Botros was busy working on a parchment on his desk, his tongue sticking a bit out at the corner of his mouth in deep focus. Until one of the students dropped their wood piece and startled him. He took in his surroundings, remembering they were still in class and noticed one of the younger boys staring around him, confused. Quote:
"Do you need any help over there?" Botros waved at him, a small smile etched on his face. "Why don't you show me what you wrote so far?" He patted his desk and waited for the boy. "Anyone who would like to double-check their work--" Preferably from the younger years only, "--can come over, too." |
Quote:
He was offering to check their work!! Granted she was already done and thought she'd done a wonderful job but there was no harm in He would give her a shoulder pat...right???? 'Cause like, she didn't hurt herself or anyone else with the tool but never got one for that. She finished her work somewhat quietly and NEVER GOT PATS FOR THAT!! There wasn't much else she could do you know. Lex hopped over to his desk with the widest of grins on her face and showed him her earlier rough draft, the one that came before she actually wrote them neatly and gave them to Cassia. It was good. Riiiiiiiiiiiiight? Shoulder pat now? |
post 4 and Botros! Alec's name in runes. Okay, this shouldn't be too hard. The blonde pulled her notes towards her once again and eyed them carefully. When she felt like she knew what she was meant to do, she began writing it out. SPOILER!!: Notes When she finished, she tapped her chin and looked down at her work critically. Was that right? Luckily, Professor Botros spoke up not long after and offered to check people's work. The blonde smiled and grabbed her parchment, bringing it up to him. "Professor, would you mind taking a look at my notes?" Nervous smile and all. She hadn't messed this up, had she? |
Post 1 Theo could seriously feel a headache coming along, especially when Professor Botros started talking and wouldn't STOP talking. He did pay attention, though, since Ancient Runes was one of those classes that he usually sucked that. Had to sort it out with OWLs coming up next year and such. When he had finished explaining, Theo looked around the room for someone. Hmmmmmm... Ella was easy. He picked up his quill and tapped it against his parchment for a few minutes, with his mind going blank. His eyes skimmed over his textbook, but that didn't help much either. Oh, the board. Ok.... Theo eyed each letter, and the rune that was written beside them. When he got moving, it surprised him how much he had gotten it. First, he removed one of the L's from Ella's name, because that wasn't needed, RIGHT? Quote:

When he arrived at the professors desk, he placed his parchment down for Professor Botros to see. Quote:

Post 2 Theo was going for simplicity here, because his brain felt like it was on overdrive. He bit the bottom of his quill when he tried to think of a message relating to Ella. Maybe he could write that she was cool... or good at Quidditch... or pretty? No... no... god forbid him writing that. Deciding that everything was lame, he went for something equally as lame without realizing it. Quote:

Theo cleared his throat dramatically, picked up his Burin and got ready. |
Quote:
Botros pulled the parchment closer to him and fixed his glasses on his nose bridge. "Eihwaz is for the long 'I', such as the pronoun 'I'. Your name is Asher, is that correct?" The man had forgotten the boy's name (like usual) but he'd guessed from the runic scribble on the parchment. "So you use Ehwaz the one equivalent to 'e'." he pointed behind him on the tablet written on the blackboard. Text Cut: Lexa "Hello miss Cambridge, let me see." He took the parchment from her hands gently and pushed his glasses up on his nose. "Good job, good job. There is a tiny mistake though, how do you write 'are' in a phonetic form? Do we pronounce the 'e'? Are..." He said it for her. "Same goes with 'friend'. What do you hear when I say it? Friend.." He repeated slowly and handed her a quill. "Write what you hear." He waited with a gentle look on his face. Text Cut: Ella Clasping his hands on top of desk, Botros nodded with a smile at the Hufflepuff Captain. "Sure, come on closer." He had high expectations for this one. |
Post 3 Soooo... onwards with carving his name. First up was Thurisaz, which represented the first two letters of course. Theo flicked open his textbook and skimmed down the page to find it, and it didn't take long. The chant looked relatively easy, too. He was grateful that he had a chance to practice chanting rune songs beforehand, because now they were kind of in his head. "thurisaz thurisaz thurisaz, th th th th th th th th th, thur thar thur ther thor, thu tha thu the tho, th th th th th th th th th." This one was surprisingly easy due to the 'th' noise that he was used to. He GRINNED when it carved into his wood. First try, man. Awesome. Next up was, Ehwaz. One that he recognized, but had never chanted before. He cleared his throat once again, after finding it in his textbook. "ehwo ehwo ehwo... e e e e h w o o o, ehwu ehwa ehwi ehwe ehwo... ehwo ehwe ehwi ehwa ehwu... e e e e h w o o o." He paused a little at each line on this one, and nothing really happened like it had done before, so Theo tried it again. "ehwo ehwo ehwo, e e e e h w o o o, ehwu ehwa ehwi ehwe ehwo, ehwo ehwe ehwi ehwa ehwu, e e e e h w o o o." Perfect! He was pretty much done, just one more to go! Because come on, he wasn't gonna write Theodore, was he? EFFORT MUCH? What's next? Oooh... Othala. OH - this one looked tricky. |
Post 5 Quote:
SPOILER!!: Notes "I think I got most of the runes right, Sir. I'm just not sure about the phonetic forms of the words." And she frowned at her notes before looking back up at the man nervously. Oh gosh, she wasn't going to disappoint him, was she? |
Post 4 "othala othal othal" Well... that part was sorted. For some reason, Theo carried on to say a long, "oooooooooooo", which wasn't exactly right. He frowned and stopped to start again. The Slytherin took a moment to read over the chant, like he had done previously, taking mental notes of how the longer sounds went and how he could put it all together. It worked pretty well for him actually. He cleared his throat and had another go. "othala othal othal, o o o o o o o o o, o o o o o o, othul othal othil othel othol, othol othel othil othal othul, o o o o o o" Not a bad job there, Theo. There it was! His name in runes! He was sure that he had seen his name in runes before, but it was still exciting. He had a cool runes name, even if it didn't resemble the English word at all. With a nod, Theo put down his Burin and placed his carved piece of wood gently away from him so that he could put the finishing touches on his note to Ella. Because there were a few words that he had missed off. Only little words, though, so that meant he was pretty much finished! |
Post #2 So... he needed to start writing this out in hand form first, yeah? And then convert it and then... carve it onto the wood. That was actually one of those 'easier said than done' notions. Yeah... ANYWAYS. Person. He tapped the end of his quill against his chin and frowned down at his piece of parchment. It was weird because... what was he meant to say in this mini letter? 'Hey, I think you're cool'? She probably already knew that, though. And it couldn't be too long either because then he'd be here ALL. DAY. Frown. Deciding on something he had told her before, Alec started scribbling something down. There. Not too long and not too short either. And completely 100% true too! Text Cut: Parchment ... Was this... even right or...? |
Post 5 With his textbook directly beside him, Theo skimmed down the page to find some of the missing words and runes from his message. He separated each of the words with a comma to make things easier to read. Not just for Ella, but for him, too. This was confusing stuff! Not taking too long at all, Theo finished his message. Quote:
Did he need to write the translation underneath? Or was that Ella's job to find out what he had written? Gosh, that would be tricky. Hopefully no one would write HIM a message... |
Lex then Botros. Quote:
And she kinda got bored so she started looking around and watching others either carving, chanting or squinting at books. Heh. Good thing she was done. Then turning back to Lex she grinned and took the letter. Whut? Still friends? Cassia rolled her eyes at the lioness, "Really?" She said pointing to the letter. "Should I have been worried about that because I hid the parchment from you?" Because she wasn't? ANYWAY! "But I'm still flattered," She said reaching for the piece of wood that had her name.....or three letters of her name. She didn't get to complain, though, because she did the same. Then Professor Botros checked her work. Ooops. Cassia just noticed the 'e'. "Better scratch those unnecessary runes,"She whispered nodding. And it wasn't that hard so it was a relief. And now she wondered about her own. She took the letter and went to the Professor's desk. "Mind seeing mine, Professor?" She asked putting it before him and not really giving him a chance to say no. |
SPOILER!!: Cassia and Botros Yeah she saw how this was. You get one thing wrong and suddenly it's 'no shoulder pats for you'. Pffffft, she was onto him and his game. Depriving her like this but she wouldn't say she knew in case it was meant to be a secret of some sort... Her attention went back to Cassia who was telling her to scribble them out, nah, she'd just rewrite them. They would look less messy that way. This would only take her a minute. Lex got her parchment then found herself riiiiiiiiiiiiight by the Professor again. SPOILER!!: Parchment There! Now she was done. Lex took her wood back, rip off the other piece of parchment and attached the new one. "That should do it." Nod. "You have friend in your note. See why you should have just let me copy yours?" Then they wouldn't be having her repeat stuff. There was a lesson to be learnt her Cassia. |
Text Cut: Ella He pulled her parchment closer and looked through his tiny glasses, "Yes, most scholars have issues with phonetics." Good thing he didn't let them study Scandinavian first to learn how they exactly pronounced things. "Marvelous!" He announced with a wide smile and looked over his glasses at the blonde Captain. "They're perfect. Your hand will get used to drawing the runes in time, but you did this perfectly. Great job." He patted her shoulder and handed her the parchment back. First one with no mistakes! Text Cut: Theo Oh! He recognized the Slytherin at once, and Botros kept his gentle smile on his face as he inspected the parchment. Knowing the kid, he expected something flawed, not because Kinsley was a bad student but because he had little patience for something like Runes. But this, the runic script on this parchment, was actually perfect Text Cut: Cassia "Why, yes, of course dear. Come." He took the next girl's parchment and fixed his glasses back on his nose. Oooh those Slytherins were on a roll, it seemed. He gave her the same wide smile as Mr. Kinsely before, "Great job, Ms. Somerlad! How wonderful." PATPATPATPAT. They all needed more practice in drawing and carving those runes but it was alright, they were learning. Text Cut: Lexa Botros nodded as the Gryffindor fixed her mistakes, "Very good, very very good. Now your work is perfect as well." He placed a hand on her shoulder gently. "Your carving is pretty good, too. See how the Burin makes a smoother look than the Intaglio spell? But not with everyone. Some people find the spell easier and produce smoother shapes." He, personally, liked the Burin. And she got this clarification because she asked about it before. He might be a forgetful person but he would never forget anything runes or student related! |
Quote:
"Hi, Ella...." He dropped it very awkwardly in front of her, probably totally distracting her from her own work but oh well, "It's for you." And then he disappeared back to his table. |
Post 2 (Question!) Alright so he had to write in Runes. He was gonna write his name first so he knew what his name looked liked when he wrote it in the runes language. SPOILER!!: Kace's Notebook! YAY! He figured out to spell his name! That was an improvement so far. Now he wanted to write his letter to Cassia. He wondered what he could write to her? He thought and then had an idea! He began to form his letter first! SPOILER!!: Parchment! There that letter looked official enough. Short and Sweet! Now onto decoding the letter.... SPOILER!!: Decoding! He hoped he did the decoding right! And hoped he could get the carving right! He would ask, "Professor did i do the decoding right?" he asked unsure. |
Post 6 SPOILER!!: Botros! Ella watched nervously over Professor Botros' shoulder and bit her lip. Had she done things right? Meeeeep. The blonde nodded when she heard him comment on scholars, a little relieved that she wasn't the only one who struggled with the phonetics stuff. That was good to know. Also good? How wide he was smiling at her right now. BEAM! "I...really?!" She couldn't hide her surprise as she looked from her parchment to the Professor and back again. She did it! And she did it perfectly. Did he know how much this meant to her? DID HE? GRIN! "I...thank you, Sir. I'm really happy to hear that." And she again stifled the urge to tackle!hug the older man as she took back her parchment. "I'll just...go carve my name, then." Sheepish Ella felt sheepish now. ... Once she was settled back in her seat, the blonde glanced down at her notes and decided to add her name in there. She'd originally thought she would be carving Alec's name into the wood but now that she was carving her own, she wanted to practice first. Scribble. Scribble. Scribble. SPOILER!!: Notes Double checking her work, Ella was happy to see that she'd done a good job leaving out the second L and her name looked pretty good to her. This wasn't so bad at all, this writing in runes stuff. Maybe she'd write Oakey a letter in runes before he left? She knew he'd appreciate it so it was definitely something to think about. Pulling the second piece of wood towards her, the blonde flipped her textbook to the right page and picked up her Burin again. Ehwaz first. And.... "ehwo ehwo ehwo e e e e h w o o o ehwu ehwa ehwi ehwe ehwo ehwo ehwe ehwi ehwa ehwu e e e e h w o o o!" Carve. Carve. Carveeeeee. "ehwo ehwo ehwo e e e e h w o o o ehwu ehwa ehwi ehwe ehwo ehwo ehwe ehwi ehwa ehwu e e e e h w o o o!" Done! And she'd just need to do a few mo- Theo? "Hey Theoman!" BEAM! Wait...huh? "I..." But he was already leaving. Okay, then. "Thanks!" She called after him, giving him a smile. |
Post #3 Now... he had to carve his name, yeah? Onto the piece of wood? But should he carve 'Alec' or 'Hair Boy'? Alec would be easier but... Hair Boy was her nickname for him. And she would understand who it was from if he carved that onto the piece of wood. ... HAIR BOY IT WAS. ... Because... he was proud of the ruffliness of his hair today. And Candy Girl liked that nickname. Text Cut: Parchment! He looked back at the parchment and smiled. Okay. He just needed to carve seven runes. That wasn't... too bad, yeah? His flipped through his textbook until he reached the page where the Hagalaz Galdr was written out. H's... weren't too bad to chant along too. At it wasn't 'r'. Yet. Frowns for you, Raidho. He picked up his Burin and the wood and held the two up in the same sot of stance as before. Chant and carve... chant and carve... "Hagalaz hagalaz hagalaz... h h h h h h h h h... hu ha hi he ho... hug hag hig heg hog... oh eh ih ah uh... h h h h h h h h h..." This was meant to glow too, right? Glow! Why aren't you-- Oh hey! GRIN. Next... was... Ansuz. He peeked at his textbook quickly and blinked. Aw? As in that sound people made when they found something cute? "Ansuz ansuz ansuz... aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw..." There... were a lot of these 'aw' sounds. Breaaaaathe... And where was he up to, exactly? "... aw aw aw aw aw aw s s s s s s... aw aw aw aw aw aw... aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw..." BLINK. BLINK. Could he stop now? No? Frowning, he stayed silent for a while, looking at the next Galdr in the textbook. Isa. EE-SAW. It represented masculinity or something which... well, he was a boy but he was no Superman. And he wasn't authoritative, which was something else that was written next to the magical effects part in the textbook. No way. Candy Girl probably had more authority than him. ... Moving on... Chant and carve... "Iisa isa... i i i i i i i i i... i i i i i i s s s s s s... i i i i i i i i i..." So many 'I' sounds. But what was worse was that next was Raidho and that meant 'r' sounds which meant that the rolling of the tongue. He'd rather have Wunjo. Wunjo was an AWESOME rune. "Rraidho raidho... r r r r r r r r r... ru ra ri re ro... rudh radh ridh redh rodh... or er ir ar ur... r r r r r r r r r..." Carve... carve... carve... And... that... was only half of it. |
post 7 and Alec Ella's concentration was totally broken. The blonde eyed the block of wood and parchment that Theo had left, head tilted to the side. Him writing her a letter was a good thing though, yeah? Just like her picking him to share ice cream with in Charms was good. It meant that this friends thing was working out after all? Yeah. Now...she'd just need to wait to finish her stuff before reading the message. Next up, Laguz. "laguz laguz laguz l l l l l l l l l lu la li ke lo (lug lag lig leg log) ul al il el ol lo le li la lu l l l a a a g g g u u u l l l l l l l l l!" Carve. Carve. "laguz laguz laguz l l l l l l l l l lu la li ke lo (lug lag lig leg log) ul al il el ol lo le li la lu l l l a a a g g g u u u l l l l l l l l l!" And then on to Ansuz. "ansuz ansuz ansuz aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw s s s s s s aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw!" Carveeeeee. "ansuz ansuz ansuz aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw s s s s s s aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw!" Done! BEAM! Now she had her block of wood and her message and she attatched them together before getting up and walking over to Alec. He wouldn't mind the interruption, right? Ahem. "Hey, Hair Whipper!" BEAM! "I made you something." Nodnod. "Hope you like it." And since she probably couldn't just hug him in class like she wanted to, she gave his hand a small squeeze before heading back to her seat. |
Post 1 Quote:
Ahem. No reason. Setting the Burin aside and making mental notes to bother the professor about bindrunes after class, she started listening to Botros again. They were going to write in runes? Really? Now? Alice was excited, seeing as she'd never tried that before and wanted to do excellent work. To annnnyone in the classroom? Anyone she wanted? Notes copied down, she quickly decided on her person and fished a scrap of parchment and a quill from her bag. Ready. |
Post #4 Text Cut: *pretends this is the full parchment or something* NO MORE RAIDHO! Ahem. So... the next one was Berkano... which was a rune that he wasn't familiar with AT ALL. And he wasn't familiar with Perthro either but seeing as he didn't have to carve that... it was okay. Berkano... Berkano... bear... kawn... oh! "Berkano berkano berkano... bu ba bi be bo..." Chant and carve... chant and carve... "... b e e e e e r r r r r... ob eb ib ab ub... b e e e e e r r r r r..." The 'r' sounds... they were tricky. He needed to ask Botros about those at some point. Maybe there was an easier way to pronounce those and he was just... missing it? Oh look at how Othala was pronounced! Oath-awe-law... Oath... in awe... and then a law. ... Concentrate Summers... "Othala othal othal... o o o o o o o o o... o o o o o o..." So many 'o' sounds... "... othul othal othil othel othol... othol othel othil othal othul... o o o o o o..." This chanting and carving part... wasn't too bad. Especially closer to the end which was where he was at right now. ONE MORE RUNE. JERA. Yare-awe. And look! It was one that said something about comfort and harmony. Him and Candy Girl had never had an argument so... there. "Jera jera jera... j j j e e e r r r a a a... j j j j j j j j j... ju ja ji je jo... j j j e e e r r r a a a..." HE WAS DONE! ... Yeah? Right? Did he need to show this to Botros? Or could he go and give it to Candy Girl right away? Text Cut: Ells! Alec looked around for a familiar head of hair when... OH? GRIN. "Hey Ells!" And she made him something? The very thought made the sixteen year old want to wrap his arms around the girl and give her a BIG hug. ... But... Botros. Classroom. Sigh. "I... thanks! That's really nice of you!" And she had to know that he'd love it, yeah? Because she made it and all. He grinned some more at the hand squeeze and watched as she walked away. Why didn't he write something to her? Something nice? And romantic? ... Nah. He didn't inherit any romantic genes so... ... And he needed a Candy Girl to find! |
Post 2 She'd write something small, right? It was her first time writing in runes, after all, there was no need for Alice to try being lengthy and end up ruining the assignment. Besides, doing badly in her favorite professor's class was an absolute no, so short and sweet it was. A couple of words could communicate her message just fine. Hm.. phonetic form of her name first? Then rune replacement? She wanted to do her last name, too. Could she do her last name, too? Alice went over her notes a few more times before attempting to write a couple more. Text Cut: Notes |
2 (excuse my childish handwriting ._.) Deciding that he could, to start with, work out how to write his name, Tobias began with that. He figured if he worked that out, then as he worked on his message Botros would be walking around and THEN he could tell him if the name was wrong before he carved it. Or tell him 'good job!' 'cause Tobias was like master of runes. He carefully wrote deliberately large letters before cross-referencing with the other notes they'd been given about what letters would have to be changed and what runes then responded with what letters. Tobias figured that his name was already spelled phonetically, so he wouldn't have to change that. There were no double letters or Js or Ws or any of those other letters that they had to watch out for. Well... there was an I but a quick look at the runes told Toby he'd just have to go for the long I rune... Eihwaz. Simple. There was the brief thought that maybe the A could phonetically sound like another vowel, but Tobias couldn't figure out what other one it could be... maybe U? Though when he thought about it, his grandfather always pronounced the A... so maybe he'd just keep it. Swinging his feet merrily and humming eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeever so quietly to himself, Tobias checked the rune name/phonetic equivalent list and write down the names of each rune he would need under each letter, and then looked to see what each rune was supposed to look that, and draw that underneath. When he'd done THAT planning stage, he leaned back from his parchment and stared at it to check that it would look right. Not... not that he would know. Right, so now to write out and translate the message (insert mischeviously smile directed towards the Huffie quidditch captain, ehehehe). BUT FIRST Toby raised his hand. "Professor, can you tell me if I've spelt my name right-" wow, that was weird to say "-please? Before I start carving it? I don't want to make a mistake." PRETTY PLEASE. WITH A RUNE ON TOP. SPOILER!!: da parchment |
Post 2. SPOILER!!: Professor! Awesome, then. In fact, while Dylan was awaiting that answer, he had most of it worked out...LIKE A BAWSS. He kept glancing between the board and his parchment...even though he had it written down for himself in his notebook. Habit, maybe? The Slytherin didn't know...but he was getting it done. SPOILER!!: Letter pieces After double-checking that bit, Dylan reviewed the other stuff...It was a rather long message...and he was glad that he wouldn't be carving this bit. Not that the carving bit was going to be easy, either. That was going to be quite lengthy, too. SPOILER!!: Letter pieces That seemed to check out, too....according to the rules Professor Botros had laid out, anyway. Dylan was getting rather excited about this assignment. Ugh. He'd be randomly writing in runes for now on. Everyone was forewarned. Letters written to home could be in this format. So, hopefully, they knew this stuff... Oh, and then the last bit... SPOILER!!: Letter pieces It seemed right...MEH. It was time to write up a final draft... |
