Marilyn felt SO ashamed about the points loss...

Hello...

That was it?

Breathing out a harsh breathe through her nose, Evelyn narrowed her eyes somewhat before looking around to see who else was joining them. Yup, she was still mad.

"Good morning everyone! Welcome to the first Herbology lesson of the term,"
she started, smiling at all the fresh faces. She pulled her robes a little tighter around her. Unlike the other greenhouses this one was enchanted to stay at a crisp cool temperature, perfect for toadstools.
"As you have all gathered, today we are looking at toadstools, now before we start looking at the ones behind me..." she indicated to the patches of toadstools behind her, "... who can tell me what a toadstool is?"

"Hands up please... and if I don't already know you're name just introduce yourself first please."
They would know if she knew them or not... right?

With a swift swish of her wand the Blackboard rubbed out the previous message, and a new one appeared on its surface.

It wasn't long before the lesson actually started. Which was a good thing actually. Less time to think of revenge...stuff.

What?

Glancing towards the toadstools that was behind the Professor, Evelyn's eyes lost their narrowed look and instead was quite neutral. Huh. She hadn't noticed those before. Then again, the first person she saw after Bentley was Marilyn and then all thoughts disappeared except the ones covered in red. Meep.

Hmm, time to raise her hand she supposed. "A toadstool is a general term for a variety of mushroom types, some being less harmful while others you'll have to be rather...careful around. At least the dangerous and poisonous ones you do." And what were those behind her, hmmm? Evelyn didn't get the chance to look!

sweetpinkpixie 09-09-2011 01:44 PM

Kurumi smiled as Professor Bentley began the lesson, but her eyes never left the toadstools behind the woman...and she hoped that Walnut was hiding somewhere in the Gryffindor common room and not anywhere here in the green houses.

After the question was posed, Kurumi's hand shot up. "A toadstool, as has already been mentioned, is a mushroom. However, usually when one refers to a mushroom as a toadstool, they are talking about the shape and referring to a mushroom that is not suitable for eating or is poisonous." She paused for a moment to collect her thoughts a bit more. "I believe I have also read that some people think the name comes from poisonous frogs that excrete poison from their skin...or that toads really liked sitting on this particular type of mushroom." Hence the stool...being used by a toad...

StarShine 09-09-2011 01:44 PM

Toadstools! As in those venomous, HORRIBLE plants! Joăo eyed them suspiciously. Yep, good thing he had chosen a seat far, faaar away from them. Raising his hand, he said "They are venomous fungus. They should not be eaten." See, under stress, he even rhymed.

luna-p 09-09-2011 01:45 PM

Ashley looked up as the lesson started, thinking about the question and peering at the weird looking plants to try and find an answer to them. He had already decided to try his best to answer questions, though, even if he wasn't sure, so up went his hand.
"It's a weird looking mushroom plant? That... toads sit on?" No idea, but hey, toad+stool, right? "Oh, and I'm Ashley. Moon." He was pretty sure she didn't know him, so he added that part in, since she had said to.

Her search was postponed for the time being when she heard someone call her name, and she looked up to see the curly hair that could really only belong to one person. "Hello Gideon," she smiled as she watched him sit down near her. "I hope you've brought your dragonhide gloves..." she pointed towards the toadstools.

Yep, she had a bad feeling that perhaps Professor Bentley was going to BITE off more than the students could chew this lesson.

Kurumi ought to have noticed that Carter had, once again, come into class only a few steps after she had. Come to think of it, her foot steps had been echoing through the corridors more than usual, but she thought that perhaps she was just treading too strongly on the cobblestone floors.

She nodding to the captain in greeting when she saw someone else out of the corner of her eye.

HIM.

Kurumi's eyes narrowed for a moment, but not long enough for him to take notice, before turning her head back to the front. The thought didn't even cross her mind that this was a change of pace in seeing him actually walk into a classroom, but such positive thoughts were far from her mind right now.

Adam Burn was one of the biggest jerks she knew, and she was rather hoping that Salander would show up soon. Maybe they would end up flinging manure at each other or something.

Gideon nodded at her words, pulling out said gloves as they were mentioned. "Yep brought them just as directed," he answered, following her gaze to the toadstools. "Though they're certainly becoming more and more perminantly needed eh?" Bending down slightly from his perch on the stool to return his bag at his feet, when he looked up and caught the girl's eyes once more he noticed them narrowed and frowned wondering what the cause was. He didn't have much time to dwell on it however as the professor started class and he raised his hand to answer.

"A toadstool is a fungus and or type of mushroom," he answered not giving his name for surely she knew it from last term. "It can he harmful to touch and poisononous."

Toadstool? Raven remembered that her mom had ever told her about it.

"Toadstool is a kind of poisonus mushroom. My mom had ever told me that."

Janet thought about the professor's question. What is a toadstool ?. She remembered seeing something that looked like a mushroom sort of thing. She raised her hand and answered, "Is it like a mushroom, but it's not edible ? I remembered hearing something called a leaping toadstool. So, I guess it's a magical inedible mushroom"

JustAlice 09-09-2011 01:49 PM

Aurora raised her hand, "Professor, a Toad Stool is a family of fungus, specifically a type of mushroom. They usually grow in patches though some are known to grow alone. When fungus grows in patches it is still one plant as they are connected under the ground." Yep, that was why people should read during the holidays. "Toad Stools specifically usually have a large cap and a thick stalk. They can also be very poisonous. The blood toad stool looks like a common open cap mushroom but is incredibly poisonous and you can only tell by breaking it as the flesh on the inside is bright red." Andd... breathe. That one there looked nasty... she kept her eye on it and was about to ask if it was what she thought it was but figured she'd said enough... didn't want to look like a know-it-all...

As Nora must've guessed, they were going to talk about toadstools.

... why did she have a bad feeling about this?

Anyway. The professor asked a fairly simple question, so she raised her hand. "A toadstool is a type of mushroom, which can also be poisonous." Riiiight? And that was the reason Nora had a bad feeling about this lesson. But all the negative thoughts had to be banished away. Somewhere far, far away.

"Oh, and my name is Nora Reed." There. Now professor Bentley knew who she was as well.

Toadstools aye?

What was with the professors here asking the students for the answers? It was like they didn't know anything much and waited to hear the best answer and then would pick that one to roll with and act as if they knew all along.

Corey was on to you, professors.

He did put a hand up though. "Toadstools are..." He heard an older Slytherin yell out and then interupted himself with a fist pump. "YEAH, PEACH Toadstool! She was in Forbes magazine you know." Kind of hot for a fictional animated character. And it wasn't about the looks, it was about the POWER. Princess Peach Toadstool was POWERFUL.

Wait... he'd lost his train of thought.

Oh there it was.

"Toadstools are fungi, not always poisonous like some people reckon." He side eyed a few examples of 'some people' "If you go in a muggle back yard, sometimes you'll find one made out of stone and painted, with a gnome that looks more like a Redcap on it, fishing." Those crazy muggles.

His mum had a whole bunch.

jesifur 09-09-2011 01:54 PM

Jesifur had been sitting in the back of the class head in her book and only noticed class had begun when the teacher asked the question "what is a toadstool?".
Having just read this she was ready with the answer. Jesifur raised her hand high into the air and answered,

"There are over thirty varieties of toadstools. They resemble mushrooms. Though toadstools are poisonous they are often useful in potions and other magical endeavors. Especially in healing. Oh, oops, sorry professor, My name is Jesifur Hitchens, first year Hufflepuff." she said turning pink.

Janice put some thought in this. What is a toadstool? she thought. Oooh!! She raised her hand and answered.

"A toadstool is somekind of mushroom that has magical properties. Like the Leaping Toadstool!"

A toadstool? Well, a toadstool was just a toadstool. Or... A mushroom? Hugo raised his hand. "I think a toadstool is a mushroom, but I think the term is mostly used for dangerous or poisonous mushrooms." Right?

Speaking of plants... There were a lot of them in here! And it was so comfortably warm. She could totally get used to this.

And Orchid!

"Gooood morning! You look excited," Lauren told Orchid as she approached her. Her friend was currently standing before whom Lauren assumed was their professor, so she did the polite thing and introduce herself.

"Hi! I'm Lauren Morgan."

"Lauren! Hi! And yeah, I am! I love Herbology, it's my second favorite class, first being Care of Magical Creatures, of course." "I perfectly am Professor." So, Professor was the kind of teacher who really has a ready helping hand to students and Beatrice rather liked that. And then, when she told her all about the special treat she got for all of them, Beezus' eyes immediately settled on the bunch of toadstools opposite of them. "Yeah, I can just imagine Professor." she answered, grinning. She then seated herself once more as Professor Bentley has announced the official start of the class.

When the first question popped out, Beatrice immediately thought for a good answer, Toadstools ? Professor Bentley asks what they are. She knew of course and willingly raised her hand while waiting for her turn. After some the students have answered and a silence fell over, she stood up and gave hers. "Well, a toadstool is a kind of mushroom both here in the Magical World and also in the Muggle World. It is unlike plants that can produce their own food. Since it is a mushroom then it doesn't undergo food processing or otherwise known to Muggles as Photosynthesis. Toadstools in the Magical Realm have magic of course and has different characteristics. Others can presumably look like stools and there are others who have the ability to jump."

After giving out her answer, she settle herself to her seat once again. Hoping that she had a good answer and that it didn't go overboard.

Yay class is starting! Hmm what is a toadstool... As much as her mother was a green thump, there were never toadstools in Kynthia's backyard. Why would any Muggle plant a toadstool anyway? Her brother though used to have an interesting book on plants... She used to browse through the pages and look at all the pictures of strange flowers and their names. There was also whole category about mushrooms. Raising her hand she waited for the teacher to allow her to speak.

"My name is Kynthia Near and I'm a first year. Toadstools are mushrooms. As indicated by their red colour and white dots, they are poisonous. Toadstools are a quite common species of mushroom and can be found nearly everywhere in the world, in forests or meadows."

Those toadstools look deliciously yummy. The last thing she had was a half cooked egg this morning. She has to resist herself from launching towards them toadstools or she'd end up in the

I) Hospital Wing
II) Dungeon Five
III) Six feet under

And those were sorted from the less severe to fatal. Alright. Now back to the lesson. She puts a hand up before answering. "Some kind of fungus? Mostly inedible, I guess. They're like poisonous mushrooms, aren't they?"

hermygirl 09-09-2011 02:12 PM

Spike sat up a bit as the lesson started and raised his hand. He knew a bit about toadstools, since there were a few to be found in the woods he and a few friends played in over the summer. Always good to know which ones might kill you, and which ones might be nice as a little snackette.

"As others have said, toadstools are a type of fungi and don't actually have to be poisonous. They are usually characterised by the stalk and cap shape. What's funky about them is underground they help decay dead and rotten plants, and return those nutrients to the soil to help new plants grow."

Not so long, Professor Bentley started the class. She had read about basic Herbology and she was sure she came up to this word. Right! There was a whole chapter about it. Erin raised her hand and speak, "Professor, toadstool is a type of an umbrella-shaped mushroom as I have read. I was quite familiar to it as well, since it was often used as a poisonous mushroom in Muggletales," she chuckled a little.

Okay, ...seriously?

Did Kurumi Hollingberry always have to answer that way? She always had to give these detailed answers that made everyone else seem like they were mere bumps on logs. No, Sierra was not jealous. Not a whole lot, at least. It would just make her entire day, or entire life, if the girl would answer incorrectly or lose a good ten points just once...

Sierra had gotten too lost in her thoughts and nearly missed her chance to answer. Her hand quickly went up. "Toadstools are poisonous mushrooms," she simply declared. She shot Kurumi Hollingberry an unamused glance as her hand lowered.

Orla 09-09-2011 02:23 PM

Luna raised her hand ''Toadstools are similer to mushrooms but poisonous... They are also fungi'' Why were the doing muggle plants???

It could be a step to talking about leaping mushrooms which were pretty much the same they just jumped and stuff like that

Siriusly Moony 09-09-2011 02:24 PM

Danae Zoto was a bit nervous for this class because some of the plants kinda freaked her out. But she needed to do well in it so she could know more about what plants could save a person's life when she was a Healer. DEEEEEP breathes.

Having sat down in a spot where there was less chatter, she looked around at the other students and then up as the teacher came in.

'What are toadstools.' it seemed like an easy enough question.

Danae raised her hand, and stated, "Hello Professor. I'm Danae." she left off the last name as per usual because almost everyone who knew Quidditch knew her brother for their shared last name. "I would define a toadstool as a poisonous mushroom having a stalk with an umbrellalike cap."

Teheheehee.

Very seldom did Ellie like being referred to by her last name. Yet somehow, with the 'Captain' in front of it, it sounded so nice. Heh.

She still had to pay the Herbology Professor a personal visit. Soon.

There was a sarcastic cheering in her head at the mention of the toadstools. They truly sounded like anything but fun, though. Ellie did notice that Spike was present, though, which was very good news. If they were allowed partners, she was SO claiming him. He'd do all the dirty work for her, she bet. He liked dirt and stuff anyway.

And a toadstool? "It's a plant." People just loved overlooking the simplicity of questions, didn't they? Sigh.

pinkphoenix 09-09-2011 02:30 PM

what are toadstools? Orr looked at the few that were in the room with them and saw that their shape resumed a mushroom.

She raised her hand and when it came her turn, she said, "Hello Prof. My name is Orr and could toadstool possibly be a magical version of a mushroom and be poisonous?"

Sitting by the sea on a comfy beach chair, listening to the waves. Nessie took a sip from her cold drink. She closed her eyes and absorbed all the sun she could get. She was sourounded by a tropical island with beautiful trees and plants all over. This was the perfect paradise except she could smell something a little wierd, something a bit like fungi. Trying to get rid of the smell she turned onto her side.

>____<

Nessie fell of her stool as she woke from her day dream. This was embarressing she must have looked like such a retard. She could feel her cheeks they had gone bright red probably as red as her ginge hair. Slowly getting up she caught the last sentence the Professor had said, it was something about introducing themselves. When she was up back in her seat she noticed the blackboard had a question written on it. Guessing they had to answer the question the Hufflepuff raised her hand and waited her turn. "Professor, I'm Renesmee Dixon" she thought the Professor knew who she was, but just incase she introduced herself again. Now onto the question. A Toadstool??? She knew she had read about them before. "I think Toadstools are magical mushrooms" she remembered as she saw the mushrooms that were opposite the stools they we're sitting on. She didn't see them before, but now that she did she felt stupid for not seeing them before. She yawned, she was exhausted and she didn't get much sleep the night before.

Elise looked up at the professor. She seemed nice.

A toadstool? Err.. mushroom? Raising her hand, she answered the question. "People usually, but not always use the word toadstool to describe poisonous mushrooms or the ones that look like umbrellas." she said, "They're also known as Frogge Stools." Cause that's what her mom used to call them... Before she died...

Simon looked at the Professor and smiled. "I'm your worst nightmare Professor Bentley, well that's what most people say to me anyway and I don't know why." Simon honestly didn't though he had a feeling he should do. "Is it a plant that makes toads?"

bone_baud10 09-09-2011 02:35 PM

Ohhhh!!! Ohhh!!! She knew the answer. She learned toadstools in America, in her boring normal Herbology classroom. Her first question in Hogwarts, and she already knew the answer. YAY!

Just before raising her hand, the professor wanted the students to introduce themselves. Ughh... Joanna hated introducing herself, it made her blush and feel stupid. Should she mention that she's from America?, or is that too much information. Hesitating, she raised her hand to the level of her eyes, feeling awkward, . "Oh Joanna your making a fool out of yourself," the Ravenclaw thought to herself, raising her hand a bit higher and took a deep breathe, filling herself with confidence. "Joanna you are a proud American from Alaska, they can live with it" she thought to herself raising her hand even higher.

"I'm Joanna," the girl said, the fact that she had a different accent (American accent) made her feel even more awkward, but she can live with the shame, "and toadstools are a type of fungi, mushroom, and they're extremely poisonous."

Herbology wasn't one subject Kimalia looked forward to. It meant her actually getting her hands dirty in the dirt. She recognized some basic plants, but that's about it, the rest she had to require a textbook to tell her. Raising her hand, "A toadstool is a fungi... a poisonous one, unlike the regular mushroom."

Half_BloodPrincess 09-09-2011 02:55 PM

For once, Lysandra was actually looking forward to a class. Herbology was one of her favorite classes. When the Professor asked them what is a toadstool, her hand flew to the air. She actually knew this one. I'm Lysandra, and a toadstool is a poisonous type of fungi and it is inedible she answered

Oh goodie! The lesson had started, and they were working with... toadstools? Well that didn't seem too dangerous. But this was herbology, and the most safe sounding plants could be killer.
"A toadstool is simply a mushroom." she said raising her hand. "Though toadstools may refer to all poisonous versions of mushrooms, while mushrooms are not poisonous." Ha! That sounded so text book. Well she had memorised it from one. She was such a nerd...

elllla_Wtwins 09-09-2011 03:16 PM

Toadstools. Hm. Raising her hand slowly into the air, Thea chewed her bottom lip. 'A magical mushroom.. but some are poinonous and there are different varieties such as leaping toodstools.' Smiling slightly, she put her hand back onto the desk.
Thea liked Herbology.. she didn't know why.. Usually she depsised anything slimy and dirty.
At that same moment, she began examining her own nails while the professor went round the rest of the classes' answers.

Marilyn raised her hand after looking around. She was aware of Evelyn's continued glare but they were in class at the moment and the blonde's main focus was NOT getting more points taken away. She never wanted that to happen again...

Why was it so cold!?

Daphne shivered a little as the professor started talking about toadstools. Hm. She'd heard of them before, hadn't she? But..she didn't remember much..bleh.

Daphne raised her hand hesitantly and said, "Um. A Toadstool is a poisonous mushroom that has an umbrella shaped cap.." And, that's all she knew.

Oh! She had to introduce herself.

"..and I'm Daphne Green, a sixth year Hufflepuff." She continued, with a small smile.

Oooh. Yey the lesson was starting. Herbology. Spike had told her tons about this, so Indiana was really looking forward to this lesson. The first year practically beamed at the professor as she sat near the front of the class. This was going to be such a cool lesson. Ooh. She wouldn't know her name, she was a first year after all. "Hii..." She giggled a little. Oh she was happy. "I'm Indiana Hutchinson...and I'm a Ravenclaw." She nodded with a smile. The best house ever totally. Now onto the main question. What was a toadstool? Indy mused with a smile. She thought....she knew that they were.

She stuck her hand in the air, and smiled. "Don't these little blue people called smurfs live in toadstools?" She mused with a big smile. She hoped so anyway. Apart from that....she had no idea what one was.

Daniel smirked, "A toadstool is a mushroom that has a umbrella-like-cap and stem. But unlike what others have said, it is not always poisonous. Sometimes not always." What is a toadstool?

Freya raised her hand "Freya Salvatore. Slytherin." she said before continue with her answer "Its a mushroom, professor." Duh! "Poisonous mushrooms to be exact and it has that umbrella-like cap-and-stem form." Well, that's all she knew about toadstool.

The Slytherin pulled her robes a little tighter. Was it just her or the greenhouse felt colder than the other greenhouse?

Presley Black 09-09-2011 04:20 PM

A toadstool? That was an easy question. Thankful for a summer filled with study, Presley's hand shot up. "It's a type of fungus, professor Bentley. Usually similar to a mushroom. But it is separated from the common mushroom by it's magical qualities. They tend to grow in groups of two or three, but the most magical is when you find them growing in a perfect circle." What else? Presley realized she hadn't said what they did yet, but to be honest, she couldn't remember! "Er," Presley continued, inmmediatley cursing herself for that stupid two letter word that let on she didn't know any more. "They are used in many potions." There, at least a little bit of recovery. And another book to add to her growing "to-read" stack.

Lissy Longbottom 09-09-2011 04:23 PM

Mushrooms? Well...ok then. Maybe this lesson wouldn't be all that bad. He wasn't a fan of things like Venomous Tentacula but he was sure something simple like a mushroom wouldn't involve him getting his hands too dirty.

He raised his hand into the air to answer. "Toadstool is just a fancy name for a mushroom, I believe," he explained. That's what they always called mushrooms in fairytales to make them sound more...magical and whimsical.

Spike couldn't help but check on Indy at the front of the class. He was well located in the middle of the class, as per usual. He liked Herbology, but the middle of the class was as far forward as he was willing to come.

He rolled his eyes at Indy's giggle as she introduced herself. Cringe. She was probably kicking her feet against the legs of her chair excitedly too. Didn't she know this was a lesson? It might be one of the more interesting ones, but still. And then it got worse...

Seriously. The Smurfs? She brought up the Smurfs?

*HEADDESK*

He started sliding down his chair, hiding under his curly hair. She sooooo wasn't related to him right now. Nope.

"Morning Kurumi dear," she replied, not surprised to see that the Gryffindor Prefect was the first to class. "Mmm something like that," she added with a wink.

"Morning," nodded Seren smiling brightly as Isabelle joined them. "I'm very well thank you, and youself?"

"Morning dear," she welcomed.

"Good morning," she replied, smiling brightly.

Oohh it was so good to see students smiling brightly! "Morning," she replied with a nod of her head, and an equally bright smile to match.

She could see the young girls hair bouncing between the crowd, but within seconds it had diappeared. Where did Harlow go? ... her question was met by the girls voice as she felt something or -- a certain little someone squeeze her legs. "Hello Harlow, looking forward to your first herbology lesson?" She grinned, of course the girl was excited, that much was clear.

"Morning Aurora," greeted Bentley as the girl practically skipped into class. "Oh he's coming along nicely."
She noticed the Slytherins eyes travel to the toadstools and light up. Yes she was rather fond of them too.

"Morning Eino," replied Seren, smiling at one of her many talented students. Huh? Was this hug a professor day? ... she had not been expecting the Ravenclaw to hug her. But the gesture was sweet enough.

"Morning Vashti," she said smiling at the slightly worried looking Ravenclaw.

No greeting? ... how sad.
"Good morning."

"Morning Ivory,"
greeted Seren as the Ravenclaw Prefect made an appearance. Oh and what was this? Jokes too. She laughed lightly, "That's a good one."

"Good morning Captain Stone," she replied, offering the Quidditch Captain a wink. This was going to be a very good year, or at least, she hoped it would be. She thought particularly highly of talented Ravenclaw.

Another student with no greeting? ... how rude.
"Good morning," she greeted regardless.

"Morning Maddy, such a pleasure to meet you and welcome, I do hope you enjoy todays lesson."
Now that was polite, she made a mental note for later reference.

Another... non-greeting student.

"Morning,"
she nodded.

"Hello William," such a friendly Gryffindor. "Well I hope you enjoy it as much as last term," she added with a wink.

No greeting? How rude.

"Morning."

"Morning dear,"
she greeted in return, "Oh I certainly did, and how about yourself? Did you do anything exciting?"

Tut tut... all these students not greeting their professor? Seren hoped they would learn some manners.

"Morning."

"Morning dear," she greeted. She couldn't help but notice that the boy seemed a little uncomfortable... oh well?

"Good morning dear." Well at least someone had the mind to be excited! And rightfully so... Seren had a cracker lesson set up.

No greeting... now this was getting tiring.

"Morning."

"Morning Presley," greeted Seren cheerfully. Presley was a good student, always minding her manners. "It's going well... not yet but I'm working on it," she added with a wink. She'd have more time after today's lesson.

"Morning dear," she greeted smiling brightly.

"Morning Salander," Seren greeted the Head Boy. She couldn't help but notice he appreciated her choice of toadstools.

No greeting?... Rude students.

"Morning."

Perhaps if she greeted enough of them they will learn their manners for next time.

"Tori, so good to see you," greeted Seren, smiling brightly at the Slytherin. "Oh Cricket is looking lovely, thank you."

Slytherins being sneaking and slythering into class? Without greeting their professor?

"Morning Marilyn," she said smiling nonetheless.

Another rude student.

"Morning."

... perhaps she should give up?

"Good morning dear,"
she smiled at the polite Ravenclaw.

"Good Morning Evelyn," she replied giving the Head Girl a smile and a nod of the head.

"Hello dear," Seren replied cheerfully.

Well this was a little disheartening.

"Morning."

"Morning Caroline, I'm very well thanks, and how are you today?" She couldn't help but smile at the Slytherins enthusiasm about toadstools. Nice to know they were appreciated.

"Morning dear," she greeted, nodding her head respectfully. Lovely manners.

"Morning dear," she replied, noticing the boy didn't seem too thrilled about the prospects of toadstools. Oh he was in for a treat! He just didn't know it yet.

"Hello dear," she greeted brightly.

Now what a lovely example of such good manners. See now this was how you were supposed to greet your professors.
"Morning Miss Simmons, it's a pleasure to meet you. I do hope you enjoy your time here at Hogwarts, I assure you there's never a dull moment."
And that was a promise. When were things ever normal and uneventful at Hogwarts?

Oohhh now he was enthusiastic!
"Hello dear, I hope you do too." She gave him a small wink. She thought the lesson would be fun. Then again she found watching grass grow amusing.

"Morning dear," she greeted the Slytherin brightly.

"Good morning." Seren watched the girl's facial expressions change as she noticed the toadstools. She wasn't impressed? How sad.

"Good morning Janice, had a good summer?"

"Morning Destiny, welcome back." It was nice to see bright familiar faces return.

"Good morning dear," she greeted, noticing the girl seemed to be... nervous? about toadstools.

"Morning Hugo," Seren greeted the young Ravenclaw.

"Morning dear," she greeted, smiling brightly.

"Hello dear," she welcomed returning the girls smile.

"Morning dear,"
welcomed Seren, noticing the poor girl looked tired. No matter soon she would be too excited to be tired.

Ahh another bright happy new face. Brilliant!
"Morning dear," she replied smiling just as brightly as the young Gryffindor. "Of course you can get dirty, I highly encourage this." Herbology without a little bit of dirt wasn't really herbology.

"Good morning dear," she greeted smiling at the young Ravenclaw.

No greeting for the professor but plenty of greetings for friends? ...

Rude.

"Morning."

"Good morning Emily," she greeted, watching as the Gryffindor took a seat.

No greeting?

"Morning."

"Good morning Stella, how are things going? Are you all settled in now?"

Being new was always a little strange. She hoped the young Ravenclaw was fitting in without much difficulty.

No greeting for the professor?

"Morning."

Ahhh a student with manners!
"Good morning dear," she replied offering the girl s bright smile.

"Good mroning dear," she greeted, smiling at the young Gryffindor. "My summer was wondeful, thank you for asking. Did you get up to anything exciting?"

No greeting? How sad. Though Seren did feel a little guilty, and she couldn't help but smile as she noticed the girl wearing her hat. At least she followed rules? Right?

"Good morning Kourtney, welcome to herbology."

"Morning dear," she greeted brightly.

"It's a pleasure to meet you MJ,"
replied Seren, thrilled that some students still knew what manners were. "I hope you enjoy todays lesson."

Seren peeked out the door... there were always those few that lagged behind. She flipped open her pendant watch and examined the time. She's wait a few more minutes before starting the lesson.

OOC: Thanks everyone for coming!and making me reply to 3pages of student greeting. The lesson will officially begin in approx 4-5 hours.

" Glad, I am sure your lessons will be the best" William told the profesor.

"Morning Cassie, sp gload you could make it," she greeted smiling at the feisty Hufflepuff.

"Morning dear," smiled Seren.

"It's a pleasure to meet you Nathan, I hope you enjoy todays lesson." ... lovely manners! This made Seren rather happy.

"So nice to meet you to join us Everett, I hope you're enjoying your time at Hogwarts so far," smiled Seren. Must be a transfer. How exciting!

Oohhh dear, looks like somebody thought they were running late. Seren smiled warmly, "No not yet, take a seat, the lesson will start shortly."

"Morning dear,"
she smiled at the young Ravenclaw.

"Well it's a pleasure to meet you Beatrice, I trust your enjoying your time at Hogwarts so far." She remembered what it was like bing a first year. It was the most exciting and the most nerve wracking time of her life!
"I hope you enjoy today's lesson, I've got a special treat for you all."

"Good morning dear,"
she welcomed the second year Gryffindor.

"Morning Erin,"
she greeted giving the Ravenclaw an encouraging wink.

"Good morning dear," replied Seren smiling brightly as the student introduced herself. "It's a pleasure to meet you. I hope you enjoy todays lesson!"

New students were so exciting!

"Good morning dear," she greeted as the Ravenclaw took her seat amongst the group.

Another bright enthusiastic student! Now this is what Seren loved to see!
"Good morning," she replid smiling brightly and giving the young Ravenclaw a nod of the head.

"Morning Isobel," she greeted the Hufflepuff Captain, such a lovely girl, good head on her shoulders. "Oh it was very nice thank you, and how was yours?"

No greeting? Ugh.

"Morning."

"Good morning Penny," she greeted brightly, offering the Hufflepuff a friendly smile.

"Nice to see you too Aiden," she replied giving the young Slytherin a smile.

"Good morning," replied Seren, giving the student a nod of the head.

"Good morning dear," she replied with a smile.

Checking her pendant watch again she figured she should get the class started. After closing the door to the greenhouse she walked to the front of the.... well in front of the area where the students were crowded on their stools.

OOC: The lesson has officially started. DO NOT from this point onward- announce yourself entering the greenhouse. If you have not already posted, pretend as if your character has been here all along. Also from this point onward DO NOT edit your answers or your posts, I will know if you have *eyes you*

"William raised his hand. " Toadstools are poisinous mushrooms' William told the professor. " " They ccome out arter the rain" William said to the professor. " You should never go mushroom hunting unless you know which type of mushrooms to eat" William explained to the professor. " I live in Italy and my grandfather could pick mushrooms and tell the toadstools from regular mushrooms " William told her " Oh, yes, my name is William Starr" he smiled.

He shifted in his seat as the Professor started the class. What are toadstools? With a twinkle in his eye, he glanced at the specimen opposite him and replied "Mushrooms Professah. Said to be poisonous mushrooms but it aint if you know how to prep it for eating and... other medicinal uses." Smiiiirk.

Seren smiled to herself as she watched a little Gryffindor slip through greenhouse doors just as she was about to begin. She would make an exception for this one. Little firsties often got lost.

Raising his hand slowly in the air. "Toadstools are...mushrooms right?" He eyed the red and white toadstool as he lowered his hand back down.

“Yes... and no...” she replied. There was more to them than that. But it was a start.

That way, she was still sitting behind Carter and Caroline, but she was sitting right in the middle. A perfect view.

Toadstools.

Well.. she didn't want to give away the most obvious answer and point to the ones that were all around the Greenhouse. So, she raised her hand high. "Professor! Toadstool is the name of a Princess!" Yup, Bentley just had to ask all the muggleborns in the class. Destiny was sure they would know.

The name of a Princess? Not of any Princess she’d heard of before. “Herbologically dear,” she added, smiling at the poor confused she-snake.

“Very good, very good,” replied Seren happily.

Seren nodded, “Couldn’t have put it better myself.”

"A toadstool is a fungus and or type of mushroom," he answered not giving his name for surely she knew it from last term. "It can he harmful to touch and poisononous."

“Good answer, are they all harmful though?” Perhaps he needed to think about it more. Or read a book. But luckily he had this class.

What in the name of.... was going on? Peach Toadstool? Did Floreans have a new flavour she wasn’t aware of? Shrugging it off, she listened to the boys proper answer.
“Yes indeed that’s absolutely correct. Whilst they are often poisonous, it is not always the case.” And this was an important distinction to make. She hoped everybody else was listening.

“There’s a lot more than thirty dear, particularly in the wild, we can never be certain of how many species there are.” But she did have a very good point. “Yes most are poisonous and not suitable for ingestion, but they are frequently used in potions and as you said, healing potions in particular.”

A toadstool? Well, a toadstool was just a toadstool. Or... A mushroom? Hugo raised his hand. "I think a toadstool is a mushroom, but I think the term is mostly used for dangerous or poisonous mushrooms." Right?

”Correct... the key point is they are not always poisonous, just predominantly.”

A good concise answer, yet no mention of cautions. “Yes very good.”

"As others have said, toadstools are a type of fungi and don't actually have to be poisonous. They are usually characterised by the stalk and cap shape. What's funky about them is underground they help decay dead and rotten plants, and return those nutrients to the soil to help new plants grow."

Noticing Sierra seemed a little put out with Kurumi, she decided she would keep an eye on the two of them for the remainder of the lesson. She hoped there wasn’t any bullying going on.

She didn't see them before, but now that she did she felt stupid for not seeing them before. She yawned, she was exhausted and she didn't get much sleep the night before.

“Close,” said Seren in an encouraging tone. “There are many varieties of magical toadstools, of which we will look at a couple, but there are also mundane... or muggle, varieties as well.”

Oohhh a transfer! Hearing the American accent Seren couldn’t help but feel a little excited.

“They’re usually poisonous, but not always.” But she was mostly right in her answer.

Seren nodded...
It seemed that the general consensus was that they were all poisonous. But they weren’t.
“They’re not all poisonous... just most of them,” she said with a smile.

Another one...
Seren nodded, “They are usually poisonous... not always though.”

"A toadstool is simply a mushroom." she said raising her hand. "Though toadstools may refer to all poisonous versions of mushrooms, while mushrooms are not poisonous." Ha! That sounded so text book. Well she had memorised it from one. She was such a nerd...

“Yes there is that distinction, though it’s important to recognise that not all toadstools are poisonous.”

Toadstools.

A simple yet concise answer. “Very good, but they’re not all magical.”

O.o

"Toadstools are mushroom-like fungi that was either poisonous or otherwise inedible." Yea, everyone was answering...but she'd, once again, felt compelled.

“Very good.” Seren nodded.

Brr.

“Very good, but remember they are not always poisonous.” Seren offered Daphne a smile. Poor girl wuld warm up soon enough.

Smurf? What in the name of Merlins tighty whitey’s was she on about? Seren blinked a few times trying to process this information. Smurfs?

“Um... pixies? Fairies?... they often enjoy habituating areas where toadstools are present... I’m not familiar with this smurf you speak of though.”

He then answered the professors question, he put his hand up "My name is Harvey, they look like mushrooms to me professor." he answered, him being muggleborn he didnt know what they were except that they looked like mushrooms. He then sat back down and smiled at Minerva, Harvey then turned his attention to the professor again to see what she was saying.

“Yes, they are very similar to mushrooms, but there are a number of differences...” perhaps he would think on it some more.

“Yes you’re absolutely right,” she said, pleased that he understood they weren’t all poisonous. A very important distinction.

The Slytherin pulled her robes a little tighter. Was it just her or the greenhouse felt colder than the other greenhouse?

A mushroom... yes and no... Seren nodded and shook her head. “They’re not always poisonous, but this is mostly the case.”

“Very good, just remember there are both magical and mundane varieties of toadstools, they’re not exclusively magic.” But otherwise a brilliant answer. She gave Presley an encouraging smile.

He raised his hand into the air to answer. "Toadstool is just a fancy name for a mushroom, I believe," he explained. That's what they always called mushrooms in fairytales to make them sound more...magical and whimsical.

She couldn’t help it, she thought that was rather amusing, and smiled brightly, biting her tongue so she wouldn’t giggle. “Yes and no, toadstools possess many characteristics that mushrooms do not, they are not one and the same.” But she could see how some people would think so.

She grinned, of course the girl was excited, that much was clear.

Seren peeked out the door... there were always those few that lagged behind. She flipped open her pendant watch and examined the time. She's wait a few more minutes before starting the lesson.

Checking her pendant watch again she figured she should get the class started. After closing the door to the greenhouse she walked to the front of the.... well in front of the area where the students were crowded on their stools.

Harlow grinned, "Yes ma'am I've been up since six this morning." she told her. She sat down and finally got a look at the toadstools lined up along the wall. Her eyes got big and round. Her mother never let her work with toadstools before.

She raised her hand to answer the question, "They're really bad mushrooms that you shouldn't eat, but they can be used in some potions for healing." she said.

Having not taken notes in this class, ever, Evelyn only stared at the board as the list pertaining to what a toadstool is was written. She did not, however, know that they were frequently mentioned in muggle folklore. And what the heck was a Smerth? Smerth, right?

Blinking, she had to stand up a little to look at the mushrooms that she had failed to notice when she walked into the classroom earlier. They looked ordinary to her. Then again, was there anything ordinary that they were taught during lessons? "Perhaps...biting toadstools, Professor?"

She wasn't going to be the one to find out.

FireboltAvis88 09-09-2011 05:37 PM

"What are toadstools?"

Alyssa knew what toadstools were? She had some in her backyard...or at least a variation of it.

She put up her hand and when Professor Bentley nodded for her to speak, she stood up and replied,"My name is Alyssa Potter, Professor, and the answer to your question is a toadstool is the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus, that has a classic umbrella-like cap-and-stem form. It is a popular but undefined term for a mushroom, and unlike some mushrooms that can be eaten, toadstoods are believed to be unedible and poisonous."

Alyssa hoped that her answer was correct.

Starbreeze 09-09-2011 05:39 PM

After writing down all of the attributes of a toadstool, Eino listened to Professor Bentley's further explanation. He hadn't really worked with a lot of toadstools before, because his grandparents rarely used them in their potions. He usually just used the parts that had previously been collected or imported. They weren't very popular in Finland, especially not the area Eino lived, and the Soumi weather made it challenging to grow them in a garden. Nonetheless, he had read about them, and was very excited to actually work with them for once. Eino raised his hand. "Are those Biting Toadstools? As the name suggests, they bite, but they aren't particularly dangerous."

Destiny 09-09-2011 05:42 PM

SEE!?

Destiny wasn't the only person in the class that knew about the Princess Toadstool! She gave the boy two thumbs way up at his comment, but had no idea she was in Forks Magazine. She could understand why she'd be in there, though. With a name like Peach Toadstool and all. Food.

But.. apparently that was not the answer the Professor was looking for.

Frowning slightly, trying to pronounce the word herbologically in her head, she began copying the list off the board. Of course she put the name of a Princess on her list. She had given the answer, it was right. She shot another glance at that boy.. he should write it down, too.

She pushed her parchment away from her once she was finished writing, and turned her attention to the Professor. Who was showing off her toadstools. Bwaha.

"Are they leaping toadstools?" Because everyone else said biting. And Destiny Shepard had to be different.

Daphne removed a parchment from her bag and started noting down all the points written on the blackboard.

Okay, done.

Huh. What? Identify a toadstool?

Daphne looked at the weird looking toadstool for a a couple of minutes or so..which was a complete waste of time. "Are they leaping toadstools?" 'Cause that was the only one she'd heard of. Yeah, there was a 99.99% chance she was wrong but she didn't want to not say anything. That would be stupid, right?

This teacher didn't know what a Smurf is. Oh my day. "You don't know what a smurf is?" Indiana was in a bit of a shock. Smurfs were totally cool. She had one at home, a toy of course, but she had left him at home. "They are these little blue people, who are three apples tall. They live in this little village, in toadstools, which is really cool. And they eat these berries, which they call smurfberries. They are really cool. They are in a book I've got....I can show you it if you want." Indiana smiled as she opened up her text book, so she could look up toadstools. She figured that this lesson wasn't going to just be about smurfs, and why they live in toadstools. Woah. Maybe she could go find a smurf later.

But back to the quesiton. Indiana looked up at the toadstool. She had no idea what it was, but hmm. She looked back at the textbook. It would be in here right. Sticking her nose into the book, she tried to find a image, or some text that described the toadstool that the teacher had showed them. "Is it a leaping toadstool?"

As the answer appeared on the blackboard, Kynthia took notes as quickly as she could. She had yet to get accustomed to writing with a quill, so that took a while. As she was writing she looked at the toadstools before her and tried to identify them. Hmmm reddish brown with a white stem... Did my brother's book have those? Well even if it had, time had passed since she last read that book and keeping information in her head for that long was never somehting she could do. I think I'm not going to give an answer this time. I'll just hear what others have to say and keep notes. She tought giving up trying to remember. She looked around the classroom trying to spot any familiar faces but found none. I really need to socialize more! She thought.

Deezerz 09-09-2011 06:00 PM

Kennedy's head turned as every speaker spoke. He wanted to make sure he understood everything. The first thing that came to his mind when the professor mentioned toadstool was the princess in his very ancient Mario Kart game. If that was to be the lesson of they day then he would come out with highest marks. Oh yes he would, but as class moved on it turned out it wasn't, it was about some mushroom thing. Those were bad, really bad. Poisonous or not, Kennedy would stay away from them.

He thought of the question. What kind of toadstool did the professor have, hmm? He pushed his glasses back and crossed his arms in thought. What were those icky things?

Hmmm.....???

He had no idea. He simply didn't. Gah! He knew he was going to do horrible in Herbology. He was going to have to hit the books after class.

MadAlice 09-09-2011 06:03 PM

Violet looked at the strange toadstools. Merlin, she wished she had paid more attention to her governess when they were walking through the gardens at home. The only toadstool she knew the name of was the Fly Agaric, but that ought to have white spots on the cap, shouldn't it?

Enigma 09-09-2011 06:03 PM

"Hello professor, I'm Ira Wilson." Ira answered the professor.
She didn't know what toadstools were and neither knew the types..However she did religiously copy down her notes and waited for others to answer.
Most of them had said that these were kind of biting toadstools so why not she? Its better to stay with the majority, right?
"I also think that these are a kind of biting toadstools, professor." Maybe she was wrong, but who cares! Atleast she did not! She hated plants!

luna-p 09-09-2011 06:10 PM

Okay, this one was going to be difficult. Ashley really wanted to have an answer, because he figured it would be better to try than not, even if he was wrong. But he couldn't even come up with a wrong answer for this one. He took down the notes, partially because it was good to take notes, and partially to give himself some time to think about it, glancing up at the toadstools from time to time. But he still couldn't come up with anything. As the only ones that did eventually come to mind had been said by pretty much everyone else, he pulled out his book and decided to search through it.

Siriusly Moony 09-09-2011 06:11 PM

Danae smiled when she was one of the people who successfully identified what a toadstool was. It was quite exciting to be right, and she liked to be all the time. Taking out her favourite peacock quill, the Ravenclaw began to take notes as Professor Bentley spoke about the specimens before them.

'How interesting that they are in sweets we enjoy.' she thought, dipping her quill into the ink pot.

Listening to the other students, they were talking about whether it was a leaping toadstool or not. It certainly could be, but there was one that she hadn't hear anyone say yet.

"Professor? Is it a Talking Toadstool?" she asked, her hand raised high so that the professor would be able to see her.

Orla 09-09-2011 06:14 PM

Luna thought she knew the answer either biting toadstools, talking toadstools or leaping toadstools hmmm?

She raised her hand ''Proffeser is it either a leaping toadstool or a biting toadstool!'' Or neither she told her self I don't think it's a talking toadstool but then again...... she really had to look up Herbology books again in the liabrary!

dobbys sock 09-09-2011 06:21 PM

Olivia smiled when she got the question at least part right. Must remember that not all toadstools are poisonous. It might just have been one of those tales young children get told so that they don't go eating them when they find some in the woods or fields. There were plenty of those where she lived at home. She copied down the notes on the blackboard onto a piece of parchment before setting her quill down.

She had no idea what type of toadstools they were but it was likely that they would be something that she'd never come across before. Extremely likely. The suggestions of her classmates were Biting and Leaping. Honestly, she'd prefer it if they did turn out to be Leaping Toadstools. Leave the biting to the animals.

SPOILER!!: Herbology Notebook

Lesson 1: Toadstools

What is a Toadstool?
Toadstools are mushroom-like fungi that was either poisonous or otherwise inedible...

"A toadstool is a fungus or a mushroom which is defined firstly by its umbrella shaped cap and thick stem, it is usually considered to be poisonous and thus inedible, but there are a few exceptions to the rule. This is not to say there aren’t other dangers or cautions to be aware of.

Though there are magical and mundane versions of toadstools, the magical variety have the inexplicable ability to lure in magical beasts, particularly pixies, fairies and doxy’s.

They are primarily used in potions- despite their general inedibility and poisonousness. And are frequently used in healing potions. Some varieties have also been known to be used as core ingredients in wizarding confectionary." - Professor Seren Bentley
- Similar to that of a mushroom
- Usually inedible
- Usually poisonous, though not always
- They can be either magical or mundane
- They come in various colours and sizes but are usually characterised by an umbrella shaped cap and a thick stem
- Used in potions / frequently healing potions
- Frequently mentioned in muggle folklore as being magical and are often depicted as being a decorated seat for toads
- Often attract the company of magical beasts such as pixies and fairies.

Marilyn made sure to notate everything, not knowing if this Professor, too, was insane. After finishing, she looked to the toadstools. They vaguely reminded her of a muggle video game she'd seen Anya playing over the summer. Raising her hand again, she answered.

"I believe muggles refer to this toadstool as the Fly Agaric. Leaping Toadstools, though...and if I'm not mistaken, they are deadly poisonous."

Danny Boy 09-09-2011 06:34 PM

Daniel, blinked. How on earth were they supposed to know? They'd just been off for summer! But....wait, what had he read when Barry'd forced him to study? He knew what that was! Daniel raised his hand slowly, he didn't want to look stupid if it was wrong. Not that many knew. "Is that a Fly Agaric miss? But that's not the proper name is it?" Daniel strained his brain. How was he going to pass his exams? "..Is it called Amanita muscaria?"

vijaya 09-09-2011 06:41 PM

Lucy shocked when professor greeted her, before she could. She held her head down, didn't know how to react.
She looked at the room of student, well there were so many of them. Was herbology the next favorite subject to all now? She kept thinking.
Suddenly her mind woke up as she heard the professor asking questions. hmm, what type of toadstool was that? Hmm.. Thinking and staring at the toadstool she finally came to an answer. Lucy raised her hand and said "Professor, this is a leaping toadstool" she said and brought her hand down.

Kimalia stared.. and stared... and started some more. She was completely baffled. It looked like an ordinary toadstool, it didn't seem to have any white spots.. But was it poisonous? Kimalia rose her hand, "It looks like from Galerina, the ones that are found anytime outside winter season." Kimalia was not exactly sure if it was edible or not. "It looks safe to eat, but it's not..?" She said that last part in such a way where it could be taken as an unsure statement. Hopefully she was correct, normally the common rule for most plants are, if it looks safe it probably isn't.

Penny looked at the toadstool for a few minutes before attempting to answer.. Putting her hand in the air she began...

"Professor, Is it a Leaping Toadstool ?- if it is a Leaping Toadstool, then they don't like tight or enclosed spaces.. they get their food from rotting leaves and tree stumps and can grow in most places, like gardens, greenhouses and forests", Penny stopped, taking a breath before adding.."Wizards use them in drinks to give extra energy"

Yawn..Herbology was SO boring.
Scott sat there and let everyone else answer the questions, and if the teacher asked him; he'd improvise.

Standing on her tiptoes, Thea looked long and hard at the mushrooms. 'I know they can be used in some potions..' Thea bit her lip. 'For healing??' Her Mother being a Healer and all, she had been told about things like this. The Gryffindor then moved out of the way as to let the other students around her take a look. 'But I don't kow what it is called, Professor.' She shook her head, smiling.

Before turning away, she quickly sun back round. 'And you can't eat them.. I don't think!' she chirruped.

Nora listened to everything that professor Bentley had explained, even though it almost felt like listening to a completely different language. Herbology was not exactly her best subject, but she'll eventually get better. She, however, raised her hand after the woman's question.

"That's a leaping toadstool. Unless..." She tried to get a better look at the... creepy looking plant!creature or whatever it was. "Unless it has teeth. It would be a biting toadstool then." That was because they looked almost the same, except for the teeth, and how crazy that sounded.

Oh, please be a leaping toadstool.

Emily looked at the toadstools, making sure to stay well back. If they were biting toadstools she didn't want to get near them.
It was just then she realised she really needed to do some more Herbology research. She felt like she didn't know anything.
"Are they leaping toadstools professor?" she asked, taking a mental note to read more Herbology books from the library. She thought she remembered seeing their picture in a book, but she could be wrong. Like she said, she really needed to revise Herbology.

Sarah scribbled in her notebook the definition of a toadstool, trying to gauge if it would matter wether or not she would actually need to remember it. She figured that it would probably at least be important for this lesson, but maybe not for following ones. Eh, maybe there'll be a test.

She listened as the teacher asked another question. She glanced at the mushrooms toadstools, and screwed up her face. She had absolutely no idea. Bah.

Lana jotted down the notes about toadstools as they appeared on the blackboard. Healing potions? That made her think and she raised her hand, "Excuse me professor. If many toadstools are considered poisonous, why are they used in healing potions?

As the professor pointed out some other toadstools, Lana peered over some other students to get a better look. From what the others were saying, she didn't want to know what kind they were. Or not first hand at least.

Lissy Longbottom 09-09-2011 07:44 PM

Alex had no idea what type of mushroom that was. To him, mushrooms were just...mushrooms. Except some were different colors and were poisonous if you ate them. Other than that, they were all the same to him. He raised his hand and thought hard to the pictures he'd seen in his herbology textbook.

"Is that...umm...a leaping toadstool?" he guessed. He only could remember two magical types of mushrooms -- the leaping and the biting ones. He REALLY hoped it wasn't the biting one.

Well, I can tell that it's indeed a toadstool... Nate thought, perplexed. First day and she wanted them identifying toadstools? He nonetheless raised his hand, "Erm, is that a reddish brown one?" he asked, about a hundred percent sure he was blatantly wrong and about eighty percent sure he would be reprimanded for an answer such as his.

Jesifur thought she recognized it raised her hand and ventured, "Is it a Cleopatra cap? Aren't they used in love potions and for make-up?Wait is that reddish brown? On second thought it does look more like a biting toadstool..." she said a bit embarrassed by her first answer.

Victoria took some notes as the professor spoke about toadstool. Those are actually really pretty mushrooms, too bad they're poisoned. "Amanita muscaria?" Victoria suggested hopefully. That is one of the most common toadstools she knows. They are also pretty easy to recgonize. Though Victoria's not positive if that is amanita muscaria or not.

Adam tried to get a better glimpse of what the toadstool looked like.It was redish brown..He thought back to any toadstools he might've seen that color. After listening to his Professor he slowly put his hand up in the air an answered in a more questioning manner,"Is that a leaping toadstool? As it is named,it has found out how to jump..Which,is pretty much explanatory to oneself.."
He was already confused, but hoped that the Professor would shortly explain what type of toadstool it was so that there was no more speculation in the class. It was more of a wondering guess than an answer he had given.

“Who can identify this type of toadstool for me?”

Unable to really respond to Professor Bentley's questions reagrding if she'd settled in, with all the other students filing in and greeting the professor themselves, Stella had settled for a smile and a slight nod, then a bit of relief as the lesson had started. Unsurprisingly, it seemed they were studying toadstools, and she started mentally trying to dec ide what she knew about the ones in the greenhouse while everyone around her had answered the question about what the fungi were generally. All she could think about was Potions class, and that scared her a little. Seeing as that subject in fact was one of her poorer subjects, but she still knew a bit.

As such, she tentatively raised a hand as they were asked to identify the exact toadstools across the room for them. "Like so many others, I'd say it's a leaping toadstool. Generally they can be used as a potion ingredient, among other uses," she said. She hoped it wasn't a biting toadstool, like some of the others had said. She'd rather deal with active plants that physically moved, instead of something that wanted to draw blood. Even if she had her dragon-hide gloves with her.

Nessie sat there taking notes and quickly looking over them. Not fully confident with her answer she was hesitant to speak up but she decided to be brave for once. She raised her hand and answered.
Is it the Amenita toad stool?

James_Potter 09-09-2011 09:38 PM

William sat on his stool, balancing a roll of parchment on his knee as he scribbled notes with his quill. The air was thick with soil and plant life, and they were severely messing with his sinuses. Within minutes of being in class, his nose had completely blocked and his eyes were continuously watery. But what could he do? He just hoped he didn't have a sneezing fit.
As the class progressed, he watched Professor Bentley talk about toadstools. He rummaged in his bag and retrieved the large Herbology textbook. After leaving through the pages, he found two toadstools that could very well be the one the Professor was talking about. Placing the textbook back into his bag, he raised his hand.
"Professor, by looking at the reddish-brown top and the thick, white stem alone, it could very well be either the Leaping Toadstool or the Biting Toadstool" he lowered his hand. From that distance, he could not discern whether or not there were fangs on the toadstool, which, according to the textbook, would distinguish the two. He waited for the Professor to answer the class.

sweetpinkpixie 09-09-2011 09:45 PM

Kurumi fidgeted awkwardly in her seat as Professor Bentley slightly moved to the side and she got a better look at the toadstools. Not, Kurumi was hoping that they would be cute little Leaping Toadstools...the ones the frolicked about the greenhouse but didn't have any sharp teeth that could nibble off fingers or anything.

But...

Professor Bentley had winked at her when class had begun when the forth year had asked about the lesson. She furrowed her brow a bit and looked back at the professor who probably thought Devil's Snare was adorable. "Professor, I believe that those are Biting Toadstools..." she said, trailing off just a bit. Besides, hadn't they covered Leaping Toadstools in a lesson last term? At least, Kurumi had some recollection of that...

Personally, she was hoping they would be Talking Toadstools. She could have a conversation with hers as she replanted it.

Sierra glanced at the toadstool. Reddish brown cap, white stem--it actually could be a few different things. Raising her hand, she said, "It could be a few things, actually. It has a reddish brown cap and a white stem, so...maybe a Leaping Toadstool or a Fly Agaric?" She shrugged as she lowered her hand. That was her best guess. She glanced around the room as she waited for Hollingberry to produce a textbook perfect answer--if she hadn't already. Everybody seemed to be chiming in at once.

Pfft. "Well obviously by the...the..." Wait. Let her try again. "Weeds are like...like..." Blink. "Gosh, Bentley, I don't know." She didn't travel the world looking for flesh eating trees, after all. "How do you tell the difference?" Yes, she turned the question back on the teacher.

Her head turned at the sound of 'Hutchinson' coming from a little girl. Curious. Ellie shot Spike a glance and saw him shrinking down in his seat...

Oh My Merlin! Spike's ickle sister was a firstie!! Awwwww!!

Then Bentley went on about toadstools. Or, Ellie guessed that was what it was about, but she'd tuned most of it out. For all she knew, the Professor could have changed the subject to Venomous Tentacula or something. Whatever it was, it was nothing that caught the interest of the Fifth year.

She also didn't hear the question asked. But was aroused when the students around her began answering. And, judging by their responses, she wouldn't have known the answer had she been listening, anyway.

Tori stared up at the board and squinted at the notes. Ugh. Was she supposed to write those down? She didn't normally take notes but.... since this WAS her favorite subject... the ginger girl sighed deeply and started jotting down whatever was on the board.

While she was writing the notes, she leaned around the professor to get a better look at the toadstool. Um. Hum. What kind of toadstool WAS that? Tori quickly flipped through her book and then raised her hand.

"Is it....um...in the genus of Amanita, professor?" That was a......guess.

Orchid raised her hand already knowing the answer. Always knowing the information was part of the reason why she loved Herbology so much, and she knows the information because she studies everything Herbology related because she loves it so much; it was an on-going cycle really. "Well, Professor, I believe their name in the magical world is the Leaping Toadstool, but in the non-wizarding world they are called Amantia Muscaria, more comingly known as the Fly Agaric or Fly Amantia. Although they are generally considered poisonous, deaths are extremely rare, and it's consumed as a food in parts of Europe, Asia, and North America after partially boiling them of course." She said smiling as she lowered her hand.

SPOILER!!: Melchior's Notes

Lesson 1
What is a toadstool?

- Similar to a mushroom
- Usually inedible
- Usually poisonous – but not in all cases
- They can be either magical or mundane
- They come in various colours and sizes but are usually characterized by an umbrella shaped cap and a thick stem

- Frequently mentioned in muggle folklore as being magical and are often depicted as being a decorated seat for toads
- Often attract the company of magical beasts such as pixies and fairies.

A toadstool with a reddish brown cap and white stem is called a ______________.

This class was very interesting. Toadstools? Melchior had read about mushrooms before, but never anything of the name “toadstool.” He began to study the toadstool in the front of the room, trying to think of a name. He raised his hand.
Is it possibly a leaping toadstool or an amanita muscaria?” he asked.

“Yes... and no...” she replied. There was more to them than that. But it was a start.

The name of a Princess? Not of any Princess she’d heard of before. “Herbologically dear,” she added, smiling at the poor confused she-snake.

“Good answer, but perhaps think on it a little more.” They weren’t all poisonous.

“Very good, very good,” replied Seren happily.

Seren nodded, “Couldn’t have put it better myself.”

“Yes.... in most cases, but not in all.” Seren smiled, was the boy scared?... she hoped not. Things could get awkward otherwise.

Seren suppressed a laugh. She was on the right track at least. “Yes, certainly toads have been known to sit on them.”

“Good answer, are they all harmful though?” Perhaps he needed to think about it more. Or read a book. But luckily he had this class.

“Yes, they certainly can be, but are they always poisonous?” Another student on the right track.

“You’re on the right track, though there are few types of toadstools that are in fact alright to ingest.

Seren’s eyes widened somewhat as she listened to Aurora answer the question. There was no doubt she had done her homework on it. “Yes very good.”

“Yes very good, they are usually poisonous, though there are some exceptions.”

“There’s a lot more than thirty dear, particularly in the wild, we can never be certain of how many species there are.” But she did have a very good point. “Yes most are poisonous and not suitable for ingestion, but they are frequently used in potions and as you said, healing potions in particular.”

Seren nodded encouragingly. “There certainly are magical toadstools, but there are also mundane ones.

”Correct... the key point is they are not always poisonous, just predominantly.”

Ughhh... no answer to the question?

“Keep up dear.”

”Very good Miss Laughgood, but they are not always poisonous, just most of the time.”

A good concise answer, yet no mention of cautions. “Yes very good.”

Interesting outlook. “Yes... but they come in all sorts of shapes, colours and sizes.”

Uh... another student choosing not to answer?

Seren offered Violet a smile. She wouldn’t be forgetting this one, thats for sure.

Seren nodded, smiling brighty- as always. “More or less. They’re not always poisonous but more often than not they are not fit for human consumption.”

“Yes, you’re absolutely right Spike,” she said brightly. Ravenclaw’s, so knowledgeable.

“Yes, absolutely,” she answered nodding, “Though they are usually poisonous but that’s not always the case.”

Noticing Sierra seemed a little put out with Kurumi, she decided she would keep an eye on the two of them for the remainder of the lesson. She hoped there wasn’t any bullying going on.
”Usually poisonous... not always,” she clarified, nodding and smiling in response to the blunt statement.

“Not always poinsonous... just mostly.”

Seren nodded. Most of the students were on the same wave length. “Not always poisonous, just usually.”

Seren couldn’t help but grin. If she thought Sierra’s answer was blunt, Ellie’s was even more so. Very very simplistic. “You’re not wrong there,” she said brightly. “But how do you differentiate a toadstool from a mushroom or from a weed or a tree?.. they’re all plants.”

Firsties, how adorable. “There are magical and mundane varieties of toadstools and while they are usually poisonous this is not always the case... but you’re on the right track.” And this was the point of lessons... learning!

“Close,” said Seren in an encouraging tone. “There are many varieties of magical toadstools, of which we will look at a couple, but there are also mundane... or muggle, varieties as well.”

Yes, that was right. Seren nodded to communicate this before adding, “Though they are usually poisonous, this is not always the case.”

After a quick eyeroll and a shake of the head, Seren offered the Hufflepuff a small smile. “You’re not a nightmare Simon... you’re just different.” Which he was. He was... special in his own way, as was every child. But he wasn’t a menace.

A plant that makes toads?

“No... they’re not.” She gave him a smile. “Be sure to take some notes this lesson,” she added with a wink.

“Yes there is that distinction, though it’s important to recognise that not all toadstools are poisonous.”

A simple yet concise answer. “Very good, but they’re not all magical.”

“Very good.” Seren nodded.

“Very good, but remember they are not always poisonous.” Seren offered Daphne a smile. Poor girl wuld warm up soon enough.

Smurf? What in the name of Merlins tighty whitey’s was she on about? Seren blinked a few times trying to process this information. Smurfs?

“Um... pixies? Fairies?... they often enjoy habituating areas where toadstools are present... I’m not familiar with this smurf you speak of though.”

“Yes, they are very similar to mushrooms, but there are a number of differences...” perhaps he would think on it some more.

Oh brilliant!
“Yes you’re absolutely right,” she said, pleased that he understood they weren’t all poisonous. A very important distinction.

“Very good,” she said nodding at the young Ravenclaw. “Though there are a few varieties which are quite edible.”

She couldn’t help it, she thought that was rather amusing, and smiled brightly, biting her tongue so she wouldn’t giggle. “Yes and no, toadstools possess many characteristics that mushrooms do not, they are not one and the same.” But she could see how some people would think so.

"Yes William, I am familiar with you," she said winking. "Toadstools are not always poisonous, butthink about how you would differentiate these from mushrooms..." as opposed to stating random facts-- which was impressive but irrelevant to the question.

"Said to be... but this is not always the case," she said clarifying, "But you're certainly right, they're often used in healing potions."

Right, notes... for the students’ benefit. Not hers.

With another flick of her wand, answers appeared beneath the question on the board. The smart ones would copy these down. She wasn’t about to baby them into doing it. It was their responsibility.

Allowing the students to mull this information over for a minute, Seren glanced behind her at their special guests... they would get to that soon.

“So now that you’re all aware of what a toadstool is—being a fungus or a mushroom which is defined firstly by its umbrella shaped cap and thick stem, it is usually considered to be poisonous and thus inedible, but there are a few exceptions to the rule. This is not to say there aren’t other dangers or cautions to be aware of.” She let them process this before moving on. “Though there are magical and mundane versions of toadstools, the magical variety have the inexplicable ability to lure in magical beasts, particularly pixies, fairies and doxy’s.”

“They are primarily used in potions- despite their general inedibility and poisonousness. And are frequently used in healing potions. Some varieties have also been known to be used as core ingredients in wizarding confectionary.” Hence why some are indeed edible.

Standing to the side so that some of the students could have a better view of the toadstools before them, Seren turned her head and gave them a fond look. Precious little toadstools they were. With such an amazing reddish brown cap, and white stem... stunning.

Right next question... to keep these students were on their toes.

“Who can identify this type of toadstool for me?”

OOC: I'm off to bed... tis late. Though I am not in the classroom Bentley is. So NO chatting etc.... I'll reply when I wake up, approx 8-9 hours from the time of this post. Thanks!

William eaised his hand to answer." I think I read about this toadstool in the book" William told the professor." Ithink the answer is the " Hated Anemia" William said to the profssor. William hopes this is right.

Seeing her friend, Desiree smiled "Hi-" she was about to reply.. when Professor Bentley addressed the class and she stopped immediately, not wanting to be disrespectful of course. She seemed very sweet, Desiree had a feeling she would like this class, even if she wasn't good at it.

Hmm what was a toadstool, it was like a mushroom or fungi, right. Everyone else answered before she got the chance and Professor Bentley moved on to another question. After writing down all the notes Desiree stared once again at the mushroom, sorry toadstool, in front of her.

It was a pretty reddish brown capped and white stemmed toadstool, yes that is all she could come up with. It looked harmless, but after what the teacher had just explained it was probably terribly poisonous. She scooted back a little in her stool. Just in case..

What was a toadstool? They were a sort of mushroom, which made them a fungus and therefore gross. And evil probably. But that wasn't a very intellectual answer so Vashti had kept her mouth shut. She doubted Professor Bentley would appreciate her calling the plants evil and gross, even if they actually were.

Instead she quietly pulled out her Herbology notebook and quickly jotted down the stuff written on the board. As she did, she briefly glanced up when the professor asked whether anyone could identify those toadstools over there, and Vashti paused in her writing as she heard some of the answers the other students were giving.

Biting toadstools? BITING toadstools?!

Oh dear Merlin, please no.

But some others were suggestion leaping toadstools. Those sounded much better than mushrooms that were capable of biting her fingers off.

Vashti hastily scribbled down the rest of the notes before raising her hand. "Those are leaping toadstools, right?" Please say yes?

Mickey Darley 09-09-2011 11:31 PM

"It looks like an elephant toadstool." Mickey thought out loud, making several pairs of eyes look at her. "What? It's a real thing look it up." She said back to the other students before trying of thinking up their own answers. Mickey raised her hand, "Proffesor, may I make a hypothesis? I can't tell you the name of it, but I suspect based off the color of it that these are specifically used for not so powerful salves." Mickey announced once she had the teachers acknowledgement. "The shade of red is dark so doesn't that mean that it has a lower fatality rate if you eat than most others? Also I would guess that since it's less poisoness that it would boost the immune system a lot less than a more poisoness one." Her face turned bright red. Yup she was wrong. "Or not." She added going back to taking notes.

Josh looked up at the blackboard and stared to copy down what the teacher put on there. *Here we go, lots and lots of notes.*, he thought to himslef. While he was copying he was also listening to the proffesor, *Haha I love mulit-tasking, I don't know what kind of toadstool that was.* He didn't know there was a difference between mushrooms and toadstools.

HazelStone101 09-09-2011 11:48 PM

Jayden had no idea what kind of toadstool that was... but she answered to the best of her ability, and raised her hand. "Professor, is that a poisonous jumping toadstool?"
