Upon entering the arena, it may have been a familiar sight for those who attended the first defense against the dark arts lessons from previous terms. The arena was exceedingly dark, windows having been closed off with dark burgundy, almost black looking, drapes that hung from ceiling to floor; more than likely to help with keeping out the cold as well. Deep purple colored mats were lined perfectly from one another in the middle of floor in rows of eight while a deep red mat sat in the front of them all where Professor Romanos currently sitting upon. However, one could still find their way around the room, for scattered around the edges of the arena, far away from where they all would be sitting, were a great deal of candles, both lighting portions of the walls, floors, and ceiling itself in a rather ghostly glow fashion. Glasses with candles that floated in water surrounded with the stationary ones to light up the particularly extra shiny floor were flickering calmly, while the ceiling was lit with an orange glow from the hovering candles, most commonly seen in the Great Hall. Don't worry though. No candle wax will be dripping to the floor.
A strange yet soft music could be heard gently playing in the background; though not loud enough to block out smaller noises such as the rustling of school bags or footsteps. Please come in and become comfortable on one of the mats. Class will be starting shortly!

Boat Position
Okay...there two ways that Kurumi could handle this. She could answer first and then get into the boat position or she could get into the boat position first and then answer.
Oh...wait...she had thought about answering first and THEN getting into the position...and since they were not supposed to go with the first thing they thought of that meant she had to get into the dreaded position and then answer. Ug...
Boat...position...was not... fun...
Uncurling her legs, Kurumi stretched them out straight before leaning back just a little. Legs...straight...leaning back...hand going up...
*FLOP*
Well, that wasn't going to work. Now on her back and off her own mat, Kurumi took several deep breaths and was just about to pushed herself back up when...

Oh! Hey! Out of the box thinking coming up! Kurumi's hand shot up to answer the first part of the question. "A dark wizard wouldn't care that Beezus is in extreme pain right now because they only seek to harm others and have been corrupted by the dark arts to the point where some become disfigured, such as the case with Voldemort." Who had no nose.
There. Two birds. One stone. Resourceful!
So...could Beezus get some help now, please?!

Boat Position
Harvey listened as the professor spoke and then showed them the next position, oh boy this was one position he was not fond of since it was painful to his back and bottom. But he decided to answer the question first before getting into the boat position cause that way its easier to answer rather than having to balance and answer at the same time. "Professor someone would be labelled as dark if they gained pleasure from harming others. One could be...." he thought about one dark witch or wizard that he knew of "Would Bellatrix Lestrange be one?" he was not sure, though she did gain pleasure from harm to others so he suspected that she could be a dark witch but was not 100% sure

Minerva smiled as she moved to her stomach and pulled her legs up and put her hands back. Then she realized she was doing the wrong position.. Ooops.. turns red, good thing it's dark so no one will notice Minerva thought as she hurried and got on her back lifting her self as far off the ground as she could which wasn't to far. This wasn't the most comfortable position, but she tried to stick it out feeling her muscles fight against her. Not playing quidditch this year was going to be a down fall to her activity level.
Trying to put her hand up and stay in position Minerva answered the question with a strain in her voice. "A dark wizard is made a dark wizard by the way they perform the spells. Are they out just to harm people if so then they are a dark wizard. If they are just defending themselves against someone else then no I wouldn't say they were dark. A dark known dark wizard I read about is Morgan Le Fay." That was all she could get out before her voice gave up with the fact she was using all her energy to try and stay in boat position.

Laura suddenly realised something. "Are Owls dark creatures? They only come out a night."
She had been surprised that Laura was still awake in the lesson, especially participating with answering questions and she'd been doing well. "You are partly correct with your second assumption, Miss Hyde. Some people do hide their connection with the dark arts, but not all of them. Albus Dumbledore, however, would not be considered a dark wizard. I'd suggest brushing up a little on the definition of a dark wizard." she smiled encouragingly with a small nod before moving onto the next student.

Cassia had a feeling that if that Ravenclaw threw a shoe at a fellow Snake.....it would be totally different, just saying.
And then Professor Romanos spoke up again and seemed to end the thing. Yeah ,good idea to continue the lesson actually. So the next position was the boat position ,huh? Well, that particular one was fun. Cassia grinned and untangled her legs from the lotus position. She spread her legs before her and then placed her hands under her knees. And the boat position!
With her short legs pulled up Cassia started to swing them a bit. Why? Because it sounded fun. But then the professor asked a question. Cassia fixed her legs and listened to the question. Dark wizards. Well, obviously a dark wizard is the one who practices the dark arts. So her answer should be different.
Hmm....
"A dark wizard is one who teaches defense against the dark arts," Cassia answered absent-mindedly. The second-year only payed attention to what she said when the words were out of her mouth. Well, in that case Professor Romanos is categorized with dark wizards. Hehee. Example given! The woman does realize that they are supposed to give the wrong answer right? Hopefully ,she still has that in mind. And no it had nothing to do with the Professor mistaken her lastname to Somerland twice.
ooc: lol I'm so sorry. That's more of my fail.
The next answers were going relatively well until...
Erm...

As they were asked to shift into a "killer" yoga stunt, Beezus staaaaaaaaaaaaared at the woman for seconds. Killer position? GodricGryffindor'sSword! She was referring to the boat position. Shoot! No. She couldn't do the stunt right now, not when she was enduring the stabbing daggers on her ribcage. She might make it worst. However, granted that she was a Quidditch player and was basically up to giving herself more straining pain that she already had, the Ravenclaw still obliged and did as they were told.
Dislodging from the Lotus position, she brought her knees to the front, then moved sideways, placed her hands palms open on the floor behind her and heaved her lower body uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuppppppppp...
*CRACK!*
She barely got through lifting her legs when it tumbled down into the floor with a rather loud thud. Her ribcaged cracked! IT CRACKED! Beezus winced, eyes streaming as she uncontrollably let out a muffled yelp of pain, feeling a gush of one thousand and one sharp blades permeating throughout the cartilaginous structure. Her arms cowered immediately around her stomach. That hurt, it hurt, really...it hurts!
A little help? Kendall? Rich?
Crying now, she heard the Professor's question and sniffed before answering, "Beaters...they tend to inflict harm to other players with their..." Cough. Cough. "..bludgers..."
Sorry Professor Romanos but she wasn't going to do the boat position.
What in Merlin's beard...
Gaze snapping towards the Ravenclaw, Medea frowned in concern as she lowered her own legs and sat up. She was rethinking this classroom setting for future lessons; the lack of seeing detail being rather unfortunate at the moment. "Beatrice, are you alright? Vot vos that?"
It was not natural sounding at all.

She was quite aware of the troubles at hand. "Yes, thank you Miss Hollingberry."
NOOOO..!! Anything but that. He never got this position right. He always failed and not to mention how hurt his back was after he did the boat position. Maybe he need to answer the question first then he could do the boat position later. He raised his hand "Someone who practice Magic with bad intentions." Now, onto the boat position.
Messer was about to try it when he heard a CRACK sound. What was that? Crack and Bang were not a good sounds. His eyes went to search the origin of the sound. Its coming from Beezus. He was about to ask whether she's okay when she answered Romanos's question.
Beaters?
He was trying out for beaters. Was that mean in Beezus's eyes he's a dark wizard? Frown.

Did Beezus' voice sound funny? Or was that just him imagining things in the dark?
Mhmm? Who was that person who copied her answer? Psshh. At first she couldn't tell who it was because the pain was obscuring most of her senses. But when he added a small explanation, Beezus immediately identified it as the Ravenclaw male Prefect.
Yes, beaters. Those Ravenclaw beaters, especially Dustbin whose bludger always got her.

Then with the help of the lights emitted by the candles, Beezus saw Kurumi turn to look at her. Hiding the pain, she mustered up a smile which just looked like the most ridiculous smile in all of history. "I.." Wince. Wince. "..I'm alright."
Sweat trickled down her forehead, eyes smeared with tears, her arms still hugging her stomach when the Prefect gave her answer to the DADA Professor. Huh? Ehhhh? Yeah, that totally didn't make sense. Then again, not much of things was making sense to her at that current state.

Beezus bit her lip when Professor Romanos addressed her and she gulped so hard to hide any indications that there was something wrong. Because really..nothing was wrong..she just needed a spellotape on her ribcage, that's all. Heh.
"Errmm.." Gulp. "..Nothing Professor, I mean..yes, I am alright." Was the crack that loud that the woman heard it? If it was, then perhaps there was some real damage on her ribcage now? Did it mean Healer Tillstorm would have to regrow an entirely new ribcage for her? The thought was just plain dreadful. "...Errmm.. it was a.." What was eeeeeeeet? "...a rat." A RAT? Boat Position
Annabelle heard the professor ask another question. She tried to get into the boat position. It was quite difficult indeed. She tried to get her legs straight and put her arms behind her straight legs. This was supposed to be called the boat position? Hm..this is quite a weird position. As Belle was struggling she thought of an answer for the question for the professor. What makes someone a dark witch or wizard? she thought to herself. She gave some theories she heard. "Professor what makes a person a dark witch wizard is based on your childhood, such as Lord Voldemort back in the day, he had horrible parents and childhood and they took out their frustrations using spells and even use dark creatures such as snakes to do their bidding. He even changed his name from Tom Riddle to Lord Voldemort because he was ashamed of his name." Belle thought she did pretty well and she heard the stories when he was in power from her auntie.
Beezus bit her lip when Professor Romanos addressed her and she gulped so hard to hide any indications that there was something wrong. Because really..nothing was wrong..she just needed a spellotape on her ribcage, that's all. Heh.

"...Yes, it was a rat Professor. I hit it when it released my legs and it sort of...err.....cracked."
RAT? CRACKED?! WHEN DID RATS CRACK?!
There was something wrong, wasn't there? He was getting that all too familiar sinking feeling in his stomach - and this time he knew it wasn't the bruises, or sitting in this ridiculous position.
Her voice HAD been different. There was something up. He bit his lip, not liking this whole atmosphere. He could barely pick her out over the other side. Luckily he could hear her though.
...There was a rat? A CRACKED rat?
That sounded like broken ribs. *wibble*
"Poor rat," Spike said to himself quietly. He was sure Beezus hadn't meant to hurt it. Maybe once it was found the Professor would let him keep it and nurse it better.
"Did you need any help with the rat, Professor?" Spike found himself asking. Well, he was probably one of the best with small creatures in the room...

Fantastic! The boat position...Hannah couldn't be any more thrilled. She let out a sigh and positioned herself like a boat she assumed. Oh man her abs were already hurting. Before long she knew that her arms and legs would begin to shake. She still to this day doesn't understand why they have to do yoga in DADA.
Hannah was having a difficult time trying to pay attention to the professor because most of her time was devoted to trying not to sweat or shake. "Having evil intent makes someone a dark wizard." Voldemort was the first dark wizard that came to her mind. That was such a big deal. Who else was there though? "Professor there was Bellatrix Lestrange." She knew that she followed Voldemort and was pretty much his right hand man...or girl in this case.

RAT? CRACKED?! WHEN DID RATS CRACK?!
"A rat." she repeated with slight hesitation, disbelief not quite so subtle in her expression. Wouldn't there have been a squeak if there was a rat? Especially if a foot hit it? A loud squeak. She was certain there would've been because she knew a lot about rats. Mostly because she didn't like them.
At all.
"You are more than velcome to the hospital ving if needed, Miss Castell."

Still cautious about the fourth year, Medea was slowly returning to the boat position as Spike spoke up. For the love of Merlin, yes, she did. "If you see it..." And she wasn't so certain that there was one. "...let me know, please."
Or you know, squish it.

Yes, a rat. Well, that was just lame Castell. Not quite the best she could come up with.
The Hospital Wing? Shoot. Brows still furrowed, Beezus wiped the tears on her face with the back of her hand and sniffled. "Uhm, it's okay if I don't Professor." Because really... it was feeling a lot better now. Moreover, she didn't want to miss the rest of the class. They weren't even haflway through the period yet. Although, there was one thing she could ask from the woman, "..Ermm, can I just skip the Boat position? And stick with the Lotus stunt?" the Ravenclaw inquired with a rather weak voice.
Please Professor? One more leg lifting and her whole ribcage would go crumbling altogether.
The fact that Aspen was answering the question alone was...proof she was rethinking answers, and possibly rethinking her rethinks. As usual, she didn't raise her hand because she didn't want Ramanos looking at her.
"I think if a Dark witch ...or wizard ... is any good at being Dark, no one will know their Dark nature until they're too powerful for anything to be done about it. It doesn't happen too often, as history only notes a few truly, devastating Dark Wizards. Most of those have been named already."
There was no RAT, not in animal form anyway. There was the Head Girl, who was a RAT in the whiny tattle tail sense. But not a REAL rat. Aspen was desperate to get her wand out in this class. Commeeee onnn Professsorrrrr. Let the hexing begin! Let's play, Find the Dark Wizard.

Reason: forgot a word.
What in the name of the great Harry Potter is going ON in this class?! Pahahaha
Sutton's eyes widened as they were expected to begin to move into this boat position. Any muscles above her legs were exceedingly lacking in tone, and her abs were not going to appreciate this. Nevertheless, she would give it her best shot. Doing her best to mirror the professor's position, she lifted her legs and shoulders, moving her body into the v-shape of the position.
Then there was something about a rat?! Sutton squealed and jumped up to her feet, looking around for said rat. In the comments that followed, though, she realized that there probably hadn't ever really been a rat, and she sat back down on her mat feeling a bit embarrassed.
Getting back into the difficult boat position, she thought about the question... what did it mean to be a dark wizard? That was hard for Sutton to conceptualized as she had never really learned much about dark wizards. "Maybe... I'm not sure, Professor, but I think it has to be something about how they use magic for innately immoral reasons... or maybe that they use magic to negatively alter the nature of the world or to oppress others or... something..." she trailed off quietly.
Vivi nodded, appreciating the show of confidence, even if the girl had just stabbed her viciously with her wand just prior to blinding her. Vivi was the one, after all, who had started things and thrown her shoe, and she couldn't exactly be testy with Louisa over any of that.
Plus she was just as injured and hadn't gotten mad. Girl had some class. "S'okay. Just wish it hadn't happened in front of Romanos." Vivi was distinctly unlotusy, with slumped shoulders and her elbows on her knees.
No. No moping! She straightened out her form and closed her eyes, her arms going flat against her legs. Ohm v2.0.
She was worried about professor Romanos? Louisa made a mental note to give Vivi her well-known get-to-know-the-professors lecture. Professor Romanos was listed with those you didn't have to worry about messing up with. Class was moving on already and they didn't need more points taken away from them.

Boat Position
Oh thank goodness, this position wouldn't let anyone fall on her in the dark again. They could just fall on their back. Heh heh heh. That was pretty lame, ahem. Clearing her throat, she untangled her legs, stretched them for a few seconds and patted her thighs before sliding her hands under her knees and stretching harder, she tried to position her bottom the same way professor Romanos had but Louisa was pretty sure she would fall backward. So this half-boat position would do.
Their intention was Louisa's first answer. She waited though and tried to think of something else.
She didn't hear the cracking, maybe due to the low music or her deep thinking but she turned her attention to where Beezus was. Louisa frowned, concerned, and tried to actually see the girl's face, but it was almost impossible from where her mat was. When the fellow Ravenclaw claimed to be alright, Louisa squinted her eyes suspiciously at her and then went back to rethinking her answer.
"Dark creatures or wizards are the ones to choose to harm, demolish and cause pain to others." Pause. "Merwyn the Malicious is a medieval dark wizard. I believe there is a portrait of him in the castle somewhere, too." Unpleasant hex and jinx inventor.
Aw yes, she was going to make sure Jacob was alright. Seeing as though the first words from his mouth weren't pain related, he was just fine. "Some a little more obvious than others, but that is good. I'm glad to know you'll defend yourselves against trolls and spells. However, as a few of you have mentioned, some are not so easily recognizable, especially when the danger comes from our own impulses." Someone here had mentioned negative impulses, correct? "But, that is indeed life. When it comes down to it, it is best to listen to your instincts. Your guard should be on it's highest during those times."
Glancing from one student to the other, Medea moved into a new position. "This one's a killer. I'd like you all to move into the boat position." The student's favorite position, yes? "Speaking of impulses, what makes someone a dark witch or wizard? Who are some well known, or perhaps not so well known at all, people that have been labeled as 'dark'?"
Boat Position
Sarah went into the new position. She was going to say desire for power, yet she thought some more of what else to say... "Dark wizards preform magic in order to harm others. I think they are sadistic. Some wizards later regret their actions. Yet some don't like Bellatrix Lestrange was a dark witch, she even broke out of Azkaban"

Milton narrowed his eyes and watched Romanos get into a weird yoga position. He started to unfold himself from the lotus position when she said 'this one's a killer.' Snort. "Was that a pun, professor?" Killer. Dark Arts. GEDDIT? HAH.
Right. Boat position. Milton chuckled to himself before lifting his legs up and struggled to keep them up. Feeeel the buuuuurrnnn. And he would have answered the professor's question, but people had way better ideas than he did.

Boat Position
WHAT kind of position was that?
Theo made a grunting noise as he attempted the boat position but he was struggling to breath after about five seconds, so he flopped back down the the floor, all in a tizzy. "I'll pass on that position, professor." He muttered.
The question was a toughy. "I only really know about Voldemort." For obvious reasons. But growing up as a muggle, he was always kind of outta the know.
"And killing people would make someone a dark wizard. And I know that Voldemort killed so many people that mother nature decided to sacrifice his nose and his hair." So yeah... tip... don't pull a Voldemort and make horcuxes. Cos you WILL lose your nose.

Sierra sighed. Why couldn't they just sit in a DESK?! She whipped around into the boat position. The only reason she could do this without feeling like she was dying was because of Quidditch. Oh, how she wished she was out on the pitch right this very second...
She raised her hand. "I said before that I do think there's some selfish motives behind the Dark Arts. So not everybody has a selfish reason, but the ones who intentionally get involved just to hurt others or benefit themselves are pretty selfish," she said.
...and a dark witch or wizard?
"What about Remi Deveraux?" she suggested. "He set up these fight clubs here at Hogwarts not that long ago." Fight clubs...creepy.

If she was suuuure then. Medea was still going to be keeping an eye on her just in case though. "Of course. Ve're going to be moving on from it in just a minute anyvays."

Medea had to think about that one.
Oh! "Not really." she smiled, chuckling quietly. "Good one though."
She didn't need to see to know that the students weren't not enjoying this pose. Just a little longer though, while she got back into speaking normally. "I can honestly say, beaters are not considered dark people. Their intent is for purely game purposes, and intent is indeed a rather important factor when labeling a witch or wizard as dark." she nodded slowly, addressing the whole class. "As is their primary studies, which in this case, would be the dark arts; Voldemort, Bellatrix, Merwyn, and Grindelwald being just a few good examp- Remi Deveraux? Fight clubs here in Hogwarts? Really?"
The professor looked towards Sierra. A delayed reaction from her, but this was new information to Medea. Anyways...moving on!
"Power is definitely the more common desire a dark witch or wizard seeks when studying and/or practicing the dark arts, as well as the lack of remorse while most of their actions involves harming someone or, yes, selfish reasons. I think it was Miss Lecium whom mentioned the root of these people turning to darker natures was in their childhoods. Upbringings and the settings in which one lives when younger can definitely influence a person's thoughts and actions, to the point of guiding them towards the darker arts, however...this is not always the case."
Medea paused momentarily to stand up. "You can lower your legs and stand up now. We're going to go into a position called The Triangle. I promise, it's not bad." Demonstrating the pose, she leaned to the side and raised her arm vertical to the ground, touching her ankle with the other. And now continuing...
"Some may surround themselves with certain objects with deadly qualities, brew potions of more sinister properties, or become fascinated with creatures we all label as dark themselves. Most of the time though, we are not aware of these interests, which can become dangerous for us. What we can notice, and hopefully if any of you do you are well protected, is their choice of spells. Dark wizards, as we know, favor curses, especially the unforgiveables, but jinxes and hexes are not so foreign when it comes down to it. Can anyone tell me one dark spell and why it is considered dark?"

The Triangle
Oh thank MERLIN. If Vivi was supposed to be a boat, her seas were stormy and she was nearly sunk. She collapsed into an ungainly mess before scrambling up and trying out the next pose. Triangle. Easier. She always did like maths.
And it was becoming well apparent to Vivi that her physical training in Defense was well behind the curve. She was a fast draw and good with hexes and defensive spells, but she wasn't good at yoga. It didn't seem possible that would keep her from becoming an Auror, but... who knew?
Oh, question. Vivi peered up at the professor through a fall of her hair. Not her first thought, which was an Unforgivable, so she went with something else. "What about the spell to create a Horcrux, Professor? I can't think of any non-Dark use for such a spell. Why wouldn't that spell be considered Unforgivable too?"
If she was suuuure then. Medea was still going to be keeping an eye on her just in case though. "Of course. Ve're going to be moving on from it in just a minute anyvays."

Laura looked at the Professor and did the pose and stared at the Professor for a couple of secends was she shocked that Laura was still awake in the class, there was something the matter with her. "Everything alright Professor?" Laura asked as she listened to the thing about a rat, there was certainly no rats in this class she was sure the Professor wouldn't allow any in her class. "Professor well there the Imperio Curse." Laura sighed. "Using that will earn you a one way ticket to Azkaban right?" Laura had heard that was a really bad curse to use.

Beaters as dark people? Meh. Ella would have looked around for Theodore, knowing he was probably nodding in agreement of that statement and she had the urge to practice her sour lemon glare on him. Unfortunately, the third year had enough trouble not collapsing on her mat at the moment. She BEAMED when Romanos confirmed that beaters weren't dark, making a mental note to bring this up in the Little Lurker ever started complaining about it again.
Ella was going to die. I mean...not literally die...but her arms were KILLING from holding her legs up. The boat position really was a killer! O___O Was Professor Romanos a mind reader? Cause just as the third year was about to fall over in defeat, the woman allowed them to drop their legs. IT WAS A DADA MIRACLE! Without a moments hesitation the small blonde's legs dropped to the floor in front of her and she heaved a sigh of relief. CrazyBoatPoseTryingToKillHer...
Right. The triangle pose was MUCH easier to do. Ella moved into it with ease and thought about the dark spells that she knew and why they were considered dark. Hmm..."Professor, the stinging hex could be considered dark as it causes the victim pain though...I guess it could also be used for defensive purposes. It would all depend on the caster's intentions, like you said before."
Can anyone tell me one dark spell and why it is considered dark?"
The Triangle
Kai's body was beginning to turn on him, he could feel the pangs of exercise taking hold of his legs and arms and he was beginning to wish he didn't come to the lesson after all. He needed to stay focused on learning and he wouldn't notice the pain, right?
One dark spell..."the killing curse" Kai originally thought, but he needed to choose a new answer as per the professor's wishes. "Would alarte ascendare be considered a dark spell? After all, what other motive would you have to shoot someone into the air other than to cause them harm?". To Kai, that made sense. Having been on the receiving end of it he knew it wasn't the most pleasant of experiences.
Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite
She. Did. Not. Like. The. Boat. Position.
She could scarcely managed to stay balanced for very long and had only managed to topple over with each new attempt. After a while she just embraced the toppling over and began having fun with it, not realizing that the Professor had asked another question. Of course she had another answer but she couldn't bother thinking up a new one so she decided to continue getting into the boat position and toppling over. Weeeeeeeeeeeee.
Unfortunately her last topple made her fall badly and she found herself in a very painful new position.
Yeah...that was enough boat for a good, long time. Alexa forced herself into a sitting position and tried focusing once again on the Professor who was now speaking. For a while she was tempted to continue toppling over but threw that impulse away when the Professor asked another question. Oh. A new position too.
Heeeeeyyy! That one wasn't so hard!!! Lex hopped up from her mat and quickly got into the next position. Ooooo, she could see the ceiling now, barely in the dim light but you know--
Focus!
Her hand began to wiggle in the air in an attempt to gain the Professor's attention. Hopefully she could see her. "Professor, I happen to know that Silencio is a VERY dark spell and the reason for that being it robs me of my speech then I'm forced to be quiet!!! It's terrible dreadful really and I know a few DARK students who like using it on me!" Such a horrible spell, that one. "I don't like the quiet!!!!"

Thank Merlin they were moving on. And also thank Merlin that they didn't have to do that one pose for very long. Jake couldn't get his balance quite right and kept falling. But this next one seemed pretty easy. Standing up, he leaned over and held his ankle with one hand while raising the other one.
So. Dark spells? The obvious one was the killing curse. Jake pursed his lips, trying to get himself to think a different way. But... he wasn't feeling very creative, so he just said the next answer that came to mind.
"The Imperius curse. That one's usually used to make people do bad things, right? So the person in control doesn't get blamed. And... it could be used for some bad things."
