Hufflepuff The Hufflepuff Herald

Welcome to the student driven notice board, just especially for Hufflepuffs: The Hufflepuff Herald! The Herald is a notice board that is updated on a regular basis containing any and all information from the date and time of Quidditch tryouts/practices, classes going on in the school, homework, etc. By keeping you informed, it offers us the chance to gain the most house points in a term!

However, posting in here is restricted to the Hufflepuff Prefects and Quidditch Captain ONLY. If you wish to submit something for the Herald, then you must PM one of them or your Head of House. This is the 18th of the Herald and your current editors are Treyen Lockhart (Lockhartian), Arya Lovegoods (grangerfan8) and Isobel VonHue (EmilyMalfoy).

Welcome to Hufflepuff!

A very warm COOL and enthusiastic welcome to our newly sorted Hufflepuffs, we hope you guys are having fun already! Congratulations on having the honor of belonging in the best House ever our House of gold and black, it is certainly a joy for us all to have you in it, however, if you do not share the same joy I assure you that Hufflepuff and all its members will grow on you before you realize it.

But not everything is about our newest additions, for all you returning students are equally important to us. You know the rules, and you’re bound not to get lost by now, so, please set a good example around the school, remember you represent Hufflepuff, so, do as a true Badger will do. In other words, Hogwarts is not a zoo, refrain from acting like monkeys, or zebras, or whatever animal you deem appropriate, outside (and inside as well) the privacy of the Common Room lounge.

Now, the most important part…have fun (do try to study in the meantime), and don't pay attention to whoever still thinks there's a man-eating plant on the grounds, Headmaster Tate only has our safety as a priority.

Also, feel free to admire that ship the Headmaster mentioned in his speech from far away. And DO try to keep safe distance from the Whomping Willow...it can hurt you.

The Herald's History

The Hufflepuff Herald is your number one source of information concerning everything school-related. This is the 18th edition of the Herald, which has switched hands several times: Nabiya MacPherson, Raymond Luxury-Yacht, Evy Abagnale, Evan Cassels, Evzen Ferez, Caitlin White, Amelia Rose, Savannah Mae, Seth Paton, Kayla Winters, Dominic Denton, Tamzin Wood, Kaika Lockhart, Torin Kane, Miranda BelCanto, Sarah Griffin, Lorelai Bristol, Wesley Reagan, Melanie Lockhart and Cedric Leone have all been editors of the Herald. The current editors are Arya Lovegoods (grangerfan8), Isobel VonHue (EmilyMalfoy) and Treyen Lockhart (Lockhartian).

(OOC) F.A.Q.

Where can I find my member number?
You can find your member number by clicking on your username to view your profile, and then by looking at the number at the end of the link. For example, mine would be 84693.

What year are we supposed to be in?
It's currently the year of 2074-75.

Do I have to do the homework and attend classes?
No, it is not mandatory. However, if you want to earn house points for Hufflepuff, completing homework and participating in the classes is the best way to do it.

What does OOC mean?
OOC means ''Out Of Character'', while IC means ''In Character''.

How can I get involved in the school story? I feel so out of everything.
There are so many ways to get your character involved in the RPG! The best ways are having them join the Quidditch team, participate in the classes, and meet other students! Also, if you're confused about what's going on in the school's plot line, take a look at Hogwarts, A History; it should help answer a lot of your questions.

Is there a Head Boy and Girl? Are there Prefects?
Indeed there is! They are Finlay Carmicheal (RachieRu) and Iris Beaumont (Nixy!) and can be identified by a Head Boy and Girl Tag, respectively, under their usernames.
In addition, there are still two Prefects for each house, and they will be designated by a Prefect's Badge under their username.

If you have any other questions feel free to PM myself, Patrice (grangerfan), Kailee (EmilyMalfoy) or our super amazing HoH (Colley ♥). You can also go to the Question Thread as well.

Classroom Tips

1. Respect your teachers and classmates.
2. If you come online while the class is already going on, do not announce that you are late. Simply act like your character’s been there the whole time, otherwise teachers will deduct points from our house.
3. If you’ve got to leave before the end of the lesson, do not announce it.
4. Unnecessary chatting in the classroom will not be tolerated.
5. Keep OOC comments to a minimum.
6. When the teacher asks a question, feel free to raise your hand and offer an answer. The quickest answers as well as the most creative answers can be rewarded with house points.
7. Please be patient if the professor doesn’t answer you straight away. We all live in different timezones and have other responsibilities in real life, so it is possible the teacher had to leave for a few minutes/hours.
8. Be creative and have fun!

Classes in Session

Care of Magical Creatures; here, for everyone, first through seventh years
History of Magic; here, for everyone.
Potions; here, for everyone.
Transfiguration; here, for everyone.

Scheduled classes

Divination 1; Sunday, May 15th @ 3pm EST/11pm GMT

Homework

Runes Homework 1
Runes: Transcribe your name in Runes. Due May 19th.

Arithmancy homework 1
* Write a poem (paragram) that has some underlyng theme(s) present related to your house and/or its characteristics/values.

* Remember to use the Pythagorean Number System, as found in chapter two of the textbook, to add up the values of each line. You might need to tweak certain words/grammar in order to get the desired symmetry, but there should be some sort of pattern in the numerical value of each line.
Example:
ALL HOUSES ARE GREAT (70)
PROVIDING YOU WITH FUN (114)
READ A BOOK; DON'T BE LATE (70)
As you can see, the first and third lines have equivalent numerical values. They happen to rhyme too, but that isn't really necessary (more of an added bonus)

* Minimum 6 lines recommended
* Worth 10 points, but opportunity for extra credit points for OUTSTANDING efforts.
* Due by Finals Week, so you have some time to think on this assignment since it will be time consuming and should take some creativity/effort with regards to word usage =)
* Follow all Arithmancy homework submission guidelines found here

If you encounter any questions regarding the assignments, feel free to PM myself (EmilyMalfoy), Patrice (grangerfan8), Karla (Lockhartian) or the Professor who assigned the homework.

Extras

Hogwarts Grounds. Our beloved Groundskeeper MisterChadStryker is always busy, whereas talking to students or keeping the grounds looking as perfect as possible for us. The grounds are extensive, so make sure to keep an eye out for any volunteers he might be looking to lend a hand or two or four in doing some light chores around them.
The Greenhouses / The Student Graden. Professor Bentley has worked hard over the summer to keep the Student Garden running, and we're sure she'll like to keep both the Garden and the Greenhouses well maintained... Have a knack for Herbology? Then why not offer your assistance in helping to ensure the plants are well nourished and everything kept in place?
The Stable / Magical Creatures Nursery. All that we know is that creatures are kept there, and that Professor MacFusty oversees everything in there. Why not offer some assistance to help him out? Whether it be cleaning or caring for a little Crup, we're sure MacFusty would be glad. A suggestion? Try to stay away from the Professor's Jarvey.
Hogwarts Library. Perhaps you are one who enjoys the books and spends way too much time inside reading/studying. If this is you, then try offering out your assistance to reshelving/organizing books to Madame Donovan.
The Old Ship. No one knows where it came from, you might as well check it out and see if there's something you can find out about it. Plus, it's always fun to hang around in a Ship, no?

Find anyplace else that you think would be good to add to this 'extra' list for Badgers to know? Please send a PM to one (or both) of your House Prefects.

Homework

History of Magic Homework I
Create a new house for Hogwarts.

Make sure you describe everything thoroughly. A great explanation of everything should be at least a parchment long/or three paragraphs long. We are not just filling in the blanks. Really take the time to explain everything out.

You need to describe everything about your new house, including but not limited to:
*Name
*Founder
*Crest
*Colors
*Mascot/Animal
*Attributes/Traits/Characteristics
*Goals

Again: Make sure you describe everything thoroughly. A great explanation of everything should be at least a parchment long/or three paragraphs long. We are not just filling in the blanks. Really take the time to explain everything out.

Points Possible: 7 pts

Extra Credit: Create your crest by either drawing it or by using a graphics program.

Due Date: Saturday, May 28 by midnight CST

OOC: Don't forget to take a look at the Homework & Assignments Rules to know how to submit everything. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to PM me, LezlieghD. Good luck!

Due Saturday, May 28 by midnight CST. PM to Professor Cerulean (Lezleighd) Worth 7 points; remember to include your Character Name, User Name, House, User ID (Found in your Profile at the end of the URL), and Title of Assignment.

Arithmancy Homework I
* Write a poem (paragram) that has some underlyng theme(s) present related to your house and/or its characteristics/values.

* Remember to use the Pythagorean Number System, as found in chapter two of the textbook, to add up the values of each line. You might need to tweak certain words/grammar in order to get the desired symmetry, but there should be some sort of pattern in the numerical value of each line.

Lame Example:
ALL HOUSES ARE GREAT (70)
PROVIDING YOU WITH FUN (114)
READ A BOOK; DON'T BE LATE (70)

As you can see, the first and third lines have equivalent numerical values. They happen to rhyme too, but that isn't really necessary (more of an added bonus)

* Minimum 6 lines recommended
* Worth 10 points, but opportunity for extra credit points for OUTSTANDING efforts.
* Due by Finals Week, so you have some time to think on this assignment since it will be time consuming and should take some creativity/effort with regards to word usage =)
* Follow all Arithmancy homework submission guidelines found here.

DUE BY FINALS WEEK. PM to Professor Hadley (PhoenixRising) Worth 10 Points; and remember to include your Character Name, User Name, House, User ID (Found in your Profile at the end of the URL), and Title of Assignment.

Care of Magical Creatures Homework I
What to do?: Draw Rosamund, the Sphinx that was part of the class. The drawing doesn't have to be perfect, as Lachlan doesn't expect any of you to be the next.... whatever it is that the name of that famous Muggle painter was. So if you make one and don't think it's good enough, send it to him all the same. If you do not feel like drawing, however, you can always answer the following riddle:

It can't be seen, it can't be smelled
It can't be heard, it can't be felt
It hides behind stars and hills
And deep holes it fills
It comes before and ends after
Ending life and killing laughter

Getting the right answer isn't the most important part; the important part is to explain the reasons behind your answer. A five-seven sentences long paragraph will do the trick just fine.

When is it due?: Ten days from now aka May 27th.
Anything else: Please read the Homework Guidelines before sending your homework. Fail to follow any of the rules/steps stated in that post and no points will be awarded.

Due May 27th. PM to Professor MacFusty (Oesed) Worth 10 points; remember to include your Character Name, User Name, House, User ID (Found in your Profile at the end of the URL), and Title of Assignment.

Defense Against the Dark Arts Assignment I

2. 100 minutes of meditating about a proper role model
3. 50 front rolls
4. Stretch daily

You may use the DADA training room, or anywhere else in the school.

A typical entry would include:

IC date/time

Homework

Divination Lesson 1 Homework
After the lesson, it should be obvious that there are some aspects of the established list of symbols and meanings that don't necessarily work when it comes to all symbol-based Divination.
In that case, perhaps there should be a bit of alteration to make the list more appropriate, or at least more meaningful for our purposes.

Assignment:
Choose one option:

* Choose five of the already established symbols from the list given in class and write your own interpretations of their meanings
-or-
* Create three new symbols and give their meanings

Note: For each option, also include a short explanation (300 words maximum) as to why you selected/created these symbols, and if you like, include some sort of imagery to help visualize the symbols (what they look like, etc.)

Due by Sunday, June 12 at midnight PST (Monday, June 13 at 8 am GMT / 3 am EST). PM to Professor Bishop (SilverTiger) Worth 10 Points; and remember to include your Character Name, User Name, House, User ID (Found in your Profile at the end of the URL), and Title of Assignment.

Herbology Homework One
Task:
Answer the following Questions:

1) Identify the three sub-categories of water plants, and provide an example of each. (3 points)

2) Write a short essay on how witches and wizards can help protect the environment and save endangered plants. Please refer to the Stubby Purple Coral as a primary example in your explanation. (7 points)

Note: Essay should consist of no less than two paragraphs, seven sentences per paragraph minimum.

Due by Monday, June 13 at 11 am GMT. PM to Professor Bentley (Hera) Worth 10 Points; and remember to include your Character Name, User Name, House, User ID (Found in your Profile at the end of the URL), and Title of Assignment.

Astronomy 1
Choose one of the following:

1. On the basis of what you learned this lesson, discuss the merits of searching for extraterrestrial life. Is it even worth looking for it? Are there better ways of going about it, and if so, what would they be? One roll of parchment maximum (3 paragraphs).

2. For the more creatively inclined among you: Come up with your own planet!
You will need to provide a short description of the planet itself (Does it have a name? Does it have moons? What does it look like?). Then, describe the sort of life this planet might have. What do the inhabitants look like? Do they walk upright like us? Do they breathe air? How do they live? Is there something like "magic" on this planet as well?

Due by Friday, June 17 at 11:59 pm GMT. PM to Professor Antares (Antarctica!) Worth 10 Points; and remember to include your Character Name, User Name, House, User ID (Found in your Profile at the end of the URL), and Title of Assignment.

Hogwarts Grounds. Our beloved Groundskeeper Stryker is always busy, whereas talking to students or keeping the grounds looking as perfect as possible for us.
The Old Ship .

Hufflepuff caught the Snitch.

Game Summary

House Points

Gryffindor: 997
Slytherin: 900
Ravenclaw: 826
Hufflepuff: 442

Prefect's Note
If anyone hasn't noticed that we're currently holding the last place in the race for the House Cup, then that one person has been in the Hospital Wing since the start of the school year.

Yes, we're currently in last place, and whilst we need a lot of points to advance, we're Badgers, we're hard-workers, aren't we? That means...WE CAN DO THIS. Or, at least, earn a few more points, which can be done by completing some of that homework up there, or attending those lessons.

I will also like to point out that you should still attend your Potions lessons when Professor Lafay notifies us of one. The fire in the dungeons won't be considered as an excuse for lack of Hufflepuffs in her class.

Go on and be merry.

Prefect Lockhart.

Now for the above scenario, what is their 4th challenge number?

* Worth 10 points (for part two, all work needs to be shown for full credit)
* Due within two weeks from the timestamp on this post (aka sometime on July 10/11th depending on your timezone)
* Follow all Arithmancy homework submission guidelines found here.
DUE BY JULY 10/11th. PM to Professor Hadley ( PhoenixRising) Worth 10 points; remember to include your Character Name, User Name, House, User ID (Found in your Profile at the end of the URL), and Title of Assignment.

Herbology Homework II

Task:
1. Your task is to grow two different plants/shrubs/trees of your choice, in the student garden. You will need to consider what you are going to grow, you must then plant them, and provide immediate care for them- water, fertilizer- which one will you use? Etc.

2. Also explain why you selected those particular plants.

3. You must also care for two plants in the greenhouse. This includes but is not restricted to trimming, fertilizing and watering.

OOC: You must RP these activities in the appropriate area, e.g. student garden/greenhouses, this should be done in a minimum of four posts (one for each plant). DO NOT DOUBLE POST! ... When submitting your homework please provide the link to your post along with your written explanation of your plant selection. Note the written component! For full marks be creative and have fun with it.

Worth:
8 points

Extra Credit:
Answer the following Question:

1. List two things you would like to learn in future Herbology classes and why? (2 points)

2 points

Due:
Friday 8th July, 3pm GMT

Submit to:
Professor Bentley

OOC: Please read through the Herbology Rules and Expectations in regards to submitting homework. I will NOT accept late submissions. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to send me a PM, and I’ll be more than happy to help you out.

ooc: This class was shorter than my usual classes because it's worth a few less points. By doing so, my homework is worth more (15 points.) To receive points I need to see a MINIMUM of 6 total posts: 5 on the grounds somewhere retrieving the five potion ingredients, one in the open potions stores leaving off your potions followed by a PM with user id and the links. Due two weeks from this post.

DUE SATURDAY, JULY 2. PM to Professor Lafay (Droo) Worth 15 points; remember to include your Character Name, User Name, House, User ID (Found in your Profile at the end of the URL), and Title of Assignment.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Arithmancy I Homework I
* Write a poem (paragram) that has some underlyng theme(s) present related to your house and/or its characteristics/values.

* Minimum 6 lines recommended

Defense Against the Dark Arts Assignment I
Implement these 10 activities into your daily and weekly routines. Keep a detailed diary of your progress, trials, and successes.

Weekly Physical & Mental Fitness agenda

1. Run 8 km (5 miles)
2. 100 minutes of meditating about a proper role model
3. 50 front rolls
4. Stretch daily
5. Ball room dance with a partner at least twice a week
6. Spend time every day trying to touch your toes
7. Talk to yourself in the mirror about your goals and how you'll achieve each one
8. Karate
9. Swim the lake
10. Singing is good for the soul. Sing to an acquaintance at least once a week.

Your diaries will be due at the end of the term and graded on thoroughness, progress, and honesty.

OOC: RP your character doing these activities throughout the term, keep an IC journal, and links to your character RPing. You'll be rewarded appropriately by amount of effort shown. Do not turn this in right away, as it is a term long assignment. At the end of term, Lord Borr will accept your diaries via PM unless otherwise stated. You may use the DADA training room, or anywhere else in the school.

A typical entry would include:

IC date/time
IC recount of activity
Link to RP

DUE AT THE END OF TERM. PM to Lord Borr (Berty Borr); remember to include your Character Name, User Name, House, User ID (Found in your Profile at the end of the URL), and Title of Assignment.
