Default Staff Table

The staff are seated at a long table, stretching across a dais at the front of the room. Feel free to come up and greet them after the feast has started.

"Thank you for that welcome, Headmaster Tate. I am, as he said, Mr. Ikenna Gevrik, Special Security Liaison to the School." He extended a warm smile toward the assembled students and bowed in their direction as well, though at the same time he swept his arms out, he also cast a nonverbal sticking charm at Vindictus' hands in mid-clap.

With the clapping stopped and a dead silence in the Hall, Ikenna straightened back up with a genuinely friendly expression.

"Those of you who can recall events of the past, from a flooding school to an underground fight club, will find it easy to see why the Ministry of Magic has concerns about security around its most precious asset: the bodies and minds of our future leaders. Those of you who may be younger will at the least realize that a heightened sense of safety and security around the castle will not only allow everyone to sleep better at night, but it will also pre-empt any future warnings from your professors, such as orders to 'do not die.'"

Gevrik's beetle-like eyes glittered for a moment with amusement as he cracked a smile, and then he continued onward in a most amicable tone.

"Perhaps some of your good, safe choices this year will lead to good rewards, not only for you, your professors or your house-mates, but perhaps also for the betterment of all mankind. The times are changing swiftly and as the Headmaster said, I can only ask that you lend me your ears and remain open-minded this school year, for you will all find that I am not your typical dose of Ministry intervention."

No, Ikenna Gevrik could be something much more sinister...but he did not drop the smile from his face or the friendliness in his tone...yet.

"Again, I appreciate Hogwarts opening its doors to me and I can only hope that you will all also open your minds and hearts, for I hold the safety and security of us all very dear in mine."

He bowed his head once more to signify the end of his speech and then smoothly slid back down into his seat.

GRRR.....

While the Garlic man was speaking, Max turned to Ethan and Hecate. "Can one of you please undo the spell that the stupid git just cast?" he asked in a low voice.

you live your life just once, so don't forget about a thing called love.

Chad paused as Tate stood up and made a wonderful and short speech. FOOD. Oh wait...this strange man had something to say apparently. He sat quietly, staring at his plate and his brow furrowing the more he spoke. He was from the Ministry? Chad didn't remember him being there when Reagan was in charge and he was department head. Strange.

Chad clapped quietly and respectfully, though not enthusiastically. He had other things on his mind. Like...exactly HOW long would it take to cut all the grass on the grounds with nothing but safety scissors. Hmm...

Oh, right, the woman.

"I am Chad Stryker. I have been hired to take up the Groundskeeping position. It is wonderful to meet you, Mademoiselle Lafay." Now he was confused, though. "Wait...is there a tournament this year? Oh...non?"

And wherever they were, Josephina truly did hope that they were content.
"I see," Kurumi said sadly looking down at the table. "I wish I would have been able to say good-bye properly." Like, with a giant basket filled with cookies. They both had been great role models for Kurumi her first year. It was a shame to have them leave so soon. "Thank you for your time, Professor. I probably should be heading back to the Gryffindor table now."

Wait...what? No exploding cookies or glares at daring to offer sweets to her? Things really were different this year. Or, perhaps things just were not what she had seemed. Had she been putting Dragon Lady into a box and labeling it incorrectly? Not that she wanted to hug her or anything, that was still too scary. "Your welcome," Kurumi said bowing again first to maybe-not-so-dragonlike Dragon Lady and then to Headmaster Tate.

Turning around, Kurumi felt like she could breath again and she scampered off back to her seat.

The betterment of all mankind? Sure, free garlic for all. Jared's lips twitched again, but his real thoughts on the matter remained sealed off at the back of his mind. If he found this man a force to be reckoned with, his expressions said nothing of that kind.

Open his mind and heart? No, thank you. Now, what about the food?

"Excellent advice, Mister Gevrik," Tate gave the man an oddly formal bow before he rose lazily from his own seat. He swept out his hands for silence, enjoying the way students stopped chattering at his gesture.

You see that, Lafay? If he was just a figurehead, they wouldn't acknowledge him. These students weren't idiot pawns to be played in someone else's game.

"If I can have your attention, students... if you can bear with me for a few moments of business chatter, there is a bountiful feast as reward on the other side. I welcome you back to Hogwarts once again. To returning students, you will see new faces at the staff table. Please make every effort to welcome staff members and students to our home. To new students... the rules at Hogwarts are simple and we will make every effort to make them clear. First and foremost, make good choices and do not die."

Always always... do not die.

"In addition to our new staff, we also welcome Mr. Ikenna Gevrik to Hogwarts. He will be serving as... a special security consultant and is very interested in making the school as safe as possible. It is my desire that you make him welcome and listen to everything he has to say. It is, of course, your own responsibility to way those things you hear against your own conscience and make decisions that are right for yourself."

And... did Gevrik want to say anything? Hmm?
.... Love?

Was Casey insane? Clearly. Yes. He had to be. You didn't just go flinging words like 'love' around when it came to women like Anastasia Bunbury, and Caroline Avalon for that matter, as Tate had grown to discover.

"I think your regards would be a safer bet." He murmured. Not to mention he wasn't entirely sure that he liked hearing any other man, even one who was his friend and Zan knew it wasn't meant in any particular way, using the world 'love' in relation to his Annie.

He fell silent for the... well it wasn't much of a speech, but Truebridge listened all the same.

Truebridge caught sight of the Baron and nodded in return, quite calmly, and pleased to see the ghost.

"You're welcome to visit me in my new office, Baron." He spoke quietly and politely to the ghost. It would be good to renew old friendships.

Or, well, associations, really.

CLAP. CLAP. CLAP.

But Tate should be proud of Vindictus - the man refrained from whistling and shouting 'Tell 'em like it is, Tatertot!'

Applause was harmless. Now could we eat?
Ethan winced slightly at the clapping. It was loud in his ear and applause tended to remind him of broadway. Good things and bad things, but unnecessary things all.

"Welcome back, Ethan." Josephina greeted, albeit late compared to some of the other professors. So had Tate decided Defense was too much for him or was Ethan multi-talented and taking up post in one of the other subject areas?

Only time will tell.
Hmm?

Oh.

"Josephina." Ethan greeted politely and then after a belated moment offered a smile. She was alright, he supposed.

....

Alright.

That didn't sound too ominous.

Ethan wasn't about to applause, but he did listen closely, trying to sort through nuances... and naturally he couldn't identify even one hint that the man was anything other than genuine.

Not so good at reading social cues after all.

Truebridge met her comment with silence and then once again pushed his sunglasses up into his hair, meeting the woman's eyes.

"I'm pleased to know that you are building on the foundations I established with the Slytherins, Hecate. More than you know." As long as they were doing well, as long as they were strong, living up to their skills, their ambitions, as long as they were happy, then he was content.

"They can learn much from you."

He could feel the spell lift and Max slowly parted his hands that curled up into fists that he rested on the table.

"Thank you."

Slowly, he began to flex his fingers and restrained himself from tapping them loudly on the table. What was Tate waiting for? Garlic was finished with his little speech.

Trying to make time pass, he turned back to Ethan.

"So you're still seeing Annie? You should give the ol' girl a kiss for me, and make sure you use those exact words - 'ol' girl'. If you don't, she won't believe the message was from me."

Smirk.

"Ike..." Ethan half murmured a repetition and thought about it seriously. No. he hadn't said that but...

"I like Garlic." Truebridge commented quietly, eyes flicking to Tate from behind his stunna shades.

Easy, man.

Tate's speech answered a lot of questions he had about the strange happenings at the staff table and the ministry member, Mr. Ikenna Gevrik's (if one was to be formal) addition only furthered the understanding. At the same time, there were a lot of shadows being cast about, segmenting parts of Hogwarts from the student's eyes. It was in the strange repressed authority that seemed to come from Tate and the presence of this new man that most of them were cast. And he didn't like it. Not one bit. But Tate had asked them to make this man at home, and while he couldn't bring himself to just welcome him with open arms as Mr. Gevrik requested, he could make an introduction and a point. He just had to keep in mind what he had learned all these years and lock his tongue on some choice words.

Reaching the staff table, he couldn't help but smile at the familiar faces. Lafay was first, and despite his rough relationship with the woman in the past, a new year required a fresh start. And an apology, but that could wait. Instead he managed as best of a polite nod as he could. "Professor Lafay."

Unable to think of much else to say to here at the moment, he turned his attention to the next staff member. Truebridge, to whom he gave a polite nod of the head. It had been a while since he had seen the man, but he wouldn't forget the one that saved him from Huxely's fireballs. "Professor Truebridge. It's wonderful to see you at Hogwarts again this year."

His eyes went to Vindictus and he had to repress the urge to blatantly comment on the change in the Deputy's position. Carefully was okay, provided he could manage to portray his honest disapproval of the whole rearrangement without outright insulting the ministry official. "Professor Vindictus, always an honor to be in the presence of a man who does not base his self-image upon iconic perception." Right handed chairs were overrated; or at least in this case they were.

While Tate was next and he offered the man a small smile, he didn't address him just yet. Best for last, or most honorable for last. Plus, one never knew how much the ministry took offence to not being greeted first. So instead he turned his eyes to Ikenna, considering the man for a moment before extending his hand in greeting. "Sir. Sabel Dakest. I just wanted to extend a welcome to Hogwarts, and to assure you that we will keep an open mind and open hearts to the protection of this school and its members. We honor your interest in observing the dedication that the students and staff of this school have in protecting one another. Perhaps you will be able to return to the Ministry with some inspiration. Until that time, we will be glad to shuffle down one seat for you and misplace our elbow space to make room for you to join us." May as well add in a polite bow of the head to top things off before returning to give a more respectful and deep nod to Tate.

"Headmaster." There wasn't much more he needed to say right away to indicate how relieved he was that Tate was still at the school and still running things. It also didn't serve to hide his underlying worry for the current situation, but that was a talk for another time. "...Welcome back."

"Don't mention it." Max would do the same, assuming he could.

Hmm?

Ethan digested this.

"Annie and I are still together, yes." Ol' Girl? "Ah. I suppose she... isn't getting any younger." He agreed in a vague sort of way. But then, no less beautiful either. Anastasia Bunbury was like a fine wine. Time only made her better.

Though that did imply that there would be a time where she would grow sour beyond belief...

Ethan Truebridge sipped his water from his square glass. "I will use those exact words." He intoned seriously, not getting the joke.

His eyes went to a Gryffindor. That one had grown noticeably but, after a quick moment of thought, Truebridge realised the boy would be a 7th year now, so it wasn't so surprising.

What was somewhat surprising was that Sabel Dakest hadn't, in the past year, said anything to get himself killed. Smart child, but not always so quick on the self-edit. Very Gryffindor. In the good ways, Ethan supposed.

"Sabel." He greeted. "Good to see you."

"Good to see you, too, Sabel. Now why don't you go find a seat at the Gryffindor table so that Headmaster Tate can give us the okay to start eating," Vindictus grinned and his stomach grumbled. Yes, it was definitely time to eat.

Ethan digested this.

"Annie and I are still together, yes." Ol' Girl? "Ah. I suppose she... isn't getting any younger." He agreed in a vague sort of way. But then, no less beautiful either. Anastasia Bunbury was like a fine wine. Time only made her better.

Max just grinned. He knew that no woman liked to be referred to as 'ol' girl'. "Soooo... you're still together. That's good... very good! Why, I thought the two of you would've made it official by now."

"Yes. She moved with me to Egypt." Ethan answered quietly. And now they'd both returned to England, except that he was here and away from her for right now.

Tate had promised access though.

He refilled his drink.

"Made what official?"

Official things were not usually good things. Probation had been official. Azkaban, that had been official...

Women had a way of dropping hints and if the hints didn't work, then they were masters of delivering ultimatums. Did Ethan know this?

"She tolerated the sand in Egypt? Amazing."

But then Ethan asked about making it official.

"You mean you two aren't...?"

Vindictus paused and shook his head.

He knew Anastasia Bunbury and she always got what she wanted.

Now how to say it without saying it. He leaned forward with his elbows resting on the table and began to speak.

"Have the two of you discussed any, ahem, future plans?" he asked all the while playing with the thick band of gold on his left ring finger.

"Yes. As long as she had nice shoes to wear." Truth. "And of course, the pay as a professor at the Cairo University is far better than here. She liked that."

Naturally. More money meant more shoes.

Aren't? Aren't what? They were together, so what could they not be?

Maximus Vindictus was a very odd man.

Future plans though, "Yes." Ethan paused. "Next saturday, we're going over to the reservation. Theres a Horntail due to give Birth and Annie wants to see."

That was in the future. True to form, Ethan Truebridge did not notice Max fiddle with his ring.

He poured himself another glass of water and sipped on it in silence.

One place not many others could, though knowing that had hardly been a source of pride for him in the past. Too many complications, as far as family and family matters were concerned. "That actually sounds like a fine arrangement." She'd just have to let him know in advance, or he might be attempting to convince a manticore to please, not eat him while she enjoyed France's beauty.

Why did his thoughts love to make fun of him? Jared almost grinned and then, realizing that he hadn't said anything out loud to grin about, did not. Not that that made a difference here.

Change in perspective. "Looks like you're already teaching me, mademoiselle," Jared laughed, a warm laugh but one that might have been real or fake [one could hardly ever tell with Jared] not at all aware that he was echoing her own thoughts. "But theory and practice are two different things, entirely. Here's to the hope that if it comes to the latter, you won't throw me out of the North Tower." He lifted his goblet to her, an amused look in his eyes.
The corners of Renée's mouth turned up slightly, yet again, as she first got enough from Jared to say that he hadn't quite figured her out yet, and then it seemed she'd finagled a possible invitation to a family home. An estate even. She couldn't say she really had known many people who had an estate, and she couldn't exactly say she was desperate for money. Just not an estate person. "That sounds like it could be interesting," she said vaguely, still tuned in to him the slightest bit. She hadn't really looked away from him very much, and it was hard to completely abandon it when she'd gotten even the tiniest bit in. And another faint grin crept onto her face at his next comment. or the thought attached, as it seemed he'd amused himself as well. "I'll make sure to remember that then." She wouldn't want to miss more possibilities for amusing conversation because of manticores.

Her dark eyes widened slightly at his almost joking words regarding their jest abotu her teaching him her specialty, however. She hadn't thought he was like her, beyond the already decided flip-side ability. He didn't seem like he knew she'd been thinking that, but it was hard to tell. Just like the laugh had been hard to determine. It hadn't seemed entirely put on, but she could have been reading things into the matter. "That is completely true, and I'll promise right now that I'll try not to throw you out of my tower," she said, accompanying it with another wry smile. The likelihood of that happeneing was slim anyway, especially physically. She imagined he could counteract any charms she could use as well, given his subject. It was all hypothetical anyway.

The boy was slightly surprised by that, though, by the way Ellie spoke again. There was only the tiniest smirk on his face. Even if he sort of knew that her words were totally uncalled for.

Oh, but he didn't want to face Ellie, he wouldn't want to venture the sight of tears on her face.

That voice was, like, music to his ears. A choir of angels singing right beside him. This time he did venture a look towards the beautiful voice and smiled. "Evening, Healer Moretti," he said, totally oblivious as to what she was saying and to whom it was being said to.

She could be deadly, you know, Moretti, because he seemed to wander off into other world.

But whatever cloud he'd been at, thanks to the Healer, he was brought back to earth rather hard and pretty fast.

The boy couldn't help but eye the Healer before turning back to meet this other woman's gaze. He wouldn't want his favorite Healer to think badly of him, would he?

Treyen straightened himself and had that tiniest smirk again, "Lockhart," he said, with a slight feel of pride as he said it. He'll always say it that way, no matter if he already knew the truth about Gilderoy. 'New isn't always bad'. "But we don't know that, do we?" he was trying to keep his voice away from any rude hint whatsoever. The Healer was paying attention now. "At any rate, we'll hope things go well," and was that the nicest thing he had to say? Yes.

He, of course, listened to what the woman said to Ellie and sincerely hoped that the words wouldn't make the Ravenclaw cry. He truly did hope so, since the words had managed to make him teary on the inside.

Then again, his heart was already broken, he was bound to be a bit more susceptible to those words. But he nodded when she mentioned her office. They may pay a visit....or not. We'll see.

And he was about to head down to his table...when...'new transfiguration professor'.

He. Froze. In. Place.

Even his eyes seemed frozen, for they weren't even managing to blink. He swallowed hard and kept his eyes on Lafay. He must have heard wrong, right? Treyen didn't even want to look towards where Kingsley should be sitting.

Yeah, that was it. He was becoming a bit distressed about the fact that he wasn't around at the moment, so now he was hearing things, yes. The boy should probably head back to the table. His table. Hufflepuff table, that is.

She nodded to the woman, and made a note to owl Lexi when she returned to her office. Maybe it would make her feel better to know that the students had not forgotten the missing professors.

As she thought, Lilyan noted the look of another male professor. What subject was he teaching, then? She offered a polite smile at him, since he was looking, and because she was not the type to yell at people across a table.

There would be plenty of time to get acquainted later on.

Turning her eyes back to the students, Lilyan smiled at Treyen, though he was not exactly off the hook either, "Good Evening to you, Mr. Lockhart, did you have a lovely summer?"

She was suddenly reminded of the little boy who appeared in her hospital during her first term, worried about scarring his "beautiful face". Ah. Kids grew fast, didn't they?

And Meanie Teacher was NOT making this situation any better. True, Ellie was less sad now, but she was more angry. She didn't like this woman's choice of words. Nope.

"You don't understand! And you don't know anything about Reyn to tell us that he misses us," Ellie shot at her. That was just coldddd, teacher. Sniffle.

And the whole 'nothing to do with him leaving'? Yeah, lies. She was sure of it, now. Well...not really. Deep down, she knew Bishop had nothing to do with Reyn leaving. It was all Ginger's fault. Meanie Ginger.

Later? Ellie chewed this thought over. She presumed the 'in private' was code for 'office'. Which would mean no other teachers like Moretti sticking up for the newbie meanie teacher. Therefore, she liked the idea. "I think I'll take you up on that offer." Probably in the morning, though, cuz crying was actually making her pretty tired. And tomorrow still counted as later.

So with that business temporarily out of the way, Ellie became conscious of Treyen losing focus on the IMPORTANT part. That was until she'd caught and processed what was going on. Something about 'new Transfiguration professor' and 'where's Kingsley'.

OHNO.

Ellie, dry of tears, was able to clearly focus on her friend. If Kingsley was gone...that'd be, like, the end-all for him. He'd dressed up as the Professor for the costume ball last term, for Merlin's sake.

"He must've taken up another post," she quickly said. She wasn't one for letting things go, apparently. "Like Charms, maybe." It was similar to Transfiguration after all. It crossed paths occasionally, too. Didn't they go over that in class before? And since Carlton's not here...

Wait.

Where was Carlton?

"Healer Moretti..." Ellie began. She knew about the Hawaii thing. Carlton mentioned it at the feast when Ellie was trying to convince Reyn not to leave. "Professor Carlton...she's just running late, right?" She was probably just applying aloe to the sunburn she must've gotten in Hawaii. Most likely.

"Ellie, that's enough," he said, keeping his voice low. It was almost a whisper, honestly. He was actually worried about Ellie gaining a detention or something.

But, hey, if it helped with the NO tears strategy, then he was all up for it.

His face was turned to Ellie when she spoke next. Another post. She was forever smart for saying that, but why did it feel like she was doing that so he'll feel better?

There was no answer from his side, though he was blinking, at least. Even if he was terrified of knowing the truth if it meant that Kingsley was gone.

Terrified. So, yes, he was close to panicking now, AGAIN.

The ever-soothing voice managed to keep his panicking away. And he was grateful for that.

He smiled, again, and it seemed that it was the only thing he did whenever Moretti was around. Even if someone was dying at the tournament, he was smiling.

Oh, and she went to Hawaii? "I'm glad you did," he said, still smiling, yes, "You must have looked beyond beautiful there," and that's when he noticed what he said, "I mean--not you, the landscaping you know, you must have looked at pretty beautiful sights in there," and now the Hufflepuff was blushing only a bit.

He'd never been to that side of the World, but he'd seen the pictures, the Muggle ones, and it was beautiful.

Now, he could stay here forever, honestly. Who needed the Hufflepuffs? Actually, the Hufflepuffs didn't need a Lockhart, right? They already had a Fletcher. Soooo, he won't be missed if he stayed here...or at the Hospital Wing the whole year.

He placed his elbow on Ellie's shoulder and totally leaned on her. Yes, he was comfortable, or as comfortable as one could be when that shoulder was at the same height as your own. Except, he had no idea he was leaning on Ellie. He even crossed his right leg in front of the left one as he did so.

Man! That wall was comfy, the one he was leaning on.

At least the drama with the students was good for one thing. Distracting her from contemplating the many ways she wouldn't be able to vent frustration with Jared's perceived inability to comprehend Divination with ejecting him from the tower. Not that she didn't think she could break through that, just like she could break through the students' disappointment and immature actions. Perhaps not right now, but she would get through to them. She did feel like an explanation might be necessary to the healer, as while the other staff member seemed to accept her words, there was other things beneath it. And that was without using anything beyond the vague sensations at the table, at least the area where they were. She needed to handle the students first however, as it seemed down to her now.

She inclined her head at the Hufflepuff boy as he supplied his name with a smirk, first. "Well, pleasure to make your acquaintance, Mr. Lockhart. Even if right now we don't seem to meet eye to eye," she said nicely, before regaerding him calmly as he replied to her earlier comments. Part of her hoped he had more promise than the man whose surname he shared, but then that was history. "You're right. You don't, which is why there needs to be a bit of faith," she replied. In her qualifications, if not in her teaching abilities. Both seemed to be tenuous with these two students, with their being upset at Professor Reynolds being gone. "We shall," she concluded simply, when it came to Mr. Lockhart's addition to the mess.

At whcih point her attention went back to Miss Stone. Who still seemed the more vocal of the two in her disappointment and sadness. Although she found the silent accusation towards the healer interesting. She hadn't needed that to know her name. She didn't flinch at the continued venting, however. Niether did she say anything, as she had a feeling anything she said would be twisted right now. There needed to be a bit of distance in the matter, from the heightened emotions of the feast, if not everything else. She did wonder if the girl really meant what she said, though, as it made her sound like she didn't think her beloved professor would miss her. A knowing glint crept into her eyes at the agreement to postpone the discussion til later, however. Simply at the thought that she would be without defense. She was never without defense, and her office was her turf. not to mention it had adorable puppy going for it. "I'll see you later then," she said, before leaving them to their continued thoughts and worries. Since she wasn't the only new professor there, and it seemed they were now noticing. There were others she needed to continue conversations with before things got fully underway.

"Thank you," Kurumi smiled seemingly to have stopped her nervous stuttering. Should she apologize for bowing over again over again? No, that would probably make her do more bowing. Best to just do as the professor said and relax. "Professor, if you don't mind my asking, why were you at the party?" Perhaps she was a friend of Jake's mother?
Renée turned back to Miss Hollingberry with relief as the girl finally shifted from her bow. She was itching to smooth the askew hair down, but the weirdness of that might start things off again. And she didnt want that so soon after the previous awkwardness. "You're welcome," she replied, at least glad the girl had relaxed enough to have stopped stuttering. Nervousness just made her uncomfortable, honestly, and there was enough going on right now without that. She smiled at the girl as she spoke again, however. "Of course I don't mind. If you'd like my honest answer, I went because I saw the invitation posted while I was in Diagon Alley. And I'd figured it could be a good place to get to know some of the students before the term started. In a more relaxed setting, you see." Another half-smile crept onto her face as she continued to remember. The prospect of ice cream hadn't been bad either.

Hmm?

But then it seemed Headmaster Tate had decide to get things rolling, and she turned her attention to the man as he stood to make the traditional speech. After silently hoping the students had all returned to their tables, as she knew the protocol. The addition of the advice against dying was new, though. To her. It was interesting, although, that he'd include it. Good advice, even if it was blunt. She'd wondered about the part about welcoming the new staff, too. Had he noticed the tiny incident? Possibly. The itnroduction of the creepy man who'd taken Vindictus' seat, though. That made her eyes narrow speculatively. She still had her suspicions about the dark man, and now that she knew a bit more she could do her own checking once she was back in her office. Provided he didn't suspect her as well. At least about what she had decided was their similarity.

First it seemed Mr. Gevrik wanted to make his own speech, and she settled into her seat again as he addressed the students with one sympathetic look at the Ravenclaw head of house. She'd listen to what he said, do her own silent analysis. As there was definitely hidden meaning in there, even if she hadn't exactly figured it out. Things were definitely going to be interesting this term, and she reached for her glass of water again as it seemed the time for speeches was over. Obviously Mr. Gevrik didn't want applause, so she wouldn't give it. She'd just wait for the feast, and continue to analyze everything that happened. She had her work cut out for her, definitely.

He didn't think the probability of him showing her around France was zero, even thought it was high since he hardly ever proposed an arrangement he could not commit to, but he'd learned to take every plan in life with a pinch of salt.

"Promises are pesky, little things," Jared grinned and, even though he noticed that she had said she'd try not to throw him out, he inclined his head ever so slightly, his way of saying, almost jestingly, that her statement put him at ease. It should be easier to learn something if he did not have to worry about his life. Then again, being in the presence of danger had not hindered his progress in the past. He dismissed the thoughts, choosing to think of something pleasanter, easier. Like the actual conversation. "But I think we've talked enough about Divination, for tonight. Even a professor of the subject must have other interests."

Indirectly, he had not only asked her about her interests but steered the conversation to a different topic, and he had a feeling she'd know that as well as he did.

Renée had caught the sense of confidence Jared had displayed in his response to her, as regarded hypothetical trips to France. Seeing as the one they were discussing was actually still hypothetical. She wasn't lying, though, when she'd expressed interest in visiting again. Just because she hadn't been for over seven years now didn't make that false. She smiled, however, at the statements. "Of course. And I appreciate your faith that it'll be interesting," she replied. And that word could have so many different meanings, really, and that only made her resolve to try and figure out a way to go stronger. But then, she wasn't one to suggest things lightly.

"That they can be," she said with a little laugh as he responded to her promising not to throw him out of the tower. Or try not to, as her words actually had been. She was finding she thougth she preferred him at ease more than otherwise, even though he hadn't seemed too on edge around her. Except for maybe at first when she knew he'd noticed her mental prodding. She'd idly kept it up, but it was getting to the point she didn't really think it necessary. She did think his thoughts were fascinating, however. Even as it seemed he knew he needed to channel them in different directions, which earned the slightest raise of an eyebrow.

She shrugged in response to his change of topic, though. "Of course. Layers are so much more interesting on a person than being one-dimensional. I'd imagine you have more interests than Charms as well. Well, and manticores,' she added with another laugh. The animal certainly had been in his thoughts quite a bit. But she was going to make him work a bit harder to figure her out.

Faith. Jared did, in his easygoing, detached sort of fashion, have faith in himself and his ability to entertain people, but he had never really thought about it. His confidence usually stemmed from knowing how to handle things, rather than any belief that he could handle them.

"This one sounds like it has enough loopholes to make both of us feel safe, however," he offered, a lazy little grin on his lips. He could think she'd refrain from throwing him out, she could know that she had only said she'd try. Not a bad deal.

Ah. Manticores. She had finally said it and, in doing so, confirmed at least one aspect of her personality. Jared bowed his head for a second, like a little child caught eating someone else's share of candy, but there was an amused, easygoing look in his eyes. "I do," he agreed. "Some of them being fantastically muggle, in fact."

Confidence was always intriguing to Renée. Especially when it was just there, not shoved in her face. It seemed she was lucky in that regard, then, as Jared, in all his new fascination for her, was seeming to not be the type to flaunt things. An odd similarity, it seemed, between them. Even if she was being a little more cavalier about her unspoken skills than he was. She still remembered that wall she'd hit at the beginning of their conversation. It bothered her less now, though. It was less of an issue.

She grinned at his lazy comment, however. "Loopholes are crazy like that. Next thing you know they'll be tripping us up," she replied with a shrug. She was much preferring the idea of a relaxed situation, over a tense, frustration-filled one. So as long as they continued thinking it was possible, things would roll along quite well. Even if she still thought the likelihood of her throwing him out was slim. The opening that she still had was comforting, in a way. And at least he didn't seem as odd as others at the table that she was choosing to not think of.

She hadn't even really thought of her facetious mention of the creature as an admission that she'd gotten into his head, but as he reacted she found herself laughing softly again. As if she'd been caught. Oh well. He was bound to find out at some point, as she imagined she wouldn't be able to keep it hidden forever. "Fantastically Muggle, you say?," she said as he answered her musing about interests. It seemed he was going to be just as forthcoming as she was on that matter. Give a little hint, then sit back and see what happened. It was always fun to see the reactions when people found out about her anyway.

Jake REALLY couldn't help it. He stood up as soon as Ikea sat down, and this time he kept his glasses on. The man had a way of catching his eye, and Jake did eye contact better from behind sunglasses.

"You forgot the dead kids," he added boldly, coming to a halt where he'd stopped before. Why did everyone ALWAYS forget the dead kids? There had been like four in all the time Jake had attended the school. "And sir... no offence or anything, but except for the deaths, which I take the blame for-" well... he had been weak, not fighting that stupid French man who possessed him "-Hogwarts school has always been able to deal with anything in its way." Cue another look over at Tate and Truebridge. Kazi would get one too if he was here.

"I believe there was a Tournament last year... nothing went wrong there. Year before; nothing. So, quite frankly, I don't understand why you're currently here. Two years late."

His tone of voice was the epitome of expressionlessness. He genuinely was not being rude... he was just rather confused.

"The logic evades me."

Oh... and what was that Tate had said about being rude?

"Sir."

At least now he couldn't see if the Baron was still watching him.

Well well well... hear THAT Headmaster? The girl, and NOT a Slytherin, was thanking her for everything that she taught, and was looking forward to classes. "Thank you, Miss Hollingberry. Cookies... Lovely. Please return to your seat now, and I'll see you in class soon" She said nodding to the child. Oh Oh Oh... whipped cream on the ice cream that was today? "Headmaster? Would you care for one of the cookie my Gryffindor student gifted me?"

"Baron, always a pleasure." She said to the ghost.

"I don't think he's fond of you either..." Hecate said not looking up from her glass.

Also well put. She clapped again and nodded knowingly.
Hearing a voice, Charlie replaced his glasses, and looked, rather quizzically in the direction it had come from.

"If that means he won't show up around me again, I think I'm ok with that, Miss."

"I'm pleased to know that you are building on the foundations I established with the Slytherins, Hecate. More than you know." As long as they were doing well, as long as they were strong, living up to their skills, their ambitions, as long as they were happy, then he was content.

"They can learn much from you."
"As you did," she said. She'd been his prefect and head girl after all.

Whoever this Annie was, she should count her lucky stars he had yet to propose. Why would you want to be married to someone that... daft!

Charlie smiled a bit, in a lopsided, goofy sort of way. "Good to meet you, Professor," he said, brightening.

"Charlie, Charlie Mugwort," he said, extending his hand. "Herbology." Looking down at his hand, his eyes went a little wide and he grabbed for a napkin.

"Sorry. I was working in the greenhouses and lost track of the time." He rubbed the cloth against his dirty palm before getting out his wand. A quick flick and mostly clean hands.

Snakelets? Ohh the Slytherin's, yes of course. The candy, and lack of proper food was obviously going to her head. "I will do," she nodded, glancing over at the table of green and black. "Although I'm sure I won't have any problems." Hopefully.

"Ikenna Gevrik, Special Security Liaison to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry."

One eyebrow slowly raised in question as Ikenna's gaze locked on Jake's. "And you are..?"

Hmm. A boy with one too many surnames?

Ikenna Gevrik? Special Security Liaison?

Yes, Issy was now back to eavesdropping on the conversation between a Hufflepuff boy and the mystery man. Although now he wasn't such a mystery. She knew that name. Erica had mentioned it in one of the letters she'd owled. Something about the Department Head of Security, how he was a pleasant, yet stern man. Alastair of course, wasn't privy to the big meetings, so couldn't supply any information to her. Not that she asked much anyway.

Raising her goblet up to her lips, she focussed her attention on that end of the table. Best to considering that the Headmaster looked to be about to make his speech.

SPOILER!!: Tatertot

Hmm?

Did he just ask them not to die? Interesting take on a speech, but....sound advice nonetheless. Yes, dying was not a good idea.

At the mention of new staff, Isabelle turned her head towards the throng of students and smiled broadly. Many at the back might not be able to see her, but the ones near the front might appreciate a warm greeting themselves. She was about to join in the clapping, when she realised that Vindictus was the only one doing it, so refrained. Especially as the speeches didn't appear to be over...

SPOILER!!: Ikenna 2
Quote:

Well he DID seem rather pleasant, Erica was right.

Isabelle placed her goblet back down on the table and refolded her hands in her lap. She listened intently to what the Ministry man had to say. Flooding and underground fight club? Wow. The school had certainly had some interesting terms since she left. Even more so than when she was a student. But, of course, she was a grown woman now - and something like that wouldn't have such a fun element to it as when she 15.

Again she was tempted to clap, but instead decided to just nod. Don't want to stick out as being the only one. Especially when there was FOOD to be eaten now.
