Raven get an idea now, he raised his hand before he say "Professor, how about Palmistry --the arts of reading hand print", he say it, because it's novice and common in muggle world.

Mell 01-13-2011 09:20 AM

Oooh tarot. This reminded Mia of the old lady in the commune who was always trying to tell people's fortunes with tarot cards but unfortunately she wasn't very good at it.

Mia raised her hand. "There are four suits to a tarot deck that correspond to the suits of a normal playing deck. Each of these suits has pip cards numbering from ace to ten and four cards with faces that equal a total of fourteen cards. In addition to these suits the tarot has a separate twenty one card trump suit and a single card known as the fool."

Amira With a C 01-13-2011 09:31 AM

Parke scribbled frantically, attempting to copy down the list, as well as pay attention to what the professor was saying. Multi-tasking was something he wasn't too good at. When he finished, he took a look at his notes. His eyes widened briefly. Were they to learn about all these different forms?!

Tarot? The teacher had asked about Tarot. Those were those cards. He'd taken notes on those whilst he'd been studying. He pulled his stack of notes out of his bag, looking for the Divination section. He was suddenly thankful that he'd decided to take notes on the most common forms. Ah, yes, there it was.

He took a moment to skim over his notes before raising his hand. "Tarot cards have four suits: coins, swords, wands, and cups. They're said to actually correspond directly to the four life sustaining elements, those being , carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen respectively; Which, to me at least, suggests a kind of biological connection to our life path. A tangible proof, almost, that fate and destiny are intertwined with our physical bodies..." He was rambling. How embarrassing. Of course, thinking about his embarrassment just caused him to flush severely. And right in the middle of class. In front of everyone. How undignified.

Roselyn 01-13-2011 09:33 AM

Hmm.

Well, she really was going to name off a form of Divination, but before she could raise her hand, someone already mentioned her favorite kind. And that sorta depressed her. Pssh. Which is why she sat in her seat, arms crossed, and glancing around the room to compare the difference of it from the term before. Not that much different. She still felt tired.

However, as they were beginning to move on to the next part of the lesson, the Slytherin squeezed her eyes shut for a moment before looking towards the professor. Right. Stay awake. Answering questions to stay awake. As if she could even get an answer in...eesh some of these people. Must be Ravenclaws. "Tarot cards can be dated back as far as the 1400's." she said after raising her hand before tapping her fingers on her desk and lowering her voice some to get a more mysterious effect. "Perhaps even farther than that too."

You just never know nowadays on what goes down in history and what they're missing.

Wenzlebug 01-13-2011 09:49 AM

Once again, Ced's hand flew up in the air as soon as the professor finished speaking. He knew some about Tarot. They had studied it before anyway. "The tarot cards' meanings vary from deck to deck though what a card symbolizes and its element stay just the same," Cedric paused, not just for the heck of it but rather for breathing, for he got more to say, "it's certainly and essentially the mood and symbolism of a card that must be interpreted. I think we can pretty much trust or, let even, our intuition to convey what a tarot card particularly say."

She had read about tarot cards. She was a bit cynical about divination, but she was intending on doing her best, so she read anything she thought might come to be of importance. She raised her hand again. "Different readers of tarot cards will look and interpret tarot cards differently, with their own perspective." She said.

Freya copied the list of Divination to her notes. Wooo..There are a lot of form of Divination there. She sighed and put her quill down. She heard Professor Bishop asking about Tarot. Oh they going to learn about tarot?Yay..!! She raised her hand before saying "Tarot cards are a set of 78 cards that is used for occult purposes. The cards were divided into two parts. The Major Arcana and The Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana cards are thought of as the "power" cards in a tarot reading, while the Minor Arcana serve in supportive roles and augment the reading with further insight and detail of circumstances."

It had been Professor Nolan's lesson last term that had led Patroclus on the road to a further study of the magic of Tarot and there was one particular bit of information that he found rather interesting and thought worthy of sharing.

"Professor, the tarot deck known as the Tarot de Marseille" Patroclus pronounced in his rarely used native french, "or the Tarot of Marseilles was a tarot deck that has been traced back as far as the 15th centuary, and is seen by many to be the basis on which most of the recent Tarot patterns have been based. It was this deck that was first introduced the most English-speaking Tarot readers by the French." Patroclus was half french, on his Mother's side so he was proud of this little fact.

Vive la France!

And we're talking about cards again which was not as interesting as interpreting dreams but it was more interesting than Runes anyways- no offence to the nice professor. So, Tarot cards are known to Louisa. "I read, Professor, that long ago there was someone who thought that the word Tar was coming from the Egyptian word "Royal" and ro was coming from the word "Pathways" which makes it "Royal pathways" to wisdom in that man's opinion." Pause. "I remember his name. He was Gebelin." She added thoughtfully. "Yet, further researches didn't approve of Gebelin's study and found out that the Gypsies were the one who introduced Tarot cards to Europe rather than the Egyptians." See? She loved reading historical books ^__^

"There's more than just one type of deck when it comes to Tarot cards," Jamie said her hand in the air.

Felixir 01-13-2011 01:37 PM

Sand... sand right in his bed.

In his food, too.

Oh, Jake would do it.

But right now he raised his hand and saiiiidddddd... "The pictures... like, MEAN something. There's pictures of people but of THINGS as well. Like... the Tower. The Tower is my favourite one."

Jake glanced very briefly at Treyen. If he so much a MOVED HIS HEAD, he would wake up in a sandpit.

Emily contemplated the Professor's question....
She had accidently insulted a fellow Ravenclaw the previous night when she engaged herself in a discussion about Tarot cards/ divination and since then had thought it best to keep an open mind and learn as much about the vast subject as she could.
Emily raised her hand, thinking she had a valid point to contribute to the class.
"The traditional symbolism found on Tarot cards have evolved over time. This has been doen to reflect particular beliefs of their creators. Examples of modified and modernised Tarot Decks include: The Rider-Waite-Smith deck, Crowley-Harris Thoth deck, the Mythic Tarot- which uses classical symbolism found in Greek mythology, and the Hermetic Tarot......... these decks have been modified in a number of ways, such as rearanging the ranks of particular cards, and the symbolism used on said decks, e.g. astrological symbolism, zodiacal symbolism, alchemical symbolism, and elemental symbolism."

Claire raised her hand....
"Um... the interpretation of Tarot cards is determined through the combination of cards and the order in which they are drawn from the deck as well as thier specific meanings based on the symbolism on the card iteself."

Simon looked at the Professor and raised his hand. "Well Tarot must be a ship because your talking about a deck, I've never heard of anything else use a deck." Simon thought hard but he couldn't of anything else that used a deck. "Well it depends on what type of ship that you are talking about though what a ship has to do with Divination, unless it is a ghost ship."

vijaya 01-13-2011 02:14 PM

Lucy was on it, she was all in this class as she really loved Divination, and she heard the Professor asking about the facts of Tarot. She did actually like the cards but only knew about a little bit of them and thought to express it to the class. She didn't know if that's actually right but then she had to say so she nervously raised her hand and said "Professor, Tarot is a window through which one can learn to see the future. It is best if one considers Tarot as a mirror that deeply and, for its funs, accurately reflects the feeling, dreams, thoughts and aspirations of a person." she said and paused to see what the Professor had to say about that.

jengirls109 01-13-2011 02:53 PM

Jaina thought about this long and hard. "Um, Professor, there is a Death Card and I know it's bad to get that one, but it could be good, too. Like if it's upside down it means change, right?" She had no idea, but it was worth a shot. She was glad that Annabelle was next to her. It meant that if something went wrong, someone had her back.

He was nodding....until he wasn't anymore.

Tarot cards. That was...so Nolan. And he wasn't here. Treyen froze in place, remembering about the class, and Peeves, and how he made one card of Saylen. Man, he had a hard time trying to get back into what Bishop was saying. Good thing he knew a bit more about the subject thanks to last year, but it was still a good thing to listen to whatever the Professor said, right? In case she was actually dismissing the class instead of asking them something related to...er, tarot cards in this case.

The boy blinked before gaining power over his ears.

And he hoped he hadn't. Why was Jake taking Divination anyway?

Yourenodaisy 01-13-2011 04:23 PM

Tarot cards? they totally had this lesson last year. Emmaleigh smiled at the incredibly fascinating subject. The young puff raised her hand to share her knowledge. "I believe professor Reynolds said A pack of regular playing cards can be used for the minor arcana, although, There are 56 cards in the minor arcana, and only 52 in a regular deck." She paused. "Maybe he said that they were similar?" she thought, before continuing her explanation. "And each suit in the minor arcana has a corresponding suit in the playing cards. The Pentacles matches the diamonds, the Staves and clubs go together, The Cups and Hearts, and then the Swords and Spades."

Ronnie sighed, she didn't know the answer to this one. She wasn't sure if she should even guess to try and get the right answer...well better to try. At least then she could possibly get points.

" I think it's is a pack of cards, there are normally 78 card in the deck. Right?" Ronnie asked hoping that she wasn't making a fool of herself with the wrong answer.

Bennet tried to recall anything he'd learned about Tarot cards from his readings. Raising his hand, he contributed, "The layout or spread of Tarot cards can be just as significant as the cards themselves. There are a wide variety of layouts, which give different information and insight to the person performing the reading. Some popular layouts include the Five Card Spread, The Ellipse Spread, The Celtic Cross, The Mirror Spread, The Mandala Spread, and the The Relationship Spread, to name a few."

Sheridan had been doodeling for the past ten minutes in her notebook, and paying little attention to the others, but had jotted down the list in her notebook, next to her little Justin being killed/maimed/tortured doodles, she put her hand up, uhh Tarot cards are meant to..umm, like predict the future...and stuff, she trailed off lamely.

She hoped Hendricks wasn't in the room then otherwise she was dog meat, but she carried on you need to select more than one card to predict the future she nodded, cuz otherwise the prediction can be confused, like if you had a skeleton with something else it could be positive, but if you have it on it's own it can be confused for a negative future

AliciaWeasley 01-13-2011 04:32 PM

Alicia walked into the classroom reluctantly. It wasn't because she hated the class or anything as she had never known what Divination class was all about. She was raised in muggle ways so she had never heard such thing as Divination. She was extremely tired as she just returned to the castle this morning. However, she would try to behave nicely in class. "Hello Professor!" She greeted her warmly. "Sorry, I'm late. I just got back this morning. I was sent home for a few days. Umm.. Family matters." She apologized for her major lateness. Alicia did hope that Professor Bishop would still let her join the class.

"There are two types of arcana cards; minor and major. The minor cards hold number cards and then the court cards like a normal playing cards. Violet was smiling as Professor Bishop began talking to them about Divination. She was very enthused as she was writing down the list on the boar the Professor had written. Violet's eyes widened when Professor Bishop mentioned Tarot cards, she knew about Tarots. She then raised her hand and said brightly,"Tarot cards were used by Mystics and Occultists in an effort at Divination or as a map of mental and spiritual pathways!" Violet smiled brightly at Professor Bishop again.

The Grey Lady 01-13-2011 06:15 PM

Runic Divination!? This had caught Pandora's interest greatly. She raised her hand though, to answer the question that was currently being asked.

"The Tarot is the most practised art of Divination. They've been used for hundreds of years to find hidden truths and see the future of the person receiving the card reading."

So, it wasn't as elaborate as the other students, and it probably wasn't right, but it worked for her.

Great...Tarot cards.

Not that Simon had anything against them and he hadn't done to bad with them in homework and class but they had been the focus of the Divination OWL. The OWL he had failed in and he wasn't sure if he was cut out for interpretting them well. At the professor's question, he thought back to the previous year's study to anything that he could remember that hadn't been mentioned already and eventually raised his hand.

"There are thousands of different decks available catering to many diverse interests from the chocolate tarot to the Renaissance tarot," he answered lowering his hand to listen to the rest and take notes.

Luin jotted down all of the fields of divination as well as their meaning and then smiled, realizing the one type she knew a bit more about was what they were going to be talking about. After the professor asked the question, she quickly raised her hand, "The tarot has four suits: Coins, Wands, Cups and Swords. Each of these suits has pip cards from ace to ten and four face cards for a total of 14 cards. In addition, the tarot is distinguished by a separate 21-card trump suit and a single card known as the Fool. The Fool can act as the top trump or may be played to avoid following suit. The trump cards and the Fool are called "the major arcana" while the ten pip and four court cards in each suit are called "minor arcana"."

Completing their divination list, as established by the students, Renée turned back to the students who'd spoke about tarot cards with another smile. "It seems you might be a bit hopeful about that subject," she said to the two who had mentioned them by name, before turning back to the class as a whole. "Cartomancy, or its similar cousin Taromancy, is quite the delicate study. As was mentioned, it can most commonly be considered reading cards, Taromancy being more specific to the Tarot while basic cartomancy can use any form of cards. Actually, most common is a basic deck of Muggle playing cards. And there's another offshoot that simply uses what are known as oracle decks, which is a bit more, well specific than either divination with playing cards or Tarot cards," she said, moving slightly toward the bookshelf as she spoke. If anyone was curious, she could explain their uses as well, but at a later time.

"For now, let's stick with the basics, though," she continued. "Maybe with the Tarot." And her discussion was turning a bit more casual, it seemed. "Does anyone want to offer a fact or two about the Tarot? Anything about the specific cards in the deck, or whatever else you can think of." Then maybe they could look into the correlation between that deck and the others. It would depend on what she got right now.

ooc: As usual, try to stick with only one fact, etc. per post. Let others get a word in. :) Try not to get too into chats as well and things will continue later. With more fun.

Selina beamed when she was awarded house points. She made a mental note to write her Uncle and tell him that he had given her information that she used in class to impress the teacher.

When the teacher inquired about tarrot cards she listened to all of the answers around her once more. They all seemed to be saying the same thing- that they were a method to predict the future. Selina wasn't sure it was just that. She remembered growing up she had heard something else about them. Then she remembered.

"Excuse me, ma'am? Tarrot cards, they've been used for hundreds of years to help predict the future, even back to Ancient Egypt is I remember correctly. But aren't their four suits? The wands, the swords, the coins, and the cups. Similar to average playing cards they have ten numbered cards in each suit... but four in the court The numbers and court members all stand for something. Tarrot cards in this manner were originally used in high society as a game for bored women.

"But their is another type, right? More magical in meaning and can foretell the future much more accurately. I'm not sure exactly what they are composed of, but one of the cards in the deck is The Devil. I know that for sure." Selina ended sitting back down. She was not going to elaborate anymore she had already said too much.

Elektra's head was hurting. Too much info at once for her. Listening to Selina speak made Elektra's head spin and she rubbed it and just had a slight confused look on her and she thought to herself. Ok, Selina before my head explodes. It's bad enough that I can't understand Charms. Don't make me not understand Divination. Elektra just now stared at her parchment and then once Selina sat down Elektra just gave a look to her.

He could recall that these were popular during the time and quite often used, perhaps of the most popular used forms of Divination, after Cyclomancy maybe. "Professor," He began with his hand raised, "the deck is divided into two parts, I believe. The Major and Minor Arcana. The Major includes cards like the fool, the lovers, the sun, and so on. I think there are twenty or maybe twenty two total. There are more Minor Arcana cards, something around fifties, I believe, and those are separated into subcategories, too." So he didn't know that many details, but hopefully this would suffice.

Even with mention of the previous professor, Renée was pleased that people were still offering answers. She wasn't about to say it to anyone, as right now that would just make things more difficult, but she wasn't surprised that Professor Reynolds would have discussed the Tarot as well. It was a shared preference. But she needed to get back to the lesson at hand, and she sent a smile to the class. "You all seem to have some idea of what the Tarot is, its history, how it's used. As was mentioned, the Tarot is a set of cards used for divinatory purposes. Although originally the use of the Tarot was considered more of a game, introduced, yes, by the Tarot de Marseille, which originated in Italy in the fifteenth century and traveled to France around 1499, its usage has changed somewhat. We'll discuss layouts and so forth a bit later, Mr. Owlwraith. And Mr. Hudson is also true when he states that that Tarot, the design of it, is the basis of many of the current decks that exist today." Pausing, she glaced over at Louisa. "Antoine de Gébelin did write a treatise stating the origins of the Tarot as Egyptian, in 1781, which is established as the start of the modern period. However, he didn't deny the Gypsies their role in the spread of Tarot. Actually, he did say the Gypsies brought it to Europe, but that they were descendants of the ancient Egyptians. There have been subsequent authors who have challenged his theory, though."

But back to the cards themselves, as their history only subtly affected their use. "Anyway, as many of you said, the Tarot consists of 78 cards in total. 56 in the Minor Arcana, which by the way is also known as the Royal Arcana, and in essence, they are what correspond to regular playing cards. Wands to clubs, coins or pentacles to diamonds, cups to hearts, swords to spades. However, Tarot introduces a fourth suit card, the Knight." Explaining that discrepancy away.

"Well it depends on what type of ship that you are talking about though what a ship has to do with Divination, unless it is a ghost ship."

Renée paused in her explanation as the little Hufflepuff spoke again, and sent him another grin. "No, sadly, there aren't any ships involved with the Tarot. It's a deck of cards, but I'd imagine people have brought them onto ships in the past. Travelers have just as much need of Divination as everyone else, don't you think?," she replied. The boy blinked before gaining power over his ears.

And he hoped he hadn't. Why was Jake taking Divination anyway?

Who on earth CARED which was his favorite picture? Because that's what he meant, his favorite picture, not his favorite card.

He rolled his eyes before realizing Jake was looking his way, and raised his hand, "Excuse me, Profesor," he said, before turning back to Jake, "Well, yes, Jake, those pretty pictures of yours are there to symbolize the meaning of the card. Like, The Tower will usually have a drawing of a tower to represent the card, or something that relates to it." Oh, yes, he was mocking him, alright?

Ready to head back into her discussion of the Minor Arcana, Renée was distracted by a bit of friction between the other two Hufflepuffs she had been intending to keep an eye on. She hadn't missed Treyen's reaction to the topic, but it seemed taking it out on Jake was a bit off. Even if she was the slightest bit grateful it seemed he wasn't taking it out on her anymore. "Yes, Jake. Tarot not only depicts people, but there are a few that depict other concepts," she replied, with a glance at Treyen as it seemed they were using significator cards against each other. "We'll discuss that in a moment." First things first, and she hoped there wouldn't be any more interruptions.

She apologized for her major lateness. Alicia did hope that Professor Bishop would still let her join the class.

Of course, that hope seemed unfounded, as she watched a girl choose now to enter the lesson. Inwardly sighing, she smiled briefly at the Gryffindor. "I thank you for the apology, but since the lesson has begun I'll need to take a point from Gryffindor. You're welcome to join us, however, if you can pick up the discussion," she said politely. It was up to her, but she was going to get back to her discussion. After glancing once again at the spot near the wall, as if she expected a response from the invisible.

"Anyway, back to the Minor Arcana," she finally said, getting herself back on track. Selina after her outburst from earlier raised her hand once more, "Excuse me Professor? Isn't The Lovers another one? I remember seeing it in an old muggle movie with my grandfather. It was made back over seventy years ago or so."

It's a deck of cards, but I'd imagine people have brought them onto ships in the past. Travelers have just as much need of Divination as everyone else, don't you think?," she replied. Now perhaps they could get back to the discussion at hand, although she had to admit she was amused by his answers. At least he was trying.

"The Major Arcana, in contrast, are the 'big secrets', important milestones, events that we can't control, changes and growth. There are 22 cards inthe Major Arcana, all of which are associated with Spirit as their element and are numbered zero through twenty-one. Jake and Treyen seem to have given us three of the cards already, but would anyone else like to provide any of the others?

Simon looked at the Professor. "I do think so." Simon couldn't believe that he had got another one wrong but at least he was trying and he knew the next question, that was easy sure this was the right answer he couldn't get this one wrong. "Professor there are famous witches and wizard card you get them from chocolate frogs." Simon was hoping he was right, he was confident that he had got it wrong. "There cards right and since Tarots are cards maybe they are part of the same thing."

Elektra was about to say exactly what Selina said and Elektra quickly put her hand down and she huffs. Gaaaah that is the only one I know! She gave another look to Selina and then just sat back and just wrote. That was the best shot she had in this class at this point.

Isobel raised her hand. "Professor, isn't there a page card?" The only thing she knew about Tarot cards were from books, and she wasn't sure if that was real or not...

Amira With a C 01-13-2011 10:51 PM

Parke raised his hand. "Death is one." Also the most understood card, apparently. This class wasn't too bad. What a relief

Patroclus felt very chuffed with himself, when Professor Bishop mentioned him in her explaination.

However Patroclus was less chuffed when a young Lioness arrived late, yes it was due to family issues, but still he made a mental note to chat to Professor Donovan about it later. Returning to the lesson, Patroclus raised his hand, "Professor the power of the Christian church was seen to affect even the Major Arcana deck, for certain cards were renamed for Chrisitian bases societies, for example what was usually called the 'Death' card was sometimes swapped to be the 'Grim Reaper' and like-wise with 'The Hierophant' which changed to the 'The Pope'"

Yep Yep, Patroclus knew his cards!

Luinevaug 01-13-2011 11:00 PM

Luin took quick notes on the details that the professor elaborated on and then started to jot down the answers already given about the major arcana.

Quote:

Fool, Devil, Tower, High priestess, World, Lovers, Death
She then raised her hand to mention another card, "There is also a major arcana card called The Hanged Man."

Imsosikk07 01-13-2011 11:02 PM

Elektra tried to think then she raised ehr hand and just took a shot at the answer now. "Uhmm I think there is one called the Angel, but I could be wrong. I took a guess." she said with a slight chuckle.

So, Jake considered that for a moment. "Well, if you mean reversed, then... yes, I agree." With a bit of it. Like, not the emotional blackmail. Jake couldn't do that.

Couldn't argue with the truth.

"There should be a card for 'arrogant little brat', Professor. Don't you agree?" Jake stated, raising his hand again.

Totally innocent suggestion.

Eyebrow raised again.

In all fairness, whatever his sister seems to think about this boy couldn't be far from reality, she needed her mind checked, for sure. All those Bludgers were to blame.

"Unfortunately, no, not reversed." And he didn't miss the last thing Jake said either. Perhaps he ought to try out for Beater and aim a Bludger at his head. Take out the Seeker, no?

The boy was raising his hand, like for the eleventh time since class started, or since the discussion started and shook his head, "I think it quite egoistic of Mr. Morgan to be thinking of having his own card made."

But then he added more, "There is also 'The Emperor', which I personally find interesting for its nature of controlling the uncontrollable." Which in this case, will be Bishop. She won't gain control over the things she couldn't, right?

ArianaBlack 01-13-2011 11:10 PM

Nika was very excited because she finally knew how to answer one of the questions! Nika raised her hand eagerly awaiting to be called on to give her answer when it was her turn she said confidently I remember reading about these cards in a book. I believe there is one for strength and I also recall that there is one for justice. Nika beamed because she knew that she had given a good answer alas all that reading paid of.

Roselyn 01-13-2011 11:19 PM

Really, she needed to find a better way to... well...

Couldn't they play with fire or something!?

Lazily writing down a few notes, the Slytherin rubbed her eyes and blinked a few times before taking a deep breath and sitting up straight. She really didn't want to, but, she could feel her concentration slipping gradually as the minutes ticked by. Hmm, maybe if she scooted a little closer to Josh, she'd stay awake. Teehee.

"There is the Hermit card." she said simply after raising her hand. Yup, she remembered that one. Used it for one of her assignments. Quite a self explanatory card.

Felixir 01-13-2011 11:23 PM

LOL, that was a nice touch. I... think I'll stop now.

Not reversed? Well that was just odd. "I think you need to re-observe the meanings of the cards, Lockhart," Jake said neutrally. Security? Maybe... but the rest? He had no material desire or lust or any of that... but things like uncontrolled ambition, true evil and being bonded to certain situations (like his third year...)

Poor little Lockhart. So naiive and, quite frankly- wait, what?

That little...

He had just BETTER wait for tryouts. Jake would knock him off his broom.

And incorporate sand into that somehow.

"You misinterpreted me," he said simply, and sat back in his chair. HE wouldn't say another one. He'd already given the professor two. He'd give others a chance.

For now, he'd silently scrunch up a page of parchment. He'd get the boy on his way out if anything.

Jake_Lockley8672 01-13-2011 11:28 PM

Jamie raised her hand,"There is The Moon card. It's card number eighteen and it has the meanings of dreams and psychic impressions when upright but the reverse is deception."it was one of her favorite cards...if you could have a favorite.

"The Hermit," Sierra suggested, her hand raised high in the air.

She didn't think anyone had said that one yet. She hoped not, at least. She also didn't really know what 'The Hermit' meant when it came to Divination and tarot cards, but she'd at least heard of a hermit crab before. Sooo not the same thing, or anywhere close to being the same thing, but at least it'd helped her remember one of the cards' names.

Lowering her hand, she returned to absentmindedly twirling a lock of her hair with her fingers while she waited for the lesson to continue.

XxPandoraXx 01-13-2011 11:52 PM

Pandora raised her hand. "There is 'The Tower' card, professor. It is the sixteenth trump card in a deck. It always comes after 'The Devil' card, and is considered a bad omen. When it is right side up, it can be interpreted as failure, ego, and false pretenses."

Fira 01-13-2011 11:54 PM

Tarot cards. Hehehehe. Josh knew most of them. So he moved a little and raised his hand to mention one Major Arcana card ''Professor...'' the Gryffindor said kindly, a little smile appearing on his face ''...there's also The Sun!'' then he looked at Evelyn to see what she was doing. Oh, if only the professor told them to perform a tarot card reading. Josh would intently perform a reading for Evelyn.

Bennet tried to suggest a card that hadn't already been mentioned, "Temperance? Isn't that one?" Bennet hoped he hadn't made that up. He flipped to the index of his Divination text looking for explanation of the Major Arcana to confirm his answer.

Honestly, Selena was lost when it came to tarots. She only found the cards pretty and she couldn't even remember the names of half of them. Still, she struggled to remember one of the few she could. "I think the moon is one of them..?" Selena said uncertainly after raising her hand. She couldn't quite remember.

The Grey Lady 01-14-2011 12:37 AM

"The Magician?" Pandora asked, her hand raised. Well, it seemed to be the one that most fit everyone didn't it? Technically witches and wizards were magicians since they performed magic..

Pandora retained a chuckle, focusing on the lesson. Oh her and her frivilous mind.

Seriously? How would he know. Legend yawned then raised his hand. "The...erm....Pig. Yeah it symbolized....being a pig? Or like...the he Hanged Man. Yeah i'll go with that." Yeah, like there would really be a card for that. Could he go to sleep now?

Hermiedlyn Granjoy 01-14-2011 12:53 AM

ooh.. Tarot Cards. uhmm i know one..Edlyn raised her hand quickly.

"Professor, the Sword? it is associated by mind and truth . It represents our mind and al the inherent in them.
This also includes our rational thought, our ability to learn and remember, our consciousness and awareness and our perceptions. The suit points to our abilities to consider, to contrast and compare, to weigh the evidence, and to make a decision. It signifies our insights and awareness, our ability to inquire, analyze, synthesize and investigate. It also represents legal arrangements: contracts, leases, agreements, purchase documents and the like. Likewise, it can symbolize the legal, political and judicial systems - the courts, the laws at every level and the governance dominanting one's environment. " Edlyn finished her answer half breathing. She's not sure if it's correct but she tried it anyway.

While Professor Bishop and the other students continued with the discussion, Charley wrote down all of the forms on the extended list, checking before each one to ensure she spelled them all correctly. Divination was definitely not one of her better subjects. She planned to study each form later, and to transcribe their definitions and uses.
There is always a way to be better. If I take good notes and pay close to attention-to Professor Bishop, anyway-I know I can do well in this class.
Good for you. I gave up on Divination and Ancient Runes after first year because I didn't do well. Too confusing for me, Henry interjected, proving he was always able to find when to pop into her thoughts.
I can't imagine why, Charley responded sarcastically. Now can you quit interrupting during classes? I actually need to learn all of this stuff, Henry.
Yeah, yeah. I'll try to reach you another time. Write the times you should be free in your next letter, okay?
Well, I don't exactly know when that really is; I've been here a week. But I'll put my schedule down, so you have some idea.
Okay, okay. Take good notes, kid! I know you can do well. Love you, Charley.
Thanks, I love you too, Henry, she responded, and found herself nearly drained of energy. She'd forgotten how hard it was to censor her thoughts so much. She had to, of course, with her brother seeing in. She wondered if Professor Bishop knew anything about thought projection.
Maybe I'll ask after class, she decided, knowing it was definitely not a good idea to ask during class. Time to learn more about tarot cards.
She began to jot down the names of all the cards she heard her classmates mentioning.

sweetpinkpixie 01-14-2011 03:05 AM

Kurumi raised her hand again. "Professor, I believe there is Judgement. It's number 20 in the deck. I've read that its design and form is based on the Christian belief of the Last Judgement." Kurumi paused for a moment to gather her thoughts. "I believe that it represents pending judgments or undecided decisions. Since it also could represent ressurection, it may also be interpretated as the return of someone or something from your past."

Starbreeze 01-14-2011 03:18 AM

Eino raised his hand, feeling very eager to participate, "There is also The Empress, which I believe is associated with fertility, maternity, and beauty." He shared and quickly returned to his quill and parchment to take very detailed and specific notes on the various answers shared by his classmates and the Professor's responses and elaborations. He was hoping the professor would hand out tarot cars and teach them how to read them, now that would be fun!

Buggy-Boo 01-14-2011 03:50 AM

"Professor there is the Lovers card, which is number 6...I think.." Ronnie added. She couldn't believe how brave she was being talking up in class. Usually she didn't talk becuase then people would look at her...and umm..when alot of people looked at her she usually had one of her episodes...that was never good.

She was scared she was going to have one everytime she went to a class. She didn't want to make a secne, plus then she would miss the lesson. She pulled a note out of her pocket...scared knowing she was going to have to give it to the professor after class.

Tazenhani 01-14-2011 05:52 AM

Sabel had been listening quietly, tapping his quill off his paper as he listened. When it came to asking about the Major Arcane, most of them were already listed. "There's cared 7, the Chariot, otherwise known as the Child of the Powers of the Waters and the Lord of the Triumph of Light." Rather epic names. "Perhaps having to do with light and water, in the form of overcoming adversaries or challenges and moving forward, as water moves past it's barriers and light comes from the hope of success." Seemed rather fitting for some circumstances, especially those graduating this year. Though the light in that case was debatable and not something he wanted to think about at the moment.

Ikenna Gevrik 01-14-2011 05:58 AM

Hufflepuffs. Ha!

Smirking ever so slightly, Ikenna rubbed at his goatee from his corner of the classroom and slowly shifted his weight from one foot to the other.

It was not noticeable, for he was still invisible, but he had also turned his attention from watching the professor to watching the classroom.

After all, he was here for..........the children.

Zoning out.... thats like meditating right? Whichever is the case, thats the only thing the Slytherin lad was doing since he laid eyes on the Divinations Professor. The discussion seemed to him like birds chirping and bees buzzing-- he could hear them not necessarily understand them

After all he is Slytherin, shouldnt he be more partial to Parseltongue?

Ah but the lovely brunette in front of the class started to speak about the Major Arcana and Salander suddenly remembered the homework from last term, "Uh there's the Elephant...." then paused. No that wasnt it, there were no large grey mammals in there "Uhm I mean, there's something called the Pope?"

Freya listened carefully as Professor Bishop explaining to them about the History of Tarot and the deck. Then the Professor mentioned about major arcana, she remembered some of them it's kinda hard to forget if your mother kept talking about it every time. She raised her hand before answering the question "There's the Lover, Professor." she paused for a moment "is the sixth trump of the Major Arcana card and it represents relationships and choices" she added.

Seemed rather fitting for some circumstances, especially those graduating this year. Though the light in that case was debatable and not something he wanted to think about at the moment.

Renée gave the class another smile as at least half of them had shot thier hands up and offered the names of cards in the Major Arcana. Instinctively, she knew it was probably due to them having learned them before, at least in the case of the older students. But then, that was part of why she'd decided to teach it in the first lesson. The Tarot was one of the easier forms of Divination to grasp, and possibly one of the least frustrating. At least, less frustrating when one wasn't dealing with what seemed to be a mini-insurrection and invisible onlookers. Either way, she wasn't going to falter. "Good job," she replied to those who had answered, ading each one to the list that had already been started. "It seems you all remember quite a bit, and an extra point to those who decided to go into a bit of detail," she added. Not to make those who hadn't feel bad, but just to give a bit of a reward to those who had felt the need.

Renée gave another little special smile to the little Huffie who had been so amusing, as he had tried his hardest to continue to answer. But maybe you could try and set up your own oracular cards using them. There is a theory that any cards can be used for some form of Divination," she replied to him gently. It would certainly be an interesting project. It was something to think about, maybe later in the term.

This also includes our rational thought, our ability to learn and remember, our consciousness and awareness and our perceptions. Totally innocent suggestion.

Poor little Lockhart. So naiive and, quite frankly- wait, what?

That little...

He had just BETTER wait for tryouts. Jake would knock him off his broom.

And incorporate sand into that somehow.

"You misinterpreted me," he said simply, and sat back in his chair. HE wouldn't say another one. He'd already given the professor two. He'd give others a chance.

For now, he'd silently scrunch up a page of parchment. He'd get the boy on his way out if anything.

"Jake, the Tarot is not intended to be used as a way of insulting people," she said calmly, for the moment ignoring Treyen's comment about the arrogance of making new cards even though it had been addressed to her. People created their own forms of oracular cards all the time, so the egotism wasn't really the point. However, she did raise an eyebrow slightly at his following response. That was the strike she'd been waiting for. "Yes. The Emperor is part of the Major Arcana. And in fact one interpretation of it can be the attempt to control the uncontrollable, or the need to accept that some things are not worth controlling. It also represents the masculine principle, balanced against the feminine principle represented by the Empress, as well as stability," she responded, before finally continuing her path toward the bookshelf an picking up one of the wrapped items that had been lying there, flicking her wand to finish off the list that had begun.

Turning back to the class, package in hand, she took a breath before heading back to her desk. "Now that we've gotten that established, why don't we get into a bit about the spreads, as Mr. Owlwraith brought up earlier. Nika smiled all that reading did pay off. She was finally able to earn some points for her house. She quickly took her quill and some spare parchment out of her bag and started to scribble down the different Major Arcana tarot cards. Heather wanted to take a guess so bad. She had a guess. Oh well she would try anyway. She raised her hand. "Many people in different cultures consider a cross to be some sort of sacrifice or belief. Does it stand for inspiration or protection, possibly death?" She asked.

BearyMay 01-14-2011 09:51 AM

Dianna listened to every single answer to the Professor's question. She wasn't very good in Divination but she wasn't bad either.

"Um..Because it can give you great insight into your environment, your hopes and fears, and your potential and it is simple, but powerful. They say a strong energy has built up around this spread due to its use by so many people over the years... Also the cross itself is a free-standing cross and has been used extensively as grave markers." she said as she lowered her hand.

Emily's hand shot up again, she was eager to earn her house points.
"The Celtic cross spread is particularly popular because the layout of the cards is quite simple and is also powerful. The layout is best described in two sections, firstly there is the cross which is made up of the first six cards, then there is whats known as the staff which is made up of cards seven to ten.
The central part of the cross relates to what is most important to you at the time of the reading, the larger cross referrs to your movement from past to future - left to right, and your unconscious to your conscious mind - bottom to top. The staff which form a line on the right hand side represents your life."

Listening quietly and yet intently, at the professor's interesting lecture, Elle shot her hand up the moment she asked a question.

"In the Celtic Christian world it was put together with the Christian cross and this design was often used for high crosses – a free-standing cross from stone. It is often used for funerary purposes and possessed a great deal of energy, plus magic. The Celtic Cross was and is used to express everyone's white pride," She answered.

Lucy was listening in the class very attentively as she was really interested to learn about the cards. She didn't really like them but she lovely to know a bit more about them. As the class was on professor asked a question to the class. Lucy knew this one but she was nervous, she didn't want to say anything wrong in the class. but then she decided to tell so she raised her hand and said "Professor, the most common spread happens to be the Celtic Cross, because it's the oldest and most popular pattern for reading the tarot, they are simple, but powerful. A strong energy has built up around this spread due to its use by so many people over the years." she said and paused to know what professor had to tell on that.

Helena raised her hand. "There are ten cards used, with five arranged in a cross and four placed vertically beside the cross and another one is placed horizontally across the central cards of the cross," she said, barely breathing, remembering something she read a few days ago from a book. "Also, each card has a different meaning."

Thank goodness for books. Bennet was so much better in subjects that weren't heavy in spell work. He was only average in those subjects, but in classes that allowed for a student to do reading before class and truly understand concepts, Bennet was a star. Divination happened to be one such subject, which was why he enjoyed it so much. And why he bothered to actually read ahead of time. Although, this question required more thought than regurgitation.

Raising his hand, Bennet offered, "Perhaps this spread is so popular because it mirrors the duality of life - the masculine and feminine. The circle represents the feminine, while the staff represents the masculine, and the unity of the two in one spread represents the balance of the human mind and experience. Such duality is a belief of many cultures, which would explain why many Tarot users would appreciate a spread that conveys that tenet.

"On another note, the vast number of cards in the spread probably makes it easier for a beginner because it gives them more information to aid in the interpretation, as opposed to smaller spread readings which require more intuitive familiarity with the context and meaning of each card, intuition that a beginner might not yet have developed."

Kurumi pondered the thought for a moment. There had to be some difference between the Celtic Cross and the cross she had seen all the time on Catholic churches. The biggest difference was that circle in the center, that surely had to be the key. "Professor, I've read in some books that what makes the Celtic Cross special and unique from the one that is used in Christianity is the circle. I believe that it means eternity that emphasizes the endlessness of God’s love or it could represent a halo and therefore the unending mystery of how through the crucifixion and resurrection Christ continues to offer the hope of salvation to the faithful throughout all time." Kurumi paused, she wasn't really sure what this had to do with Divination other than the circle was invoking divine powers and intervention. "Not only that, but it is much older than the Christian cross and therefore evokes a much deeper and ancient magic. So,perhaps in using this particular spreed we are tapping into much more ancient forms of Divination...that are more powerful?"

Oh The Celtic Cross Tarot spread? Freya raised her hand "Because The Celtic Cross Tarot spread is the most simple and the easiest to get the results you want for the most questions, whether it be a love query or life direction the Celtic Cross has the when, where, and why to all." she said.

Parke flipped through his notes once again. Not that they had a direct answer to the professor's question. He hated questions like this. There was no factual answer. He read through is notes one last time before hesitating slightly, and then raising his hand. "I'm assuming its popularity has to do with the spread's ability to cover many different angles or aspects of a given situation in great detail. It gives the asker, for lack of a better term, a complete analysis of his or her situation based on past events, self imposed restrictions, the asker's environment, etc and details possible outcomes." Spreads, for the life of her, Emmaleigh couldn't remember if they had talked about them in class last term, or if her knowledge came from her outside reading. She didn't know why the celtic cross spread was so popular, but she did know a little about it. She raised her hand before beginning. "Could it be popular because the spread is useful for general readings about the past and future and stuff, like the three card spread, and because it can be used for specific questions as well. Or maybe because it can be modified a little bit." She added

Violet smiled and did a little cheery dance for herself, by keeping her arms close to her and shaking them a little like she had maracas in her hands. She giggled to herself a little bit after she had done so and went back to paying attention. Violet then finished writing the other names of the Tarot Cards completing her list. Then she put her pointer finger on her chin and began to think about what the Professor was asking.

Not right now, and not when she'd hoped he had come to the conclusion it was better to simply go along with things than fight them. Of course, she wasn't about to let his war of words with Jake continue much longer either, as it could get distracting to the others if it kept going.

"Never said it was, Professor, with all due respect," Jake shrugged. It had been TREYEN who brought up that Jake was actually referring to somebody, and Jake never said that the card was directed at Treyen.

Even if he did think it.

Oooh, what had she just picked up? Something to throw at Treyen? Jake could help with that.

Jake raised his hand. "No idea, but hey, worth a shot, right? Maybe because the position of the cards means something? Like... up, down, left, right and middle... If... that's what the Celtic Cross thing is. But yeah, so the different places could mean past, present or future. And then maybe what could have happened, uhhh... telling what someone thinks of something, or how they would approach a situation?"

Maybe?

Luin quickly wrote down all of the cards in the major arcana on her parchment and then wrote down "Celtic Cross". She though of the question for a bit and then raised her hand, "The Celtic Cross spread has survived so long and is so popular because the layout of the cards is simple, but powerful. It's a good one to use when you have a specific question that needs to be answered, because it takes you, step by step, through all the different aspects of the situation."

There might be some variations which might depcit something similar however," she replied to the young Slytherin, before glancing at Mr. Chosen with a bit of a grin. Representing sacrifice and looking at things from a different perspective." Something she wondered if the boy related to a tiny bit, when he wasn't trying to sleep through class.

Weelll....Legend honestly had no clue, why it would use regular animals in tarot cards. He didn't even understand the cards! "Maybe they were just trying to throw people off ma'am." Wait. The Hanged man was actually one of them? SCORE. Legend grinned, and sat up a bit straighter. Maybe he could learn to like this class?

Alright Celtic Cross? Because the people who created it were Irish! Or something. Legend raised his hand. "Maybe...the other spreads were complicated and this one was the simplest? Cause...you know...it's just a cross." That made sense right?

It is often used for funerary purposes and possessed a great deal of energy, plus magic. The Celtic Cross was and is used to express everyone's white pride," She answered.

Renée nodded as a few of the students responded related to the actualy Celtic cross, that she imagined coudl be seen anywhere in the general vicintiy of Hogwarts, or in Ireland as well. It wasn't quite what she'd been after with her question, but it had posed an interesting idea. "Yes, traditional Celtic crosses are used in those ways, but the spread of the same name is just symbolic. Not necessarily related to religion, or ideologies such as Nazism. Perhaps there is a bit of simplicity in the spread, however, like Miss Hollingberry mentioned, as it's one of the spreads that provides the most information," she said with a nod toward Mr. Owlwraith. "Inspiration could be involved as well, although I'd imagine you wouldn't want every reading you did to symbolize death," she concluded with a smile. Even as a metaphor, most people preferred not to consider death.

After addressing the answers about the cross, Renée turned to the rest of the students offering answers. It helped knowing people did the reading, even if their answers were all a bit different. Individuality was nice too. She nodded, before setting the fabric wrapped object down on her desk to walk a bit again. "The Celtic cross spread in fact is rather old, and because of that, powerful. Most spreads contain their own power, however, just like the cards themselves hold power. Information," she said, before turning fully back to the class. "And most likely that is because it uses more cards, so more details are provided, instead of needing the interpretation to be quite as thorough. Other spreads, like the three-card spread Miss Swynford mentioned, are just as useful, but require a bit more work to understand what they tell you.” And at that point she thought it would be good to go into the meanings, and the spread itself, but it seemed first she had some other answers to deal with.

Sending another glance to Simon as he’d tried his hardest yet again, Renée fought to not laugh again. She didn’t want to embarrass the Hufflepuff, even as she had the thought that it was possible he was doing this to get a laugh out of her, or the rest of the class. Either way, she managed it without a giggle, even though it was tough going. “That is entirely possible, given the prevalence of minor sports teams in existence,” she responded, a hint of amusement still in her voice. Especially if she considered old teams from back in the States, but she wanted to get back to his answer. “I’d hope for the other teams’ sakes they aren’t. That would make it a bit difficult. But let’s get back to Divination.” The mythical basketball team would likely be impossible to beat. But they needed to get back on topic.

First, it seemed there was going to need to be a bit more progress gained regarding whatever the deal was with Jake and Treyen. Renée turned to look at the older Hufflepuff as he denied the intention towards his housemate and smiled a little, before glancing at Treyen for a moment. “You may not have said it, but we both know you meant it that way. Whether toward him or not,” she said gently. She hadn’t actually known, as class was definitely not the time to be getting into that, but it wasn’t that hard to figure out. But she nodded as he went on to attempt an answer to the question at hand. “Certainly. The placement of each card has just as much meaning as the card itself, although that is true of any spread. Not specific to the Celtic cross spread, and you’ll find more cards are involved than just what you mentioned.” And at that, she returned to lean against her desk, near the package she’d retrieved from the shelf. Hopefully they could get back on track.

A wry smile crept onto Renée’s face as she noticed how Mr. Chosen had perked up, though. Odds were it was over being told he’d guessed correct, but his response had been fascinating as well. “Perhaps. Maybe you could look into that sometime,” she replied, reaching over and picking up the object before addressing his attempt at an answer regarding the spread. “Actually, you’d find that both correct and incorrect. Since the spread involves more cards than most, some people might find it more complex. But as was also mentioned, it provides a clearer answer to the question that is asked, since there are more details filled in.” Which seemed a good time to go into more detail herself, and she flicked her wand yet again toward the chalkboard as she thought about how to continue.

“Well, continuing with the Celtic cross spread, placement is important, as while each card obviously had internal symbolism with it, where it is in the spread affects the reading as well.” And a depiction of the layout appeared on the board, as well as a listing of what each card signified.

“Keep in mind that there are actually quite a few different adaptations, so the cards could switch around. In general, they’ll keep the meanings, though, the cards just move around a little. Not to mention you can find variations that add an eleventh card, or even more,” she added, fingering the fabric in her hand before placing the package down on the desk yet again and letting it open to reveal a deck. “In that way, spreads like the three-card spread can be seen as easier. Not only is the number of cards established, but their meanings are pretty static. Past, present, future.” Which was why when she let them all go try to do readings, in a bit, she’d let them choose what spread they wanted to use. She had one last question for them, though, and she looked up again while running a finger delicately acroos the top of the deck of cards now on her desk. “The Celtic cross spread has one card that isn’t included in most other spreads, but can sometimes be considered one of the more important ones in a reading. That would be card number one, or the significator. Does anyone want to give me an answer as to what significance that card holds?”

ooc: last question, then things'll change up a little bit. ; )

Preston dutifully and very carefully copied the chalkboard down into his spiral notebook. He wanted to make sure it was as near as an exact replica he could make of it so he could use it when he needed it, and he was positive he'd need it.

Erasing lines and words here and there when something didn't look quite right to his standards. Finally, done writing the last of what each card signified, Preston laid his pencil down on top of his notebook and listened carefully to Professor Bishop.

Jake. Was. Not. Amused.

He STARED up at Bishop.

REALLY? She was telling him what he'd said? Well... she was right but that was IRRELEVANT. :x3:

So now he was disillusioned and, more importantly, SO LOST. Jake didn't know the answers, so he just... sat there. Doodling.

Listening... learning...

Seething...

Simon couldn't believe that he had got another question wrong. "Professor I'm really sorry, I am trying my hardest." Simon sighed. "I ain't doing it on purpose, honestly I ain't." Simon hoped that the Professor would believe him, he had this feeling that she was thinking he was doing it on purpose.

Simon want to answer but at the same time he didn't he was sure he would get it wrong. "Professor I'm rubbish at Divinations." Simon tried to think of what the card ment. "Is it that it is the best, it's the most important one."

Kurumi flew to her notes and began copying down what Professor Bishop was saying along with the diagram on the board. The significator? Kurumi had thought that she had read that as having another meaning. "Professor," Kurumi asked with her hand raised. "I thought that the card in position number 1 represented the present. It shows the general tone of whatever the one seeking interpretation is asking about."

For the first time ever, Evelyn was lost.

So so lost.

And it had nothing to do with the fact that she was not paying attention!

...

Blinking, the Slytherin exhaled a long breath, trying to wrap her head around what they were talking about now. Significator...card...one...thing...question. Alright. What is the significance of the significator? Oh now that almost just lost her right there again. "It's significant because..." Losing her train of thought. Ugh. "...it...it's like the prologue to the whole story. I think."

Hmm, right?

Eh?

Eino raised his hand. "Professor, the significator indicates who are in the present right? That would, naturally, affect the outcome of our future." It made sense. The person you are will determine the choices you make, and those choices would lead to a certain future. "However, Divination is the study of the future, so a present substance might not always be taken into consideration. By removing the significator one is able to read the future as, well, fate. Something that just happens, that it is destined to be. By including the significator the future would be subjective, and possibly change."
