Default Divination Part 2 at the edge of the Lake

Divination Lesson Part 2
Edge of the Lake

The bank of the Black Lake was definitely a different setting than the usual Divination Classroom high in the towers of Hogwarts Castle but that is where the rest of the lesson was to be held.

Professor Elwood walked over to the sandy and muddy soil and stood with her back to the water waiting for the trail of students to gather around her. The water was lapping near the heels of her sandal-ed feet.

OOC: Please post here at the Divination Lesson before having your character arrive at the Lake.

Nerinda seemed very interested in the way the bird walked too, which was good. "It did waddle funny, some of your classmates have given the reason to that." She smiled, and made note to talk more on that to the class.

"And speaking of birds..." Professor Elwood said allowed to the whole class as she raised a hand to point at the Ravenclaw and Slytherin in the back of the group making eyes at each other. "What is going on with these two love birds? Mr. Montmorency and Miss Odessa, if you two could please remove your eyes from staring into each others and please look up here at me or the prints I would appreciate it." She hated to break up whatever little session they were in the middle of but she had Ichnomancy to teach.

"So what I would like for you to do is walk around and try and find some other prints and interpret them as if you were out hiking or on a walk." Because they really were kind of.
Nerida was a bit confused about the whole thing. She understood identifying animal tracks part. The other part though, the one where you had to figure out what the animal was doing when it made the tracks and how it was feeling...Was the confusing part! After listening to the Professor explain it made a bit more sense and she had good laugh at Aspen and Dylan...Lovebirds...It cracked her up!

Wandering around a bit, the fifth year old found lots of intriguing prints. She paused and bent down, observing each of them for a second. No thoughts were coming...No thoughts...None...They didn't seem recognizable... She continued walking and saw some familiar prints...DEER!! THEY WERE DEER!! She loved deer!! Deer were just cute!!!! She looked at them and smiled!!!

She skipped back "So I found deer tracks!AND its BAMBI!! Not really but all deers are BAMBIS!!! So Bambi started walking in one direction and then started to walk into a different direction and then into another" She smiled it was totally Bambi! "Bambi started walking another direction. I guess it didn't know where he was going! I think he was looking for his mum! And than something crossed his path! I couldn't tell what prints they belonged to..." She pointed in the directions each time she said each of them. "It was a bunny....Thumper!! It was Thumper!! And Bambi than started to walk with Thumper! Side by side!! THUMPER AND BAMBI TOGETHER FOREVER!!!"

And how did this relate to Nerida's own journey? "Well maybe this means that when I go on a journey, I'll be looking all over...for something I don't know what...and then something will cross my path maybe someone...I don't know what and it will make me change directions!? So me and someone or something together forever!!" Yeah maybe she had gotten a little crazy with the whole Bambi thing...and Thumper... She didn't even know if they were rabbit prints...

West hadn't started with the footprints thing, it was far too interesting watching other people to begin with and besides he KINDA wanted to make some FAKE tracks for someone to discover and analyse? That'd be way more fun.

He had just asked himself and advised himself. Westomancy at its finest.

He looked up at his sister when she hollered about snakes. Since when was she scared of snakes?

... and what was she doing to his captain?

"Hey Aspen?" He wandered closer and then quite casually, after watching the struggle for a moment, "Dylan needs his eyes and fingers for seeking okay? On account of Quidditch and I don't want us to lose."

But probably the rest was fair game. West trusted that Aspen had her reasons.

He wandered off again, contemplating false tracks.

She sighed and stared at the tracks once more. Umm... Okay. So... the tracks changed directions. Deers could change their minds. Something she didn't know before. Or care to know.

Okay. Now... there had to be a reason for that, right?

One of those tracks looked deeper. So... maybe it was just... hanging out there for a bit. Deers did that sometimes. Like... when they were scared. So... maybe something startled the deer... and it changed directions? Yeah. ... that was a good enough answer for her.

Or maybe the deer just decided it wasn't going that way? There didn't have to be a reason for everything. Maybe it just wasn't thirsty anymore.

Okay. Now. How did this apply to her walk? ... erm. She... wouldn't be thirsty on her walk...? Meh. Good enough for her.

Assignment. Consider yourself done.

It sounded slightly bats to her, but she put those thoughts aside for now so that she could hopefully find something interesting and get some points for the ravens. And she didn't have to wait long, just by a pile of pretty pale rocks were a set of footprints.

At first she couldn't determine if these footprints were cat or dog footprints. Both kinds of animals seemed to leave similar ones. She assumed it was dog, because cats don't leave toe footprints, but these tracks did. At least that's what she remembered, these might still be cat. The footprints vanished at the edge of the rocks, the ground at this point onward was covered more in small rocks that sand, so further searching would more than likely be pointless.

After observing them for a long time, she stood up and raised her hand. "Professor, these footprints start off between two piles of rocks, but then they enter this clearing of sand where there are nor boundaries from the left or the right. But then they keep going and they meet a small wall of rocks, and that's when they stop." She shrugged and continued, "I don't know for sure what this would mean to a seer, but it COULD mean that I am or will be or have been trapped on a path going only one way. Like I didn't have a choice or something because there was something blocking me from going anywhere else on either side. But then the boundaries vanish and I am free to go whatever direction I want. But then I keep going forward and I curve to the right a bit and that is when something blocks me from going anymore in that direction." She paused, before saying awkwardly, 'Not that I am saying this about myself, you know."

Now it was their turn to search for more prints and try to interprete them like as if they were out hiking or walking. So Alyssa walked along the lake shore, looking down at the sand, trying to spot any other animal tracks.

Then she came across some. From the looks of it, it looked like the tracks from some feline animal. Maybe a cat. But what was a cat doing near the lake. 'I thought cats hated water?' Alyssa thought to herself.

She shrugged. 'Maybe that's why the prints are headed away from the water and back onto the rocks. The way the tracks are messed up near the rocks could possibly be caused when it was trying to get a proper foothold on these slippery rocks. One thing is for sure it doesn't look like it was rushing to get away. Its foot prints look solid. Some have heavier indentations. This could mean that it just stood around for awhile before walking again. Nothing hurried about that.' Alyssa concluded.

Looking at tracks, Alyssa began to apply it to herself. Was she supposed to present her answers to the Professor or was she supposed to keep it to herself until the Professor asked for their findings? Alyssa wasn't sure.

So she did what she would normally do in a class, she raised her hand trying to catch Professor Elwood's attention. "Professor I found some feline foot prints here. I think that it belongs to a cat. From its gait, it looks like it is taking its own sweet time enjoying the scenery....although I'm still trying to figure out what a cat would be doing anywhere near water....unless it was trying to fish." Alyssa smiled just at the thought of a cat trying to catch a fish using its paws. But back to her interpretations. She studied the tracks again.

"Look here." Alyssa pointed at the heavier indentations on the sand. "This shows that it paused for awhile, took a look around before finding the easier and more convenient way of getting off the sand."

"How it relates to my own journey? I would say that I would be enjoying my walk until I got tired of where I was and decided to change paths, looking for the easiest exit out. No rush...no fuss" Alyssa explained. 'At least that's what I think.' Alyssa thought to herself.

She walked around after they were allowed to seek prints of any kind, until she came upon some familiar looking ones. Not that she knew the animal, but they resembled the prints of a certain cat of hers that was back home.

Peyton squatted down, her knees together and her parchment on top of them. Hmm. She stroked her invisible beard. Hmmm...

"Well, these aren't like the bird where the prints suddenly appear because it landed. These tracks have a trail." She pointed at them. "They look like cat ones too." She bit her lip, thinking of what else she could observe.

Aha! "I notice the gaint--" that's how you use the cool new word right? "--start out faint. Almost as if it was just lazily walking or knew where it was going. Then they get a bit more prominent," she said, pointing at the specific prints with her quill. "Like, it stopped...or maybe in crouched down when it saw something like prey." Could be possible, no? "Then the prints disappear due to the rocks. Maybe it did crouch and then pounced on it's prey?" Or...ORR... "Maybe it saw the bird who's prints belonged to." Connect the dots --or prints in this case-- I think so!

So that were her thoughts of all this. Which was cool. Now how would it relate to her? "Hmmm...I think this may mean that while I'm on my 'hike' I will know where I'm going." Pause. "Also, I'll probably find something that interests me and I'll go for it." It also sounded like her, heh.

Wandering around a bit, the fifteen year old found some deer tracks in the soft sand/mud. She paused and bent down, observing them for a second. Deer were just...soooo cute and Ella couldn't help but think of Bambi. WIBBLE! No...no more thinking of Bambi. Ells was going to pretend that this deer was...Fred. Yup, Fred the deer out for a stroll by the lake. Seemed legit, yeah?

"So this erm deer...who I'm gonna name Fred...erm Fred was maybe out for a stroll along the lake because well, it's nice strolling weather, isn't it?" Seemed like it to Ella. "Well it seems like Fred was walking off in this direction..." And she pointed, indicating the direction the deer had been going initially. "When it seemed to have a change of heart and turned off towards there." And she pointed again, showing the curve in the path that the deer took. "Perhaps since it's such a nice day, the deer saw a person or several people and decided to get out of the open." Cause deers could be kind of shy, yeah? Seemed like a good interpretation to her.

And how did this relate to Ella's own journey? "Well maybe this means that when I go on a journey, I'll want to do it so I can have some peace and quiet...and if I come across someplace crowded...well then I'll decide to find solitude again?" Because Ella did like to think and actually, the lake just happened to be the spot where she usually did her thinking. Hey, maybe this was a good subject to learn about after all.

Nevertheless, she had seemed quite happy with Bliss' answer and that was good enough for her. Although Bliss had answered the question a little differently to how she'd wanted, her answers had been correct, so that was a plus. The third year once again felt kind of smart.

She then listened as Professor Elwood explained how the duck moved, how it was possibly feeling, what made it do what and consequently, what it meant to people reading the tracks. It was a lot to take in and Bliss was surprised by the fact that she understood what was going on. So she could actually complete the task without having to wander around and look like an idiot. Not that she normally did that. WHISTLE. COUGH. Anyway, the only thing she didn't understand was how to record it, did she kept the thoughts and interpretations to herself, or did she tell the Professor, or did she write them down? Probably to herself, who could know what the tracks might mean to HER as a person.

Her thoughts could be scary or dangerous. =|

Off she went, walking about ten feet, more or less from where they had all been standing previously, before finding an interesting looking track. It belong to a...SNAKE. Which reminded her of Terry, which made her want to leave. Terry being gone, even if it was only for the term, was tough. Bliss shook her head slightly and looked again at the tracks, it looked to her like it belonged to one snake and this snake (if she was reading the tracks right) had turned around, maybe it had seen a threat or had it's path blocked or simply changed it's mind. Any of those situations was quite likely. She wasn't quite sure how it all fit into her own views. Then suddenly it clicked....

OH. BEAM.

So this would mean that...oh, she didn't know. Did it mean what was happening RIGHT now? Or just recently? Or a current situation that she was in? HMMM. Bliss thought about it for a minute and realised that like the snake, once she'd reached this point, she'd wanted to turn around and the snake had done so. So for her, it had been a memory and a feeling towards someone that had triggered the change, but for the snake....unless it had another friend-snake to be sad remembering, she doubted that it applied to it too.

Whaaaaaat else.

What could this snake turning around mean? Maybe it meant that she'd reached a dead end it a certain situation, like the Terry situation. That seemed to be a dead end right now, she'd sent him a couple of letters, but only one reply, explaining that he wasn't coming back. Moving on...Could it also mean that she reached a turning point, she done something and there was no going back? No wait...the snake HAD gone back. Maybe...she'd made a choice that she was regretting and this was a sign that she COULD change her mind. Like...like the Alec thing. Liking him. She could change that of course, but she...she didn't particularly want to.

Right so, what now?

Hoping that she'd thought about stuff enough and got enough thoughts and evidence, she made her back to the lake's edge. Well, near to it....she'd found a tree to lean against. While everyone else was still looking, Bliss took the chance to write down some notes, so that if she had to, she'd be able to explain her findings and so on. Possibly earn some points. The little badger then slide down the tree and propped her notebook up on her knees and started to scribble away...

Belle then was studying the deer prints and thinking about what the deer could have been doing. The tracks were spread out and it looked like it was in fright or running away. Belle made a note like that in her notebook.

Belle then raised her hand, "Professor i think the deer might have been running away due to fright. I could have been startled as it was wandering the lake because of the commotion of students or other nature animals." Then Belle saw a little track that meant it could have changed direction. "It could have also changed it's direction when it was scared..." Belle thought out loud.

Then Belle felt peace as she was exploring nature. She was also considering what the tracks meant to her personal life. It could have something to do with fear of challenges, tired of dealing with emotions, not ready to grow up so soon....Yeah the last one. Belle was not mentally prepared to graduate yet. It always kind of scared her.

....and that story seemed even more logical, boring, but logical nonetheless. Of course now the bird didn't seem nearly as interesting to Lex and she found herself caring less and less about whether something had actually scared the thing or not. Her attention span had been stretched as far as it could on this particular thing and she was ready to move on.

Was the Professor ready to move on as well? Oh! She was! Good.

Alexa listened to her as she gave the instructions but didn't stay still long enough for the woman to get the last word out. Nope. She was already off looking for footprints that could tell her about her journey or whatever it was it was telling her about. If she saw any hopping-looking prints she'd be following them. It meant the possibility of yet another chocolate frog and NO she didn't care that she already had so many. One could never have enough; this was stated sometime before, wasn't it?

She trailed off a bit and didn't stop walking until she came across...a line in the ground, 'cept it wasn't just a line. Snake prints maybe--a venomous one??? Ooooooooooooooo.

She began nomming on what might have been her fourth frog while she stared down at it. Chocolate was brain food; she needed it to think logically.

Hmmm, now let's seeeeeee. Lex tilted her head and stared long and hard at the tracks. They're not very neat, the thing was obviously in a hurry. "Professor I found something! An eager snake!" Because they didn't have enough of those already. Ugh. "This could only mean one thing." Actually it could have meant several things but at the moment she could only think of one therefore, IT COULD ONLY MEAN ONE THING. "This is a smart snake, with a lot of common sense, so here's what I'm thinking." She pointed out into the distance. "Somewhere over theeeere is a bag of candy," Yup and she gave a solemn nod; words of wisdom being spoken right now, thanks to the chocolate frogs she was devouring one by one, "the snake knew this and snakes don't normally like that stuff but see, this one was smarter, like I already said, so he totally wanted it hence the obvious rush in these tracks--" She stopped and gasped as a thought hit her. "He might have had a brother! YES! A brother who would steal all the candy for himself if he didn't hurry!!!" Eeeek! That was terrible!

What was even more terrifying was the EXTRA bit of logic that came shortly after. This had something to do with her own path-journey-thingy!!! "This means I have to hurry!!!" Her eyes widened tremendously with worry. "Don't you see what this means?! Someone's going to try firsting me to my candy!!! I can't let that happen!! You have to help me!" She didn't want her candy being stolen again. Once was enough!

Well, not OBVIOUS reasons, but obvious reasons to the two of them. And now she was sort of being a little weird about the disease comment.

And that was when it struck her. Oh yeah... Elwood TOTALLY had a bird, didn't she? It was not that Selina thought ALL birds were gross, but those were duck prints and no matter what Elwood said ducks were gross. Especially the kind that bit her. Why did they always bit her? Did she have some sort of tracking signal on her that said bit this ginger? Yeah, she did not think so either. But yes, ducks were gross. Elwood's bird was fine, but WILD birds were gross and disease ridden.

But just in case Elwood was upset with her or something she was going to just keep her mouth shut... so she moved onto the task at hand.

There were a ton of prints that she had out for all of them to look at. Like the duck they supposedly had to figure out why they had gone the pattern that they had gone. Their gate would clue them in. So she took a look at the track of prints over to the fair left and got down on her knees to examine it.

The tracks seemed to be some kind of hoofed animal. So it narrowed down the prints drastically. There was also a lot of motion in what seemed like a circle. The animal was definitely heading somewhere. It had an end destination. She took a closer look at the hooves and figured that it had to be either a reindeer or some kind of deer. And she knew for sure that the deer was heading in one specific direction...

But what struck her as odd was that amongst the hooves were another set of prints that seemed to be some kind of feline or dog or something. It was distinctly paws. So was the deer getting chased by something? There did not seem to be any sign of struggle. So what did this all mean? She could not be sure...

Clearing her head of all of these thoughts she TRIED to stay focused on just the hooves that she was looking at. Pursing her lips, she stood up from the ground and started to follow the tracks. It seemed to her that the deer was going somewhere- maybe it was traveling home or to a place that it needed to go. Personally, it made Selina feel kind of anxious. The thought of having an end destination made Selina think of her recruitment and signing to the Harpies after graduation. In just a year she would be doing what she loved and being PAID to do it. What an awesome job. Seriously.

Maybe she was meant to find these tracks. After all there was the whole part of the tracks that had the interference from the paws, which did make Selina kind of worried. Was something to get in the way of her journey to the Harpies? Merlin, she hoped not. Honestly, it would not have been hard for Selina to find out for sure... but she tried to avoid that skill... made life less exciting and whatnot.

Nigel forgot to bring his notebook today. So he just went right ahead and wandered looking for some prints. It did not take long before he found some prints that looked like two snakes that wanted to get away from something.

"These prints look like two snakes are trying to get away from something. Maybe a predator or maybe they had a race to see who was faster."

The only really way to tell was ask somebody who knew parseltongue to ask the snakes what they were running from.

WHAT?!?!? Interpret her journey from animal tracks?!?!? That...... made absolutely zero sense whatsoever. How could a person's journey be the same as an animals, besides running into the same creatures? And even then, there was no reason to expect that that creature would react the same way to a human. While it might run after the animal whose tracks you were following, it could run the opposite direction if it saw you!

With all this in mind, Sky shook her head, then set off to look for footprints. After a few minutes, she found the footprints of someone's cat and studied them. It was hard to tell what exactly had gone on. But maybe...... "I found some cat prints. It looks like it might've been chasing something, maybe a mouse. But I don't like mice. So that must mean I'll be chasing something else. A guy, perhaps? A really hard to get one." Beam.

Jory thought. "It's sort of similar to me because if life becomes too hectic especially here at Hogwarts I like to come right here to the Lake, somewhere comfortable, and relax and try to think things over before I proceed. If I think the path I was on won't help me, I change directions.''

Looking down at the ground, she nearly ran into another student one or two times. Somehow, she managed to narrowly miss them each time. Finally, she happened upon something that definitely wasn't made by a human.

She made a face at the prints. Whatever this was had awkward looking feet, that was for sure. She imagined it having pencil-thin legs that looked like they could buckle out from underneath the animal. Hmm...

It also looked like some other animal had intervened at some point, crossing over the deer's path.

"So this is what I've determined about these tracks," Sierra said, spinning around and facing Ellwood. "They belong to a deer, and it looks like the deer started in a certain direction and then something changed his mind, so he turned around and went back. It also looks like some other animal interfered and crossed over the deer's path."

"I think this means I may try to go down one particular life path, but something will cause me to change me mind and turn around and take a different approach," she said. Yup. Made sense to her.

So they were all working, yes?

Calista had taken a few minutes to step into the cool water of the lake before she was being called over by various students to check out the prints they had found. They had found prints from snakes, deer, and even a cat or a Kneazle, how interesting. And they each were doing very well with the Ichnomancy reading, even hyper little Alexa blabbering on about candy.

"Good work guys, we will give the rest of the students some time to finish up. While you wait for the next activity, why don't you write some of your thoughts down in your notes or just appreciate the nice day." Like sitting in the mud or laying in grass--decent school-age kid activities.

He spotted the deer tracks almost immediately, and Mo sat down right there in the sand to study them. They were deep, well apart and sort of meandering, which indicated the deer took its time and didn't seem to have a particular direction. Maybe uncertainty or caution? And there... those looked like OTHER prints crossing the deer's, and Mo wondered if crossing trails meant something really special or if it just meant two animals were here in generally the same timeframe.

Probably meant something.

Further along, the tracks dragged a bit, leaving a long scuff in the sand that almost looked like the creature had tripped, and Mo's head popped up so he could eye the treeline in case there was a limping deer nearby who needed medical treatment. No? Okay, carry on...

"Professor?" He raised his hand and waved at her, considering how hard he was to see there on the ground. "I found these deer tracks here, and it looks to me like the deer was sort of... moving slow and cautious-like here at the beginning. Maybe on account of this is open ground by the lake and the sand feels weird beneath his feet? He wasn't comfortable here, y'know? And then see where another animal, like a cat or maybe a panda bear escaped from a zoo, crossed his path there? And after he crossed paths with the cat, then he sort of stumbled."

So wait. That had to mean something to MO now, right? Something about his path? Ponderponderponderponder. "So I think this means that I'm going to be unsure of myself because I'm in unfamiliar territory and out of my comfort zone. And then I meet someone or have some sort of encounter with someone at complete cross purposes to me, and it will cause me to stumble. In the metaphorical sense, not the physical sense. I'll falter. That's kind of... depressing. D'you think we could do kangaroo prints next?"
The Branxton boy had a question as he called her over to view his deer prints. She listened to his interpretation, nodding at the appropriate times. He seemed unsure of what the reading meant and was leaning towards the negative side of things, but that very well could be what the Universe had planned for him.

"Well dear no sound-pun intended, you see those little prints overlapping the deer prints? They could very well be another animal, I don't think a panda but something else yes, a cat maybe, that have crossed it but it could have been hours after the deer had left. It does have some meaning however and I believe that it suggest that something with intervene into your life and keep you from the stumbling or faultering that the deer prints alone have cast for your journey." Make sense? Things were all doom and gloom as they looked.

As for the kangaroos. "And I fear we don't have any Kangaroo's to tract here unfortunately, Mr. Branxton. Although I'm sure their paths would be fun to cross." Obviously. Great questions!

Either way, Alice behaved like a good little girl and started to waddle around, keeping an eye out for prints and things, but she kept getting distracted. There were just SO many things to look at. See? There were those shiny rocks over there, and the Lake looked awfully nice today.. was that the squi— tracks! She saw some!

.. What exactly were they supposed to be, though? Definitely NOT chickens. These ones looked like they went in a line.. snakes. The lioness made a moue of distaste. Nope, she didn't like Snakes, the Slytherin kind nor the animal kind. But, unfortunately, it was what she found. "Um.. I think this snake.." More frowning. ".. was going somewhere, but then it realized that it should be going the other way, or it might have it a dead end. And then it probably wanted to turn around.. and then it DID." That made loads of sense to her, mmhmm.

But Alice had no clue what the turning meant to her. "Does.. does the change of direction mean that I'm doing something wrong, and that I should.. turn.. my life around?" That was a very, very weird meaning. She liked her life very much, thank you. "And then.. once I change my path.. I'd find happiness? Or safety.. or whatever it was that the snake was looking for?"

She was comparing herself to a SNAKE. This. This was madness.
She had another worry wart.

Calista calmly made her way towards the flailing Gryffindor Captain with her hands out infront as if she was approaching a baby deer, so little and afraid that it could run off at any moment.

"Sweetie, that doesn't seem to be what I see in these prints. I think that instead of you having to change your life because you are doing something wrong, there will be a time where you are presented with an opportunity may help you make a better change in your life." See, it's all in the prints. The Universe wasn't out to get all of them, unless they did something horrible of course and that was just Karma.

..She turned her head to the direction the woman's finger pointed out. It was Dylan, and Aspen. Love birds, huh? Her eyes fleeted to the two, resting for a few seconds particularly on the snake. Well...it looked as though he had a thing for her....the way he stared. Not that it was any of her business.

So, biting her bottom lip, she forced her head back to face the Divination Professor, reigning her full attention back to the class with slight difficulty .

Meh.

Okay...mind back to the lesson.

Nodding some more, she took note of what Professor Elwood said about relatively applying the implication of the prints to one person's journey. She, herself decided that yes, if she was treading along and saw those duck prints, she'd take it as a sign that her walk wasn't going to be all pleasant and full of confusion instead.

Hm. Maybe Divination was starting to make sense to her now?

..They were going to walk. And find some other prints. Okay.

Crossing her arms, she joined in as her classmates began to scatter around the edge of the Lake. Step. Step. Step....making sure not to bump into anyone as her head remained down in search for prints.

"There you go," she muttered upon seeing a set of paw prints along the rocky side. She crouched down and eyed it intently for a few moments. This one looked rather confused too just like the duck prints. Err...it also looked as though there were spaces when the animal lingered for a while longer compared to the other areas. Some prints were contorted, inconsistent, seemingly uncertain but despite the constant swerving in various directions, it kept going on.

.......O.o .......

So...her journey was going to a long one but with incertitude and doubt mostly along the way?

Also.....Beezus straightened, swaying a bit as she stood up. Ugh. Stupid headache. Meh. Where was Professor Elwood?

"Professor!" She quickly jogged to where the woman was and caught sight of the two love birds from earlier as she neared. What were they doing? O.o Oh, whatever. "Professor, do we also take into consideration the surroundings where we found the prints? Or are we just supposed to focus on them?" She was curious. Her prints were found somewhere rocky, so it readily occurred to her that obstacles were dominant...but what if she found it on let's say, mud..with grass patches around? That would change the interpretation a bit.
The Divination Professor had just left Miss Fischer's prints and thought she had heard something else going on with the Snake and Claw she had reprimanded before but before she was able to take another look at them, the Ravenclaw female Prefect was there asking about her work.

"Hello Miss Castell." She smiled cheerfully and then followed her back to the rocky edge of the banks where she found some cat prints. Her question was a sound one and one she would readily expect from a curious Ravenclaw. "Excellent question dear and I would say that if you are ready for this, as a beginner I wouldn't expect it necessarily, but if you'd like, yes you can add the surroundings into your reading of the prints." So in this instance she could make note of the fact that the cat had been trying to elevate its self into the rocks which could stand for bettering itself, if she believed it had climbed them or that they were merely just hazards. She would be interested in seeing what way she took it.

OOOOH, these were interesting! Alex knew the footprints were snakes because he'd seen plenty of garden snakes in his backyard growing up. He always stayed farrrr away from them, but he still liked watching them. From afar.

"These snakes look like...they're running from something," Alex said to answer the professor. "They were clearly moving fast to make such deep prints in the ground. Maybe the deer or the cat startled them? You know, I bet the cat was chasing them," he said, thinking out loud. That was SUCH a cat thing to do.
"Very good start Mr. Greingoth, but how would these snake prints reflect your own journey if you had stumbled upon them, much like you have now before a trip?" Would that mean he too would be scared by something, etc? Just a helpful little push in the right direction.

Slowly, almost like a BIRD of PREY herself, Aspen turned her attention to the Professor.

Prey. Yep.

Though Aspen did have to wonder at the word probably in the Professor's response. Probably? No. Absolutely. That was secondary to the familiar little hint of fear that Aspen was getting accustomed to from others.

Good.

....

If Aspen was bothered, it didn't show. She was stoic as ever, staring down the Professor.

Basically, her instructions went as thus:

1. Remove eyes
2. Look at Professor AND/OR prints
3. They would receive appreciation

Hum.

Aspen looked at Dylan. "I'll remove yours first, then you can remove mine." Ladies first and all that. She moved towards Dylan...

And when he ran, she'd study his footprints and make some oh-so-accurate Ichnomancy readings.
--------------------

...But began to laaaaaaaaaaugh about halfway there. Short, dazed, and confused journeys, eh Professor? Merlin that was funny. There was a good reason this was one of her favorite classes always.

Smiling now, she continued towards Dylan. Run, Snake, Ruuuuuun.

Dylan's thoughts were his thoughts....but he was STILL staring the Ravvie!Odessa down...letting the Professor's words sink in as he did so. If Aspen was trying to scare him...she could've done a better job.

Selina Skylar had done better on several occasions...

BLINK.

Hearing those words, he did look away from the Ravenclaw, leveling Professor Elwood with a disbelieving look. Love birds? Really?! Could the blonde woman not see that Aspen was trying to intimidate and...emasculate...him?

...and then Ravvie!Odessa was stalking towards him. What had she said? Removing his eyes? Hard glare. "I'd like to see you try." Dylan didn't want to get crazy or hateful here...He'd been in such a good mood...but this girl was NOT removing his eyes.

They were his power...

Squint. "How about we just focus on the lesson? Hmm?"...and continue this outside of classes...where they could kill each other and not get in trouble for it...

....but then she was laughing.......WHY was she laughing?

STARE.

The Ravenclaw kept coming...but Dylan wasn't budging. YES, he was slightly terrified...but they were in public where his teammates could see. As a Captain, he could NOT allow this GIRL to make seem like a sissy boy.

"Listen, Odessa..." He'd try to head this off with some light sarcasm. "...I know you'd like to kiss me or whatever...but it can wait until after class." STAGE EYEROLL.

Besides, everyone knew snakes didn't need their eyes. They used their tongues and other body parts to sense danger. Apparently Dylan's detection devices were broken.

"These snake tracks, if you want to call them that, seem... skittish to me, Professor." Just to STAY on POINT with the Lesson. Still smiling, Aspen stopped JUST short of Dylan. Her toes were just a hair's length from his and her eyes were going back and forth between his. Would she take the left or right first? "The tracks probably mean that a snake is going to skitter away soon."

Then, LIKE a snake, or a bird plucking a fish from water, Aspen quickly jumped at Dylan, mostly using her neck - and made a little BITEY motion at his face. She wanted him to fall backwards, preferably fall down on his backside - without having to actually touch him.

Kiss him? Fat chance. Make his eye a centerpiece of her bedside table? Definitely would now.

GAAAAAASP! "SNAKE!" GASP! "SNAKE!" Oh SAVE this kind of girl, Captain!!! DISTRESS!! "The snakes slithered BACK!" GAAAAASP OH NOOO! Who could have ever SEEN that the snakes would come BACK?!?!

No, really, they didn't. But Aspen wanted to knock Dylan down. So she invented snakes, sort of like how Divination invented up scenarios to fit situations. It was ... well, it actually WAS closer to Westomancy.

She flittered around Dylan, seemingly TRYING to get behind him so the OHHHH so brave Captain would protect her - but mostly she was just trying to get her leg behind his knees so that when she PUSHED at him (which she did, to get away from the SNAAAAAAAKES!!!) - he'd trip. And because she was holding on to him, she'd go down with him.

And if that planned worked out...

And they'd make some animal tracks of their own, see? They were contributing to the lesson. One that came across their prints might predict a one-eyed Captain getting intimidated after all.

She put her hand over his mouth to try and ease the situation. "We're okay! I think it was just a stick. My bad. Sorry, Professor." Everyone go back to what they were doing. Aspen turned her attention back to Dylan, whom she was very much on top of in all the chaos. He wasn't going anywhere without bucking her off.

After she had finished speaking with Beatrice, the Divination Professor made her way back to her original teaching spot to check on Dylan and Aspen *shiver* like she had been planning to. She hadn't been called over by either of them to check out their prints and--

"Have you two started working yet--?" Just as she had come into sight of the two seventh years a whole array of bizarre activity took place: First the girl started to laugh like the Cackling Stump, then the boy said something about kissing her, Odessa shouted about a snake and then proceeded to try and bite the Captain face and then danced around him (some sort of strange ritual?), then she tripped him, jumped onto him and then proceeded to administer what the blonde could only describe as 'love taps'.

All the while the girl's third year brother watched on and then suggested not to poke Dylan's the victim's eyes out because they needed him for Quidditch or something like that.

O_________O

"ASPEN ODESSA!" Callie pulled her wand out and immediately levitated the girl off of the boy and sat her down a good 10 feet away. "What has gotten into you?!" Honestly though she was yelling at herself for leaving the two together and not expecting something strange from this girl. "As a seventh year and bright student I would have expected better from you as a role model, especially with your brother present. Ten points from Ravenclaw for your... indiscretions!"

And then she turned to the Slytherin on the floor, no doubt terrified. He wasn't completely innocent either he hadn't told her to stop....whatever it was she was doing to him. "Mr. Montmorency, I don't know what is going on here but I expect you to finish the assignment I have given you and not to go near her for the remainder of the lesson, do you hear me?" She gave him a look with her blue eyes that said she meant business. She hadn't expected this from him. She tired to find West but she couldn't see straight, hopefully he had started his work.

"As further punishment, the both of you will be spray-cleaning everyone's feet when class is dismissed. Do I make myself clear?" She had been merciful, she could have easily gotten buckets and sponges from the Groundskeeper and liked the trip over there to boot!.

Hehe. The girl had been chased by ducks before? How unfortunate.

"Yes very good." Elwood nodded as she took a mental note of the ones she said to be added to a list later. "The ability to swim is what tipped you off to it being a water fowl, more specifically a duck, and the reason that we found these tracks here rather than in, say, a field." Good use of context clues.

"Yes, very good. It is a water fowl and in this sense I think that the bird was protective." Of it's self rather than any young or fellows since there was no other set of prints.

Yes, yes. "Very good Miss Bishop, birds can be all of those things." The latter of her suggestions probably fit this particular bird best though.

Huzzah!

Who would have known that the boy who had just been talking about a made up form of Divination called 'Westomancy' or some other crack-pot idea would have more or less stumbled across a good point. "I'm glad you pointed that out West, something that is very important to this reading." She would be talking about that point in more detail with the rest of the class.

Despite the Hufflepuff's obvious dislike of having to stand in the mud without shoes, Elwood appreciated her effort in trying to red the footprints without much real instruction yet. "Good job. Although these prints do not belong to a swan, they do belong to a duck another water fowl. And the characteristics of stress and evading danger are both excellent deductions!"

.........

The toilet?

There was, unfortunately, a method of Divination that studied and interpreted the symbols seen in animal....droppings. They were NOT going to be studying it today though. She looked at the young Hufflepuff. "Miss Hyde, yes those are some common physical characteristics that birds have in common with people but unfortunately they won't have much help in our reading."

Crystal Ball boy was stepping on the sand...with SHOES ON!

"Dear, please remove your shoes and socks, you may disturb the tracks we will be looking at today." She tried to remain calm. HUUGE crisis averted.

Despite his not hearing the instructions fully, the boy had mentioned a characteristic of the print that could lead him to a bigger point. "They do have only three toes compared to our five, you would say that makes them perhaps less stable on their feet than we are, since they are usually flying, or that they are more frail?" She gave him a little nudge in his thinking.

Ducks weren't exactly stupid but like the Gryffindor said they weren't really considered intelligent.

"Yes Miss Cambridge, it does seem confused and I think there is a good chance it was scared by something because of the shortness of the tracks." The usually hyper and all over the place girl from last term seemed to be working some actual work into her routine, at least so far. Good.

Chickens, where?

Calista looked at the girl and then to some of the others who mentioned chickens? Why in Merlin's beard would there be chickens running loose on the Grounds and so close to the Lake. Professor Vanora may have some in the barn by her cottage but surely they weren't free-ranged. "That's an...interesting point Alice."

The characteristic of intelligence that Alyssa had mentioned didn't seem to fit quite as well as she hoped with this particular set of prints but a few of the other ones she mentioned were quite intuitive. "I agree with you on the fact that perhaps the bird's keen eye allowed it to see the danger early enough to get away, hence the short tracks? Or the confused-looking path of the prints might seem like a search for food."

The Ravenclaw boy also mentioned intelligence, which is common for birds like Eagles, hawks, owls, and ravens but not usually water-fowl. "This bird was probably very observant Harvey, I think that is why it's tracks are very short because it probably took flight before whatever it was fleeing from got ahold of it." His answer had started off shaky but definitely ended on a good note.

This one, although mistaken on the type of bird because of the faintness of the webs on the bird's feet, did have some pretty good characteristics often associated with birds. She tried to remember his name from the roll sheet and remembered that he was the son of the President of the Board of Governors. Huh.

"Yes, very good Mr.." What was that woman's name again? *flail* "Branxton. Although the bird is actually a duck as you can see from the faint webbing between the toes, just there." she pointed, leaning closer to the ground to show him. "your suggestions of intuition, spontaneity, and that they are quick to fly away at the first sign of hardship or danger are excellent and definitely relevant to this particular reading." She grinned and nodded at the Ravenclaw. She would talk more about that when she addressed the rest of the students as a whole.

Oh there was Sierra, Callie must have missed her when she had arrived back in the classroom. And she was talking about Bigfoot. Siigh. The girl was able to at least match her attitude and random comments with hard work and success in her lessons. She was happy to see that she was continuing with her NEWT studies in Divination.

"The prints are a duck, Miss Greingoth." She said brightly as she pointed to the frequently missed webbing in the prints, and then allowed her to finish her thoughts. "Confusion is a very good characteristic to notice because it is most likely exactly what had happened."

"Very good Prefect Gunter. It is in fact a duck, and according to these prints the duck was rather confused before it's sudden take off." She pointed to the tracks as she spoke, glad that he had picked up on those things.

"Agile..." Professor Elwood thought that word over in her head. Yes, many birds were agile in the air when they flew but ducks were usually more clumsy and just flew in a straight line, not really being known for their dive-bombs and loops in the air. But the water! "Agile would work, these tracks are for a duck and they are quite good in the water."

"Agression could work, it is a characteristic given to many birds." Elwood paused and pointed back to the tracks. "However, as you can see there are no other tracks or prints of an animal for this bird to be aggressive towards." Good answer though.

The other Odessa was here and must have been hiding earlier, maybe even she didn't approve of her younger brother's answer earlier?

And yet again she answered or did something that caused the blonde professor to become a little, tiny bit scared of the Ravenclaw. There was something....different with that girl, she was extremely smart and good at her lessons, according to the other professors but there was just something Callie couldn't shake--especially with answers like that.

"Prey? Yes, that actually is probably why the bird didn't have a longer set of prints and is no longer here." Alive....or dead.

Yes, the Slytherin Captain had noticed they were bird prints, a good start.

As he went on he started to refer to the prints with words like patience. "Patience is good, they are fully formed and not muddled by rushing. Good Mr. Montmorency."

"Selina." Callie had NOT expected that answer from the Head Girl and as a student who had visited her office regularly and knew that she owned a blue and yellow parrot.

Stupid and disease-ridden?! "Some birds are not very smart and there are certain diseases that are carried by birds but so is the same with many animal species, but let's just try to focus on things we can see from these prints." She smiled smally, perhaps she just needed to spend more time with Galileo.

Not very smart, medium sized. Yes.

As for the not webbed bit. "Miss Wheatborn, if you look a tad bit closer you can see the outline, although faint, of the bird's webbed feet. Easy to miss so don't fell bad. But I do agree one hundred percent with you on the bird's intelligence and size."

The next student to speak up was one she recognized from the small group of older students who had been sorted during the Feast. This one was related to Max.

As he spoke Callie nodded along with a grin. He seemed to know what he was talking about or he was at least very good at making things up. "Very good Mr. Vindictus, I especially like your notice of where the bird landed starting out prints." A details person.

Calista was a little confused by the Gryffidor's answer and was wondering if he saw the same prints she did. "I wouldn't go as far as to say all of that, dear. Good guess though." Those prints couldn't be that old they were in sand and would have been washed away within the next hour or so and that would be a stretch. They would have to be fossilized to last as long as this boy had mentioned.

Nerinda seemed very interested in the way the bird walked too, which was good. "It did waddle funny, some of your classmates have given the reason to that." She smiled, and made note to talk more on that to the class.

"Very good!" Professor Elwood was pleased with the new student's answer. "I would agree that this bird was skitterish and easy to flee. I believe that is exactly what happened."

Not a reptile...good. Oh and she had it, it was a duck!

"Very good deductive work. The prints are from a duck and they do waddle." She had smiled a bit when she mentioned her uncle and firewhiskey but the girl was definitely on the right track.

"Yes, tedious is a good characteristic to guess after looking at these prints. The confused looking tracks could either be that or a search for food." Both good options after looking at them.

A skinny dinosaur. Callie couldn't help but giggled again, dropping her head as to hide it. That Anya girl cracked her up, did she try to do that?

"Freedom is a very common trait associated with birds Miss Phillips, and I think that freedom is what this bird was searching for in the respect that it was trying to get away from something." She pointed to the shortness of the tracts.

"That's a different way to look at it." She actually hadn't even thought of that when she first saw the prints. Interesting. "Thank you Prefect Keller."

"Very good Jory, I think that is what happened to this bird. It was frightened by something else and took flight quickly after it landed." The blonde smiled at him and went to answer the next raised hand.

Bird...anything else? Elwood looked at the Ravenclaw who had fallen asleep in one of her lessons last term, waiting to see if he had other things to add to his answer.

Guess not.

The Ravenclaw was on the right track. "Very good Prefect Castell, I think this bird was anxious and scared and that theory goes along with the shortness of the tracks."

Lots of good information. "Yes, excellent. Birds have a very wide variety of traits that can be associated with them depending on the species."

"It is a bird Miss Hudson and I too believe that it was confused before it took off from the banks of the Lake." Hopefully she would see why when she explained to the rest of the class her own interpretation of the prints.

"This bird isn't like a stork or a crane but it is a water bird. Even though it is a duck and usually is with a flock, it seems for some reason this one was on its own." Callie nodded graciously to the young Ravenclaw for giving her answer.

Dancing? Calista really liked that answer despite it's very unlikely nature. She smiled brightly when she spoke the Hufflepuff Prefect. "Unfortunately I don't think his duck was dancing. Although that would be an interesting sight."

Woah. O____O

Calista had figured the kids would be a bit wired up from the chocolate and getting to go outside but she hadn't thought it would get this bad. She looked at the Slytherin Prefect as she shouted about the duck and all it's awesomeness with raised eyebrows. "Uhh, yes very good Mr. Katheros they are duck prints." She was kind of glad the bird wasn't there...you know, for it's safety.

"It is definitely a water bird, a duck to be exact." She started with a smile since the girl seemed to be on the right track. "And excitement is a good way to describe it. Another thing to look at would be another type of excitement or anxiousness, the bird being scared."

"Very good. I think that the bird was taking it's time too, using it's patience until it was disturbed by whatever it was that caused it to fly away." The Hufflepuff prefect was definitely on the right track.

A more literal characteristic match but still good nonetheless. "Very good, I think that those attributes are good ones to be given to this bird."

"Excellent everyone I think that you all have a good idea of what characteristics and attributes are given to birds when people compare them to humans." She leaned up from the prints and allowed for everyone to look back at her so she could begin telling them what it was that she had seen and to explain.

But something seemed to be going on with a couple of students who weren't paying attention.
SPOILER!!: Captain Montmorency and Aspen "Creepy" Odessa

"And speaking of birds..." Professor Elwood said allowed to the whole class as she raised a hand to point at the Ravenclaw and Slytherin in the back of the group making eyes at each other. "What is going on with these two love birds? Mr. Montmorency and Miss Odessa, if you two could please remove your eyes from staring into each others and please look up here at me or the prints I would appreciate it." She hated to break up whatever little session they were in the middle of but she had Ichnomancy to teach.

--------------------

Okay back to the real stuff. "Alright so you all had great ideas for what you believed had happened with the bird that left these prints behind. What I believe to have happened goes along with many of the things you mentioned." She cleared her throat before crouching down to point as she spoke. "Right here, like Mr. Vindictus pointed out is where the duck landed. It was rather confused for some reason, either because that was its nature or that it was searching for food, it was confused and wondered around all over the place, like Mr. Odessa first suggested." She paused and looked up at them. "The nature in which an animal or person walks is called gait. Gait, when studying tracks and prints is one of the biggest hints as to what the person or animal was experiencing when leaving behind the prints."

"After walking around confused for a few steps something scared it, perhaps the Giant Squid appeared nearby or a a thestral appeared out of the forest. Either way the bird took off here to avoid the danger or situation like Mr. Branxton and Miss Hardwike suggested." And that was what must have happened. She liked that they all had very similar thoughts to her own.

She stood up and clasped her hands together. "Now how do you think this applies to an actual study of Divination rather than just tracking something? Well when a person is on a journey or a walk and they come across some prints they can interpret how their own journey will go according to the one taken by the animal that left behind the prints. So for instance if I was walking along and I found these duck prints I could assume that my journey would be a rather confused, short one before I had to turn back or change directions due to a hazard." See, simple really.

"So what I would like for you to do is walk around and try and find some other prints and interpret them as if you were out hiking or on a walk." Because they really were kind of.

OOC: In order to do this I would like for you to pick one of the following three set of prints. Just try and figure out like I had Callie do with the duck ones and apply it to your character's own journey. How would it turn out like the animals? Just try, obviously there's no EXACT answer. Be creative and have fun! You can do it all in one good post. Prints = Deer, Cat, and snakes.

And the little one listened quietly, looking at the tracks and at how the Professor was explaining about the bird and the track its made. Now they were made to look around for other tracks left by other animals.

"Okay!" she eagerly nodded her head then started looking at the marks left on the sand. Hmm what to look for....

"Ohhhh....." Cat prints, or they looked to be one, at least the cat at their temple leave prints on the ground very similar to this. She bent down for a closer look trying to figure out what she might learn...

Rawdon started looking around at the ground as he wandered away from the group. Rocks. Do you think she'd notice if I picked up a few and tossed them into the water? Yeah, she'd notice. Bummer.

After seeing nothing but other footprints in the sand, he came across a patch of rocks and came to a sudden stop.

Tracks.

Feline.

LOOK AT THOSE CLAWS!

Big and little. Must have been walking on the rocks. No mouse tracks or remains in sight. But something got the attention of these ferocious felines. Or maybe they were looking for their outdoor litterbox.

Hmm....

"Professor, these are tracks made by two feral cats with wicked sharp claws. Maybe a mother and kitten. Looks like they were walking on the sand and the rocks. The smaller tracks are further away from the bigger ones."

Stare. "They're looking for something. Perhaps hunting because they're hungry or maybe the momma cat is trying to show the kitten where the outdoor litterbox is."

Translation - I'm gonna get lost searching for the loo on the Ground Floor of the castle.

"So maybe this means that my mum has been overly-protective and is now gradually allowing me to become independent."

No duh! That was easy! And she is an over-protective Badger mum who insisted on homeschooling me all of these years....

Alyssa continued to wander around even as she opened up her journal and began writing in it, updating it as she walked.

Text Cut: Alyssa's Divination Journal

Cat Tracks
1. Looks like it is headed away from the water and back onto dry land.
2. Tracks are messed up nearer to the rocks.
3. Could be point of where it tries to get a proper foothold on the slipper rocks.
4. Doesn't seem to be in a hurry.
5. Heavy track indentations could indicate that it paused to look around. Maybe to find an easier exit off the sand.

Interpretation of tracks as it relates to me:
1. I would be enjoying my walk.
2. I would only seek to take a different path if I got bored with the current one.
3. When my decision is made, I still would take my time choosing the best path.

Alyssa reviewed her notes before closing her journal and continued walking on the sand, enjoying the feel of it between her toes.

Melody got a close look at the prints. A common answer would be a cat since the prints had claws but having a kitten of her own she knew one thing there claws didn't make that kind of shape. At lest none she knew. Perhaps a tiger but it looked too small. That meant one thing.

"If I may professor, I believe these prints are to be dog prints. I am guessing the small ones is from a small dog and the bigger ones is probably a medium to a big size dog. I think it is a dog because cats pads are more circular while a dogs pads are more oval and kind of a rounded teardrop shape like these. On top of that a cats claws normally retract there claws unless they feel threatened or they are about to catch there pray. Dogs also have thicker claws and can not retract there claws which is shown by the prints. The prints look like the dogs are having fun where the mesh of prints are at. It suggests that they play a bit with each other. Then they continue on there journey to find around the rocks in there way. It shows that one can be serious and enjoy themselves during what trials they have to face. To never give up. There is always a way around what blocks your path."

Oichi felt so confused about this class. Follow animal tracks and interpret them, what??? And now the professor was assigning hoodlum students to wash the entire classes feet after class. Could this class be anymore nuts? Oichi decided to just follow the instructions, sort of. She look on the ground and found animal prints and began to scribble in her notebook. As long as she did not have to turn anything in then she would be fine, even if not she was not too big a fan of divination anyway.

So the duck probably was confused. Check. It was obvious.

Now they were expected to find more prints and describe them. Blah. And then relate them to how her life was going. Kat taught that was a bit weird. But anyway... she looked around for more tracks until she found prints. "Paw prints in here, Professor," Kat said. "Maybe a really big cat was here, since the prints don't seem to just be from an ordinary housecat."

And how it relates in real life. Kat looked around the prints and noticed rocks. Rocks? "I notice rocks over there, Professor, and I could make an inference that the animal that created these paw prints had to get pass through them so it had to climb up the rocks." Or not. It could totally just jump over it. "I've went through lots of obstacles and hardships in life and experienced one recently, which are represented by the rocks, and I could say that it wasn't easy but it required effort and determination." She hopefully wasn't being too... uhm, expressive.

It was just the truth.

............

Kat twitched a bit when she heard Elwood shout. The blonde then stared at her Divination teacher and realised... Oh.

Aspen Odessa and... CAPTAIN?! Kat was obviously confused. What's going on with them? Were they... together? Yep, Kat seemed to have more questions about the two than questions about the lesson.

Anyway Kat redirected her attention back to the prints, examining it more.

"So what I would like for you to do is walk around and try and find some other prints and interpret them as if you were out hiking or on a walk." Because they really were kind of.
Booo. Theodore let out a whimper, and kicked them off in a strop. Though once he'd gotten over that, he squatted down low to set them neatly together with his socks slightly poking out of each shoe. He felt uncomfortable about his feet. Feet were kind of gross.

He listened to what the professor had to say, and the way she said it made sense. "Good point." He nodded, almost congratulating her for the answer.

Deciding there was no way out of it, Theo took a few steps, cringing at the sand seeping through his toes. He'd walked straight past the snake prints, because honestly, he hadn't noticed it. And to be honest, he couldn't find any, and his eyes were getting a bit tired, so he belt a little lower for extra measure. But he saw the cat ones. Or at least, they looked like a cat. It could possibly be a lion, too. Or a DRAGON. Theo would play it safe with a cat.

The third year squatted down low, stroked his imaginary beard for a moment, and thought. "Looks like this cat was walking... to the rock... and the rock looks a little damp so I'm guessing it took a pee." That was the best interpretation he could come up with. To be honest, he was still a little confused.

"So if I was on a hike," Cos that's what the professor said, right? "I would go and find another rock...." To pee on and such. "I dunno it's not very clear." There was probably more to interpret but this was just a start.

Anyway... the third year looked up after hearing something about Aspen Odessa. Lost house points? Theo didn't mind that at all.

Do I make myself clear?" She had been merciful, she could have easily gotten buckets and sponges from the Groundskeeper and liked the trip over there to boot!.[/color]
.... was this a good time to comment that his sister was, in fact, a brilliant role model? And that she'd taught him lots of great things? For instance, what he was doing at that moment, out of sight of the professor behind a group of bigger kids, was researching and experimenting, things his sister was an expert in. Of course he had to set up said experiment first.

West picked up a stick and a few stones and casually used those, along with his hands to make some interesting marks in the sand, managing to make it seem like he was just trying to get a closer look at other things, and you know, maybe like he was a bored kid messing with a stick.

Mhmm. He looked around and then casually headed over to the snake trail. Oh yes he had been here all along. West had the most innocent possible expression on his face.

Snake trail...s? two snakes? or one trip there and one back? So they were just supposed to make up junk about what it meant?

"Okay two snake trails here and that's because where you find one snake," Like a Slytherin snake, not necessarily an actual snake snake, "You'll probably find a whole nest of them, we've got to stick together because sometimes people think we bite bad and then they'll try to stomp us, but that just provokes us and if we're not alone then people will get bit by buddy snakes too." Pause. "So obviously in my journey I'm going to have a BUDDY by my side." He looked at Theo and... since he was all the way over there, it was a mental fist bump. "Also cos they're pretty straight tracks, it means that the ambition and drive is taking me RIGHT where I wanna be. I just gotta go ahead and not make detours. "

Totally better than the professor's confusion, right?

Default Finding prints...
Puff by day, snake by night | Mj's bestie | Always UP to Something...

Minerva listened to the instructions and then moved along to see what she could find. As she walked she watched as some other students found tracks and began their work. Trailing off to an area that was more alone she thought it would be a good place to find her own tracks. Moving a little closer to the lake she noticed something and bent down.

These looked like something was drug off, maybe into the lake. At first this worried Minerva a little then she followed the tracks and realized they didn't go into the lake or didn't disappear really, but kept going. This animal did not have feet and rolled around it seemed, no not rolled, slide. Then it hit her, these were snake tracks. She bent down again to get a good look at them and try to figure this out.

Oh! So they could just kind of hang out a bit? That was nice. Ells took advantage of this and plopped down in a sunny spot on the grass, scribbling notes on Fred the deer and his little walk along the shore. She even went as far as to illustrate her notes, making Fred look quite a bit like Bambi. WIBBLE! Anyway...

Just as Aquila bent her knees for a closer look at the sand the Professor gave such a holler it gave her a start. Looking around wide eyed she tried to figure out who was this ASPEN ODESSA the pretty Professor Lady was yelling at. bright student.... role model.... Ravenclaw Oh that was her house! The young Claw stood up in attention and started smiling. Her house was mentioned so... thats a good thing right?

Of course she had no idea what the consequences of Ten Points from Ravenclaw actually means. Much to learn this young one has.....

When it looked like that commotion has passed she turned her attention back to the patch of sand in front of her. Bending lower she studied the paw prints, hovering her delicate fingers over the indentations. Upon closer inspection these prints look way larger than any cat paw she's ever seen at home, and there are extra indentations with what seem to be claws....

"Oh wow...." she breathed. This was giving her a funny feeling-- the kind when the Priestesses would bade all of them to never go off alone because danger is in their midst. And sometimes that means certain animals are on the prowl for food...

*gulp*

She took out a parchment and decided to write down things down. Oh this was just like adding stuff in her scrapbook, which she always liked....

SPOILER!!: Aquila's parchment

SPOILER!!: for Professor's eyes only ;)

SPOILER!!: are you Chris? do you play Callie Elwood? if not shoooo :P

The paw prints looks to be made by a cat-- but not the cute little kitties like what we have at the temple-- this looks big and heavy, because the prints are so deep into the sand. PLUS there are little marks on the sand that looks to be CLAWS, so maybe this was one of the big cats that hunts animals, the dangerous kinds, the ones the High Mother says to beware of because they are large enough and fast enough and strong enough to KNOCK us down and EAT us.

Anyway the prints move forward towards the pile of rocks where the prints are the deepest and most put together. So it looks like the big cat made the jump over these rocks because I can imagine how the position of their legs would be--front and hind paws come together, bending at the knees, shifting the balance so that when the cat jumps it springs forward, leaving those kinds of imprints behind.

How does this relate to my potential journey? Well the High Mother tells me that the challenges we encounter in life are like obstacles along the road, and that it is up to us how we should deal with that. Those rocks look to be obstacles for the big cat and the big cat made a jump to get over the rocks or at least climbed over it. If I encounter some challenge in my path I guess I should find a way to get around or over it. But I cant do it half-heartedly. I have to be fierce and fully decided-- just like the way this cat is fierce and fully decided to make the jump to get around that obstacle.

By the time Aquila finished what she had written she was already sitting on the sand, lanky legs tucked beneath her, her feet covered with wet sand. After Belle was done taking notes, she was happy she could enjoy the rest of the day. Belle decided to dip her feet into the water and enjoy the sunshine. This was one of the most relaxing lessons she ever had. She dipped her head back and took in the sunshine.

Then Belle heard the professor yelling at some fellow students. All she heard was the student's would have to clean everyone's feet. Ummm...yeah...she was not letting anyone come near her feet. She was capable of doing it on her own. She was 16 turning 17. She was old enough. Why would you make the professor mad on her first day? That seemed inconsiderate.

Sarah began to look. She walked around, her eyes peeled to the ground, trying hard not to walk into somebody. As she walked along the lake she saw some spoor, and she felt like she was the man from the muggle book "Jock of the Bushveld", yet he got lost from following spoor so she did not want to do the same. She saw some feline paw print ahead, ones that lead to a boundry of rocks. The pawprints seemed to fall at regular intervals and then, at the 'lobby' before the rocks they got heavily concentrated. Perhaps that meant that in life, when one reaches a challenge it means they have to work harder, like the cat did- as Sarah had noted that he or it had gone over the rocks. Now as it was divinition, it meant to predict the future. SO it meant that when the going got tough, Sarah should work harder and be more involved and then she would overcome it.

Laura looked around for footprints and suddenly found some, she squatted down to see what she could see and smiled, when she saw that the footprints were from some cool animal, she was sure she had seen them before somewhere, but where, oh yeah she giggled at home when her cat was walking around, so surely that meant they belonged to a cat yeah, surely, she looked at them again and saw that they were surely cats because they had cat paw prints, she smiled, though she was a bit confused as what to do next.

SPOILER!!: Aspen Odessa
...then Aspen would fall ON HIM.

She did. Timber. Two seventh years, falling down because of a pair of imaginary snakes. Nothing out of the ordinary about that.

Sooo.... her fingers crept up from his mouth... tip-toed on fingertips... and walked slooowly up to his eye....

What in the.....

Suddenly the next thing Dylan knew, Aspen Odessa was on top of him...clamping his mouth shut with her hand. All he could do was STARE at the Ravenclaw and her audacity. No one had ever...attacked him like this...

O.O

THEY WERE NOT OKAY!

STARE!

He wriggled beneath her, trying everything in his physical power to get her off of him. She was still giving him the crazy eye...Wait! She wasn't really going to try and take his eyes, was she?! The Slytherin fought against her...but it was in vain...Ravvie!Odessa had him...pinned in an awkward way...and it FELT awkward...

GAH!

SPOILER!!: West Odessa

WEST!

YES, save your Captain from your hot dangerous older sister....

Dylan struggled against her more so, pushing himself against her with force, trying to catch her off guard...or something. Merlin...

This whole situation...FELT.......weird...and vastly inappropriate...

SPOILER!!: Professor Elwood

It was short lived, though. Professor Elwood was coming to his rescue! Merlin, Dylan could've kissed her...NOT that he would...She was a Professor and that would've been...frowned upon.

When Aspen was lifted off his body, the Slytherin immediately stood, brushing dirt off his clothing. As a response to the Professor...he didn't WANT to go anywhere near her at the moment. It wasn't like he'd been willing! Why was Elwood looking at them like that? It hadn't been what she'd thought!!

.......Not that the Slytherin hadn't encouraged the argument. The Professor had a point. He could've made a huge fuss and told her 'NO' and 'STOP'...

Also...

Dylan could not believe he was being made to clean...feet. Totally gross...and what made that worse...He was not a fan of feet. They quite literally disgusted him in every possible way. Ewww.

The Captain would concede, though. Really, he didn't want anymore trouble. "Yes........ma'am." It was gritted out and sounded quite painful to say...

He walked off to find some nice...snake tracks to analyse. Crazy females. All of them.
________________

Dylan wandered for a bit, still trying to calm himself down from the physical manhandling. Merlin, it was going to put him in a sour mood for the rest of the day. He could just feel it...

.......

SNAKE TRACKS!

Allowing (forcing, actually) his attention to zero in and the tracks, he squatted, getting a closer look. Hmmm, he offhandedly wondered if he could correlate this to himself...since he was a different kind of snake...but STILL a snake.

Snake-y behavior in general...

"It seems like this particular snake wasn't locked onto anything in particular. His tracks aren't straightforward..." Dylan had seen many snake-tracks. The ones that were just straight with no deviating were the ones that had an eye on the prize...maybe? "If I seen this, perhaps I'd think I was...going to have a rather endless day? Maybe nothing of significance would happen?"...because if the snake was just wandering around...that couldn't have meant excitement.

Yea, he wasn't that good at this...and his mind was still...rattled.

Dylan WOULD get Aspen Odessa back.

Yeah, he had better agree with her because she really didn't want to take more house points. "Fine, thank you Mr. Montmorency." No he better get to work.

"Ohhhh....." Cat prints, or they looked to be one, at least the cat at their temple leave prints on the ground very similar to this. She bent down for a closer look trying to figure out what she might learn...

She glances to look at the prints again-- and was promptly distracted by the fancy shaped rocks half burried in the sand. "Ohhh pretty...." maybe something she can keep for her scrapbook? Yes.

Tracks.

At first this worried Minerva a little then she followed the tracks and realized they didn't go into the lake or didn't disappear really, but kept going. This animal did not have feet and rolled around it seemed, no not rolled, slide. Then it hit her, these were snake tracks. She bent down again to get a good look at them and try to figure this out.

Good, good. After the blow-up that she had just unleashed on Dylan and Aspen Callie was happy that some of the kids were behaving and doing as they were told.

As she walked around to listen to each of their interpretations and came across an interesting pair of prints that she would have to come check up on later (West's made-up ones xDD), she told them that they too could work on writing their ideas down and waiting for the next activity.

SPOILER!!: Questions and those needing a little help

As Elwood made her way to each of the students who were giving her there interpretations she came across a little Slytherin who seemed to have it all going okay except for one tiny point. "Dear, your interpretation is great but I think that those are cat prints, not dogs. Good work though." An easy mistake to make, so she shouldn't worry.

Happy that the Slytherin took his shoes off like she had asked she was more than happy to help him with his reading.

Peeing cat...okay. She nodded along anyways as the boy struggled on. "Well, Theo, perhaps this cat...relieving itself on the rock suggest that on your journey you will be walking along, get to a high place of understanding, the rock," she paused pointing at her head and then the rock. "and then become relieved a burden that you had been carrying with you, like the cat's....umm yeah. So perhaps a emotional burden that you have gotten rid of."

He got that right?

After she had talked with Theo, Callie was about to go move on with the lesson when she saw little Laura Hyde looking confused as she was staring at the cat prints nearby.

"Laura, do you need some help? Well it seems like you've found the prints of this cat. They look like they may have been walking around and then jumped up onto the rocks, is there something in your life that could apply to this?" A little helpful nudge in the right direction would help her hopefully.

"Okay everyone, if you've finished with the animal prints activity please come over here to listen to the instructions for the next and final activity. And if you haven't still come over here." she nodded, obviously she didn't want to have to repeat herself.

Right, so animal Ichnomancy--covered. "The next activity we are going to do is the reason why we are not wearing shoes. Human Ichnomancy is different than what we had just been doing because we will be doing readings on just one footprint." She stepped over to a particularly muddy spot on the bank, pressed her foot in it and after a few seconds, removed it to leave a perfect print of her foot.

"To read a person's foot print we go to similar rules to Palmistry. The toes represent the mind and higher self so the longer they are, which can be seen by how far the toes prints are from the rest of the foot, the more thoughtful and logical a person is." She moved her finger to point at the middle section of the foot. "The arch is for the person's day-to-day life and the conscious mind, which means if the arched section is short they are more aloof and unaware of what is going on around them and the opposite means they live in the moment and try to be as active in their surroundings as possible." And the last section was up next. "The heel, or back part of the foot represents primal instincts, health and basic drives of the subconscious. So the deeper your heel is in the mud the more in tune and well-rounded your health is."

Phew, it was a lot to talk about from just one little footprint in the mud. Hopefully they had all gotten it. "So what I want you to do is go make a print in the mud and then walk around to read one other person's. I then want you to write down on a piece of parchment what your intrepretation of them is based on the print and give it to them when you're finished."

OOC: I need you to post your character making the print and YOU making a drawing of it using either PhotoShop, paint or some other graphics making program (no found images, you must make it) and include it in your post so others can see. It doesn't have to be super good just big enough to see. If you have trouble showing how deep something is just write beside it if its deep or shallow. Next you need to make a post reading someone else's print and writing it up in a parchment. You can also give the parchment to the person in the same post if you'd like. So I expect 2-3 posts.

This will be the last activity before the lesson so you will have roughly 24 hours to finish. PM if you have questions.

Laura looked at the Professor and smiled. "Well maybe rock climbing or maybe your going to go through some money trouble or hit a rocky patch?" Laura sighed, seriously this was hard, she wanted to stop now her brain was hurting her, she wasn't used to this much thinking.

Laura listened to the Professor. "I'll give it my best attempt but I'm not very good at things using my hands or feet." Laura sighed, she wasn't sure she could do this and all she wanted to do was cry now, she wasn't good at divination's though it wasn't her fault.

Puff by day, snake by night | Mj's bestie | Always UP to Something...

Minerva looked at the snake tracks and tried to figure it out. "Well the snake looks like it was going slow and steady here, but as it keeps going it looks like it either was chasing something or maybe being chased." She followed the print a little while. "Yes, it is pushed down harder here like it was moving faster."

Minerva tried to think of what that could mean. Well it depended on what the snake was actually doing really. If it was scared by something and running that could mean that Minerva could be afraid of something or maybe something was making her change. She had so many changes in her life, was there really going to be another one.

If the snake was chasing after something else, then it could mean that she had found a goal that she was going to go after. That maybe there was a light at the end of a tunnel that was causing problems. Looking back towards Professor Elwood she decided to ask. "Professor, this snake print. It looks like the snake was just going steady and then either got scared or was chasing something. I have maybe figured out that it could mean two different things depending on which it could be. Is there anyway of figuring out which it could be?"

Default Deer prints & Footprint Drawing!
♡ A heart full of Love l ☾ A night bright as Day l

When the Professor had told Violet that the birds prints weren't those of a swan, Violet did frown a little bit. But her smile had quickly returned when the Professor was still pleased with her response of thinking that the bird may have been stressed or angry. Once again..YAY for class participation!

She then heard the Professor continue on with the lesson and the next thing she wanted them to do was find a pair of tracks on their own and study them. Violet paused..seemed simple enough. But the problem was...she was going to have to walk in the squishy mud again. Violet winced at the thought but... SQUISH SQUISH SQUISH Oh it was even more agonizing than the last time!

But thankfully it didn't take Violet very long to find a very interesting pair of tracks that she began immediately studying. They were rather odd looking, not ones that she was used to seeing. And she was studying them for a good couple of seconds until she was to make out..a deer maybe? And judging by the prints they seemed to a little all over the place, going this way then that way. Seems to her that there must have been a lot going on for that deer. Violet turned her attention towards the Professor raising her hand,"Professor, I do believe that these are the prints of a deer.. And judging by what the prints are showing, it seems that there must have been a bit of confusion going on with the poor deer..I think maybe it had gotten lost perhaps..or maybe it was just going to get a drink by the lake at the last minute...Or maybe..it thought it heard something and turned suddenly prepared to run.."

Before she could hear what the Professor had to say about her findings, Professor was suddenly calling everyone back over towards her. Trying to ignore that horrible squishing beneath her once more. She began listening to the Professor go on with further instructions and heard her say the word, Human Ichnomancy, to which Violet quickly scribbled down on her parchment. She listened very intently to the Professor's instructions and then nodded when she had given them to okay to begin. But sadly..it meant stepping once more into this mud...Violet sighed and then lifted her foot up, and then placed it down softly at first..then she put a little bit of weight into it. She looked at her footprint and then picked up a twig signing her name next to it: Violet Le Veela

SPOILER!!: Violet's Foot Print

Violet then went on to look around for another person's foot print and see what she could study from it, once again trying to ignore this gross feeling. Oh how she wished she could just put her shoes back on already. But..she knew she would have to patient.

Default cat tracks.. catching up first before 2nd activity
Unforgivably Cursed | adultescent

Ethan was all sorts of distracted in this class. People were being distracting.. and he wasn't altogether crazy about this Ichnomancy form of Divination. He started to walk his barefoot feet away from the commotion to try to locate a set of animal prints in the wet sand when Elwood called them back over.

Oh great.. another activity and he still hadn't finished the first one. He listed hastily to the instructions then briskly walked back over to where he thought he saw some animal tracks. Right.. these looked familiar.. like cat prints. He stared at them for a few moments, trying to make some sort of sense of them and what they might be interpreted as and jotted down a few notes to be turned in.

SPOILER!!: Ethan's notes
Cat Prints
These animal tracks do not appear to be very uniform in gait. It seems as there was some sort of hesitation at some point before the tracks resume a more natural appearance. I interpret this to be as something to cause me to hesitate and contemplate on the next step. Once sorted out, I will become confident in my choice and the path that I take.

Default Post 1: Making Footprint (for Jory)
There's some good in this world and it's worth fighting for| LOTR|Whovian|Sherlock Fan

Alyssa walked up to Professor Elwood when she called everyone back to her. She listened as Professor Elwood explained what they would be doing next.

'Cool!! We're going to make our own footprint...but wait we're supposed to read somebody else's?' Alyssa thought to herself. The first part sounded exciting, the second part she was more worried about. Would she be able to interprete the characteristics of the person's print correctly?

'I guess time will tell. First to make my print in the sand.' Alyssa grinned to herself. She walked away from the others until she found a spot that was free from tracks or anyone's footprints.

Then she lifted up her right foot and stomped down as hard as she good. She then gently lifted her foot up so as not to mess up her footprint.

SPOILER!!: Alyssa's footprint

Then she picked up a pebble and wrote her name on the sand next to her footprint.

This belongs to Alyssa Potter....do not step on my footprint!!

Then she went looking for somebody else's print to study.

Reading each others' footprints? Mo sort of wanted to examine his own footprints instead, especially after the interesting tips the professor had given him about those deer tracks. Still, he already knew loads about himself, so it was probably more challenging to go looking at someone else's footprint. He stalked the sand a bit, following behind first one person and then another to see who had the best footprint.

Oh, oh! What if someone had six toes on one foot? That would be totally legit. Did it mean something? He'd have to ask the professor, but only if he was lucky enough to find someone like that.

Mo paused at a clear patch of sand and carefully pressed his foot against the ground. Not so much that the sand around his print cracked and fell away too, but enough that he left a fairly good representation of his foot. "Crikey, it's the dreaded Branxton beast, come out of the mud to stalk its prey," Mo circled his print cautiously before deciding it was exactly what he wanted to leave for someone to examine.

Now he just needed to go stalk his prey. Obviously.
