"Hi Nika, and no no-one's sitting here! You can sit here if you want!"
Yey! Someone to talk to!

Wow, a prefect and a Ravenclaw going for the sloppy casual look. Nice.

Oh. Someone was coming to sit next to him. Ahh. It was Marie. "Hey Marie." He smiled at her, as he pulled out some parchment out of his bag. Probably should make some notes if he wanted to actually get the subject. Nice look? Finn laughed, glancing down at his untucked shirt. "I do try my best." Finn grinned at her. He really didn't think it mattered that he looked that untidy. At least he actually had his tie on. Haha. But then something else occured to him. Was Marie good at Divination. "Are you any good at Divination?"

Lexi heard her name and looked up from her... nothing. She was doing nothing. Smiling at Evangeline she noddedher head. "Yeah, please do," she said with a giggle. Perhaps the girl could keep her from falling asleep if the class warranted a nap. Nap in class = no good.

Yes! She didn't have to sit alone!!!

Emily returned Nika's smile. She didn't like sitting alone either.
She got out her journal as Nika spoke, then frowned
"Well, if I'm being honest I don't like the sound of this subject. It's like you said, it's mostly guess work. But I thought I should at least try the subject before I judge it."
She rolled her eyes then looked around for a change of subject.
"Is this your first lesson? I don't think I've seen you in any others."

Alysiana wheeled into the class, hoping to make a good impression. And sat down at an empty desk ready for her first Divination class.

Nika silently agreed with what Emily was saying. No, actually I went to potions before this. Have you been to any other classes??

Simon walked into the class. As he was new, he didn't know many people, just the ones he met at Diagon Alley and at the feast. "Hello professor." the boy greeted with a smile. He then took a seat at the front of the class. He didn't like standing when everyone was sitting.

"Ancient Runes, charms and potions. My favourite by far was charms! My mam and sister were very good at that subject, and apparently I am to!" she smiled.
She coudn't help being secretly proud of herself for being like her mam and sister.

YAY DIVINATION!!!

Joshua Carter was quite cheerful as he climbed the stairs to the Divination classroom because this class was his favourite. Hehe. When he stepped inside the class, he happily waved at the professor ''Hello professor!'' Since divination class was his favourite class, divination professor was his favourite professor.

Right after spotting Evelyn, Destiny and Patroclus, he walked towards them and chose a seat near them. While he sat down he nodded at his friends and girlfriend then moved a little to make sure that no one was blocking his sight of the professor.

Sitting down Marie smiled back at Finn. "Well your best is working for you then." She said giving him a little wink. She took out her parchment and quill so she could be ready to take notes... lots of them. She had notes from previous years but would wait to see if she needed them before getting those out.

Huh? Was she good at this class? Crap, she was sorta hoping he was gonna be good and could give her help. Unless... maybe he was asking her to see if she did need his help before he offered it to her. Yeah that had to be it. He was a Ravenclaw and a prefect after all, he had to know what he was doing here right? "Um, I do okay, it's not my best subject though. You gonna help me if I get stuck on something?" She knew that if Jimmy was in class he would be able to help her, but he wasn't here yet. She glanced back at the door hoping to see him walk through it. Where was that boy?

Samia 01-12-2011 08:41 PM

Divination was just plain awesome. Lots of stuff to predict and be amaazed about. Perhaps he would get to know if he had any future as a Quidditch player. Eep.

Yes.

He must know what was that all about.

And secondly the professor of this lesson was just so pretty. Avoiding to look directly in her eyes he muttered a quick greeting "Hello Professor" before spotting a rather blond Legend and an awesome KT, Lando made his way to find a place near them. "Helloooo" he called out lightly from behind them. WHY were they not exchanging hellos?

Hmm. The woman, their new Divinations professor seemed pleasant. Very nice so far, thankfully. Katie chose to take that as a good sign and another good start to class.

Still resting her head on her arms, Katie glanced in the direction of the voice that spoke to her, sweeping the unruly strands of hair that had fallen into her face as she sat up a bit to look behind her. "Hey Lando," She murmured back, offering the boy a warm smile.

Aw okay. "Good day, Professor Bishop." Well, it didn't seem like she was upset, angry, or ready to hex her into next week. Huh. "Oh, I'm fine. Just..." What was her excuse again? "...a spider..." Did that sound convincing enough? Right there on the floor where that small black dot was. Maybe it was a piece of black lint actually? Or a thread?

Chuckling as she felt her face warm up, she smiled and sat back down before immersing herself in doodling random dragons and creatures in her notebook, completely missing the fact that the professor would have wanted to know her name. She had some roster sheet or something didn't she?

Class hadn't even started yet, much less the actual year, and she was already losing it.

Her lack of studying would have nothing to do with it, nope.

Finally reaching the classroom, she took a moment to catch her breath before walking inside. And..it was a classroom. A normal looking classroom. Shrugging her shoulders, she gave the Professor a salute before walking over to Evelyn..

WHO WAS GOING TO KILL A SPIDER!

That was wrong, wrong, unacceptable and just WRONG! Walking a little quicker over to her friend, she placed her bag on the desk next to her, not really thinking or caring if she was saving it for someone else, and bending down, Destiny picked up the thing that sorta resembled a spider leg.

Was it a piece of thread? Yes, but Destiny didn't know that.

"Evelyn! You ripped it's leg off!"

Frown.

"That's good to hear," Professor Bishop replied as it seemed the Slytherin at the back was fine. "Spiders are probably more afraid of you than you are of it, you know. But then, this is Divination, not CoMC," she added with a smile. She had her doubts it was a spider situation anyway, but she'd let her have her little excuse. The girl seemed to have gone back to whatever she was biding time until class with anyway, so the interruptions weren't an issue.

Until another Slytherin girl entered and went over to spider girl, and Renée gave her a smile in response to the salute. "Good morning," she replied, even though she hadn't been addressed. Before raising an eyebrow as an exclamation sounded from the back of the room. Well, she knew spider girl's name now at least, without checking rosters. The mythical spider was probably gone as well, hopefully. Luckily, she had more students to deal with, so worrying about invisible spiders (or invisible anyone) went to the back of her mind.

"Good morning," Renée replied to everyone who walked in and said the same to herself. Part of her wished she still had work to do, but now it was just waiting until she felt the class was full. Her fears that nobody would attend were gone now, though. There was almost more students there now than had been in her classes in America. She just hoped she'd have enough for the practical portion of the lesson.

Either way she hadn't really met any teachers.

She looked around the classroom for somewhere to sit, when she caught sight of a familiar face. "Hey Lexi," she smiled, walking over to the girl. "Think I could sit here?" She asked, motioning to the sit beside her.

As one of the newer arrivals decided to introduce themselves, Renée nodded slightly. "Good morning, Miss Benford," she replied. Keeping things short for now, but still friendly. And it seemed Miss Benford had found a seat, so that was taken care of. The latter part of the lesson seemed like it might go smoothly. Hopefully. People were pairing up at least.

"That's very nice to hear," Renée replied as Miss Salvatore responded to her earlier statement. "I hope I don't let you down then." That was the sentiment of the hour. With a quick glance at the view from the window just outside the classroom, Patroclus entered, a smile on his face, and hop in his step. "Good day Professor Bishop," Patroclus greeted the Professor, in a warm happy tone, "I hope you enjoy your first class with us." It was not just the students that had to enjoy the lesson, the professor should as well! It's only fair!

Heading through the desk, Patroclus spotted two of his favourites, Evelyn and Destiny. Dropping himself down in a desk, he grinned at them and said "Ladies" in the voice of a cool cat.

Lets Divine!

As yet another student entered, Renée sent him a smile from the front of the room. At least it seemed she had prefects in the room, if things got too crazy. She was still hoping to keep control however. "Good morning, Mr Hudson," she replied, doing the slightest bit of checking on the name. "I hope so as well, and same to yourself." Not to mention the steadily growing crowd in the room. The stronger hope was that something wasn't planned that she was unaware of, that this many people didn't think she'd go down in flames. She wasn't planning to, even if she had to be like her phoenix. They weren't going to scare her away.

She had a class she needed to start soon. "Good morning. "Here it is.. I'll... just sit now..." Damian turned to the professor's warm eyes, ashamed for entering the classroom in such a manner.

A bit of a guarded expression, trying not to look so concerned, crossed Renée's face as another girl almost made a disastrous entrance, but she sent her a smiel anyway. "Same to yourself," she replied. Wanting to ask, but not quite sure it was the time or place. She would have heard if there were any accidents on the lower floors before now, to explain the girl's appearance. At least she'd found a seat, so things could continue. She had a feeling it would be time to start the lesson soon anyway.

....

Eww. Partners? Seriously? Sheridan didn't do partners. She worked on her own or with Alex, but that was only when someone needed to learn a lesson. Still divination, she was bound to be good at that one, all it involved you doing was making up lucid stories and dreams, and if you asked anyone they would tell you the one thing Sheridan did well was embellish stories.

She sat down at an empty desk, sligning her bag on the other one, if someone walked over she had time to decide whether or not they could sit there. If they couldn't there was always the...

floor?

Renée sent yet another smile to the newest arrival, a blonde girl who looked the slightest bit disheveled. As if she'd been worried about being late, actually, which was obviously not the case even though she was semi-standing at the front of the room by now. "Good morning, Miss Smith," she replied, faint amused expression on her face as theblonde claimed two seats for her own. She was lucky there still were two, but that would change eventually.

A quiet laugh escaped her as Satine chose to respond to the warning about note-passing. More at the wording than the intent, but Renée nodded. "That's good to hear, but I'd still be careful." It was fine for now, but once things got moving, rules would need to be followed. A matter of distractions and all, and notes could be just that.

Maybe it was just more worry about times, but obviously that was unfounded. "Good morning, Miss Sopps. I'm quite well, thank you," she replied as the girl spoke from her seat, however. At least things were staying civil, along with needing to get moving.

But of course, it seemed like half of the school was here already. So maybe he.. maybe he was late? But.. it didn't look like they started.. so maybe he was okay afterall.

Steppin in a little farther, Jayce noticed the new professor. They had a whole lot of new professors this year. But of course, it was kinda cool.. He smiled brightly at the divination teacher, unsure of her name and spoke,

"HAAAIII Professor," He said somewhat hyperly, which kind of explained his sprinting down her hallway only moments prior. Yeah, he was hyper. Eirian had given him CHOCOLATE this morning. He was set for the day.

Wondering if she should just start everything now, Renée was distracted by the whirling dervish that sped into the room, before slowing to reveal it was yet another student. A very hyper student, at that. "Good morning," she replied, once she'd decided it was simple hyperactivity and not anything else. "Why don't you try and find a seat, and we'll get things going soon." If he could manage to sit still. As far as she could tell, that might be questionable, but at least it might also be entertaining.

Speak of the devil.. She was actually talking to her! Rae stared for a moment.... Contemplated a response then settled with just putting her forhead back on the desk in front of her. No.. No respose for you. And if this teacher really wanted to get on Rae's good side... She wouldn't be losing points for the 'no response' either.

Rae just waited for the lesson, so then her attention would be directed at everyone else but her.

And then Rae realized she'd been spoken to, and Renée simply gave her an innocent smile. Her point had been made, and she didn't particularly mind if the Slytherin sat through the entire lesson with her head down. She had so many others to deal with to woory about one student who amusingly disliked her for simply being there at the feast. Crushes on professors were quite entertaining to watch, really.

"Hello Professor, I don't mean to take your attention away from what you are working on, but since this is my first year I thought I should introduce myself. I am Nika Adler and I'm really looking forward to your class"

Nika looked around the room not sure where to sit. She tried to find a familar face that seemed to be sitting alone. At once her eyes fell on Emily and suddenly Nika's face lit up. Nika walked toward the back where Emily was sitting. "Hi Emily," Nika said with a smile. "Is anyone sitting with you? Nika was truely hoping that she would invite Nika to sit with her because if not Nika would feel somewhat embarressed.

Renée turned her attention to the other students again as more entered, and she smiled at the next to address her. "Good morning. It's no problem. As you can see, I'm not quite as busy anymore, Miss Adler, and I'm happy to hear you're looking forward to things." Little bit of a joke in that statement, given this was Divination. Before she could say much more, though, Miss Adler had made her way to a seat and she turned her attention to the class again. Maybe a few more minutes.

She then seen her other friends, Evelyn, Destiny and Patroclus. Yes, she would sit with them.

Walking over to them she noticed there was another new professor. "Hello Professor. Welcome to Hagwarts." Oh, there was Finn... and no one was sitting near him yet. Glancing at her friends then back to Finn she decided to sit with him. She was sure her friends wouldn't mind. "Hey Finn. Nice look you got going on there." She said noticing his untucked shirt. Wow, a prefect and a Ravenclaw going for the sloppy casual look. Nice.

Before she spoke, however, another student made their entrance, and Renée watched the newest Slytherin girl as she seemed to go through some decision-making before heading to a seat. She smiled as she was greeted, however. "Good morning, and thank you," she replied as the girl went over to the Ravenclaw prefect and sat down with a comment or two. Even though the welcome was a little unneeded, it was nice to get. She knew not everyone was ready to welcome her.

But at that, she decided it may as well be time to start class. As long as nobody interrupted, she'd be fine. "Well, I guess I'll just get started then," she said quietly to herself, before moving to stand in front of her desk. "Welcome, all of you. Obviously, as you all know, this is Divination, and I'm Professor Bishop," she said to the room as a whole, then. "While I'm sure you all know the basics, there's a chance some of you don't know all of them, so that's where we'll begin." Glancing back at the chalkborad, she watched as the words vanished, preparing for what would be next. "If anyone wants to offer anything to start, feel free. You can say what you might already know, anything like that. It's good to know, but I'd also like someone to tell me what Divination is." Start at the beginning, work from there. The teacher seemed nice, however. She smiled at the teacher, not yet knowing her name, but she was sure she'd find out soon enough. Now she just looked towards the front of the class, waiting for her to start.

Having walked into the classroom and sat down sometime earlier, Sierra Greingoth absentmindedly twirled a lock of her hair while she thought about Divination class. Easy? Hard? Who knew...

...but if she really was any good at telling the future, she'd already know, wouldn't she? Maybe once she had a few lessons under her belt, though, that might change. She glanced over at the professor uncertainly, suddenly wondering if she'd ever actually heard the woman's name before. If she had, she somehow didn't remember it. There were just too many new names and faces for her to have them all down pat right now.

So she simply gave the woman a small smile then continued to wait quietly for the lesson to begin.

"Good morning Selina! How excited are you about Divination?" She giggled as she played with her a hair a little bit.

Looking up from her book and the parchment that she was heading she saw the bright and bubbly Hufflepuff take a seat next to her. The small quant table fit three and now with the two of them sitting down they awaited the final bum to take the seat, Ms. Elektra Draven.

Getting a good look at Violet Selina saw the usual yellow bow adorned in her hair. Her uniform somewhat more classy and unique than the others in the classroom. "Hey Vi. Yeah I am, Adam and I were talking about dreams and Divination in the Common Room last night. I keep a dream diary so I guess you could say I'm interested in the topic. What about you?"

And secondly the professor of this lesson was just so pretty. "Helloooo" he called out lightly from behind them. WHY were they not exchanging hellos?

Woah. How did she know that he was tired? She was a mind reader or something. Or maybe she had the inner-eye??

Pssh. Never mind.

"Orlando." Legend muttered with a slight nod, as the younger boy sat down close. He didn't have to say much. Katie would greet him and talk to him and baby him. Yup.

He, on the other hand was still waiting on the moment to give Lando pushups.

"Hi," he said happily, taking a seat and pulling out his books. He noticed that Treyen hadn't unpacked any of his things and wrinkled his brows. "You ok?" he asked. Something seemed off about him. Or maybe Alex was just crazy and imagining things.

Eyes fixated on the board and the way 'Divination' was written, Treyen started to regret his decision of coming in.

"Alex, hey!" he said, with a small smile, and watched the oh-so-much-taller-than-him boy take a seat next to him. Treyen's smile turned into a smirk when he noticed Alex taking out his books. Yeah, he was NOT doing that yet. He was here...to observe. Yes.

"Me? Yeah, of course," he said, shrugging his shoulders. Why wouldn't he be okay, right? After how awful this year was turning out to be. "You?" the Lockhart boy was giving no indication at his slight dislike for the new Professor.

It wasn't like he had actually done something wrong, for as far he knew, the adult at Jake's party was the new Divination professor. But he just so wondered if he had made a bad impression to the new professor when he met her at the party. Guh, he was being silly. Definitely. 'Are you nervous?' or 'You're nervous' couldn't exactly mean he'd done or showed something wrong. Oh. Silly him.

It was after a moment when Cedric shrugged the 'silly' thought away (yes, he decided the thought itself was silly. Totally not him). And so he walked into the room, his hands on his pockets, and eyes glancing round the room casually. Then his gaze fell upon the woman. "Hello ma'am," he greeted, and then noticed Treyen... looking a bit gloomy unlike his usual self. He walked toward Trey, flopped down on the seat beside him, and offered, "Hey Trey. How's life treatin' you?" For it was treating him... a bit too wickedly.

Oh? His eyes were on the badge already and it hasn't even been two minutes since Cedric sat down on the other side. Well, this wasn't FAIR either! For all he knew Treyen could look like a first year sitting between this two GIANTS!

He frowned.

Then let it go. There were more important things to worry about, no?

How was life treating him? Hmmm...interesting. Awful. That was the answer. "Okay...I guess," he shrugged, and looked at the board again. His frowned deepened, "Yeah, everything's okay, how about you?" he truly didn't mind if he answered or not, he was now focused on NOT focusing.

Charley walked into the Divination classroom. Most of the other students had already nabbed their seats, and she was surprised to see that the room looked very....normal.
Thank goodness, she thought. A classroom that looks like the ones in school back home. Save for the charmed blackboard, that is, of course. Pretty cursive, too. It looks a lot like Mum's.
Charley chose a desk on the right side of the class, near the bookshelf, that didn't have a student sitting in the one adjacent to it. Professor Bishop had arranged the desks into pairs, so she wanted to reduce her risk of being around any gossip. Or giggling, for that matter.
"Hello, Professor Bishop," she greeted her teacher, sitting down and taking out her notebook, ink and quill, as well as a few jellybeans from the Bertie Bott's package she'd stashed in her bag, which she popped into her mouth one by one. She was still peeved that her Charms class had turned into an ogling session for most of the other girls. Apparently Professor Descoteaux was "sexy" and "dreamy".
It's not as if I was the only first-year either. How creepy is that? she thought, disappointed that there was no response from her brother.
Suffice to say, she was very relieved that she had another female Professor. And Divination sounded very interesting. It was one of the few things Henry had told her he was not good at. Lauren had sent a list in her first letter to Charley at school, of subjects that she was not good at-meaning she wasn't one of the top students in that class when she was at Hogwarts.
I will be, though. I'm off to a pretty successful start. I can definitely do this.

Hello Professor? MEEP! She knew that voice rather well. Which meant, both Gryffindors were in the class! Especially the one which she had been waiting for for like five minutes now.

Looking towards the desk in front of them, the Slytherin smiled before moving up one seat to sit next to Josh. Well, they were all pretty much seated together anyways, their little group that is, but now she was just sitting next to him. Him who...was paying rather good attention to the Professor. Huh. When did he become so studious?

Hmmm?

OMG! That's what her dad used to say to her. Something about spiders being more scared of them then they are of...them...

Or something.

Especially if they were only going over the basics.

But, what better way to make herself stay awake then to answer questions? "Divination is the..." What. "...attempt, I guess you can put it, to foresee into future events or gain answers from questions that you may need guidance on, using...various tools."

Tools being things like FIRE!

"Bishop. Like the chess piece," Jake nodded, and went ahead to take his seat.

MOOOOOOVING ON.

Once Bishop was done talking, Jake raised his hand. What he wanted to say was how TERRIBLE he was at this subject... but he settled with something else. Damian raised her hand as a habit and immediately dropped it with a loud smash against the table. Not bothered by pain or sound, she hurried to answer:
"Divination is magic which attempts to foresee future events. Many consider this branch of magic to be imprecise at best. There are several types of Divination. The most imprecise is type known as "fortunetelling," also reading tea leaves, palmistry, crystal balls, astrology, and more. The second kind of Divination is practiced by the centaurs. In their view, divination is far more useful for predicting large changes than day-to-day events. The third type of Divination is called Seeing. This is true Divination, although what the Seer reveals is usually in the form of a prophecy. True Seeing is very rare." A deep breath. Damian was gloating inside. "It's quite a grate subject to develop..."

Amira With a C 01-12-2011 10:45 PM

Parke raised his hand, pleased that he knew the answer to this question, at least. He had done a bit of general studying on the topic before class. "Divination, stemming from the latin 'divinare', is the art of gaining insight into a situation or problem of some kind, through use of a certain object, ritual, or combination of the two. It allows you information you would not ordinarily have access to."

Weasley174 01-12-2011 10:47 PM

Simon looked at the Professor and raised his hands. "Divination is something that helps you clear your mind and make you able to see the future, well sometimes you can." Simon smiled, he had no idea if this was right but he was hopefull it was he had been studying the subject over the summer.

The Gryffindor grinned goofily as The professor spoke to him. She was a PREEETTY new professor too. Straightening up a little taller, he adjusted his messanger bag, and spoke. "If you say so," he shrugged, bounding away from the teacher, and towards an empty seat.

As he sat, he placed the bag on the desk and openned it, searching for his book. Errrrrr... Looks like someone had snuck him a surprise this morning. Extra sweets for later. The boy smirked, leaving the various candies in the bag for the off chance that he'd lose his initial hyperness, and pulled out the book, placing it on his desk clumsily.

Jayce watched as the professor moved towards her desk and begun class. And now she was asking questions. Ermmm.. Divination.. He'd never exactly enjoyed the course and wasn't particularly good at it..

Right. Time to answer.

The boy raised his hand waving it back and forth in the air. He had no clue what he was going to say, but hopefully once he was called on it would come out somewhat intelligent.

As he was called on, he quickly put his hand down, and opened up his mouth. "Well, Divination is.. it's kind of like predicting stuff.. right? But it's more complicated than that. It can come from various things around you, yes? For example.. you can do a prediction based on tea.. orr.. the clouds in the sky. Right?"

Kinda? Maybe? Sorta? He shut up then, swaying slightly in his chair to the music that only he could hear in his head.

XxPandoraXx 01-12-2011 10:50 PM

Pandora raised her hand. "Divination is a way to gain insight to questions or situations by way of rituals. Some examples of Divination are Taromancy, tasseomancy, and cleromancy." She said. "It was and still is practiced among Shamans, Pagans, Wiccans, and in places like Africa where the people are still in touch with their ancestral roots."

Lezleighd 01-12-2011 10:50 PM

Satine shot her hand up in the air, "Professor, Divination is like making the unknown known..." then paused...that made sense to her but she decided to explain further, "It's the discovery of things hidden in the past, the present, or the future by the interpretation of signs and symbols and stuff."
she said with a little nod.

lemondrop13 01-12-2011 11:02 PM

Always the same start to every year in every subject - a definition of key terms or core tenets. Though some might find it redundant, Bennet actually enjoyed the consistency. Everyone starts on somewhat equal footing with the most basic of information.

Raising his hand to contribute to the conversation, Bennet added, "Foretelling the future using any one of a vast number of different methods and materials as decided by the divinor. These methods and materials are systematic means with which to organize what appear to be random components of existence."

Starbreeze 01-12-2011 11:03 PM

Eino listened to everyone else's responses, but they all sounded like parrots in a vast room, that is repeating each other and speaking over their echoes. He dipped his quill in the ink bottle and wrote down. Divination, the art of foretelling the future. One would suppose it would require painting or sculpturing the future, but it wasn't that sort of art, or at least he hoped not. "Professor," He began with his hand in the air "Divination is only presumption, correct?" He had heard that most Diviners and Soothsayers were frauds and that Divination was often inaccurate. "Also, I heard that Muggles, most notably the Greeks, practice Divination through what they consider to be 'divine beings,' such as the Greek gods and goddesses, that show them prophecies and the future, is this true? Is their form of soothsaying accurate?" This led him to a series of other questions, but someone else began speaking before he could continue, which was for the better, otherwise he would never shut up.

ooc: starting after Mia, (no editing in responses guys. I'll know). Stick with one answer per post, as well. Let's spread the points out. And I don't think I need to remind you that if you haven't "entered", just act like you've been there all along.

Lexi knew what SHE thought Divination was... probably not appropriate to say it was the most useless magical learning EVER. She might offend... Raising her hand she said, "Uuuh... Divination is magical readings of tea leaves... dream interpretations... stuff like that. Magic that tells the future or something about the inner eye..." SOunded about right to her.

Lexi looked over to Evangeline and smiled but also gave a little shrug of sorts. Who knew. She never grasped Divination... even when Kapoor taught it and he was her fave. Still spoke with him often. He and his wife. Hehe.

"Lemur boy. Looking quite...prefect-y today." she grinned, closing her notebook of doodles and leaning back in her seat as Patroclus sat down near them.

Well, at least one of the Gryffindors were here.

Smiling over to Josh, the Slytherin looked forward once it seemed the Professor was starting to talk to the whole class in general, already feeling as though she'd been sitting there for over an hour. Yes, this was going to be a long class.

Patroclus couldn't help but smile.

He had missed this, Evelyn and Destiny, best friends but always at odds with each other. "I think you mean, looking perfect today!" he smiled at Evelyn, as Josh sat just near them, "Hey Josh," he grinned. In a very expected move, Evelyn slid from her seat and moved to one next to her boyfriend, leaving Patroclus and Destiny at their table.

"See just look, she is so scared of my badge that she went running," he whispered, "Don't even need to tell her off about killing the spider!"

Not to mention the steadily growing crowd in the room. The stronger hope was that something wasn't planned that she was unaware of, that this many people didn't think she'd go down in flames. She wasn't planning to, even if she had to be like her phoenix. They weren't going to scare her away.

Still grinning proudly, Patroclus turned his head towards the Professor as she began the lesson. Listening to the others around him, Patroclus thought he would help with a definition of his own.

"Divinations is a noble art, that one uses to ascertain information, or educated guesses about certain elements of the past, the present and most often the future." He nodded, "There are a variety of tools that one can use in Divinations to discover this information, such as smoked, entrails, cards, palms and tea leaves."

Patroclus still remembered the lesson from the last two term with Professor Nolan, especially the cloud gazing one, which Patroclus still held the conviction that Evelyn had charmed the sky.

Waiting for answers to her question, Renée raised an eyebrow again as another student, a little Ravenclaw, chose to walk in late. Not only that, but she didn't really even seem to notice that she had, which made her sigh inwardly. Why did it have to be a Ravenclaw? "Good morning. It was nice of you to join us, but unfortunately you are late. One point from Ravenclaw," she replied, still inwardly flinching. Hopefully the girl would catch up with the lesson.

"You could put it that way, Evelyn," Renée agreed, sensing a preparation for boredom from the Slytherin. "It's not quite entirely correct, but one point anyway." It was the general forms of Divination she used, and what they'd discuss more in depth in class. But it wasn't exactly what Divination was.

"Well, like the name suggests, I guess Divination is... divining. That's usually what some kind of god-like dude does, and a kind of omniscient thing. So... it's... getting information I guess from natural occurances."

...

Maybe.

Renée nodded at the comment about her name from Jake, keeping the train of thought on present topics instead of going backward. It seemed he had the same idea, and she gave him a smile for his response. "You don't necessarily need to be omniscient, but yes. You can use natural occurrences for divination," she replied.

Eyes widened at the loud sound of a hand slamming back onto a desk, but Renée simply turned her attention to the disheveled Slytherin as the girl spoke. "True. And we'll discuss the various types in a moment," she replied with a brief nod. "One point." She went on to address the latter comment as well, though. "It is definitely a good subject to develop." It always was developing, too.

"Divination, stemming from the latin 'divinare', is the art of gaining insight into a situation or problem of some kind, through use of a certain object, ritual, or combination of the two. It allows you information you would not ordinarily have access to."

Renée smiled as she heard a bit more of a detailed response. Somebody had done the reading. "Yes," she said simply. "Thank you for that bit of etymological background, and divination certainly does allow information to be known outside of the normal routes. One point."

Renée let a little smile creep onto her face at the next answer she was given as well. Just at the tentativeness, really, not to mention she had a feeling he wasn't entirely aware of the misstep.

Renée tried not to grin as the hyper boy simply continued his animatedness, but the fact she was trying to keep class moving helped immensely. She'd watched as he'd taken his book out and everything, though. "True. Divination can be, as you say, 'kind of like predicting stuff.' Among other things." You could learn so much more than predictions, if you did things right. "One point." She just hoped he could concentrate longer.

she said with a little nod.

Renée grinned as Satine shot her hand up, then seemed to second guess herself a little. "Yes. One point," she replied, before continuing to the class as a whole. "Divination not only is used to 'tell the future.' It can be used to discover many other aspects of life, history, whatever you want to learn. If done correctly." And that was the important part. One had to do things correctly to truly divine anything.

Raising his hand to contribute to the conversation, Bennet added, "Foretelling the future using any one of a vast number of different methods and materials as decided by the divinor. These methods and materials are systematic means with which to organize what appear to be random components of existence."

Renée nodded as she got yet another contribution to the discussion. "Of course. Systems are integral to many forms of Divination," she replied. Unless you went into the more ephemeral aspects of Divination. Predictions, Seers, things like that. Those often used symbolism, but there was little that was systematic about them in the beginning.

Renée looked up as it seemed they had at least one sceptic in their midst, and she smiled as he posed his questions. "Not entirely, but take a point for showing the opposite side of the argument," she said. "That is definitely one view of Divination, however, and comes into being when people misuse it." And that was what everyone else had to fight against. The frauds who abused divination for monetary or entertainment purposes. "The Greeks looked to their gods for much more than just divinatory help, but yes. In its own way, I would say their practices were accurate. Have you ever heard any of the predictions received from the ancient Greek oracles?," she asked, before moving on. They could go back to that later.

Moving the discussion along, she looked out at the classroom as a whole yet again. "Now that we've gotten a basic idea of what Divination is, I'd like to see if anyone knows the answer to this. Ancient peoples generally separated Divination into at least two types. Each encompassing many forms within, but can anyone give me those classifications?" Or anything even close. She knew what she was after, but there was the possibility the texts gave slightly different information, not to mention she didn't know what all the students might have read beyond the textbook.

I mean she understood it and followed it and such but she had never really seen much truth in it, but it was a requirement so she headed to class.

When she entered she noticed that desks were paired up. As she walked in searching for a desk she introduced herself to the Professor, "Howzit, Professor. I'm Satine Farris, Sixth Year Ravvie. I hope you had a great break!"

She glanced around the classroom and saw an empty spot beside Dallin and paused for a moment debating if she should sit by him or not. She didn't want to seem needy or annoying so she made the decision to sit at the pair of desks across from him not at the desk paired directly with him. You never knew who might want to sit by her...right...

She sat down and pulled out her rainbow quill that made taking notes more entertaining and a purple notebook with a butterfly on the front of it and set them on her desk.

Satine glanced over at Dal with a smile and then opened her notebook and began writing on the first page. Then she tore the page out and folded it up and passed it to Dallin with a mischievous smile. As she handed it to him, she whispered, "for your eyes only..." with raised eyebrows trying to convince him that it was muy importante.

Perhaps later, although the smile she gave him as he spoke was just as curious. That smile could be a ruse, and she wasn't about to take it for granted as otherwise. "Good morning, Mr. McKinley," she replied instead, simply. Setting her pen down finally as she decided she wasn't going to get much more work done.

As the next girl entered, Renée was both surprised and not surprised by the brightness. Of the girl's hair, of her demeanor. Dallin gave Satine a smile as she sat down in front of him. He raised an eyebrow questioningly, but just as he read it, the professor saw it. He looked up at her innocently, wondering if her words were a warning to not pass notes. She didn't seem angry about it, but he decided it was better not to chance it, and he didn't pass a note back. He did smile slightly, though, at Satine's reply to the warning. Yeah, it was completely harmless.

At the question, he raised a hand. "Divination is trying to see the future, mostly, right? To know what's going to come. I know that there's a lot of different ways you can do so, like tea leaves and Astronomy and stuff." Not the best answer, but at least it was something.[/COLOR]

*AiryFairy* 01-12-2011 11:24 PM

Alice thought carefully before she answered and then raised her hand “Divination is…well it is basically telling or seeing into the future using a number of different methods. There are actually forms of Divination in the muggle world, they have monthly or daily horoscopes in their newspapers and things like fortune cookies in Chinese restaurants, Although not much of it actually works. But then people are sceptical of divination in our world."

Lissy Longbottom 01-12-2011 11:50 PM

Alex looked at Treyen and smiled. They'd have a chance to talk after the lesson. Instead he focused his attention on the text, trying to find an answer to the question the professor had asked. Divination used a lot of BIG words, and he didn't have the slightest clue what any of them meant.

He raised his hand and decided to just give it his best shot. "Erm, are they split into how you go about getting an interpretation? Like, some forms you throw things like bones and look at their pattern and stuff, and others you just stare at it until you see something. Like crystal balls," he explained.

That sounded really confusing to him and he had probably confused the professor too. He lowered his hand and blushed, waiting to see what her reply was.

lilithpotter 01-12-2011 11:50 PM

"Are you talking about divination thru use of the stars, professor?" she asked alittle confused by the question. The look on her face was clear that she hadn't full understand because th little part between her brows was crinkled.

Holmesian Feline 01-12-2011 11:55 PM

Ok so divination was the one class he hadn't done so well on the OWL he took. Simon decided to giev it another shot since he figured he might still enjoy the class. Listening as the class began and sitting quietly taking notes, the latest question struck something in his mind from reading and he raised a hand. "Are you talking about the split between natural and artificial divination?" he asked in supply lowering his hand.

Amira With a C 01-13-2011 12:00 AM

Parke thought for a moment about the professor's next question. Hadn't there been three types? Frowning, he tried to remember what exactly he'd read. Finally, he raised his hand, still slightly unsure.

"There's...well... Cleromancy, in which an object is cast, and the outcome is determined by the way the object falls." He paused. It made way more sense in his head. "Like tea leaf reading, I suppose. The other, augery, determines which possible outcome, when there are many, is most likely. Like determining a most likely path one will take with the use of card reading." Merlin, he hoped he was at least partially right.

Jackie sat and debated whether or not to raise her hand she decided against it and decided it would be a good time to get a piece of paper. She quickly rummaged in her bag and grabbed a nice long piece of parchmant and her best quill.

"One point."

Jake frowned slightly. He'd meant aspiring to be omniscient, but oh well.

Erm... and now he was lost. Divination was a lesson he could not fluke his way through.

"I have no idea, so I'm gonna say... stuff about the future or stuff about right NOW?"

Bad guess was bad.

WHOOT!

Tyrone put his hand in the air before answering. "The types of Divination. Well it could be Earthly and Heavenly, right? I mean, Earthly because it uses things that we can find on the Earth, being things like tea leaves, smoke form fires 'nd stuff. And Heavenly because we can use the stars and the alignment of the planets to foresee things too"

Lila raised her hand. "Some of the classifications are augury, omens, and sortilege," she answered.

Eino had heard of a very popular oracle but he didn't know too much about it. "I have heard of the Pee-Thee-Ah." With his arm raised, he pronounced it very carefully and very awkwardly, and his Finnish accent actually took effect when he did so, which was very rare. "Also known as the Oracle of Delphi," that second one was easier to pronounce, he thought, "which were prophecies." Divination didn't sound too bad after all, so long as they discussed such things as historical importances of Divination and not drink tea to read tea leaves he would enjoy the class. Two categories? Eino knew of one type of Divination but didn't know if it would answer the Professor's question. Raising his hand he said, "Is Cleromancy one of them, Professor?"

lemondrop13 01-13-2011 12:07 AM

He doubted that his answer would be correct, but as he couldn't think of any major subdivision of Divination, he suggested with a raised hand, "Perhaps celestial versus terrestrial? Heavenly bodies versus bones or sticks, etc." Bennet continued to contemplate the question, but was coming up short.

Simon looked at the Professor and put his hands up. "are the two types, truthful and the untruthful people." Simon wasn't sure about the idea but that what he would class them at because they are those who are true divination people and thoughs who aren't."

"Astrology and Cartomancy, ma'am?" Pandora asked, her hand raised again. She wasn't sure if she should give a description of each or not, mainly because she wasn't even sure if her answer was right.

Alice was now completely lost. Being one of the sceptics of this subject she hadn’t really done much reading on it…well she had tried last night but then she got into a conversation and then she had fallen asleep when reading her books. She hadn’t expected this kind of question at all. Well never mind, she wouldn’t be able to answer straight away in every class. Maybe it would be best just to sit back and listen to everyone else’s responses.

XxPandoraXx 01-13-2011 12:13 AM

Pandora raised her hand. "The two types of Divination are Natural Divination and Artifitial Divination." She went into more detail. "Natural Divination means that the Divination operates without an outside devices. It is usually called 'intuitive' or 'inspired'. It is also believed that the knowledge that the person has is passed through them by a God and is given to them through dreams. Artificial Divination is like what others mentioned before: tesseomancy and chiromancy. There is an outside device controling the Divination."

scarsandtetris 01-13-2011 12:22 AM

Waiting for answers to her question, Renée raised an eyebrow again as another student, a little Ravenclaw, chose to walk in late. Not only that, but she didn't really even seem to notice that she had, which made her sigh inwardly. Why did it have to be a Ravenclaw? "Good morning. It was nice of you to join us, but unfortunately you are late. One point from Ravenclaw," she replied, still inwardly flinching. Hopefully the girl would catch up with the lesson.

Again!? At least she hadn't asked her to explain. Enough people knew about her family issues. She really didn't need her brother trying to get revenge for ruining his chances with an attractive girl or something stupid like that. Nathaniel would no doubt get peeved about the fact that she told her Ancient Runes professor that he was essentially the reason she was late.
Maybe I am just really off schedule. But it is the first day, so maybe I just need to get used to where my classes are.

She quickly grabbed her textbook from her bag, but after hearing the question left it on her desk.
Nathaniel was studying this over break, wasn't he?
She decided to interject; she hated speaking in front of her peers, but she really needed to get back some house points.

"I think she's right: astrology and cartomancy. Divination using celestial forms, like the planets, and fortune-telling," she said as clearly as possible, hoping her memory was correct.

"There's...well... Cleromancy, in which an object is cast, and the outcome is determined by the way the object falls." He paused. It made way more sense in his head. "Like tea leaf reading, I suppose. The other, augery, determines which possible outcome, when there are many, is most likely. As she'd pretty much expected, Renée found that most people struggled a little with the question that had been posed. She smiled at those who had spoken up, however, since at least they tried to come up with something. "Those are forms of divination, and I'll give you a point for bringing them up, but you'll find they're not necessarily the classifications I'm looking for. Try for broader classifications." Or wait a bit and she'd answer them. It seemed others wanted to take a guess though, so she held back on answering her own question just yet.

Renée noticed the frown, but since the lesson had moved on, she chose not to ask about it. If Jake was having difficulties, he was always welcome to stop by her office outside of class. Or ask, but instead it seemed he just chose to keep going with answering the questions given and she gave him a smile. "Not quite, but that certainly is an interesting idea. Another point. Divination doesn't necessarily focus on now and what is to come, though," she replied. She appreciated attempts, at least. Even if they were a bit out of left field.

A thoughtful expression crossed Renée's face at the next couple answers she was given, though. Those were two classifications, but still not exactly the answer she'd been looking for. "Close, but not quite," she said. Still thinking about the answers. "I imagine you'd find both of those fit into one of the classifications I'm after, but take a point each anyway." For trying. Besides, it had been an intriguing answer.

Pythia would probably be the most famous of the ancient Greek oracles, and actually, that would be a good example for one of the classifications I'm looking for, so one point," she said with a nod. At least he seemed to be opening his mind a bit, but she shook her head slightly as he continued. "No it is not, as that is simply a form of Divination. But you're getting closer."

"Natural and artificial divination are the two basic classifications that have lasted since ancient times, and as was said, natural comes more from outside inspiration. Like the oracles Mr. Uronen was mentioning, prophecies, or Seers. I'd imagine there aren't too many people proficient in natural divination here, though, so let's focus on artificial divination for now. We've heard a few types of artificial divination already mentioned," she said, glancing at those who had suggested them in discussion. "But does anyone want to suggest any others?"

Selena smiled at Sammy who sat next to her and nodded back at the reply of the professor. Oooh, definitely nicer than Lafay. Yup, this was a nice teacher. She smiled at her, getting ready for whatever work she was supposed to do today, though she'd have to admit, the idea of work wasn't very appealing. But Divination was fun, because there was always a chance that you could be studying candy to determine your future or something of that sort.

She raised her hand for the next question and replied. "Well, another form of divination is apantomancy, having to do with animals," Selena offered.

Simon smiled softly back in return as his answer as well as another's had been the one the professor had been searching more all along. The added points were just a bonus to knowing he wasn't too bad in the subject. Listening to the next question, he raised his hand once more to provide an example.

"There is Oneiromancy or the divination through the study of dreams," he replied.

Simon thought long and hard before answering the next question. "How about people who can right things on a paper and then not remember anything about it afterward I don't know what it's called but is that a type of Divination?"

She found Jania and she sat down with her. She responded to what divination was "Divination, is a study in which you clear your mind and you discover another world in your dreams and make predictions based on what you know." she hopefully answered right, since she was a first year after all and wanted to take this class because she wanted to do something different.

Pandora raised her hand. "There is Lithomancy, which has to do with stones and gems. The traditional method uses thirteen stones in all. The first seven represent the ancient astrological signs: sun, moon, mars, mercury, saturn, jupiter, and uranus. Then the remaining six represent the home: love, luck, health, magic, and news."

He...HATED this.

Entirely.

But that didn't matter when he raised his hand, right? "I suppose 'Pyromancy' could be one of the artificial forms, no? The one that uses fire for interpretation," he said, with a nod, Fletcher came to mind when he said 'Pyromancy', he'd surely like that Divination method.

And then boy eyed the Gryffindor Captain and frowned slightly, before raising his hand again, "Wouldn't 'Oneiromancy' be between the natural forms, though? Since the dreams aren't particularly forced on us and all."

A thoughtful expression spread across Charisa's face. There were like, a gazillion types of divination, right? So a good number had popped into her head. She raised her hand. "Professor, there's numerology," she said. "The divination of numbers." Oh, Merlin. She hoped that was one of the artificial types.

Amira With a C 01-13-2011 01:10 AM

Parke listened to the other students give their answers. When the professor pointed out the correct response, he nodded to himself. That made more sense. He made sure to write it down.

Another question already. They didn't stay on one topic for too long, did they? He raised hand once again. At least this answer he was sure of. "Aeromancy is one. Not commonly practiced, it involves the interpretation of cloud shape, size, and color in particular, but the name can be applied to any kind of divination that makes use of things in the sky, and not covered under astrology."

The two types of divination didn't really seem all that hard to understand. Then again, Sierra had been fairly quiet for most of the class and had spend her time probably listening too much. If she wanted any credit for her work at all, though, she'd likely have to speak up and say something soon.

She absentmindedly tapped her foot lightly against the floor as she thought about all the various types of divination she'd heard of just from being part of a household where all its members were witches and wizards. Most of the obvious ones had already been named. Hmm... Raising her hand, she said, "What about Tiromancy?" That was divination using cheese. It sounded interesting enough. Kind of funny, too. "It's a type of divination using cheese, which...sounds really unusual."

Unless you went into the more ephemeral aspects of Divination. Predictions, Seers, things like that. Those often used symbolism, but there was little that was systematic about them in the beginning. "One point."

And another person who wasn't a fan. Renée gave her a little nod, and silently gave her a point, as the girl at least tried to avoid outward derision. "It can be. Even if you don't think there's much use for it," she replied with a smile. "More the inner self than the inner eye, however. The inner eye is simply a construct explaining how diviners understand what they see." Hopefully she could make even the tiniest impact on her beliefs by the end of term.

Raven amazed of the discussion, he almost didn't understand all along, the class is very new to him, but he listen carefully

It is also believed that the knowledge that the person has is passed through them by a God and is given to them through dreams. Artificial Divination is like what others mentioned before: tesseomancy and chiromancy. There is an outside device controling the Divination."

With a shudder at the disgustingness of the thought, Bennet offered, "Cartopedy - feet divination. Though why anyone would want to touch someone else's feet to divine the future is beyond me. With people's creepy toes, especially when the second one is longer than the first. Or when the big toe is huuuuuuuge and bulbous. And the toe nails. Ugh. I think I might throw up in my mouth at the thought," Bennet realized he was rambling and cut himself off abruptly. With a deer in the headlights look, he glanced around the room and then down at his desk, where he vowed he would keep his eyes for the rest of the lesson.

"Like... palm-reading and stuff?" Jake suggested, putting his hand in the air. He underSTOOD slightly, too. Which... was all good.

The young man studied his own palm for a while.

Pandora smiled and gave a slight laughed. "I get it from my mother's side of the family. Divination has interested me since I was young, so my Mother taught me some. I easily understood it." She smiled again. "It's like my brain is hard-wired for it."

He fought the need to chuckle. But the Lockhart boy did shake his head and leaned casually at his desk. Jake could at least know the actual name of it, right?

After all, they have studied it before. And it wasn't a hard one either! He could've said Palmistry instead of Cheiromancy and still get away with it.

Treyen was seriously considering just asking for a permission out of the class...and then his eyes wandered off to Ellie. He sighed. He wasn't leaving.

He saw that.

He SAW that.

And the quill Jake held was going straight at Treyen's head if he so much as said something about what ever he was shaking his head about.

And it WAS about Jake. He knew it.

Jake was putting sand in Treyen's bed later. Yup.

Ellie did not like this. She felt ill. Literally ill. She was considering visiting Moretti after class.

Her position had not changed. She was still shaking. Her limbs were still crossed over each other. Her eyes were unfocused, and so was her brain. She had no idea what was going on in class. All she could think about was how much she did NOT want to be here.

It all felt too foreign. Different teacher, different desk arrangement, different people. Well, she wasn't sure about that last one, but not the point.

And it was HOT. Was it always hot in this class? Or is it just under these circumstances. Probably the latter, considering she was shivering simultaneously. Huh.

She chewed her lip. More than anything at this moment, even more than leaving class, she wanted to STOP thinking about the way she felt things ought to be. Because that was why the tears were coming. And she did NOT want to cry in public. Yet, occasionally, a tear was dripping from her eye. But no one would notice, right? She had her head turned from the majority of the class, so all was good, hopefully.

Random_Me_Ly_ 01-13-2011 02:13 AM

Heather had no idea what was going on. Her strongsuite definitely wasn't divination but she paid attention anyway.

Emmaleigh nodded her head, took some notes on the two types of divination. It was all quite interesting. Hearing the request for a type of artificial divination, the girl raised her hand before saying, "Rune casting" She smiled thinking about the idea. it would be so cool to have a lesson on that topic since it combined her two favorite classes.

Text Cut: hmm

A thoughtful expression crossed Renée's face at the next couple answers she was given, though. Those were two classifications, but still not exactly the answer she'd been looking for. "Close, but not quite," she said. Still thinking about the answers. "I imagine you'd find both of those fit into one of the classifications I'm after, but take a point each anyway." For trying. Besides, it had been an intriguing answer.

Renée smiled again as the sceptic answered her earlier question abotu the oracles. It seemed he knew about them, even if he didn't believe in them. "Yes.

Renée fought back another grin at the creativity of the next answer, and looked over at the young boy who had given it. "I appreciate your creativity, but no. That would be more likely a way of classifying Diviners, don't you think? As opposed to Divination," she replied to him with a smile. At least her students were thinking. Not closing themselves off to possibilities. That was a good sign, but she was still afraid she would have to give them the answer she was looking for.

Text Cut: yay

A grin appeared on Renée's face at two of the answers she'd gotten, though. It seemed she wasn't going to have to provide all the answers just yet. "Thank you, Mr. Bennet, Miss Black. Two points for each of you," she said, turning to them, before going back to the class as a unit.

Isobel had been to Divination at Beaubaxtons, but it was never her strong suit. Arithmancy was more her speed. Wait-Isobel raised her hand. "Professor, isn't Arithmany a form of Divination?" Or didn't she mean that? Ah well, it couldn't hurt to ask.

squidnie 01-13-2011 03:07 AM

Dallin had stayed quiet for the last couple questions, not knowing much about the specifics in Divination. He really hadn't cared enough about it to learn much in his other classes. But the Divination at Hogwarts seemed alright, so he decided to pay a bit more attention, and try to contribute and maybe earn some house points.

He listened as students listed off forms of Divination, only recognizing a few of them. He frowned slightly as he tried to think of an original answer. All that was coming to him was muggle forms of fortune telling. Palm reading, Astrology, tarrot cards... sigh. He couldn't remember if they had already been said, but he didn't want to chance it. So he just looked at the professor, waiting for a question he knew, that wouldn't make him sound like an idiot if he tried to answer it.

Lezleighd 01-13-2011 03:21 AM

Satine listened to the next question and flipped through her notebook to her notes from last term from her study abroad time of six weeks at Beuxbaton. She laughed to herself when she found notes on her fave form of Divination. She shot her hand in the air knowing for sure that no one would know this form, "Professor, I have to admit that I find Stolismancy the most entertaining...It's were you draw omens from the way peeps dress..." she said click her blue heels together and smiling.

Rosa Chispa Princessa 01-13-2011 03:22 AM

Always a good place.
Chris timidly raised her hand. "Um..well I think divination is the art of foretelling the future or discovering unknown or hidden knowledge?" She really had no idea how to define something that seemed so broad... this class as a whole just made her nervous.

pundantic 01-13-2011 03:34 AM

Selina looked up from her table as she took down the notes on the separate types of divination. When Professor Bishop addressed the class on any other forms of divination Selina thought hard. Her Uncle Jensen was a healer at St. Mungo's who had done extensive research on the healing effects of tea leaves. She had remembered he had gone through a period of time studying tea leaves use in the magical word. He had mentioned something like tessomancy. It sounded like a type of divination so Selina raised her hand.

"Excuse me, ma'am. Isn't a type of divination tessomancy? My uncle studied tea leaves and had mentioned something about it having special properties to read for divination purposes, ma'am."

Lissy Longbottom 01-13-2011 03:41 AM

GOSH. There were SO MANY forms of Divination out there! This was so confusing! He scanned the list of Divination practices in his book and did a double take at some of them. Why on Earth would some people want to look at the body parts of dead animals to tell the future?!

Seers were WEIRD.

He raised his hand. "Nephomancy is the practice of Divination using clouds. I'm assuming you look for shapes in the clouds and interpret that stuff," he explained. That sounded kind of cool. Maybe he'd look for shapes the next time he went outside!

Treyen frowned, and Cedric pretty much expected it. Giving the boy a rather cool smile, he was about to tell him that he had been having good days, though somewhat boring, when the new Divination Professor started to talk and he knew that professors don't like it... when somebody's talking at the same time she/he is. So he just glued his eyes to the professor, listening to every bit she said as a non-slacker student would most likely do.

Cedric raised his hand in his customary fashion. He raised his hand with a wide knowing smile plastered on his face. "How about Gelocospy, professor?" he started, "Divination through laughter?" Cedric chuckled... bet she could tell something about him, solely using his laugh?

Kurumi smiled as she got her quill ready for any notes and began thinking about Professor Bishop's question. What was Divination? She hadn't ever really thought about it desite her taking the class last year. Guess she should start with the basics. "Divination, which comes from Latin divinare to foresee or to be inspired by a god is an attempt to gain insight into a question or situation. This may not always mean predicting the future, at least, I think Divination has many other uses. For example, last year we kept dream diaries and, while some of those dreams may be telling us about the future, many of my dreams were explaining my current state and providing me with a new road to take in order to change things should I choose to." Kurumi paused for a moment. "There are many different methods including Augury, which is Divination through birds' flight, or Pyromancy, Divination through fire, which my mother performed when she was a Shinto shrine maiden."

Kurumi found herself smiling. Her mother had made a connection to the wizarding world that she had never noticed. It gave her some hope that perhaps her mother could accept Kurumi as a witch.

She couldn't help but laugh, "I have no idea what got into my wand." She checked the time as to make sure she wasn't gonna interrupt class with her pocket burping all period. She listened to what Chris had advised, "That's a good idea, lets see..." She pulled out her oak wand from beneath her robs and pointed it towards her pocket, without thinking she blurted out the first charm that came to mind, "Engrogio," and she flicked her wand and little sparks came out. Witsy's pocket calmed down a little with a few bubbles escaping her view. In her attempt to keep the bubbles away from disrupting the class, she tried ignoring some of them, even though some of them were hard to miss.

Oh no what was her question, she thought. Something about artificial divinations... um what about dream warriors, she thought and raised her hand to speak.

Eino listened attentively as the Professor elaborated on his very brief answer in regards to oracles, the Greeks, and Pythia. He was actually making sense in divination? And understanding? AND LIKING IT?! Absurd! Eino hated divination! Well, most of his hate was a product of his ignorance and now that he understood it, he liked it. He began to write down more and more notes, detailed, specifics, trying to record every word the Professor said. HE raised once again, this time not timidly or hesitantly but very enthusiastically, his hand shot in the air, in a very "Me, me, me! Pick me!" way. And finally it was his turn to speak, "Professor, there are far too many forms of Divination that I have heard of. One of them I have tried practicing was Austromancy, the study of the winds, but to no avail." Eino failed miserably, and left him to wonder how was he supposed to study something he couldn't see. It probably required an additional skill, he thought.

She really wanted to earn her house some points. They were already in last place. And she wasn't going to stand for it this year!! She just wasn't

Ronnie lowered her hand and place them folded on her desk...waiting to see what the Professor thought of her answer.

Luin sat in the class looking down at her textbook frowning slightly. Although she loved learning, Divination was not her normal avenue of looking at things. She liked much more structured, formalized things. Although that last question was interesting. She thought of everything that she had memorized that was in the book, and some stuff she had heard classmates and other friends mention before...hmmm Artificial divination? She raised her hand slowly, "Ummm, would Cartomancy be an example perhaps? Reading cards?"

Divination that employs the scattering of pebbles, grains of sand, or seeds on the earth and then the interpretation of their shape and position and Geomancy also applied to the Chinese practice of Feng-shui" she said. Her mother had thought her about it last summer and it was really difficult method.

"I wonder where Elektra is.."

Selina looked up from the continual notes she was taking as the Professor spoke. It seemed like Violet had a delayed reaction to her original comment and had finally responded after class had started. She did not want to be rude so she grabbed her phoenix feather quill and wrote on the corner of a piece of parchment

Class started, zoning out Violet? Just kidding. I'll talk to you after class and as for Elektra... I'm not sure.
She then pushed the parchment over to her friend and shot her a look that said We'll talk later. Promise. At that she went back to her notes and Divination.

Violet then covered her mouth after she had read the little note Selina wrote her. She looked at Selina and nodded her head. Violet then took out her swan feather quill and wrote on the parchment,

Quote:

Oops! I guess I zoned out! Not to worry, nothing will distract me now!
Violet then took out her book and immediately began to write down all of the notes Professor Bishop had mentioned, that she missed, and was completely focusing on Divination now. It didn't take her long to write down all of the notes, in her Glittery ink, and it also didn't take her long for her to understand what Professor Bishop was talking about.

"There is Oneiromancy or the divination through the study of dreams," he replied.

Seers were WEIRD.

He began to write down more and more notes, detailed, specifics, trying to record every word the Professor said. HE raised once again, this time not timidly or hesitantly but very enthusiastically, his hand shot in the air, in a very "Me, me, me! Pick me!" way. And finally it was his turn to speak, "Professor, there are far too many forms of Divination that I have heard of. One of them I have tried practicing was Austromancy, the study of the winds, but to no avail." Eino failed miserably, and left him to wonder how was he supposed to study something he couldn't see. It probably required an additional skill, he thought.

As people started offering ideas as to various forms of Divination, Renée started thinking that people were getting more interested in the topic. Or they were just interested in gaining points, but as long as they were participating, she didn't really mind their reasoning. Participation always made class more fun. "You all seem to have done a bit of research," she said idly, noting those who were going to be awarded points at the same time as flicking her wand at the chalkboard once again to start listing the ideas as they were mentioned. It saved her from having to go through everything on her own, although she knew this was still going to be only a partial list.

"You'll notice a few of the forms that were mentioned aren't up here as of yet, but there's a reason," she added then, with a brief glance at Mr Lockhart as he seemed to get into a bit of an issue with Jake. She'd keep her eye on those two, along with the spot by the wall where she still knew she was being watched. It made things interesting, really. "And I'd imagine Professor Truebridge could shed a bit more light on the subject of Runic divination, so we'll let that one stay to the side for now." She could answer questions as well, but the lesson needed to keep moving.

"How about people who can right things on a paper and then not remember anything about it afterward I don't know what it's called but is that a type of Divination?"

As the little Hufflepuff whose earlier answer had amused her so spoke again, Renée grinned at him. "I believe you're talking about a phenomena known as 'automatic writing', 'psychography', or more commonly called, 'spirit writing'," she replied. "While that could very well be used in some situations as a divinatory practice, it's more commonly used in parapsychology. The study of spirits. Not quite the same, but it was a good guess." And an amusing one, at that. She hadn't expected there to be a spirtualist leaning to anyone at Hogwarts, even with the ghosts that floated around.

As she finished addressing the Hufflepuff, she turned to those who had mentioned numerology. "You three are correct. Numerology is indeed a form of Divination, and Arithmancy can be closely connected to Divination because of that. But as I mentioned regarding runes, I'd imagine Professor Hadley could explain arithmancy to you in more detail." And considering that was her fellow professor's subject, she did explain it quite regularly. "I'll add it to our list, though." There was no reason not to, when they were just giving an overview of divinatory forms.

Completing their divination list, as established by the students, Renée turned back to the students who'd spoke about tarot cards with another smile. "It seems you might be a bit hopeful about that subject," she said to the two who had mentioned them by name, before turning back to the class as a whole. "Cartomancy, or its similar cousin Taromancy, is quite the delicate study. As was mentioned, it can most commonly be considered reading cards, Taromancy being more specific to the Tarot while basic cartomancy can use any form of cards. Actually, most common is a basic deck of Muggle playing cards. And there's another offshoot that simply uses what are known as oracle decks, which is a bit more, well specific than either divination with playing cards or Tarot cards," she said, moving slightly toward the bookshelf as she spoke. If anyone was curious, she could explain their uses as well, but at a later time.

"For now, let's stick with the basics, though," she continued. "Maybe with the Tarot." And her discussion was turning a bit more casual, it seemed. "Does anyone want to offer a fact or two about the Tarot? Anything about the specific cards in the deck, or whatever else you can think of." Then maybe they could look into the correlation between that deck and the others. It would depend on what she got right now.

ooc: As usual, try to stick with only one fact, etc. per post. Let others get a word in. :) Try not to get too into chats as well and things will continue later. With more fun.

Helena raised her hand and hesitated for a moment. "We can use cards to gain insight into the current and possible future situations of... what we want to know," she said slowly. "Am I right?" she added, looking at the professor.

OOOH! Tarot cards! Kurumi had had fun with making her own deck last term for homework and was looking forward to studying them again.

"One of the more well known decks is The Major Arcana, or greater secrets," Kurumi offered with her hand raised.

Starbreeze 01-13-2011 09:15 AM

Taromancy. Eino added to his notes including the brief introduction and description the professor had given. Being well acquainted with different periods of European history, such as the Middle Ages, apparently came in handy for more than just History of Magic. He could recall that these were popular during the time and quite often used, perhaps of the most popular used forms of Divination, after Cyclomancy maybe. "Professor," He began with his hand raised, "the deck is divided into two parts, I believe. The Major and Minor Arcana. The Major includes cards like the fool, the lovers, the sun, and so on. I think there are twenty or maybe twenty two total. There are more Minor Arcana cards, something around fifties, I believe, and those are separated into subcategories, too." So he didn't know that many details, but hopefully this would suffice.
