So, ecosystems. Basic concept but Nina didn't knew how to explain. Heh. She raised her hand before answering and said "Umm... ecosystems are...well they are composed of living and non living organisms that interact with each other and..." AND? "And with their surroundings...err...environment" Did it made sense? Hopefully. And did the professor just said they'll be moving around? Nina was kinda eager to know what they would be doing so she took out her notebook and quill. |
When the Herbology Professor called their attention for the start of the lesson and asked them what they thought would be the topic of that day's lesson, Beezus only stayed listening.....Aquatic plants...water......that was what the majority had suggested.... And actually, even if she didn't voice it out, that was what came in her mind too. ...until Spike answered... ...and Professor Bentley acknowledged his answer... She smiled brightly and looked at her co-Prefect with admiration. He was really something. Hmmm. So...ecosystem. The Ravenclaw took out her notebook and quill, started to jot down a few of her classmate's commending and interesting answers before raising her own hand in an attempt to share her own idea. "Professor, an ecosystem is a segment of nature that consists of community of both living and nonliving organisms, their physical environment, and the materials and other factors that contributes to the relationship existing between each of them as they interact with each other.." |
An ecosystem... Nerida took out her notebook and quill getting it ready for any notes or stuff like that, before raising her hand and adding her answer for the ecosystem definition. "Professor, an ecosystem is a community of living and nonliving components along with their physical environment interacting as a system." |
They're going to learn about ecosystem? So ecosystem. Messer raised his hand up in the air. "Its where the biotic and abiotic factors interact with each other, Professor." And did Bentley says something about moving around? That mean something exciting going to happen soon. Yay! The fourth year took out his notebook and quill from his bag like the Professor told them to do. |
SPOILER!!: LeProf Mika had been quietly standing there listening to what Professor Bentley and the other students had been saying before she herself decided it was time to speak up. After all ecosystems were what everything in the natural world were based on. Humans and Wizards were also a part of them - without herbological ecosystems and plantlife than there would be nothing for plant eating mammals and other animals to eat...and then the world would be full of animals eating other animals. She shuddered at the thought and then raised her hand. "Professor, an ecosystem is a construct in nature it starts with the nonliving components such as rocks and dirt and then there are other components and creatures that call those components home." She smiled brightly. "The entire earth itself is an ecosystem as we have the nonliving components of soil, water, and air that we all need to survive." She bit her lip and then continued describing, "In short an ecosystem is a biological community of organisms and physical enviornments that interact and work together...they are just kinda cool" Way to go nutterpants. Just cool? She couldn't say something better than that? |

At the next question. The snake contemplated for a moment before raising his hand to answer. "Professor, an ecosystem is an organized community of both living and non-living things in the environment working together as a system in a way that would be essential for survival." Like how animal poo eventually turns into fertilizer for the plants. Maybe? |
Peyton's eyes wandered around the greenhouse in amazement. This was a cool classroom. Colorful and pretty. She likes! The third year had the urge to skip around and take her time looking at stuff, but the professor was already speaking. Peyton stood herself in the front, her height became a problem when there were overgrown people around her. Hmph! One day she'd be six feet tall...hopefully. Or she'd just have to get her knees done or something. An ecosystem? She knew this one...well, she did if she remembered hard enough. The red head thought about it until it came to mind. Apparently, her brain was still on summer mode. Anyway, she raised her hand and said, "An ecosystem is a community of living and non-living organisms that benefit/need each other in order to survive and reproduce." Yeah? Yeah? Yeaaaah? |
Oh boy they were going to learn about ecosystems! Orr put up her hand and when Bentley pointed to her with a nod, she confidently said, "an ecosystem is how living organisms coexist with nonliving organisms, they form a kind of community where they interact in a system that has got constant cycles of nutrition and energy. They receive what they need while also giving thus allow other organisms to also get what they need. " |
ECOSYSTEMS! Something Nessie knew quite a bit about! She had done this before in Muggle school, obviously not very detailed because she was smaller then, but she knew a fair amount. Enough to answer Professor Bentley's question at least and that was good, hey? The red head raised her hand and waited her turn. "Professor, and ecosystem is how living and non-living organisms live together in a certain habitat." That's what she remembered it to be, but it was a long time ago she had learned this and she wasn't one hundred percent sure she was correct. Next Nessie took out her notebook and was ready for what was to come. |
Okay, so he'd been a bit specific - but it had been the coral that had given him the answer, so it was understandable, right? And admittedly, given that no-one else was in the same ball park, he was feeling pretty good right now. Herbology was definitely his thing. ...so, what was an ecosystem? Spike knew well enough, of course, since he'd suggested it in the first place. He grabbed his notebook from his bag, flicked past a detailed specimen sketch of Rosie, and raised his hand. "It's the combination and interaction of the living organisms, so...plants, animals and microbes, with non-living entities such as the soil and climate," he answered. |
Ecosystems. Biomes. Those words were not foreign words to Kat. She's read them from different Muggle reference books you know. Oh well, at least it wouldn't be that hard this term... And hopefully it would be something worthwhile to learn for OWLs. Hmm... She thought for a while about her answer so that she would not be making wrong answers. She hated saying wrong answers, definitely. Once she sorted out the answer she thought was good enough in her head, Kat decided to speak. "Ecosystems are the communities of organisms that are both living and nonliving." she said. Kat wanted to speak more but she saved them for others. She was being considerate these days. How odd. "On the other hand, biomes are the places where the organisms live in. The two types are terrestrial which is land, and aquatic which is water." That's enough I guess. |

Ecosystems........................................ .......... Surely there was something more interesting to learn about then ecosystems and what was that word.. bioharzards or something.... yeah, she could care less but OWLs were this term and she had to pay as much attention as she could to everything!.. So naturally she began daydreaming... thinking of her mum and cassidy again and the whole summer in general when she heard a students voice... crap.. did the teacher ask a question.. ariana bit her lip and looked around as students were getting out notebooks of parchments and she followed doing the same.. Now what did the professor ask? |
“Earth.” The sixth year wanted to blurt the answer out without thinking as soon as the professor asked them the question. He was too busy looking at the different tanks, that he somehow did not hear what the others have to say. So what is an ecosystem? Mordred raised his hand and made eye contact with Professor Bentley. “Professor, an ecosystem is a community comprised of both biotic and abiotic components which work in conjunction with one another to sustain the established system.” He said as he lowered his hand and continued to examine the tanks. |

As interesting as it sounded, But he may as well hazard a guess, "Like a rainforest?" It sort of sounded like a different plant to Theo. Ecosystems. Not very human-friendly. Eco-friendly. Hehe. As told to do so, the third year pulled out his notebook but didn't write nothing down cos he didn't KNOW anything. |
Didn't Quote :P Safe, right. Oakey just had to feel safe, maybe he'd do some of that yoga Romanos always has them doing in DADA after class to loosen up a little. Right an Ecosystem, what was that again? Oh yeah "An Ecosystem is where Animals, Plants, and other living things that interact with eachother, and what's around them." He finished his question and overheard a familiar voice give a very scientific response to Bentley's question. Mordred, what was he doing here!?... Oh yeah. He looked over at the former snake friend and tried to see if maybe he changed back to Mordy. He couldn't tell though. |
Text Cut: Professor Seren Bentley He looked around as everyone answered the first question in the same manner, well he had to admit that it did seem like the most obvious answer what with the tank and all. So he waited as the professor got through them all and then told them that they were..... wrong! Ha.. including him too.. but he knew it was wrong. He then listened as the professor told them it was about ecosystems, ahhh well that would explain the tank.. Oh and now they were supposed to tell her what an ecosystem was.. mmm now to remember it from his kiddie days before he came here..being a muggle they had done this a bit in their Biology class. He put up his hand "Is it how living things interact with their environment?" he answered as well as questioned, he willed himself not to look at anyone |
Nigel brought out his notebook and thought about what an ecosystem was. Hmm. Right now he remembered. "An Ecosystem is a place where living and non-living things work together." He still felt like water plants and algae were the same thing. But now he wondered where they would be moving around to. He hoped he would see some cool plants. Hmm. wonder if algae can be cool. |
Ohh, ecosystem. That sounded nice enough. Though sophie was still more interested in staring at the pretty glowing thing. That was WAY too beautiful. Once again, everyone was giving out answers and they were very similar. "It's like, how everything... and everyone, actually, interact as a big... whole... thing." Meehhh, she couldn't give an answer that was different and relevant enough. Shrug. She would keep on looking at the pretty tanks then! |
Ecosystems.. meh, Wade had secretly hoped they would be maybe feeding Taking a brief moment to rummage in his pack.. Ah, he did. Only keeping it at his side since they may not be stationary for long. "It's a kind of system, for eco- well, it's like an arrangement for everything living." |
Ah, I was right, I thought so. Class seems to be moving forward and the next question, 'What is an ecosystem', I know that Oichi raised her hand and responded, "An ecosystem is all the organisms that live in one environment and how they live together in harmony.". She then heard the teacher say they would need their notebooks and that they would be moving around. Oichi smiled as she took out her notebook, she could not wait for this lesson to continue. |
Elise was trying to figure something out that everyone hadn't said and probably wasted a bit too much time doing that since she missed her chance. Simply copying down what Spike had said because he did get the question right, she beamed. He was a Ravenclaw for very obvious reasons, unlike Elise. Spike was... just really smart. And good at everything. Now she had to figure out what an ecosystem was. She was no stranger to these, since she'd been preparing for this term's OWLs since the Summer after her third year. Beaming, she raised her hand. "An ecosystem is essentially an environment in which living and non-living organisms communicate and balance each other out." And it was important that the balancing part was there, or else species would go extinct. Like the hammer-head plimpy. |
Text Cut: Head of House Ok so he was wrong now, but he wasnt a mind reader that he could answer that question. If only he could be a mind reader then he would be able to know everything! man that would be sooo cool! He would get to know stuff that are secrets too, he just wanted to know the cool stuff not all the yucky lovy dovy stuff. Yes he knew that all these oldies, professors and students alike were into that.. but he wasnt.. so he wanted to know all the cool stuff. So maybe reading minds was not a bad idea.. he did like that.. mm maybe he should look into it. Ecosystems? what was that? he didnt know! Couldnt the professor just tell them? Did they have to guess.. really? he put up his hand "Umm some sort of living system?.. a.. a.. plant system" he said after looking around the greenhouse, they were surrounded by plants.. yeah? and then the system part.. so... plant systems. Those were plants in that tank too so.. it all made sense right.. plant systems. He just hoped it was a good plant system, no more boring stuff please.. or he would be really tempted to take a nap in this class even though his head of house was teaching. |
SPOILER!!: Selective Responses -- but you ALL get points All in all.... they had done fairly well. It was a simple enough concept to grasp in terms of basics, so she didn't need to worry about that. "Good, good... so you all have a sound understanding of what an ecosystem is." But just to reiterate... because reiterating cemented knowledge to memory... "Ecosystems, being systems, are formed through the interactions between organisms and their physical environment, both living and inanimate." "Now many of you touched on points and aspects which make up ecosystems... characterises them and shapes them into what they are. Things to consider, when studying ecosystems," which is what they were doing, so notes on the following would be handy for them later, "... include solar energy, moisture, minerals, nutrients, soil, organisms and disturbances." Now came the crucial part, which would significantly influence their success in this course of study... "Why... would understanding ecosystems be important to the study of herbology? What can we gain from this?" OOC: The lesson will continue in approximately 12 hours. Remember not to edit your posts. There are no limitations in how you choose to answer this question. |
