Astronomy One :: the Courtyard

The first thing you may notice as you enter the stone square courtyard are the strange looking devices that form a perimeter around the area. Professor Burbage has stopped in the middle of the courtyard by the Wishing Fountain and is waving her hands enthusiastically for you to join her.

"Thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis way darlings! Over here! You may leave your bags over there if you wish, but doooooooo bring your bottle rockets with you!"

OOC: this will be the final activity for lesson one (you can find part one here). If you were unable to participate in the first half of the lesson you CAN STILL participate in this portion - simply pretend you have been here all along.

Excitedly Cassia followed her Professor among the other students. She made sure not bump her precious rocket against anything or anyone because she had just made this masterpiece with her bare hands…..well and her wand of course. Nodding at the Professor, Cassia put her bag where the woman pointed.

As she did so she noticed the weird-looking thing. The second year squinted her eyes at it, what are you? She wondered silently. Obviously it had something to do with the lesson right. It didn't look like a piece of decoration. Unless the old woman thought so considering she called those couple of old men studdmuffins. You could expect anything from her really. Oh but that was ignored for the woman held a very interesting lesson that rose to Cassia's liking.

So Cassia stood close to her colleagues her rocket clutched with both hands, waiting for further instructions.

Gideon followed the woman....from the astronomy tower, down allllll the way to the ground floor of the castle and out into the courtyard. The area that appeared to be their destination as Professor Burbage had stopped and turned around, waving again for their attention. He set his bag down near the edge of the courtyard, making note of where so he could retrieve it later before movin closer to the woman, not able to help but notice the weird things littered about.

What were those things?

CruppieMom89 09-10-2012 04:58 AM

Logan, too.

As they made their way out into the bright courtyard, Sutton scanned the rest of the class, looking for...

Yep! Found him!

Making her way over to Logan, she grabbed him by the hand and pulled him along to put their bags off to the side. "Launch buddies?" she said with a biiiig smile before grabbing ahold of him again and walking to where Professor Burbage had congregated all of the students and their rockets.

FearlessLeader19 09-10-2012 04:59 AM

Jory spotted the Professor waving at the arriving students to get their attention. He left his bag where she had indicated and went over to join her, rocket in hand.

As he did, he took in the devices on the ground around the Courtyard. "Rocket launchers, maybe,'' he said to himself as he reached the Wishing Fountain. The boy waited patiently for the rest of the class so the class could resume.

FireboltAvis88 09-10-2012 05:00 AM

Alyssa followed the Professor out into the courtyard carrying her bottle rocket. The first thing she saw was the strange devices that were set up alongside the perimeter of the courtyard. Part of the device looked like the bottle rocket that she had just made in the classroom.

She placed her backpack against the wall of the courtyard and then walked over to where the Professor was standing near the Wishing Fountain carrying her bottle rocket with her.

SilverDragon 09-10-2012 05:03 AM

Silvia followed the class into the courtyard and immediately noticed the strange devices all around. Those must be for launching the rockets! She was so excited! She may have only just met this professor at the beginning of the lesson, but she already becoming a favorite.

Silvia set her bag off to the side and walked forward with her rocket in hand, ready to get this rocket launch started!

Hey Ju 09-10-2012 05:10 AM

Sophie followed the line with her rocket in hands and her bag over her shoulder. That was a loooooong way to go! She wasn't used to walking so much inside the Castle, since her Common Room wasn't that far above. All of the Gryffindors and Ravenclaws were problably in shape just by going up and down everyday, Meeerlin!

Walking towards the place the professor was, she placed her bag where the oler witch indicated and then joined her classmates with her rocket still in hand.

DaniDiNardo 09-10-2012 05:17 AM

Hmm....she never thought they would end up here. This was the big field trip? So they wouldn't be crossing the lake and heading out into the world for a bit...such a shame but oh well, this would do for now.

Throwing down her bag pack where she saw others throwing theirs, she walked over to the group of children that were already there. Her fingers tightened around her rocket. The time was drawing closer to let him go and she didn't wannnnaaaa!!!! If she had know that it would come to this she would have made two rockets then gotten rid of the other one!!!!

Sniffle.... it was so hard to let go...

MudInMyBlood 09-10-2012 05:22 AM

Hannah followed the line of other students to where the professor stood waving her hands a bit too enthusiastically in her opinion. Hannah laid her eyes on a strange dangerous looking contraption. Merlin! This was going to be interesting.

She made her way over to the professor, rocket it tow and waited for further instruction.

kayquilz 09-10-2012 05:26 AM

Elliot followed the line...all the way down to the courtyard..she was quite used to it by now, though, being a 'Claw. It was whatever.

She gently set her bag down and tucked her lacy rocket under her arm...she went and stood next to Hannah...the professor looked really silly right now...waving her arms about...she sent a smirk to her friend, and nudged her, then nodded at Soapy..heehee...

ashfig 09-10-2012 05:37 AM

Cora excitedly followed the crowd outside. Ahead of her, she saw Elliot, and quickened her pace to catch up. She hummed to herself happily. Science was just so simple. Even though Astronomy barely counted as science, it was good enough, and definitely seemed to exceed Cora's somewhat low expectations for the class.

She just hoped her rocket would work.

pundantic 09-10-2012 06:21 AM

Selina followed Burbage all the way down to the grounds before she started to get worried about just WHERE this woman was taking them. If this lesson was another lesson in Atlantis or in the Forbidden Forrest Selina would gladly bow out. Besides, her rocket would be more useful to her if she set it off in the Great Hall. That way everyone would see her rocket and whoever knew where Mortimer was could tell her of his whereabouts. Because finding her bat was more important than anything... Yep.

But once they got down to the courtyard she was more calm. At least they were safe. Wait.. hold on... was that a...?! WHAT WAS BURBAGE GOING TO DO WITH THAT?!

sweetpinkpixie 09-10-2012 07:52 AM

Was Professor Burbage...alright? She had seemed to have smacked her head rather hard against the door before they had all begun to file out of the classroom. Kurumi was too nervous to ask, seeing as there was potential for the woman to twist her concern for her accusing her of being old elderly.

Bottle rocket tucked under her one arm, Kurumi set her bag down near the entrance and hurried over to stand beside Selina - who looked as though she had just seen a chocolate frog or something. Maybe she needed cookies...Kurumi could give her cookies at the end of the lesson. That is IF Selina hadn't taken from the OTHER hidden stash that she kept in her school bag...

Saz Hale 09-10-2012 08:10 AM

Arabella-Marie followed Professor Burbage and her fellow classmates down to the courtyard and carrying her bottle rocket under her arm she placed her bag in the corner and made her way over to where her fellow classmates were stood

Lottiepot 09-10-2012 08:35 AM

Plod plod plod.

The students all followed the Professor like they were mice following Hamelin. Terry had assumed a position in the centre of the pack, not really with anyone in particular. He was humming quietly under his breath, something he often did when he was in a really good mood. His bottle rocket was swinging with his arm movement, left, right, and every so often he looked down to see whether the wings were still attached. Luckily his newley learned sticking charm was working perfectly.

It didn't take too long to get down to the Courtyard but the massive flight of steps was tiring on the boys legs. He glanced at the mysterious objects, launchers he proposed, and stood near the fountain where the Professor was stood. He waited for further instruction, his eyes drifted over the students and out towards the grounds as he stood.

Quick Quotes Quill 09-10-2012 09:01 AM

Gwendolyn made her way out of the classroom, following the Professor from the Astronomy tower all the way to the Courtyard. Truth be told, she had been wondering what they would be doing next, but she wasn’t able to figure out what the Professor had in mind for the last part of the lesson. Waiting patiently somewhere close to the wishing fountain, the fifth year overheard Jory say something about Rocket launchers. She eyed the Hufflepuff for a moment before looking back at the devices.

Perhaps he was right.

Still eyeing the devices, Gwen tried to figure out how those would work. She eventually drew her attention back to Professor Burbage ,and waited patiently for further instructions.

Magical Soul 09-10-2012 10:07 AM

It was easy to follow the line of students through the castle... up until you reach the moving staircases where the line would cut and you had to make detours and some running to catch up again. Good thing she'd lived in this castle for six school years, it paid off. Once everyone filed out to the courtyard, the Ravenclaw slipped her bag down from her shoulder and laid it against one of the pillars lined around the courtyard, and approached the excited professor.

The devices circling the place caught Louisa's attention and she found herself staring at the closest one to her as she waited for further instructions. Hmm...

Laura followed the woman into the courtyard, she didn't know if her rocket would be any good but at least she had made it and now she knew how to make more for when she was ever bored or anything, though she wouldn't make any whilst she was at Hogwarts maybe when she was out and about next summer, she could make a few the muggle way after all they made rockets.

Tazzie 09-10-2012 10:26 AM

The Ravenclaw followed the line which was lead by their old Astronomy Professor. She still felt a bit upset with the woman not telling her it was alright not to drink ALL the soda in her bottle. Hmmp.

Bottle still tucked under her arm, Beezus left her bag on the Entrance of the square and walked over to where her classmates had stationed themselves as they wait for the arrival of their other fellows. She brushed her free hand through her hair as she stood and eyed the little devices around the area. Curiously, she shifted her gaze to the Professor. Just what are we really doing here Professor Burbage?

Launch their bottle rockets? Or was there something else?

Marion Burbage 09-10-2012 10:34 AM

Professor Burbage siiiiiiiiimply could not contain her excitement for what was to come. All her little Hogwartian rocket scientists were going to truly blast off. OH! It was all so exciting! Clapping her hands together loudly a few times, she picked up one of the strange objects and held it out for everyone to see. "Alright dears, THIS is a bottle rocket launcher. You need to plug your bottle rocket on the launcher like so." She swiftly demonstated with her partly filled bottle of water. "Dooooooo be sure that you have water in your rocket before you place it, dears. Aguamenti Charm should do the trick."

She then set the launcher with her bottle rocket attached to it on the ground several yards away from everyone and wiggled herself back over to the group. "Now, muggles launch bottle rockets by using a device called a bicycle pump to pump air into the rockets until there it toooooo much pressure built up inside the bottle and POP! It shooooooooots up up UP into the air!!" She would stop here to test them on which of Newton's laws this was best connected to, but they had already covered that in the classroom. "We will not be doing things this way. We will be using a spell. Now, please repeat after me, explaeris!" She paused for a moment to allow students to repeat after her several times before moving on. "The wand movement it rather simple, but can be very tiring. First you must trace a circle in the air over your bottle, say the incantation explaeris, and then....you must flap your arm darlings.

Professor Burbage wiggled her way back over to her bottle rocket, her heels clanking against the stone as she did. "Explaeris!" she chirped after having traced a circle over her bottle and then....she began to flap like a mother goose. FLAP FLAP FLAP FLAP FLAP FLAP FLAP FLAP! "You must keeeeep flapping darlings! Stopping will cause air to escape from your bottle and then your rocket will never launch." FLAP FLAP FLAP FLAP.

The bottle on the launcher began to expand slightly as the air was pumped into it until....

*POOOOOOOOOOOOOOP.....SHOOOOOOOOOOOM*

The bottle rocket SHOT off of the launcher and into the air to which Marion laughed loudly and clapped her hands. "Just like that darlings. Now, go ahead and find a launcher, set your bottle on it, make sure to practice the incantation and wand movements separately, and when you are ready you may begin! OH! Remember, no more than half way when you fill your bottles, dears." So go forth little rocket scientists! GOOOOOOO!

OOC:
Steps you should RP
  • filling your bottle rocket with water
  • attaching your bottle rocket to the launcher
  • practicing the incantion (Explaeris) & wand movementt (tracing a circle over the bottle and FLAPPING YOUR ARM)
  • launching your rocket
You should accomplish this in at least 5 quality posts. You have until 13th September at 10 am GMT to complete this task. Have fun and interact with each other! Any questions may be asked IC to Professor Burbage or OOC via VM/PM

Following the professor, they made their way outside and Juliet could not stop smiling about it. This is just going to be super fun. Juliet then placed her bag over to the area that the professor had mentioned but she still held the rocket in her hands, after which, she walked towards where she was. Juliet saw the weird looking machine.... is it some kind of machine? Or is it a muggle inven--- well, of course it's a muggle invention.

When the professor had explained on what it was, well now it made more sense. It's a rocket launcher... still weird but making sense. Okay, so the first step is to put water inside the bottle. Taking her wand out of her robe pockets, Juliet pointed her wand inside the bottle "Aguamenti" then water sprinkled inside of the bottle. CHECK!

Once they had gotten to the courtyard, Tay sat her things down and joined the professor, who was waving like a crazy person, in the middle of the courtyard near the wishing fountain. Taylor watched the professor demostrate how to launch the rocket. She was considering whether the professor was crazy or not... this plus the whole studmuffin thing was making her wonder. Tay flinched at the pop, not expecting it to have been that loud. The professor was now saying it was their turn. Taylor sighed and grimaced, glancing at her rocket then at the launcher. Great... Tay took out her wand, getting ready to do the aquamenti charm. She adjusted the rocket in her hand, "Aquamenti!" Taylor waited until she got halfway, making sure that she didnt go over halfway because of the warning the professor had given them. The first step completed, Tay thought about the second step. Attaching the rocket to that launch thingy...

Clearly Professor Burbage loved Space so much that she was living on Mars..

Terry didn't mind the Professors craziness though, she was fun and fun wasn't what he was expecting from his first few lessons at school. It was encouraging, he wanted to study now he knew what to expect and he definitely wanted to see this rocket fly. He listened intently to the Professor, taking in exactly what to do and repeating the spell over and over in his head when she asked them too.

The flapping the wings thing though, the second year was absolutely certain that rockets didn't need to flap their wings, they just flew. Why did they have to look like a flailing chicken, he thought they were supposed to be like Astronauts! His eyes lit up when it worked though as the rocket launched upwards with a loud pop. It looked amazing and now the twelve-year-old was perfectly willing to look like a deranged goose. Anything for science, right?

Once she had finished explaining their task, Terry wandered over to a vacant rocket launcher and stared down at the strange contraption. It didn't look too complicated and he was sure that he would be able to accomplish what he had to do. He looked around at the other students and hoped that someone would join him in his mission.

After all, Astronauts never flew by themselves did they?

"Flap?'' Jory though amused as he watched the Professor demonstrate. "Looks like a weird dance.'' He grinned to himself. He thought he'd feel a bit silly while doing it. "Ah well, there's still some time before we get to that.''

Now onto completing the steps. As other students began the first step, the boy pulled out his wand. He pointed it inside the bottle. "Aquamenti!" he said and water began to pour in. When it was about half filled, he stopped the flow.
