Default CoMC/HoM One: Lake Creatures

Its a perfect day for a class outside, and by the lake too! The warm september breeze swept the grounds at the south side of the castle. The location was popular for students who generally liked roaming around outside, but it was not a good place to take notes. Which was probably why Professor Scabior did not look at ease as he stood, holding a quiet conversation with Professor Williamson. The Care of Magical Creatures Professor looked quite fine though, turning away from the conversation to flash a smile at each new student that arrived.

"Just gather around here, and take a seat." Scabior said loudly, pointing to the general grassy area.

"It is called the Black Lake." He nodded. "Though, I am not quite sure if Merpeople and Grinfilow dislike light-William?" He looked toward the big-kid-professor who was sitting now on the ground.

"No. It is actually a pretty old name." A few hundred years old at least. [B]"But first years being scared does have something to do with it. He smiled.

"That would be an understandable reason." He gave a nod toward the Ravenclaw Prefect. "However I believe the lake still encompasses charms which would drive Muggles away, and so they would not even have the chance to see any magical creatures if the lake was not so dark." Scabior was impressed by the answer though.

Oh. Well. "Yes that is an alright answer then." But that was still the previous question."

"Yes it is." And nice guess too. "Usually the deeper a body of water is the bluer it looks due the the reflection of the sky." Not black though.

"Yes, thats exactly why." He gave a small nod to all the students.

"And I don't know if the students named it." He added for Autumn's answer. They probably did. Hm.

"Good guess but not quite."

"Correct."

"Scaring is a reason behind the colour ." Nod.

-------

"As most of you started the lake is known as the black lake." Nod. "And many of your guesses are right. It is known as this because of its dark murky colour when looked at on land. Underneath its more of a dark greenish colour." Though it was still murky if you went low enough.

"The water isn't dark because it's dirty." He looked around, daring anyone to say he was wrong. Like he had said before, there were CHARMS placed on the lake to ensure its cleanliness. "It is dark because, just like the forbidden forrest, the lake can be dangerous. The four founders cast spells on the lake to make it unappealing for younger unknowing children to just jump in, to prevent any attack from creatures." And for the most part that worked over the years. "And the name just....fell into place. Maybe by some students." That wasn't recorded.

"Now, there are things other than creatures that are rumoured to be under the lake. Does anyone have any guess to what these things might be?" NOT creatures. Creatures were certainly not things.

Harvey listened to the question and thought about it and puts his hand up "Well Professor there could be... ruins, plants, rocks amongst many other things down there. Maybe even some wrecks down there " he answered thinking about the muggle waters and what could be found down there..

Satisfied with the job ole' Scabbers was doing so far, William relaxed back on the grass, resting his weight on his hands as he lazily studied the clouds in the sky and occasionally observed the students answering questions. He was listening, make no mistake about that, but if anyone were watching him, they might think he was just.... day dreaming.

In reality he was plotting out his part of the lesson, all to eager to just dive right in already.

"Correct. It was used in the past as the bases for one of the tasks in a previous Triwizard Tournament." He nodded at all the students who mentioned it.

"Do YOU want to go ahead and drink the lake water?" Scabior asked the first year.

SPOILER!!: Creatures People

"All good answers, yes." He nodded

"Your theory makes sense…" But that's all it was, a theory, and so it was wrong. Or could be wrong.

"No. The Muggles are ignorant to Hogwarts because of all the charms and spells that are on it. If anything, building a giant castle next to an important source of water would make Muggles suspicious and probably end up killing a bunch of them because their water source was cut off." He smiled. Happy Miss Stone?

Scabior looking to Williamson then shrugged. "That's a good guess, yeah."

Dash nodded, catching on to what was being said "…And animals need water, and so the lake supplies that." That's where she was getting at right? Either way, what she said made said. He smiled at her.

"Correct, traveling could have been an issue, another means of escape or enter if deemed fit." He nodded.

"Yes." He nodded. Like someone before had said right?

Dash nodded but gave a skeptical look soon after. "You are correct on most parts, though I doubt the lake was purposely created to help aid the flooding of Hogwarts." Just a little note there, if that was what she meant.

"Correct, back when Hogwarts was founded, a large body of water could be deemed dangerous. No one could really know what resisted in it."

Scabior raised a brow. "So what you are saying Miss Greingoth and Miss Reed is that the Hogwarts founders included the lake while creating this glorious school to hide and protect students of Salazar's Slytherins house and yet leave all other students unprotected?" He snorted. He liked the idea…sadly, no. "Nice try."

He blinked, slightly confused, just as the first year was it seemed. "I'm not sure you understood the question Miss Penta."

"Right you two are! The tradition of first years arriving to hogwarts on boats is a major way that the lake has been used in the past and even presently." Good job.

"Right, it was used negatively then." He nodded.

…This girl was weird. Ravenclaws. Was he actually suppose to answer her? "Right….I'll try to dig those up for you Miss Odessa." Dig up the non-existent transcripts.

That, was a whole bunch of information just shot right at him. And Scabior wasn't able to grasp any of it. "Please Miss Potter…learn how to take pauses when you are speaking." But she got a nod too because….something had to be right out of all the things she said.

"It was here." He said with a sigh

A different spin on things. Scabior smiled. "Makes perfect sense Miss Riddle." Good job.

Scabior gave the boy a nod. "That makes sense to me Mr Gert." Which meant that he could have been right.

"No. I just said that we were studying the lake." He eyed the Ravenclaw, tempted to take points for her lack of attention.

"They didn't make the lake. They included it."

Wow. Scabior just looked at the kid and chuckled. "Who wouldn't want a lake indeed."

He nodded in agreement, the creatures were important.

"Used just like how it is now then you mean?" He nodded.

"I doubt the mermaids would want to meet the students." Though he wasn't an expert in Magical Creatures, APPARENTLY that was Williamson, so the man had better say in this.

[B]"A real home." He repeated. "I would surely hope that your house does not include a lake inside."

"That could keep the Ministry away.." Huh. Interesting. Sadly if that was true, it didn't work now.

SPOILER!!: Safe

"Right, as a means of safely, having a lake sounds pretty smart."

"So they included a lake to make the Slytherin Common Room look creepy." He repeated the boys words, just so he could hear how ridiculous it actually sounded.

"Thats what the enchantments are for." Scabior said shaking his head.

"…." Scabior just stared.

"Not quite. Not only because of them."

"Of course there is life in the lake." He said, slightly annoyed. That didn't even need to be stated.

Lake to hold water? Scabior chuckled. "But yes, it was already here when they built Hogwarts."

Scabior just stared at the young boy. "You Mr Bellaire. Please do not have any sweets before coming to any of my classes."

"It could have been sure." Though, they probably didn't drink right form the lake.

"Noonono." Sigh. First years. "They didn't make the lake. They included it." He would explain after.

SPOILER!!: Plumbing

Scabior just nodded his head at the few people who said something about plumbing issues.

-----------

"To clear somethings up, the founders did not make the lake." He looked toward a few first years who were asking. "I said they included it. Meaning, that when they set out to find a place to build Hogwarts they, decided early on to build the castle in an area that included a lake."

He nodded. Hopefully they understood now. "So really, your guesses are as good as mine. Could have been for the creatures to study in classes, or for the protection of the students. What is know about the main inclusion of the lake is that the founders did find it important to somehow be supplied to a fresh source of water, and this is why like a handful of you mentioned." He nodded at those people. "All Hogwarts plumping runs through the lake." He paused. "But don't worry, there are charms, set upon the lake to make sure that all the water in it, and all the water that we obtain is clean."

"Over the years the lake has been used for much more than just a source in which the plumbing runs through. It has been used for transportation, recreational, educational purposes and even that one time during the Triwizard Tournament as a task." He nodded. You guys did not have to write any of this down. But you had to REMEMBER. It was easy enough.

"The lake has a general name associated with it, do any one know what this is? For those of you who know what the name is it, any guesses as to why it was giving this name?" They didn't have to answer both questions, only one. Whatever they wanted really.

Vlimia felt a warm glimmer of pride in her answer when the proffesor nodded at her. Wasn't too bad for a firstie, was she? Vlim snorted with a silent peal of laughter when the proffesor mentioned that some people thought the founders had actually created the lake, but composed herself almost immediately, forcing herself to think that it was a valid question. Some people might be Muggleborn and not know about Hogwarts.

SPOILER!!: Scabior again...

Vlimia knew this question off by heart. Her parents had told her both of the answers numerous times. She raised her hand as eagerly as before, and replied "The Slytherin common room is beneath the lake, accessed through an entrance in the school dungeons. Many people think their common room is actually in the Dungeons, but it is not. The Chamber of Secrets is also believed to be beneath the lake, but those are merely rumours." Vlim answered, hoping it was a sufficient answer. She also wondered when they were going to get on with Care of Magical Creatures, because, although she liked History, she wanted to see the Magical Creatures. She took a great interest in them, and had already signed up for the Magical Creatures Sanctuary thing.

Under the lake? Well the Slytherin Common Room was rumored to be under the lake but that could not be what he was referring to. The most he could be referring to was some kind of plant life or maybe like a sunken boat or something. Of course, she could not prove that there was a boat under the lake... eh... well... ugh Common Room it was.

Selina rose her hand and said, "The rumor is that the Slytherin Common Room is under the black lake." Which would explain the Slytherin CRABBY attitude. Heh CRAB-by attitude. That was punny.

A ship in harbor is safe — but that is not what ships are built for.

So when he said not creatures, he meant things and things that doens't have life? "Treasures and lost items?" Victoria said hopefully. Lakes can have stuff like that too right? Though pirates rarely sail on lakes, especially on the Hogwarts lake...

Melanie looked out at the lake and thought. What would someone hide in a lake?

"Perhaps there are magical artifacts that were put in the lake for safe-keeping, or maybe there are secret passages into Hogwarts." The lake certainly looked ominous enough to be hiding something.

Lily wasn't sure why the professor was asking so many questions about the lake when he wasn't sure of the answers to the questions. Lily figured that there were creatures in the lake along with a variety of plants. And going off the person who had responded before her, Lily raised her hand and answered "Well, there had got to be some sort of channel or something that allowed the Durmstrang ship to leave. And there has to be some sort of habitat for these merpeople since they are supposed to be very intelligent creatures."

August needed the wind to STOP so he could take notes!!!

The Gryffindor had been struggling each time Professor Scabior had dropped a nugget of information on them about the History or use of the Black Lake to write on his piece of parchment but the stupid wind had been trying its best to keep that from happening.

Now they were to guess what all things, not creatures were in the lake. "Um are there any big rocks?" he asked from where he sat. That would definately be interesting. "Like boulders and stuff that have fallen off the cliff?" The one that Hogwarts sort of sat on on the one side of the Lake.

"You mean things like underground caverns, or hidden cities? Buried treasure?" His eyes glinted as the gears turned in his head. Who knew what was down there? "Secret, hidden tunnels for transportation out of the school grounds?" Now, he knew that wouldn't have been very safe. If outsiders could enter school grounds through a tunnel in the lake, that would cause a lot of security problems. However, if it was a secret tunnel no one could locate, then it would certainly be a rumor, then, wouldn't it?

Yeaaaah. Whatever the man had said. Dash just nodded, listening just slightly. It made sense. Merpeople. Not like he would understand them more than that.

Some people might be Muggleborn and not know about Hogwarts.

What?..."You're correct to a point. The Slytherin common room is located in the dungeons, however it is also underneath the lake." Ergo, the dungeons were underneath the lake as well.

Selina rose her hand and said, "The rumor is that the Slytherin Common Room is under the black lake." Which would explain the Slytherin CRABBY attitude. Heh CRAB-by attitude. That was punny.
"Right, yes." That was the rumour.

"Could be." He doubted it. Largely because people would be attacked before they had the chance to enter.

"Right. Really, the simplest things rumoured to be beneath the lake are water plants." Bentley would be so proud.

"Right!" Extreme nod. "The Chamber is rumoured to be underneath the lake."

"...And the Slytherin Common Room." He expected the snakes to know. Though, really the common room was underneath the lake and not in it, but it worked.

Blink. "...Oh yes, I read about that.." And recently too. "There very well could be haunted realms." Good point!

Zhenya raised her hand, "Professor I know that the lake was used as the second challenge of the Triwizard Tournament where the four students had to dive into the waters to find something treasured of theirs, which were their friends and family. They had to encounter all the creatures underneath as well," she said. She would not ever want to be in that lake.

Vicker's glanced momentarily at the COMC Professor before turning his attention back to the Historian. What can be found under the lake? Like literally under or within? He raised his hand tentatively "Merpeople are the most famous residents of the Black Lake, and they have been known to be an independent people, therefore they would have communities-- structures that they live in and conduct their own businesses in." Just as Wizards and Muggles above ground. "Also there is the Slytherin Common Room which extends partly into the lake." Which he had to wonder about the dangers of the lake leaking into the place. He may have to talk to a Slytherin for that.

A major event? There was only one event that came to his mind and it was purely because he read about it, not something he experienced unfortunately "The 2nd Task of the 1994 Tri-Wizard Tournament Professor" he said raising his hand.

Although she had been quite interested in the subject at hand, Sylia couldn't help but turn her attention towards the scenery. Since they were talking about the lake, she watched as the slight slush of water hit at the edge of land, making a tiny swishing noise. Maybe other teachers would teach classes outside, she thought. She hoped so. It was so peaceful.

Snapping back, she heard one of the Professors speak, then followed by a slew of students all adding in their theories. For some reason she felt the need to restrain herself before she look stupid like the rest of them. Were all Hogwarts children like this? Nevertheless, she rose a delicate hand in the air, finally willing to say something during this lesson. Might as well anyways.

"One of the former Headmaster's, Albus Dumbledore, had his funeral here on the grounds." From what she had read was that they had it here. There were so many speculations as to what kind of man he was. Some said he was manipulative and others that he was a saint. Shaking that long thought out of her head, she cleared her throat. "Far off in the middle of the lake is a tiny island where it was said his remains are to be resting." Or at least she had read about.

Well, this was easy… or not. Since the professor had put the emphasis on by and around, Sky guessed he wasn't looking for the Trwiwizard Tournament… "The death of Professor Snape…?" she guessed. "Which led to the "death"" here she used air quotes " of Harry Potter in 1998."

Max thought for a moment, listening to the answers of the other students. Triwizard Tournament, yes. But... Max's hand raised again. "How about former Headmaster Dumbledore's funeral?" That was a momentous occasion by the lake. All of the creatures there to honor him, too. He thought it was quite a big deal that a headmaster perished on the grounds and was honored there on the school grounds by the lake.

Well there was a time when her brother mentioned people skinny dipping in the lake with the Squid, but that wasn't anything new.. Right? Hmm.. Oh! Right there was-*Raises hand* "Professor Albus Dumbledore who was previously a Headmaster in his time, his funeral was held near the Lake."

Whatever they wanted really.[/color]

Alyssa blushed when the Professor reminded her to pause between sentences. She recalled him saying something like "less, is more" last term to her, so before she raised her hand to answer, she made sure that her answer was short and to the point. "Professor, the lake is called the Black Lake. Some say it was called after the family Black but I think it's because it is so deep that when one looks deep down into it, all you see is black."

SPOILER!!: Professor Scabior

Before she could even finish answering her question, the Professor had posed another one, so Alyssa paused to think again, before she raised her hand to answer. 'Okay he said not just creatures. So there's no need to mention the creatures and living things down there.'Alyssa thought to herself before raising her hand and answering.

"Professor, since the lake is so deep, could there be ruins underneath there? Maybe underwater caverns or tunnels that lead out to the sea. Or even buried cities. Cities that were here before a natural catastrophe happened and it was covered by the lake."

But then again after she had just answered that question, the Professor posed another one. 'Whoa Professor, could you please slow down,'Alyssa thought to herself, as she struggled to play catch up.

Alyssa thought for awhile before she raised her hand and answered. "Professor, I don't know whether you can count this as a major event, but Professor Dumbledore was buried in a tomb that lies along the shores of the lake after the Battle at the Astronomy Tower or there's another event that happened on June 6th, 1994, where hundreds of Dementors attacked Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Sirius Black on the shores of the lake"."Alyssa hope that at least one answer was correct. She knew that the Professor had only asked for one answer but since somebody had already mentioned Dumbledore's burial, she figured she add another example.

Autumn thought about the lake, she wonderd whatother secrets it held that not even the professor would know... she tried to think she wanted to earn points! She wanted to contriubute on every question! "Hmm Is the twiwizard tornamunt one of the events that took place? The 4 contestants Harry, fleaur, victor and cedric all had to go into the lake insearch of something they would surely miss. Also the durmstrang ship arrived via the lake."

August raised his hand at the question of an event that had taken place by the Lake that was really important. He had heard about this event, even only being at Hogwarts for a year so far. Everyone knew about it. "Professor, didn't part of the Battle of Hogwarts, where Harry Potter finally defeated Lord Voldemort for the final time take place on the grounds of school and probably by this lake?"

He also thought he would mention one that he knew was going to be right, he had heard about the Triwizard Tournament coming back to the school just a few terms ago from an olders student last term and had studied it in the Library. "I think there was once a Lake inspired event back around the same time as the Battle of Hogwarts for the legendary Triwizard Tournament." But he wasn't too sure on that one.

After a brief moment thinking, Eino's hand shot up and after receiving permission to speak he proceeded. "The Black Lake could possibly be one of the sites where merpeople opted to be classified as Beast instead of Being by the British Ministry, which is an important event for both the subjects of history and magical creatures." Maybe this wasn't exactly what Professor Scabior was looking for, but since everyone had already pointed the major events, Eino thought that something different, and equally important, was worth mentioning.

Yeaaaaaaaaah...and Professor Scabior and implied that he was joking when he said that he didn't hate her. The response to her theory was enough of an indicator to flip that opinion back to the other side. Shame really, because Kurumi was actually sort of beginning to like the man.

Not wanting to receive the same glare again, Kurumi remained silent during the next parts of the lesson, choosing to instead write down diligent notes on her parchment. Her face did brighten up when Professor Williamson chimed in and spoke about merpeople. Finally, a professor that didn't just sit there and glare at people as he hated the world. He was probably jealous about Professor Roslund snogging Professor Schirmer on the train. It seemed very logical after what she had been told that the man would be...well...especially agitated.

She wanted to ask Professor Williamson more question, but Professor Dagger Eyes was the one running the show for the moment, so her hand remained at her side.

Setting her quill down for now, Kurumi raised her hand to answer the latest question. Seeing as everyone was mentioning the Triwizard Tournament, Kurumi option for the other option...when someone had already mentioned the Funeral of Albus Dumbledore. "As some have mentioned already, the funeral of former Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore took place here." She paused for just a moment to collect her thoughts. "Lord Voldemort came to this location searching for the Elder Wand and broke into Dumbledore's tomb to take it." And, well, if his funeral had never taken place at the Black Lake, then Voldemort would have never come here looking for the Elder Wand.

Desiree smiled as the Professor nodded at her answer, she had been right! A small amount of pride welled up in her over the fact, and she decided that maybeee he wasn't that bad. She tried to take in all the rest of the information he said, commit it to memory, since they didn't have paper (or anything to write on) not even bothering to answer the question about the Black Lake. He probably didn't appreciate twenty of the same answers anyway..

SPOILER!!: Professor Scabior

Just a liittle bit more history to go through. Scabior cleared his through before he began talking once more. "Now so far we've been talking about the lake and what's in it." All that good stuff. "But important events have also taken place by and around the lake. Two major events in particular. Does anyone know of these events? And please, only say one per person." And he wasn't talking about little things like campfires either.

Caverns? Kingdoms? Treasures? Her eyes widened, she had no idea that all those things could be hidden down there. But with a quick glance at the dark murky mass of water, she realized that anything could be down there. She decided to take swimming in the lake off of her things to do list. You know just to be safe.

Her thoughts were interrupted as they moved onto the next question, historical events around the lake.. hmm. everyone had already said the Triwizard Tournament, and Dumbledore's funeral.. Dumbledore! An idea popped into her head and she quickly raised her hand "I'm not sure if this is considered an "event" exactly.. " but it was important "When Voldemort broke through Dumbledore's grave and took the elder wand, it happened right out by the lake." since that's where he was buried and all, the only Hogwarts professor to be buried on the grounds.. if she had heard her sister correctly. It seemed like a pretty big event to her. Voldemort with the Elder Wand.
