Default Astronomy Lesson 1

As you enter the astronomy classroom you'll notice that the room has been re arranged to make room in front of the windows for telescope gazing. The class is held at midnight. The desks are grouped two and two just like in the previous years. On each desk there is a piece of parchment.

Up at the front of the classroom Professor Roslund is sitting in his chair, and is lazily flipping through/ reading the latest issue of the daily prophet. Behind him on the blackboard a message is written.

Quote:
Please write your name, year and house on the parchment. Each parchment is charmed to turn into a name plate when you are finished.

It was too short of a time span if you asked her. Nights were meant for sleeping, which she sort of hoped to do well before dawn.

Ugh, ...did the professor have to go and ruin whatever good mood Sierra had left by mentioning Hollingberry? Instead of rolling her eyes in the presence of Treyen, she decided to focus on practicing the wand movement and incantation they'd just been taught. "...could have used this ten minutes ago," Sierra mumbled, flicking her wand out its holster.

She stared at Treyen as he went over things that confused her from the time he opened his mouth. Then he suggested she try the spell on her telescope, which was more along the lines of what she'd been thinking. Right. Focus the telescope first and then worry about silver objects, bright objects, bronze objects and whatever-objects up in the sky. "Alright then," she said, aiming her wand. She swished her wand and then tapped on the telescope. "Lens Focalis!" She waved Treyen toward it. "What's it look like now?"

It was very noticeable, truth be told, how Sierra's expression changed when Kurumi was mentioned by the Professor. Treyen couldn't possibly comprehend why was it that the Slytherin didn't like the Gryffindor that much, and he KNEW that being in those Houses had nothing to do with it.

A chuckle was let out as Sierra kind of complained about not knowing the spell before. He smiled anyway, "You did a pretty good job adjusting the focus manually, nonetheless," so, really, the spell was not that necessary. It would've saved them a couple minutes, surely, but it's not like the girl next to him spent the entirety of the lesson doing so. All good.

Treyen watched as she performed the spell on her telescope. He'll do with his the next time he took it out, but at the moment...and since he was granted permission to do so...he partnered up with Sierra. Again. Wait, what? That question was for him, right? Right. "What? Mercury?" or the focus? She'd meant the new focus, of course, he knew that. And...also Mercury. "Actually...," he started, and peered through the telescope again, IT did look waaaaay better, "...it looks okay," smirk. But he did notice the one planet on the right, and the bronze looked a bit more like brown. The brighter, brownish-bronze planet...against the silvery, less bright one on the left? The brighter one on the right must be Mercury instead. The Hufflepuff Prefect smiled and left the telescope alone for Sierra's use, "It's the one on the right."

After listening to the professor Minerva thought maybe she didn't find Mercury like she originally thought. "Harvs I think I might have been mistaken." She took out her wand and swished then tapped her telescope saying "lens focalis". Minerva then took another look into her telescope. It was so much clearer. She looked again in the location she was looking at. "No Harvs I think I was right. Professor I'm pretty sure I see Mercury."

She tried to focus the lense. "Lens Focalis." Then she tried to see the Mercury again from her telescope.

"Yeah, I can see it now!" said Raven enthusiast

Jayden was having an extremely hard time finding Mercury when the professor suggested a focusing spell. "Awesome, I'm doing horribly right now, so a little magic can't hurt" She thought to herself. "Lens Focalis!" She said firmly as she tapped her telescope. "Much better."

Jez swished her wand and tapped the telescope. "Lens Focalis!" She pressed her eye to the telescope eyepiece again. Much clearer. Now, to search for that pesky planet ...

A swish and a tap and a lens focalis later... or actually two or three since the first few times it didn't work, Corey had focused the telescope he'd claimed and had it pointed in the direction of the horizon. He stayed quiet though, happy to just go ahead and do his thing without calling for the professor like a lot of the students. He did look pretty pleased with himself though.

Was this professor saying they were going to be staying up here for a few more hours or what? Marie did NOT plan on spending the whole night in the astronomy tower. She had much better things to do like... sleep.

She was going to find this stupid planet now so she could leave soon. Her pillow was calling for her. Dropping her wand into her had she gave it a swish and a tap on the telescope. "Lens Focalis!" If this didn't work she was just going to give up. It's not like she wanted to be an astronomer anyway.

Looking through the telescope she moved it a little at a time until she found something. She didn't know if that was it or not, all she knew was it wasn't the moon she was looking at this time so she was happy.

She was right about the visibility of Mercury. Heh! Maybe she is not that bad at Astronomy after all. After she locates Merak and Dubhe which are two parts Ursa Major, Aiden adjusts her telescope a little norther of Dubhe when she finds a brilliantly bright star. That's the Polaris for sure! She smirks.

The sun will rise anytime soon. She better get things done quicker! Taking her eye off the eyepiece, Aiden withdraws her wand, swishes and taps it on the telescope. "Lens Focalis," she mutters hoping for the spell to work. She doesn't want to waste time practising a spell while knowing the sun will rise soon. With eyes half closed, Aiden takes a peek at the telescope. Nothing has changed on hers. Or maybe is that she is so bloody sleepy? Nevertheless, she doesn't give up on looking for Mercury. Astronomy is good for testing patience.

From the Polaris, she adjusts her telescope slightly to the west. Observing the constellation carefully, Aiden realises she has just located the Cassiopeia constellation. A wide grin spreads across her lips. This means it won't be long till she finds Venus. Aiden adjusts the brass telescope a little souther which focuses on the Alpha Cas. She tilts the the microscope souther, resulting to the locating Andromeda constellation. Next, she adjusts it slightly to south-west where she founds the Great Square of Pegasus. After locating Markab, she tilts the telescope south-west and ther it is; Venus!

Tiffany took out her wand out and tried to the spell that the professor had just said. She hoped that it would really work on her."Lens focalis!"she whispered. Then she looked back into her telescope, of a sudden it has really become clearer. It would be much easier for her to look for Mercury.
She tried to located where the Sun was so as to find Mercury. After a while, she found something silver which was next to the Sun. "Yea, that's Mercury!"Tiffany thought to herself.

"lens focalis!" He looked into his lens and sure enough it was much clearer and he could see what Minnie what talking about.

Eeep ! So that was it ? Then the thing she was looking up at the telescope wasn't Mercury. Hehe. Forgive.

After the Professor had given them the spell required in order to view Mercury, Beatrice practiced the incantations for a while. "Lens Focal-Lens Focalis-Lens Focalis," she muttered silently. Seeing that the other students had already started on applying it, she did the same.

She took out her wand and gave a swish and tap on the telescope as she said the incantation. Bending down, she peaked into it. Okay Mercury, where are you ? And there she saw the silvery one. That was it right ?Next to the sun.

Jory listened as the Professor told them how to identify mercury. Then he tried the focusing spell hoping it would work as he had never tried it before. "Lens focalis!" he muttered swishing his wand and tapping the telescope.

Jory looked through the scope and began keeping an eye out for Mercury.

She'd taken a telescope from the cupboard because she hadn't a clue where hers was. She probably hadn't so much as touched it since her first term. Merlin knew if it was even in her trunk or not. But with the school's telescope, she'd been trying to look at this planet for however long they'd been there. In all honesty, she didn't know exactly what it was she was supposed to be looking for. A dot labeled 'Mercury', maybe? For all she knew, she could have been staring at that same planet all along.

After hearing the Professor's instructions, she swished her wand, tapped her telescope, saying, "Lens Focalis." And tried looking through it again. With, in her opinion, was not much of a different result.

She looked at whoever was scribbling notes beside her. Eino. Her eyes narrowed at him. Could he really have seen that planet already. And WHY wasn't she seeing it?

The fifth year moved even closer to the boy, almost so she was right on top of him, and mimicked his telescope's position with hers. She peered through the eyepiece and saw....much of the same of what she saw before she'd popped his personal space bubble.

Sigh.

"What am I looking for, Eino?" Yes, she was whining. She just wanted to find the stupid planet and go to bed. "Help, please?" Please?

"MERLIN, I SEE VENUS!!" Eino exclaimed when all of the sudden all he could see was RED. Bright red everywhere. It could only be Venus, maybe Mars, but as he put his telescope aside to make note of it, he realized it was neither. Eino noticed someone on top of him right next to him and slowly turned his head around to check whose red hair that belonged to. Ellie. The same hair that lead him to believe he was so close to Venus he was practically on it. "Oh..." he said scratching his notes. No Venus.

At least Eino had seen Mercury, or he thought he did. Ellie still hadn't seen anything. "It's just a little dot." Eino said pointing in the direction he had seen the planet. "It doesn't shine like the rest of the little dots." He went on and looked through his telescope, trying to find the silvery brown dot a second time. "There." He moved away fro his telescope, giving Ellie the chance to see it.

Penny listened intently, removing her wand from its holster and started to practice the wand movement... ***Swish and tap***, ***Swish and tap***.

Happy that she had that down, she practiced the incantation ***lens focalis***, ***len focalis***, ***lens focalis***.

Doubly happy now, she decided to combine the two..... Her wand at the ready, she said the incantation "lens focalis" at the same time moving her wand in the swish and ta movement....

Looking through her telescope, she was amazed at how clear everything was, every dawn star was bright and beautiful....

Taking her wand, Alyssa first practiced the wand movements, swish and tap. Once she was familiar with the movements, she swished and tapped the wand on her telescope and said "lens focalis". She looked through her telescope and everything in the sky looked clearer...and here comes the sun!! The time has passed so fast and dawn was approaching. As the sun started rising in the east, Alyssa waited for about 30 minutes and then making sure that she hadn't moved her telescope from its last position, Alyssa peeked through the lens. There He is! Mercury!! The silver white brownish planet, that she thought she had seen earlier. Right to the east of the Sun. Only it was a lot clearer now.

She leaned over to Penny. "Quick Penny, you don't have much time. Mercury can only be seen thirty minutes right after the sun rises....and it's starting to rise fast. Look east of the Sun and you'll find it."
Penny heard the urgency in Alyssa's voice, trained the telescope onto the Sun and then slowly moved it east.....

"WOW, it's beautiful, it is stunningly beautiful"

Keeping her telescope trained on Mercury, she removed her eye from it, she turned and smiled the brightest smile at Alyssa...."Oh my Godric... it's so pretty"

Louisa stared through the telescope for good five minutes without managing to know which one was this mercury. She even hated everything had mercury in it! With a sigh, she leaned away from the telescope and looked at the closest student sitting nearby.

A young girl. But she was looking intently through her own telescope. Louisa scooted her chair closer and whispered, "Psst! Hey, umm.. do you see it?" The mercury of course. It was a shame if the kid did, she was obviously younger than Louisa.. very younger perhaps. She could be a firstie!

Now if she was a talented firstie who loved stargazing for some weird reason, the fourth year would just adore the kid.

Seriously.

Mercury. Mercury. Is this really you or is this one an asteroid. Beatrice observed the features of the figure magnified in her telescope to determine if it was really the Planet Mercury when someone psst her. She pulled up and looked at the person who spoke.

Eeeep ! It was that Ravenclaw girl from the Great Hall whom she saw having a scene of some kind with an older boy. Yeah, it was her.

Curious. Curious.

Beatrice's curious buds got activated the moment she saw the girl. She wondered what the problem was with her and the boy but-it was class time remember ? Save the personal interrogations after, she told herself.

"I..think. But I'm not sure if it is Mercury." she told her. She didn't know yet, really. Why can't it be find the moon ? "How about you ? Have you seen the Mercury ?" Beatrice asked.

Louisa blinked once when this kid gave her a strange look. The fourth year even considered scooting away again if the kid continued this strange gazing - did she mix stargazing with peoplegazing? Mm?

Oh! She talked at last. Louisa shrugged, "I haven't. Can I see yours?" Forgetting about introduction and any social skills whatsoever. "The professor said it was brown and grey, very small...he mentioned something about Venus and Jupiter too." But Louisa's mind had struck a wall and didn't get that last bit.

Maybe she did?

Remembering a comment that the lion prefect had made he added "It can also help if you look for Jupiter or Venus first and then go from one of them to find Mercury like Miss Hollingberry was just explaining..."

"But yes normally Mercury is only visible for a short while at dawn but this is a wizarding school is it not and here anything is possible with the help of magic, right?"

Taking up his wand Edvard said "To help you focus your magical telescopes i'm going to teach you a focus spell for the lens called lens focalis. The wand movement is a swish and then tap motion on the telescope."

Taking out a telescope from the cupboard he demonstrated the wand movement slowly, showing the swish and then tap on the telescope. "lens focalis!" he said firmly. Turning to adress the student's again he said "Practice the incantion first and then test it out on your telescopes. If you've done it right what you see in your telescopes should be more clear and sharp."

OCC: Practice the new focus charm on your telescopes and see if you can find Mercury now with the help of your telescopes and the information I've provided (at dawn it should be visible right next to the sun or you can do as sweetpinkpixie suggested and look for Jupiter or Venus first before locating Mercury).

Elise pulled out her wand and tried the wand movement alone.

Swish, tap. Swish and tap. Got it. Now the incantation. "Lens Focalis. Lens Fo-Ca-Lis." Okay!

Now for the real thing.

Swish, "Lens Focalis." Tap. Peering into her telescope, she saw a hint of something silverish and brownish. It that it?

But then... HiCCUP! Crap. Hiccup! Hiccup!

"I saw it for a" hiccup. "moment, professor!"

Ellie hated her hiccups.

See mine huh ? But I told you, I'm not sure if that's the one ! "Sure," she replied, nodding twice. Looking at the other students, she realized that almost all of them are also busy with their own stargazing. By two, individually and by group.

She looked back at the girl, "I think Mercury is the silvery one there. Somewhat brownish and white," she suggested. Though she was not entirely certain, maybe if they work together they would be able to locate it.

"What's your name by the way ?" Obviously, the girl had forgot about introductions. So it wasn't that necessary that time but they can really use the names to call each other, right ? Riiggghhhttt ?

Louisa leaned in to look through the girl's telescope as the latter glanced away. The image in this one was so different from Louisa's telescope. The girl managed to focus on a tiny silvery dot which might indeed be Mercury. "I guess you've located it," Louisa said before pulling away from the girl's telescope and moving to hers.

She was working on adjusting it the same way as the younger Ravenclaw when the latter asked about her name. Oh. Right. Names. "Louisa Carter." She flashed a quick sideways smile at her and went back to adjusting her telescope. "You?"

There! The telescope was successfully seated and pointed at the same direction this girl's was. Louisa looked through it and talked, "I guess you're a first year, right? I haven't seen you around the common room before. Nor the dormitories." And yes, Louisa knew almost every girl in the dorms after searching for Ellie's bed.

"Oh! I guess I can see it too!" She pulled away and beamed at the young kid before staring back in.

So that really was Mercury ? That silvery thing there ? Hoorah ! Rejoice time. The focusing charm really did a great job. It really did help in magnifying. At least, she was now done with this activity.

Beezus watched as the girl moved on over to her own telescope and started adjusting it. So her name was Louisa. "Beatrice. But I prefer Beezus," she told her. Oh, she didn't notice Beatrice in the common room or the Dormitories ? Well, mainly because she often hangs out beside the Whomping Willow, not too close though mind you. And she really didn't have the guts to proclaim her existence in the common room. First year syndromes. "Yeah. I'm a first year. How about you ?"

She smiled as Louisa had said that she found Mercury. Well, that certainly did go well enough. "Glad to help," she replied as she looked through her own telescope. Hello Mercury.

"Nice to meet you, Beezus." You have a weird name, Louisa added in her head. She pulled away from her telescope, "I'm in fourth year. And thanks for helping out. If you need anything, you can ask away." Yep! Louisa was going actually to help someone who wasn't close to her, see? She was nice enough. When she wanted.

Louisa pasted her eye onto the telescope again, "It's really tiring and boring to look for planets. But they look beautiful once you find them." She didn't dare change the direction and look for another one. This Mercury could go away!

Well, thank goodness for the spell, Violet thought, because she had been having no luck finding Mercury (although she had gotten a good view of some other objects in the night sky). The description would be of help, too--could've used a little more direction earlier on...

Pulling out her wand, she gave it a swish and tapped her telescope while saying, "Lens Focalis!", then bent to peer into the telescope again, this time pointing it toward the eastern horizon. Yes, this was much clearer! And--oh, wow! Look at that bright, shining thing on dipping down to the lower eastern horizon--she could see now that it didn't sparkle with points of light the same way the stars had, but was more defined-looking--it must be a planet! But she didn't think it looked like the professor had described Mercury--oh, wait, that must be Venus, the morning star!

But Mercury should be somewhere near there--she slowly moved the telescope around and finally, there a little lower down toward the horizon, was a little whitish, brownish, solid-looking dot which she thought (and hoped!) was the planet Mercury. She centered her telescope and observed it for a while in satisfaction.

Aha, there was MAGIC to it! Excellent. Tori knew Astronomy wasn't a total waste of time, even if they were going to be here literally all night.

"Lens focalis!" she commanded, tapping her telescope and then sticking her eye back in. OOH now she could see stuff! Was that the moon? AWESOME. Tori started swiveling her telescope all around, letting out occasional gasps of surprise as she saw awesome stuff.

With his telescope set up, Nikolas tried and tried to find Mercury but it seemed the planet was playing hide and seek. Peering through the eyepiece, he moved the telescope to the right and saw the moon. The big, bright moon but unfortunately he wasn't looking for the moon so he frowned a bit and moved the telescope randomly and hoped to find it that way, he was really bad at spotting planets.

Nikolas heard the professor was talking and giving instructions so he stopped looking for Mercury and turned his attention to the professor. He was teaching a focus charm, which was going to make the image more clear. Taking out his wand from his robes, he was ready to cast the spell. Nikolas did the swish and tap on the telescope "Lens focalis". Done with the focus charm Nikolas put his wand back again in his pockets and peered through the telescope again, this time moving it to the horizon where the professor had said Mercury should be. Hmm...where are you Mercury?. He saw a star and again the moon but no sign of that brownish planet.

He looked away from his telescope for a while and saw as some students have already find it. Oh well, who cares? Maybe he could find another more interesting planet. Looking through his telescope, he saw more stars and interesting space stuff but...what was that? A brownish planet! excited to finally have found Mercury he carefully move the telescope to see the complete planet and....it was awesomee! Officially Astronomy was his favorite class.
