Default Muggle Studies Lesson #3-Muggle Fairy Tales

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

On the door entering into the classroom is a copy of the invitation that was posted in each of the Common Rooms. This is posted as a reminder that you need to be in your pajamas for tonite's storytime lesson.

SPOILER!!: Lesson Invitation

When you walk into the Muggle Studies classroom, the smell of a campfire is floating in the air and the soft hum of crickets echoes in the distance. The classroom is still a classroom with four walls, but each wall has been draped with black material to give it an outdoor night time feeling. Every now and then a light breeze blows through the classroom just enough that you will want to sit close to the campfire and have a blanket to cover up with.

The only light in the room is from the real campfire crackling in the center of the room and from the ceiling which has been charmed to show the night sky full of stars and the bright moon much like in the Great Hall.

Around the campfire are logs laid out in a circular-ish pattern for the students to sit on. They have each been charmed to help make them comfy to sit on.

Against the back black wall is a table that is slightly lit by an old miner's lamp. This is a hot chocolate bar for the night's events. On the table are thermoses full of Muggle hot chocolate and mugs in a variety of colors for you to fill up from the thermoses. Feel free to top off your hot chocolate with any of the other items available for topping off your mug of hot chocolate. There is whipped cream in a can, cinnamon sprinkles, big marshmallows, small marshmallows, sugar sprinkles, and peppermints.

SPOILER!!: Hot Chocolate Bar, ignore the Christmas Decorations...haha.

The professor can be found near the campfire in her favorite leopard pajamas and tiger feet slippers covered up with a warm and fluffy giraffe print blanket sipping out of a zebra mug filled hot chocolate topped with whipped cream and cinnamon. Beside her sits a few books, a picnic basket, and a pile of blankets. Feel free to ask her to borrow a blanket if you forgot yours. O and her favorite stuffed animal, Punchers, is sitting in her lap.

Please help yourself to the goodies and drinks and have a seat. Get comfy and feel free to talk among yourself until the class starts.

OOC: Please sit down and grab something to drink. If you need a blanket, feel free to ask the Professor to borrow one. The class will officially start later tomorrow morning sometime. Thanks!

Following the Professor's instruction to wait for your turn in toasting your marshmallows, Erin stood up and waited on line. And when it was her turn, she quickly toasted hers and moved back to her seat. She was definitely coming back for more. This class was awesome. That was the reason, she wanted to enroll eventhough she was a Muggle.

She paid attention to the Disney montage Professor Cerulean showed them. Then she suddenly asked a question. Don't genies do the wishes, why fish? Though confused and somehow amused, Erin's hands shot up in the air, "I would wish for a simple life." Yes, that was she needed right now with all the complications of her real and adoptive parents. She needed an escape from all of them. She needed to breathe and just live life the way a normal girl would do. "...and the second would be..." she couldn't think of much and then this girl Beezus came up to her mind. Yeah, they did have a misunderstanding so, why would she be on her mind when she was actually wishing. Mentally kicking herself, Erin continued, "...that I won't freeze like the others and my friends too."

Noticing that it was her turn, Nora put her marshmallow on her stick and did as instructed, waiting until it got golden brown... although hers probably got burned a little, since this was the first time she was doing this. Ehh. She wouldn't eat it right away either... because she didn't want to risk burning her tongue.

Buuut back to the lesson. The girl listened to everything they've been told about the Grimm brothers, the ones she happened to hear about. Yuuup, they came up with some of the best muggle fairytales, or at least most of the muggle fairytales that Nora knew. But... what about the two wishes? What would SHE wish for? "I... I'd wish for the weird things to stop happening at Hogwarts," she said after raising her hand. Well, you know, like FREEZING students. "And maybe for longer holidays."

Yeah! Janice had been waiting for that moment, roasting marshmallows. She headed to the fire, roasted hers, and went back when her marshmallows are golden brown and Professor gave out another question.

"I would ask for money so my mom could continue with her research and so that my cousin can have funds for the next community play." That is still counted as one, right? "And I also want an unlimited supply of West End tickets so everybody can watch quality plays and musicals. Together," she added with a smile.

Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.

It didn't take long after Professor Cerulean asked this question for Oakey's hand to shoot up straight in the air! I wold wish for no more bad luck! He blurted out! I also wish Harvey never had that stupid Quidditch accident!

Wait, a Magical-wish granting fish, that sounded suspicious! He realized it was just a a hypothetical fish but he had to make sure that his wishes wouldn't back fire on him. In one of those Be careful what you wish for situations. Professor, can this fish be trusted? I'd rather take my wishes from a Genie. Plus I'd get one more wish! Right, so what would that be? My third wish would be... to find out who spilled his secret to Laura...No, not that. He could do that on his own, cue sour lemon glare at Ella...to meet my muggle parents. That was a lie. He didn't really care to meet his muggle parents. They probably didn't want to meet him.

Nigel agreed with Oakey. Why could it not be a Genie? Then he could have gotten three wishes and not just two. But oh well, He already knew one of his wishes. It was pretty obvious since she did not say we could't. "He raised his hand and said

"Professor, first i would wish for unlimited wishes and then i would wish to be able to master any skill within 1 month."

Nigel knew you had to be smart with your wishes or you will be double crossed in the end. Plus if you wish for unlimited wishes you can keep on wishing.

Default Catching up! Sorta.
Arts TRANSPONSTER!

As the video of that Star Wars film was shown to them, a smile spread across Sophie's face. She really liked those neon thingies! And the sound they made was also pretty cool! She wondered if she could do something similiar with her wand... maybe a continuous beam of light, along with some won-won-won noises. She would have to find out later!

Since Blue answered the question about protagosnist and antagonist using Rapuznel as her example, Sophie just smiled at her little friend and nodded.

Time to make the smores! As Ella motioned to her and Mordred to follow her, Sophie got up and got closer to the fire, putting the marshmallow on the stick. Heeeeeeh! This was cool! Sophie turned her marshmallow at the same time Ella did and smiled at her friend. When it was golden brown, she went back to the logs and made the little sandwich with the crackers and used the chocolate piece as the... cheese of the sandwich. Hehe! Yum! This really looked perfect!

And now... oooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! They were watching a collection of Disney classics! Sophie loved thooose!! Seh even used to sing along when she was a little kid. She actually hummed along as the video played. Aaww! Now she really felt like watching everything all over again!

Interesting information about the Brothers Grimm! Sophie's dad had told her about those facts before. She had never read or heard about the original versions of the tales though. Her dad thought it was better if she stuck with the Disney ones for now. She wouldn't go against her dad's word, now would she?

Professor... - she really needed to find out her name! - the professor asked another question. Two wishes? Hmmm... she glanced around as the others started speaking up. Wishes wishes... She raised her hand. "Yeah, bring back those who have been frozen would be my first one." And the second... HEH. She would look over to Mordred gorgeous hair right now and say she wished to touch it, because it looked SO smooth and nice! But... people didn't need to know that. Sophie just grinned at the thought of her second wish. But OH! She had to say something eeelse! "Um... my second wish would be... that I could be the Charms Queen faster!" Sounded legit. She was working to be the Charms Queen, but if she could just wish to know all the spells that existed and be really good at all of them, it would be much simpler and faster!

Who Am I? Ern's 2460FUN

Selina's mouth was preoccupied with the gooey marshmallow that had since taken up residency in her mouth when Cerulean asked her next question. She was about to giggle at the idea of a fairy godmother fish when the question sunk in- if she could have two wishes what would they be? The redhead did not have to think long and hard about the answer to this question. It was something that she secretly wished for herself all the time. As the levity of the question sunk in further, she put down her s'more, she wasn't hungry anymore.

Although the idea of a wish granting fish was foolish at best, the idea of two wishes, to re-dos was very heavy. In all honesty, if she could wish for two things it would be to rid herself of her ability so she never have to be burdened with everyone's futures and she would wish to bring Danny back. People in stories always said bringing back the dead was a tricky and unearthly thing, but loosing someone special made that fact not matter. To have her sister again would have been a dream come true. That was what she would ask for.

Yet, no one really knew Selina's secret besides a few choice people and one of them was up frozen in a hospital bed at the moment. Then Selina remembered the people in the wing. She knew if Kurumi were there at that moment she would have silently wished for her mother to return. The sixth year female prefect understood loss just like Selina. She missed her best friend. But she was big about to admit that she was a seer and the her sister had passed away. They were her secrets to keep. So instead... She lied, "I would wish for everyone in the hospital wing to be unfrozen," which was something that Selina did genuinely hope would happen soon, "and I would wish for a portkey to go and visit my family within school walls." Lies. That wasn't what she wished at all...

Jory waited until it was his turn to toast his marshmallow. When it was, he just let it be over the fire briefly before returning to his seat.

He thought of the question and had no trouble coming up with his first wish. He raised his hand. "I'd first wish everyone would live in harmony,'' he said and paused to think about the other. "And then I'd probably wish I was better at Arithmancy.'' Yup, Jory was almost always lost in Arithmancy.

Chelle did not put her marshmallows in the fire. Nope. She'd had enough of marshmallows. She didn't like sweet things and candies. Not anymore, anyway. It had been ages since she'd even tasted chocolate.

The Brothers Grimm?

Why, of course Chelle had heard of them. She loved their tales. She'd always been very fascinated by the fact that the same story could be spun into two different kinds of versions. Yup. She liked the fact that their stories were more realistic. Although no fairytale could ever be realistic.

She liked Professor's new question. She liked it a lot. It made her think. She had often thought about what she would wish for if a Genie came and granted her any three wishes. Since she had to name any two, that was quite an easy job.

"Professor, I would first and foremost wish for the ability to turn invisible," she said. It had always been one of her deep desires. "Then I'd wish for my best friend to always be with me." She sighed. She missed Jake so much. Why did he have to be a Muggle? Why did he have to be back in London, while she was here?

She also had a third wish. It was probably something that she wanted more than the other two. But she didn't say it out loud. I wish my father were still here, and I wish my mother would stop behaving like a living corpse.

So it was her turn to toast the marshmallows. Um...yummy.

Tiffany sat by the fireplace and toasted it. It smelled great. She used to eat like that way when she was young since her mother was a muggle. She turned the marshmallows around and around so that it wouldn't be burnt, then it was not yummy anymore. After doing so, she went back to her seat.

And now, thinking of the wishes that the professor asked them about, Tiffany could hardly think of some. She didn't really have anything that she wanted to happen or not to. "Well...my first wish would be...I wish I could do better in those subjects that I am weak in,"she replied."As for the second wish...I wish I could have another wishes."She chuckled. That was how people usually said when asking about their wishes.

This sort of thing reminded her of the story of the three brothers in the Tales of the beedle and the bard. "I wish to be happy with whatever I have and to have a good eye", Sarah said upon raising her hand. A good eye was essential for happiness. She would also want to be as wise as King Solomon...

Sarah prepared her smore and ate it... yum

Theodore hushed up when the professor joined in his and Oakey's little argument. But she was AWESOME for reading comics. Yea, the prof was now on his favourite teachers list.

He thought about his wishes carefully.

"I wish I could be a superhero, with every single superpower possible." He listened to a few people wishing for the unfrozen people to be cured. Pshht, "...and I could save all the frozen lot with my powers." Oh yeah. Theo the hero. Everybody bow down.

"I also wish for a chocolate frog, that grows back after I've eaten it." Cos he wasted A LOT of money on chocolate frogs.

Perfect wishes.

Anyway... Marshmallow tiiiiiime. Theo popped his marshmallow on the stick and gently held it over the fire. It toasted quickly and it put it straight in his mouth, making a slight squeal at the heat.

Laura looked at the Professor and raised her hands. "Well one of my wishes would be for a copy of the next 50 years sporting results." Laura smiled she could then become one of the luckiest witches in the world be predicting the correct score for people. "And my second would be for the fish to allow me an extra 500 wishes." Laura giggled was that allowed or did she have to think of something else, why didn't people think about asking that when they meet something like this.

Protagonists and Antagonists, Ness knew all about this. She had rememebred learning it once. It was pretty simple and easy to understand, but then nothing in Muggle Studdies was ever too difficult to her. The red head raised her hand politey deciding to be a little more involved in the class then she usually was. "Well, Professor in Thumbelina she is the protagonist and so it the fairy prince and then as she goes on all her adventures we hear about all the antagonists which includes, the toad and the mole." Once finished talking, Nessie listened to the others and even took down some notes.

She turned back to the screen and tapped it three times. It cleared and then went blank. "Now many of you are familiar with fairy tales as they have been told in mainstream. Here is a quick video of all of the fairy tales that we recreated through a Muggle Movie company called Disney." she flicked the screen and short movie played.

~*Click HERE to watch a cool montage of all of the Disney Princesses, that I found on YouTube*~

After the short clip finished playing, she continued, "All of the movies created by Disney and other movie companies put a very whimsical and cheerful spin to fairy tales. All fairy tales had a beginning and not all of them were all goodness and light." she flicked the board and two pictures appeared.

"These men are known as the Brothers Grimm. Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm were German brothers who compiled a collection of ancient folk tales known as Grimm's Fairytales in the late 1700s and early 1800s. They were librarians, professors, scholars who studied classical literature, and folklorists. In 1805 Jacob traveled to Paris, France, to conduct research on Roman law and found a German manuscript of old stories."

She paused to make sure everyone was sinking in what she was saying, "Jacob vowed to keep the stories alive and decided to embark with his brother on a trip through Germany to collect other folk tales before the tales died out. The Grimms were especially interested in children's stories, which culminated in a book called Kinderhund Hausmarchen, which means Children's Household Tales or Grimm's Fairy Tales. This first publication, in 1812, was so well received that the brothers published several more volumes in 1815. Some of the more famous stories from these collections include "The History of Tom Thumb," "Little Red Riding Hood," "Puss in Boots," "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," "Cinderella," and "The Princess and the Pea." she said reaching over to her shelf and pulling out a copy of the book. It was a huge heavy old book.

"Their versions were more lifelike and not so sugar coated as many of the stories we have heard over the years." she paused and watched the student toasting their marshmallows.

"So my next question, let's imagine we lived inside a fairy tale and in this fairy tale you met a fish that granted wishes and he gave you two wishes...what would your two wishes be?" she asked...yes this didn't have anything completely to with the Brother's Grimm but she couldn't really ask them a question about the Brothers when many had just be introduced to them.

OOC: Feel free to catch up with the lesson at any point by putting Catching Up in the title of your post.

This whole thing about the Grimm Brothers was rather interesting to Ness, especially the fact that they wrote really famous fairtytales such as Snow White and Cinderella. She had never heard of them before, yet they should have been well known if they had written those stories.

As the marshmellows came around, Nessie grabbed one and placed it on a stick. She then positioned the marshmellow and stick near the fire so it could warm up and get all crispy. Whilst waiting she began to think of an answer to the next question.

Two wishes and what would you wish for? Hmmm, the red heads lips at once formed their thinking pout. Well if there was one thing Ness really wanted, it must have been to be happy forever, or maybe peace in the world. Those seemed like good things. Or another good idea would be to wish for infinity wishes, but most of the time that wasn't allowed.

Seeing her marshmellow go a browny gold color, she moved it away from the fire and took a small bite. It tasted nice and it made her grin. Teh fourth year raised her hand once she had come to a conclusion with her ideas of wishes. "What I would do is wish for infinity wishes, but if the fish won't allow that, then I'd probably just wish for.." she took another quick bite from her marshmellow. "..I'd wish for happiness and maybe world peace too." she said finishing off her answer.

Seemed like they were pretty fair and reasonable wishes, right?

Roasting marshmallows! No lie she was actually enjoying this activity. The smell was heavenly! Hannah stuck her marshmallow on a stick and hovered it over the fire. Hannah liked hers a little bit burnt. That made it not so sweet and balanced it out in her opinion.

Then the professor asked what two wishes they would wish for? An evil grin played across her face as so many ideas passed through her mind. She was sure that she would get detention if she voiced any of her first ideas although she was sure there were several people that would agree with her that a school with no puffers would be awesome.

Ok focus Hannah...what would she want? She already has everything she needs and if she wanted anything else she would just simply ask her father for it and he would provide it. DUH!

Suddenly a conversation that she had with her friend Elliot came to her mind. "Professor I would wish to be the ruler of the world." When she was older of course...maybe! What else could she possibly want other than that? "For my second wish I would wish for my family to always have their wealth." They would obviously without her wish, but well she couldn't exactly say what else was going on in her mind.

She went back to her marshmallow and wondered if they could go ahead and eat it? It was looking mouthwatering!

The professor shook her head at each of the students as they shared their wishes. She kept her smile on her face but she figured she would share her two wishes as well, "Well, I would wish for us to be able to locate my younger brother whom has been missing for quite a few years....." she said this with a very straight face..."and I would wish for a neverending supply of licorice wands..." the last one she said with an excitement...o how she loved licorice wands!

She tapped on the screen again and a new video loaded up and began to play.

"Some of you may have seen this version of Cinderella created by the Disney company in the 1950s that I mentioned earlier....but even if you haven't, I'm sure you're familiar with the story of Cinderella." she paused as she looked around at the students making smores still. "In this version, Cinderella is about a young woman that lives with her step mother and step sisters. They don't treat her very well and make her do all of the chores even though she is of noble blood. But when Cinderella's cruel stepmother prevents her from attending the Royal Ball, she gets some unexpected help from the lovable mice Gus and Jaq, and from her Fairy Godmother. She has until midnight and then magic wears off." she smiled and then continued.

"This is a little bit different magic than what we use, but magic nonetheless. The prince falls in love with her during the ball and as Cinderella is running off at midnight she leaves a glass slipper and he must look all over the kingdom looking for the foot that fits into the shoe. He finds her and lives happily ever after..." she said it all in excitement but then her face became normal again.

"As you tell just from the summary...it isn't a completely rational story and it is based on love prevailing over everything...now since we understand magic we know that some of the things that happen in this version are possible...For instance, the Fairy Godmother transforms the mice into her stable boys for the night and a pumpkin into a carriage etc. That can be done using a variety of transfiguration spells, but in the Muggle world this is just a fantasy or fairy tale..." she said with a final nod up and down.

She opened up the big book that she had taken off of the shelf and opened it to a story entitled, The Little Cinder Girl. "The true or researched version is similar to the Disney Sugar Coated version but it's more realistic. Now this version of the book is in German and so I don't completely know what all is says" she said with a little wink.."But, I do know what the gist of the story is in English." She then shared a version of the story with the students.

Cinderella
Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm

A rich man's wife became sick, and when she felt that her end was drawing near, she called her only daughter to her bedside and said, "Dear child, remain pious and good, and then our dear God will always protect you, and I will look down on you from heaven and be near you." With this she closed her eyes and died.

The girl went out to her mother's grave every day and wept, and she remained pious and good. When winter came the snow spread a white cloth over the grave, and when the spring sun had removed it again, the man took himself another wife.

This wife brought two daughters into the house with her. They were beautiful, with fair faces, but evil and dark hearts. Times soon grew very bad for the poor stepchild.

"Why should that stupid goose sit in the parlor with us?" they said. "If she wants to eat bread, then she will have to earn it. Out with this kitchen maid!"

They took her beautiful clothes away from her, dressed her in an old gray smock, and gave her wooden shoes. "Just look at the proud princess! How decked out she is!" they shouted and laughed as they led her into the kitchen.

There she had to do hard work from morning until evening, get up before daybreak, carry water, make the fires, cook, and wash. Besides this, the sisters did everything imaginable to hurt her. They made fun of her, scattered peas and lentils into the ashes for her, so that she had to sit and pick them out again. In the evening when she had worked herself weary, there was no bed for her. Instead she had to sleep by the hearth in the ashes. And because she always looked dusty and dirty, they called her Cinderella.

One day it happened that the father was going to the fair, and he asked his two stepdaughters what he should bring back for them.

"Beautiful dresses," said the one.

"Pearls and jewels," said the other.

"And you, Cinderella," he said, "what do you want?"

"Father, break off for me the first twig that brushes against your hat on your way home."

So he bought beautiful dresses, pearls, and jewels for his two stepdaughters. On his way home, as he was riding through a green thicket, a hazel twig brushed against him and knocked off his hat. Then he broke off the twig and took it with him. Arriving home, he gave his stepdaughters the things that they had asked for, and he gave Cinderella the twig from the hazel bush.

Cinderella thanked him, went to her mother's grave, and planted the branch on it, and she wept so much that her tears fell upon it and watered it. It grew and became a beautiful tree.

Cinderella went to this tree three times every day, and beneath it she wept and prayed. A white bird came to the tree every time, and whenever she expressed a wish, the bird would throw down to her what she had wished for.

Now it happened that the king proclaimed a festival that was to last three days. All the beautiful young girls in the land were invited, so that his son could select a bride for himself. When the two stepsisters heard that they too had been invited, they were in high spirits.

They called Cinderella, saying, "Comb our hair for us. Brush our shoes and fasten our buckles. We are going to the festival at the king's castle."

Cinderella obeyed, but wept, because she too would have liked to go to the dance with them. She begged her stepmother to allow her to go.

"You, Cinderella?" she said. "You, all covered with dust and dirt, and you want to go to the festival?. You have neither clothes nor shoes, and yet you want to dance!"

However, because Cinderella kept asking, the stepmother finally said, "I have scattered a bowl of lentils into the ashes for you. If you can pick them out again in two hours, then you may go with us."

The girl went through the back door into the garden, and called out, "You tame pigeons, you turtledoves, and all you birds beneath the sky, come and help me to gather:

The good ones go into the pot,
The bad ones go into your crop."

Two white pigeons came in through the kitchen window, and then the turtledoves, and finally all the birds beneath the sky came whirring and swarming in, and lit around the ashes. The pigeons nodded their heads and began to pick, pick, pick, pick. And the others also began to pick, pick, pick, pick. They gathered all the good grains into the bowl. Hardly one hour had passed before they were finished, and they all flew out again.

The girl took the bowl to her stepmother, and was happy, thinking that now she would be allowed to go to the festival with them.

But the stepmother said, "No, Cinderella, you have no clothes, and you don't know how to dance. Everyone would only laugh at you."

Cinderella began to cry, and then the stepmother said, "You may go if you are able to pick two bowls of lentils out of the ashes for me in one hour," thinking to herself, "She will never be able to do that."

They gathered all the good grains into the bowls. Before a half hour had passed they were finished, and they all flew out again.

The girl took the bowls to her stepmother, and was happy, thinking that now she would be allowed to go to the festival with them.

But the stepmother said, "It's no use. You are not coming with us, for you have no clothes, and you don't know how to dance. We would be ashamed of you." With this she turned her back on Cinderella, and hurried away with her two proud daughters.

Now that no one else was at home, Cinderella went to her mother's grave beneath the hazel tree, and cried out:

Shake and quiver, little tree,
Throw gold and silver down to me.

Then the bird threw a gold and silver dress down to her, and slippers embroidered with silk and silver. She quickly put on the dress and went to the festival.

Her stepsisters and her stepmother did not recognize her. They thought she must be a foreign princess, for she looked so beautiful in the golden dress. They never once thought it was Cinderella, for they thought that she was sitting at home in the dirt, looking for lentils in the ashes.

The prince approached her, took her by the hand, and danced with her. Furthermore, he would dance with no one else. He never let go of her hand, and whenever anyone else came and asked her to dance, he would say, "She is my dance partner."

She danced until evening, and then she wanted to go home. But the prince said, "I will go along and escort you," for he wanted to see to whom the beautiful girl belonged. However, she eluded him and jumped into the pigeon coop. The prince waited until her father came, and then he told him that the unknown girl had jumped into the pigeon coop.

The old man thought, "Could it be Cinderella?"

He had them bring him an ax and a pick so that he could break the pigeon coop apart, but no one was inside. When they got home Cinderella was lying in the ashes, dressed in her dirty clothes. A dim little oil-lamp was burning in the fireplace. Cinderella had quickly jumped down from the back of the pigeon coop and had run to the hazel tree. There she had taken off her beautiful clothes and laid them on the grave, and the bird had taken them away again. Then, dressed in her gray smock, she had returned to the ashes in the kitchen.

The next day when the festival began anew, and her parents and her stepsisters had gone again, Cinderella went to the hazel tree and said:

Shake and quiver, little tree,
Throw gold and silver down to me.

Then the bird threw down an even more magnificent dress than on the preceding day. When Cinderella appeared at the festival in this dress, everyone was astonished at her beauty. The prince had waited until she came, then immediately took her by the hand, and danced only with her. When others came and asked her to dance with them, he said, "She is my dance partner."

When evening came she wanted to leave, and the prince followed her, wanting to see into which house she went. But she ran away from him and into the garden behind the house. A beautiful tall tree stood there, on which hung the most magnificent pears. She climbed as nimbly as a squirrel into the branches, and the prince did not know where she had gone. He waited until her father came, then said to him, "The unknown girl has eluded me, and I believe she has climbed up the pear tree.

The father thought, "Could it be Cinderella?" He had an ax brought to him and cut down the tree, but no one was in it. When they came to the kitchen, Cinderella was lying there in the ashes as usual, for she had jumped down from the other side of the tree, had taken the beautiful dress back to the bird in the hazel tree, and had put on her gray smock.

On the third day, when her parents and sisters had gone away, Cinderella went again to her mother's grave and said to the tree:

Shake and quiver, little tree,
Throw gold and silver down to me.

This time the bird threw down to her a dress that was more splendid and magnificent than any she had yet had, and the slippers were of pure gold. When she arrived at the festival in this dress, everyone was so astonished that they did not know what to say. The prince danced only with her, and whenever anyone else asked her to dance, he would say, "She is my dance partner."

When evening came Cinderella wanted to leave, and the prince tried to escort her, but she ran away from him so quickly that he could not follow her. The prince, however, had set a trap. He had had the entire stairway smeared with pitch. When she ran down the stairs, her left slipper stuck in the pitch. The prince picked it up. It was small and dainty, and of pure gold.

The next morning, he went with it to the man, and said to him, "No one shall be my wife except for the one whose foot fits this golden shoe."

The two sisters were happy to hear this, for they had pretty feet. With her mother standing by, the older one took the shoe into her bedroom to try it on. She could not get her big toe into it, for the shoe was too small for her. Then her mother gave her a knife and said, "Cut off your toe. When you are queen you will no longer have to go on foot."

The girl cut off her toe, forced her foot into the shoe, swallowed the pain, and went out to the prince. He took her on his horse as his bride and rode away with her. However, they had to ride past the grave, and there, on the hazel tree, sat the two pigeons, crying out:

Rook di goo, rook di goo!
There's blood in the shoe.
The shoe is too tight,
This bride is not right!

Then he looked at her foot and saw how the blood was running from it. He turned his horse around and took the false bride home again, saying that she was not the right one, and that the other sister should try on the shoe. She went into her bedroom, and got her toes into the shoe all right, but her heel was too large.

Then her mother gave her a knife, and said, "Cut a piece off your heel. When you are queen you will no longer have to go on foot."

The girl cut a piece off her heel, forced her foot into the shoe, swallowed the pain, and went out to the prince. He took her on his horse as his bride and rode away with her. When they passed the hazel tree, the two pigeons were sitting in it, and they cried out:

Rook di goo, rook di goo!
There's blood in the shoe.
The shoe is too tight,
This bride is not right!

He looked down at her foot and saw how the blood was running out of her shoe, and how it had stained her white stocking all red. Then he turned his horse around and took the false bride home again.

"This is not the right one, either," he said. "Don't you have another daughter?"

"No," said the man. "There is only a deformed little Cinderella from my first wife, but she cannot possibly be the bride."

The prince told him to send her to him, but the mother answered, "Oh, no, she is much too dirty. She cannot be seen."

But the prince insisted on it, and they had to call Cinderella. She first washed her hands and face clean, and then went and bowed down before the prince, who gave her the golden shoe. She sat down on a stool, pulled her foot out of the heavy wooden shoe, and put it into the slipper, and it fitted her perfectly.

When she stood up the prince looked into her face, and he recognized the beautiful girl who had danced with him. He cried out, "She is my true bride."

The stepmother and the two sisters were horrified and turned pale with anger. The prince, however, took Cinderella onto his horse and rode away with her. As they passed by the hazel tree, the two white pigeons cried out:

Rook di goo, rook di goo!
No blood's in the shoe.
The shoe's not too tight,
This bride is right!

After they had cried this out, they both flew down and lit on Cinderella's shoulders, one on the right, the other on the left, and remained sitting there.

When the wedding with the prince was to be held, the two false sisters came, wanting to gain favor with Cinderella and to share her good fortune. When the bridal couple walked into the church, the older sister walked on their right side and the younger on their left side, and the pigeons pecked out one eye from each of them. Afterwards, as they came out of the church, the older one was on the left side, and the younger one on the right side, and then the pigeons pecked out the other eye from each of them. And thus, for their wickedness and falsehood, they were punished with blindness as long as they lived.

Cinderella

The Brothers Grimm

translated by Margaret Taylor (1884)

The wife of a rich man fell sick, and as she felt that her end was drawing near, she called her only daughter to her bedside and said, "Dear child, be good and pious, and then the good God will always protect thee, and I will look down on thee from heaven and be near thee." Thereupon she closed her eyes and departed. Every day the maiden went out to her mother's grave, and wept, and she remained pious and good. When winter came the snow spread a white sheet over the grave, and when the spring sun had drawn it off again, the man had taken another wife.

The woman had brought two daughters into the house with her, who were beautiful and fair of face, but vile and black of heart. Now began a bad time for the poor step-child. "Is the stupid goose to sit in the parlour with us?" said they. "He who wants to eat bread must earn it; out with the kitchen-wench." They took her pretty clothes away from her, put an old grey bedgown on her, and gave her wooden shoes. "Just look at the proud princess, how decked out she is!" they cried, and laughed, and led her into the kitchen. There she had to do hard work from morning till night, get up before daybreak, carry water, light fires, cook and wash. Besides this, the sisters did her every imaginable injury -- they mocked her and emptied her peas and lentils into the ashes, so that she was forced to sit and pick them out again. In the evening when she had worked till she was weary she had no bed to go to, but had to sleep by the fireside in the ashes. And as on that account she always looked dusty and dirty, they called her Cinderella. It happened that the father was once going to the fair, and he asked his two step-daughters what he should bring back for them. "Beautiful dresses," said one, "Pearls and jewels," said the second. "And thou, Cinderella," said he, "what wilt thou have?" "Father, break off for me the first branch which knocks against your hat on your way home." So he bought beautiful dresses, pearls and jewels for his two step-daughters, and on his way home, as he was riding through a green thicket, a hazel twig brushed against him and knocked off his hat. Then he broke off the branch and took it with him. When he reached home he gave his step-daughters the things which they had wished for, and to Cinderella he gave the branch from the hazel-bush. Cinderella thanked him, went to her mother's grave and planted the branch on it, and wept so much that the tears fell down on it and watered it. And it grew, however, and became a handsome tree. Thrice a day Cinderella went and sat beneath it, and wept and prayed, and a little white bird always came on the tree, and if Cinderella expressed a wish, the bird threw down to her what she had wished for.

It happened, however, that the King appointed a festival which was to last three days, and to which all the beautiful young girls in the country were invited, in order that his son might choose himself a bride. When the two step-sisters heard that they too were to appear among the number, they were delighted, called Cinderella and said, "Comb our hair for us, brush our shoes and fasten our buckles, for we are going to the festival at the King's palace." Cinderella obeyed, but wept, because she too would have liked to go with them to the dance, and begged her step-mother to allow her to do so. "Thou go, Cinderella!" said she; "Thou art dusty and dirty and wouldst go to the festival? Thou hast no clothes and shoes, and yet wouldst dance!" As, however, Cinderella went on asking, the step-mother at last said, "I have emptied a dish of lentils into the ashes for thee, if thou hast picked them out again in two hours, thou shalt go with us." The maiden went through the back-door into the garden, and called, "You tame pigeons, you turtle-doves, and all you birds beneath the sky, come and help me to pick

"The good into the pot,
The bad into the crop."

Then two white pigeons came in by the kitchen-window, and afterwards the turtle-doves, and at last all the birds beneath the sky, came whirring and crowding in, and alighted amongst the ashes. And the pigeons nodded with their heads and began pick, pick, pick, pick, and the rest began also pick, pick, pick, pick, and gathered all the good grains into the dish. Hardly had one hour passed before they had finished, and all flew out again. Then the girl took the dish to her step-mother, and was glad, and believed that now she would be allowed to go with them to the festival. But the step-mother said, "No, Cinderella, thou hast no clothes and thou canst not dance; thou wouldst only be laughed at." And as Cinderella wept at this, the step-mother said, "If thou canst pick two dishes of lentils out of the ashes for me in one hour, thou shalt go with us." And she thought to herself, "That she most certainly cannot do." When the step-mother had emptied the two dishes of lentils amongst the ashes, the maiden went through the back-door into the garden and cried, You tame pigeons, you turtle-doves, and all you birds under heaven, come and help me to pick

"The good into the pot,
The bad into the crop."

Then two white pigeons came in by the kitchen-window, and afterwards the turtle-doves, and at length all the birds beneath the sky, came whirring and crowding in, and alighted amongst the ashes. And the doves nodded with their heads and began pick, pick, pick, pick, and the others began also pick, pick, pick, pick, and gathered all the good seeds into the dishes, and before half an hour was over they had already finished, and all flew out again. Then the maiden carried the dishes to the step-mother and was delighted, and believed that she might now go with them to the festival. But the step-mother said, "All this will not help thee; thou goest not with us, for thou hast no clothes and canst not dance; we should be ashamed of thee!" On this she turned her back on Cinderella, and hurried away with her two proud daughters.

As no one was now at home, Cinderella went to her mother's grave beneath the hazel-tree, and cried,

"Shiver and quiver, little tree,
Silver and gold throw down over me."

Then the bird threw a gold and silver dress down to her, and slippers embroidered with silk and silver. She put on the dress with all speed, and went to the festival. Her step-sisters and the step-mother however did not know her, and thought she must be a foreign princess, for she looked so beautiful in the golden dress. They never once thought of Cinderella, and believed that she was sitting at home in the dirt, picking lentils out of the ashes. The prince went to meet her, took her by the hand and danced with her. He would dance with no other maiden, and never left loose of her hand, and if any one else came to invite her, he said, "This is my partner."

She danced till it was evening, and then she wanted to go home. But the King's son said, "I will go with thee and bear thee company," for he wished to see to whom the beautiful maiden belonged. She escaped from him, however, and sprang into the pigeon-house. The King's son waited until her father came, and then he told him that the stranger maiden had leapt into the pigeon-house. The old man thought, "Can it be Cinderella?" and they had to bring him an axe and a pickaxe that he might hew the pigeon-house to pieces, but no one was inside it. And when they got home Cinderella lay in her dirty clothes among the ashes, and a dim little oil-lamp was burning on the mantle-piece, for Cinderella had jumped quickly down from the back of the pigeon-house and had run to the little hazel-tree, and there she had taken off her beautiful clothes and laid them on the grave, and the bird had taken them away again, and then she had placed herself in the kitchen amongst the ashes in her grey gown.

Next day when the festival began afresh, and her parents and the step-sisters had gone once more, Cinderella went to the hazel-tree and said --

"Shiver and quiver, my little tree,
Silver and gold throw down over me."

Then the bird threw down a much more beautiful dress than on the preceding day. And when Cinderella appeared at the festival in this dress, every one was astonished at her beauty. The King's son had waited until she came, and instantly took her by the hand and danced with no one but her. When others came and invited her, he said, "She is my partner." When evening came she wished to leave, and the King's son followed her and wanted to see into which house she went. But she sprang away from him, and into the garden behind the house. Therein stood a beautiful tall tree on which hung the most magnificent pears. She clambered so nimbly between the branches like a squirrel that the King's son did not know where she was gone. He waited until her father came, and said to him, "The stranger-maiden has escaped from me, and I believe she has climbed up the pear-tree." The father thought, "Can it be Cinderella?" and had an axe brought and cut the tree down, but no one was on it. And when they got into the kitchen, Cinderella lay there amongst the ashes, as usual, for she had jumped down on the other side of the tree, had taken the beautiful dress to the bird on the little hazel-tree, and put on her grey gown.

On the third day, when the parents and sisters had gone away, Cinderella went once more to her mother's grave and said to the little tree --

"Shiver and quiver, my little tree,
Silver and gold throw down over me."

And now the bird threw down to her a dress which was more splendid and magnificent than any she had yet had, and the slippers were golden. And when she went to the festival in the dress, no one knew how to speak for astonishment. The King's son danced with her only, and if any one invited her to dance, he said, "She is my partner."

When evening came, Cinderella wished to leave, and the King's son was anxious to go with her, but she escaped from him so quickly that he could not follow her. The King's son had, however, used a strategem, and had caused the whole staircase to be smeared with pitch, and there, when she ran down, had the maiden's left slipper remained sticking. The King's son picked it up, and it was small and dainty, and all golden. Next morning, he went with it to the father, and said to him, "No one shall be my wife but she whose foot this golden slipper fits." Then were the two sisters glad, for they had pretty feet. The eldest went with the shoe into her room and wanted to try it on, and her mother stood by. But she could not get her big toe into it, and the shoe was too small for her. Then her mother gave her a knife and said, "Cut the toe off; when thou art Queen thou wilt have no more need to go on foot." The maiden cut the toe off, forced the foot into the shoe, swallowed the pain, and went out to the King's son. Then he took her on his his horse as his bride and rode away with her. They were, however, obliged to pass the grave, and there, on the hazel-tree, sat the two pigeons and cried,

"Turn and peep, turn and peep,
There's blood within the shoe,
The shoe it is too small for her,
The true bride waits for you."

Then he looked at her foot and saw how the blood was streaming from it. He turned his horse round and took the false bride home again, and said she was not the true one, and that the other sister was to put the shoe on. Then this one went into her chamber and got her toes safely into the shoe, but her heel was too large. So her mother gave her a knife and said, "Cut a bit off thy heel; when thou art Queen thou wilt have no more need to go on foot." The maiden cut a bit off her heel, forced her foot into the shoe, swallowed the pain, and went out to the King's son. He took her on his horse as his bride, and rode away with her, but when they passed by the hazel-tree, two little pigeons sat on it and cried,

"Turn and peep, turn and peep,
There's blood within the shoe
The shoe it is too small for her,
The true bride waits for you."

He looked down at her foot and saw how the blood was running out of her shoe, and how it had stained her white stocking. Then he turned his horse and took the false bride home again. "This also is not the right one," said he, "have you no other daughter?" "No," said the man, "There is still a little stunted kitchen-wench which my late wife left behind her, but she cannot possibly be the bride." The King's son said he was to send her up to him; but the mother answered, "Oh, no, she is much too dirty, she cannot show herself!" He absolutely insisted on it, and Cinderella had to be called. She first washed her hands and face clean, and then went and bowed down before the King's son, who gave her the golden shoe. Then she seated herself on a stool, drew her foot out of the heavy wooden shoe, and put it into the slipper, which fitted like a glove. And when she rose up and the King's son looked at her face he recognized the beautiful maiden who had danced with him and cried, "That is the true bride!" The step-mother and the two sisters were terrified and became pale with rage; he, however, took Cinderella on his horse and rode away with her. As they passed by the hazel-tree, the two white doves cried --

"Turn and peep, turn and peep,
No blood is in the shoe,
The shoe is not too small for her,
The true bride rides with you,"

and when they had cried that, the two came flying down and placed themselves on Cinderella's shoulders, one on the right, the other on the left, and remained sitting there.

When the wedding with the King's son had to be celebrated, the two false sisters came and wanted to get into favour with Cinderella and share her good fortune. When the betrothed couple went to church, the elder was at the right side and the younger at the left, and the pigeons pecked out one eye of each of them. Afterwards as they came back, the elder was at the left, and the younger at the right, and then the pigeons pecked out the other eye of each. And thus, for their wickedness and falsehood, they were punished with blindness as long as they lived.

Once she was done sharing the story, she looked up at the students, "This version is a little more violent and more realisticish...What are some of the differences in the Disney Sugar Coated version that many of you may be familiar with and the Grimm Brothers' version?" she asked hoping the student could point out a good list of differences.

Hannah listened to the two stories and she had to admit she kind of liked the second story better. She thought about how they were both different and only one thing really stood out to her. "Professor the main thing that I noticed was that the second story used stronger and harsher words." she said with a raised hand.

She wasn't sure how else to explain it. They were the same story on the second one was a bit harsher. She hoped the professor understood what she was getting at.

So this was the original! Sarah eagerly raised her hand "In the version I read, there was no tree or birds. There were 2 mice that helped Cinderella make a dress. Yet when the step sisters saw the dress Cinderella had made with scraps of material they tore it with rage. Cinderella began to cry after the the family left to the ball and her fairy godmother appeared. The fairy godmother turned a pumpkin into the coach, mice into horsemen etc." the words rushed out of Sarah's mouth - there were so many differences. "Also in the version I read, the clothes Cinderella wore to the ball on the one night was blue, the other night the ballgown was pink and on the last night the ballgown was white. Also in the that version, the shoe she left behind was a glass slipper. And thank goodness the Disney version isn't as gory, with no poking eyes out business or cutting heels and toes off! And in the disney version it is stated that the girls name was Ella at the beginning." There was so much more to say, yet Sarah stopped there in order to give other people a chance.

The Prefect did not like toasted marshmallows. However, she took a stick and jabbed it into the marshmallow and when her turn came for the fire, she extended the stick and made sure to toast it just a bit before sitting back down.

Louisa listened to the two German brothers story, and Disney which she already knew about thanks to her stepdad who wouldn't shut up about it, back when they weren't rivals. When the teacher asked a question though, Louisa couldn't help but smile at Vickers and then raise her own hand, "I would wish to become a very powerful and educated witch with my own spot in the wizardy world." That was her one and maybe only ambition in life, "And to unfreeze our head of house and friends." Sigh.

When the professor was done sharing the HORRIBLE real Cinderella story and asked a question... Louisa swallowed and blinked. Well. Wasn't that just a very weird way of enriching their little party with stories? Turned out this was a horror story around the bonfire. Only there was no bonfire.

Raising her hand slowly, Louisa answered, "Well first off the Disney version mentions a witch that helps Cinderella get to the party whereas the Grimm brothers' version tells us it was the girl chanting at her mother's grave." Grimm brothers, what an ironic name. "Also in Disney's version, the sisters don't hurt themselves in order to get their feet into the shoes, no brutality." The Prefect made a face at that.

Maxwell listened to the story and compared it with the disney version. Maxwell was never much of a scholar but he loved Muggle fairy tales, their odd concept of magic always interested him. He'd read both versions before. "Well, professor The Brothers Grimm often wrote darker, scarier stories to scare children into behaving to where Walt Disney made lovely family movies where as you said 'Love conquers all' I think that's honestly the biggest difference we see here." He said not sure if she wanted the details of the story that were different, but he liked his answer.

There is a lot more violence in the Brothers Grimm version. It even had pigeons pecked out one eye from the older sister and the younger one. The Disney version would never have that in it. Well Nigel guessed that would be a notable difference So Nigel raised his hand.

"Professor, The Grimm's version had pigeons pecked out one eye from the older sister and the younger one at the end and they cut off part of their foot to get in the shoe. The Disney version has a happy ending and no violence and no blindness for the step sisters."

Those Grimm Brothers sure do know how to make a scary fairy tale Nigel thought.

SPOILER!!: catch up
Elise looked around as her classmates gave carefree answers, as if nothing in the world mattered but those two wishes. But Elise's wish meant something more. She wanted her life back, she screamed inside. She wanted a home, a family. But managed to keep her tone deceptively calm.

"I'd wish my mother was still alive,"
she said, fiddling with her tie. Because if her mother hadn't died, she'd still have a family and they could be normal. But maybe she could wish for something less selfish. "And I'd ask for people to be happy. Because sad people make other people sad and the world doesn't feel the same when you're sad."

Maybe she'd said too much...

But then, Professor Cerulean recited the story and Elise drew the blanket closer around her body in fear. Jolting a little towards the end, she buried her head between her knees and willed the images of the blood to leave her. It was just disgusting.

Raising her hand, Elise tried to keep her voice steady. "In the Grimm brothers' stories, the stories tend to be more sinister as if to scare children into behaving themselves. Disney, however is more suited for modern children who are taught that love always wins."

Like that story with Leticia Somnolens.

Annabelle noticed a difference between the two stories and raised her hand. "Professor, in the Brother's Grimm Tale, the maiden cut off her heel and made it bleed to fit into the shoe to go to the ball. In the Disney version, there was no blood and the maiden did not go with the prince and dealt with the pain of the shoe not fitting." She knew the Brother's Grimm Tale was kind of violent but she never knew how different it could be.

Listening intently as she did so, Nessie began twiddle with her thumb. This version of Cinderella was similar yet not as child friendly. It was more realistic of course, but it was a tad gruesome too. If Ness had to think about ti, she decided she would NEVER EVER chop her toes or heels off just to marry a prince. She wouldn't care how rich he was, she wouldn't do that for anyone unless she truly felt she loved them with all her heart and that it was worth it. Those two step-sisters were just crazy and so was that step mother.

Trying not to picture how they cut their feet off, Ness looked back at the Professor and decided it be best to answer her question. "Professor, I felt that this version was not exactly for children, well at least not children in our times." She added the last bit, remembering that a long time ago, people, even children used to find these things entertaining. "I think that's why disney decided to change it, they probably wanted more people to enjoy it." she nodded a tiny bit then resorted back to her last bite of her marshmellow.
