Seren lead the students across the grounds and into the castle, after what felt like a while walking -- perhaps because she wasn't used to venturing into the castle, she came to a halt in from of a cordoned of part of the first floor.. the Weasley Swamp.
The legendary portable swamp created by Fred and George Weasley was once large enough to consume the entire middle section of the first floor corridor, leading from the Dark Arts office to the History of Magic classroom. Nowadays, only a small section of the corridor is roped off in tribute of the redhead twins' swamp, but it is a historic section nonetheless.
The remaining swamp still SMELLS like authentic swamp, LOOKS like authentic swamp, BUBBLES like authentic swamp and would likely suck you in like an authentic swamp.
Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.
Oakey stayed quite as the other students answered the Professor's Questions. Shivers were sent down his spine as West mentioned that Flesh-Eater's thrived in swampy ecosystems, and Even more went through him when Professor Bentley Confirmed it. He whipped out a notepad and quill and began to scribble down as many notes as he could.
He was happy to be out of the Greenhouse, but to move the class here where a Man-Eating plants could have easliy found a way to thrive. The Weasley Twin's swamp may have a few new occupents.
He hated this lesson more and more. Hadn't Bentley said he would be safe?
Oichi was a bit puzzled by the current question but decided to give her best guess anyway. She raised her hand, "I believe a swamp ecosystems function is to provide the living organisms in the swamp the best enviroment to live and work together in harmony and make the best home possible. The nutrients from the swamp may also seep onto land, which can can help the plant there, or oceans and rivers which could help even more organisms." That was Oichi's best guess, she just hoped she was right.

"Its where the WISEST witches and wizards who don't wish to be disturbed by young people or treasure and thrill seekers, live. They live in the heart of the swamp so as to live in peace." And ONLY the wisest: not just any ol' witch or wizard was skilled or knowledgeable enough to be allowed the honor of living in a swamp. Because really, it WAS an honor: so many neat and interesting things lived there.
Well that was certainly... interesting. And no doubt there was some truth to it. "That's one way of looking at it, though I wouldn't of it as a function in herbological terms."

Oh...the function of swamps? Ella thought about this for a moment before raising her hand. "Professor, swamps serve as homes to many different species of animals so if swamps were to be erm...filled in or wiped out...the animals would be forced out as well."
"They do indeed, very good."

Those Weasleys had done a brilliant job with that swamp thing, yep! There were even SO MANY details that Sophie didn't answer the first question professor Bentley had asked. But she was in a class and had to participate, right? Right!
The function of the swamp ecosystem? "Well, if swamps stop existing... if they dry off or something, that would affect many living things, including plants." The HUfflepuff said after raising her hand. "A lot of them could even become extinct." That was what ecosystems were all about, wasn't it? "I mean, the main function of any ecosystem is to maintain a... balance in nature." Uurgh, Sophie hated how she could'nt word her thoughts very well sometimes. Most of times, actually. But that did make sense, didn't it?
Professor Bentley was probably looking for a more specific reply, though... But Sophie couldn't answer it specificaly... nope... she hadn't done her reading. Woops.
"Mmmhhmm.. yes, that's more of generic function as opposed to a specialised function." They were talking about swamps after all.

Instead she went for a more appropriate, academic response, "Well Professor, I think that the function of a swamp is to be the home to the creatures whose niche coincide in it." The organisms in there were very specific. They had to be there to survive.
A good, and safe answer. "Of course, naturally," she replied, nodding.

Then a new question was being asked...and the Slytherin Captain blinked. "They help to prevent flooding...because swamps are shallow and run-off across larger areas."
Shallow...meaning he could push someone into this one...and they'd survive...
Seren nodded, "Control... more than prevent... they can't exactly go out of their way to ensure a influx of water doesn't occur."

2. Wildlife are specific to region due their adaptation to salinity e.g. mangroves, fish, crocodiles and sea bird.
3. The bird drops fertilize and deliver nutrients to the swamp water, which is great for spawning.
Characteristics of fresh water swamps:
1. Are usually found inland where they form around lakes and rivers and are usually the product of heavy rain and seasonal flooding.
2. They have low levels of salinity.
Characteristics that both swamps have in common:
1. Insects thrive in conditions with high moisture.
2. Water is more often than not slow moving.
3. Moisture supports the growth of algae and lichens.
4. Swamps are characterized with the presence of large or thick growth of trees, shrubs or high grasses. These plants help trap the sediments so that the water doesn't wash them away and erode the swamps geography.
Types of magical plants that live in swamps:
1. Pounce stink...I was going to say that.
2. Swampy Sycamore
3. Agua Chomps
4. Blaze again buttons
5. Devil's Snare - in fresh water in dense wood
6. Blue Lace - salt water regions of the Mediterranean
7. Toad eating plants
8. Flesh eating plants
9. Bubotubers
10. Lightning Mystic - flesh eating plant
11. Victoria Amazonica
12. Gillyweed
Now for the question. Alyssa listened as the other students gave their answers. They all made sense too. She raised her hand to give her answer. She just hoped that it didn't sound like the rest.
"Professor, without swamps many types of plant and animals may not exist. There are a few species of Cypress and Nyess trees that only grow in swamps because their seeds require flooding in order to germinate."
"Yes, good good."

Seren was nodding, encouraging, approving. "Absolutely!"

He pondered this for a moment. Clearly they were a habitat for many species, but he wasn't sure that was what Professor Bentley was after. That seemed...too obvious. Two other good points were raised: water storage, and water filtering - which left Spike wondering if his idea was really on the right track. Afterall, it wasn't necessarily totally Herbology-related. However, he raised his hand anyway. Spike liked to be original, and think for himself, rather than just copy what others had said.
"Shelter," he said. "In particular for breeding grounds. All the detritus that falls into the water provides good nutrients for many small feeders, so they use swamps for laying eggs and to get food. The still waters are often better for eggs too, as they're less likely to wash away."
"Absolutely, a very thoughtful answer."

"..Since swamps are considered breeding grounds, it is where some amphibians, reptiles, other animals, plants, and microbes reside. With the existence of this body of water, certain species of living organisms....with emphasis on rare and close to extinct ones are maintained." So, thank Merlin for their existence. "Simply, swamps serve to provide ecological functions and operates as a refuge of protection to its inhabitants."
Well, would you look at that. Seren was impressed with all the fancy pants words Beatrice was using. But being a Ravenclaw, that wasn't all that surprising. She nodded, and smiled, in response. Correct, of course.

Function of the swamp ecosystem?
Right then. "Um. I believe that many upland creatures are dependant on the abundance of food that can be found in the swamps." Yes? Maybe. Possibly. So the lesson... had been a rather productive one, and now there was only one thing left for them to do. Hopefully there wouldn't be too many moans and groans, and if there were... too bad.
"Good, so I think we've identified most of a swamps functions, however I will just reiterate the six key points, for those of you taking notes." And they were all taking notes, weren't they.. mmhhmm. "The swamp is a haven for numerous organisms and is part of natures processes and cycles." Always remember the cycles. "It assists in controlling flooding, it preserves water, it's a source of food for humans and creatures alike. Swamps inhibit land erosion from rivers and oceans and it filters out pollutants." So all in all... it was an important ecosystem, yes? Yes.
"For the final part of our lesson, and to wrap up our case study... I would like you all to draw or sketch a diagram of the Weasley swamp and then annotate the parts that you deem to be significant in providing any one of the functions we've just discussed."
Pulling out a folded piece of parchment from her pocket, she held it up, tapped it with her wand and left it hovering in midair. "It should, resemble something like this... though really, yours should possess more detail." Hers was just an example, to model what annotating should look like and all...
OOC: LINK to the image, do NOT post it. You may use paint, photoshop or any other graphics program, you may hand draw and scan but do not under any circumstances google an image. Stick figures are cool with me, so long as they're original. The lesson will continue in 12 hours where I will dismiss you all, but you have 24 hours to complete the activity.
Oichi felt a sense of pride at being but soon the lesson progressed and she found out she was gonna get to do an awesome diagram drawing activity, She got right to work and this was her results:

Well, she'd sort of gotten the question right. Though only to a certain extent. Still, it was better than getting it wrong. It seemed that she'd have to brush up on her Herbology knowledge and stick her head in a book over this term.
Anyway, she had a task to complete!
Bliss stared at Professor Bentley, her face dropping. She didn't like drawing much, her 'art work' always looked like squiggles to her. She'd give it a try of course, just don't expect brilliant results. The third year got out her notebook and flipped to a clean page before sitting down on a tree stump by the edge of the swamp. She put quill to paper and...
She added a few annotations and then she was DONE.

Ella copied down the last of the notes and turned to a fresh page, ready to sketch a picture of the Weasley swamp. Walking over to her things, the blonde knelt down and grabbed her colored pencils, happy to have a way of adding more detail to her picture. She then picked a spot off to the side and sat, wanting to be comfortable while she drew.
After her drawing was finished and colored, the blonde labeled as best she could the different aspects of the swamp in dark ink so it would be visible. She made note of the water, trees, logs, Lillie pads, and tall grasses, all things she deemed important to the ecosystem. She then looked over her finished sketch, waiting for further instructions.

Theo had been absentminded ever since the lesson had moved to a swamp. He'd accepted it now, but he was still very anxious about any bugs or dirt getting on his shoes. And the smell, too. GEEEEEEET OFF. But once the lesson got a little more practical, Theodore decided to get more involved.
But where exactly were they supposed to DO this amazing artwork? Theo uncomfortably moved around until he was leaning his textbook and parchment against a tree.
It wasn't a great diagram, but he'd managed to get a crocodile in there at least. COOOL.
And now for the writing. Theo wrote a fair bit, he thought, using his orange ink. It made it stand out a bit more, he thought. He wasn't totally sure on what he had written was very accurate, but it was a start, and definitely described everything he could see right NOW. And no, he couldn't see a real crocodile but there still had to be one.
Oh, and one lil fishy.
Oh, and those trees could use a bit of work.
You know what, it didn't matter too much. SUBMIT.

Artwork? Merlin, McCall was absolutely terrible when it came to any sort of artwork. She couldn't even draw good stick people. She sighed as she picked up her quill and began to draw a diagram of a swamp. At first, it looked like a giant mush of green and brown. But as she added some more details, it started to look a little bit better.
After a few minutes and a few touch-up details, McCall had finished her diagram. Well, it wasn't the best but at least if someone looked at it, they could tell that it was a swamp. Or at least it was some body of water.

"Oh no,'' Jory thought. Anything but drawing. He was no good at that. Sighing, he pulled out a new piece of parchment and began to draw.
Scratch, scratch went the quill against the parchment. The Puff really wished he were good at drawing like his friend Gwen. Finished with the drawing, he now labelled it. Now his not so artful masterpiece was complete.

Swamps had a purpose now, oh yeah, they did as she'd just learnt. She supposed she would try to answer this too. Swamps were for certain things living in them, right?
Slowly, a bit hesitantly she raised her hand. "It creates a place for more aquatic creatures to live...and I guess it helps with flooding if it's close enough to a river that's overflowing. Water would go there too if it's inland that is..." Plus swamp monsters couldn't just live anywhere you know. Duh.
With the question answered she quieted down to listen to the Professor go over things. That was cool because she'd purposefully left out a few things that she was beginning to think might just have been important. This time she scribbled them down as well. You never knew when one of them would spring up on you!
And now they were gonna be drawing? ....yay?
It would have been cooler if they'd actually gotten to play in the swamp but this was fine too. Grabbing a sheet of parchment she moved through the bundle of students until she was in a convenient place to started her drawing. It took her a bit of time but eventually she got it done.
With that over with she looked longingly at the swamp, hoping the Professor would take a hint. Just a bit of fun in the swamp...nothing more...

Except when they were cleaning the teeth on carnivourous plants.
THAT was fun. Super fun. She'd rather scrape meat out of plant's teeth than draw stupid swamps. That was because she didn't think she was that awesome of an artist.
Taking her notepad she began to sketch out her idea of a swamp. Yeah it wasn't a pretty swamp but at least it was a swamp in the first place.

West was ALWAYS keen on drawing in class, especially for Bentley, who he liked to draw FOR. As always he was equipped, not going with a basic sketch but rather grabbing a selection of coloured paints from his bag and getting right into it. By the time he was done there were smudges of paint on his fingers, his robes, and even one on his cheek, but his parchment was complete. West added the annotations on a separate bit of paper and then busied himself peering into the swamp, trying to see interesting things.

A- Murky and slow moving water. Can you see beneath? Me either.
B- Tall trees that looooove the moist and damp environment
C- Fallen and decayed logs where fungi grows and insects and frogs and stuff hang out
D- Tall grasses, they hold water and such, but also the soil would wash away without them so, they're pretty important
E- Since this swamp is in a corridor, this here is a wall. Real swamps don't have walls to keep contained, that is what those grasses and root systems are for.
F- Nutrient-rich soil and sediment.
G - Impressive root systems that support life and keeps the water healthy

Now it was time for her to draw a diagram of the Weasley Swamp. Did she see a toad, alligator and birds in there? She tried to get closer to see but the lighting wasn’t bright enough, so she decided that knowing the Weasley’s they would have made it as lifelike to a real swamp as possible. She walked to an empty spot where she had a clear view of the swamp and picking up her coloring pencils, she started drawing her version of the swamp. Then she labeled the various areas of the swamp which she figured would be important to the ecosystem.
Once she was done, she looked at her drawing of the swamp. It was only that she was done drawing that she realized that she had forgotten to write the meaning of the annotations on her drawing, she flipped the page over and started writing the meaning to her innotations on the back of it. She hoped that the Professor didn't penalize her for making that mistake.
Text Cut: ”Key to annotations on drawing”
A – slow moving, fresh water, murky, algae. Algae are an important part of the food chain that many species depend upon on survival.
B – Tall Mangrove trees serve as physical habitats and supports life. Recycle nutrients and maintain nutrient balance of the ecosystem. The trees provide essential food chain resources. Serve as storm buffers and roots stabilize shorelines.
C – Fallen log decaying, moist, supports insect, amphibian and fungi.
D – Tall grasses contain water that supports wildlife and prevents soil erosion.
E – Fish and vegetation like mushrooms provide a source of food for humans and creatures alike.
F – Provides a habitat for many creatures like the stork, egret, toad and alligator.
G – The moss photosynthesize, consume carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. They also help to contribute to the formation of soil.
Alyssa then stood up and joined the rest of the class, holding her drawing in her hand.

Disappointment briefly crossed Mo's face as he realized they weren't going to be wading knee-deep into the swamp to discover all the secrets held there. Drawing was okay, he guessed, but it obviously wasn't as interesting as exploring hands on. Mo balanced his bag as he tugged a quill and parchment free, and then he sat down right where he stood.
Sometimes it was just as easy to see the world through people's legs as it was to try to see over their shoulders. From that vantage point, he did his best to sketch out what he saw in the swamp, focusing on those elements the professor had indicated as most important. As he finished, one thing became very clear...
Mo wasn't much of an artist.
Still, it did the job, and Mo shrugged off any concerns as he climbed to his feet, still clutching his completed drawing.
Breigh frowned slightly. Drawing didn't QUITE meet the bar of searching for frogs, lizards or any other manner of interesting animal that might be waiting just beyond the barrier, but there wasn't any point in arguing. She liked to doodle, sure, but outright draw for educational purposes? That got a soured mouth twist as she shuffled a little ways away from the crowd and plopped down upon her books.
It took some wiggling to get a page out from under herself and then some more when she realized neither knee nor cobblestone would suffice as a hard surface to sketch up. Dropping her box in front of her crossed knees, Breigh leaned forward, stuffed her chin in the heel of her hand and started drawing.
A little bit of this...a little bit of that...a little more embellishment of mystery and danger than the Weasley Swamp provided and TA-DA!
Breigh sat upright and frowned at her work. It would have to do, she supposed, and with such conviction she returned to the mob that was politely called a class.

Oh! It was drawing time! Peyton went to take out several color pencils from her bag, leaving the pinks and purples inside since she had a feeling she might not need them. She then got started on her sketch.
She scribbled and doodled and filled in the blanks until she was done with the swamp. It came out pretty cool if you asked her. Even the walls and everything. Yay!

Minerva listened as the others spoke and then when Professor Bentley asked the next question Minerva thought. "Well professor I know the wetness can attract many different insects, one of the most common ones would be the mosquito, which can become an issue in some areas." She did not like mosquito's they hurt and left stupid marks from their bites. Minerva didn't see the point in them other ten they were alive to transfer illness to people.
Then it was time to draw the swamp...Frown Minerva was never good at art and she cringed when they had to do any art work in class. Well she needed to get it over with. Finding a place to sit and do her drawing, Minerva pulled out her parchment and quills. Looking back up at the swamp she tried her best at drawing and labeling what she thought was right. Making sure to get blue and green in the water so it looked like the actual thing was hard, they weren't mixing well. Starting to label Minerva looked at her finished picture was done. Standing up she waited for the next instruction.

Yea, Dylan had worded that oddly...He'd be making a notation, of course. Better to be corrected...and Professor Bentley had been terribly nice about it.
Then she was pulling something out of her pocket. Moving closer to take a look, the Slytherin spied...a drawing? They were going to draw?
Ugh.
The Slytherin Captain could take beautiful photographs all day long...but he was NOT an artist. Not with this medium. Grumbling just a little bit, because he didn't want to cause too much of a scene in HER class, he went about pulling a fresh piece of parchment.
Setting to work, he started with the water, giving it a nice curve...before sketching a couple of trees in the background. Filling the leafy parts in with light shading, he added swamp brush, placing a few around the area of water. Dylan figured he could do some color charms on this to make it seem realistic. Anything to help his terrible drawing skills. Next he worked on the tall grass and logs. Dylan did these at the same time...for visual reasons.
Pulling his wand, he leveled it at the paper, whispering "Pingo...." plus color names carefully. The Captain was really trying to do his best...
After about twenty minutes, he'd successfully completed his ecosystem...and yes, he WAS quite proud.
SPOILER!!: Annotations
A. Slow moving water (murky), that contains nutrients (algae and fish)
B. Tall trees help to cleanse water and provide shelter and food for some animals.
C. Logs provide shelter, and support other elements (insects, amphibians, fungi)
D. Lily pads (for frogs and bugs)
E. Tall grass provides shelter and food, and also support soil
Jotting the other info just under the image, Dylan beamed up at the Professor.
Now what?

Kat was no artist, to be completely honest, but she did like to draw. Well maybe her interest in it depended wholly on her mood, now was a great to to feel artistic. Timing was great cos the class had to draw a swamp and add annotations and stuff. It was simple, but even with she just plain sucks with colors she tried her best.
Cos Slytherin was best. And counted on her. Kinda.
She kind of had a hard time drawing some parts, especially the ones that needed a more detailed appearance. The others, they were okay in her opinion. Once she was contented with her handiwork, she smiled at it and shrugged. It was quite okay. Just quite, but that was her best one for now.
What was next, Bentley?

Sierra listened to the six key parts of a swamp and made a mental note of each. She figured they'd have some kind of homework that would relate to it in some way. She just hoped she didn't have to revisit this swamp they were at now. She and swamps just didn't exactly get along. Then she heard the rest of the directions and did an inner groan, the kind that she just imagined and didn't exactly do. She hated drawing! Probably because she wasn't good at it and it took her forever to do. Now the homework she thought she had to turned into classwork she had to do now. Well, at least she could get it over with, hmm?
She took out a piece of parchment and a color-changing quill and set to work. First, she observed the swamp. She took note of the trees, color of the water, and the other plant life swimming within. She didn't see any animals, but she thought carefully about what type might find a home there. Then she thought about how they all connected in the cycle of life. Once she was finished thinking about this, she set to work bringing her thoughts to life. It took her a bit of time, but in the end, she was pleased with her work.
Spike didn't mind drawing. In fact, he'd gotten far more into it over the summer, as he'd taken more detailed notes on his specimens. Though, he didn't have Indy's wide array of colouring pencils and paints here. Where was his sister when he needed her? In France. Sigh. Fishing around in his pockets, he soon discovered he had all of two coloured biros - a black one and a red one. Well, monochrome it was then!
Eyes narrowed in concentration, Spike sketched the swamp first in pencil. Once he was satisfied, he completed the picture in the black biro. He then annotated the picture in red, to help the letters show out.
Eh. His handwriting could be better, but otherwise he was pretty happy.
SPOILER!!: Annotations
A) Trees adapted to wet environment. Roots important in reducing erosion + filtering.
B) Fallen, damp logs provide a habitat for insects + fungi. e.g. Blaze again buttons.
C) Shrubs + grasses provide shelter, and add to root support system of trees.
D) Home to both predators (the snake here) + prey.
E) An important breeding ground for many small breeders; there's plenty of nutrients + eggs won't get washed away.
F) Stagnant water. It's pure + filtered, but doesn't look it due to the algae and detritus.
G) Barrier to keep us safe.

Good. It was right down to work.
She didn't mind so much if her students weren't artists, so long as they could look at a landscape and identify the important parts of it... that was all that mattered in this activity.
She'd been meandering, sneaking peeks over students' shoulders and inspecting their work as she passed. Seren was right behind Melody when she asked a question....

Wait... what? Cool. They got a chance to draw the swamp. Melody LOVED drawing. She wasn't to good at it, but she enjoyed it. Melody found a excluded place and got to work making she labeled everything. She smiled once she was done. Oops. She had to put part D off to the side instead of under C. She hoped it was still good.
Melody then raised her hand, "professor... do you want us to hand these in or are you just going to inspect them?" She asked.
"I'm just inspecting. So long as you're all on the right track there's no need for me to go through them down to the very last detail." It was more for them than for her...
"Alright class, once you have finished the task, you're free to leave. Please note, green house six will now be open to all students, and keep an eye on the noticeboard for your upcoming homework assignment."
"Take care and have a good day..."
OOC: Thanks everyone! You're all spectacular! Loving the art work thus far. I will leave the thread open for another... 10ISH hours, after which it will be closed.
