nobody would do it, only a stupid person would taste a potion from somebody else with a something in it what was poisoned! She wouldn’t have done it…

“Oh, get that thing away from me!” Shouted Sonea and hide behind the cauldron and on the other side than where Daichi was standing, with his UGLY and DIRTY spider! “Is it death?” She looked warily at the spider but it didn’t seemed to move anymore. She hoped that the spider was death, and if he was not than she would send Little princess to the spider to kill it! She was still worried fro Little princess because she seemed to be sick but she was sure that she still was able to kill every spider she wanted!

The young girl watched Daichi and wondered if he was worried or not because of the colored bubbles but he seemed to be relaxed about it, so Sonea was not worried anymore. “Yes, it is indeed really pretty, but I like only the pink bubbles, the other colors are not having the right colors” said Sonea while she pointed with her finger INSIDE the cauldron and let all the bubbles burst except the pink ones.

“Eh, I don’t know, I have stirred at last stirred at last four or five times, in different directions…” Sonea looked satisfied at her work and found that the potion was now more pretty than before, with only the pink bubbles left inside the cauldron. “Oh, look at my finger!” Sonea stared surprised at the finger she had used to burst the bubbles and saw that it was colored brown? “Uhg, that is a ugly color…” muttered Sonea.

Jory watched as Anna tried the Scouring Charm. "See? It's easy. Well done,'' he said with a grin. "The important thing is to concentrate after you've cast the spell.''

He now watched as Anna tried out the other charm. "So far so good,'' he though. But then... "I Thought too soon.'' Apparently she forgot the spell to end the floor and so now they had an overflowing cup and water spilling onto the table and then the floor. "Finite!'' he said hastily. "Don't worry about it,'' the Puffer said encouragingly. "You'll get used to it.'' He pointed his wand to the water on the table."Tergeo!'' The water vanished as it was siphoned off. He did the same to the water on the floor.

"Okay, let's get back to the potion,'' Jory said. He quickly measured out the remaining six cups and Anna poured them into the cauldron. "Add the three caterpillars, Anna and then I'll light the burner.''

"Well, I guess so,'' the seventh year added. He always tried to be a good student. He grinned. "Well, I've only got a few more months left, so I hope you'll be able to learn lots more before then.'' And here was a question Jory did not know the answer to. "Er...no,'' he told the first year truthfully. "I really don't know.''


'The three sliced caterpillars?' She asked as she was already taking the caterpillars and putting them into the cauldron as Jory had said.

'It'd be a pity having your company in such a short time...' she said thoughtfully. 'By the way, Jory, I like to hear you calling me Anna. My mum used to call me Anna when she was angry with me and everybody called me Bee. I was thinking about to ask you call me Bee, but it's nice that now Anna is not a name which gives me goose bumps." She grinned and took a piece of parchment where she made some notes about the spells he had taught her:

It was a proud moment for her so she said thanks even though it probably wasn't a compliment but more a stated fact. Eh, she heard what she wanted to.

And like he said, they'd be waiting, not something she was good at unless she was kept occupied--which Mo was being very helpful with at the moment! "Sure, no problem." And she got set to picking out only the white hairs. Some of them got tangled real bad and at one point she was tempted to simply yank them apart but that might have damaged the hairs.

Resolve-strengthening...? She thought to ask but in the next breath he was explaining it simpler.

"That'll be neat, especially if it actually works." Hard to believe but now she was actually hoping the cauldron wouldn't blow up. Lex watched him add the first few ingredients. "We should add all six of them because quite frankly I nearly lost my hand plucking them in the first place." Live chickens were fierce!!!

"When should I add these hairs?"

She gave her friend a moment to get her information out about her ingredients and gave their work station a quick cleaning in the meantime. "Scourgify!" There. Now the table was nice and clean. It was a start at least.



Minerva smiled, she didn’t think Eliza was really waiting on her, but it was nice to feel like someone really needed her. “Well I’m here and I would love to be your partner.” Finding a seat she pulled her potions book and parchment out.


Looking at her ingredients she sighed a bit, “This has been a really hard assignment, but I think the lavender is used for like stress relieving or a relaxation property. The chocolate bar is usually part of like the love spell so it probably brings out the happiness and stuff, because well chocolate does that, but I guess it could just help the potion taste better maybe.” Looking at the other two she had to think more, “The Jalapeno could be used for focusing or making things stronger and then the acorns could be to bring strength for the potion.” Looking over at Eliza she hoped that it sounded right at least. Usually Min was pretty good at potions, she loved to spend time in the lab, but she had to be honest she was terrified of this lesson.


Biting her lip she looked at all eight ingredients. “Let me check my book.” She opened her book and skimmed through it. There had to be something in here they could use or at least maybe get an idea from. Then looking back at the ingredients she gave a small smile, “Now tell me if you think I’m way off, but most of these ingredients are naturish..” was that even a word and why was she thinking nature, had Ethan gotten into her head that much. Smiling at the thought she went on, “anyway, I’m wondering if we could make a potion that went along with nature or maybe even made someone better at Herbology.” Now she knew her thoughts had been interfered by her herbologist boyfriend.

Looking at Eliza she wondered if the claw would like the idea or think maybe she was just nuts. “So what do you think?”

"Sorry" he said and closed his hand so that she wouldn't see it. "It's dead..." he then answered her next question and decided to put it back inside the vial again.

"I think we should add the spider last, the finishing touch!" he grinned. What harm could that do right? She had stirred the potion a few times left and right without counting? Daichi slapped his forehead mentally.

He began to open the vial of the owl feathers now and took out three of them. He threw one in the cauldron, the second one and...

"What are you doing?!" he shrieked as he saw how the girl put her finger inside the cauldron and showed him the brown...stuff. Ewww. "Don't EVER touch a potion like that!" he warned, his voice was suddenly different. More authority like. Must be because of the badge pinned to his uniform. "It's dangerous, especially because we don't know what kind of potion this is, you could have melted your finger or ..i don't know.. maybe it could have grown to the size of an cat or something?"

He sighed heavily as he ran his fingers through his hair. Was it just him or was it getting hotter in here? He wiped the sweat from his forehead and looked at Sonea again. "Does it hurt?" he asked, pointing to her finger.

Relieved that the spider was death she relaxed and walked back to Daichi, she didn’t thought that she was overreacting with her fear for the spider, she KNEW that they could be very dangerous! But now that she saw that the spider was trapped inside the jar and she knew that he was death, she was brave enough to come closer to it. But… She hoped that Daichi would keep it with him until the last moment and she wanted that Daichi would add the spider to the potion, she would NEVER touch a spider, death of alive!

“I think that that is the best idea I have heard for a long time” Smiled Sonea when Daichi had suggested that he would add the spider at the last moment to the potion. “But, will you add it to the potion, I will not touch it!” A few minutes later she saw how Daichi had added his feathers to the cauldron, just when she saw that her fingers were brown.

“Why? We have just started, so I assumed that the potion was not dangerous…” She had JUST added the ingredients to it, the potion wasn’t even ready, so why should it be dangerous? “Oh, my finger is not hurting, it is ugly, but It’s not hurting… I think that I just need to wash them to remove the brown color.” Sonea spoke lightly and was not worried at all!

I mean... properties-wise?"

As for him... "Apart from the daisy and its root," Maybe they could use double the amount? Whatever daisies were good for. "I have some nettles, a vial of bubotuber pus and... a vial of flobberworm mucus! The last three are good for healing potions, I think." Unless Ethan already knew that. Alec wouldn't put it past the Ravenclaw to already know that.

... "So... what do you think we can do with the ingredients?"

As Anna was adding the sliced caterpillars to the cauldron, Jory set up the burner. He needed to set it to medium temperature. "Incendio!'' he said and make the complicated wand movement. A fire ignited and he adjusted the burner. "There,'' he said. While the ingredients were heating, the Puffer cleaned the wooden spoon they would use to stir. Now, it was time to stir. He started ''One..two...three..four...five...six...seven...'' All anti clockwise. The burner was now turned off. "Add the daises in, Anna, and you can stir it three times clockwise after you do that,'' he said.

"I didn't know you had another name,'' Jory responded. "But as you like Anna, that I shall call you.'' Smile. "Oh, you just point your wand.'' Jory liked that Anna was such a keen student. She'd make a great student.

*Gulp*

Before Amara could say anything Laura had got a cup and had got some of the potion and drunk it.

"EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!"

Laura thought it tasted like sour eggs, she closed her eyes and refused to open them.

"What has it done Amara? Is it safe to open my eyes?"

Annabeth added to her notes where it was written the tergeo spell a signal that means equal, which to her meant that she must only point her wand to cast the spell. The first year did it quickly in order to avoid wasting time with taking notes instead of brewing the potion. Jory had being so kind she wouldn't want disappoint him doing silly things.

"Call me Anna. Anna sounds good in your voice." She smiled covering her mouth with her hands. It could have not sounded as she wished, she looked at the cauldron, then to the work station and picked up the daisies "Daisies, time to bath" she said in a musical voice looking to the daisies, while she put them into the cauldron, then added:"Now, the dance of daisies and caterpillars." She grinned and began to stir the cauldron three times clockwise.

"Jory!!! It's yellow! The most wonderful yellow I've ever seen!" Her eyes filled with tears while she watched the potion with wonder and amazement, still holding tightly the wooden spoon.

Daichi stared at the twelve year old girl in disbelieve after hearing her words of not thinking the potion could be dangerous. But that was just the thing. HOW would she know if it was not dangerous? To him her action had been very like a recklessly Gryffindor.

And again he wanted to slap his forehead but refrained from doing so. "If it hadn't been a potion the water would still be clear and the ingredients would have just been floating on the water surface and since its not doing any of that, its a potion. Which means it CAN be dangerous." she got it now? he hoped so because he did NOT want to say that again.... "But i'm glad your finger is alright"

"But please promise me this, don't touch a potion like that ever again" he whispered but loud enough for the girl to hear. He then gave a smile and turned around to look at their left over ingredients.

Motherwort, Jobberknoll feather, knotgrass and a spider. He checked his watched and figured that they should hurry up. He opened the jar of jobberknoll feather and placed it on the wooden spoon. He slowly sank it in to the cauldron and decided to turn three times clockwise and one time anti-clockwise. It was something right? And the potion DID change. Not the color but there seemed to be more smoke coming out of the cauldron now. Whether that was good or bad , he had no idea!

"Ehm, right" he said a liiiiitle nervously. He then gave the motherwort to Sonea and placed his own ingrediënt the knotgrass in front of him. He saw that there were tiny little flowers on the motherwort plant and looked at Sonea. "Maybe the color of the potion will change if we pluck the purple flowers on that plant and add them to the cauldron" he said. It was just an suggestion, rather than just chopping it up. Of course the girl could decided whether she wanted to do that or not. He himself grabbed a mortar, cleaned it with Scourgify and began to smash the knotgrass in to a pulp.

"How should we name this potion anyways?" he asked.

And checking her instructions again. Which said to grate ginger over the cauldron, using her own judgement to determine a pinch. Sky cast a Scourgify over the grater and grabbed the ginger, holding it over her potion.


Grate...grate...grate....grate

And there was a pinch. Now to stir it until the ginger was mixed in. Which took about five minutes. Blegh. At least her potion had a pretty pleasant scent. That was good, right? Especially since it would be going on people's skin. Leaving to it to thicken, she started cleaning up the tools that she had used and preparing the containers for her potion.

Annabeth was quite happy by noticing their potion was doing well, exactly as they wanted to. She heard Jory's instructions and replied, putting the smashed horned slug into the cauldron while sang: "Bewaaaare! Disgusting smashy-slug is taking a bath!!!" she smiled, then her smile disappeared: "It's really a pity that it'll turn into pink in a few minutes... This red is perfect!"

Anna took the wooden spoon and stirred the potion twice clockwise, then stoped. She checked time in her watch and added: "in the instructions is said that we should stir it every 2 minutes, for 12 minutesor or until it turns light pink. So we must wait." And sighed looking at his friend. He was gazing at her with a friendly smile on his face; she smiled back. "You don't mind if I keep joking, do you? I'm excited but I'm still worried, I want to do everything right and... oh, it's time to stir! One... two. Done. Now, waiting again."

She looked at the table and found the fresh nettles already crushed still in the mortar. "I think we must have it nearby just in case the colour changing before the 12 minutes." Annabeth was bringing it close to the cauldron, when she bumped the mortar against Jory's Potions book. The book fell on the floor open, she took it and read in the top of the page: "Jory Stonewall. It's not a coincidence, Jory? You're Stonewall and I'm Glasswall!Oh, stirring time: one... two. Done." She stirred clockwise just as she needed to do. "I was saying: if you're Stonewall and I'm Glasswall, so we're two walls brewing a potion!" She laughed: "it's weird! Oh, Jory! Look at this: the colour is changing!" She was peering the potion's surface, where there were some pink dots emerging.

When the first year was about to stir the potion once again, it became pink and she knew it was time to add the fresh nettles. She added 15 scoops carefully as they had written in the instruction and waited for Jory casting the spell to turn on the burner.

And she had the potion on before Amara could protest. "LAURA!" she could only shout the girl's name. What had she thought? Taking responsibility? She hadn't considered the fact that the little girl before her couldn't help her if something had gone wrong.

She flinched at the "Eww" from Laura. Her look was that of total shock. "What did you think?" her voice had an edge of exasperation. "That I could pull up some wonderful spell if something goes wrong..?"

Which reminds them of the problem in hand. The puff girl had her eyes closed. Amara eyed her with discrete scrutiny. Nothing was wrong. Her face was still hers. "It seems fine....." she trailed. And there! Her hair started to change color. So did her eyebrows. "Uhm....Laura, you're hair is changing color" she said, her voice uncertain. "Its.....uhm,...olive? eh..no, orange? It turned...." OH! "Laura, it's just shifting through color after color!" And the little girl was SO excited. "We made a color shift potion!" WOOOT! She could dance! They made a potion without any side effects. Yet, that was. "Do you have any eerie feeling..? Sick?" Hopefully she should not.

Time to start the Potions Homework.

Since there was no essay to write and no cleaning to do, Gwen was actually pleased with the task. Just brewing a potion. Hmm. Inventing a potion better said. The seventh year casually made her way to the classroom, and headed to her seat. On her way, she spotted the flying note. After reading it quickly, the seventh year decided to set up her workstation and start brewing a potion.

Well... let’s see..., she told herself, eyeing the four ingredients on the desk, and the piece of parchment on which she had scribbled a few notes. The peppermint seemed to have been a good choice, since it is used in numerous potions. Mostly because of its healing effect. Moving on. The nettles... Those were used in the Boil-Cure Potion. It probably wasn’t necessary to figure out the potions in which these ingredients were used, but it was easier to discover a new potion based on already known information. Gwen then glimpsed at the caterpillar in the jar. That was used in shrinking solutions. Used in, but not limited to potions with some transformations. And her final ingredient- the polypody. Seriously. Out of all the ingredients she could have picked, she took a POLYPODY.

Sigh.

She’ll have to figure out something for that. Hmm. According to her notes, that ingredient was used for remedies. Pause. Thinking of a potion for which she could combine all these ingredients. Moment of silence.

Got it!

She used a non-verbal ‘Scourgify’ to clean the cauldron and utensils. So- which should be the first step? Since they were allowed to add water to the potion, Gwen figured it was a good thing to start with. ‘Aguamenti’, she pointed her wand at the cauldron and watched it fill with water. So far, so good.
