Juliette finished the notes she took, cleaned her area, and put the bottle rocket at the edge of her desk. She couldn't think of it off the top of her head (who actually could?) and decided that if she wanted to participate in this discussion, she could have to use the notes she just took. Looking over them, the anwser slowly started to dawn on her. She couldn't understadn every word, since she wasn't a rocket scientist, but she could figure out the key stuff, and putting the words together she realized the answer.

"Newton's law of proportionality." She said calmly, biting her lip and hoping she wasn't completley wrong. It sounded close to her though, so she might be fine.

Laura looked around and everyone was finished and she was still at the beginning, she quickly finished her rocket, she did it so fast people might have thought that she had one prepared from earlier but in fact, she was just concentrating so hard, once she had it finished she listened too what the Professor said.

After cleaning up his work area, Logan bit his lip thoughtfully as he tried to think of answering the question with all the Professor had just taught them. It was a shame he wasn't great at science. After a few minutes he raised his hand to attempt an answer. "I think that the first statement: Rockets create thrust by expelling a propellant goes with the Third Law: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." He paused for a moment and then continued. "The propellant in this case is water, and the action of it spilling out of the rocket causes the thrust that pushes it away from the earth. So the action of the water spilling out causes the equal and opposite reaction of pushing it upwards." Hopefully this made sense, or he would look like a fool in front of Ness.

"Now, if you could all please look at the board or refer to your notes on Newton's laws of motion," she said as she tapped her wand against the board.


"Without understanding these laws, mankind would have neeeeeeever been able to launch aaaaaaanything into space. Not satellites. Not monkies. Not humans. And ceeeeeertainly not rockets, which is why we are studying them. It is because of our understanding of these that all that was made possible and the field of astronomy was able to rise to new heights." She picked up her bottle rocket and held it up for the class to see. "Your rockets will be using water as its 'fuel' source. Meaning that water shall be the propellant that comes out of the nozzle here and shooooooots it up into the air when we pump air into it. In order to accomplish this, you will need to produce enough thrust. This muuuuuuuuust be greater than the weight of your rocket. For example, say this rocket here weighs 10 pounds," which it didn't, but that was not the point. "An upwards thrust of 10 pounds would keep your rocket stationary and at a constant level. 12 pounds of it wouldn't launch your rocket very high, but the trust would be greated than the weight of this rocket so it wooooooould move."

She paused for a moment tapped her bottle with her wand, filling it about 1/3 of the way with water. "Some of you may wonder why we cannot just use air to launch our rockets. The answer is rather simple darlings. Water is almost 800 times more dense than air. So, when your bottle rockets expel water, they will be expelling total mass and this increased mass results in increased rocket performance!" She paused for a moment so that students could write down any notes they wish. "Noooooow, some of you may be thinking, BUT PROFESSOR!? WHY DIDN'T YOU FILL YOUR ROCKET ALL THE WAY WITH WATER?! Tooooooo much water will cause your bottle rocket to be toooooo heavy and therefore hinder its flight. Too much of a good thing can be bad darlings."

But she was somewhat getting ahead of herself here. Oops. "Please keep all this in mind as you think over the following statements please, darlings." And she gave her wand a flick towards the board again.



She then turned to face the class, her smile as wiiiiiiiiiiiiide as can be. "Please select ONE of these statements and think about which of Newton's laws of motion best fits the statement. You may discuss among your classmates or siiiiiiiiiiiimply think on your own. You may share your thoughts whenever you are ready. We will just discuss this for a feeeeeeeeeew minutes and then head outside."

Alright. Off you go now all you future rocket scientists!

OOC: we will be moving on to the final part of the lesson approximately 24 hours from this post. Please pick just ONE of the statements above :)



After decorating her rocket she was ready for the rest of the lesson. Faye was having a blast, she never knew that Hogwarts lessons could be this fun! It was great for her. She was starting to love Hogwarts so much.

Faye listend to Professor lecture portion and then tried to think about her questions.

"Well statement two, goes with Newton's second law, because it talks about the mass of objects." Faye said smiling, hoping she at the very least didn't sound foolish.

Faye couldn't wait to set off her rocket!!! She wanted to soo bad.

Silvia quickly scrambled for her quill and parchment when the professor began explaining the theory. Uh huh, that made sense; the force of the thrust had to be stronger than the weight of the rocket. Got it. She scribbled that down on her parchment, as well as a few other points that had been made. Silvia looked up when the professor gave them their next task. Quickly, she straightened up her desk and then turned her eyes to the board.

Well, to her, all three of those laws could apply to both of those statements in some aspect; or well, all three could apply to the overall process of shooting a rocket. As for these specific statements…

She raised her hand. “Professor, I think the first statement sounds like the third law, the Action-Reaction law. The expelling of a propellant is the action, which causes the creation of thrust, the reaction.”

The look of pity that Burbage sent her way did not go unnoticed by Selina. Was it her bat? Honestly, she was just trying to do everything in her power to find Mortimer. A little bit of free advertising never hurt anyone. Then again, they were talking about rockets here. But a rocket couldn't really do that much damage, could it? No. She was just over thinking it.

These thoughts flew from her mind when Burbage moved on to talk about Newton's laws. They all were laws that she had heard at least once in her life, but not necessarily in this exact wording. After all, they were sort of famous laws and such. However, when Burbage asked them all to pick one of the two statements and expand upon which law fit it best Selina could not help but keep looking at the first law. It made the most sense in Selina's mind. An object at rest stayed at rest and an object in motion stayed in motion. That was probably why the rockets moved up. They just kept moving. So the first statement- Rockets create thrust by expelling a propellant- made a lot of sense with the first law.

She wasn't sure if she was exactly right, so when she rose her hand she kept her explanation short... JUST in case she was wrong. Which was very likely. She was, after all, not a rocket scientist. "Ma'am...? I personally think that the first law goes hand-in-hand with your first statement. Once you get a rocket moving, which in this case would be our water, it keeps going up until it is in space. You just need to give it a small push." Like Newton balls. That was an amazing little contraption.

OOC: oh goodness gracious hEAvens. I am afraid I cannot reply to all you darlings seeing as Peeves and my not-as-young-as-they-used-to-be fingers and mind have made me lose my reply SEEEEVERAL times. I HAVE read everything you have said and participation has been noted. I am sure you would all much rather play than listen to my ramblings anyway ;) So sorry, dears.

Professor Burbage was siiiiiiimply tickled by how smart and thoughtful all these students were. Not that she expected any less from Hogwarts students. The opening feast had left her a little...unsure about coming back and teaching namely because of the oooooooooobivously lowering standards of her old house, but they were all making up for it now.

Of course she should have seen some students going much deeper than she had intended the discussion to go - bringing in other variables and conditions that would influence the behavior of their bottle rockets and Newton's laws. Her purpose had been to create a very basic picture and understanding of how the laws of motion were linked to, well, what they were about to do.

"Very good my darlings, very good inDEED! The first statement there iiiiiiiiiiis best paired with Newton's third law of motion and the second statement with his second law of motion. The key word here is best, dears. Of course all the laws are interconnected someway and all have influence on a rocket's flight, so none of you are exaaaaaaaactly incorrect in your thinking." Hopefully they had all been paying attention to what their classmates had been saying because there had been some fantaaaaaastic answers in there. Marion checked her sparkly gold watch on her wrist for a moment, eager to go into a little more explanation when she GASPED. "Oh goodnees gracious hEAvens! Darlings! ," she chirped with a slight wiggle of her bottom as she scurried around to the back of her desk and grabbed her bottle rocket and a pair of expensive looking sunglasses. "Weeeeeeeeeee are going on a bit of a field trip. If you could please bring your things and bottle rockets with you and follow me. We will not be returning to the classroom, so dooooooon't leave anything behind."

She then slipped her sunglasses on and headed towards the door of the classroom. "Please form a line, dears."

OOC: Please RP your student getting their things together and meeting Professor Burbage at the door. I will post again soon with further instructions. Even if you were unable to complete the RPing portion of making your rocket you CAN simply pretend that your character finished building it and continue to play.

Well, she supposed to must have made a pretty good case because Professor Burbage agreed with Sutton that the second statement and the second law were the BEST combination. Taken aback by the sudden change in train of thought, Sutton began doing exactly as the Professor asked, gathering her things, and lining up first at the door.

NEAT! Lex loved field trips!...Even if it meant saying goodbye to a dear rocket. Sigh. Maybe she would take him on the field trip and watch the others launch theirs while he stayed safely wrapped in her arms...that sounded good!

Oh but she hadn't cleaned her area like she was instructed to! Shuffling around her desk she got the scraps and left overs then hurried to the nearest bin. Done!

Now for her stuff seeing as they wouldn't be coming back to the class. She slung her bag over her right shoulder and clutched the rocket firmly before heading to the line that the others were supposed to be forming. There was no questioning it, she was going to enjoy this part of the class the most. It made all the pictures and complicated laws seem worth it...if only for a little bit.

The first statement with the Third Law? And the second statement with the Second Law. Meh. Her idea was incorrect then. Hmmp. She needed to study more about this then, it might come out in their Final Exams. Making a mental note to do some studying after class, the Ravenclaw also began to return her things inside her bag, making sure everything was in place, slung it over her shoulder and brought her rocket bottle under her arm.

Field trip, huh? At the Grounds? Well..she could really use that. After all, she still haven't checked the new features there. With a nod at the Professor, Beezus lined in herself with her classmates.

Alyssa quickly wrote down the answers to Professor Burbage's question matching both statements with Newton's Law of Motions before packing up her writing materials into her backpack. Slinging it over her shoulder, she slowly picked up her bottle rocket and joined the other students who were standing with the Professor as the classroom door.

They were going to get to fly their rockets!! YAY!!

Kurumi's hands flew over her parchment again, jotting down notes on things and squishing things here and there in the margins of her parchment. She probably just should get a fresh piece of it out of her bag but....oh well!

Field trip? Kurumi's mind went racing as to what that could possibly entail - Magic School bus anyone? Still, the Gryffindor swiftly packed up her things, tucked her rocket under her arm, and made her way towards the door to stand in line with everyone else.

This lesson was becoming more and more interesting. Orr wondered where they were heading as she packed up her things including her muggle paints. She zipped up her bag and grabbed her rocket as she headed to wait with Professor Burbage by the door.

Seeing as most of the students were still packing up, she took the opportunity to say to Professor Burbage how much she was enjoying the lesson so far.

Gideon had simply been listening to the discussion on Newton's laws, not really sure of his own thoughts on the subject being brought up. Not that it wasn't interesting or he wasn't paying attention. Quite the contrary he was paying attention to what was being talked about by his classmates , occasionally jotting down notes and thoughts in the process sure it might come up in homework or the class final perhaps.

Then Professor Burbage exclaimed and he looked up from his parchment to see what was the matter. Oh right, they still had the activity to do. Cleaning up his area as he stood up, Gideon then gathered his own belongings back up into his sachel. He then slung it over his shoulder, picked up his rocket and went to the door to line up as directed.

Cassia nodded approvingly at herself....yeah that wasn't weird. She had made some point in her explaining though that wasn't important now. They were going in a field trip to launch the rockets as Cassia guessed. The second year beamed at the thought. She was actually excited because she was going outside not really did she know much about launching rockets but it sounded to be fun right? It should be.

So gathering her stuff and pushing them into her bag, Cassia stood sliding the bag over her shoulder and holding the rocket she had just made. She headed to the door where few others students stood there. The second year stood in the line waiting for the up-coming part of this interesting lesson. She stood rocking on the balls of her feet impatiently. Come on people move already we've got some rockets to fire!

Oh good. They were wrapping things up...Elliot checked her watch, and then remembered...CRUD. They still had to..rocket stuff. Ugh. She wasn't looking forward to it. she just didn't want to be an absolute mess! But maybe it would be fun. Who knew.

she cleaned up her desk, and she slipped her notes and her quill into their correct pouches in her lacy backpack. She then grabbed a hold of her rocket, the lacy thing, and began to make her way to the door...she tried to catch Hannah or Jayden's eye...she saw that Hannah's was all Slytherin-ed out. That was cool...she guessed.

Hannah listened to the professor and took some hurried last minute notes. She was right in her thinking, which didn't surprise her at all. She gathered her belongings and shoved her rocket under her arm. She followed the rest of the students to the door and stood in line. She had to admit she was kind of looking forward to flying the rocket. After all maybe her rocket would malfunction and take out a puffer. She couldn't get in trouble for an accident right?

"Holy Orion's BELT!" she scoffed as she rubbed her forehead with her hand. Was she seeing stars? Oh, no, just the reflection of the sunlight through the window.

Ho ho ho ho.

Sophie's head whipped in Elliot's direction once the girl actually agreed with her on something and she actually said it out loud for the whole class to hear it!!!

The world. Is was coming to an end.

The third year's eyes were so wide and she was SO shocked she didn't quite hear the other people's answers. Evil Elliot had agreed with her and told EVERYONE. Whoooaaaa! Sophie blinked at the eagle and gave her a curious look. It wasn't like she liked the Ravenclaw any better now, but... well. That was something!

Once the professor instructed them to get their things and form a line, Sophie put away the parchment, quill and everything, pocketed her wand, threw her bag over her shoulder and grabbed her bottle rocket.

EEP! They were moving fast! She quickly looked again around the desk to make sure she didn't leave anything behind and rushed to the line at the door, following everyone as they left the classroom.

Ira beamed as her theory was proved right. The first statement did agree with the Third Law.

And now came the exciting part. Field trip! Where they would be launching their rockets! Fun fun fun! Ira excitedly packed all her items into her bag, and slinging it across the shoulder, got up. Taking her bottle rocket carefully with the other free hand, she made her way to the door, to join the line as instructed.
