Today's lesson will be hosted by Ministry of Magic employee Caedwyn Howard, who had set up at Shaw's desk with loads of charmed chalk, a pitcher dripping with condensation, and a wrapped platter of cookies.
She paced nervously around the desk, certain that if she'd been given even more time, she would have worn a path from her walking. As it was, her feet were already beginning to ache.
Merlin, what if they were mean? What if they thought the cookies were a silly thing to bring? What if they asked really really hard questions that didn't have answers?

Kurumi passed her box of cookies to the person sitting next to them, not really noticing whoever it was that had sat down next to her, and instead kept her focus on on the woman standing before them. Her eyes sparkled when she introduced herself and explained what her position was. Sure, Kurumi dreamed of doing something with a bit more...flair? Working with dragons sounded fascinating, but so did the sort of work Professor (?) Howard did.
And she was training to become an animagus! That was even more fascinating. Kurumi had managed to sprout cat whiskers the other day, but that was due to an entirely different set of abilities.
Kurumi paused for a moment to think about the question being asked.
"To keep track of those who are capable of turning into animals. There are the negative reasons, such as those who are capable of turning into an animal at will would be more likely to escape wizarding law..." She swallowed for a moment. "I suppose there is also the risk of a witch or wizard being mistaken for a stray cat or dog and being taken in by non-magical people as a pet..."
She sipped on her glass of lemonade and looked around shyly. She wasn't entirely sure where that last bit had come from, but it certainly could be a concern, right?

...a MINISTRY employee. Well THAT tidbit of information put a sour taste in Lexi's mouth. Her experience with MoM employees made her VERY wary of this woman. Crossing her arms across her chest Lexi LOOKED at her for a long moment before raising one hand slightly and saying, "So that all Anamagii can be tracked? Or... perhaps so that the Ministry can keep these witches and wizards under their watchful eye? Oh that is about the same thing isn't it?"
It was clear, Lexi assumed, that she was no fan of the Ministry or any involvement of theirs in HER school. HMPH FOR LIFE.
She wasn't deaf! She heard that. "Saying that I'm not exactly 'hostess' material won't make me give you a cookie any faster." No, Neptune was the last person in the class she was going to get to. Actually, no. She wasn't even going to go around to giving Neptune a cookie. She could get one herself.
Hmph. And while Evelyn was at it, she claimed this desk right here. Away from any pesky Ravenclaws.
Neptune pursed her lips, the Bott-line-of-disapproval making a special appearance just for Evelyn. Neptune hadn't been taking a jab at the VERY jab-worthy Syltherin; she'd just been stating facts. Evelyn wasn't gracious or graceful, or even a little bit kind like a hostess should be. Or a waitress, for that matter. It was just TRUTH.
And see? Not serving Neptune? SEE? Neptune crossed her arms and wore her smug I was right, SEEEE? face.

"Perhaps you'd like to offer your classmates some lemonade? And while you're doing that, we should begin." She waited a moment, hoping everyone was truly settled and snacking and ready for class.
Be gentle?
"My name is Caedwyn Howard, and I am employed at the Ministry of Magic in Magical Law Enforcement. Specifically, I am the Unregistered Animagus Investigator. To preempt any questions... no, I am not an Animagus myself. However, I am currently in training to become one and, aside from a trained Transfiguration academic, I'm probably best able to talk to you about this fascinating topic."
Not to mention she had an 'in' at the school and was always willing to do a favor for Uncle Headmaster. "Now then... some of you may be aware that at the Ministry, we keep a detailed registry of all current Animagii in the country. I'd like to discuss it briefly with you by way of an introduction. Why do you suppose the registry is so important?"
Rookie mistake. Not only did Evelyn lack all the common courtesy a cookie-passer-out should possess, she also lived in a dungeon. Bacteria hands, much? Ew. Neptune wasn't eating a cookie now anyway.
....and Neptune wasn't meant to be on lemonade duty right?? Surely that was a mistake. She was Neptune Bott. Someone that worked at the Ministry should know as much.
Hmph.
Neptune raised her hand. "The registry is sort of meddlesome if you ask me." And she had, so there.

Hear that? The lady...Ms. Howard...said she was perfectly capable being the hostess. And...she was right. Sorta. She'd rather see these cookies gone faster than when she was passing them out.
But, onto more exciting matters, like the start of the class. Only problem was, the Slytherin was going rather slow with passing out the cookies, so she could take notes. At least, the question being asked wasn't really one she'd take notes on.
...Hehe.
But, why was the registry so important? "Because the ministry says so." Seriously.

And just as she was done passing them out, she moved over to Neptune's desk and dropped the plate right in front of her.
Selina rose her hand and answered briefly, "Well I suppose it would have to be because you need to keep track of the people in the Wizarding World who can do something others can't. People with special abilities have an aptitude and ability to work outside the lines of the law. If you know who they are the whole working outside the law thing becomes less probable. You see, they would be on record that they do have the ability to do something dangerous. Also... its a bookkeeping think. Isn't paperwork one of the Ministry's favorite little ditties?"
Lexi had to cover her mouth to keep the giggle from escaping. Looking back at Neptune she smiled in what was CLEARLY approval for her bestie's train of thought. She then nodded her head once in a very haughty little way to show that she thought Neptune was on to something.
Turning back to face the MINISTRY EMPLOYEE she crossed her arms across her chest once more. HMPH, woman. HMPH FOR LIFE.
Eino sat quietly and watched as everyone raised their hands and shared their thoughts. Quite honestly, he hadn't the slightest idea what an animagi was. He thought it was a transfiguration spell, because they were in transfiguration class after all, but besides that he had no idea. He nervously looked from student to student, trying to learn what it was from their opinions, and apparently it involved a person turning into an animal. Wicked. He was going to Animagi Academy after this. No doubt about. He would turn into a dragon that could swim and breathe underwater and walk on the surface of the sun. All at the same time. Well, it didn't seem to be that easy since the Ministry lady couldn't do it and she looked like she had a lot of experience, she looked old. Shaw could probably do it. Shaw could do anything.
Focus, Eino. He returned his attention to his classmates, then at the professor, and tried to write down as many notes as possible during the few pauses. People sure knew a lot about this animagi business. Maybe it was a British thing.
And just as she was done passing them out, she moved over to Neptune's desk and dropped the plate right in front of her.
Dropped.It.Right.In.Front.Of.Her.
Happy? Evelyn was.
Ughhhh.
Because Neptune needed MORE confirmation that she was right. "Excuse you," Neptune haughtily sniffed at Evelyn.
"Madame Howard.......??"
MADAME? SEE? There were crumbs on her desk now!
Neptune had said .... She used the very very tips of her fingers to push the tray as far away as possible, as if rat heads were being served and not cookies.

Despite being Kimalia, she knew on the outside it was Aurora to everyone else's eyes. Her brains were racking out on how Aurora were to act and think and most important speak. She was too caught up in her own thoughts that she almost missed the question.

Forgeting herself, Aurora (Kimalia) rose her hand to answer, "It's important to know who to look out for, it helps keep track on what a person can do and what to expect, like with werewolves only maybe not as dangerous." Aurora definitely wasn't unintelligent, but she wasn't sure if that's how Aurora delivers her answers.

All these ministry workers teaching things they otherwise wouldn't if all was right at Hogwarts, and they never were, was starting to make her head spin. Though she supposed this one wasn't so bad. No sharp objects, and more importantly, no sharp objects being handed to Chicken Girl.
And she had snacks!
Arya had the professor's... Ms. Howard's cookies stacked in front of her along side the little lion's as the lesson began. There wasn't really an answer that the prefect could give that hadn't already been said. She'd agreed with pretty much all of them, including the one about the minsitry being meddling.
They were all a nosy bunch in her opinion. She picked up on of Kurumi's cookies and carefully unwrapped it.

Animagus Theory is something Iris had spent a lot of time reading up on, so she was still definitely going to come to this lesson.
Walking into the classroom in a much more cheerful manner than usual, Iris stopped as she saw a woman stood at the front of the classroom. A pretty woman, at that. "Oh! Hullo, Miss... Where's Shaw? Have they fired him?!" The head girl asked, a litttle TOO enthusiastically. Oh, it'd be FANTASTIC if they had. The man was an imbecile... and liked chainsaws too much. That scared her, a lot.
Remembering the large box in her hands, Iris grinned cheerfully at the woman and opened the box to show dozens of cupcakes. "I saw the notice on the board, saying to bring snacks... so I made these." Iris hoped that she'd made enough for everyone.... if she hadn't, then they could always duplicate the cupcakes...
"No, not fired. Just back to work is all. If you could just pass the cupcakes and have a seat, we've already begun." Closest thing to a chastisement she was capable of.

"Registering when you become an animagi is very important because if anyone could become an animagus without registering, there would be animagus everywhere and there would be no sense of order. Not to mention many criminals could become unregistered animagi. That way they could go on the run as their animal, and the Ministry would have no idea. Also, it helps keep track of all the Wizards and Witches who become animaus. It could give the Ministry an idea and stuff..." That was an acceptable answer, right?
Oh, hooray. Class participation! "Yes, I would say we need the registry to be sure the ability isn't being used by criminals or other ne'er-do-wells to cause harm to others. It wouldn't be precisely true to say there would be animagii running around everywhere. The process is very difficult to master, even for a powerful wizard."

After all that would be a reason for it be under the Department of Law Enforcement as well as Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures.
That was more of a question than an answer, but Cade responded regardless. "Let me turn that around on you. Other than the purely academic pursuit of advanced magic, which is a reason I'm attempting the training, why else would someone study to become an animagus? There are pure reasons, of course, but there are a lot of sneaky ones."

She also wondered in what animal was she training to turn into, but it wasn't suitable to ask, since the class had officially started. And now... the girl knew about the registry, but why could it be important? "Maybe it would've been some kind of... chaos," she said with her hand raised, "if there were unregistered animagi all around," riiiight?
"Yes, we do prefer order, don't we?" Cade smiled at that. Considering the state of her filing cabinet and inbox at work, Cade pretty much required order in her life. That answer made sense to her.

And malicious behavior towards Muggles would be easy if one could live in their home as a pet. Imagine the hijinks!"

Iris sighed. That was too much to wish for really, wasn't it? Never mind. Nodding at the woman, Iris smiled. "Yeah... sure. And... sorry." She must've lost track of time really badly making these cakes, to be late to Transfiguration.
As she wandered around the class handing out the cupcakes, Iris listened to the discussion going on. She wasn't going to add to it though. Not until she was sat down herself.
Leaving the box on an empty desk, the Head Girl took one and then made her way to an empty seat. She sat down just as the lady asked another question. As lots of other students quickly answered, Iris stayed quiet for the time being.

When he was in this class today, having come for the next Transfiguration class, Josh had been happy because it had lately been one of his favourite classes also Shaw being one of his favourite teachers. It was with Shaw that the Gryffindor had actually been called as the best of a magical wand work class. But now...this woman was NOT Shaw so the lion boy was not really happy about it anymore.
Caedwyn Howard of Magical Law Enforcement of the Ministry of Magic.
Was not this where Ryan belonged to as well? That man was a mess, so Josh doubted he was going to like this woman if she was also his kind.
Doing nothing but only listening the conversation about animagus topic in silence, Josh could not take his narrowed eyes off the woman. She was all talking and asking about the ministry and Josh surely did not like it. The ministry was a mess as a whole. Probably much more corrupted than Ryan man was.
He kept waiting and listening in silence...until he could not sit there anymore. There were things needed to be said and questions needed to be asked. And those were certainly not related to what kind of info Ministry wanted to register an animagus.
''Where's Shaw?'' so the Gryffindor stood up and asked, trying not to sound rude though. ''Could not he teach us about this?'' Then he eyed the cookies being passed around the class. Maybe it was the first time in his life that he felt that way but...Josh did not want any stupid cookies right now. He just wanted answers to his questions.
And who said he would trust the cookies of someone who worked at the ministry?

It wasn't her decision, but surely knowing that people were attempting dangerous magic was a good idea. She'd mention it to Mr. Bole.

Oh she asked a question. Hand shoots up in the air, be attentive, good impression and all right? "Uh... they gotta say what animal they turn into-- the more detailed the better, you know like uh breed and any kind of unique marks or something."
The Slytherin in the back had summarized nicely, and Caedwyn gave him a sunny smile for his efforts. "Nicely put. We date the entry, and we require as much information as available that will identify the witch or wizard in animal form."
That seemed to exhaust information on the registry, and Cade was happy to move on. "Are there any questions regarding the registry at this time?"

Oh... see? There was a nice Gryffindor not being particularly gallant. She knew he could do better, but perhaps there was a lack of fiber in his diet? Sodium deficiency?
"Mr. Shaw was unable to teach, and the Headmaster invited me to speak today. I'm sure the Headmaster would be happy to explain himself, but I cannot speak for him."

Narrowing his eyes a bit, Josh did not even blink while stared at the woman and carefully listened to her words. And to be honest he did not find those words satisfying. Actually they were far from being that. Josh was certain that she knew the answer but she did not want to provide it. How could Shaw be unable to teach anyway? He already did not spend time within the castle except those days that he came for classes so...was she saying that he could not find that one more little time to spend here? Wel...the Gryffindor doubted that.
But he was also sure that he was not going to be informed further about this. He was only...a student anyway. He had nothing to do about it. ''If i am supposed to ask him for the truth then...i will.'' he said confidently still having not moved his dark brown gaze away from her even for an instant. ''And back to the topic. I am saying so you'd just know; i will never register if i ever happen to manage to be an animagus.''

Sierra silently tapped her quill against a piece of blank parchment as she stared up at this woman. Yes, stared, and no--her parchment wasn't actually blank. She'd written one word at the top of the page: Transfiguration. That's as far as she'd gotten in her note-taking, though. Her head tilted slightly to the side as she looked at Josh, who'd asked the very same question she'd been thinking.
Shaw. Hmm. Sierra didn't have much for the man. He favored Josh, and anyone who favored Carter had to have a few screws loose in their head. There really wasn't much to contribute right now, so she continued to sit quietly while she waited for something...anything...to be said.

"No, we don't gather that data for the registry, although those who have a criminal record may have that information recorded elsewhere." It actually pained her to tell the poor little dear she was mistaken.
"Exactly. Every animagus has some sort of identifying mark that distinguishes him or her. The marks generally indicate a physical trait the person has in human form, such as a bald spot or a pattern of freckles."
"It does seem weird that we regulate the final outcome for those who complete the training, but that we don't require people to report to us that they are undergoing animagus training," Cade mused over that for a moment. It wasn't her decision, but surely knowing that people were attempting dangerous magic was a good idea. She'd mention it to Mr. Bole.
"But we only annotate the date they enter the registry."

Salander raised his hand up again. He actually did have a question "Uhm, Madame... Caedwyn?"... shouldnt that be Mademoiselle? Oh please correct him for the latter "... how would the Ministry know that the witch or wizard is registering their correct animgus form? Or that they would register at all? I mean what if someone can transform themselves into a fly? I mean they could get into any place, see and hear anything. Be hard to get them to give away something that is clearly an advantage to themselves so long as it remains their secret."

It couldn't be, but... she felt it was possible that this Gryffindor boy hated her. And since no one had ever been able to work up that sort of ire against the harmless Hufflepuff before, she found she didn't like it.
At all!
"You are, as always, entitled to do things as you see fit. I would caution you, however, that the consequences for being caught far exceed the small sacrifice of putting your name on the Ministry's registry. You could pay hefty fines or end up in Azkaban, and all for a little pride. Is it worth it?"

"Howard," Cade offered the boy. Caedwyn Howard. "When they register, they're required to show their animagus form, and a person can only have one. So that would indicate that what they registered matched their actual form. As for the other... it is a challenge to find people hiding their animagus skill, but you'd be surprised how careless someone can be when they think they're invisible."
This was definitely not one of her favourite subjects but Mia was all kinds of happy that they weren't going to perform any magic. It was always a good day when the class was a just a theory one.
So she sat and took notes while the Professor and students asked questions and answered them. Oh and Mia liked this Professor better than Shaw. Just sayin.
