The beginning of term, new faces, old faces, new adventures... yeah Bentley was excited. As she stood in the entrance to Greenhouse Four, she rocked back and forth on the ball of her feet, her hands clasped in front of her.
"Good morning everyone! The lesson will begin shortly, in the meantime please take a seat." She motioned her hands to a few rows of benches that have been placed near the entrance to the greenhouse for the purpose of that lesson.
OOC: The lesson has officially started, DO NOT announce your character arriving from this point onward, as they will be late, and late = trouble. If you haven't done so already then please read through the Herbology Rules and Expectations and the SS Site Rules. All SS Board Rules apply. IC rule breaking will result in IC punishment, OOC rule breaking will result in OOC punishment. Please behave appropriately and most importantly... have fun. If you have any questions don't hesitate to send me a PM.

With a smirk on her face, Sierra glanced up at the latecomer. Thank you, Ravenclaw, for your contribution to the snakes winning back the house cup. It was always nice to see someone waltz into class late. Well, except when it was someone from Slytherin house. The lesson was moving on, though, so Sierra turned her attention back to Bentley.
Dear Merlin! They were worried about the dental hygiene of flesh-eating plants?! She personally thought they should be more worried about pulling the teeth out those plants, but no one had asked her. "Well, I guess they'd use their teeth for pretty much the same reasons we do," she said, raising her hand. "Even though they're plants, they still have to bite, pull apart food..."Or flesh."...and chew. They can't really do any of those things if their teeth are decaying."
Flesh eating plants? FLESH EATING PLANTS? Mika suddenly had the feeling that this Professor was completely INSANE. Why not start with something light, fluffy, and moderately lethal not the whole banquet of positively DEADLY!
The bouncy, excitable Ravenclaw was no longer bouncy or excitable. Her eyes had grown to the size of saucers and it looked like they were going to take flight out off their sockets. Yes. She felt like she was in an alien planet at the moment.
Heart beating she opened her mouth to speak and couldn't. "They n-n-n-n-need teeth t-tuh-to e-eat f-flesh with...so c-cleaning them means they won't l-loose their teeth...so they can keep eating our flesh....b-basically s-so they d-don't r-rot out" She paused before saying aloud "Professor they aren't going to eat our flesh will they?"

Dental hygiene in plants??? Now that was one thing his mum hadn't talked to him about! Seriously, he reallllly hoped they weren't going to learn how to brush a plants teeth properly. Now that would be just plain weird!!! Ok, hmmm what could dental hygiene help plants with. Why would they need to have teeth in the first place. Well, the obvious answer would be to take bites from whatever it was it was eating. But what else...
Raising his hand he waited to be called on "Maybe to call their food to them by whistling pretty music? If there's food in their teeth it wouldn't sound right when whistling."

Uh… what? Dental hygiene for plants? Flesh eating plants? Why would you want to take care of flesh eating plants (well, beyond a fly trap, of course)? "Um… professor, no offense, but wouldn't it really make more sense to let a flesh eating plant die?" Emmanuelle asked apprehensively. You know, so that you weren't having to constantly watch your back.

Flesh eating plants? This had suddenly sparked Hannah's attention. She let the question roll over in her mind for a bit before she answered. I mean the question seemed straight forward enough, but maybe the professor was looking for an answer that wasn't quite so obvious?
What ever the case...she decided to put her two cents in. With a raised hand she said "Professor they need their teeth to be strong because without them they couldn't eat and could not survive." I mean sure maybe somebody could feed them, but who was going to get in line for that job?

Harvey put up his hand "I think dental care is important to keep their teethn healthy and strong so that they have healthy teeth to be able to bite onto anything.. and thats where strength comes in as well.. just in case strong teeth are needed to bite into something" he answered as he wrote some of the other answers down.

FLESH EATING PLANTS!!
Sophie's eyes wiiiiidened when professor Bentley said those words. She didn't know if she was excited about that or scared. Well, if they were little flesh eating plants, like the ones she had seen before, that would be alright. But she had heard of some other kind of flesh eating plants that would be NO fun to play around with... But this was Hogwarts, so they were all safe, right?
Right... hopefully.
Teeth? Was she talking about those thingies around the... plant's thing? Sophie hesitated before raising her hand. "Um, by 'teeth' you mean those... pointy thingies around the 'head' - or whatever that's called - of the plant, professor?" She said, frowning a liiittle bit while thinking. "I think that's to keep the food inside while the digest it, no? Like, so the insect or... whatever else... won't scape while it's still alive."
Plants needed dental hygiene? That wasn't something Silvia was aware of before, although she had heard of flesh-eating plants. Did they need regular teeth cleanings too?
She decided to try to answer the first part of the question, on why it was important that plants had proper dental care. Raising her hand, she said, "Um, well, people can get cavities and dangerous infections that can cause teeth loss if they don't take care of their teeth. So maybe it's the same for flesh-eating plants too?"

Why would a plant need teeth? TO EAT THEM!
Listening to what professor Bentley was saying, Nora started having doubts that they were in good hands, because she pretty much had an idea about what they were going to do during the class. Although she didn't really like the topic, she raised her hand to answer. "Well, as we need our teeth to chew, I can only guess that plants need them for the same reason." People also look funny without teeth, but Nora preferred a plant without any.

Zhenya giggled at Gary's response. 5 Apples? At least he had shared ONE with her... anyway. DENTAL HYGIENE? For plants? Was it madness? As she listened more to what Professor Bentley was saying she nodded, it did start making sense.
She raised her hand, not really sure where her answer would go, and said "Professor, I think like humans the flesh eating plants need to have good... dental hygiene otherwise their teeth will rot and then they could start to die, but also if the rotting produces an odor, the plant could become prey to another plant, or animals," she said. Well, she was sure if the plant started rotting and making a stench, she would stay well away. But she knew that when animals started to rot away the whatchamacallems started eating the body and putting it back into the ground. Was it the same? Or similar?

Dental hygiene? Kaiden knew there were flesh eating plants, but didn't know about hygiene for a plant. He could feel Mika getting nervous beside him. Nervous enough to stutter though? He elbowed her, trying to calm her just a bit. Then raising his hand, he said what was on his mind. "Well, venus fly traps are flesh eating, but I don't know if they actually use their teeth. Maybe to keep the flies in?"
"Now today's topic is dental hygiene." She paused to let this sink in. No doubt there would be some students that weren't yet familiar with flesh eating plants. ...dental hygiene? Louisa blinked. In Herbology? O. Kaaay. That wasn't promising at all though because the sixth year wanted to stay AWAY from all the plants that needed dental care. Even with a professional teacher at the ready at all times. No plant was going to chop her hair off with a permission from Bentley, were they?
Raising her hand rather disappointedly, "They need them sharp and functional to help their survival, self-defense against other rival plants or antagonists." Y'know, the main reason they were created for in the first place. "And for those who actually consume flesh.." because everyone knew there ARE ones like those, "..they're to help them chew." Eew.
Dental Hygiene? For plants? Oh yes, those flesh eating plants did have teeth. But really, did they too require dental hygiene like humans? Apparently..
Ira was about to raise her hand up to answer, but many others had already answered before her. So why say the same things over and over again? Teeth rotting, strong self defense, bad odor, etc etc... all had already been answered. And Ira had nothing new to say. So she just sat there quietly, wating for the lesson to proceed..

West was going to either pass out or climb the walls in excitement. Eventually. For now he shot his hand up. One. And then the other. And then back to the one. He sat on his second had so that it wouldn't shoot up again too.
"Maybe they need their teeth for... for territorial displays! Like then they can go RAWR THATS MY CENTAUR, NO that's MY Centaur! Oh your teeth are BIG AND SHINY, I guess it IS your CENTAUR." Pause. "If they eat Centaurs that is. I don't know if they do." He was about to lower his hand when he realised he wasn't done yet and stretched it up higher. "So do they use like natural stuff? Like chewing on a bit of bark or something? Or at least something like that before wizards were around to help? Maybe trees what eat flesh would laugh at other flesh eating trees if their teeth were broken or uncool? I mean, MAYBE its a STATUS symbol in their treeish society!"
Okay. This time he put his hand down. And sat on that one too.
NOCLASSWOULDEVERBEATTHISONE, West was sure.

Ariana nearly covered her face with her hands upon seeing a Ravenclaw come in late. Not that she would hold anything against the poor girl, who was probably embarrassed enough already, but... now they were five points down. And officially losing the House Cup. After, like, one day. Sigh.

"Well..." Her hand in the air, Ariana answered the question, though she personally would have thought this rather obvious. "It's important for the same reasons that it's important to humans, basically so that their teeth stay in good shape and they can still eat." Duh. Oh well, she supposed she had read all of her textbooks beforehand, so maybe that put her a bit ahead? But honestly, easy question.
"They need their teeth for eating." A moment after giving this completely stupid answer, Ariana decided maybe she should elaborate somewhat... "Their diet can be somewhat determined by what their teeth are like, I think, for example a plant with really sharp teeth would be doing more tearing into flesh, while something with flatter teeth would do more grinding of... whatever it eats."
There, that seemed pretty satisfactory. With answers like that, hopefully she'd quickly help earn back the points that Kirie had lost.
Dental Hygiene? Really? She didn't know anything about dental hygiene and plants so this one would be a guess. A big guess. She didn't care if it was wrong though but only if they didn't lose any house points she didn't mind.
"The same reasons as humans? To eat, drink and chew." she didn't really know what to say because she had no idea but it was just a guess. Just a guess.

Alyssa listened as the other students gave their answers which were basically more or less the same as what she thought too, but she decided to give her answer anyway. So she raised her hand and answered.
"Professor, dental care is also important to flesh eating plants because their teeth is what is helping to keep them alive. Every plant has a way of protecting itself from their natural enemies and in the case of the flesh eating plants, it's their teeth. Besides using their teeth to chew their food, they also use it to bite their enemies as a way of protecting themselves. If their teeth rotted away and all they had left were their gums, they would be easy prey for any Herbivore or Omnivore to eat them because they wouldn't be able to protect themselves. Sure, without teeth, they might be able to survive on a liquid diet and even though that should still keep them alive, drinking food every day can end up being pretty boring after awhile." Alyssa said as she frowned thinking about that.
'No a liquid diet would definitely be no fun at all. Imagine no more eating chicken or burgers or hot dogs. That would definitely be a slow death for any flesh eating plant or human being.' Alyssa thought to herself.

Kurumi wiggled a little uncomfortably when the topic of flesh eating plants was mentioned. While it was true that the Gryffindor was a little nervous about the topic itself, it was more based on her knowing that she hadn't yet gone to visit Xavier in the greenhouses - the Bloody Red Rose that she ha saved after the snow dragon incident and had, in some weird way, adopted as a pet.
Kurumi had seen first hand on several occasions why he needed his teeth. Whether it was breaking down the meat she fed him to looking slightly menacing when she first entered and he thought he was being threatened. There were a lot of reasons that crossed her mind, but, again, Kurumi was distracted by so many thoughts - not all of them pertaining to Herbology, unfortunately - and missed out raising her hand before essentially the same things were said that she was thinking.
So, it was back to careful note taking for the prefect. Were they going to floss a plant today? If so...was she going to have to help demonstrate?

As John was paying attention, he got slightly distracted by the girl who entered the classroom late. He was glad she wasn't a Gryffindor, or else he would be pretty aggravated. He carefully listened to the next question, he again volunteered by raising his hand:
"They need their teeth to eat and to chew their food properly so they won't choke and die."
Kennedy jotted down some things that were said. Although he felt it was a waste of parchment because it should be protocol to know how to take care of oneself. Really. Who would forget to eat, or shower, or drink water? So, he stopped half way and decided to just listen.
His green eyes stopped on the girl that came in late and internally sighed in relief. She was in Ravenclaw. The prefect returned his attention back to the lovely Professor Bentley and raised his hand after she voiced her question. "They would need their teeth to defend themselves from predators," he said, then added, "and even to groom themselves?" Like cats, you know?

Jonathan listened to the professor as she started with her lecture. Everyone seemed to answer the same things. Bathing is probably one of the healthiest thing to do. Seriously, if one does not bathe it's disgusting. There are no other words to describe it. Bathing is very important and not just done every other day. NO, it has to be done every single day.
As the professor continued to talk, she suddenly had this word that seems really jibberish to him 'dental hygiene' what in Merlin's name is a dental? Muggle term perhaps, yes? Jonathan has never heard of the term, well he probably but dental... what is it?
Again, listening further to the professor, she seems to be linking it with teeth. So dental has something to do with.......... teeth? Odd way to describe such a thing. Teeth he can answer though. He raised his hand to answer "Teeth is an important part of the mouth. It's what we use to chew, and grind food. Making it into tiny particles before swallowing it." he said "That could be the same thing with flesh eating plants. They need teeth to crush, grind and chew food." because clearly, those sort of plants are not only scary but weird.

Brooke looked around a bit, listening to all these answeres being shouted out but now really taking on board what anyone was saying because she was too concerntrated on her own brtain and trying to form her own answer. After thinking up what she thought was a reasonable answer she popped up her hand in the air. "Umm. To eat ? if they haff unhealthy teeff then they wont be able to chew or wrip flesh off ?" wow. that sounded viscious, especially for a plant. And Brooke loved plants D:

Dental Hygeine? What was that supposed to mean? Then, Professor Bentley's next answer obviously answered her questions. Flesh eating plants? Jade's eyes grew bigger and she eyed all the plants that were in the greenhouse. Vicious plants that could eat her right up. She shivered and crossed her arms, scared.
So the questions then. "I assume the plants need dental care to have their teeth be strong," She shivered at the thought, "especially when they're doing their job of ripping at flesh."

Teeeth. What one earth did teeth have to do about herbology? The ravenclaw turned around in her chair a little, trying to find her brother to see his reaction. Indiana was pretty positive that her brother was not going to be happy that they were talking about stinking teeth. Mmm. After having a quick look she settled back facing the front, and thought about the question. It was kind of obvious really. Indy mused for a few seconds before she put her hand up. "When we don't look after our teeth we get tooth ache....and that really hurts." She decided with a little shudder. Indy did not like tooth ache at all. "So....plants must get the same if they don't have good dental hygiene. And thats not good because it makes you feel icky, and not want to eat. And if they don't eat them might die. And that would be so horrible and bad. Don't let the plants die Professor Bentley....even if they are flesh eating ones and sound really not very nice...." Indy trailed off, feeling that she was babbling just a little bit too much.
